Abducted Chinese oil worker found alive in Sudan
The Chinese Embassy said Friday that a fourth Chinese oil worker has been found in Sudan after a hostage ordeal that left at least four colleagues dead and exposed security failings in the industry. Nine Chinese oil workers were abducted in Sudan's volatile South Kordofan state on October 18. Four bodies have since been retrieved.

Sudanese forces discovered the fourth man in the area where the hostage taking unfolded and preparations were being made to fly him to Khartoum on Friday, said Beijing's ambassador to the oil-rich African country. "The preliminary information that we have is that he does not have gunshot injuries. They told me he is ok - so, so. But I'm sure he needs very good care," ambassador Li Chengwen said. "We're trying to retrieve him today," he added.
We knew this was gonna happen, 'cuz we watch Jackie Chan movies. And one of the dead guys was the escapee's uncle.
The Sudanese military was not reachable for comment on Friday, the Muslim day of rest which brings most of Khartoum to a shut-down until evening.

The circumstances remain unclear surrounding both the discovery of the fourth worker and the four deaths, with discrepancies between both the official Chinese and Sudanese version of events.

Beijing spoke of a rescue attempt and diplomats say they "understood" that the hostages were caught in crossfire, but Sudan denies any confrontation, saying the abductors spotted a helicopter, panicked and started shooting. The three who were plucked alive from the wilds of South Kordofan last Tuesday had "escaped," Sudan said.

The government blamed Darfur rebels from the Justice and Equality Movement for the abductions, but local officials and diplomats pointed the finger at disaffected members of the Messeria tribe. The Messeria were blamed for abducting four Indian oil workers and their Sudanese driver in Heglig in South Kordofan last May. Two of the Indians escaped alive, one was released and the other is missing, presumed dead.

(SomaliNet) Sudanese security sources said two oil workers were killed and a third was kidnapped by unknown militants at an oil field in south Sudan on Wednesday. All the three were employees of a Yemeni petroleum company, the sources said.

The source added that the two killed men were Sudanese while the nationality of the third person had not been discovered.

Presidential palace among 3 suicide bombing targets
(SomaliNet) Police said the presidential palace was one of three targets in simultaneous suicide car bomb attacks on Wednesday in Hargeysa, the capital of the northern Somali breakaway state of Somaliland. "The office of the president was among the three positions targeted by terrorists," a senior police officer said by telephone from Hargeysa on condition of anonymity. "A senior officer in the office of the president was killed in the attack which was carried out by a suicide bomber," he said.

However, it was not immediately clear if Somaliland President Dahir Rayale Kahin was in his office at the time of the attack but officials said he was safe.

The United Nations Development Programme's compound and the Ethiopian embassy, all in the same neighbourhood, were also targeted. Two suicide car attacks targeted two anti-terrorism centres in Bossaso, the economic capital of the neighbouring breakaway state of Puntland, at almost the same time.

Pirates hijack Turkish freighter ship off Somali coast
(SomaliNet) Turkish freighter ship has been hijacked by pirates off the Somali coast, a Turkey's state-run news agency says.

The ship, Neslihan with 20 crew members on board, was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday, the Anatolia news agency says citing unnamed Turkish maritime authorities.

The agency says the ship was carrying iron ore from Canada to China.

Anatolia said Thursday that Turkey has asked NATO forces to help end the hijack.

Somalia: Authorities arrest Islamic cleric over deadly suicide attacks
(SomaliNet) Authorities have arrested an Islamic cleric suspected of involvement in a wave of suicide attacks that killed more than 20 people, a Somali official says.
We had this yesterday without much detail. This story doesn't have much more detail, but some...
The five seemingly coordinated attacks Wednesday occurred in the breakaway republic of Somaliland and in Somalia's Puntland region which have largely been spared the deadly violence seen in the country's south.

Muse Gelle Yusuf, a governor in Puntland, said local cleric Sheik Mohamed Ismail was arrested Wednesday and was being questioned.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts, but the U.S. says they appeared to have the markings of an al-Qaida attack.-

Bangladesh
Two suspected wings of Shahadat killed in RAB shootout
Two alleged close associates of top listed terrorist Shahadat ...
Who?
... were killed in a shootout with RAB near at Kalyanpur in the city early on Friday.
We have no idea where that is.
The deceased were identified as Biplob Ahmed alias Nayan, 22, son of late Mohammad Nizam, and Ruhul Amin Hawlader, 26, son of homeopathy physician Abdur Razzak.
The guy's named Biplob? That's a sentence in B-desh right there.
Both hailed from Barisal district. "Nayan and Ruhul were wanted on twelve systems in a number of criminal cases, including murder," a RAB official said.
So their mothers didn't love them.
Acting on a tip-off, ...
Mahmoud the Weasel strikes again ...
... a team of RAB-4 raided a shanty in front of Rizia Tower on Gabtali-Kalyanpur road to arrest the listed extortionists and recover firearms.
Notice that they never raid the Dhaka Hilton ...
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, ...
"Hark! My spider-sense is tingling!"
... the extortionists opened fire on them ...
and manage not to hit a darned thing
... triggering a gunfight at about 4:40am.
A little late in the morning for the RAB.
After a 20-minute long gunfight, ...
in which nothing was hit except our heroes
... RAB later found the bodies of the two suspected extortionists ...
right where they left them
... lying on the spot.
"Which spot?"
"That spot!"
They also recovered seven firearms and seven cocktails from the scene.
But no shutter-gun. Guess being named 'Biplob' isn't enough ...
RAB sources said the two deceased were the close aide of top listed extortionist Shahadat, now safely in India, and they had an active involvement in the killing of Sohag Paribahan counterman Parvez who was gunned down in Kalyanpur area on Sept 11. The gang used to collect toll from the country's transport sector as per the direction of Shahadat, according to the source.

But Beauty Begum, mother of Biplob, ...
Biplob has a mother named 'Beauty'? This is getting weird ...
... denied the allegation and said that RAB members detained his son from WASA slum in Shewrapara on Oct 6 while he along with his friends were playing cards.
Pro'ly didn't shuffle the deck properly ...
She alleged that police and RAB men did not give any information about the arrest of Biplop when they contact with them.
What did you want to know, other than where to pick up the body?
"The allegation against Biplop is false and he was an innocent man," she said.
"My son was a good boy, even if we did name him Biplob!"
Ruhul's family also denied the allegation against Ruhul, made by RAB.
"No, no, certainly not!"

The official says the U.S. now has evidence that Khalid Habib was killed in an unmanned air strike two weeks ago in the South Waziristan region of Pakistan. Until now, there had been no official confirmation of reports of Habib's death from local militants in the area.

"He was the person responsible for planning and organizing attacks in the Pakistan and overseas, including the U.S.," the senior official said. "This was a really big deal that has not received much attention."

Considered the number four leader of al Qaeda, Habib was a long-time associate close to both Osama bin Laden and Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Habib had been reported killed by Pakistani officials several times over the last few years, only to re-emerge at the center of what U.S. official say is the al Qaeda operational command.

Official says al-Masri killed in Pakistan strike
A wanted Egyptian Al-Qaeda operative who has appeared in some of the terror network's videos was killed in a suspected US missile strike in Pakistan, a security official said Saturday. Abu Jihad al-Masri was among several rebels killed when two missiles fired by a spy drone hit a truck in the North Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan on Friday night, the senior official said.

The United States has offered a one million dollar reward for the death or capture of Al-Masri, according to the Rewards for Justice website run by the US State Department.

Rewards For Justice: Abu Jihad al Masri
Abu Jihad al-Masri operates out of Iran and is in charge of al-Qa'ida media and propaganda. He may also be the Chief of External Operations for al-Qa'ida.

LA Times: Abu Ubaida al Masri
His alias is Abu Ubaida al Masri. Hardly anyone has heard of him outside a select circle of anti-terrorism officials and Islamic militants. But as chief of external operations for Al Qaeda, investigators say, he has one of the most dangerous – and endangered – jobs in international terrorism.

He has overseen the major plots that the network needs to stay viable, investigators say: the London transportation bombings in 2005, a foiled transatlantic “spectacular” aimed at U.S.-bound planes in 2006, and an aborted plot in this serene Scandinavian capital last fall.

#7  So it looks to me like this recently departed Jihad al-Masri took over from the deceased Abu Ubaida.

From this Apr 2007 NYT article on the new generation AQ leadership: Qaeda Is Seen as Restoring Leadership

See the 5 leaders. Of them
Abu Jihad - just killed (probably parking w/ lover)
Abu Ubaida - dead.
Khalid Habib - killed in truck by Predator Oct 16, 2008
Abdul Hadi al-Iraqi - Captured. In Gitmo.
Atiyah Abd al-Rahman - Alive. Emissary to Iran

4 out of 5. And the fifth is untouchable for the moment. Some people have been working hard and working smart. A pizza for those guys and gals if I knew where to send it.

Since Abu U keeled over from the Hepatitis, I hope many more will suddenly expire from the Hep. A good chance given those people's predilection for the Thursday night rump pump.

Suspected US missile strike kills 20 in Pakistan
A mid-level al-Qaeda leader, identified as an Iraqi, was among up to 20 people killed on Friday in a suspected missile strike by U.S. spy drones in northwest Pakistan, a Pakistani intelligence official said.

The intelligence official identified the al-Qaeda leader as Abu Akash and said he was believed to have been Iraqi. "He is a mid-level al-Qaeda man who was leading a high-profile life in Mir Wali," said the official, who declined to be identified, referring to the second biggest town in the North Waziristan region on the Afghan border. Local residents said the strike hit the house of a Pakistani tribesman named Amanullah Dawar.

Two missiles were involved in the strike, which destroyed a vehicle and a house in North Waziristan tribal region that is a known hub of al-Qaeda and Taliban militants on the area bordering Afghanistan.

The attack came just two days after Pakistan, a key ally in the U.S.-led "war on terrorism", summoned Washington's ambassador to Islamabad to receive a strong protest over a number of similar strikes.

Sunday's strike killed senior Taliban commander Haji Omar Khan, a lieutenant of veteran Afghan Taliban chieftain and former anti-Soviet fighter Jalaluddin Haqqani. It was the 17th such strike in the past 10 weeks, according to an AFP tally. All of them have been blamed on U.S.-led coalition forces or CIA drones based in neighboring Afghanistan.

The attacks have sharply raised tensions between Washington and nuclear-armed Pakistan. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has promised zero tolerance against violations of his country's sovereignty. The attacks have also become an election issue in the U.S. presidential campaign.

US arrests 39 Iranian-funded 'criminals' in Iraq
The U.S. military said on Friday it had arrested 39 Iranian-sponsored "criminals" in Iraq this month and had seized some $500,000 meant to fund militancy in the war-wracked country.

"This month alone, coalition forces apprehended 39 Iranian-sponsored criminals and seized nearly $500,000 in funding, supporting terrorism in Iraq," the military said in a statement. "Iraqi and coalition forces are working together to prevent Iranian lethal aid from endangering Iraqi people."
Iraqis might want to think about what it means if we have no status agreement on January 1st, and these jokers get to run free ...
It said one of those arrested was a key member of the Iranian-sponsored Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq criminal network, who was captured on Friday in Baghdad. The detainee is an alleged financier responsible for funding militant operations against Iraqi and U.S. forces, the statement added.

The U.S. military regularly and correctly accuses Iranian-linked groups of arming, funding and training Iraqi militants to fight U.S. forces in the country.

Tehran denies the charges.

'Insurgents' blow up Baghdad water pipeline
BAGHDAD - Insurgents have blown up a water pipeline in Baghdad's Sunni bastion of Adhamiyah, disrupting supply of potable water to hundreds of thousands of residents, the US military said Friday. The attack on the pipeline took place late Thursday, it said in a statement.

'The powerful explosion created an 18-inch (45-centimetre) hole in the pipe' which supplies water to residents of Adhamiyah, Rusafa and Karrada districts of Baghdad, the statement said. The bomb comprised 20 pounds (nine kilograms) of homemade explosives.

An Iraqi security official said insurgents had arrived by car at the pipeline at around 11 pm (2000 GMT) Thursday. 'They parked the car near the pipeline, saying it had a mechanical failure and they were repairing it. It seems they planted the bomb around this time. Soon they left and later an explosion rocked the pipeline,' the official said. He said it could take 48 hours for the pipeline to be repaired.

Bomb explodes at Gaza police station, killing one
A Hamas policeman was killed and three others were wounded when an explosive device went off in a police station in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, a spokesman for the force said.

Hamas police spokesman Islam Shahwan said the device was found earlier in the day in the Hamas-controlled territory and was taken to the police station to be dismantled. While security men were taking the bomb apart, it exploded, causing several secondary blasts, Shahwan said.

An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Gaza's Islamist rulers has been in place since June. But internal tensions, between Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's secular Fatah faction, remain high. Hamas seized control of the coastal strip last year after routing Abbas's forces.

It was not immediately clear where the explosive device was found and why it had been taken inside the police station instead of being detonated outside.

Gaza militants fire rockets at Israeli army patrol
JERUSALEM- Militants in the Gaza Strip on Friday fired two anti-tank rockets at an Israeli army patrol along Gaza's security fence, causing no damage, the army said, but again shaking a fragile truce.
"Two anti-tank missiles were fired at an IDF (army) patrol on the security fence in southern Gaza Strip, causing no casualties or damage," a spokeswoman said.

The attack threatened a fragile June 19 truce brokered by Egypt between the Jewish state and Gaza's ruling Islamist Hamas movement after months of deadly violence in and around the territory.
