Eleven Taliban were killed during heavy fighting between Taliban and security forces in Afghanistan's remote northwest area on Wednesday, local authorities said.
Two Afghan soldiers also died in a Taliban suicide attack, the authorities added. About 300 Taliban attacked a government district centre in Badghis province late on Tuesday, sparking hours of fighting, police said.
"There were no casualties to police forces and civilians," provincial police chief Muhammad Ayoub Niazyar told reporters. "At least 11 Taliban have been killed and 20 wounded," he said.
A Taliban spokesman, Yousuf Ahmadi, said he knew nothing about the fighting, and there was no way to confirm independently what had happened. The insurgent group, which was ousted from government during the 2001 US-led invasion, instead claimed a suicide bombing in the western city of Herat that killed two Afghan soldiers heading to work, the Defence Ministry said. Another three soldiers were wounded when the attacker rammed a bomb-filled vehicle into an Afghan army convoy, the ministry added.
Elsewhere, a suicide bomber detonated explosives strapped to his body at a wedding in the northern town of Baghlan, wounding five children and a police commander, local police said. Last year was the deadliest ever in the Taliban insurgency. An independent Afghan rights group said nearly 4,000 civilians had been killed in the violence last year, more than two-thirds in rebel attacks and about 1,100 by foreign forces.

(AKI) - The Yemeni army on Tuesday surrounded a militant hideout in the country's southeast, where a German contractor was reportedly being held hostage with two Yemenis. The three men were abducted on Sunday.
The German captive is a pipeline engineer for Amecspie Hawk, a sub-contractor of the Yemen Natural Gas Company.
Officials say security forces have surrounded a remote mountain village called Khubar Lagmoush in the south-eastern province of Shabwa where the hostages are believed to be held.
Local governor Ali Hasan al-Ahmadi said the standoff may end by the end of the day.
The army also said that it did not intend to carry out an armed raid, so as not to endanger the life of the hostages and hoped to obtain their release without violence.
The abductors are said to be demanding the release of a tribesman accused of murder in 1989.
Kidnapping is a common strategy among tribes in Yemen, who use hostages as levers to extract money or make demands from the government. Most have been released unharmed.

President Barack Obama began overhauling U.S. treatment of terror suspects Thursday, signing orders to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center, shut down secret overseas CIA prisons, review military war crimes trials and ban the harshest interrogation methods.
With his action, Obama started changing how the United States prosecutes and questions al-Qaida, Taliban or other foreign fighters who pose a threat to Americans -- and overhauling America's image abroad, battered by accusations of the use of torture and the indefinite detention of suspects at the Guantanamo prison in Cuba.
And battered repeatedly by the Dhimmicrats and the MSM ...
"The message that we are sending the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism and we are going to do so vigilantly and we are going to do so effectively and we are going to do so in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals," the president said.
No, it means that we'll be as squeamish as progressive Europeans in the future. In the past we didn't have a problem dealing with terrorists and thugs when our security was threatened. We were Jacksonian: we'd respect an enemy that followed the rules of war but would show no quarter to an enemy that didn't. Bambi doesn't understand that and that's why he's following the advise of 'progressives', who are equally squeamish. The Bambi administration can't or won't make the distinction between lawful versus unlawful enemy combatants. That's the first principle and all their actions will flow from that distinction.
The centerpiece order would close the much-maligned Guantanamo facility within a year, a complicated process with many unanswered questions that was nonetheless a key campaign promise of Obama's. The administration already has suspended trials for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo for 120 days pending a review of the military tribunals.
With the questions about who we'll release, who we'll keep and where we'll keep them, who we'll try and who we'll make disappear, it should be an interesting year. The Dhimmicrats and MSM like to pretend that George Bush never considered these issues, that Gitmo just sprang forth from Cheney's brain. They're going to recognize what a few adult Democrats (e.g., Jane Harmon) knew all along: it's a damned difficult issue.
In the other actions, Obama:
_Created a task force to recommend policies on handling terror suspects who are detained in the future. Specifically, the group would look at where those detainees should be housed since Guantanamo is closing.
Good luck with that. Some we've released to the field have come back to fight and kill Americans. Some we'd otherwise like to release are wanted men in their own countries, countries that don't follow the same gentle European rules for handling terrorists. And some are people no one wants.
_Required all U.S. personnel to follow the U.S. Army Field Manual while interrogating detainees. The manual explicitly prohibits threats, coercion, physical abuse and waterboarding, a technique that creates the sensation of drowning and has been termed a form of torture by critics. However, a Capitol Hill aide says that the administration also is planning a study of more aggressive interrogation methods that could be added to the Army manual -- which would create a significant loophole to Obama's action Thursday.
Bet that the military will fight that. They want the Field Manual left alone, I gather, precisely because they're not the CIA.
"We believe that the Army Field Manual reflects the best judgment of our military, that we can abide by a rule that says we don't torture, but that we can still effectively obtain the intelligence that we need," Obama said. He said his action reflects an understanding that "we are willing to observe core standards of conduct, not just when it's easy, but also when it's hard."
A task force will study whether other interrogation guidelines -- beyond what's spelled out in the Army manual -- are necessary for intelligence professionals in dealing with terror suspects.
But an Obama administration official said that provision should not be considered a loophole that will allow controversial "enhanced interrogation techniques" to be re-introduced. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to speak candidly about the administration's thinking.

The order also orders the CIA to close all its existing detention facilities abroad for terror suspects -- and prohibits those prisons from being used in the future. The agency has used those secret "black site" prisons around the world to question terror suspects.
So we'll hand over Bagram to the Afghan government, the camps in Iraq to the Iraqi government, etc. How is that an improvement unless the goal is to leave one's own hands squeaky clean?
_Directed the Justice Department to review the case of Qatar native Ali al-Marri, who is the only enemy combatant currently being held on U.S. soil. The directive will ask the high court for a stay in al-Marri's appeals case while the review is ongoing. The government says al-Marri is an al-Qaida sleeper agent.

An estimated 245 men are being held at the U.S. naval base in Cuba, most of whom have been detained for years without being charged with a crime.
Because they're not criminals, they're terrorists. We're not obligated to extend to terrorists the rights that criminals have within the United States.
Among the sticky issues the Obama administration has to resolve are where to put those detainees -- whether back in their home countries or at other federal detention centers -- and how to prosecute some of them for war crimes.
"We intend to win this fight. We're going to win it on our terms," Obama said as he signed three executive orders and a presidential directive.
The administration official said Obama's government will not transfer detainees to countries that will mistreat them, including their own home country.
So you're back to the question, "and now what do you do with them?" And voting 'present' is not an option.
In his first Oval Office signing ceremony, Obama was surrounded by retired senior military leaders. He described them as outstanding Americans who have defended the country -- and its ideals.
I think we're going to see a lot more cheap stunts like this. I recall a time when retired military didn't let themselves be used by the politicians ...

America's image abroad never suffered because of accusations of torture, because those "abroad" nations don't give a rat's ass about torture. Most of them use torture routinely. The Euro's too - their secret services use torture but you'll never read about it anywhere. Our image didn't suffer, the Euro's, Muzzies, assorted thug regimes, and the NYT chose to portray that as being the case as a method of propagandizing against the Bush administration, and many of their propagandized masses followed suit.
This is just kicking the can down the road for a year. All he has done is appease his more virulent supporters with lip service and kick the can down the road a year. In a year there will be other, more pressing crises. Barry will find out who's really in there and why. No one, or none of his supporters, will remember Gitmo, because it will be an inconvenient truth, flushed down the memory hole. And he'll need all the cells in Gitmo to hold the prisoners we take in our retreat from Afghanistan so that we have somebody to trade, at least in his mind, for the POWs.

So Obama signs a symbolic order to close GITMO. But when asked about an actual plan on how to do it he says Dont worry Im going to create a Task Force to figure that out. He then signs yet another symbolic order stating that all terrorist interrogations will be conducted strictly by Army Field Manual standards. But the Intelligence community tells him its a horrible idea and he risks a revolt in his first week in office. Hey stay cool spooky dudes hes going to create a Study of more aggressive interrogation methods that could be added later.

I think all of the legalese the Left spouts at the war on terrorism is a state of denial of the fact that we have about 18 million nut jobs out there that want to kill us strictly because we exist and not because of anything we have done or belief.
I hope he gets a grip on it quickly because any of the old Jamie Gorelick law enforcement mumbo jumbo will get a large chunk of our population killed.

Militants blew up another school in the troubled Pakistan's Swat valley on Thursday, sparking fresh concerns over the briskly security situation in Pakistan's northwestern region.
The Taliban militants continued their attacks on schools on Thursday and destroyed another school in Qambar area of the Swat valley of North West Frontier Province, private Geo TV channel quoted sources as saying. Officials said that Taliban have destroyed over 150 schools, mostly girls' schools, in Swat valley in several months.
Pakistan's parliament on Tuesday adopted a resolution, condemning Taliban's burning of schools and ban on girls' education. The resolution, moved by Information Minister Sherry Rehman, said Taliban's activity is against Islam and such trend is against the country's stability.
Sherry Rehman said on Sunday that the girls' schools will be reopened on March 1 after winter break, but the Swat Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said that schools will be allowed to open after Shariah system is introduced in Swat.
Rumours about the killing of Taliban commander Omar Khalid in a military strike in Mohmand Agency were rife on Wednesday, but Taliban sources rejected the reports, calling them baseless. Reports said commander Abdul Ali, alias Omar Khalid, was killed in last night's military offensive in Mohmand Agency, while his second-in-command Shakil had been injured. Locals told Daily Times that Omar Khalid's house was destroyed in the operation while he was inside.
However, a Taliban commander said Omar Khalid was alive. "Omar Khalid is alive and we shall present him before the media in a day or two," a Taliban commander told Daily Times over telephone.
Meanwhile, security forces on Wednesday arrested seven terrorists, including a senior Al Qaeda operative allegedly wanted in connection with the 2005 attacks on London, catching them off guard in a raid in Peshawar, AFP reported.
The forces arrested the Taliban after storming their hideout, a senior security official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The official named the Al Qaeda operative allegedly wanted for the July 7, 2005 suicide bombings in London, as Zabi Ul Taifi, an Arab national.
Local officials confirmed the arrests, saying American investigators were present at the time of the operation. "He's been arrested in Peshawar this morning," the first security official said. "It was a well-planned raid carried out against a militant den. The culprits were caught off guard and captured without resistance," the official said.

Based on information provided by an arrested LeT militant Imtiyaz Ahmed alias Saidullah, security forces conducted a search in forest area of Puneja in Bhaderwah tehsil of Doda district yesterday and busted a concrete hideout, they said.
Two Aircel sim cards, 40 kgs of ration, four blankets, a kerosene stove and a communication set were recovered from the hideout.

A CB-CID special investigation team has arrested an Al Umma hardliner who had been evading arrest for the last two years, from Chennai airport. SIT officials rushed to the airport after immigration authorities tipped them off about the arrival of M M Haroon Ismail (35) by a Thai Airlines flight from Bangkok.
Ismail is an accused in the murder of Thangam Muthukrishnan, wife of Muthukrishnan, district secretary of Hindu Munnani, in Nagore in 1995. He was also accused in an attempt to murder case after sending a letter bomb to assassinate the BJP district organizer in Myladuthurai in the same year.
According to the police, Haroon Ismail and another Al Umma hardliner, Abubacker Siddique alias Kakka, who is still absconding, Rifayee of Karaikal, Raja Hussein of Madurai, Zahir Hussein and Zubeir of Coimbatore had sent a letter bomb to the address of Muthukrishnan in Nagore to kill him. However, Muthukrishnan was not in town when the letter bomb was delivered and his wife Thangam Muthukrishnan, who opened the parcel, was killed in the explosion.
Jeyaveerapandian, the then Myladuthurai BJP district organizer also received a similar letter bomb, but the police defused it. Police arrested all the accused except Abubacker Siddique and filed the chargesheet in both the cases in 1997. Abubacker Siddique is still absconding and the government has announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head.
Ismail came out on bail in 1996 and appeared before the investigation agency as per court directions till 2005. However, he has been absconding since 2005. Later, it came to light that he had escaped to Dubai using his original passport.
Sources said the Thanjavur police, which arrested him, had not confiscated his passport, which ultimately helped him flee the country. CB-CID then intimated Interpol and immigration authorities and put him in the wanted list. Immigration authorities were also given the photograph of the accused. This helped when he landed in Chennai late on Monday night.
His passport will expire in March and he came down to renew it. Moreover, his mother, who stood surety for his bail was summoned to appear before the Poonamallee special court on Wednesday. So far we have no news about any other reason for his visit to the city, a senior police officer said. Ismail was later produced before the magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

As for "55 million cluster bombs", the average cluster bomb contains 36 individual weapons. that would require 1,527,777 bombs be dropped. At a maximum of eight bombs per sortie, that means 190,000 sorties. Only a small portion of all sorties are flown with cluster munitions. Even with half of them being flown with cluster munitions, it would require 400,000 sorties be flown to drop 55 million cluster bombs. That would require 5000 aircraft flying one sortie (8 bombs per sortie), or 500 aircraft flying 10 sorties, or 50 aircraft flying 100 sorties. The average pilot during the Vietnam war flew about 300 sorties during a one-year tour. The number in Iraq and Afghanistan have been significantly smaller, as the target data base was smaller, and the targets usually didn't survive a strike, as they did in Veitnam. Methinks DPI needs to put in some additional calculator time. (Since 80% of all cluster munitions explode, the number of "live" weapons that COULD exist in Iraq, according to DPI, is 11 million. That's STILL way too high a number. If that number were true, you'd hear of people being killed every day, not just once in a while).

Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi army forces on Wednesday arrested 13 wanted persons, including three suicide bombers, west of Mosul city. "Three suicide bombers wearing explosives belts were arrested near al-Hajj Ali village, al-Qayara district (60 km south of Mosul city)," a source from Ninewa's Operation Command told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. Earlier this week, a suicide bomber detonated himself inside the guesthouse of the deputy head of the Iraqi National Dialogue Front (NDF), Hassan al-Zaidan, in al-Qayara district, killing the parliamentarian and wounding two policemen. Strict security measures are currently in place in al-Hajj Ali village, where a wake is currently being held.

(AKI) - Palestinian medical sources said a farmer was shot dead by Israeli forces on Tuesday, two days after the ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant factions took effect in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian farmer was killed east of the Jabalya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, said director of emergency and ambulance services at the Palestinian Health Ministry, Muawiya Hassanain, quoted by Palestinian news agency Maan. The farmer's death is the second Palestinian death since the ceasefire was declared on Sunday. On Monday, a 20-year-old Palestinian was killed in the south of Gaza, near the town of Khan Younis, while Israeli naval gunships were reported to have opened fire against the coastal territory.
Two children aged 10 and 11 were also killed on Tuesday when they were playing with an unexploded bomb left behind by Israeli forces east of Gaza City.
Meanwhile, Israeli troops reportedly came under fire near the Kissufim border crossing and in the centre of the Gaza Strip on the same day as United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon visited the region.
Ban met Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert and later visited war-torn Gaza and the southern Israeli town of Sderot, where he called Hamas' rocket fire against Israel "appalling and unacceptable." He also voiced his shock and anger at the devastation caused by Israel's military offensive in the Hamas-controlled territory. "I have seen only a fraction of the destruction. This is shocking and alarming," Ban said.
Ban condemned Israel's "excessive use" of force in Gaza,and pledged aid for Palestinians after Israeli attacks killed 1,300 and left thousands homeless.

The Islamist Palestinian group Hamas said on Wednesday it had begun reasserting control in the Gaza Strip and rounding up suspected collaborators with Israel, drawing accusations from the rival Fatah group that its members were being targeted.
"The internal security service was instructed to track collaborators and hit them hard," said Ehab al-Ghsain, spokesman of the Hamas Interior Ministry, without singling out Fatah members by name. "They arrested dozens of collaborators who attempted to strike the resistance by giving information to the occupation about the fighters," he said, using a Hamas term for Israel, whose 22-day offensive devastated the Gaza Strip.
Earlier this month, Haaretz correspondent Amira Hass first reported the secret executions of dozens of Gazans consider by Hamas to be "collaborators" with the enemy. Hamas and Fatah supporters have traded accusations in Arab media that Fatah collaborated with Israel in the hope it could return to power in the Gaza Strip and that Hamas provoked the Israeli invasion by firing rockets into southern Israel.
Hamas, an Islamist group that won the 2006 Palestinian election, violently seized the coastal enclave from Fatah, led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in 2007.
A statement issued by Fatah in Gaza said that since fighting between Israel and Gaza militants ended - Hamas and Israel put separate ceasefires into effect on Sunday - Hamas militias had carried out a number of attacks against Fatah members. These attacks, according to the statement, included "shooting at the feet of Fatah members, brutal crimes of execution and throwing the bodies in the rubble of destruction." Fatah appealed to Abbas' Palestinian Authority to intervene.
Ghsain denied the allegations but said authorities had begun tracking down suspected "collaborators" with Israel. "These are familiar lies and false allegations from Fatah and the forces of sedition," he said.

.(AKI) - Israel said on Wednesday it had completed its troop withdrawal from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, but forces were on high alert as the fragile ceasefire remained in place . "As of this morning, the last of the Israel Defense Forces soldiers have left the Gaza Strip and the forces have deployed outside of Gaza and are prepared for any occurrences," an army spokesman said.
Israel had pulled out most of its security forces before the new American president, Barack Obama, was inaugurated in Washington on Tuesday, a move analysts regarded as an attempt to avoid tension with the new administration.
Israeli media reported that Palestinian gunmen opened fire on Israeli troops in two separate incidents in Gaza on Tuesday, and several mortar shells were also fired at Israel. No injuries or damage were reported in any of the attacks.
On Monday Palestinian medical sources said a 20-year-old was killed by Israeli forces near the town of Khan Younis, while a farmer was reportedly shot dead by Israeli soldiers in northern Gaza on Tuesday.
The Jerusalem Post newspaper reported on Wednesday Israeli aircraft had bombed a mortar launcher in the Gaza Strip that had been used hours earlier to fire some eight mortar shells into the Negev, putting the shaky ceasefire at risk. It was the first air strike against Gaza since Israel's unilateral ceasefire declaration on Saturday and the ceasefire declared by Palestinian factions on Sunday.

Unidentified gunmen have shot dead two Muslim men in Thailand's troubled deep south, the latest attacks in a raging jihad separatist insurgency, police said Thursday.
Snipers hiding in bushes killed a district chief as he was walking his cattle home in restive Pattani province late Wednesday, said police. Two hours later, also in Pattani, at least two armed men stormed into a grocery store and shot dead the owner, they said.
(AKI) - The International Committee of the Red Cross says it has had no contact in the past 24 hours with its three aid workers who were kidnapped in the Philippines last week . The Red Cross workers, who include an Italian, Swiss and a Filipino, had previously made telephone contact with the ICRC several times since they were abducted on the southern island of Jolo last Thursday.
The ICRC's president, Richard Gordon, said on Wednesday contact had stopped.
Experts said the lack of communication could mean the abductors are moving from the area in order to flee raids by police and security services.
The three, Italian citizen Eugenio Vagni, Swiss national Andreas Notter and Filipino Mary Jean Lacaba were abducted on Thursday after visiting a local prison.
The Philippines government has appealed to the Swiss and Italian governments not to pay any ransom for the workers' release.
At least 1,000 marines and police are believed to be involved in the search for the captives.
The prime suspect in the latest kidnapping, Abu Sayyaf, has a long-running goal to establish a Muslim 'caliphate' in the southern Philippines. Over one thousand militants are believed to have joined the group since its foundation in the 1990s by a Muslim cleric.

The Sri Lankan military on Wednesday announced an "expanded safe zone" in the Mullathivu district, the last stronghold of the LTTE, to enable civilians to move to government-controlled territory.
Appealing to civilians in Mullathivu to move towards the expanded safe zone, the military released details of the areas earmarked for the purpose. It is not immediately clear how the government intends to reach the message to the citizens.
Separately, Senior Advisor to President and parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa said the government was taking additional steps to provide suitable facilities to accommodate the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) coming to government-held areas in increasing numbers.
He held a top-level meeting to review the arrangements to accommodate the displaced.

Iranian forces have tightened security along the country's borders in recent months, killing some 120 insurgents and arresting many others.
Border police commander, Ebrahim Karimi, said Wednesday that security clampdowns along the country's border has claimed the lives of 120 rebels and 19 police members in less than a year.
"The past nine months saw an increase in efforts against rebels who threaten national security by engaging in arms dealing and drug trafficking," said the Iranian colonel.
The Islamic Republic has taken new security measures in its border provinces, following terrorist attacks on its eastern and Western borders.
On its eastern borders, the Pakistan-based Jundullah terrorist organization is responsible for orchestrating cross-border attacks on Iranian officials. The terrorists kidnap the officials and 'execute' them on camera.
Last June Jundullah terrorists abducted 16 Iranian police officers at a checkpoint in the southeastern city of Saravan in Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan Province. The hostages were reportedly taken to Pakistan where they faced execution in early December.
To the East, meanwhile, Iran faces security threats from the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK) -- an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Funded by the US and Israel, PJAK carries out acts of sabotage against the Iranian government in a bid to establish an independent Kurdish state.
At least five Iranian security officials were killed by PJAK militants in the month of October, prompting border authorities to tighten securities on the borderline.
The Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO), which identifies itself as a Marxist-Islamist guerilla army, is also another anti-Iran terrorist group, which is notorious for plotting a regime change as well as a slew of assassinations inside the Islamic Republic.

There's one that periodically causes the number of connections to shoot up, but I haven't isolated it yet. Thought I had it under control when I went to bed last night, but obviously I didn't.
Virtually all the originating points have been Latin America: Messico, Venezuela, Peru, Argentina ranges have been banned so far, other than the usual background noise of Chinamen. I'm guessing the Mighty Venezuelans are exercising their IT forces.
I'll keep working on it as I can today. Either Bad and I will find them and bounce them, or they'll give up and go away. Or they'll take over Rantburg, change my password so I'm locked out, and put up Socialist realism-type painted pictures of Hugo smiting the evil Bush while incorporating us into their bot net.

Bus drivers in northwest Pakistan have begun removing audio and video equipment from their vehicles after Taliban militants threatened suicide attacks against those who played music or movies for their passengers, said an industry official on Tuesday.
