Afghanistan
2 Taliban bitten by US coalition dogs
FILTHY INFIDEL BEASTS!
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- U.S. coalition dogs bit two fleeing suspected Taliban militants during an operation in eastern Afghanistan in which a total of eight insurgents were detained, the coalition said Friday. The raid Thursday in the Muslim country's Paktika province targeted a Taliban sub-commander wanted for kidnapping, killing Afghan soldiers and involvement in roadside attacks, it said. During the operation, "two militants attempted to flee and were pursued by coalition military working dogs," the coalition said in a statement.
Ripper! Killer! Fetch!
"Both militants received dog-bite injuries, one of which required treatment on scene by coalition medical personnel."
Good dog...
1st Lt. Nathan Perry, a coalition spokesman, would not say what kind of dogs were used in the raid, but said the troops will "use dogs when we need to." Perry did not know if the targeted Taliban sub-commander was among those detained and the statement did not specify.
Human Rights Watch will hear of this! I'll bet they weren't even wearing Islamobooties!
In Islamic tradition, dogs are shunned as unclean and dangerous.
Tell em that, since they've been bitten by dogs, now they're going to hell.

#12  I raised pigs as a 4H project when I was in high school. I had a brood-sow that weighed in at about 450 pounds. She would do any trick a dog would, plus a few. I could get her to "attack" a scarecrow. I taught her to go to one area, specifically. NOBODY messed with me on my family's property. Usually, just the sight of seven feet of porker charging with a 10-inch mouth open was enough in itself. The military is really missing a bet, especially with the muslim avoidance of all things pork.

Africa North
Algeria: Internal conflict stalls release of Austrian tourists
(AKI) - Internal conflict within the militant organisation, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, has reportedly slowed negotiations with Austrian authorities for the release of two hostages kidnapped in February.

Andrea Kloiber, 43, and Wolfgang Ebner, 51, went missing while on holiday in Tunisia and the Algerian-based Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb then claimed to have kidnapped them. According to a report in the Algerian daily, Ech-Chourouk, negotiations are continuing between the militants and Vienna for the release of the couple believed to be held in the Sahara region, near the border of Algeria, Mali and Nigeria.

The terrorists are reported to have softened their stance in seeking a ransom in exchange for their release and Austria has reportedly accepted in principle the payment of a ransom in the order of five million euros. However, negotiations have stalled because of confusion generated by the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in the Algerian mountains, Abdel Malik Droukedel, who is apparently seeking a political victory.

Yahya Jawadi, also called Abu Omar, is the leader of the Tareq Bin Ziyad Brigade which also operates in the Algerian Sahara, is unlikely to agree to the deal.

Since the kidnapping, this group has been forced to cease its terrorist activities in the area due to lack of funds and is seeking a ransom in order to relaunch their role in the region. Earlier this year, Libya had agreed to act as an intermediary to help finalise the deal, using its influence with a local Tuareg tribe known as El Barabich, security officials told the media.

Europe
Sweden: Major weapons seizure in Stockholm - RPGs, explosives, etc.
Six youts young men have been detained in custody charged with serious weapons crime after police seized large quantity of weapons and explosives outside Stockholm.
And how many are named 'Sven'?
The haul, found in a cellar in SpĂĄnga and an apartment in Sundbyberg, included grenades, antitank grenade launchers, automatic weapons, pistols and explosives.
"Ja, sure! We båne göt the hårdwåre, by gölly!"
The swoop took place in July and the suspects were arrested between end of July and August. The weapons are both military and civilian, some of which have been stolen in Sweden, others from the former Yugoslavia.

Ulf Göranzon, a press spokesman at Stockholm police, described the weapons as being "generally very heavy". Speaking to the TT news agency, Göranzon said it was "worrying that it is so easy to procure weapons from that part of Europe. There are plenty of weapons in those countries."

Prosecutor Henrik Söderman is also concerned by the extent of the weapons seizure. He has requested a fresh hearing on the detention issue on Friday. "Of course one is a bit jumpy," Sšderman told TT. "We are talking about weapons such as antitank grenade launchers and and explosives".
Somehow I'm guessing these weapons weren't destined for the Georgian Widows Ammunition Fund ...
Sšderman could not comment on whether the weapons were meant to be sold or used in robberies.

The six suspects are all aged between 22 and 27 and are already known to the police. A few of them are suspected of serious weapon crimes, and one is suspected of smuggling. All the men are from the Spånga and Järfälla suburbs in northwest Stockholm.

#11  In Sweden, this could be bikers, those are big in North Europe (and there even are some in the UK or in France), all the major US outlaw bikers clubs/gangs are present, and they do smuggle guns, this is one of their income-making hobbies. IIRC, in the 90's, they used to blow each other's nightclubs and do drive-by shooting up of usually fortified) home of rivals, only with machine-guns and Rpgs, whihc is kinda cool, from a detached and totally uninvolved obsever point of view.

Funny part IIRC, is that they don't do much biking, too cold a large part of the year.

Of course, could be turbans with weapons from kosovo or bosnia, too.
Posted by: anonymous5089 || 08/15/2008 13:47 Comments || Top||

#12  A5089

I agree, they could be bikers or biker-affiliated, and I gave that some thought - the Bandido-Hell's Angels confrontations have a legendary history, involving all of the tools you've mentioned.

The Swedish press, though, is usually pretty quick to point out a biker connection. From what I've read, the weapons are usually found in the organization's local hq or in a remote farmhouse owned by a member. Storage in urban cellars and apartments don't seem to be the bikers' style.

"Young men", and the mention of immigrant-heavy suburbs, are oft-used code words for individuals with Muslim backgrounds. Sort of the way the French media mention the arrondissement(s)(sp?) when a major carbecue takes place.

Holland extradites Pakistani to Spain
Dutch authorities on Thursday extradited a Pakistani man to Spain suspected of belonging to a group planning suicide attacks in Barcelona and elsewhere in Europe, said the Spanish Interior Ministry.

Aqueelur Rehman Abbasi, 26, fled Spain in January. Dutch police arrested him in June after a Madrid court issued a warrant for his capture.

Spain's anti-terror court on June 5 charged Abbasi and 10 other South Asians, most of them Pakistanis, with belonging to a terrorist group. The other 10 had been arrested in Barcelona, northeastern Spain, in January in a series of raids during which police also recovered bomb-making equipment.

Dutch judicial authorities approved his extradition last week, and he was transferred to Spain on Thursday, said Spain's Interior Ministry. The cell is suspected of planning suicide bombings in the Barcelona metro and other European cities. After the arrests, Spain's intelligence services had warned Paris, London and Lisbon of the threat of terrorist attacks linked to a European tour by President Pervez Musharraf.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said in February that the cell was linked to Pakistani Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud. Spanish authorities have stepped up operations against extremists since the March 11, 2004 Al Qaeda-inspired train bombings in Madrid that killed 191 people and wounded 1,800 in the country's worst terror attack.

India-Pakistan
Official: 460 militants, 22 troops die in Pakistan
Pakistan's top civilian security official vowed Friday to "wipe out" Islamic militants in a volatile tribal region where the government says more than 460 insurgents and 22 troops have died in 10 days of fighting.

Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik said Pakistani intelligence have reports that about 3,000 armed militants are present in the northwestern region of Bajur, which borders Afghanistan. He said they included Pakistanis, Afghan Taliban and Central Asians.

"We will wipe them out," Malik told a news conference in Peshawar. "We will not surrender before them."

Pakistani army helicopter gunships and jets have been pounding militant positions in Bajur since the fighting broke out Aug. 6 when scores of insurgents attacked a military outpost. The region is regarded as a stronghold for Taliban and al-Qaida.

The insurgent attack followed a Taliban threat to retaliate against the government for launching military operations in other frontier regions where it has earlier sought to use dialogue to reach peace with militants — a controversial policy that appears in danger of collapse.

Alongside Malik at a news conference, provincial Gov. Owais Ahmed Ghani said some 219,000 residents have been displaced by the fighting in Bajur and promised to provide them food and shelter.

Ghani gave the details of the latest toll from the fighting. With some 480 killed, it is one of the bloodiest episodes since Pakistan first deployed its troops along its volatile border with Afghanistan in support of the U.S.-led war on terror nearly seven years ago.

It has not been possible to independently confirm the casualty figures, which are more than double the number given by the army in recent days. Insecurity and the remoteness of the region prevent journalists from covering the fighting. Also telecommunications in Bajur are poor.

On Thursday, nine men died when troops backed by helicopter gunships destroyed their two vehicles near Khar, the region's main town, said Mohammed Khan, a local government official.

Malik said he could not confirm reports that the local Taliban chief, Maulvi Faqir Mohammed, was among the dead. Mohammed is believed to be an associate of al-Qaida No. 2 leader Ayman al-Zawahri.

Pakistan has faced a blizzard of criticism that its policy of negotiation with militants has allowed more freedom for Taliban and al-Qaida-linked fighters to operate and launch attacks on U.S. and NATO forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

Malik, however, claimed that the militants were receiving rocket launchers, missiles and other munitions from across the border.

"We have evidence to prove what we are saying," he said, without elaborating on who was supplying them.

#1  An interesting solution might be found with some electronic hanky-panky. For example, imagine a missile fired from a Pakistani helicopter that suddenly "goes off course", yet hits a target the pilot wasn't aware of.

This actually simplifies things. For example, the pilot is told to fly on a particular course. Then he is told to fire a missile to the North. And like by magic, the missile seems to know where to go.

And the pilot doesn't complain, because he gets the credit for the hit.

But it being fired from a Pakistani army helicopter solves any injury to Pakistani sensibilities. It's not like it was fired by the Americans.

Pakistan troops fire again across Line of Control
As India celebrated its Independence Day, Pakistani troops fired mortars and rockets at Indian Army and Border Security Force (BSF) positions at two places in forward areas of Jammu region on Friday, marking yet another ceasefire violation.

The two incidents took place within an hour of each other along the international border at R S Pura in Jammu sector and the Line of Control at Mandi in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir, according to Army sources in New Delhi.

With the two incidents being reported, the number of violations of the November 2003 ceasefire agreement with India by Pakistan Army since January this year has reached 24.

Posted by: Abdominal Snowman 2008-08-15 11:42

Well, if they took it all the way to the Indus River (from which India derives its name), then the US could "help" the Afghanis take the west bank, and a freight route wouldn't be a problem. Of course, it'd be pretty rough on Pakistan, but I can't think of a more deserving bunch.

#8  The regions of Kashmir under Pak control (Azad Kashmir and the Northern Areas) directly adjoin Afghanistan.

So India would only have to control what is already claims as its territory (the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir - minus the part grabbed by China). It would extend road and rail links all the way to Kabul. An air corridor from Indian airbases would also be secure.

Pakistan proper, would be untouched.

Gunships Blast Pakistani Madrassa; Faqir Mohammad rumored titzup
And other positive news from Tribal Pakistan.

Thirty two Taliban fighters have been reported killed during the latest round of fighting in the extremist-controlled Pakistani tribal agency of Bajaur. The Pakistani military speculated that Faqir Mohammed, the Taliban emir, or leader in Bajaur and the deputy leader of the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, was killed in the fighting.

Faqir is thought to have been killed or wounded while riding in a convoy that was transporting explosives near the town of Khar. Pakistani Army Cobra helicopter gunships targeted the convoy and killed between 10 and 12 Taliban fighters. The Pakistani military could not confirm his death, while Taliban spokesman Maulvi Omar denied Faqir was killed.

Twenty-two Taliban were reported killed in a separate attack after helicopter gunships struck a madrassa run by Mullah Munir. The Pakistani military appears to be relying on air and artillery strikes to target the Taliban after a large convoy of Frontier Corps paramilitaries were ambushed and routed earlier this week.

Taliban collecting taxes to raise funds for 'jihad'
The Taliban are financing their "jihad" against the United States and supporting the families of the militants killed in the war with private taxation, besides Zakat and Ushr.

Sources close to militants, tribal elders and government officials in various tribal regions where Taliban-linked militancy has paralysed business told Daily Times that the organisation has not made a uniform policy on Zakat so far.

Taliban vary the taxation from area to area and depending on the financial status of traders. Bajaur is the worst case, where reports say the Taliban have imposed fixed taxes on traders, ranging from Rs 30 to Rs 25,000 per month.

"I pay Rs 500 a month to the Taliban as per their decree," said Rustam Khan, who runs a small business in the Khar bazaar. "I can afford to pay the sum, otherwise it would have been great injustice."

Maulana Waheed, in charge of Zakat for Taliban in Bajaur, said the total collection was around Rs 175,000 so far -- much lower than what Taliban need to spend. Waheed denied the Taliban were forcing Khar residents to pay Zakat to them, but accepted collecting 12,000 kilogrammes of wheat as Ushr from farmers.

Fuel stations give 120 litres of fuel each to the Taliban, who are frequently on the move to avoid United States spy planes.

"That is true, we provide a certain quantity of fuel to the Taliban as per their desire and our contribution for jihad," said a manager at one of the fuel stations in Khar.

In the neighbouring Mohmand tribal region, the Taliban are not collecting Zakat, but seek contributions from harvested crops and also collect skins of sacrificed animals.

The Maulvi Nazir-led Taliban in Ahmedzai Wazir areas of South Waziristan collect neither Zakat nor Ushr, but the heavy fines they impose on the residents are one of the main sources of revenue to run the "Movement for Return of Taliban rule in Afghanistan".

Brig (r) Mehmood Shah, former FATA security chief, says the sum that they collect through Zakat or Ushr is too small. "They are collecting taxes which the political administration used to collect on transport of goods. The militants earn up to Rs 30 million a month from tax collection in Kurram tribal district alone," he told Daily Times.

Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, leading the single largest militant group, is said to be spending around Rs 3 billion annually on militancy, and tribal sources say he was not heard emphasising too much on collection of Zakat.

Senior counter-terrorism officials say the militants abduct affluent people for random to generate funds.

Militant groups raised special squads for bank robbery, high profile kidnapping and taking away Afghanistan-bound containers, said the officials, citing certain cases as examples.

The only militant groups that vie for collection of Zakat and Ushr happen to be in North Waziristan.

Mine blast kills six in Dera Bugti
At least six people were killed and three injured when their vehicle hit a landmine in Dera Bugti district on Thursday, reported Dawn News.

The channel quoted official sources as saying that a truck, carrying pro-government Bugti commander Wadera Fazal Bugti and his colleagues, hit a landmine planted by unidentified men in the Loti area, killing Fazal Bugti and five of his companions. Three men were wounded and have been hospitalised. Wadera Fazal Bugti was a renegade commander of slain Bugti tribe chief Nawab Akbar Bugti, the channel reported. Law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and started investigation.

Bajaur: Thousands flee tribal conflict in border region
(AKI) - Around 135,000 residents have reportedly fled a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan to avoid clashes between security forces and Taliban militants. Officials said that up to half of the population of some villages in the troubled Bajaur tribal district had fled, although militants were trying to stop people from leaving. "We have around 135,000 people who have left their homes there," the additional chief secretary for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Habibullah Khan said. "We have directed officials in adjoining districts to provide shelter, food and health care to the migrating families."

Witnesses said that thousands of families had arrived in Shabqadar, a small town adjoining the tribal belt. Residents and welfare organisations were raising funds and cooking food for them, they said.

Iraq
Iraqi Shiite Terror Squads Receiving Training in Iran
WASHINGTON -- Iraqi Shiite explosive and assassination teams are being trained in at least four locations in Iran by Tehran's elite Quds force and Lebanese Hezbollah, according to intelligence gleaned from captured militia fighters and other sources in Iraq.

A senior U.S. military intelligence officer in Baghdad also said the fighters planned to return to Iraq in the next few months to kill specific Iraqi officials as well as U.S. and Iraqi forces. The officer on Wednesday provided Iraq's national security adviser with several lists of the assassination teams' expected targets. The country's intelligence service is now preparing operations to determine where and when the specially trained fighters will enter Iraq and will provide an assessment to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, the intelligence officer said.

Iran, Hezbollah's mentor, denies giving any support to Shiite extremists in Iraq.
"Wudn't us. It was .. someone else."
The U.S. official disclosed the information in an attempt to create political pressure on Iran to suspend the training and prevent the militia fighters from returning to Iraq. The U.S. military also wants the Iraqi government to take steps to protect the targets. "Wanted" posters picturing men believed to be heading the special groups are being posted around Baghdad, the military officer said.

The fighters are expected to return to Iraq between now and October, but the officer said there's no intelligence suggesting they are actually in Iraq yet.

Many of the fighters ran away fled to Iran this spring after Iraqi government forces cracked down first on militia sanctuaries in Basra and Sadr City in Baghdad, then Amarah, and now in Diyala province, the military officer said. One of the reasons the U.S. believes the special groups moved out during that period is the sharp decline in the number of deadly roadside bombs using explosively formed penetrators. In March, there were 55 such attacks. By July, that number had dropped to around 18, the officer said. U.S. intelligence believes those sophisticated bombs can be traced back to Iran.

The elite Quds Force is a branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The Islamic militant group Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, is believed to receive weapons from Syria and Iran. The number of "special group criminals" -- the U.S. name for Iraqi fighters sponsored by Iran -- is unknown but is estimated to be in the hundreds and possibly more than 1,000.

The officer said training is going on in at least four locations in Iran: Qom, Tehran, Ahvaz and Mashhad. According to the officer, the training camps are operating under the direction of Quds force commander, Brig. Gen. Ghassem Soleimani, with the knowledge and approval of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The training includes how to conduct reconnaissance to pinpoint targets, small arms and weapons training, small unit tactics, and terrorist cell operations and communications.

They are also learning how to use explosively formed penetrator bombs and other improvised explosive devices and rocket propelled grenades, including the RPG-29, a signature weapon of Lebanese Hezbollah and the Quds force.

Lebanese Hezbollah conducts much of the training in the camps because its members speak Arabic, the dominant language in Iraq.

The U.S. officer said there were no confirmed reports of Lebanese Hezbollah members crossing into Iraq.

That conflicts with what Iraqi Shiite lawmakers and a top Army officer told The AP last month: Hezbollah trainers were running training camps in southern Iraq until April, when they were pushed into Iran by the Iraqi crackdown.

The trainees in the Iranian camps include three Iraqis already wanted by the Iraqi government for terrorist attacks: Haji Mahdi, Haji Thamir, and Baqir al Sa'idi, the officer said. He identified two Iraqi Shiite militia groups in Iran by name: "The League of the Righteous," or "Asaib al Haq," and the "Kataib al Hezbollah."

The "special group criminals" are offshoots of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Jaysh al-Mahdi militia. They spun off their own groups after al-Sadr declared a cease-fire with the Iraqi government in August 2007 and are not thought to be under his control now.

Boom Bitch Kills 19 in Attack on Shiite Pilgrims in Iskandariya
Iraqi police say a female suicide bomber has killed at least 19 people and wounded at least 40 - the latest in a series of attacks on Shi'ite pilgrims heading to a major religious festival south of Baghdad. Police say the woman detonated her explosives Thursday in Iskandariya, as the pilgrims set off for the festival in the Shi'ite holy city of Karbala.

Earlier, in Baghdad's Karrada district, police say a roadside bomb killed another pilgrim and wounded at least seven others as they headed to the festival.

Also today, police say an explosion killed a policeman in the capital's southern Zafaraniya district. Security officials say the blast wounded at least five other people.

Tens of thousands of Shi'ites are expected in Karbala for the festival marking the birth of Imam al-Mahdi, Shi'ite Islam's 12th and last imam.

In other news, the U.S. Navy today accused six sailors of abusing detainees at a U.S. detention center in Iraq in May. The Navy says the sailors were working at a camp in southern Iraq when the alleged assaults took place. It says two detainees suffered minor abrasions and eight others were sealed in a cell that had been sprayed with a "riot control agent." A Navy statement says the six sailors face courts martial. Seven other sailors received non-judicial punishments in the incident.

In other violence today, officials say a roadside bomb killed two policemen and wounded six others when it struck their patrol near the Iraqi town of Buhriz, north of the capital.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Tanzim gunman who broke pledge to cease terror arrested by IDF
Israeli security forces apprehended a senior Tanzim gunman who had violated a signed pledge to cease all terror-related activities, Israeli media reported Thursday after military censors lifted a gag order on the case.

The Tanzim operative, Firas Tashtush, was arrested by an elite Israel Defense Forces unit during a military operation in Nablus.
He is suspected of planning to supply Tanzim members with explosive materials, and was said to have taken part in attacks against IDF troops in the area.
He is suspected of planning to supply Tanzim members with explosive materials, and was said to have taken part in attacks against IDF troops in the area.

Tashtush, 24, signed an agreement a few months ago which committed him to ceasing any involvement in terror-related activities. Nevertheless, it became clear recently to security authorities that Tashtush "grossly" deviated form the agreement, eschewing his pledge to desist from participation in terror activities. With his arrest last week, Tashtush was taken into custody for questioning by the Shin Bet security service.

The agreement between IDF officers and senior members of Fatah and the Tanzim stipulated that operatives previously involved in terrorism who signed a document pledging to end such activity would be subject to a trial period of supervision by the Israeli security forces. If the Palestinian signatories abided by their pledge, they would then be granted a pardon, and Israel would not seek their arrest. Likewise, if the militants breach the commitments contained in the agreement, those responsible would be arrested on suspicion of conducting terror activities.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Cameras caught images of possible suspect in Tripoli explosion
Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar said Thursday that surveillance cameras caught images of a possible suspect who was carrying a briefcase believed used in Wednesday's Tripoli bombing . "This act could have been carried out to drag the army into a confrontation," Najjar told the Voice of Lebanon radio station. He said the bomb attack could have also been an act of revenge against the Lebanese army which fought fierce battles in 2007 with extremists from Fatah al-Islam in the northern refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared.
