Mog mayor again survives bomb attack
(SomaliNet) The mayor of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia Mohamed Omar Habeb ‘Mohamed Dhere’ has escaped from bomb attack onSunday afternoon, witnesses said – it is the second time that the city’s mayor survived an attempt on his life. A remote controlled roadside bomb exploded as the convoy of the mayor was passing on the road between Afgoyie and Mogadishu.

The mayor’s convoy came from Baidoa city where Mohamed Dhere met with the president Abdulahi Yusuf over the consultation on who will be the new premier from Mudulod sub-clan of Hawiye clan. There is no immediate casualty on the soldiers that were keeping guard the mayor.

In May, the mayor escaped unhurt from bomb attack which occurred near his car in north of Mogadishu where the security forces killed a suspected man. The attack took place as the mayor's convoy was passing around Sisi Street in north of Mogadishu when a man on the top of a tree near the street threw a hand grenade which exploded far away from Mohamed Dheere's convoy.

Ethiopian forces take over Qanyare's residence
(SomaliNet) Hundreds of Ethiopian troops with tanks and battle wagons have occupied the residence of former warlord Mohamed Qanyare but now in the federal parliament in Daynile neighborhood, south of the Somalia capital Mogadishu mid last night, sources say on Sunday.

Witnesses told Somalinet that they found tanks and truck full of troops rolled into the compound last night. “They have made military base in Qanyare’s residence. The soldiers are moving every where and forced the people to move from there. I don’t know why they have settled here,” said Ahmed Mumin, a local resident.

The government did not comment so far the Ethiopian occupation on the house of the Mohamed Qanyare. Some reports say the military move by the Ethiopian aimed to prevent the growing insurgents. The Ethiopian army supporting the transitional federal government doubled its military movements against the Islamic militants.

Hawiye spokesman handed to Ethiopia
(SomaliNet) The traditional council of Hawiye clan in Somalia on Saturday issued a press release stating that the detained spokesman for the council Ahmed Dirie had been handed over to the Ethiopian military officials who then took him to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

The council condemned the action of extraditing the spokesman to the Ethiopian government as fuelling the problem in the war-torn country of Somalia.

In the statement, the council also said the arrest of the Hawiye spokesperson was not to tell the facts on ground. The Hawiye traditional council called for the transitional federal government to release Ahmed Dirie who recently had been captured from his house in Mogadishu by the government troops.

2 more Huji men confess to their role
Two more members of the outlawed Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) outfit yesterday confessed to having taken part in the grisly grenade attacks on an Awami League rally that killed 24 people on August 21, 2004. Meantime, another Huji activist, Abu Taher, was placed on a two-day fresh remand for interrogation in the case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Shahin Uddin recorded the confessional statements of Abul Kalam Azad and Jahangir Alam Bulbul, the Huji bigots, after investigation officer Fazlul Kabir, also an assistant superintendent of police at Criminal Investigation Department, produced them before the court following a 10-day remand. Details of their confessions, however, could not be known.

The same police official produced Abu Taher before another court on completion of a three-day remand and appealed for another 10-day extension of it, securing a two-day remand.

Earlier Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, his brother Mohibullah alias Mojibur Rahman and their accomplices stated to the court that they orchestrated the attacks to kill Awami League President Sheikh Hasina only. The ghastly attacks also injured at least 300 people. Mufti Hannan was arrested at his rented house in the city's Madhya Badda neighbourhood on October 1, 2005.

Pilot, Crew, TSA: Four Passengers Targeted Bathroom, Tampered with Mirror
This occurred a couple of days ago on the 13th Nov.2007. I can't recall seeing it mentioned anywhere in the media. Hat Tip to LGF for catching and reporting this important story.

This TSA Suspicious Incident #177, Unclassified but For Official Use Only (U//FOUO), "has many of the elements of pre-operational terrorist planning" according to TSA Office of Intelligence. It was leaked to me earlier today in my ongoing efforts to compile terrorist dry runs and probes on airplanes.

A FFDO (Federal Flight Deck Officer — i.e. armed pilot) flying in non-mission status on October 24, 2007, on a flight from Washington D.C. to Milwaukee, identified himself to flight crew in advance of take-off. When flight crew witnessed suspicious behavior by four passengers, they reported the information to the FFDO. The following unfolded:

(U//FOUO) Suspicious Activity Onboard Flight to Milwaukee

(U//FOUO) On 24 October 2007, crewmembers aboard a Reagan-Washington National to Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport flight reported to a Federal Flight Deck Officer (FFDO) flying in non-mission status that they noticed suspicious behavior by four passengers.

One of the subjects entered and exited the rear aircraft lavatory three times and failed to comply with crewmembers' verbal instructions. The FFDO seated himself near this subject to observe his behavior. Shortly afterward, two more of the subjects moved into the aisles and entered both lavatories. After one of the subjects vacated the rear left lavatory, the FFDO searched it, noting that the mirror above the sink was not properly latched.

He exited the lavatory and a fourth subject was waiting second in line with a passenger in front of him. The FFDO offered the fourth subject access to the right lavatory, but the subject declined, claiming the right lavatory was dirty. The FFDO noted the right lavatory was clean, and the subject reluctantly entered the right lavatory and remained there for an extended period of time. (TSA/SD-10-3849-07)

(U//FOUO) TSA Office of Intelligence Comment: Although there is no information that the aircraft was being specifically targeted for a future terrorist attack, the actions of the four passengers are highly suspicious. FFDO confirmation of possible tampering of the lavatory mirror in one of the lavatories could be indicative of an attempt to locate concealment areas for smuggling criminal contraband or terrorist materials. In this case, it appears the left lavatory was the sole area of interest for the passengers. One subject's excuse that the right lavatory was dirty when it was confirmed to be clean shows the four passengers had a specific, operational objective. Although unconfirmed at this time, this incident has many of the elements of pre-operational terrorist planning.

Source: TSA Suspicious Incidents Report #177

Before August 2006, the TSA refused to admit publicly that terrorists took dry runs and probes on U.S. aircraft (after the London Planes Plot, the White House stated, "we know they do dry runs" and TSA quietly agreed). Unless there have been 177 such incidents in the past fifteen months, one wonders when TSA Suspicious Incident Reports #1-#176 occurred — and what information they contain?

#1  These four "passengers" had better be under 24/7/365 surveillance or ARREST. Sounds like an attempt to conceal and later couple up the ingredients for a "binary" type of ordnance or toxin. Damn all of these terrorist shits straight to HELL.

#3  I'd like to think that the old "box cutter" ruse isn't of much use anymore. Anyone who tries that route shouldbe able to—at best—inflict some sort of substantial wound upon one single hostage before getting their terrorist ass tromped into a fine creamy DEAD lather.

#4  I goofed on the date as to when this took place. The story was reported on Nov. 11th 2007. , but actually took place on Oct 24th. 2007. I was tired when I posted this story and did not catch my mistake until afterwards. It's too bad it took a month to make it more public.

#5  There have been several cases like this. I suspect they are trying to discredit security legislation. Actually, doing so would be criminal "mischief." I would arrest them, and try to make a case. I don't like being nervous at 25,000 feet.

#6  There are all sorts of things that can be done in such cases. It is part of counterintelligence operations. After a discreet report is made by the agent, by the time the plane lands, there should be intelligence personnel ready to do all sorts of things, from planting listening devices and GPS trackers on their luggage, persons and vehicles, etc.

Then for at least a week, they can't do anything without being under intense surveillance. If they meet anywhere, the meeting is recorded, and if it looks like they are about to go operational, they are all scooped up and disappear.

Posted by: Anonymoose || 11/19/2007 10:24 Comments || Top||

#7  ...and if it looks like they are about to go operational, they are all scooped up and disappear.

I'd prefer they were scooped up and disappeared when the plane lands. They can be reappeared later if it turns out they were just stupid, and not actually doing a dry run.

Parachinar clash toll reaches 86
Fighting between two rival sects - Sunnis and Shias - continued despite a curfew in Parachinar as army helicopters targeted buildings early on Sunday morning, putting the death toll at 86 with 150 injured, according to security officials and state media.

Three security personnel were killed and at least nine wounded as a military convoy was attacked near Balezkhel, local journalist Sarfaraz Ahmad told Daily Times by phone. Ahmad said one person was killed and another two suffered injuries as gunship helicopters pounded Noor Market in Parachinar Bazaar. Two shops, one owned by a PTV reporter, were also burnt in the shelling, he added. According to residents, security personnel have taken positions in Parachinar Bazaar and are targeting buildings and hideouts from where firing emanates.

Heavy militant casualties in Swat
Around 120 rebels have been killed in the last few days as artillery and gunship helicopters continued pounding the bases of militants loyal to rebel Swat cleric Maulana Fazlullah, the military said. Military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told AFP on Sunday that militant casualties were heavy, adding that five soldiers have been killed in the clashes.

Meanwhile, security officials said five militants were killed and 13 wounded in shelling of a rebel position in the Alipuri area. Troops have also picked up five suspected militants who are being interrogated, they added. Shelling also killed four civilians, while injuring dozens more and destroying several houses. Meanwhile, a peace jirga began talks on resolving the Swat crisis peacefully.

#2  It doesn't look to me like they are actually going toe to toe with the islamists. The pattern has been to drop some arty or plaster the place with fire from a helicopter but they aren't, as far as I can tell, following that up with sending troops in there to actually clear out any remaining enemy. So they seem to be doing the "kicking ass" part but not the "taking names" part.

Iraq
(Suspected) Senior Special Groups Leader Napped in Adhamiyah
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces captured a suspected senior Special Groups leader and detained another suspected criminal during operations late Sunday near Baghdad, in the Adhamiyah area.

The targeted individual was reportedly responsible for smuggling and storing weapons used in attacks against Coalition forces, and supported Special Groups criminal elements through funding and training. The suspected criminal was also reportedly an associate of several other senior-level Special Groups members from Diyala to Baghdad who were involved in attacks on Coalition forces.

“We will continue to pursue criminal elements who fail to honor Muqtada al-Sadr’s pledge for peace and we commend those who honor it,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “The groundswell of citizens who have courageously decided to oppose these terrorist elements are vital for improved security in Iraq.”

Coalition Forces Find Execution Site & More in Diyala Operation
Coalition forces find execution site, large cache; eight killed, 13 detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces killed eight terrorists, detained 13 suspects and found an alleged execution site, torture room and 16 weapons caches between Nov. 6 and 10 during a multi-day operation in the Diyala River Valley.

Nov. 7, Coalition forces observed several armed men maneuvering away from their location. Perceiving hostile intent, the ground force called for supporting aircraft to engage the armed men, killing five terrorists. The ground force discovered a small cache of AK-47s, a pistol, grenade and ammunition at the suspects location. Later that day in two separate areas, Coalition forces were engaged by armed men. Responding in self-defense, the ground force engaged the armed men, killing three terrorists. Coalition forces also detained 13 suspects during the four-day operation.

During operations Nov. 9, Coalition forces discovered what appeared to be an execution site. As they cleared the area they found the remains of approximately five individuals, as well as several 9mm casings believed to be used in the executions.

Over the course of the multi-day operation, Coalition forces located and destroyed 16 weapons caches to include: 13 complete anti-aircraft weapons, mounts, rounds and equipment; a World War II-era Russian T34 Cannon; 24 TOW missiles; 14 Saggar missiles; anti-personnel mines; 40 NBC masks; several machine guns and mounts; three jugs of homemade explosives; 10 anti-personnel mines; 35,200 feet of detention cord; one 25-pound bag of ammonium nitrate; several dozen mortars, tubs, fins, fuses and rounds; rifles; grenades and rocket propelled-grenades; ammunition; improvised explosive device-making materials; and two military-style vests. Two of the anti-aircraft weapons systems were found welded to the bed of a truck.

The ground force also discovered several buildings used for terrorist operations to include an alleged torture facility complete with chains, shackles, heavy-duty locks similar to those found in detention cell bunkers, windows cemented closed, terrorist propaganda materials, and kerosene heaters. Coalition forces found another building they believed to be an al-Qaeda in Iraq safe house containing additional terrorist propaganda and an alleged terrorist medical clinic with supplies, weapons and a hidden compartment in the floor.

Nearby, they discovered what appeared to be a building used to create false IDs, complete with numerous ID-making materials and a small media cache. Reports indicate several of the rooms, including the torture room were recently inhabited. Coalition forces also found an improvised explosive device making facility inside one of the buildings, with numerous cylinders, tanks, tubes and car parts believed to be used in the production of IEDs. The ground force called for supporting aircraft to conduct an air strike to safely destroy the building to prevent further use by terrorists.

“Al-Qaeda in Iraq members are ruthless terrorists who brutalize, torture, and murder innocent Iraqis in their campaign of senseless terror,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesperson. “Iraqi and Coalition forces will continue to capture or kill these brutal terrorists who seek to deny Iraqis a future of their choice.”

Iron Hammer successful in pursuit of al-Qaeda in Iraq
Iraqi Security Forces and Multi-National Division - North Soldiers have made significant progress against al-Qaeda in four provinces in northern Iraq after two weeks of Operation Iron Hammer.

The operation to disrupt al-Qaeda involves three U.S. brigade combat teams and four Iraqi Army divisions. During the operation, Coalition Forces and ISF have undermined al-Qaeda operations and discovered more than 50 caches across the Multi-National Division-North area of operations. The caches have contained more than 500 mortar and artillery rounds, three tons of homemade explosives, countless IED-making materials, hundreds of anti-tank and personnel mines and more than 100 machine guns. Beyond the weapons found, CF and ISF discovered various documents and related information material.

CF and ISF have also detained hundreds of suspected al-Qaeda members. ISF are reporting Iraqi citizens feel more confident and secure. "Every day the streets of Mosul are becoming more vibrant with shop keepers, as we provide increased security for the Iraqi people," said Brig. Gen. Moutaa Habeeb Jassim Jewab, commander of 2nd Iraqi Army Division, whose division was among those involved in the operation.

#1  It is important to remember that right now, the Iraqi army is the second most combat experienced ground military on the planet. And if the government of Iraq diverted its oil revenues to buying advanced weaponry for even a few months, if they got into a fight, Iraq would probably clean Iran's clock.

I think this is one of the reasons we are very hesitant in equipping them with a combat air force.
Posted by: Anonymoose || 11/19/2007 11:49 Comments || Top||

#2  It takes more than planes and pilots to make a [modern] combat air force. It takes modern infrastructure, logistics, CCCI, training, maintenance, weapons and ordinance technology, security, safety, fuel management, etc. Then you need defensive systems that are married up to your combat and air defense posture. I am not sure we can invest in that at the same time we are trying to bring their ground forces up to par. That will come but with smaller support systems (helicopters, tactical ground support, transport and air defense) and I doubt we will ever give them long-range bomb and missle launch platforms.

#5  "It takes a willingness to bomb other shiites, and when push comes to shove I don't think they're going to do that."

American Lutherans had no problem bombing the living pee out of German Lutherans in 1945. Why do you assume that just because two people are the same religion that they won't shoot each other?

Shiites shoot shiites every day in Southern Iraq.

Bombs kill 17 people in Iraq
At least 17 people were killed by explosions in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities on Sunday, Iraqi police and officials said, Reuters reported.

Nine people were killed and at least 20 others were also wounded in one of the worst attacks in the Iraqi capital in several weeks, which police said targeted Iraqi Finance Ministry adviser Salman al-Mugotar. A Finance Ministry source said Mugotar was unhurt in the blast in al-Hurriya Square in Baghdad’s Karrada district, but at least two wounded were reported to be his security guards.

Roadside bombs wounded two people in the Ameen district of southeastern Baghdad, and wounded another two in the Kesra neighbourhood of northern Baghdad.

Rockets or mortar rounds also landed in the Rustumiya neighbourhood of southeastern Baghdad, police said, but there were no details about casualties from that attack.

Three US soldiers were killed on Sunday in a suicide attack in Iraq’s restive Diyala province, the US military said in a statement. The attack happened in Baquba, it said. It was not immediately clear if it was the same attack that Iraqi police reported in Baquba on Sunday, in which they said a roadside bomb targeting a US foot patrol killed at least three children, two of them siblings, and wounded seven people.

Explosives hidden in a parked car went off at around 11am near an Iraqi police patrol in Mosul, killing three civilian bystanders and wounding at least 16 people, according to police Brig Muhammad al-Wagga. Five of those wounded were policemen, he said, AP reported. The blast caused damage to retail shops in the Dawasa neighbourhood, and about 15 cars were burned, al-Wagga said.

Farther south in Tikrit, a bomb exploded inside a police station, killing one policeman and wounding two others, according to police and doctors at a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile in the Iraqi capital, a roadside bomb exploded near a gas station as people were lining up for fuel at the start of the workweek. Three civilians were wounded, police said.

#1  At least yesterday's WaPo gave the good news (violence down) with the bad. I expect now we'll see a flurry of 'analysis' predicting a return to mass violence after a short 'lull' unrelated to the surge.

#2  Three US soldiers were killed on Sunday in a suicide attack ... happened in Baquba, it said. It was not immediately clear if it was the same attack that Iraqi police reported in Baquba on Sunday, in which they said a roadside bomb targeting a US foot patrol killed at least three children, two of them siblings, and wounded seven people.

Seems the PakiWaki Times left out a crucial detail. I wonder why?

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel agrees to return 20,000 Palestinian refugees
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert agreed in a closed meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to allow 20,000 Palestinian refugees to return back into Israel in exchange for ending Palestinian intifada, a report said yesterday. The Palestinian independent news agency Ma’an cited Israeli sources as saying that the implementation of this offer will be part of a two-state solution and will remain at abeyance until the Palestinian Authority becomes more powerful. The report did not say what was the criterion used to arrive at the 20,000 figure or whether the remainder of the Palestinians and their descendants displaced by the creation of the state of Israel would be monetarily compensated.

#1  Error! Error! Error! The paleostinians will demand that the 20k be allowed into Israel before they will end the intifada. Then some other group will start its own intifada, and demand 100k be allowed back before ending it. At which point, some other group will start their intifada and demand 500K be allowed back in. Lather, rinse, repeat until Israel is destroyed.

#2  I hope such agreements must be ratified by the Knesset -- or can be countermanded by the Knesset. How soon until Prime Minister Olmert is convicted of his various crimes and removed from office?

Standoff continues in Ein Beit El-Ma refugee camp; PFLP vows violence if PA siezes fighters
Ma'an – Palestinian security forces are locked in a standoff with armed Palestinian resistance fighters in Ein Beit El-Ma refugee camp near the West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday.

The military wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, announced Sunday that it would react "fiercely" if Palestinian security forces arrest any of its activists ahead of a peace conference in the United States this month. Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party began a siege in the camp in an attempt to detain four PFLP fighters and one Fatah member accused of illegally firing their weapons.

Palestinian officials said that consultations are ongoing among Palestinian, American, and Israeli authorities in order to decide the fate of the PFLP fighters engaged in a standoff with PA forces in Ein Beit El-Ma camp. Abbas, like President Yasser Arafat before him, has come under intense Israeli and American pressure to show that he can establish security in the Palestinian territories and dismantle armed resistance groups in advance of a new round of negotiations aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state. The Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, along with other armed groups, have rejected calls by the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority to disband before Israel relinquishes control of occupied Palestinian lands.

The US-backed peace conference is scheduled to begin in the city of Annapolis during the last week of November. The PFLP, a marxist, pan-Arabist revolutionary group was, until the rise of Hamas, the second-largest Palestinian faction after Fatah. The group holds three seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council.

PA security forces lay seige to refugee camp near Nablus

Ma'an – Palestinian security forces allied with the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority (PA) have begun a siege to Ein Beit El-Ma refugee camp near the West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday morning. Nablus Governor Jamal Al-Muhaissen ordered the troops into the camp to arrest Palestinian fighters who are charged with illegally firing their guns into the air two days ago.

Uniformed PA troops were seen closing off the entrance to the camp and taking up positions on the roofs of prominent buildings inside the camp. Eyewitnesses said "dozens" of security officers have been deployed inside the camp. A high-ranking Palestinian security source told Ma'an that the security services are not besieging the whole refugee camp, but they are rather going after a group of "law breakers" and will continue to besiege their houses until they turn themselves over.

Wanted for 'firing into the air'
The military wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, accused the security forces of hunting four of their activists, and one member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of the ruling Fatah party. The five men are charged with firing into the air during a ceremony in remembrance of the PFLP's "martyrs," those who have been killed by the occupying Israeli forces.

A PFLP spokesperson said that Palestinian security agencies had not issued an order not to fire into the air during celebrations or funerals. The PFLP furthermore accused the PA security forces of seeking to arrest activists who are wanted by the Israeli intelligence services.

Nablus Governor Al-Muhaissen denied claims that the Palestinian security forces would not arrest Palestinian fighters for firing at Israeli forces in self defense. The Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades spokesperson vowed that the fighters would neither lay down their weapons nor turn themselves over.

'Law and order'
The PFLP fighters say that in fighting against invading Israeli forces, they are not responsible for the ordinary crime and internecine fighting that has plagued Nablus in the past two years. The Nablus governor is currently implementing a US-backed multimilion dollar security plan aimed at restoring order to the city.

Nablus and especially its refugee camps have been a major center of resistance activity during the second Palestinian intifada, beginning in September 2000. The Fatah-contolled PA is under pressure from the US and Israel to supress armed groups like the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades in the West Bank in advance of a major Middle East conference.
