Afghanistan
Civilian death toll rises to 76, not counting bunnies, kittens and baby ducks
KABUL, Afghanistan U.S.-led troops attacked a compound where Taliban leaders were meeting and killed 30 militants, American and Afghan military officials said yesterday, but the Interior Ministry said a large number of civilians died.

The U.S. said it would investigate. The coalition was striking back against insurgents who have stepped up attacks on foreign and Afghan troops. The coalition said its troops called in airstrikes on the compound in the Shindand district of western Herat province Thursday.

About 30 militants were killed and five others were detained, a spokesman, 1st Lt. Nathan Perry, said. An Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman, Gen. Mohammad Zaher Azimi, confirmed the clash but said five of the 30 dead were civilians.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said U.S. coalition bombs killed 76 civilians, including 19 women and 50 children under the age of 15.
Let's see, 7 men with 19 wives father 50 children, that's about right. Must be true.

DU is for blasting holes in armor - not Taliban motorsycles and pick-up trucks. Even if it was dangerous (and as a heavy metal it probably is somewhat) we would not have been using it in A'stan.

As for fucking, I thought that was a normal behaviour, so I'm not sure why he is so upset about it.

Finally, since when America sneezes, Europe gets the flu, one would think Mr. Sane European Old White Dude would be more concerned about the impact on his part of the world of those gentlemen he seems to object to so strongly, rather than feeling sorry for us. Here we go again: Afghan president sez 70 civilians died in US attack
The U.S.-led coalition said Saturday that it would investigate allegations that civilians died during a battle between its troops and militants in western Afghanistan.

Coalition officials said Thursday's strikes in Herat province killed 30 militants, including a Taliban leader. But Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior said that 76 civilians were killed in the clash.

President Hamid Karzai on Saturday condemned the operation, saying it hadn't been coordinated with local security officials in Azizabad village. He said "at least 70 innocent civilians, most of them women and children" were killed.

However, American officials say U.S. and Afghan soldiers investigated the site of the bombing afterward and know the exact number of militants killed. "Obviously there's allegations and a disconnect here. The sooner we can get that cleared up and get it official, the better off we'll all be," U.S. coalition spokesman 1st Lt. Nathan Perry said. "We had people on the ground."

The Interior Ministry's claim also contradicted the Afghan Ministry of Defense's version of the battle. Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said 25 militants and five civilians were killed in the attack.

Karzai said in a statement that the Afghan government would soon announce "necessary measures" to prevent civilian casualties in the future. He has long demanded that U.S. and NATO officials take care to not harm civilians during their military operations, an issue that undermines the Afghan government and causes great anger in Afghan villages.

The competing claims by the U.S. coalition and the two Afghan ministries were impossible to verify because of the remote and dangerous location of the battle site. Complicating the matter, Afghan officials are known to exaggerate civilian death claims for political payback, to qualify for more compensation money from the U.S. or because of pressure from the Taliban.

U.S. military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Rumi Nielson-Green said a thorough assessment was done after the battle and the coalition knows it killed 30 militants, including a high-ranking Taliban leader. "We stand by our account and our reports and what we know, and I can't reconcile why (the Interior Ministry) would have a different figure," Nielson-Green said.

The operation was launched after an intelligence report that a Taliban commander, Mullah Siddiq, was inside a compound presiding over a meeting of militants, said Azimi, the Defense Ministry spokesman. Siddiq was one of those killed during the raid, Azimi said.

More than 3,400 people -- mostly militants -- have been killed in insurgency-related violence this year, according to figures from Western and Afghan officials.

Afghan president sez 70 civilians died in US attack

A standard ritual President Hamid Karzai seems obliged to condemn these operations after every one of the larger *Pashtun/Talib routs..

The Tribals don't seem to hold a resentment or grudge long enough to make it to a Loya Jirga so it seems to be a win win diplomatically for Karzai and his Gubmint.

* Karzai's Tribe: The Pashtun Tribes are the largest group of Tribes in A-stan.

but terrorists your freedom fighters... can use and do anything.

#14  Some of the gruesome rense pics I've already seen on other anti-DU webbsites, where they were claimed to be from iraq... not to say that DU isn't an health hazard, being an heavy metal with carcinous effects once vaporized IIRC (RB used to have an actual working expert of aerial munitions to dwell on the topic), but I somehow doubt much has been dropped on afghanistan, since it's obviously an anti-armor ammo type, so why would gunship use 30mm rounds that are less effective against standing persons and structures?

Also, rense is cool for ufo flaps and high-strangeness, but the whole NWO-fueled antiwar stuff is, let's say, less interesting than the website as a whole, kinda like the paul craig roberts insane rants at Vdare...

#16  Where would that Sane Euroweenie Old White Marxist be if the US hadn't saved his bacon in WWII and provided his security blanket ever since? Ask him if he'd prefer Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union. And if it wasn't for the US keeping Al Qaeda bogged down in places like Iraq and Afghanistan he might already be banging his head on the floor five times a day to keep the AQ boys from beheading him.

#17  Look you racist Euro fuck. Don't ever assume Americans are white just because you are are of melanin deficient, mass murdering stock. Americans come from all parts of the world, not just from your inbred corner of the planet. You will find many here are majority "other race", like me for one. By the way, I was born 10,000 miles from my home. Can you say the same for your parochial self?

Part of having these much wider cultural and educational horizons allows us to examine the worth of many cultures and choose those elements which work the best. Americans are not limited to a sunless, humorless corner of the planet bent on slow suicide.

Arabs, specifically muslims, who comprise 98% of Araby, do consider themselves the ubermenschen. Allah gave them the world and the other races and their belongings belong to them for conquest, plunder and rape. Read the koran sometime. I suggest you do it in chronological order. It will open you eyes, that is, it if hasn't been permanently blinded by your ideology.

If you read Rantburg for any length of time, you will learn there is a much higher military experience level than on you average site, including me. Infinitely higher than the leftist trash sites you are do doubt enamored with.

You see, my dear ignoramus, DU muntitions are used to destroy tanks, like the 50,000 we Americans held at bay to save your worthless ass from the gulag and mass starvation. They are not nearly as good so good for antipersonnel use. For that we use HEI or HEDP. You would know that if you were educable or had any military experience. But instead you spout memorized Marxist propaganda no different from the madrassa kids and just as applicable to the modern world as one of those koran kids.

Hey, InSane European Old White Dude, I served in the military for 26 years. There are more than thirty of us here with similar experience, including the site owner. We KNOW war is hell, from first-hand experience. Many of us have worked that part of the world (from Afghanistan/Pakistan west to Morocco, from the former Soviet Union to the southern tip of Africa) for many, many years, and know far more than you obviously do about what's happening there. Fred, Old Spook, and I are all ex-intel types. We KNOW you're full of sh$$, so we don't show you any respect. Respect is EARNED, and you've shown nothing that would earn respect in this crowd. #34  I am grateful I can be certain Sane European Old White Dude is not one of the relatives my parents left behind when they moved here after the war.* My relatives are incapable of impoliteness. Ah, for the good old days when one was not considered educated unless he knew which fork to use, whether it it the duchess or the marquis who entered the room first*, and one's duties to one's host.

Still, I must admit I qualify as neither tough nor a guy, nor even military. So Mr. Sane European Old White Dude does get one point for that. but on the other hand, I've never pretended to any of those categories, so he loses that point for implying false pretensions.

*What? Oh, the marquis with the hostess on his arm, followed by the duchess on the arm of the host.

#35  Beavis, where's your mate butthead?

3dc, can you count? And know what that means? OIF ~ 4,000 US deaths, ~ 20,000 casualties; ~ 1,2000,000 Iraqi deaths? "A bunch of murdering barbarians..." What a senseless arse you must be.

OK, anonymous5089, you address part of the substance, but ""old white european" an oxymoron anyway?" No it's not. And I don't choose to die because some horrible unthinking little shit offers the choice. I think I am an exponentially more useful member of society than you, so I'll hang on in for my natural. And try to persuade other younger men and women to oppose the likes of YOU.

And ed, dear ed, I do so feel your pain... Well anyway, I do know what DU is used for, I realise it is not typically used against thin skin vehicles, I do know what the generality of explosive munitions are used for... and I realise that, being born 10,000 miles from USA that you are just SOO sophisticated and culturally aware.... Or.. yeah right. "much wider cultural and educational horizons allows us to examine the worth of many cultures and choose those elements which work the best." Fuck me, what an ass..

Now, to badanov, OK. You do address the content. Fair play to you. But as regards:

"But then, if you had any brains, you'd enquire first to get our side of the story before attacking us at this site.

I care. It sucks to be the families of the those infants.

Doesn't mean WE'RE responsible, though..." Well yes it does. We all have vicarious liability. If we disregard what our governments are doing, we have some degree of responsibility.

And my post was, by the simple facts offered, a question. To which most of the responders offered the same kind of response which I could have seen 65 years ago, in a similar military scenario. (Germany, the difficulties our poor German boys were facing from those thugs in the Warsaw ghetto, or in Stalingrad, or (fill in your own))

btw "I can get you a much better deal than the buttsecks you're getting from your current hosting company." Well, I don't even know most of what you're talking about. If you are referring to 'traceability', I don't care. It's a lesson I have learned about being free. In a world of Echelon ++, it's what we have to do.

I'm not aware that babies are driving tanks or armored vehicles.
Posted by: European Conservative || 08/23/2008 21:49 Comments || Top||

#68  On the contrary, ed, I did not claim 'that America is shooting babies with DU' The point of DU munitions, as pointed out by an earlier poster, is of vaporisation of the heavy metal, and it's ingestion by nearby humans, who, if they are pregnant, are at risk of the horrific results shown on that website. I understand that that risk is not just in the immediate aftermath of some event, but is for ever after, or until the site is cleaned up.

And yes, this could therefore include Soviet munitions.

As regards "Since I'm sure that you see your own, 'white' ethnicity as superior", that post was in the context of my belief that you were probably of European ethnic origin, as most of the posters on this site seem (to me) to be. Your claim to be other than that, I can accept, but so what?

#75  To European Conservative, having looked up your site, I note

"Their few objective justifications for such a ban are derived from the fact that the resident population has to continue to live on the former battlefields, which according to valid radiation protection norms, are at least locally radioactively contaminated; and from the fact that the long-term effects of depleted uranium on man and the environment are not entirely clarified.
Generally it is left to the reader to weigh and interpret this technical "Background Information" and the above summarized viewpoints. Clearly, this kind of ammunition leaves behind a long-lasting contamination on the battlefields, which is not compatible with civil radiation protection norms. This argument holds independently whether or not - objectively - there is a danger to man and the environment"

#76  Who are killing civilians and committing atrocities in Afghanistan? It's muslim terrorists who are setting off bombs in markets or firing rockets into cities. US and western forces have held off many attacks because these terrorists, more accurately islam sanctioned jihadists, take civilian hostages or hide among them. What does the Geneva Conventions have to say about it?

Who are killing civilians and committing atrocities in Iraq? Who are blowing themselves up in any crowed place? Who are roasting children alive on an open fire to terrorize there fathers? Who are beheading people and stuffing their bodies with explosives to kill their relatives who have the audacity to pick the body off the street?

Who killed 200,000 Algerians? Who are taking slaves and have killed 2.5-3.0 million black Sudanese? That's REAL genocide you know. Who are blowing up girls' schools and murdering women who rebuff their advances? Who are committing acts of mass murder from Sengal to the Philipines, from Britain and Beslan to Nairobi and New York? Who can't analyze the facts? Wake up and smell the jihad.

Afghanistan: Italian soldiers injured north of Kabul
(AKI) - Three Italian soldiers were injured in an explosion that struck their military patrol about 20 kilometres north of the capital, Kabul, on Friday. The soldiers - all from the north of Italy - were not seriously injured in the attack which occurred while there were clearing mines in the rural region.

There are 2,350 Italian soldiers in Afghanistan as part of the NATO multinational force and are divided between Kabul and the western province of Herat.

Meanwhile, US-led troops attacked a compound where Taliban leaders were meeting in western Afghanistan, killing 30 militants, US and Afghan officials said on Friday. The attack took place in the Shindand district of western Herat province and NATO troops found large caches of weapons and ammunition.

Afghanistan: NATO soldiers killed in bomb attack
(AKI) - Three NATO soldiers were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in central Afghanistan on Wednesday. The blast occurred in central Ghazni province but NATO did not identify the nationalities of the victims. Polish troops are assigned to patrol the province.

The attack occurred as President Nicolas Sarkozy met French troops in Afghanistan following the deaths of 10 French soldiers 60 kilometres east of Kabul on Monday. Sarkozy flew to Kabul immediately after hearing news of the casualties and pledged to continue France's commitment in Afghanistan.

France plans to send 700 troops by the end of August, raising its troop numbers in Afghanistan to 2,600.

Meanwhile, the US-led coalition said more than 30 militants were killed in a battle with its troops in eastern Afghanistan. The coalition said in a statement that the clash took place in eastern Laghman province on Wednesday. There were neither coalition nor Afghan troops killed.

#1  You know, if I were a NATO commander, or if I were the Minister of Defense of a NATO country, I'd be pushing troops into Afghanistan and Iraq as fast as I could, after seeing what happened to Georgia. That's especially true for troops from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Serbia, and anywhere else that "used to be" part of the Soviet empire. Not only would I want to learn everything possible about counter-insurgency, I'd also do my best to learn how to conduct an insurgent campaign without getting my country blown to bits. BTW, it wouldn't hurt the REST of Europe to have that kind of training. I'd also be changing some gun laws. One of the reasons Switzerland has never been invaded is because it would take an army of 20 million or so to completely subdue the country, and by the time you did, there wouldn't be anything left to steal. If every nation had an army like the Swiss army, Europe would be unconquerable. Of course, you'd need citzens loyal to the country, or at least to the region. That kinda leaves out muzlimbs.

Africa Horn
Somali pirates try again, come up empty
Kuala Lumpur - Heavily-armed Somali pirates shot at a Japanese cargo ship in a bid to hijack it in the Gulf of Aden Saturday amid an intensification of attacks off the Somali coast, a maritime watchdog said. The incident brought to seven the number of ships attacked in the Gulf of Aden in the past month, said Noel Choong, head of the Kuala Lumpur-based International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) Piracy Reporting Centre.

The Japanese-operated cargo ship travelling from Singapore was sailing through the area on its way to the Middle East when at about 0808 GMT pirates in two speedboats opened fire at the vessel in a bid to stop it, Choong said. The ship increased its speed and took evasive action, managing to escape the attack with no injury to the 20 crew, he added. There were no Japanese nationals on board.

Choong said the pirate mothership was spotted near the scene of the attack.

"We call on the United Nations and the international community, especially those with naval assets to take action," he told AFP. "It appears the attacks are continuing and the pirates are looking for more ships to hijack," he added.

Of the 24 Somali attacks, 19 occurred in the Gulf of Aden off the country’s north coast.

#3  Nimble...as a Navy guy a take some umbrage with the idea we have no Navy over there. The Navy assets in the AOR are under OPCON of JTF Horn of Africa. Commander JTF-HOA gets his orders through the chain of command from GW and the NCA. Strategic policy dictates the ROEs for the HOA AOR, and that does not include chasing down Somali pirates. If you have a beef it's with GW, not the Navy.

#4  Unfortunately, the only way to stop this is to have a naval force on site 24/7. There's 1500 miles of coastline to cover. The best response is an ARCLIGHT strike down through the center of any town that harbors pirates. We should know by now where the mother-ship docks - if not, Intel's slipping. That town should be the first one visited. Pirates would become persona-non-grata everywhere afterwards.

Sometimes, you've GOTTA USE the big stick. Otherwise, it doesn't remain a threat.

Did it ever occur to you that the innocent may be unarmed, and in fear of their lives, just like innocent civilians in the US when in the presence of dangerous criminals? Old Patriot, your barbaric point of view is worthy of Al-Quaida. As a fellow Yank, if I could vote you off of the island, if the real world worked that way. The US is busy, but the Danes, for example, are lending a hand by sending in a navy vessel to help deal with the pirates.

#8  anymouse, The problem is the naval assets we have are not great for anti-piracy and we aren't doing anything to develop the capability. Instead we get DDG-1000. This piracy problem is going to grow if we don't start to address it. The Navy needs to get into the WoT, just as the Air Force should.

#9  Nimble...I'll agree with you...at least 1/2 way. Interdiction of small boats is a USCG/LE function. You could argue that we should have greater USCG cutter and LE craft in the AOR working with the CIC of a DDG. But we don't fund the USCG well enough to perform there own DHS mission in US waters.

I understand what you are trying to say, and agree we should be kicking some butt over there. However, the ROEs for HOA do not support that mission at the moment...and that's the key take away.

Al-Qaeda in North Africa claims responsibility for recent attacks killing dozens in Algeria
Al-Qaeda organization in North Africa has indicated in an audio statement posted on a website, that for the first time the recent suicide attack has been conducted last Wednesday by a Mauritanian terrorist, while a security source indicated that the suicide boomer, who committed an attack against the centre of Coats Guards at Zemouri in Boumeedes central province, is originating from Lamontagne locality southern Algiers.

In this regard, Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the recent 4 attacks, adding that the attacks occuring at Zemouri, Issers, and Bouira, are in retaliation to the killing of 12 of its elements in an ambush at Beni Douala region in Tizi Ouzou, last August, 6th. Al-Qaeda has qualified these attacks, which have been masterminded by Al-Qaeda leader namely Abdelmalek Droudkel, as "retaliation." The audio statement added that the campaign revenged the 12 terrorists killed by Army troops, and ended last Wednesday, following the twin suicide bombings in which 12 have been killed, and 42 injured.

The same statement added that the car of the 12 terrorists killed in Beni Douala in Tizi Ouzou, has been bobby-trapped, while official sources have indicated that they have been boomed by a helicopter.

Meanwhile, Al-Qaeda has justified the attack against the bus transporting the workers of the Canadian company, SNC-Lavalin, by the presence of the Canadian troops in Afghanistan. No Canadian has been killed in this attack, which has been conducted by a terrorist nicknamed Abderahmane Abou Zaineb Al-Mauritani.

It is noteworthy that Al-Qaeda in North Africa, resorts to foreigners to commit its odious attacks, this is to confirm the declaration of Droudkel, in an interview with the U.S newspaper, the New York Times. In which Droudkel said that his terrorist organization includes terrorists hailing from different nationalities, including Mauritanians.

According to the same audio statement, the attack carried out against the headquarters of the Army operational sector in Bouira, has been perpetuated by a terrorist nicknamed Abou Baker El Assimi, while the suicide boomer hitting the Coasts Guards at Zemouri, nicknamed Mohamed Abou Sadjeda El Assimi. The suicide boomer behind the attack rocking the National Gendarmerie academy at Issers near Boumerdes, has not been mentioned in this statement.

Bangladesh
Tales from the Crossfire Gazette (weekend edition)
RAB-12 on early Friday killed an alleged militant leader in a 'shootout' at Bhulbaria under Ataikula in Pabna, an official said.
No, we don't know where that is ...
Jahurul Islam alias Mithu, 32, son of Abdur Razzak of Swarogram ...
They never identify Mom. I think she's ashamed ...
... under Ataikula Police Station, ...
Deeply under the police station ...
... is the third militant chieftain to be liquidated in the last couple of months ...
'liquidated' -- rather old-fashioned. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
... in the area gradually heating up with the militants flexing muscles afresh.
Here they come to save the day-y-y-y-y!
RAB is on its way-y-y-y-y!!
Rab-12 Pabna camp commander Flt Lt Ahmed Faisal said Jahurul was the regional leader of the banned Purbo Banglar Communist Party (ML-Lal Pataka).
Something like the Biplobi Communist Party, only different ...
And not nearly as shiny as the New Biplobi Commies..
After they were tipped-off ...
Thank you Mahmoud the Weasel ...
... that members of the militant group had been holding a clandestine meeting at a place near Bhulbaria Primary School, ...
Using a school as their secret lair? No wonder the RAB is mad at them ...
... a RAB team had gone there at 4:30 am, Faisal added.
[Clink!]"C'mon, Mithu! We're goin' up to the Bhulbaria Primary School!"
"Whut? Whut? It's... ummm... 4 a.m.!"
"Yeah. It'll take us a half hour to get there."
Just after the magic hour, must have had a prior engagement ...
"Don't kill me! Please don't kill me!"
He claimed ...
No, no, Faisal, you never 'claim', it just 'happened', okay?
... the alleged terrorists opened fire on them and RAB retaliated, sparking a 20-minute gunbattle, ...
Which no one seems to have noticed, and there's no ballistics report ...
which left Jahurul killed on the spot.
"Ow!... Ow!... Hey!... Stop that! You're hurting me!... Ow!... Owwwwwww!... Gasp!... Rosebud!"
That spot right over there. No mention of his accomplices absconding, but it's like they were never there in the first place.
A .22 bore revolver, a handmade LG gun and 10 rounds of ammunition had been retrieved from the rendezvous, he also said.
Shutter gun has to be back by 5 am, no excuses ...
He said there were at least 12 systems cases including eight for murder against Jahurul with different Pabna police stations.
No wonder Mom is ashamed ...
The body has been sent to Pabna Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Whereupon Dr. Quincy will discover that our hero is dead ...
"Sam! Look at this!"
"Wow, Dr. Quincy! He's really dead!"

Turkey: Blast injures 16 in western province
(AKI) - Sixteen people were injured when a parked car bomb exploded on Thursday as two buses carrying police and soldiers passed by. Eight policemen, three soldiers and five civilians were injured in the explosion. The blast took place in the district of Konak in the western province of Izmir.

"Our assessment is that the explosion was caused by plastic explosives detonated by remote control," Izmir Governor Cahit Kirac was quoted as saying by state-run Anatolian news agency. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast follows a previous one on Tuesday, when a suicide bomber detonated explosives at a checkpoint in the southern province of Mersin as police tried to stop the car on a highway. At least 12 police officers were injured in the blast.

Home Front: WoT
L.I. UAV built by Egyptian Illegal Alien Sparks Terror Investigation
An unmanned drone being built by an engineer on Long Island sparked a large counter-terrorism investigation across the New York area, officials tell WNBC.com. Police said they had stumbled upon overnight testing of the drone at a little-used airstrip in Calverton, Long Island.

The investigation began on a dark and stormy night in February of last year, when investigators first learned testing of the drone was underway. Officials said the drone was being designed to carry more than 600 pounds of explosives. "It could be in the air for 8-10 hours and there's potential harm if it is carrying a large amount of toxic material," NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in explaining why his department's counterterrorism officials were concerned.

Police surveillance video obtained by News 4 New York shows a white van rolling onto the tarmac, a small group of men jumping out and ground testing the unmanned flight vehicle.

Kelly said the engineer building the drone never reported his work to any agency including the Federal Aviation Administration or local authorities. Investigators said concern increased for a time when they learned the man behind the project was an Egyptian national who had entered the U.S. on a Sudanese passport.

"It was such a bizarre set of circumstances," said New York State Homeland Security Director Michael Balboni. "Of course we watched it as closely as we did anything that was on our radar screen."
You might even think the mook was a terr.
NYPD officials worked with Suffolk County police and the FBI to determine there were no ties to terror.
Nope. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Under questioning, the engineer said he was an inventor hoping to sell this drone model to the U.S. military.
Yeah, that's why I had to test at night. Just like Grumman.
NYPD Lieutenant William McGroarty said during the investigation they had other questions.
I'll bet.
"What if this individual could not sell to the military?" McGroarty asked. "Would he then turn and sell it to the highest bidder?"
Gee, what if the didn't even try to sell it to the military, Sherlock?
In this case, police said there is no evidence any laws were broken as the drone was tested on the ground. Officials said if it had gone into the air without prior FAA approval, it could have been considered a crime.
Another defeat at lawfare.
While there are no terror links, police said their investigation continues. The engineer, who News 4 New York will not name because he was not charged, did not respond to numerous requests for comment. His drone project has now been taken over by a Maryland-based company that has registered with the FAA, officials said. One investigator said the engineer, at best, had showed poor judgment in trying to do the project in a manner that raised so many alarms.
Why isn't this asshole being deported to the Sudan?

Congrats to the NY cops for nabbing this guy. When it comes out how much has been covered up, people are going to be really po'ed.

#1  Some background for reference here

No Terrorism Ties Here -- Move Along [Andy McCarthy]

WNBC News in New York City reports that the NYPD, working with Suffolk Country police and the FBI, have concluded there are no terrorism ties to be concerned about in connection with their discovery that a man, described only as an Egyptian engineer who entered the U.S. on a Sudanese passport, has designed an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of carrying more than 600 pounds of explosives.

The engineer was assisted by a small group of men whom investigators surveilled as they drove a white van onto a tarmac, jumped out, and ground-tested the drone. There was no observation of the UAV ever getting into the air.

The testing of the drone was done in the dead of night on a little used airstrip in Calverton, Long Island.

I find this more than a little alarming, notwithstanding the assurances of police that "no ties to terror" have been found, their conclusion that no crime was committed (because there was no lift-off, which would have been a criminal violation of FAA regulations), and their apparent acceptance of the engineer's claim that he is "an inventor hoping to sell this drone model to the U.S. military." (The "drone project has now been taken over by a Maryland-based company that has registered with the FAA," the report says).

First, as we might recall from other investigations over the past several years, it is the practice especially of the FBI to find "no ties to terror" in any case involving Muslims where there is no known evidence of a relationship between the subjects of the investigation and any established terrorist organization (such as al Qaeda or Hezbollah). Because of concerns about "profiling" — despite the fact that we are under siege by Muslim terrorists — the fact that investigative subjects happen to be Muslims is deemed irrelevant (as if, in a Mafia investigation, you would have to ignore whether a subject was Italian or not for fear of being accused of Italophobia.) There is no concession in the report that the subjects of this investigation are Muslims. I'm gonna go out on a limb, though, and guess there's an itsy-bitsy chance given that the engineer in question is an Egyptian national with a Sudanese passport. The happenstance that the subjects may be Muslims would not of itself make them guilty of anything — but it's not irrelevant.

Second, as I recount in Willful Blindness, the first known activities of the jihadist cell that eventually killed Meir Kahane in 1990, plotted to kill Hosni Mubarak in 1992, bombed the World Trade Center in 1993, and was stopped a few months later in the midst of plotting to bomb other New York City landmarks, was the FBI's investigation of paramilitary training over several weekends in July 1989. The Muslim men in question — who at the time were not known to have ties to any established terrorist organizatoin but went on to carry out the aforementioned plots — piled into vans at a radical mosque in Brooklyn and traveled to a shooting range where they conducted shooting practice with a variety of weapons, including AK-47s. The FBI closed the investigation when the men discovered they were under surveillance and complained that they were being harrassed.

The shooting range they chose for the training was in Calverton, Long Island.

#2  police said there is no evidence any laws were broken as the drone was tested on the ground.

Where they not trespassing? Should not an Egyptian national have entered the U.S. on an Egyptian passport? What kind of visa did he enter with, if he came legally, and has he remained within its limits, including duration of stay? What about his little friends -- are they here legally, etc, too?

There are many questions the FBI clearly will not answer for fear of panicking the public. All well and good, but if they are a freelancing cell of bad guys unconnected to one of the listed terror groups, it would be wise to convict them of something, and either jail or deport them.
Posted by: trailing wife || 08/23/2008 16:38 Comments || Top||

#3  To give the FBI some benefit of the doubt, failing to tie it to terrorism may also be to throw off other terrorists who are tied to the guys they nabbed. But I think J. Edgar would not have played it this close to the vest all the time.

Mighty Pakistan Army sez 37 militants killed in Swat
PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Troops backed by helicopter gunships pounded militants in Pakistan's volatile northwest Saturday, killing 37 in retaliation for suicide bombings that have put pressure on the new government, the army said.

Earlier Saturday, a car bombing at a police station killed six officers in Swat, a valley that used to be popular with tourists, and a roadside bomb in the same region wounded one civilian and four others.

The latest clashes follow one of the country's deadliest terrorist attacks ever on Thursday when a twin suicide bombing at a massive weapons factory killed 67 people and wounded more than 100. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for much of the violence and vowed to continue unless the army ended its fight against militants in remote, rugged regions along the Afghan border. "We've warned the government that we'd target police if the army did not stop operations against us," Muslim Khan, a spokesman for the militants, told The Associated Press. "But the government has ignored us."

The military said it had engaged in a fierce battle with militants in the Swat valley on Saturday. Army spokesman Maj. Nasir Ali said 37 militants and two soldiers were killed, but no militants in the area were immediately available to confirm the fighting or casualties on their side.
Nobody picking up on speed dial for the AP? What a shame...
The violence underscores the many challenges ahead for Pakistan's ruling coalition government since it forced Pervez Musharraf to resign as president earlier this week. The two main parties, traditional rivals united primarily in their hatred of the former military ruler, dabbled in striking peace deals with insurgents soon after coming to power, something he also had tried.

The peace effort has met no only limited success, and the government is back to relying on military operations in an attempt to beat back the militants, who have expanded their reach beyond traditional tribal regions.

Pak blasts toll rises to 78; would-be suicide bomber arrested
(PTI) Six people today succumbed to injuries sustained in twin suicide blasts outside an ordnance factory complex near the Pakistani capital, taking the toll to 78, even as an official said three bombers had carried out the deadly attack.

Interior Minister and senior Pakistan People's Party leader Rehman Malik said three suicide bombers had struck at the Pakistan Ordnance Factories in Wah cantonment yesterday. A fourth bomber was arrested before he could blow himself up and important clues were found during the investigation, he told reporters outside parliament.

Earlier reports had said only two bombers were involved in the attack. The bombers blew themselves up near two gates of the Pakistan Ordnance Factories, located about 50 km from Islamabad.

A total of 72 deaths were registered till late last night. More than 100 people were injured in the attack, the deadliest suicide bombing witnessed in Pakistan this year. The Pakistan Ordnance Factories Hospital commandant, Brig Arshad Zia, told reporters today that six more people had succumbed to their injuries, taking the toll to 78.

The bombers struck shortly after 2.30 pm, when a shift at the ordnance factories had just ended. Hundreds of civilian workers of the factories were emerging from the gates at the time of the attack.

Police officials today confirmed reports that a would-be suicide bomber had been detained near the ordnance factory complex. Police and security agencies had yesterday found a suicide jacket and explosives in a mosque located near the site of one of the blasts.

'Suicide bombers' among 16 killed in Hangu clash
Sixteen militants were shot dead in the Hangu district on Friday as Taliban attacked a security checkpost in South Waziristan. The gunbattle followed what an International Security Assistance Force statement called "co-ordinated artillery strikes inside Pakistan".

"As many as 16 miscreants were killed today in an exchange of fire with security forces," a military statement read on Friday. A doctor at Civil Hospital told Daily Times the hospital had received bodies of 15 suspected militants.

The gunbattle began when the security forces stopped a vehicle they suspected was carrying militants at the Sour Bridge checkpost near the Doaba town. A military statement said two of the militants were suicide bombers "of foreign origin".

Maulvi Nazir: Official sources in Wana said militants loyal to Maulvi Nazir fired rockets at Tiarzah Fort late on Thursday night injuring a paramilitary soldier. Seven militants were reported wounded when government forces retaliated, local administration officials said.

The attack on the fort came hours after NATO forces -- in an operation co-ordinated with Pakistani forces -- "fired multiple artillery rounds into Pakistan," the ISAF statement said. "The Pakistan military confirmed insurgents were preparing to fire rockets at an ISAF base in Paktika province."

"Pakistan (military) officers relayed that all rounds were on target, with no civilian casualties," the ISAF statement received in Peshawar via email said.

Israel reopens Gaza crossings after two-day closure
Israel re-opened its border freight crossings with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Friday, an Israeli official said, two days after they were shut in response to a rocket attack.

Defense Ministry official Peter Lerner said trucks carrying fuel, livestock, stationery for schools as well as food and medical supplies would enter the Gaza Strip through the Nahal Oz, Kerem Shalom, and Sufa commercial crossings.

Israel and Hamas agreed on a ceasefire in June. It calls on both sides to stop cross-border violence and on Israel to ease a blockade on the Gaza Strip that was tightened after the Islamist group seized control of the territory more than a year ago.

The truce has largely held, although Gaza militants have occasionally fired rockets into Israel leading to periodic closure of its borders with the coastal enclave.

Six suspects held in latest fatal Thai bombing
Police yesterday detained six people suspected of involvement in two bomb explosions in Sungai Kolok district on Thursday which left two people dead. Pol Col Somphong Chingduang, deputy provincial police chief, said police had traced the suspects from closed-circuit camera footage in the area of the blasts and then detained them for interrogation.

On Thursday, two bombs exploded at a restaurant in Sungai Kolok, killing Chalee Boonsawat, a reporter for Thai Rath daily newspaper, and injuring 33 other people. One of the injured victims died in hospital yesterday. Pol Col Prapun Meemongkol, superintendent of the district police station, and Phadung Wannaluck, a reporter for Modern Nine television station, were among the wounded.

Repair work on electricity utilities also got under way after they were damaged by insurgents at the time of the blasts. The town was left with no power throughout the night.

In the wake of the explosions, assistant police chief Pol Lt-Gen Adul Saengsingkaew ordered police forces in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and four districts of Songkhla to beef up security.

Pol Maj-Gen Pongsak Nakvijit, the provincial police chief, said violent attacks increased in frequency every year before September because it was deemed a holy month as the Muslim fasting period of Ramadan began. He added that investigators had possible leads on the bombers' identities, but could not give any details.

An intelligence source said the explosions were the work of rebels from the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) group operating in Sungai Padi and Sungai Kolok districts and on the Thai-Malaysian border. The group was controlled by two core leaders, Aziz Zo and Zahawuddin Zo.

Philippines: Militant leaders charged with murder
(AKI) - Police on Friday filed criminal charges against two field commanders of the Muslim separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front and more than 80 others for the alleged murder of civilians in the southern province of Mindanao.

Leader Abdulrahman Macapaar, alias Commander Bravo, and Kato Umbra, were charged in the Provincial Prosecutor's Office in Lanao del Norte Lanao with double murder, robbery and arson.
The rebel group has rejected government demands for the surrender of the two renegade commanders. Both have a 113,000 dollar bounty on them for recent attacks.
The rebel group has rejected government demands for the surrender of the two renegade commanders. Both have a 113,000 dollar bounty on them for recent attacks.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Thursday abandoned a peace deal with the MILF after Christians and politicians in Mindanao objected to what they feared was as a move to create an independent Muslim state.

According to the GMA News website, police cited Bravo and his men for the deadly attacks that occurred in various villages in North Cotabato province last Monday, where 36 people, mostly civilians, were killed.

Meanwhile , more than 25,000 people are believed to have been displaced in the recent violence.

Kato's men have been blamed for the clashes that erupted when they occupied scores of villages in North Cotabato province last week, as well as for attacks last Monday. Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno called on the MILF leadership to help the police in apprehending and bringing to justice the renegade commanders and their co-conspirators. "The filing of cases against the suspects are already known to the MILF central committee. We are hoping that they will assist the government in bringing to justice these lawless elements," Puno reportedly said. "If they are truly committed to peace and want the peace process to continue, then we expect them fully to cooperate with our system of justice."

30 dead in Philippine clashes
Clashes left 30 rebels dead in the southern Philippines overnight, just hours after the government scrapped a controversial peace deal with the Muslim guerrillas, the military said Friday.

The rebels were slain in villages bordering the Liguasan marshes around Maguindanao, said local military spokesman Colonel Julieto Ando. "All were killed in two days of simultaneous air and ground assaults," he said. Major Armand Rico, an army official, said the number of soldiers wounded had risen to 12 as Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels fought the military offensive on their stronghold near Liguasan marsh.

"They are familiar with the terrain in the Liguasan marshland, they have expertise in moving there so the military had to use air assets," Ando said. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said it had agreed with the government to provide an additional 250 metric tons of rice to help feed some 60,000 people displaced by the fighting in Maguindanao. Some 220,000 people have been displaced since the fighting began two weeks ago, according to the WFP.

Rebel spokesman Eid Kabalu said Friday that "fighting continued today with the military using air and ground assets, apparently to get Commander Kato." Military reports say about 100 people have been killed in two weeks of fighting between the government and MILF. Two attack aircraft bombed and strafed MILF positions near the town of Datu Piang on Thursday, and the rebels fought back with mortar fire, said local army commander Colonel Marlou Salazar.

In recent weeks government forces have been conducting an offensive in the north of the Sri Lanka which considered a stronghold of the separatist group.

The government estimates more than 5,993 rebels have been killed this year compared to 776 soldiers.
