#3  Easy for Milliband to say - he doesn't have to live in Afghanistan. Someone needs to use a cluebat to his head, to smarten him up a bit.

Afghanistan
'Bits of burka' found at bomb site
TWO children were killed when a suicide attacker believed to have been a woman blew herself up in a crowded area of western Herat city this morning, a senior police official said.

A 10-year-old boy and a girl aged seven were killed in the attack. Another young girl, a woman and an elderly man were wounded in the attack, said Ikramuddin Yarwar, police commander in western Afghanistan.

He said pieces of blue cloth that looked like they had been part of a burka, the all-covering article of clothing worn by many Afghan women, had been scattered around the site of the blast.

"Some pieces of burka were seen at the site, so we are investigating if the attack was committed by a woman," he said.

#6  Or they could be doing in Afghanistan what they started doing in Iraq which was to rape and drug young women to the point where they felt like they had no choice but to strap on the bomb. O, brave lions of Islam, it sure is a funny kind of a war you fight, doing this kind of thing to your own people and blaming it on us.

Bangladesh
Shootouts kill 2 criminals
[Bangla Daily Star] An alleged criminal was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion in the city's Mirpur area while an unidentified snatcher was killed in a 'shootout' with police in Chawgachha of Jessore early yesterday.
RAB is getting bold: we've actually heard of these places ...
In Mirpur, Mohammad Ali, 25, an associate of top terror Shahor Ali, died in a gunfight with Rab-4 near Mirpur Outer Stadium around 2:45am.
He could beat Smokin' Joe Frazier but couldn't escape the RAB ...
Rab sources said some suspected persons being challenged by Rab opened fire at the law-enforcers ...
which as usual leads to
... who also retaliated with gunshots in the stadium area.
RAB wins the biathlon ...
Mohammad Ali died on the spot.

However, other associates of Mohammad Ali fled the scene at one stage of the gunfight leaving a pistol with three bullets, a knife and Tk 23,440 in cash on the scene.
As if they were never there in the stadium in the first place ...
According to Rab, Shahor Ali also was killed in another shootout with Rab in Mirpur on September 12.
Rolling up the network one encounter at a time ...
Mohammad Ali was one of the accused in the attack on Rab Major Khandakar Golam Sarwar and snatching a criminal from Rab custody in Mirpur on September 13.
So he was one of the broad daylight snatchers? Surprised it took the RAB this long but perhaps they were just enjoying the 'suspense' ...
ASP Kaniz Hossain of Rab-4 said the gunfight took place when the elite force members were conducting a block raid in the area.
Just happened to come across Ali, and just happened to dump him in the endzone of the stadium. Jimmy Hoffa would be proud ...
A correspondent from Jessore reports: An unidentified mugger was killed in gunfight with police while fleeing after robbing a passenger-carrying human hauler on Jessore-Chawgachha road at about 2:00am.

"On information, we chased the gang members who hurled bombs forcing us to fire back," said a police official.
I generally duck behind a building when someone throws a bomb at me ...
He added that other criminals however managed to flee the scene. A case was filed with Chawgachha police station in this regard.

Indian police kill 24 Maoists in gun battle
[Dawn] At least 24 Maoist rebels and one paramilitary soldier were killed in a gun battle in India's insurgency-riddled Chhattisgarh state on Friday, police said.

Chhattisgarh state inspector general of police R.K. Vij said police and paramilitary troopers launched a clearing operation in Dantewada district on Thursday. As the soldiers closed in on a rebel-infested area early Friday, a gunbattle broke out killing the rebels.

Hundreds of police and special forces encircled more than 100 heavily armed Maoists around a rebel stronghold, added Girdhari Nayak, additional director general of police in Chhattisgarh. 'The casualty figure is not less than two dozen. We have so far recovered 10 bodies,' Nayak said. Police said a heavy exchange of gunfire was still under way in a forest, 450 km (280 miles) from the state capital, Raipur.

Thousands have been killed in the Maoist insurgency which began in the late 1960s and which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described as one of the gravest home-grown threats to India's internal security.

This week, Singh told India's police chiefs that a campaign against the rebels had failed to produce results and that rebel violence was on the rise in many states.

The rebels have been demanding land and jobs for agricultural laborers and the poor. They have increased attacks on railways, power and telecommunication networks to halt economic development, officials say. They say they are inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong.

Extremist group claims responsibility for deadly suicide attack in Pakistan
(Xinhua) -- An extremist group has claimed responsibility for Friday's deadly suicide car bomb attack in northwestern Pakistan, in which at least 33 people were killed, a police officer said.

A spokesman for the extremist group "Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al-Alami", Usman Haider phoned media organizations that the attack was a revenge of the killing of a cleric Maulana Amin, who was killed in an air strike by the Pakistani forces a few months ago.

According to police officer Ali Hasan, a bomber rammed his explosive-filled vehicle with a crowded roadside market in Kohat district at 11 a.m. on Friday, killing 33 people and causing huge destruction to buildings.

Hasan said that many shops on both sides of the road collapsed at Kacha Pakha bazaar, some 25 kilometers from Kohat city, and a large number of people were trapped in the buildings.

The police officer said that 36 other persons were injured and several of them are in critical condition.

Ambulances were sent to the blast site to shift the injured to Kohat city as there is no hospital in the area where the blast had happened, officials said.

Officials said that troops were also sent to the area to help the local authorities in relief activities, and heavy machinery was sent to the site to remove debris of the destroyed buildings.

Witnesses said that a large number of people were at the markets ahead of the Muslim Eid festival when the bomber exploded his bomb.

People traveling to other areas also take buses and coaches from Kacha Pakha area, and some of them were caught in the attack, police said.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the blast in Kohat, saying that the government would leave no stone unturned to find the culprits and give them severe punishment under the law.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani also condemned the suicide blast and expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in the incident.

The prime minister termed the attack as a cowardly act of terrorism and expressed the government's determination to stamp out the menace of terrorism and militancy from the country.

The prime minister asked the concerned authorities to carry out inquiry into the incident and ensure best medical facilities to the injured.

Iraq
Iraq market explosion kills 7 near Baghdad
[Iran Press TV Latest] A car bomb attack has hit the town of Mahmudiyah just outside the Iraqi capital, killing seven people and leaving another 21 wounded.

The explosion occurred at around 6:00 pm (1500 GMT) in a popular market crowded by people who were shopping for food to break the fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The town of Mahmudiya, 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Baghdad, is located within the so-called 'Triangle of Death' where sectarian tensions hiked in 2006 and 2007 in the worst such violence in the aftermath of Iraq's occupation by the US and its allies in 2003.

Earlier in September, two roadside bombs there killed at least two people and wounded 10 others.

Evening gatherings in Ramadan have been a frequent target of terrorist cells associated with al-Qaeda in the past, but Iraq has seen a fall in bombing casualties this month.

Palestinian teen killed as Gaza smuggling tunnel collapses
Ma'an/Agencies -- A Palestinian was killed when a smuggling tunnel collapsed underneath the Gaza-Egypt border on Friday afternoon.

Mustafa Salehea, 19, was killed when the tunnel collapsed, according to Muawiya Hassanein, the director of emergency services in Gaza. He told AFP news agency that the collapse was an accident.

Witnesses in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, said they heard an explosion in the area where the tunnels are located.

The tunnels represent a lifeline for 1.5 million Palestinians who have lived under an Israeli-imposed blockade since June 2007, when Hamas took full control of the territory by force.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran's reformists protest at Quds Day rally
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iran security forces clashed with supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi and arrested at least 10 of them as they marched at the annual anti-Israel Quds Day rally in Tehran on Friday, witnesses said.

"Security forces just arrested over 10 people," a witness said. "They are pushing protesters and beating them."

Members of the Basij paramilitary force were deployed to suppress the protests in Tehran's Haft Tir square early in the day as clashes with protesters also had broken out in the holy city of Mashhad, Asfahan and the home town of Mousavi Tebriz, .

Hundreds of Iranians, wearing green accessories, shouted slogans in support of opposition leader Mousavi, as they marched at the rally in Tehran.

A witness told AFP that the crowds of young men and women, many wearing green wristbands, were shouting "Ya Hossein! Mir Hossein!" and also called for the release of political prisoners detained since the aftermath of the June 12 presidential election.

They also chanted "Don't be afraid, we are all together" and "Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, I will sacrifice myself for Iran," the witness said, adding the crowds were marching from the central Vali Asr square towards Tehran university.

Meanwhile, reformist sources told Al Arabiya that Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, a candidate also in last June's presidential elections, would be arrested following the protest.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had urged people last Friday to celebrate Quds Day and warned against using the event to stage anti-government protests.

Hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whose re-election remains hotly contested by the opposition, was due to give a keynote address at the university later.

For the first time in decades, the sermon at the Quds Day prayers was not to be given by former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani who backed Mousavi in the election but hardline cleric Ahmad Khatami.

Rafsanjani has come under strong criticism from hardliners for speaking out against the conduct of the election during a key sermon in July in which he also called for the release of protesters detained in the post-election unrest.

Several opposition and reformist websites expressed disbelief at the apparent snub but Rafsanjani himself played it down.

"I don't think it is necessary that I always deliver the sermon on this day after 30 years," he said in an interview with state television's al-Alam Arabic-language channel.
