Insurgents torch school in Afghanistan
Militants set ablaze a secondary school in Afghanistan’s southern city of Kandahar on Friday, authorities said, in at least the third attack on educational institutes this year. Gunmen set fire to classrooms, books and offices at the Mian Abdul Hakim school for boys and girls, said Mohammad Anwar, head of the Kandahar province Education Department. “They burnt to ash everything, the building, books and chairs,” he told AFP. More than 1,200 students study at the school, including up to 200 girls, said Anwar.

He blamed the attack on “enemies of Afghanistan,” a term often used to refer to Taliban insurgents.

In a similar incident on January 31, militants burned down a primary school in the province of Logar, near Kabul. On January 1, a newly built school for refugee children was torched in the eastern Nangarhar province.

The tactic appears to be intended to disrupt progress in education, apparently one of the most successful sectors of the post-Taliban government’s largely Western-funded reconstruction. The Education Ministry said in January that the Taliban had burned down 183 schools and killed 61 teachers and students in the past 18 months. Attacks by the insurgents had also closed down nearly 400 schools and deprived around 300,000 children from access to education, it added.

The British charity Oxfam said in November that nearly seven million Afghan children were still not in school although nearly the same number were enrolled.

My take:

Another anti- American hack job by the Socialist Brit Media.

So predictable, a Twerp Brit Reporter cum-Guru who knows nothing but his brain washed Socialist biases twists up a piece which could have been done by any of his clones going back 50 years.

This Brit "reporter" couldn't park a bicycle let alone strip a Ma Duce or search a Vil.

why American Commanders even talk give these guys the time of day I'll never understand.

If he asked me for a good story, I would recommend that he travel to some thick Talib country with only an interpreter for a sure Pulitzer win.

#4  in watching this it seemed obvious to me that a warning before the search (especially given to the women) that if anything is found the forces will blow the house followed with the destruction of the property after the discoveries would go a long way.

a clear understanding that hiding weapons will cause the house to be leveled would put a lot of internal pressure on the people to come out with it. what i saw was people lying and lying and lying and no consequences for their lying leads them to repeat the process over again.

#5  I took this reporter was Australian. Cold to him is the temperature Foster's is served at.

Demographically, I see Afghanistan as nearly an ideal place (if it had a friendly port then 100% ideal) for a proxy war where 60% of the population hates the Pashtuns bigots for the atrocities they have committed. The west doesn't need to do the fighting in Afghanistan. Trainers and supply troops equipping the Tajk, Uzbeks, Hazaras etc to wage traditional warfare and carry off loot and women would subdue our enemies much more quickly and inexpensively.

3 Taliban killed, 2 wounded in S. Afghanistan
(Xinhua) -- Afghan and foreign forces, while patrolling, were ambushed by Taliban insurgents Friday in southern province of Zabul and the ensuing fighting left three militants killed and two more injured, a local official said. The around half-an-hour clash took place in Mizan district of Zabul at 8 a.m. local time, district chief Mohammad Younus Akhunzada told Xinhua via phone. "A Taliban commander Mullah Mohammad Rhain and his two followers were killed." The combined force suffered no casualties in the incident, he added.

Africa North
We will not bow to Al Qaeda's demands: Austria
Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer appealed on Friday to Al Qaeda’s North Africa wing to release two Austrian tourists but said he had no intention of yielding to the hostage-takers’ demands.

“Our priority is the health of the hostages. Hence we appeal to the kidnappers to free the hostages unconditionally,” Gusenbauer told reporters on arrival for the final day of a European Union summit in Brussels. Gusenbauer said he would raise the issue for discussion at the summit.

He said Austria was in touch with the authorities in the region, adding, “We do not intend to meet the demands.” Al Qaeda demanded on Thursday the release of militants held in Tunisia and Algeria within three days. The three-day ultimatum began at midnight on Thursday, according to a statement issued by Al Qaeda on an Islamist website.

Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik said on Thursday that efforts were being made to secure the release of the hostages but noted that the demands were outside Vienna’s jurisdiction. In its posting which contained the pictures of hostages Andrea Kloiber, 43, and Wolfgang Ebner, 51, Al Qaeda said the demands and a list of the names of the group’s prisoners had been sent to Vienna through unidentified mediators.

The group, waging a violent campaign against government forces and foreign interests in North Africa, said its members had been jailed for confronting “the new crusade against Islam”.

The hostages, who went missing last month during a trip to Tunisia, appeared in the pictures dressed in robes and surrounded by militants in a desert area. Their captors were armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

Al-Qaida's branch posts photos of kidnapped Austrians
Al-Qaida's branch for North Africa posted a new Internet statement Thursday, setting conditions and giving a three-day deadline for the release of two Austrian tourists it claimed to have kidnapped in Tunisia last month.

In the statement -- which included six photographs purportedly showing Austrians Wolfgang Ebner and Andrea Kloiber -- al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa said it would set the two free if some of the group's members were released from jails in Tunisia and Algeria. The posting gave Austrian authorities three days, starting Thursday midnight, to comply.

"Austria is responsible for the lives of the two hostages in the event of the expiration of the time period and not responding to our demands," it said and urged families of the two Austrians to pressure their government to meet the group's demands and "save the lives of the two tourists."

The woman in the photographs, said to be Kloiber, was shown wearing a blue headscarf and her face was obscured. According to extremist Islamist beliefs, showing a woman's face in public and in images is prohibited as un-Islamic. Both she and the man, who had a graying mustache and a short beard, were wearing traditional Arab robes.

The pair were surrounded by hard boyz militants with rocket propelled grenade launchers, some masked, seated on the ground in an open, desert area with some bush vegetation. A white pickup truck was also seen in the photos.

The statement also said the Austrian government has been informed of the mujahideens' demands and that they had handed over to unnamed "negotiators" the list of names of their detained members who should be released from jails. There were no details on how many were on the list.

On Monday, the al-Qaida branch first said in an audio recording that it was behind the Feb. 22 kidnapping of the two Austrian tourists, saying it was an act of retribution for Western cooperation with Israel. The audio statement claimed the hostages were in good health. U.S.-based SITE group, which tracks militant messaging, said it had also intercepted the al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa statement Thursday.

Retired Kuwaiti pop star joins al-Qaeda, Goes to Afghanistan to Die
A retired Kuwaiti superstar singer has recently the left the Gulf emirate for Afghanistan to join ranks with al-Qaeda and Taliban forces in fighting foreign troops there, according to a press report published Saturday.

Hussein al-Ahmad, who was until recently one of the Gulf’s most famous pop stars, decided to join “his Mujahideen brothers in Afghanistan to support Islam and fight alongside his fellow Muslims in al-Qaeda”, reported Kuwaiti daily Al-Rai Saturday.

Al-Ahmad has previously told Kuwait’s Al-Rai TV that the reason he decided to quit singing was “a dream” where he saw his “own journey from this world into the hereafter through death”.

“I’ve seen horrors and terrors I don’t think anybody else has. I thanked Allah for being alive when I woke up and I was grateful for the fact that He has given me a second chance,” the retired singer said.

“I then informed my family and friends that I would retire from the dark world of sin (singing). Since then, my job has been to warn against arts and their sinful atmosphere.”

The retired singer will soon appear in his new military outfit in Afghanistan, in a video expected soon on a website known to be affiliated with al-Qaeda extremists, according to the paper.
We can but hope he inspires his Hollywood brethren to join him there.

Europe
Dutch police arrest Pakistani on terror charges
Dutch police had arrested a Pakistani man, who they said was linked to a network of extremists that was largely dismantled after raids in Barcelona this January, they said on Friday. The 26-year-old suspect was picked up late on Thursday in the south-western Dutch town of Breda, the public prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcabsur said when the group was broken up that it was on the verge of “violent action”, as materials for manufacturing explosive devices were found in the Barcelona raids. The attacks would be claimed in the name of Al-Qaeda by warlord Baitullah Mehsud from Pakistan’s Tribal Areas, the media reported.

The police had been investigating the suspect, who was not identified by name, since late January acting on information of the security services here. He was under 24-hour observation by police and was finally arrested “to prevent terrorist activities”, the prosecutor’s office said.

U.S.: Canadian pleads guilty to terrorism charge
(Xinhuanet) -- A Canadian man pleaded guilty Thursday in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to a federal terrorism charge for plotting to blow up the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline in 2000.

Prosecutors say Alfred Heinz Reumayr wanted to drive up the price of oil in order to profit from the sale of oil and gas futures he had planned to purchase. The plot was broken up after a co-conspirator went to federal authorities. Reumayr, 58, of New Westminster, British Columbia, pleaded guilty to one count of terrorism transcending national boundaries in an agreement with prosecutors accepted Thursday by U.S. District Judge Bruce Black. He faces 13 years in prison; his lawyer said the sentencing hearing could be held this summer.

Prosecutors say Reumayr planned a series of explosions along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System in early January 2000 aimed at disrupting the oil supply from northern to southern Alaska. Had it been successful, it would have had "an enormous negative economic and environmental impact on the United States and Canada," said William Newell, special agent in charge of the Phoenix field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Authorities said Reumayr sought help with the scheme from a former Green Beret and explosives expert with whom he had served time in a Texas prison. Jim Paxton of Albuquerque — who is now dead — went to the ATF and became an informant.

Paxton testified in a 2001 extradition hearing in British Columbia that Reumayr wanted the explosions to coincide with Jan. 1, 2000, to capitalize on fears of computer failures. Reumayr has been in custody since August 1999 and was indicted on eight counts. He lost his fight against extradition to the U.S. in 2006, when the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed his appeal.

43 militants arrested in Swat
Security forces and police arrested 43 militants, including five key aides of rebel cleric Maulana Fazlullah, during a daylong search operation in Swat on Friday, while a minor was killed in one of three remote-controlled blasts. The operation was conducted by both army and police officials. The sources said that the security forces had started to prepare for a major operation, adding that a curfew had been imposed from 3pm and would last for an indefinite period of time.

However, an Inter-Services Public Relations statement released on Friday said that the curfew was imposed to facilitate the search and cordon operations. Separately, a minor was killed and two people injured in three remote-controlled bomb blasts. The blasts also completely destroyed two vehicles.

'One outfit behind Lahore blast'
Investigators suspect that a single proclaimed offender-led organisation is involved in the recent three suicide bombings in Lahore, Daily Times has learned.

Sources close to investigators said the group was headed by Zafar Ahmed, alias Qari Zafar, a resident of Sanghar (Sindh), whom a court had declared a proclaimed offender in the US consulate, Karachi, attack case.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Tariq Pervez said that Ahmed might also have been involved in Lahore blasts. He said that evidence available to investigators hinted at the involvement of a single group in all three of the recent Lahore bombings.

However, he said: “We’re in no position to say anything with certainty until we get something substantial.” Sources said investigators suspected that a single group had bombed the Navy War College on March 4, and FIA provincial headquarters and a Model Town bungalow on March 11. They said two bombers had exploded bombs, made of potassium chlorate using electronic triggers. Sources said 40kg of explosive material was used at FIA offices and 30 kg at the Model Town bungalow.

Militants kill US spy: officials
Militants killed a tribesman after accusing him of working as a US spy in a tribal area bordering Afghanistan, officials said on Friday. The militants shot and then slit the throat of the 30-year-old man, in the latest in a series of executions of people allegedly working for US and NATO forces across the border. His body was dumped on a road in Sham, a town between the North and South Waziristan tribal regions, a security official told AFP on condition of anonymity. “They left a note claiming that he was a US spy, and warning that anyone working for the US will suffer the same fate,” an official said.

#4  Isn't it still winter in those parts? I'd think a dragonfly buzzing around might be a bit noticeable just now... No doubt by spring miniaturization will have proceeded to the point that the fly on the wall will be one of ours. At that point paranoia is a quite reasonable response!

Marne Rugged to Eliminate Remaining Extremists, Build Capacity
CAMP VICTORY — On the heels of Operations Marne Thunderbolt and Grand Slam south of Baghdad, Multi-National Division – Center will push further south to squeeze extremists during Operation Marne Rugged, which kicks off March 15.

The operation will cover a rural area southeast of Baghdad, south of the Tigris River in the area of operation of 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division and 3rd Brigade, 8th Iraqi Army.

One phase of the operation will be the establishment of Patrol Base Summers, a joint Iraqi Army and Coalition forces base. It is named for Staff Sgt. Vincent Summers, who paid the ultimate sacrifice with 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment during Operation Iraqi Freedom III.

“We have found that when we put Iraqi Army and Coalition forces in a patrol base in an area like Summers, the population comes to us and gives us that refined intelligence, so that we can do precise operations against any al-Qaeda that may be in this area,” said Col. Tom James, commander of 4th BCT, during a pre-operation briefing at Forward Operating Base Zulu March 10.

In addition to establishing the patrol base and eliminating al-Qaeda and any other extremists, Marne Rugged will focus on capacity building. In anticipation of the operation, the Coalition and IA have already identified approximately 2,500 Iraqi security volunteers who are eager to transition into Sons of Iraq in the short-term and into Iraqi Security Forces in the long-term.

“We see two major tasks that we have to accomplish: One, we have to integrate the Iraqi security volunteers,” James said. “The other is to provide quick-impact, small projects to the local civilians.”

Col. Ali Abdul Hussein, commander of 3/8 IA, also cited the importance of local projects, in particular repairing water pumps that he said were damaged by terrorists.

Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, commander of MND-C, told Hussein that Coalition forces could help the IA fix the pumps in addition to facilitating other projects.

“I believe we have a window of opportunity,” Lynch said. “You see, I’ve got this idea to transition from security to stability, and stability is about jobs, services, schools, and we can help with all that.”

Death toll in Baghdad car bombing rises to 10
(Xinhua) -- The death toll from a car bomb attack in central Baghdad on Thursday rose to 10, with 50 others wounded, an Interior Ministry source said on Friday. "The final toll from the Bab al-Sharji area car bombing rose to10 killed and 50 others injured," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The attack took place at about 2:00 p.m. (1100 GMT) when a booby-trapped car parking near the commercial building of al-Khaiyam in the crowded area of Bab al-Sharji detonated, the source said. Earlier, the source put the toll at seven civilians killed and 20 others wounded.

Iraqi police and Mehdi militia clash despite truce
Members of Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's militia clashed with Iraqi police in the southern city of Kut on Friday, a day after a close Sadr aide ordered militiamen to abide by a ceasefire, police said.

Mehdi Army militiamen clashed with Iraqi and U.S. soldiers earlier this week in Kut, 170 km (105 miles) southeast of Baghdad, sparking concerns a ceasefire may unravel and lead to an upsurge in violence. The fighting on Friday, in which one policeman was killed and two civilians injured, police said, started soon after the end of the funerals of men killed on Tuesday.

"Kut has been lost and I'm not able to fight the gunmen with the few troops I have," said Lieutenant Aziz al-Amara, who commands a rapid reaction unit.

Mortars and small arms were used in the clashes, which took place in the Izzeh, Sharqia, and Hawia districts of the city.

Gun battles in Kut killed a total of 11 people on Tuesday, according to the city's police chief, prompting U.S. special forces to call in air strikes after requests from Iraqi authorities for help.

#1  This is Shia on Shia action, with the IP trying to calm things down. While we should root for massive losses, the two side shoot so poorly that the civilians are in the most danger. A combo of negotiations and reinforcements from the INA will settle things down eventually.

Perhaps he's not enjoying it quite so much.

German tourist stabbed near Jordan's Al Husseini Mosque
(Xinhua) -- A German citizen was stabbed near Al Husseini Mosque in the middle of Amman on Friday, Jordan's Public Security spokesman Major Mohammad Al Khatib said.

The injured tourist was immediately admitted to one of hospital and a medical surgery was performed for him, Khatib was quoted by Jordanian official news agency Petra. Al-Quds Brigades sez their rockets hit Israeli rocket launchers
Islamic Jihad military wing, Al-Quds Brigades, said it attacked Israeli rocket launchers east of Gaza city. It said in a statement its fighters fired two "Quds" rockets against rocket launchers used by the Israeli army to attack the Palestinians. The fighters confirmed that the rockets hit their targets, it added.

The Israelis did not yet confirm the attack.

#4  I believe this can be counted as bullshit by he title alone, The Israelis don't use "Rocket Launchers" they use helicopters, drones and artillery, no rockets, they do use missiles launched from the above Predators, Helicopters, etc.

#6  The story says the rockets were fired against the Israeli rocket launchers... It also says that they hit their target... IT does not say what their target actually was.

My guess is that the earth was their target, and sho-nuff they hit it.

Hamas wings Israeli bird
Hamas said its fighters fired at and hit an Israeli helicopter flying over northern Gaza Strip on Friday. Hamas military wing, Izzuddin Al-Qassam brigades, said in a statement that it used medium and heavy machineguns in its attack against an Israeli helicopter gunship and hit it. The machineguns hit the helicopter which, according to the statement, left the area and made an emergency landing inside the Jewish state.

The Israeli army acknowledged the attack and said the body of the helicopter was hit by the brigades, and considered it a dangerous development against the Israeli airforce.

#4  The IDF knows the source of the fire. They just need some dumb bombs dropped and make a 100 meter blast radius. Rapid, overwhelming response. Rinse and repeat. No negotiations. Let Hamas beg the IDF. This could be over in a week.

#5  Send 'em three B-52s and all the iron bombs they can carry. Hell, rebuild a dozen B-29s and send THEM against Hamass and the Gaza. Same results. I'm sure the Israelis even have the technology and equipment to convert a 707 or 737 into a bomber, pdq. A-10s are ok, but they don't dig very deep holes. 500lb bombs with four foot fuse extenders do a GREAT job of clearing the area and converting rubble into sand. Lot of collateral damage, but I'm beginning to believe that's the only thing that's going to put an end to the fighting. When ma and the kids get it, pa has the chance real quick to understand it's Hamass' fault. Failing to make that connection may prove fatal.
