Afghanistan
Afghan Civilians Die in Roadside Bomb Blast
[Quqnoos] A roadside bomb struck a civilian vehicle in western Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing and wounding a dozen on board

At least five civilians were killed and seven others, including women and children, were injured in the explosion occurred in the Gulistan district of the western Farah province, provincial governor Roh-Ul Amin said.

Governor Amin blamed Taliban militants for planting the roadside bomb in the restive district of Gulistan.

"Taliban militants perhaps intended to target Afghan or foreign troops but the bomb hit a civilian vehicle," governor Amin further said.

No groups, including the Taliban, have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Moreover, government officials in Farah said two Taliban insurgents were killed yesterday while planting a roadside bomb in the Bakwa District of the province.

The bomb was likely exploded due to technical errors, an official said.

Africa Horn
Did SF capture Somali Al-Qaeda leaders in last week's raid?
Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera has some interesting news on the covert raid conducted by US Special Forces, dubbed Celestial Balance, that targeted an al Qaeda leader in Southern Somalia on Sept. 14th. According to a local stringer for the newspaper, Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan was not killed but captured alive. Along with Nabhan, American commandos apprehended Abu Mansur al Amriki, the American convert to Islam who has become a commander in charge of military training for Shabaab.
Good Gawd! I certainly hope they don't put ladies' underwear on their heads! That would be tragic.

#3  Nobody has acknowledged the death of Monsour al-Meriki:

Abu Mansoor Al-Amriki, the American commander serving in the al-Shabaab militia and who is the star of several slick recruiting videos, has been identified as Omar Hammami, a former computer science major at the University of South Alabama. He is originally from Daphne, Alabama.

Hammami was president of the university’s Muslim Student Association right after 9/11.

Islamist rebels face off in southern Somali port
Rival Islamist insurgents are squaring up for a fight over southern Somalia's strategic port of Kismayu after hardline al Shabaab rebels unilaterally named a new administration to run the area.

Animosity has been growing between al Shabaab, which the United States says is al Qaeda's proxy in the failed Horn of Africa state, and another rebel militia, Hizbul Islam. Both groups want to control Kismayu, which is a lucrative source of taxes and other income for their fighters, and until this week they controlled the port in an uneasy alliance. Then on Wednesday, al Shabaab named its own local governing council, excluding all their Hizbul Islam rivals.

Residents say both sides are rushing in reinforcements in anticipation of battle, and on Thursday a senior Hizbul Islam leader said they would not recognise the new authority. "The men who call themselves al Shabaab have formed an administration with disregard to the other mujahideen," Sheikh Hassan Turki, Hizbul's deputy leader and the commander of southern Somalia's Ras Kamboni militant group, told reporters. "No one should claim total control of the city. There should be mediation before there is bloodshed ... they broke a promise about forming the town's administration and should fear Allah."

Leaflets denouncing al Shabaab, widely thought to have been printed by the Kamboni group, have been circulating in Kismayu in recent weeks, locals say, raising fears of a confrontation.

Somalia fighting kills 8, witnesses say
[Asharq al-Aswat] Witnesses say fighting in Somalia's capital has killed at least 8 people and wounded 15 after Islamic insurgents attacked an African Union peacekeeping base. A spokesman for the AU force, Bahoku Barigye, said no peacekeepers died in Tuesday's attack or the subsequent fighting.

Witnesses report seeing at least 8 corpses. The powerful al-Shabab insurgent group is trying to topple Somalia's government and install strict Islamic law. Last week, they launched two suicide car bombs on the main African Union base, killing 21 people. It was the deadliest single attack on peacekeepers since they arrived in 2007.

There are increasing concerns that al-Shabab's ties to Al Qaeda are growing.

Jubo League man killed in shootout
[Bangla Daily Star] A Jubo League leader was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and law enforcers at Taltola, on the outskirts of Kushtia town, early yesterday.
Taltola, on the outskirts of Kushtia town won't be the same without him.
The dead was identified as Rashedul Islam, 35, Jubo League organising secretary of Kushtia town unit.
"Yes. That's him. I'd know that corpse anywhere."
He along with his brother Hamidul formed an outlawed party named Rashedul-Hamidul Bahini, police said.
"I'm bored, Hamidul!"
"Me, too, Rashedul!"
"I got an idea! Let's form an outlawed bahini!"
"Oh, neat idea!"

The gang was mainly involved in drug and arms smuggling, abduction and extortion.
"So what's our bahini gonna do?"
"How about we try our hand at drug and arms smuggling?"
"Yeah! And abduction!"
"And extortion!"
"We can wear turbans!"
"And masks!"
"This is gonna be lotsa fun!"

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of police and Rab-12 raided a field at Taltola where a gang of outlaws, led by Rashedul, was holding a meeting at about 5:30am.
"Rashedul, it's 5.30 in the morning! Don't youse ever sleep?"
"Not when there's extortiin' to be done!"
"And abduction!"

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.
"Whoa! Is that the cops!"
"Gimme that gun!"
[BANG! BANG! BANGETY BANG!]

Rashedul was caught in the line of fire while trying to flee the scene.
"Hey! Watch it, youse guys!... I'm outta here!... Ow!... Ow!... Hey! Stop it! You're hurting me!... Owwwww!"
Police took him to Kushtia General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
"Rosebud!"
"He's dead, Jim!"
[rattle]

Police recovered a locally made gun and three bullets from the spot.
"Hey, chief! Y'ever see a gun like this?"
"Oh, yeah. There's a guy in Kushtia makes them."
"How about these bullets?"
"I dunno who makes them."

Rashedul and his brother Hamidul were arrested during the last caretaker government.
"Stick 'em up, Rashidul! You, too, Hamidul!"
Later, Rashedul was released after Awami League government assumed power and was made organising secretary of Jubo League.
"Hey! Let us outta here!"
"Why?"
"We got twenty bucks!"
"Twenty bucks? Why, you can be organizing secretary with that kinda dough!"

He was accused in a number of cases, including four for murders, police said adding that Rashedul was involved in looting Millpara police outpost in 2001.

Denver bus driver indicted for plotting to use WMD
(CBS) Najibullah Zazi, the Denver man believed to be the central figure in a terror plot against the New York City transit system, has officially been indicted on charges of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction against persons or property in the United States, CBS 2 has learned.
WMD are actually chem, bio, or nuclear weapons by definition and by treaty. Anything that's not chem, bio, or nuke is merely an "explosive," even if it produces a big kaboom.
Zazi was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday in Denver on a count of lying to terrorism investigators. The new charge of conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction was filed in New York City, and authorities plan to transfer him to the federal court in Brooklyn to face the new charges.

Zazi has publicly denied making any terrorist plots. Counterterrorist agents fear he and others may have been planning to detonate homemade bombs on New York City commuter trains. Zazi's father and the Queens Imam Ahmad Afzali were also charged with lying to investigators in the case.

Afzali was ordered freed on $1.5 million bail, and elder Zazi was set free under court supervision until an Oct. 9 hearing.

The court documents do not identify any conspirators or targets and sheds no light on the scale of Zazi's intended plot, but the newly revealed evidence coupled with the discovery of backpacks and cell phones in the recent Queens raid add to the suspicion that Zazi and his partner were intending on developing portable bombs for use at muliple targets.

According to the Department of Justice, a federal grand jury in Brooklyn returned a one-count indictment alleging that between Aug. 1, 2008 and Sept. 21, 2009, Zazi knowingly and intentionally conspired with others to use one or more weapons of mass destruction, specifically explosive bombs and other similar explosive devices, against persons or property within the United States. The indictment also alleges that Zazi and others traveled in interstate and foreign commerce, used email and the Internet, and that this offense and the results of the offense would have affected interstate and foreign commerce.

If convicted, Zazi faces up to life in prison.

"The indictment alleges that Najibullah Zazi conspired with others to use explosive devices against persons or property in the United States," said Attorney General Eric Holder. "We are investigating a wide range of leads related to this alleged conspiracy, and we will continue to work around the clock to ensure that anyone involved is brought to justice," said Attorney General Eric Holder.

"We believe any imminent threat arising from this case has been disrupted, but as always, we remind the American public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement," he added.

According to a detention motion filed, "Zazi received detailed bomb-making instructions in Pakistan, purchased components of improvised explosive devices, and traveled to New York City on September 10, 2009 in furtherance of his criminal plans."

Authorities have said they found bomb-making instructions on a hard drive on Zazi's laptop computer, but still were unsure of the specific target or scope of a possible terrorist attack.

On Wednesday, the NYPD was showing a new training video in precincts citywide detailing the intelligence from the agencies. Bomb Squad Commander Lt. Marc Torre narrates the video, giving regular cops some tips on how to spot evidence of homemade bombs.

"Of particular concern to us is a family of explosives called peroxide-based explosives," he says in the video.

It's part of the now-nationwide alert as police try to locate whoever might have been working with terror suspect Zazi. Police are being told to watch for any large quantities of hydrogen peroxide, drain cleaner, acetone, or nail polish remover – various types of acids – and large quantities of ammonia nitrate or urea fertilizer.

That's coupled with visits to public storage areas to enlist the assistance of employees there, and stepped-up security on mass transit, hotels, stadiums, and entertainment complexes.

The first arrests came after the raids of several apartments in the Queens neighborhood, where Zazi had driven from Denver to visit earlier this month, and were followed by a flurry of nationwide warnings of possible strikes on transit, sports and entertainment complexes.

On Wednesday, hundreds of federal agents and NYPD investigators again fanned out in the neighborhood where apartments were searched -- and backpacks and cell phones removed -- over a week ago, to re-interview "people previously encountered" during previous raids there, and to locate others who know them, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the probe.

The effort also includes a review of phone and other records that could link potential suspects to one another or identify new ones.

"Many of the people we've spoken to have been cooperative," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the investigation is ongoing.

The official said business owners also are on the list of possible witnesses in a potential homemade-bomb plot. The official declined to identify those businesses, but authorities regularly monitor sales by suppliers of chemicals that could be used in improvised explosives.

BANNU, Pakistan (Reuters) - A suspected U.S. drone fired a missile at a house in a northwest Pakistan militant stronghold on Thursday killing three people, Pakistani security officials said. The suspected U.S. missile struck a house near a religious school run by Afghan Taliban commander Jalaluddin Haqqani in the North Waziristan region on the Afghan border, the intelligence agency officials said.

Official sources said security forces arrested militant commander Naseem alias Abu Faraj in Matta, who was initially affiliated with the banned organisation Jaish-e-Muhammad, and had later joined the militants in Swat. Sources added that Abu Faraj also masterminded the looting of a bank in Chuprial and remained actively involved in acts of violence against security forces. He was considered to be among the top militant commanders in the valley.

In another raid in Charbagh, security forces arrested two militants. The troops did not disclose the identity of the held militants. However, there were reports that they were Taliban militants Fazal Haq and Rasool Khan, residents of Charbagh.

German 'jihad colony' in Waziristan
The German government is trying to secure the release of a group of suspected German terrorists, arrested by Pakistani authorities while they were on their way to a jihadi colony in Waziristan Agency.

A report in the German newspaper Speigel claimed that entire families from Germany, and Europe, were moving to the region to take part in jihad.
Why would Germany want to get back people like that?
In a recent jihadi video surfacing in Germany, a young speaker, who called himself "Abu Adam", praises his stay in the mountains. "Doesn't it appeal to you? We warmly invite you to join us!" Abu Adam said.

The latest recruitment video from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) is 30 minutes in length and is addressed to "beloved" brothers and sisters back in Germany.

The video was presented by, among others, Mounir Chouka, alias "Abu Adam", who grew up in the western German city of Bonn. The video showed shacks erected against a backdrop of lush greenery and craggy rock formations, with women wearing blue burqas seen surrounded by children, the paper said.

The video appeals seem to be finding fertile ground in Germany. German security officials believe the IMU is currently the largest and most active Islamic group recruiting in the country. But what was worrying them more was that the terrorists did not usually recruit women and children, as the IMU appeared doing.
I beg your pardon. How can the German security officials tell whether the women are German or local girls -- or even not boys in drag -- through the blue tents? And how can they tell whether the children, unless blue-eyed tow-heads, are "German" or local?
Families are moving to "mujahideen villages" in the Tribal Areas, which are used as bases for supporting the battle against the US troops and the Afghan army, Speigel claimed.

The paper said the German government was also examining the propaganda offensive and for several weeks, diplomats in the German Foreign Ministry have been engaged with Islamabad over the fate of a group of suspected terrorists from Germany's Rhineland region, who have been held in custody in Pakistan for several months now. The group includes a young Tunisian and six Germans, including Andreas M of Bonn, a Muslim convert, and his Eritrean wife Kerya.

The case has gathered much attention of the German government, as those in custody include the couple's four-year-old daughter, believed to have suffered in tough conditions since May.

Germany has made several attempts to negotiate a swift return for the mother and daughter at least, but Pakistan has so far refused.

The travellers, which the paper said apparently met each other in a Bonn prayer room, left Germany in several small groups in March and April. "They travelled through Turkey to the Iranian city of Zahedan. Located close to the border with Pakistan, Zahedan is notorious for its jihad tourism -- hotels even set aside entire room allotments for radical foreigners making their way to the city," Speigel said. "From Zahedan, most take taxis to Pakistan. For the group of Germans, though, that's where the problems started. After crossing the border, the Germans were captured by police and taken to a jail in Peshawar."
"Yew ain't from 'round here, ares yew?"
The group claimed they were handled roughly by Pakistani officials, with several claiming they had been beaten as well.
Life sucks in a third world dictatorship, huh ...
Security officials believe that the goal of Mounir Chouka and the IMU was to strengthen the German "colony" in Waziristan. The detainees also include Chouka's brother-in-law, the German-Libyan Ahmed K.

Ahmed K's arrest is now creating problems for the center-left Social Democratic Party (SDP) back in Bad Breisig, the German town where he resides. He works as a market analyst at a consulting firm that specialises in the Middle East. The company's boss, Arnold Joosten, also happens to be the head of the local SPD chapter in Bad Breisig.

Iraq
Al-Qaida-linked inmates break out of Iraq prison
Five al-Qaida-linked prisoners awaiting execution and 11 other inmates broke out of a prison in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, prompting a massive manhunt Thursday, officials said.
Few details on the fugitives were provided by Iraqi security chiefs. But five were Iraqis who were sentenced to death for terrorism-related crimes and links to al-Qaida in Iraq, said a Tikrit police officer, said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the operation with media.

The other 11 escaped convicts were jailed on charges that include kidnapping and murder, and some were awaiting sentencing, the officer said. At least one — a 19-year-old inmate — was recaptured early Thursday and the other remained at large.
A full-scale curfew was imposed on the city of 250,000 after the escape and eased before sundown on Thursday. Soldiers, however, expanded checkpoints and displayed wanted posters with photos of the fugitives. Military units also sharpened their watch on Iraq's borders — particularly the western frontier with Syria — as the dragnet widened over sparsely populated regions outside Tikrit.

At the request of local authorities, the U.S. military in the area provided search dogs and aerial surveillance, spokesman Maj. Derrick Cheng said.
