Battle leaves 4 Taliban dead in Zabul
(Xinhua) -- Four Taliban insurgents were killed as in clash with Afghan police in Afghanistan's southern Zabul province Saturday, a local police official said Sunday. "The clash took place in Shahjoi district on Saturday, in which four rebels were killed and three others made captive," a police officer Faridullah Khan told Xinhua.

In the meantime, Taliban purported spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi denied the casualties, saying two policemen were killed in the firefight which lasted for few hours. Conflicts and Taliban-related violence have left more than 220 people dead so far this year in the war-torn central Asian country, where anti-government militants have vowed to intensify their guerrilla-style attacks.

Joint NATO Afghan operation kills dozens of Taliban
The Afghan defence ministry says dozens of Taliban insurgents were killed or wounded during a joint NATO-Afghan army operation in the southern province of Uruzgan on Saturday. The defence ministry did not give an exact death toll but unconfirmed reports say more than 40 insurgents were killed. There were no injuries or deaths among NATO or Afghan forces during the clash near the town of Deh Rawod. The Afghan authorities say one of the dead is a well-known local commander. A significant amount of heavy weaponry, including rocket launchers and machine guns, was also seized during the operation.

More on the Girls School Attack Near US Yemen Embassy
Target really was the girls school, not mortars that missed the US embassy.
Meanwhile, down in Yemen, a girls school was attacked. Three mortar shells were fired at it, and men on motorcycles threw three grenades into the courtyard of the school. This wounded 17 of the students. Previously, Islamic conservatives, believed to be al Qaeda, had attacked the principal of the school. Islamic conservatives consider education of women, which is often funded by foreign charities, un-Islamic and against the law of God.

Kurdish man dies in fresh clashes
Fresh clashes between Turkish police and Kurdish protesters in the southeastern city of Yuksekova have left a Kurdish man dead. Another man died in the province of Van from injuries he sustained during riots on Saturday. Coinciding with the Kurdish New Year, many Kurds have been taking to the streets in a show of support for the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). During clashes with police on Saturday dozens were injured and some 130 arrested.

Police in Islamabad arrests over 75 suspects after reports of suicide boom plot
(KUNA) -- Police here launched an operation and arrested over 75 suspects after intelligence reports that possible suicide bombers have entered in the heavily-guarded capital. Syed Kalim Imam, Senior Superintendent Police (SSP), while talking to media said that security has been given a red alert and an operation has been launched to arrest eight teenaged suicide bombers. He added that so far more than 75 suspects have been arrested and that the operation was still underway. The reports came as the nation celebrated Pakistan's 68th National Day on Sunday.

Pakistan has been recently hit by a series of suicide attacks. Four suicide explosions in eastern Lahore city last month killed over three dozen persons and wounded more than a hundred others. All suicide attacks were aimed at security forces installations, one targeting a Naval War college and another targeted a building of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Also, a bomb blast last week in an Italian restaurant in Islamabad killed a Turkish woman and wounded over 10 others, including a British diplomat and five US citizens.

Tankers loaded with oil for US troops catch fire, over 40 wounded
(KUNA) -- An explosion in an oil tanker carrying fuel for US forces in the neighboring Afghanistan put nearby parked 25 tankers on fire that wounded over 40 persons on Sunday in a Pakistani bordering town, said officials. About 25 tankers were parked near Pak-Afghan border in Landi Kotal town of Khyber tribal agency, an official at political administration told KUNA. An explosion ripped through a tanker, putting it on fire which spread to 25 nearby parked tankers, said the official. He said there was stampede that wounded over 40 persons.

The official said an emergency has been declared in the hospitals and efforts were underway to extinguish the blaze. It was not immediately clear what caused explosion in the first tanker and who was behind the incident. The official suspected local Taliban militants who had been targeting tankers carrying oil for US troops in the past.

Iraq
BBC: Iran 'behind Green Zone attack'
The most senior US general in Iraq has said he has evidence that Iran was behind Sunday's bombardment of Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone.

Gen David Petraeus told the BBC he thought Tehran had trained, equipped and funded insurgents who fired the barrage of mortars and rockets.

He said Iran was adding what he described as "lethal accelerants" to a very combustible mix.

There has as yet been no response from Iran to the accusations.

In response to the news that 4,000 US military personnel have now been killed in Iraq, he said it showed how much the mission had cost but added that Americans were realistic about it.

He also said a great deal of progress had been made because of the "flipping" of communities - the decision by Sunni tribes to turn against al-Qaeda militants.

The extent of this had surprised even the US military, he said.

'Promises violated'

In an interview with BBC world affairs editor John Simpson, Gen Petraeus said violence in Iraq was being perpetuated by Iran's Quds Force, a branch of the Revolutionary Guards.

"The rockets that were launched at the Green Zone yesterday, for example... were Iranian-provided, Iranian-made rockets," he said, adding that the groups that fired them were funded and trained by the Quds Force.

"All of this in complete violation of promises made by President Ahmadinejad and the other most senior Iranian leaders to their Iraqi counterparts."

The barrage hit the Green Zone on Sunday morning. Some rockets missed their targets killing 15 Iraqi civilians.

Later in the day four US soldiers died when their patrol vehicle was blown up by a bomb in southern Baghdad, putting the total number of US fatalities above 4,000.

This and other bloodshed on Sunday came despite an overall reduction in violence since last June, when the US deployed an extra 30,000 troops for the surge.

Days earlier, Mr Bush marked the fifth anniversary of the invasion, saying that it had made the world a better place.

#1  Correct me if I'm wrong, but seems to me Gen Petraeus is very confident he has evidence in hand (and has had) of Iran's attack on the Green Zone.

This ain't a court of law. Don't need proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

Mr. Bush, please...get off your ass and order Gen Petraeus to hit back. Untie his hands. Give him carte blanche to do whatever he wants to do to send a message of retribution. Launch on these f**ks.

Michael Totten: The Liberation of Karmah
Go read the whole thing. Some excerpts:

“This was IED Alley, right here,” Lieutenant Macak said as we arrived. “But not any more because of the efforts of coalition forces, the Iraqi Police, the Provincial Security Forces, the Iraqi Civilian Watch, and the sheikhs. For two or three years now we've been saying them, hey, if you're tired of Al Qaeda, stand up and get rid of them. And they're actually doing that now. The Iraqi Police now call IED Alley their Victory Circle. It's a physical representation of what they have accomplished.”

Hundreds of chairs were set up in front of a stage that had been erected on the circle itself. Local sheikhs, city officials, and business leaders sat beneath an awning in case of rain. They drank water poured into tall glasses from bottles. Regular citizens and mid-level leaders sat in plastic chairs exposed to the elements, but there was no rain.

The community leaders dressed sharply, some in traditional Arab dress and others with Western coats and ties. Iraqi Police officers, Iraqi Army soldiers, and plainclothes Neighborhood Watch guys milled about. All carried AK-47s and pistols. Brand new Iraqi flags snapped in the wind.

A live band took the stage and belted out powerful Iraqi folk music indigenous to the province. A group of armed Iraqi men danced to the music in a circle. Some brandished rifles and knives. The passion and intensity of the music was startling.

Twenty or so minutes later, Sheikh Mishan stood at the podium and addressed the people of Karmah in poetic, perfectly pronounced, thunderous Arabic. His speech celebrating the end of the insurgency and the awakening of the city of Karmah would knock you back on your heels even if you could not understand one single word. The man was an obvious leader, and he packed a punch. . . .

There's also this charming little vignette:

Sabah Danou walked with Commander Summers and Admiral Driscoll. He’s an Iraqi who works for the multinational forces as a cultural and political advisor in Baghdad. “Look,” he said to me and gestured toward a local man with a long beard and a short dishdasha that left his ankles exposed. “He’s a Wahhabi,” Danou hissed. “He is linked to Al Qaeda. That’s their uniform, you know, that beard and that high-cut dishdasha. God, what pieces of shit those fuckers are.”

I never hear soldiers and Marines talk about Iraqis like that, but no one objected to what Sabah Danou said.

4,000 "Grim Milestone"
A roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers in Baghdad on Sunday, the military said, pushing the overall American death toll in the five-year war to at least 4,000. The grim milestone came on a day when at least 61 people were killed across the country. The soldiers with Multi-National Division — Baghdad were on a patrol when their vehicle was struck at about 10 p.m. in southern Baghdad, the military said. Another soldier was wounded in the attack — less than a week after the fifth anniversary of the conflict.

The deadliest attack of the day was in Mosul when a suicide driver slammed his vehicle through a security checkpoint in a hail of gunfire and detonated his explosives in front of an Iraqi headquarters building, killing 13 Iraqi soldiers and injuring 42 other people, police said. Iraqi guards opened fire on the vehicle but couldn't stop it because the windshield had been bulletproofed, said an Iraqi army officer. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not supposed to release the information.

Last year, the U.S. military deaths spiked as U.S. troops sought to regain control of Baghdad and surrounding areas. The death toll has seesawed since, with 2007 ending as the deadliest year for American troops at 901 deaths. That was 51 more deaths than 2004, the second deadliest year for U.S. soldiers. The 4,000 figure is according to an Associated Press count that includes eight civilians who worked for the Department of Defense.

#1  While I hate seeing my fellow Americans in arms being hurt and killed, the casualty rate for this war, especially for the combat levels is unbelievably low. Our troops and leaders and weapons designers deserve the credit for this historical feat.

And the only "Grim Milestone" here is 5 fucking years of MSM lies, backstabbing and attempts to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

#6  I wonder what the 4,000 number would be today if Iran had faced a U.S. government united behind the troops and truly determined to terminate the flow of Iranian support to the insurgency. There are 4,000 dead but there are also many more who are seriously wounded -- and we are still letting Iran go relatively unexposed and unpunished. We didn't learn in 1979 and we're not learning now.

US military kills 17 armed men, arrests 30 others in various parts of Iraq
(KUNA) -- US coalition forces killed 17 terrorists and detained 30 suspected ones during operations targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq's central and northern parts on Saturday and today, a US military statement said on Sunday.

Coalition forces conducted an operation Saturday near the Hamrin Mountains, targeting weapons facilitators and associates of AQI leadership, the statement added. Intelligence reports led the assault force to the targeted suspect's location, where five individuals failed to comply with Coalition forces' instructions or heed warnings, the statement said. Perceiving hostile intent, Coalition forces engaged the armed men with small arms fire, killing them, the statement added. The statement explained, secondary explosions from a vehicle following the initial engagement indicated explosives or weapons were inside.

Meanwhile, coalition forces killed 12 terrorists today during an operation east of Baqouba, targeting members of a suicide bombing network. The ground force was attacked with small arms fire as they approached the target building, the statement said. Responding to the hostile threat, Coalition forces engaged five armed men, killing them, the statement added. The ground force ordered the occupants to come out of the building. Some complied, but others remained inside. Coalition forces entered the building and were fired upon by several armed men. Seven more terrorists were killed in the engagement. Assault weapons, ammunition, grenades and military-style assault vests discovered on site were safely destroyed. Six of the terrorists killed had shaved their bodies, which is consistent with final preparation for suicide operations.

Coalition forces continued to target the terrorist bombing network in southwest Baghdad this morning, capturing a suspected bombing facilitator, who allegedly specializes in the distribution of homemade explosives, the statement said. After he identified himself as the targeted suspect, the man led Coalition forces to four other wanted individuals, who were also detained, the statement added.

In the city of Mosul, coalition forces conducted a precision operation in which they captured an alleged terrorist leader suspected of carrying out attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces. In a nearby operation, the ground force detained three suspected terrorists while targeting associates of AQI senior leaders. Coalition forces captured an alleged associate of AQI senior leaders and three other suspected terrorists this morning in Tikrit. On two occasions during the operation, vehicles sped toward the security perimeter.

47 killed in Iraq bloodshed
A wave of attacks across Iraq on Sunday killed 47 people, while insurgents fired a barrage of mortars at Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, sending US embassy staff scurrying into bunkers.
The deadliest attack was in the main northern city of Mosul where a suicide bomber crashed an explosives-laden truck into an Iraqi army base, triggering a blast that killed 10 soldiers and wounded 30 other people, mostly soldiers, army officer Major Mohammed Ahmed told AFP. "The bomber smashed the truck through barriers at the entrance to the base and triggered the explosion" at around 7:00 am (0400 GMT), said Ahmed.

Iraqi and US troops are engaged in a major offensive against Al-Qaeda in Mosul, which according to US commanders is the jihadists' last urban stronghold in Iraq.

In a brutal attack in the south of Baghdad, armed men travelling in three cars opened fire on crowds in a local market in the mixed Zafaraniyah neighbourhood, killing seven people and wounding 16, security and medical officials said.

In another attack in the Iraqi capital, a Katyusha rocket struck a residential building in largely Shiite eastern Al-Kamaliyah neighbourhood, killing at least five people and wounding eight, security officials said.

A car bomb near a bus stop in Baghdad's Shiite Al-Shuala neighbourhood killed five people and wounded eight others, security officials said.

Further north, a roadside bomb near the town of Al-Tuz, 75 kilometres (50 miles) south of Kirkuk, killed four Iraqi army personnel, a medic said.

Elsewhere in Iraq, four people, including a police officer, were killed in shootings, police said.

The violence on Sunday began with a barrage of mortar fire against Baghdad's Green Zone, the seat of the Iraqi government and the US embassy. Two waves of mortar rounds struck the area between 6:30 am (0330 GMT) and 10:30 am. They caused no casualties but sent panicked US embassy staff scurrying into bunkers, officials and witnesses said.

Black smoke was seen rising from the Green Zone and US attack helicopters were seen circling above the sprawling complex, which once served as Saddam Hussein's presidential compound.

An employee in the Green Zone, Mohammed al-Dulaimi, who witnessed the second attack, said eight mortar rounds fell near the US embassy complex and two a little distance away in a residential area. "They caused slight damage and one sparked a fire," Dulaimi told AFP.

An embassy employee, who would not be named, said staff dashed for the embassy's bunker after both attacks.

Insurgents and militiamen regularly fire mortars or rockets at the Green Zone, one of the most secure areas in Baghdad, although the frequency has diminished with a general improvement in security across the country. The US military claims that most mortar rounds or rockets that hit the area are manufactured in Iran and fired by "rogue" elements of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia.

Meanwhile, Major General Douglas Stone, in charge of detainees in US prisons in Iraq, said more detainees are being released daily than being arrested. He said this was a reversal of the situation from April last year when a "surge" in US troop numbers saw a dramatic increase in the number of people being detained in connection with alleged insurgency operations. The total number of detainees in two US prisons -- Camp Cropper and Camp Bucca -- has decreased from just under 26,000 in April to around 23,000 now, said Stone. "The release rate has overtaken the intake rate as of February," he told reporters on Sunday.

U.S. military: Troops kill shaved would-be suicide bombers
U.S. troops raided a suspected suicide bomber cell Sunday, killing a dozen militants, half of whom had shaved their bodies -- which the U.S. military says indicates they were in the final stage of preparation for a suicide attack. Troops came under fire while approaching a building in the volatile Diyala province, military spokesman Maj. Winfield Danielson said in an e-mail.

The troops returned fire, killing five men, before demanding that the remaining occupants exit the building. Some complied; others remained in the building, Danielson said. The militants inside opened fire when U.S. troops stormed the building. Seven more militants were killed in the gunfight, Danielson said. "Six of the terrorists killed had shaved their bodies, which is consistent with final preparation for suicide operations," he said.

Inside, troops found assault weapons, ammunition, grenades and vests like the ones suicide bombers use to conceal explosives. Diyala province stretches north and east of Baghdad and has been a major front for U.S. troops fighting militants.

Iraqi security sources told KUNA that the American planes shelled Al-Qaeda hideouts in the village of Baladros, southeast of Baqouba, Diyala's largest city, killing 15 members of Al-Qaeda. Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Would-be Azrieli bomber gets 9 years
The Tel Aviv District Court sentenced Taibe resident, Dubian Nazirat, 30, to nine years in jail after he was charged with conspiring to assist the enemy during wartime.

Nazirat was a member of the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigade cell that planned to carry out a terror attack on an Israel Railways train as well as at the Azrieli towers in Tel Aviv in 2004. The men intended to plant an explosive device on railroad tracks near Netanya before detonate it with a cellular phone. The attack was thwarted a day before its planned execution.

Two more Taibe residents, Mujhad Dukan, 22, and Amin Ziwati, 23, had been charged earlier with conspiring to assist the enemy during wartime. Dukan is also charged with contacting a foreign agent.

One of the cell's members received 15 years in jail while another was sentenced to seven years. The group's leader, Ahmed Kaisy, was sentenced to 4.5 years by a military court.

The prosecution argued that Netzrat's sentence should be harsher in light of his Israeli citizenship. According to the indictment, Dukan, whose family received Israeli citizenship in 2000 and moved from the Balata refugee camp near Nablus to Taibe, maintained contact with Al-Aksa Brigades fugitives from his hometown.

Several months before the arrests, during a visit to Balata, Dukan was approached by a known fugitive and asked to help smuggle a bomb into Israel. Dukan was then contacted by Kaisy and asked to place a bomb on a train car.

Dukan allegedly told Kaisy that he was afraid he would not be able to leave the train before the explosion and therefore suggested, and Kaisy agreed, to place the bomb instead on the train tracks.

Following the meeting with Kaisy, Dukan met with the two other defendants and recruited them to participate in the attack. Dukan was informed on October 5 that the bombs were ready to be picked up in Balata, but he was arrested before he could obtain the bombs and the attack was thwarted.

Israeli Army arrests six Palestinian youth near Nablus
(KUNA) -- The Israeli Army arrested six Palestinian youth in the village of Beta, close to Nablus, on Sunday. Witnesses told KUNA that Israeli soldiers stormed the village and searched its houses before arresting six youth of no more than 16 years of age, taking them to an undisclosed location. The Israeli forces had closed off the village on Friday after an Israeli passenger bus had come under fire originating from the village. The Jewish state is tightening its siege on Palestinian towns and villages as part of its elevated state of alert coinciding with the celebration of the festival of Purim.

Singapore detains another JI member
(Xinhua) -- Singapore has detained another Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) member for his involvement in the terrorist group, The Ministry of Home Affairs said on Sunday. The ministry said that the internal security act's order against Rijal Yadri Jumari, who was arrested in February this year, was issued three days ago.

Rijal Yadri Jumari, 27, is a member of JI's "Al-Ghuraba" cell which aims to develop young members to become trained operatives and future leaders, said the ministry. Rijal Yadri Jumari went to Afghanistan in 2000 and was trained at Al-Qaeda's Camp Farouq in Kandahar where he learnt how to handle weapons, explosives, surveillance and guerrilla warfare, according to Channel News Asia reports.

JI is a Southeast Asia-based terrorist organization. Singapore has detained over 30 JI members for the past years. But the leader of the Singapore terrorist JI network, Mas Selamat Kastari, escaped from the country's Whitley road detention center later February this year, and a massive manhunt involving the police and armed soldiers has since been underway to track down the escaped detainee.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
10,000 Syrian troops deploy in Kurdish region
The Syrian army has moved some 10,000 soldiers into five cities in the country's northern, Kurdish-dominated region, following violence over the weekend, which left three people dead. The killing occurred during celebration of the Kurdish New Year - Nowruz - in the city Qameshli close to the border with Turkey, according to several local news sources.

Some 10 percent of the Syrian population is Kurdish but, despite this, they lack any political influence and the Kurdish language and flag are both banned. Following a population census in 1962, the Syrian government stripped some 20% of the Kurds of their citizenship in an effort to Arabize the population, claiming that many of the local Kurds had infiltrated the country from neighboring Turkey and Iraq.

The effect of the census left the Kurds, who had lost their citizenship, stateless, despite the fact that many of them fulfilled the demands set out by the Syrian government such as being born in Syria. Residing in Syria also meant many lacked the possibility of gaining citizenship in another country. The Arabization policy was part of a larger movement that swept the Middle East during the 1960s and '70s that promoted regional cooperation based on a common cultural heritage.

Disturbances were also reported from Turkey, where police and Turkish Kurds clashed in several cities in the countries eastern, Kurdish-dominated region. Melees also took place between police and local Kurds in Mersin and Izmir, in western Turkey.

Syria masses three army divisions on Lebanese border
DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the Syrian deployment is backed by the concentration of pro-Syrian Palestinian factions in the Beqaa valley of Lebanon, amid rising war tensions between Hizballah and Israel.

Hassan Nasrallah declared Hizballah would wage “open war” with Israel at the end of the 40-day mourning period the group observed for Imad Mughniyeh who was killed in Damascus February 12. His deputy has maintained that Hizballah had “100 percent solid evidence" that Israel had killed Mughniyeh, which Israel has consistently denied.

Monday, March 24, Nasrallah will address a big memorial rally in South Beirut. The Israeli army is on high alert for a possible Hizballah attack from Lebanon. The Magen David Adom ambulance service is on emergency standby across the country.

Terror Networks
Ayman Urges Attacks on Israel, US
Al-Qaida deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri called on Muslims in a new audiotape released Monday to strike Jewish and American targets in revenge for Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip earlier this month.
The al-Zawahri tape came on the heels of a message from Osama bin Laden, who called for a holy war to liberate the Palestinian territories—a new push by the terror network's leadership to use widespread anger over the Gaza violence to whip up support.

The authenticity of the 4 minute, 44-second audiotape could not be independently confirmed. But the voice on it resembled that of al- Zawahri on previous audio and videotapes confirmed to be his. It was posted on an Islamic militant Web site where al-Qaida usually releases its statements, and a banner advertising the tape had the logo of al- Qaida's media arm, Al-Sahab.

"Muslims, today is your day. Strike the interests of the Jews, the Americans, and all those who participated in the attack on Muslims," al-Zawahri said. "Monitor the targets, collect money, prepare the equipment, plan with precision, and then—while relying on God—assault, seeking martyrdom and paradise."

Israel launched a weeklong offensive in Gaza that ended in early March, seeking to put down Palestinian militants firing rockets against nearby Israeli towns. The Israeli assault killed more than 120 people, including many civilians.

Al-Zawahri said attacks should not be limited to places in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

"Today there is no room for he who says that we should only fight the Jews in Palestine," he said. "Let us strike their interests everywhere, just like they gathered against us from everywhere."

"Let them know that they will get blood for every dollar they spend in the killing of the Muslims, and for every bullet they fire at us, a volcano will turn back on them," he said, referring to American military aid and other ties to Israel. "They cannot expect to support Israel, then live in peace while the Jews are killing our fugitive and besieged people."

AL-Zawahri referred to the publishing of a cartoon seen as insulting Islam's Prophet Muhammad in Danish papers. The cartoons, which were first printed in 2006 and reprinted last month, angered many Muslims.

"They will never be able to insult and make a mockery out of our Prophet, peace and prayers of Allah upon him," al-Zawahri said.

Al-Zawahri accused Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak of colluding with Israel in the siege of Gaza. Egypt has sealed its border with the Gaza Strip since the Palestinian militant group Hamas took over the territory last year.

He said Mubarak "repeats the same dirty role" as the Lebanese Phalangists—a Christian militia that was allied with Israel in Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war and was blamed in the massacre of Palestinian refugees in the Beirut camps of Sabra and Shatila. "The roles are the same, even if the faces change—the same betrayal even if the names have changed," said al-Zawahri.
