Three US-led coalition troops and an Afghan working with them were killed in a bomb blast in Afghanistan on Tuesday as government officials said that roughly 40 rebels, some of them foreigners, died in air strikes. The fresh bloodshed comes as US President George W. Bush announced extra troops for Afghanistan's fight against a rising tide of extremism and the Afghan and Pakistan leaders pledged to stand together against terrorism.
The soldiers were killed in the east of Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device (IED) of the type regularly used by Taliban and other militants. The US-led coalition did not give the nationalities of the troops but most international soldiers in the east are American nationals. "Three coalition service members and one local-national contractor were killed today during an IED attack in eastern Afghanistan," the force said.
The new deaths raise to 201 the number of international soldiers to die in Afghanistan this year, according to an AFP tally based on official statements.
An Afghan soldier was killed separately by a remote-controlled bomb that had been fixed to a bicycle in the southern city of Kandahar, the Defense Ministry said. "One military policeman in the vehicle was martyred and two others were wounded," spokesman Mohammad Zahir Azimi told AFP.
Meanwhile, in the southern Uruzgan Province, troops were tipped off about a Taliban gathering on the outskirts of the town of Tirin Kot and sent in a strike early Tuesday, provincial police chief Juma Gul Himat said. "The coalition forces bombed them and killed 16 Taliban and wounded another nine," Himat said. Officials believed 50 rebels may have been killed or wounded but had only recovered 16 bodies, another official said.
And late Monday aircraft bombed a group of Taliban militants who had attacked a district center in eastern Paktia Province, a spokesman for the provincial government told AFP. "Twelve Taliban were killed in the NATO air strike. Nine of them are Chechens and three are Afghans and Pakistanis," the spokesman said.
US and other generals leading the battle against insurgents say there are an increasing number of foreign Islamists, including Arabs and Central Asians, involved in the fighting.
Clashes are meanwhile claiming the lives of an increasing number of civilians, with those killed in action by international troops of particular concern to the government, which needs public goodwill in its battle against the Islamists.
Meanwhile, NATO-led planes mistakenly bombed a house in a weapons malfunction in Afghanistan Tuesday, killing two civilians, the force said, amid concern about the number of Afghans being killed in military action.
Another 10 civilians were wounded when the weapon missed its target in the eastern province of Khost, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement. "An air-launched weapon dropped from an ISAF aircraft today in Khost has accidentally killed two civilians and wounded up to 10 others," the statement added.
ISAF forces on the ground had called in an air strike to help attack militants when the mishap occurred, it said. "When released, the weapon suffered a serious malfunction and missed its intended target by more than 2.5 kilometers impacting on a qalat [residential compound]," the statement said.

A terrorist turncoat revealed the information after he escaped from an Al-Qaeda cell on Sunday and turned himself over to police in the district of Wadi Rahiy, in the province of Ghalizan. After he surrendered, he decided to collaborate with police, revealing that Droukedel intended to carry out the attacks during Ramadan on key commercial targets in the west of the country.
The turncoat used to operate in the central regions of Algeria, under the command of Hudheifa Abu Yunes al-Asimi who originally came from the capital, Algiers. He clashed with the leader of the group because he did not want to involve civilians in any attacks.
According to the turncoat, Droukedel reportedly decided to change his strategy and relieve the pressure from central Algeria, recently the target of Al-Qaeda suicide attacks, to the western region to meet new objectives. He reportedly decided to invest in these new attacks with the money from the ransom gained from the kidnap of several businessmen in Boumerdes and Tizi Ouzou, east of Algiers.

A court here yesterday awarded 10 years' imprisonment to Javed Iqbal alias Mohammad, 28, Chittagong divisional chief of outlawed Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), in a case filed in connection with countrywide serial blasts on August 17, 2005.
Judge Shafiqul Islam of the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal gave the verdict, sentencing Mohammad to jail for bombing at GEC intersection in the port city as part of the serial blasts. The court also fined him Tk 5,000, in default he is to suffer another year in jail.
Javed Iqbal has so far been awarded 124 years' imprisonment in different terms in nine cases. He has the death sentence on 12 systems is also an accused in seven other cases, which are now under trial at different courts in Chittagong.

At least seven militants were killed and several others wounded in an assault by security forces in Tang Khata area in Bajaur Agency on Tuesday. Officials told Daily Times that the troops were informed that the militants were waiting to ambush a military convoy advancing towards Taliban hideouts.
The troops targeted the suspected positions with heavy arms, which resulted in the death of seven and injuries to several others. Locals said the Taliban fled leaving their arms behind. The troops also pounded militants' positions in Bayee Cheena, Mula Said, Jaar, Mula Kalay, Kausar, Badan and Dama Dola areas in the agency on Monday night, residents said. The troops have started advancing towards Loyesame, a Taliban stronghold, with heavy arms and tanks. Gunship helicopters provided security to the advancing contingents. Officials said the troops had established their control on all Taliban strongholds in Khar and were continuing their advance towards other areas controlled by militants.
Land: Meanwhile, the Frontier Corps (FC) troops secured control of a large area stretching from Alizai to Loyesame in Bajur Agency, APP reported. During the operation, the force overcame a number of pockets of resistance, said a press release by the FC. Many militants were killed in an exchange of fire with the FC troops at Rashkai. Militants' stongholds were also destroyed and at least 15 improvised explosive devices were destroyed on the main route connecting Khar with Nawagai.

Al Qaeda Pakistan chief Abu Haris was among 26 people killed in Monday's missile strike by the United States in Miranshah, Geo News quoted sources close to Taliban commander Jalaluddin Haqqani as saying on Tuesday.
According to the channel, Haqqani's four guards and two wives were also killed in the attack. Four missiles hit a madrassa run by Haqqani while three landed in populated areas. It is not known if Haqqani was present at the seminary at the time of the strike.
Haqqani, a close aide of Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar, has not been seen since the fall of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in 2001. The latest attack, in which three Al Qaeda leaders -- Hamza Arabi, Qasim Hamza and Musa Arabi -- were also killed, comes at a time when the US-led coalition troops are investigating last weekek's ground attack in Angoor Adda area of South Waziristan that claimed 20 lives.

The US military said soldiers had found numerous AK-47s, grenades and other military equipment during the raid in Khost.
Also on Tuesday, two rockets hit central Kabul, landing in an area near the main North Atlantic Treaty Organisation base and the presidential palace but causing no casualties or damage, said Afghanistan's Interior Ministry.

Al Arabiya's Iraq bureau chief, Jawad Hattab, escaped a car-bomb attack in Baghdad on Tuesday after his vehicle was booby-trapped.
"A time bomb was planted under the car," Najib Bencherif, head of the assignment department, told AlArabiya.net. According the Cheriff, Hattab's driver regularly checks under the car and noticed something strange so he called the police. "But the police did not show up on time," he added, since half an hour later the bomb exploded near Hattab's home in the Al-Salihyah district of central Baghdad.
Cherif said it appeared that the assailants were familiar with Hattab's routine and knew the car would be picking him up from his house at a given time. The Dubai-based satellite channel said Hattab and the driver were unharmed.
Just last week an assassination attempt on a Kurdish journalist at his home left his sister dead.
The Iraqi Journalism Freedom Observatory, the main organization for the defense of media workers' rights in Iraq, estimates that at least 235 media workers have been killed since the U.S.-led invasion began in March 2003.

Hamas security says its police have arrested two men from the rival Fatah in a car containing explosives.
The Hamas statement says the police also found batteries and a telephone detonating device in the car and the men were planning to set off a powerful car bomb.
The arrests were made late Tuesday near the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. Hamas identified one of the men as a former officer in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' elite guard. There was no comment from Fatah, which is led by Abbas.
The Islamic militant Hamas overran Gaza last year, expelling Fatah forces.

"We are still investigating and checking the type of grenade used," head of the Darussalam Special Detachment anti terror squad, Sutry Hamdani, was quoted as telling Indonesian news agency Antara in Aceh Besar on Tuesday.
An unidentified bomber reportedly bombed the house of Muzakkir Manaf, shattering the front window and damaging his car, a Nissan X-Trail 4x4. A witness, Tarmizi, said Manaf and his family were in Lhokseumawe, 270-kilometers away from Aceh, at the time of the attack.
Manaf is also the chairman of the Aceh Party. Aceh Party spokesman Adnan Beuransah said he did not know of any frictions rising between the party and other parties. "We truly regret the attack as it shows there are certain individuals unhappy with the peace. We will report the incident to the Regional Police, Interpeace, the European Union and the Communication and Coordination Forum (FKK)," he said.
GAM reached a landmark peace accord with the Indonesian government in mid-August 2005, ending a 30-year secessionist war in Aceh that killed an estimated 15,000 people. GAM members were elected to most of the political posts in local elections held last December. A spate of bombings in Banda Aceh in 2007 however raised fresh concern about political instability in the province.
