Nigeria: Al-Qaeda Suspect Tortured By SSS Gives Evidence Today
A suspected "Al-Qaeda" member standing trial on charges of terrorism, will today give evidence before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on how he was tortured by security men to confessing he is a terrorist. Muhammed Ashafa, 41, had alleged that he gave over 20 different statements confessing he was an Al-Qaeda trainee in Pakistan after he was seriously tortured by men of the State Security Service (SSS).

His counsel, Mrs Mary I. Obegolu, had told the court on the last adjournment that between August 2004 when Ashafa was deported to Nigeria by the Pakistani government for being an illegal immigrant and March 2006, he had faced inhuman treatment in the hands of the SSS . Mrs Obegolu said: "Ashafa was beaten to stupor just to give the statement the SSS needed to prove he was a terrorist. In the process of the torture, they had his throat broken and that has developed into a tumour." She said the statement which the government is holding against Ashafa was masterminded by the SSS to prove he was guilty of terrorist offences.

The presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, adjourned the case to today for Ashafa to prove he was actually tortured by the SSS. But the SSS had maintained they have evidence to prove that Ashafa is a terrorist.

Ashafa is accused of receiving $1 500 from an al-Qaeda group in Pakistan with the aim of planning attacks on American interests in Nigeria. He is charged with receiving and decoding messages from an al-Qaeda cell in Pakistan for Nigerian 'terror group' with the intention of making the attack. Since 2004, Ashafa has been facing trial from prison.

Danish police arrest almost 30 people in 8th night of youth violence

#1  "The violence appears to be subsiding after peaking over the weekend, police said."

Yeah, once you jail the agitators, things quiet down.

#2  The Europeans could stop a lot of the nonsense by having a "100% arrest" policy for rioters.

It takes prior planning, but when a riot happens, you seal it off, photograph and snag every one of them--who then get maximum time for damages.

There is a substance that can be sprayed on both asphalt and concrete to make it too slick to walk across. This means that police don't have to be there in overwhelming numbers to make the bust.

#7  Nah. The Danes are too multiculti, it'll never happen.

And nobody can be deported, the tranzis naturalized the Muslims. All of this is too little, too late.

#9  Streetsweepers might be better than the 7.62 for controlling rioters.

But I still think they'd get tired of rioting if the Danes published new cartoons every day. Deporting them would be the ideal solution but if the Danes can't do that they should try to wear them down and desensitize them with a constant barrage of offensive material in the media. Let free speech flourish unimpeded by PC bullcrap. Let the barbarians know that people can, and quite often will, say whatever they damn well please.

Soharwardy critic attacked, beaten in her Calgary home
For those of you watching Ezra Levant's showdown with the Alberta Human Rights Commission
Calgary police are investigating an assault on one of three women who recently launched a human rights complaint against a local Muslim leader. Police are looking for two people who pushed their way into the Coral Spring Mews N.E. home of Robina Butt about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Const. Paban Dhaliwal said a man and a woman knocked on the door of Butt's home, and when questioned, identified themselves as members of the press. When Butt opened the door, the couple forced their way into the home, pushing Butt against the wall a number of times and producing a weapon. Dhaliwal said the victim did not recognize the intruders. He said the woman was fully covered in a dark burka and was wearing black gloves. The male suspect is described as of East Indian descent, about 45 years old with a short moustache, five feet nine with a slim build and wearing blue jeans, a light shirt and black jacket.

Butt's husband, Najeeb, said his wife was badly shaken by the attack, suffering a number of cuts to her hand as well as bumps and bruises. "There were some neighbourhood kids coming home from school who were talking outside. We think the attackers might have thought they were coming to our house, so they ran off," said Najeeb Butt.

Robina Butt and two other Calgary women filed a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission in late December against Syed Soharwardy, president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada. The complaint alleges they were subjected to abusive language and threats during a Nov. 11 meeting at the Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Centre, where Soharwardy also serves as imam.

Soharwardy has denied all allegations in the human rights complaint.

Butt said he's convinced Wednesday's attack was not random. Butt said the male attacker told his wife, "We come from Al-Madinah; if you ever talk anything about Al-Madinah . . . this is the first instalment."

When contacted by the Herald on Thursday evening, Soharwardy said no one from the Al-Madinah Centre would be involved in such a violent incident. "We are law-abiding people. We had nothing to do with this. I condemn this attack absolutely, and I urge the police to do everything to find the people who were involved in this and bring them to justice."

'Candidates hire Taliban look-alikes as security guards'
Many candidates in North Waziristan “hired” services of “security guards” who “looked like Taliban” on the polling day, eyewitnesses and officials said.

“They had long beard and hair and dressed like the Taliban. But they were not really Taliban men who generally fight the Pakistani security forces in Tribal Areas or the US forces in Afghanistan,” the eyewitnesses said, wishing not to be named. However, it was unclear who the highly armed men were, if not the Taliban. A senior official in the agency said he saw armed men with a Taliban outlook roaming around. “These people were carrying heavy weapons like rocket-propelled grenades to protect candidates,” he said.

Series of blasts on election day
Around eleven blasts were reported outside various polling stations in the country –mostly in Balochistan - on Monday despite strict security measures on the occasion of the general elections. Reports of rocket firing were also received in Khuzdar, Kohlu and Naseerabad, Online reported.

In Kohlu, a rocket landed near a polling station, but no loss of life was reported. Also, the Frontier Corps arrested two suspected people at Saryab Road during the polling for their alleged involvement in bomb blasts.

A bomb blast was heard in Quetta’s Nauroz Sports Complex area where several polling stations were located, while a small bomb exploded near a polling station on the city’s outskirts, police and witnesses told AFP. Elsewhere in Balochistan, two small bombs exploded separately near un-crowded polling stations, but there were no casualties, police said. Also, militants blew up two pipelines supplying natural gas to a main plant in the town of Sui, officials said. Baloch Republican Army purported spokesman Sarbaz Baloch accepted responsibility for those attacks.

Bajaur: In Bajaur, a bomb blast ripped through a wall of a polling station while around 300 people queued to cast their votes, officials and witnesses said. No one was injured and polling resumed shortly afterwards, government official Muwaz Afridi said. “We are not afraid of death, because Allah has fixed the time of death and there is no escape from it, so we have come here to fulfil a national duty,” 50-year-old voter Naemat Khan said.

In Malakand, a blast partially damaged the walls of a school building where polling was being done, APP reported. A rocket-propelled grenade hit a polling station in a remote part of Sindh, a police official said.

The elections were postponed in NA-37 Parachinar after the violence erupted in the area when a suicide bomber killed around 47 people and injured 150 others.

    Pak-Afghan border sealed
The two main border posts between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been closed as a security measure during Pakistan’s parliamentary elections on Monday, officials said. The Torkham and Spin Boldak posts, used by thousands of people daily, were shut on the request of Pakistan and for the “smooth” running of the elections, they said. Torkham closed late on Sunday for all vehicle and pedestrian traffic and was due to reopen on Tuesday, the border police commander in the area Chitral Shinwari told AFP.

Spin Boldak, further south, would be closed for three days to vehicles, but would be opened on Tuesday and Wednesday for pedestrians, Kandahar border police commander General Abdul Razeq said. “We have agreed with Pakistani authorities that the border be closed for three days for a smooth parliamentary elections in Pakistan with no security problems,” the commander said.

However, a suicide attacker blew up a car bomb near an international military convoy in a market area of Spin Boldak on Monday, killing at least eight civilians, police said.

Women stopped from voting in Pakistan
VOTING stopped at women-only polling stations in parts of northwest Pakistan after elders decided that women should not cast ballots, police and officials said.

Peshawar district mayor Ghulam Ali said voting had to be discontinued in Maryamzai, Budaber and other areas on the outskirts of Peshawar, which is close to the Afghan border where al-Qaeda and Taliban militants are active. Men and women vote at separate locations throughout Pakistan, an Islamic republic. "I have reports that elders in the area decided that voting by women is against our culture," Mr Ali said. "This is their tradition. We can do nothing."
After all, you just represent the powerlessness of the state ...
Chief election commissioner Qazi Farooq, in a televised speech yesterday, warned that stern action would be taken if people tried to prevent women from casting their votes.
    "What kind of action?"
    "Stern action!"
Pakistan has 81 million registered voters, about 36 million of whom are women.

    Iraq
Modified Tanks make it easier and safer to Off AQI
CAMP TAJI — Technicians are modifying M1-A2 Abrams tanks to make them more effective in the dense, urban Baghdad environment. For Multi-National Division – Baghdad tankers in the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division these equipment modifications are taking place in the form of the Tank Urban Survival Kit being added to their M1-A2 Abrams tanks.

In each of the Striker Brigade’s two previous deployments it operated in more rural areas of Diyala and Salah al-Din provinces.

These TUSK additions include an increase to the Soldiers’ safety and the tanks’ effectiveness in operations in this area north of Baghdad. They are currently being installed in Abrams tanks throughout MND-B by General Dynamics, a government contractor responsible for fielding, issuing and maintaining of these systems.

The modifications include a new driver’s safety seat, improved tank armor and vision enhancements, as well as an attached sniper rifle, said Shawn Safford, a Gatesville, Texas, native, who works as the senior tank systems technician in MND-B for General Dynamics.

Sgt. 1st Class Sean Rinder, a Colorado Springs, Colo., native, who serves as the platoon sergeant for 2nd Platoon, Company C, 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, 3rd BCT, operated these tanks during the unit’s previous deployment in the Diyala province. “Last time I was here, I had to reload the (.50-cal. machine gun) while I was in contact,” he said. “I had to expose myself from the waist up to do that.”

With the new commander’s cupola armor, Rinder said, he would not be as exposed if he were in the same situation. While he said he has always been confident in his equipment and crew, the modifications will add to that security blanket.

The increased level of security is echoed outside the tank as well. Tankers are able to more precisely target an enemy with a decreased risk to the surroundings because of the gunner’s sniper rifle, being added to the tank. “We’re still lethal at long ranges without destroying everything. It mitigates the collateral damage,” said 2nd Lt. Frank Simmons, a Colorado Springs, Colo., native, who serves as the platoon leader for the 2nd Plt., Co. C, 1-68 AR.

The new visual aids will also help the Soldiers target enemies with more precision. These devices will assist the tankers in positively identifying enemies, said Sgt. Albert Arca, a San Diego native, who serves as a tank gunner with the 2nd Plt., Co. C, 1-68 AR.

For tankers, such as Arca, the improved safety features will provide a greater piece of mind when conducting missions in sector. “I’ll be able to focus more on the mission,” Arca said. “(The new equipment) can save someone’s life.”

#4  A good rule of thumb for the development of military equipment in wartime is that the people who use it want guns sticking out everywhere and every available inch used for ammo.

Some of the American WWII aircraft, by the end of the war, looked like a pincushion of barrels, and were firing weapons that engineers would have guessed would tear their aircraft apart. One aircraft gun had such recoil that it felt like the plane halted for a moment after firing it.

#5  The M1A2 SEP builds on the digitized M1A2 platform with an improved armor package of third generation steel-encased depleted uranium armor, a new command and control system, second-generation FLIR thermal sights that include a Commander’s Independent Thermal Viewer (CITV) for “hunter-killer” operation, the Under Armor Auxiliary Power Unit (UAAPU) that lets crews run key electronics without running the engine, and a Thermal Management System (TMS – i.e. improved air conditioning for crew & electronics). The M1A2 SEP also features enhanced electronics like color maps and displays, improved networked communications, high-density computer memory and increased microprocessing speed, a more user friendly “Soldier Machine Interface (SMI)”, and an open operating computing system that will make future upgrades and additions easier.

Not sure why that's needed. The M2 TUSK commander's station already has a M2 BMG or M19 grenade launcher mounted on the CROWS remote weapons system. It's stabilized with day/night magnifying optics and makes a good sniper weapon.

Longer range, the mortar's good, but 700 yards?

#11  I heard they just uparmored the commander's M2 - kinda like the cupola on the old M-60. Sniper rifle is there for when they need more range than a coax, and dont want to use the 120 or large amounts of rounds from a regular M2. Its suppsoed to be a do-all upgrade for MOUT. SO I bet someone thought it was a bright idea.

Myself, I'd rather make sure they have a phone to talk to the crew from the outside with. ANd a bottom hatch to take a whiz out of (like the M60).

Egyptian police find 100 kilograms TNT cached near Gaza border
Egyptian security forces on Monday uncovered an explosives cache containing 100 kilograms of TNT hidden in sacks near the country's volatile border with the Gaza Strip, a police officer said. The cache, found buried a few feet deep in the soil in a deserted area of the northern Sinai peninsula, came after police acted on a tip from local Bedouins, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media.

The find took place near Sheik Zuwiyed town, some 25 kilometers west of the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. The Bedouins led the authorities to the location of the explosives. A total of three sacks of TNT were found, the official said.

Smuggling across the border into Gaza or Israel has long provided a livelihood for some Bedouin. Weapons, cigarettes and foreigners seeking jobs in Israel are all taken surreptitiously across the border.

Israel Readies Patriot Missiles in North
Israel has deployed U.S.-made Patriot air defense missiles near the northern city of Haifa in case of an attack by Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas in response to the killing of the group's top commander, security officials said Monday.

Hezbollah and its Iranian backers swiftly blamed Israel for last week's car bombing that killed Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus, Syria. Israel's government denied involvement, but Israel is widely believed to have carried out similarly daring, complex and deadly strikes against other terror masterminds in the past. In his eulogy for Mughniyeh, Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah vowed to retaliate against Israeli and Jewish targets anywhere in the world.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel is "prepared on all fronts" for an attack. Security officials said the a Patriot battery was put on standby Sunday for the first time since Israel's monthlong war with Hezbollah in the summer of 2006, when the Lebanese guerrillas fired nearly 4,000 rockets into northern Israel. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. The Israeli military said it did not comment on "operational readiness."

    Southeast Asia
Military claims to have found Dulmatin's body in Tawi-Tawi
A body believed to be that of Indonesian terrorist leader Dulmatin, wanted for the October 2002 Bali bombings, was recovered Monday afternoon by a joint military team in Tawi-Tawi province.

Intelligence reports said the body was found 1:30 p.m. at the vicinity of Sitio Salisit in Balimbing village, Panglima Sugala town in Tawi-Tawi. "(The) said corpse was jointly identified by informants with notable wounds in the head, chest and right foot to include clothing in physical characteristics matched with previous revelations," the report said. The body was exhumed for DNA testing for confirmation.

Reached for comments, Marine commandant Maj. Gen. Ben Dolorfino said that if the remains turn out to be that really of Dulmatin, his death could be traced to the January 31 clash in the province. "That is the report we got from our units in Tawi-Tawi. Remember that during the January 31 encounter, he was reported injured," Dolorfino told reporters.

Dolorfino said an informant led government troops to Dulmatin's supposed gravesite and that based on the informant's accounts of the slain terrorist's injuries, "it matched with (the accounts) of our witness. This is a big blow to the JI and the Abu Sayyaf."

Dulmatin, who had been a target of a manhunt operations in Mindanao, was a senior figure in the militant group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI). He was one of the most wanted terrorists in Southeast Asia. He is also known as Amar Usmanan, Joko Pitoyo, Joko Pitono, Abdul Matin, Pitono, Muktarmar, Djoko, and Noval.
Also as Sam, Harry, Herb, Tom, Hop Ching, Dick, Jane, Sally, and Honeychile.

    Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan troops capture rebel area in north
(Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan Army said it captured an area controlled by Tamil Tiger rebels in the northern Mannar district Monday morning and killed 10 rebels. The Army said in a statement that the troops captured an area of about 600 square meters in eastern Mannar around 5:30 a.m. (2400 GMT) within an LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) defense line. "Ten Tiger terrorists who resisted the move lost their lives in the surprise attack. At least 10 more Tigers received injuries in the skirmishes," said the statement.

The Army said one soldier was killed and four others were injured in the battle. Intensive military conflicts are underway in the north, with the government determining to defeat the LTTE before the end of this year. The military said more than 700 people have been killed in the escalating conflict since the beginning of this year. The LTTE has been fighting for a separate homeland for minority Tamils in the north and east for more than two decades, resulting in the death of more than 70,000 people.

    Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria invades Lebanon, shoots and wounds a Lebanese
The Syrian intelligence forces and Syrian border guards invaded Lebanon yesterday and stormed the house of Hussein Ali Aldedda and fired three bullets at him wounding him in his hand, elbow and hip , before withdrawing back to the Syrian territory according to the Arabic daily Al-Nahar. Aldedda ( 41) lives in the Bekaa region , inside the Lebanese territory near the Syrian border . No explanations were given for the Syrian actions .

Aldedda was taken to the al Rayyan hospital in Baalbeck area for treatment . Aldedda is reportedly in a stable condition . Aldedda’s relatives were shocked about this "Mafia" type action by the Syrians

Lebanon has been trying to demarcate the borders but Syria has refused . The Syrians do not even recognize Lebanon as an independent , and sovereign state . Syria treats Lebanon as its own farm. It is expected that the government of prime minister Fouad Siniora will immediately complain to the United Nations security council about this outrageous violation of Lebanese sovereignty and urge the UN to put an end to Syrian incursions.

The Syrian troops withdrew under international pressure from Lebanon in April 2005 , after 29 years of military rule following the assassination of Lebanon's former PM Rafik Hariri . Syria was blamed for his murder but it denied any involvement . Syria continues to exercise influence in Lebanon through its Hezbollah-led allies
