Heavy fighting rocks Somali capital, no casualties reported
Mortar blasts and machine-gun fire rocked the Somali capital on Saturday as Ethiopia-backed Somali troops fought with rebels, shattering a brief lull after months of heavy clashes. Shells crashed into southern and northern Mogadishu, including residential areas. It was not immediately clear whether anyone had been killed.

#3  Casualties are generally only reported when US forces are involved. Death and destruction, bombed out schools and mosques, dead terrorists freedom fighters, wimin, severly burned children..... all reportable only if US forces are within the area of operation or the range of blame.

Hunting for weapons underway in Mogadishu, govt. to lose a key town
(SomaliNet) The Ethiopian forces backing the Somalia’s interim government troops on Saturday morning carried out search operations for weapons and other explosives in Suuqa-Xoolaha village in Huriwa district, one of the areas actively operated by the Islamic fighters.

According to the local residents, the troops armed with battle wagons began door-to-door search operations in the area and faced no resistance so far. This came following days of ambush attacks by the insurgents on the government and Ethiopian forces positions. All the business shops were closed and people began to hide when the allied forces spread into the village in fear of fresh clashes.

“I suddenly closed down my shop and manage a place where I can feel safe because it is more likely to happen fighting when ever troops start search for weapons,” said Ahmed Kheyr, a local businessman.

The government and the Ethiopian soldiers were in position of vigilance during the search for weapons and suspects but found nothing so far as sources reports. Also search operations are under way on the main Industrial Road in Mogadishu where the soldiers are looking for mines and continue to check people and vehicles.

Meanwhile, the government officials in Dusa-Mareb, the provincial capital of Galgadud region in central Somalia were reported to have fled the city after received information saying that supporters of the Islamic Courts Union were preparing to attack the city. The governor and the police commander of Galgadud region Abdukadir Elmi Salad (Suufi) and Omar Hassan (Omar Yare) left Dusa-Mareb for unknown destination after they were informed by the city’s local elders they might face harassments from the insurgent groups those are reportedly to be heading to the area.

Somalia Islamic movement appoints new leadership
(SomaliNet) Somalia's Young Islamic Movement commonly known as 'Al-Shabab' said in a statement that they had appointed Sheikh Mukhtar Abdirahman Abu-Zubeyr as the new leader, an Arab newspaper reported on Saturday.

The London based Sharq Al-Aswsat newspaper said it received the statement from Al-Shabab saying the Islamic Movement had changed its former leader Sheik Mukhtar Robow Abu-Mansor with Abu-Zubeyr.

The new leader of Al-Shabab is said to have had training in Afghanistan during the Taliban regime and then came back to Somalia where he had founded the radical movement to face against the enemy of Islamic religion.
The radical movement in Somalia did not give details about the new change of their leadership. Al-Shabab, which is now waging insurgency attacks aimed to regain control in Somalia, said it will launch full scale war against the government and its Ethiopian ally. Former spokesperson of the Young Islamic Movement Abu-Mansor who is in Somalia' upper regions (Bay and Bakol) declined to comment on the new change.

The new leader of Al-Shabab is said to have had training in Afghanistan during the Taliban regime and then came back to Somalia where he had founded the radical movement to face against the enemy of Islamic religion.

Al-Shabab which was the military brigades of the ousted Islamic Courts Union is now actively involved in the ongoing hit and run attacks in Mogadishu which left hundreds dead, thousands more wounded and caused that 600,000 (half of the city's people) flee their houses.

Egyptian border guard killed in confrontation with smugglers
Ma'an – An Egyptian border guard was shot to death by smugglers near the Egypt-Israeli border on Friday night, news agencies reported. Reports conflicted as to whether the guard, twenty-one-year-old Mohammed Abdel-Ghaffar, was killed by drug traffickers or by smugglers helping African migrants enter Israel.

By one account, Abdel-Ghaffar was killed in a firefight with the traffickers after he confronted them. Three people have been killed by police in separate incidents earlier this year while trying to cross the border into Israel.

(KUNA) -- Belgian authorities released Saturday 14 alleged terror suspects who were arrested in a raid early Friday, local media reported. According to Belgian authorities, they were allegedly planning to use force to free Tunisian Nizar Trabelsi, who is currently serving a ten-year-prison sentence for planning an attack on a military base that houses American soldiers in Belgium. Police and security services were placed on a heightened state of alert to thwart any terror attacks in Brussels.

Pakistan hunts for bombing clues
Pakistani authorities have arrested a man over a suicide attack at a mosque on Friday that killed at least 50 people. Police on Saturday picked up the suspect in Charsadda, the same district where a suicide bomber detonated around 10kg of explosives amid a packed 1,000-strong congregation celebrating the festival of Eid. "We're looking for another man who could be a second accomplice," a security official said.

Reports said four people, including three Afghan nationals, were arrested late on Friday in a town four kilometres from the site of the attack. But it was unclear if the detentions at a religious school in the North West Front province were related to the blast.

Friday's bombing, apparently targeting Aftab Khan Sherpao, the former interior minister, was the second such attack on him in eight months. Sharif Virk, the provincial police chief, said that so far forensic evidence at the site of the blast was insufficient to give up any strong leads. "No head has been found from the scene," he said, referring to the fact that the heads of suicide bombers are often blown off by the force of the explosions and later found intact. "We have found four legs which we have sent for DNA test, but it could be little help unless we know the family."

Virk said the attack could be linked to armed groups in the adjacent Mohmand tribal region. The attack sparked anger and fears of further attacks should Pakistani forces crackdown on tribal fighters.

Fawad Khan, relative of a blast victim, said: "Why did these people, the government, spoil the situation in Swat, Bajaur and the Red Mosque? Now that they have done so, naturally even those people the militants are going to retaliate."

Kamal Hyder, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Pakistan, said: "It was widely expected that there would be attacks against Aftab Khan Sherpao ... he had been warned there would be revenge attacks." Besides being blamed for a security crackdown on armed tribal groups, many hold Sherpao personally responsible for the assault on a hardline mosque in Islamabad in July.

Iraq Qaeda group confirms top figure killed
DUBAI (Reuters) - An al Qaeda-linked group in Iraq has confirmed the death of Abu Maysara, a top operative who the U.S. military said was killed in a clash last month, according to a recording posted on the Web on Saturday.

Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State in Iraq, hailed Maysara as "a martyr who was a scholar and a mujahid (holy war fighter)", on the audio tape posted on Islamist Web sites.
And now he's dead. Excellent.
The U.S. military said earlier in December that Maysara, a Syrian, was among nine senior al Qaeda members killed in November. It described him as an adviser to Baghdadi, also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri, and his slain predecessor Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Baghdadi called on insurgents to keep fighting during the current Eid al-Adha feast, when Muslims sacrifice animals. "May God accept your sacrifice, and may they be the apostates of the Awakening Councils, who are servants of the Crusaders," Baghdadi said, referring to U.S.-backed neighborhood patrols who fight insurgents.
You guys are picking fights with everyone. And losing. Think about it ...
The tape's authenticity could not be verified but was posted on a main Islamist Web site often used by insurgent groups and the speaker sounded like earlier recordings of Baghdadi.
"Sounds like Omar, all right, Omar with a rag over his face, speaking softly into a microphone lest he be overheard, but yup, that's him ..."

#4  n Web postings, the Islamic State of Iraq has identified its leader as Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, with al-Masri as minister of war. There are no known photos of al-Baghdadi. Bergner said al-Mashhadani had told interrogators that al-Baghdadi is a "fictional role" created by al-Masri and that an actor is used for audio recordings of speeches posted on the Web. "In his words, the Islamic State of Iraq is a front organization that masks the foreign influence and leadership within al-Qaida in Iraq in an attempt to put an Iraqi face on the leadership of al-Qaida in Iraq," Bergner said.

Iraqi group leader killed at mosque in Baghdad
(KUNA) -- An Iraqi group leader was killed on Saturday while leaving a mosque in western Baghdad, an Iraqi security official said. An unidentified gunman shot dead a leader of the Al-Sahwa (Awakening) Councils while he was leaving a mosque at Al-Jameaa Neighborhood in western Baghdad, the source, on anonymity, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

Al-Sahwa Councils are US-supported Iraqi groups set up to fight Al-Qaeda militants in Iraq. The perpetrators fled the site after they had assassinated the Al-Sawha leader, only identified as Colonel Rabeaa. Al-Sahwa Councils were set up by the Americans as an example of how Sunni Arab Iraqis have united to combat Sunni Islamist Al-Qaeda group.

Early December, the Iraqi government unfolded a plan to integrate Al-Sahwa Councils into Iraqi army and police forces pursuant to a program set by commanders of the Operation Imposing Law. A total of USD 123 million have been allocated for the implementation of the plan, including pays and wages for members of those councils. The group has actually managed to expel Al-Qaeda from Anbar, al-Ameriya and al-Adhamiya.

Turkish planes bomb Kurds in northern Iraq
Turkish warplanes bombed Kurdish guerrilla targets in northern Iraq on Saturday in a new cross-border offensive, the General Staff said.

The Turkish military said the offensive against outlawed separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) guerrillas inside Turkey and across the border in northern Iraq would continue. "Turkish Air Force warplanes struck important targets of the PKK/KONGRA-GEL terror group in northern Iraq ... between the hours of 14:25-15:00 (1225-1300 GMT)," the General Staff statement, posted on its website, said. "The PKK will understand through experience that northern Iraq is not a safe place and they will understand once again that they have no chance against the Turkish military," it said.

Turkey says it has the right to use force to combat separatist rebels who shelter in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq and mount attacks in which they have killed dozens of Turkish troops in recent months. But the United States and the European Union fear a further escalation in tension could destabilise the region.

#2  It takes willful blindness on the part not to see what the Turks have in mind. All people who are in positions of responsibility who are watching the Turks mass on the border with 100,000 troops and stick their heads in the sand and say, ooohh, but they are just going after the PKK, will have their heads handed to them on a public platter when the obvious and inevitable happens and they it becomes painfully obvious that they were too stupid or weak to have forseen it.

US-Iraqi forces storm Iraqi party in Baghdad
(KUNA) -- The Iraqi Islamic Party, led by Iraqi Vice-President Tareq al-Hashimi, said here Saturday US-Iraqi forces launched a crackdown on its headquarters in Baghdad on Friday evening. Some 20 firearms were seized by the joint forces during the crackdown on the party head office, the party said in a release handed out here.

Helped by several Iraqi army officers, 30 servicemen of the Multi-National Forces in Iraq stormed the party building, tampered with its contents, smashed the doors of its rooms and seized 20 kalashnikovs, according to the release. The Iraqi Islamic Party blamed the Iraqi government for the damage that affected it, calling upon it to put an end to what it billed as "illegal practices". The party also admonished that civil institutions would be violated by anybody unless it played its due role in the protection of such bodies.

The party bolted from the incumbent Iraqi government, led by Nouri al-Maliki, but its leader Tarek al-Hashimi still holds the veep post. It is a key component of the Iraqi Accord Front, which has 44 out of a total of 275 parliamentary seats, in addition to General Council for the People of Iraq led by Adnan al-Dulaimi and the Iraqi National Dialogue Council led by Khalaf al-Ulayyan.

Hamas detains spies suspected of assisting Israel
A military wing of Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Sunday announced it had arrested several spies involved in helping Israel assassinating leaders of Palestinian factions.

Abu Obaida, spokesman for Ezz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, said that the recent interrogations on some collaborators led to the discovery of some spies who were suspected of being involved in the assassination of a number of resistance leaders, including the late Hamas leader Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi who was killed in 2004. While denying the spies were affiliated with his movement, the spokesman rejected to make the names of the spies public for security reasons.

#4  “…east of Al-Burej refugee camp…”

Refugees from where?…going where? In Gaza? Is it their contention that they are all part of a dislocated population from the “occupied territories”? Or is it really that the term “refugee camp” has more of victim quality then say…"Shanty Town”?

#5  DepotGuy - the "leaders" of a dozen Arab nations decreed that none of the "palestinians" that left Israel during the War of Independence in 1948 would ever be resettled anywhere but "Palestine". It's a deliberate tactic to keep the "refugee" situation in the minds of all Western nations, and to get as much graft as possible from guilt. Why do "palestinians" have to be in refugee camps in the West Bank and Gaza, other than to be a political tool? Just another great thought from the Arab world. May they all choke on sand and die.
