Explosion kills NATO soldier in Afghanistan
KABUL (Rooters) - An explosion killed a soldier from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in southern Afghanistan and wounded five others, the force said on Monday.

More than 760 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since U.S.-led and Afghan forces toppled the Taliban in 2001. Last year was the most violent yet as the conservative Islamist movement's insurgency became more widespread.
"Quagmire!"

ISAF does not disclose the nationality of casualties until the country's defence ministry makes an announcement, but most of its soldiers in the south of Afghanistan are from Britain, the United States, Canada and the Netherlands.

Taliban rebels are active throughout the rural areas of southern Afghanistan while ISAF and Afghan troops hold the cities and towns.

The United States is sending 3,200 Marines to southern Afghanistan after commanders complained they often do not have the manpower to hold ground taken from the insurgents and Afghan security forces are not yet strong enough to do so for them.

Taliban bomb kills five civilians in Afghanistan
A Taliban roadside bomb killed five Afghan civilians and wounded two others in the south of Afghanistan, a provincial official said on Sunday. The bomb hit a van in the Panjwai district, west of the main southern city of Kandahar, on Saturday. "The bomb was planted by the Taliban to attack foreign or Afghan forces' convoys in the Panjwai district but it killed poor civilians," said a district police official, Ghulam Mohammad.

Insurgent leader among four held in Afghanistan
(KUNA) -- The US-led coalition and Afghan forces claimed detaining four Taliban militants and an insurgent leader during an operation in southern Afghanistan.

A statement from US' Bagram base here on Saturday said that operation was conducted in Qalat, capital of the country's Zabul province on Friday. Without revealing his name, the military statement said one of the detainees has been identified as commander of the militants in Zabul province.

Separately, the Taliban militants claimed they had downed a coalition forces drone in central Afghanistan, however, the troops did not comment. The pilotless aircrafts having a length of some one and a half metre are used for spying missions. Earlier, a similar plane had come down in the southeastern province of Khost. Taliban had claimed responsibility for its shooting down but the foreign troops had said it had dropped due to technical reasons. Both Taliban militants and the Afghan government usually made tall claims of casualties and losses against their opponents while hide their own.

Mortars fired as new Somali PM arrives in Mogadishu
Gunmen fired mortars at the Somali president's house on Sunday, hours after the country's new prime minister arrived in Mogadishu for the first time since he was sworn in last November, a presidential aide said. "At least five mortar rounds have been fired at the president's house, where the prime minister is now staying, but they missed," the aide told Reuters on condition of anonymity. He did not know of any casualties.

The attack also coincided with the arrival of 440 soldiers from Burundi, only the second nation after Uganda to contribute to an African Union peacekeeping force trying to bring order to the chaotic Horn of Africa nation.

Somalia's parliament picked Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein in November to replace his unpopular predecessor Ali Mohamed Gedi, who quit last year over a feud with President Abdullahi Yusuf. "We will be engaged in reconciliation ... We will adopt a national system and try to secure Mogadishu by talking to the rebels," Hussein told journalists at the airport.

Seen as a neutral figure in an often fractious political scene, Hussein's challenge is to help bring unity to a country in which fighting has displaced a million people. Last week, at least 13 people were killed and 75 wounded in heavy fighting in the Somali capital. The final contingent of Burundian peacekeepers, which an AU military source said numbered 440 soldiers, boosts an existing 1,800-strong African Union force.

Kenyan Killings 'Planned' - Breaking Story

#1  The 1998 Kenyan embassy bombings by AQ, the church burnings, the armed dreadlocked ethnic gangs spreading throughout Africa and the Caribbean, and Osama's son surfacing with dreadlocks have never seemed coincidental to me. What's surprising is the 'planned killings' report on CNN and the BBC.

Arabia
Yemen detains Qaeda suspects after tourist attack
Yemen detained dozens of suspected al Qaeda supporters on Sunday, following the killing of two Belgian tourists and their Yemeni drivers in the east of the impoverished country, an official said.

Friday's attack came less than a week after al Qaeda's wing in Yemen vowed to carry out unspecified operations to win the release of jailed Islamic militants. Yemeni officials have not ruled out al Qaeda involvement in the shooting and are searching for the attackers though no one has claimed responsibility for the shooting near Shibam, famous for its old towers, in the Hadramout region. The arrests were made in Hadramout and the nearby Maarib and Shebwa areas.

The bodies of the two Belgian women were sent home late on Saturday for burial, the official said.

In July, a suicide bombing killed seven Spanish tourists and wounded six at the Queen of Sheba Temple.

Yemen, which joined the U.S.-led war on terrorism after al Qaeda's September 11, 2001 attacks on U.S. cities, has often been the site of militant attacks and kidnappings by disgruntled tribesmen. The ancestral home of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, Yemen is viewed in the West as a haven for Islamic militants. In an Internet posting last week, al Qaeda's wing in Yemen vowed to free its prisoners from the country's jails and retaliate for the killings of militants by the government. Officials said last year that July's attack had been preceded by an al Qaeda demand for the release of jailed comrades.

#2  I don't think that we need any more proof that provoked muslims will detroy property and kill people.

I don't know why the Hague should be able to censor expression. I don't have a problem with local elected government preventing the screening of the film based on the capabilities of their fire departments.

#3  I hope that right wing organization has the chutzpah to follow up their little PR stunt, after the riots, with a big recruitment campaign. Blanketing the country with leaflets to "join us, and we'll kick the buggers out", would probably go very well after lots of scenes of rioting and threats.

#7  For better or worse, I am convinced that we are in a death struggle of biblical proportions. We are in a full blown struggle for survival of our culture, our values and our future. The muslims have sworn to convert the world or kill everyone in the process.
I believe that the world leader have to come to the realization that we cannot negotiate, we cannot reason with or pacify these people.
We have to resign ourselves to a long war and what might appear to be a cruel one. We have to be willing to fight for our future and the survival of our civilization or face an apparent oblivion under the Shiria.
I look at Afghanistan under the Taliban and ask any rational person, do you want your sons and daughters to live like that?
It is now at the point of kill or be killed. Annihilate or be annihilated.
I apologize to the reasonable and rational moslims for this but your silence and your willingness to tolerate extremism and virulent hate amoung your fellow believers has brought us to this point. Much as Chamberlain allowed Hitler to florish, the moderate moslims have allowed the fanatics to take over the direction of their religion.
We are beyond the point of no return. It is now to the point of kill or be killed.

Iraq
Suicide bomber, 13, carried chocolate
A 13-year old holding a box of chocolates and wearing a vest packed with explosives blew himself up among a group of tribal leaders, becoming one of the youngest suicide bombers since the US-led invasion, Iraqi police said.

Hospital officials said six people were killed and 10 wounded in the blast on Sunday in the Western city of Falluja.

Police said he was the son of one of the five most-wanted leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

A tribal chief, Hadi Hussein al-Isawi, was among those killed in the attack on a meeting of leaders of the Anbar Awakening Council, a US-supported group that has turned against al-Qaeda in Iraq. Five of the wounded were reported to be in a critical condition.

The attack was the second deadly bombing in as many days in Anbar, where violence has increased in recent months after local tribes joined forces with the US military to push Sunni Islamist al-Qaeda out of the vast region. Sunni Arab tribes rebelled against al-Qaeda because of its indiscriminate killing of civilians and harsh interpretation of Islam.

The US military has warned that al-Qaeda will try to make a comeback in Anbar, where it once held swathes of territory until many of its gunmen were driven out in the past year.

■ US war planes pounded suspected al-Qaeda havens on the southern edge of Baghdad on Sunday night, hitting more than 30 targets in a 35-bomb attack, the military said yesterday. It is the third such operation in the area this month. The US has not released casualty figures, but a US military spokesman said that 1023 suspected extremists had been arrested and 121 killed.

Suspected Shiite militia leader titzup
BAGHDAD: U.S. and Iraqi commandos killed a suspected Shiite militia leader Monday during a raid in western Baghdad, the military said. But relatives said the man was an innocent truck driver who was killed while trying to shield his wife from the troops.
His truck transported bombs, Shiite Militia and Sunni hostages.
Hundreds of men chanted "there is no God but Allah" and carried a huge Iraqi flag as they followed the coffin of Jawad Abdul-Kadim during a funeral service in the Amil neighborhood. Protesters said he was not affiliated with any militant groups.
"No, no, certainly not!"
The military said the slain extremist brigade commander led a network of 10 groups in Baghdad that were implicated in murder, kidnappings and other criminal activity against Iraqi security forces and civilians. The suspect had established a group to collect information used to target Iraqi troops, according to the statement. "Credible intelligence indicates he and his group are responsible for the sectarian murder of several hundred Iraqi civilians in the past year," the statement said.

The man, who was not identified by the military, ran into another room after the assault force entered the building, according to the military's account. He was killed after troops forced the door open and saw him trying to grab a weapon, it said.
Just another innocent man with an AK and a reason to run.
U.S.-led forces have routinely carried out raids in Baghdad searching for Shiite extremists since they launched a security crackdown in the capital nearly a year ago. Residents frequently complain of unnecessarily heavy-handed behavior at the hands of the troops.

Abdul-Kadim's son, Hamza Jawad, said his father was trying to keep the troops out of the bedroom until his wife could dress properly, but one of the soldiers reached through a space in the door and opened fire. "My father is innocent, and he is not affiliated with any group," the 13-year-old said.
The groups are affiliated with him.

#1  Yet they still have money to buy missiles to fire on Israeli civilians. I hope they starve.

#2  So five people are dead already because the hopital doesn't have power? Isn't the hospital supposed to have some kind of generator backup and fuel? Why not make it 500 dead? Probably couldn't assemble that many actors on short notice to put together one of those documentaries they know how to do so well. Just make sure the same guy doesn't show up 500 times this time, OK?

One of those unguided Qassam rockets missed a building full of kids by 40m a couple of days ago. Is there any outcry from the Paleostinians for that act? Would there have been if that missile had hit the building and killed a bunch of kids?

Perhaps they would let in some Israelis to bring you a shipment for use at the hospitals and not fire on them on the way in or out?

I know, probably just a pipe dream.

If it's so bad, hang all the bad guys. Or at least point them out and let the Isrealis take care of them.

Israeli missile strikes kill two Gaza militants
Israeli missile strikes killed at least two Palestinian militants and critically wounded two others in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, local medical workers and Hamas officials said.

Hamas Islamists, who control the coastal territory, said the targets of the Israeli strikes were militants who were involved in firing makeshift rockets into southern Israel. The Israeli army confirmed it carried out the two missile strikes. Israel has killed dozens of Palestinians in Gaza -- many of them militants -- during the past week as part of what officials describe as a stepped-up campaign to curb rocket fire into the Jewish state. Gaza militants have fired more than 200 mortars and rockets at Israel in the past five days, the army said.

Darkness falls on Gaza
The lights went out on the Gaza Strip last night when the only electricity plant in the seaside territory closed down after Israel severed fuel supplies.
Life is tough. It's tougher when you're stoopid. Being vicious doesn't seem to alleviate it.
As the power failed, 1,000 men, women and children held a candlelit procession in Gaza City to protest at the breakdown of their basic services.
If I was the Israeli PM, which I'm not, to the relief of us all, I'd start my response with "Eat me!" and go downhill from there.
Some carried posters calling on the international community to come to their aid, others condemned the state of siege that they are living under. “I appeal to Egypt to break the siege because our children and sick people are dying,” Umm Raed, a 52-year-old housewife, said.
I feel approximately the same amount of sympathy Gazans feel for the inhabitants of Sderot.
Egypt has a border with Gaza, but has mainly shown solidarity with Israel in enforcing an embargo on the Hamas-run territory.
Could be that even the Egyptians realize that if somebody's raining rockets on your territory every day, they're telling you in their own special way that they don't need any assistance from you.
As mobile phone repeaters ran out of power, mobile phones started to lose reception, plunging many areas into silence as well as blackness.
The heart [urp!] burns bleeds.
Unable to end the ceaseless volleys of rockets fired by Gaza hardliners into its southern towns and farms, Israel cut off diesel supplies to the Strip, where 1.5 million Palestinians live, in an attempt to force its Islamist rulers to end the attacks.
It's more fun wearing ski masks and shooting rockets in the general direction of civilian areas than it is to build a functioning society.

#4  Gaza is used as a base of operations for multiple groups carrying out warfare against Israel. Gaza is governed by a democratically elected administration that openly and repeatedly calls for Israel to be destroyed and whose founding charter relies on the Protocols of Zion.

It is insane that Israel should provide any food, water or medical assistance to the enemy under any circumstances. Much as the rest of the West pays for the jihad against us through a ludicrous oil giveaway to the "House" of Saud, Israel pays for the enemies on its own doorstep.

The proper response to war is war. Instead we have hand-wringing and appeasement. I love Israel but until they learn the lessons of their own Prophets they deserve exactly what they get. So do the rest of us.

#15  Actually only some of the power is off in Gaza.

It's true that they have only 1 electricity plant but they still import electricity from Israel (which is generated at the Ashkalon plant that the long range Gaza rockets have come close to hitting).

#17  Gaza should get no support of any type from Israel; no water, no food, no fuel, no electricity. The crossings should be permanently closed. Let Gaza deal strictly with Egypt, and use a rolling barrage of artillery to pulverize any area that is either overtly or covertly complicit in the rocket attacks. Kill enough of the bastards and they'll eventually get the message. However, if it takes killing all of them to drive the message completely home, so be it. Gaza can be an object lesson for southern Lebanon and Syria.

Southeast Asia
Bomb blast injures eight soldiers, as top Thai officials visit the south
Even as the prime minister and other top officials were going South to review the progress current status of the jihad insurgency, an undetermined number of terrorists insurgents detonated a bomb using a cell phone signal near a railway station in Narathiwat's Rue So district, injuring eight soldiers. The new violence occurred as a military unit on foot-patrol to ensure safety for railway passengers were assaulted. The government soldiers and the presumed insurgents exchanged gunfire for five minutes before the assailants withdrew.

In nearby Pattani province, a police informant was gunned down on Monday morning in the provincial seat. Abdultorlae Tohadam was shot in a drive-by shooting riding a motorcycle and died at the scene.

The prime minister, accompanied by Defence Minister Boonrawd Somtas, Army Chief Anupong Paojinda , and National Police Chief Seripisuth Temiyavej, flew to Yala Monday to convene a meeting with officials from the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC). Prior to the meeting, the premier disclosed that he was going to hear an inventory of SBPAC's problems from the SBPAC.

He conceded the continuing jihad insurgency in the restive region could not be tackled in the near future even though the government has more local support and more coordination among state agencies concerned.
But if the government had more support and coordination, it would mean that the problem was being tackled, no?

Gen. Surayud stressed that the Army has been instructed to improve its intelligence as some local soldiers were found to be involved in information leakage to the terrorists insurgents.
"Listen guys. I need you to spy like you've never spied before. And no more leaking, you hear?"
The loss of classified military information was brought to light recently when two soldiers and a civil servant were arrested on charges of leaking confidential material to terrorists insurgents. Seven police officers were later taken in for questioning on suspicion of handing information to jihadis insurgents.

The visit came a week after eight soldiers were ambushed in a deadly bomb attack in Narathiwat's Chanae district, in which one soldier was beheaded.

Sayyaf head chopper arrested in Philippines
Philippine security forces have apprehended an Islamic militant suspected to have taken part in the beheading of 10 Marines on a southern island last year, the head of the national police said on Monday.
Truncheon time!
Avelino Razon said a team of soldiers and police officers arrested Aramil Sulayman at a Muslim village in Shariff Kabunsuan province, on the southern island of Mindanao, on Saturday.

"Our boys never gave him the chance to resist and flee," Razon told a news conference at the main police headquarters in Manila, where Sulayman was brought before the media.

Sulayman, wearing an orange prison uniform and in handcuffs, smiled but was prevented from replying when asked whether he was involved in the beheading of soldiers on Basilan island on July 10 last year.

Razon said Sulayman, who belongs to the Abu Sayyaf group, was among 128 rebels facing murder charges for the beheadings. He is the first to be arrested, although there were reports some were killed by the military in fighting on Basilan island last year.

The smallest of several Muslim rebel groups active in the south of the largely Roman Catholic country, the Abu Sayyaf is responsible blamed for the Philippines' worst militant attack, the bombing of a ferry in 2004 that killed 100 people. But some of those named in the killing of the Marines have links to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the largest rebel group in the country. The group is finalising a peace deal with the government.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka Says Rebel Commander Killed in Fighting Near Jaffna
Sri Lanka's military said soldiers killed a commander of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam as the army fought on three fronts in the Jaffna area, the last region controlled by the Tamil Tigers.

The LTTE commander was killed in Thendamarachchi south of Jaffna yesterday, the army said on its Web site. Troops advanced on rebel positions during clashes yesterday in Mannar, Vavuniya and Welioya, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

LTTE forces drove off soldiers trying to overrun bases in the Manalaaru Ceylon areas yesterday, TamilNet reported on its Web site, citing unidentified Tamil Tiger officials.

Sri Lanka's army has stepped up its attacks since capturing the eastern region in July, leaving the LTTE in control only of bases in the north to continue its 25-year fight for a separate homeland. The government last week formally ended a 2002 cease- fire with the rebels after President Mahinda Rajapaksa said in November that terrorism will be eradicated in the country.

The LTTE is ``in total disarray'' as a result of the offensives, Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, the army chief, said Dec. 31. At least 22 rebels were killed in fighting Jan. 19, the military said yesterday.

Sri Lanka's military has targeted the LTTE leadership in the north since capturing the east. Velupillai Prabhakaran, the LTTE leader, was wounded in an air raid in November, according to the government, and the head of the political wing was killed two months ago. The group's military intelligence chief was killed Jan. 6.

Terror Networks
Question Time for Ayman
CAIRO, Egypt - Sympathizers submitted hundreds of questions to al-Qaida deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri's "on-line interview" before a recent deadline. Among them: Why hasn't al-Qaida attacked the U.S. again, why isn't it attacking the Israelis and when will it be more active in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria?

So far, there have been no answers.

Al-Qaida's media arm, Al-Sahab, announced in December that al-Zawahri would take questions from the public posted on Islamic militant Web sites and would respond "as soon as possible."
