Afghanistan
NATO, Afghan Troops Kill Dozens of Militants in Afghanistan
Security officials in Afghanistan say NATO and Afghan forces have killed more than 40 insurgents in a joint air and ground operation in the south of the country.

The Afghan Defense Ministry Sunday said troops also seized a cache of weapons during the operation in Uruzgan province Saturday.

In northern Jowzjan province, authorities say militants killed at least five Afghans who were working to clear mines.

Elsewhere, the U.S.-led military coalition in Afghanistan said a roadside bomb killed two coalition soldiers in the southern province of Kandahar.

The coalition said the soldiers were conducting a security patrol with Afghan forces Saturday when their vehicle struck a mine planted on a busy road. Coalition officials did not release the soldiers' nationalities.

Afghan police, U.S. troops kill three Taliban
Afghan police backed by U.S. troops killed three Taliban fighters and captured three more in a 40-minute gun battle in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, a Reuters witness said. The fire fight erupted after some 40 Afghan police officers, backed by a small team of U.S. mentors entered a village in the Shajoy district of Zabul province. Taliban fighters fired on the troops before retreating to a nearby hill on motorcycles. The police and U.S. mentors chased the militants and surrounded them. At the end of the battle, three Taliban were killed and three were captured, one of them wounded.

Arabia
Al-Qaeda behind bombing near US mission in Yemen
Al-Qaeda was behind a bomb attack that struck a girls' school near the US embassy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa earlier this week, a report said on Saturday citing a security official.
When you say "bomb" and "girl's school" in the same sentence, the first thing I think of is "al-Qaeda." The U.S. embassy is just gravy.
The Al-Thawra newspaper said the official identified the suspect in Tuesday's attack as Hamza al-Dhayany, who he said was already wanted by the authorities in connection with previous attacks. "Dhayany launched rockets that were mounted on a car toward the school," said the official, whom the paper did not identify.
Now, when I go driving through the streets of Washington D.C. with in a car with rockets mounted on it, I always seem to get stopped.
Your tags were expired ...
A schoolgirl and a policeman were killed and 19 people wounded in the bombing which Washington said targeted the US embassy.
Dead schoolgirl, 19 innocent bystanders maimed, that sounds like al-Qaeda, too.

India-Pakistan
Srinagar: Four policemen, one millitant killed in gunbattle
Four security personnel and a self-styled divisional commander of Lashker-e-Toiba outfit were killed and three others injured in a fierce gunbattle near Srinagar on Sunday.

The gunbattle broke out when militants ambushed a joint search party of Special Operations group (SOG) of local police and CRPF at Telbal on Harwan-Hazratbal road on the outskirts of the city on Sunday morning, official sources said. They said three police personnel and a CRPF jawan were killed and two others including a sub-inspector were injured in the militant firing.

A militant, who was later identified as Faisal, a self-styled Divisional commander of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba (LET) outfit, was killed and his associate was injured. However, the injured militant managed to escape from the scene of the gunbattle and a hunt was on to nab him, the sources said.

The sources said that security forces launched a search operation in the locality situated on the banks of Dal Lake on Sunday morning following specific information about presence of militants. The militants ambushed the search party after finding themselves trapped, triggering the gunbattle, which lasted several hours.

Terming the killing of the dreaded LET commander as a major breakthrough, the sources said he was a member of the central command of the outfit and had masterminded a large number of attacks in the valley.

The area was still under tight security cordon along with adjoining areas, which were sealed later to block the escape routes of the trapped militants, the sources said.

The encounter comes just four days after militants set off a massive improvised explosive device at high security exhibition crossing in the heart of the city on March 19, which left one person dead and 17 others injured. The blast ended over six-months long lull in violence in the city. The encounter was also the first major gunbattle between militants and security forces this year.

3 FM stations shut down, 16 held in Swat
Security forces on Saturday held 16 men, including two commanders backing Taliban leader Fazlullah, and shut down three radio stations that had been airing Fazlullah’s speeches. Police said they had seized three FM transmitters, weapons, ammunition and cassettes of Fazlullah’s speeches.

An FM transmitter and several audiocassettes were seized from the house of pro-Fazlullah commander identified as Ashraf, in Bara Bandai area of Kabal tehsil. Another radio transmitter and weapons and ammunitions were seized in a raid on the house of Muhammad Ali Shah Nadar in the same area. Nine suspected militants were arrested in a search operation. Two AK-47 assault rifles, 12 pistols and 150 bullets were seized during the operation.

A suspected militant commander, Chamnay Khan, was held from Chaparyal area of Matta tehsil, and security forces held four suspects at the Landakay checkpost.

A victim of the February 29 Mingora bombing died in a hospital in Peshawar on Saturday. The death toll in the bombing has now reached 53. More than 1,200 suspected militants had been arrested during the operation in Swat, police officials said on Saturday. Presiding over a meeting of police officers, Malakand DIG Syed Akhtar Ali Shah said 100 of them were being questioned and the rest had been sent to jails, he said. Those found innocent during investigation had been released, he added.

#1  Just for the folks who were wondering...

A small FM transmitter of about 100 watts is about the size of your combination dvd/vcr player. And weighs about as much. Transmitting in the middle of the dial, around 98.1, the antenna--which would be 3-bay--would be mounted on a 30' section of water pipe. Using 3-10' sections of 2-1/2" pipe, you could screw it together and mount the antenna sections in about 15 minutes with three guys. Get a gain of about 1.5. Pulleys and ropes, given the mountains and trees, and you could easily cover an area with a radius of 40-50 miles, line of sight. Connect 100 feet of coax cable to your transmitter, and time spent rigging to completion? About 30 minutes. A good engineer could manufacture the antenna sections easily enough, so even if the antenna took a hit, with another couple of pieces of water pipe and some more cable and you're back in business.

Three checkposts attacked in Bajaur
Pro-Taliban militants attacked checkposts manned by Bajaur Scouts and Bajaur Levies late on Friday, official sources told Daily Times on Saturday. Heavy weapons were used from both sides when the security forces retaliated, they said. The checkposts are located in Rehmanabad, Sadiqabad and Shende Mor. “The crossfire lasted for an hour, but no loss of life was reported from either side,” a source said. “The security forces returned the fire using heavy weapons, including mortar guns,” a resident said. Three checkposts of Khasadar force and a girls’ school were bombed in Darra Adam Khel on Friday. No loss of life was reported. Sources said unidentified men had planted bombs at checkposts No 4 near Germany Kalay and checkposts No 7 and No 8 on Indus Highway. A bomb damaged the building of Pirwal Akhorwal Government Girls High School. The school was closed on Friday.

Curfew imposed in Hangu after four killed in sectarian clashes
A curfew has been imposed in Hangu district after clashes erupted between Shia and Sunni Muslims during a Nauroz procession on Friday, leaving four dead and 28 injured. Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

The violence erupted after members of the Shia community of the region came under fire as they hoisted a flag on a mosque to mark the Persian New Year festival of Nauroz. Locals said the Nauroz celebrations were going on peacefully at a madrassa when they were fired upon with rockets and mortar shells, APP reported. “We have clamped an indefinite curfew and summoned troops to restore peace. The situation is tense,” local police officer Akbar Ali told AFP after the incident. He said sporadic firing continued despite the curfew.

The district co-ordination officer of the region also called a jirga that successfully negotiated a truce between Sunnis and Shias of the area. The ceasefire is to last five months. Each sect has deposited Re 1 million with the jirga as a form of surety bond.

Iraq
Attacks kill 57 in Iraq; Green Zone hit
Rockets and mortars pounded Baghdad's U.S.-protected Green Zone Sunday and a suicide car bomber struck an Iraqi army post in the northern city of Mosul in a surge of attacks that killed at least 57 people nationwide.

The latest violence underscored the fragile security situation and the resilience of both Sunni and Shiite extremist groups as the war enters its sixth year and the U.S. death toll in the conflict approaches 4,000.

Attacks in Baghdad probably stemmed from rising tensions between rival Shiite groups — some of whom may have been behind the Green Zone blasts. It was the most sustained assault in months against the nerve center of the U.S. mission.

The deadliest attack of the day was in Mosul when a suicide driver slammed his vehicle through a security checkpoint in a hail of gunfire and detonated his explosives in front of an Iraqi headquarters building, killing 13 Iraqi soldiers and injuring 42 other people, police said.

Baghdad Green Zone hit by barrage of blasts
BAGHDAD - Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone was hit by a sustained barrage of rocket or mortar bomb fire early on Sunday and emergency sirens could be heard in the Iraqi capital’s government and diplomatic compound.

It was not immediately clear where the missiles landed or if there were any casualties after an apparent attack lasting about 15 minutes, Reuters witnesses said.

U.S. military says hits al Qaeda propaganda units
The U.S. military said on Saturday it had hampered al Qaeda's ability to recruit new members in Iraq by capturing or killing many of the people who make slick videos used to attract disaffected young Muslims. U.S. military spokesman Rear Admiral Greg Smith said that in the past year, 39 al Qaeda members in Iraq responsible for producing and disseminating videos and other material to thousands of Internet Web sites had been captured or killed. "The power of this information is obvious. These guys are using material that is used on Web sites to recruit and raise money," Smith told Reuters in an interview. "We think the vast majority of this media network has been degraded at this point," he said, adding that the arrests had led to fewer Internet postings of al Qaeda beheadings, kidnappings and other attacks in Iraq.

U.S. defence officials have in the past complained the military was losing the propaganda battle against militants who skilfully exploited communication tools like the Internet. Smith said there has been a steady decline in videos broadcast on 5,000 pro-al Qaeda Web sites since June 2007, roughly coinciding with falling levels of violence across Iraq. In February, U.S. intelligence monitoring of those Web sites showed 34 new postings of videos and audio material from Iraqi networks, down from 144 postings in June 2007, Smith said. "Those responsible for the more finished product, the stuff that really grabs the attention in mosques and elsewhere, we have those people on the run," he said.

The difference between these baboons and the “respectable” journalists of the media-industrial complex (the “MSM”)?

MSM types get a check, AQ pays in cash. Oh, and the AQ guys are more likely to be sober.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka bombs Tiger rebels after navy boat sunk
Sri Lankan air force jets bombed rebel Tamil Tiger ground positions on Saturday after a navy patrol boat was sunk by a suspected rebel mine off the northeast coast, with 10 of the 16 crew missing and feared dead.

Pro-Tamil sources said the Dvora fast attack boat was destroyed by a suicide squad of so-called black Tiger fighters, with three rebels killed in the sea clash.

But the military said the boat struck a mine during an early morning patrol by two navy craft in darkness near Nayaru area, around 300 kms (185 miles) north of the capital Colombo.

“We suspect it was an LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) sea mine,” navy spokesman Commander DKP Dassanayake told Reuters, saying the explosion happened around 2am. “The commander of the boat said it was raining and he heard an explosion, so we suspect it’s a sea mine explosion as there were no LTTE boats around that time and there wasn’t any confrontation,” Dassanayake said. The pro-Tiger website www.tamilnet.com said rebel suicide fighters destroyed the boat. “Elite Black Sea Tigers, engaged in a confrontation with a fleet of the Sri Lanka Navy in the seas off Mullaiththeevu, attacked and sunk a Dvora Fast Attack Craft,” the Web site said, citing Tiger sources in Vanni.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Ceasefire ends shootout in Ein el-Hellhole
Palestinian leaders intervened last night and ended the clash between the mainstream Fatah organization and Jund al-Sham Islamic militants. One was killed and four were wounded in the bloody clashes. All the reported victims belonged to Fatah according to security sources. Jund al-Sham did not report its casualties.

Fighting initially erupted Thursday when the mainstream Fatah organization arrested Hussam Maarouf, a member of Jund al-Sham, and handed him over to the Lebanese army on charges that he tried to kill Fatah officials at the camp , Palestinian officials at Ein el-Helweh have reported. Maarouf was also wanted by the Lebanese army on other crimes.

Jund al-Sham gunmen attacked Fatah offices in the camp with machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades, in response to the arrest of their comrade, security officials said. Fatah fighters hit back with their own volleys of RPGs and machine-gun fire. The echo of gunfire was heard as far as Sidon. Many Palestinian families fled to safer areas in nearby Sidon as the fighting escalated .

Jund al-Sham is an extremist Islamic militant group which is connected to Al Qaida . It has in the past clashed with the Lebanese army and other Palestinian groups including the mainstream Fatah organization. The group was blamed for several bombings in both Lebanon and Syria

Jund el Sham is a splinter of Usbat el Ansar , another extremist Palestinian Islamic militant group. Its name ( soldiers of al Sham ) is derived from the Syrian term of Bilad el Sham , which includes Jordan , Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine ( present day Israel) and Syria. It has Palestinian and Lebanese fighters .

Several fighters of Fatah al Islam ( not related to mainstream Fatah organization) came from Jund al-Sham. Last year Fatah al Islam fought the Lebanese army for 106 days in the Nahr el bared Palestinian refugee camp. At the end of the battle the Lebanese army declared victory . Fatah al Islam was disbanded and its leader had reportedly fled to Syria where he came from .

With a population of 70,000 , Ein el-Hilweh, , is the largest of Lebanon's 12 Palestinian refugee camps. A number of fugitives live in the camp, which is under Palestinian jurisdiction . Under an agreement called Cairo accord the refugee camps are off limits to the Lebanese authorities. This camp has seen a lot of fighting and is considered the most dangerous in Lebanon.
