#2  Much depends on the purpose of the kinetic energy weapon. Most of the study has assumed a deep penetration single weapon, like a bunker buster. But just as valuable, in a different way, would be a multitude of shallow penetration large area weapons.

The difference is between the "rods from God", and a space shuttle bay full of basketball sized steel balls covered in heat resistant ceramic.

14 Americans Killed in Two Afghan Chopper Crashes
Two helicopter crashes killed 14 Americans and wounded 26 in Afghanistan on Monday, the U.S. military said. U.S. authorities have ruled out hostile fire in the collision but have not given a cause for the other fatal crash in the west. Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmedi claimed Taliban fighters shot down a helicopter in northwest Badghis province's Darabam district. It was impossible to verify the claim and unclear if he was referring to the same incident.
Way to not terrorize anyone, O Mangy Lions of Islam!
In the first crash, a chopper went down in the west of the country after leaving the scene of a firefight with insurgents, killing 10 Americans — seven troops and three civilians working for the government. Eleven American troops, one U.S. civilian and 14 Afghans were also injured. In a separate incident in the south, two other U.S. choppers collided while in flight, killing four American troops and wounding two more, the military said.

"These separate tragedies today underscore the risks our forces and our partners face every day," Col. Wayne Shanks, a spokesman for the NATO-led coalition, said Monday. "Each and every death is a tremendous loss for the family and friends of each service member and civilian. Our grief is compounded when we have such a significant loss on one day."
You have had our gratitude since the day you put on the uniform. May your memory bring comfort to those who loved you.
U.S. military spokeswoman Elizabeth Mathias said coalition forces had launched an operation to recover the wreckage of the helicopter that was downed in the west. She said the aircraft was leaving the site of a joint operation with Afghan forces when it went down.

The joint force had "searched a suspected compound believed to harbor insurgents conducting activities related to narcotics trafficking in western Afghanistan," NATO said in a statement. "During the operation, insurgent forces engaged the joint force and more than a dozen enemy fighters were killed in the ensuing firefight.

#1  Though I'm not familiar with helicopter ops, in both the civilian and military world there seems to be far too many examples of helicopter collisions. But collision avoidance technology is so simple that even automobiles are being designed with it.

If I was going to design a system for helicopters, it would be like a flexible electronic bubble around them, with the bubble expanding or contracting based on their movement and maneuver. When two bubbles meet, alarms go off.

Afghans accuse US troops of burning Quran
[Al Arabiya Latest] At least one thousand Afghans took to the streets of Kabul on Sunday to protest against what they said was the desecration of a copy of the Quran by foreign troops during a raid last week.
Fall for it each and every time, don't they?
As police fired into the air to break up the crowd, thick smoke rose above the crowd, who burned an effigy of American President Barack Obama and chanted anti-American slogans.
"Give us back our theocracy!"
"No to democracy. We just want Islam," said one banner carried by protesters, who expressed their desire for foreign troops to leave the war-torn country. Others threw stones and clashed with police but no casualties were reported. "Death to America. Down with Israel," chanted one man at the rally, which was organized mainly by university students.
How many Zionist troops in Afghanistan?
The protestors, which blocked traffic around the capital's parliament building for an hour, accused foreign forces of burning a copy of Islam's holy book during a raid in Maidan Wardak province last week. "The arrest and punishment of the culprits is the demand by all students and the students would continue peaceful protest despite police surrounded them forcing to disperse," China's official news agency, Xinhua, quoted a protestor as saying.

Blame Taliban
Meanwhile as spokeswoman for U.S. and NATO-led forces in Afghanistan said none of their troops were involved in the incident and blamed the Taliban for spreading a false rumor that a copy of the Quran had been burned.

Captain Elizabeth Mathias, a media officer for U.S. and NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, said the Taliban were trying to undermine foreign troops by spreading the rumor.
Really? No shit?
"We did not burn a Quran ... It is unfortunate that the protesters believe a Taliban rumor," Mathias said, adding an investigation had been carried out.
"It is indeed unfortunate that Afghanistain seems to have such a high proportion of gullible yokels. But it's not surprising, given the large number of Pashtuns in the country. Ignorance is a virtue for them, isn't it?"
The Taliban could not be reached immediately for comment.
They were snickering and high-fiving...
Afghanistan has seen protests in the past over similar incidents, as well as over cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist in a Danish newspaper in 2006.
Yeah, they had riots in 1979 where an Army warrant officer was killed, mainly because they're fanatical assholes. Then the Soviets invaded and the fanatical assholes resettled on the Pak side of the border while the Tadjiks and Uzbeks and Hazaras and such tried to throw the commies out.
Fanaticism takes you but so far. Easier to be a fanatic when you're safe ...

#2  Since rent-a-mobs are so cheap in Afghanistan, someone could make great sport by hiring a mob to protest against something that is obviously a gag. Even give them signs to wave.

"Chris Matthews felches goats!" "Go to the kitchen and make me some pah!" "U.S. out of Iceland!" "Michael Jackson fan club" "www.zombo.com"

#6  Given the fact that the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan recognize neither freedom of speech nor freedom of conscience, I'm looking forward to see these "students" arrested, prosecuted, convicted and sentenced to death in the near future.

Certainly terrorist threats against western nations must be so incompatible with the principles of the Islamic Republic that the death penalty is warranted.

/sarcasm

On a serious note:

Denials and apologies by NATO are a mistake. A coran may or may not have been damaged by any military operation. The fact remains that burning or "desecrating" a coran is very much protected free expression in the West, and any Afghan with access to e.g. Youtube will find ample evidence of this.

An apology is thus insincere (all Western troops have sworn an oath to protect among others the right to free expression), and it will be understood as an act of submission thus undermining deterrence.

#7  "When we burn books we do it openly. Should we find the need, we will announce it beforehand, then televise the event and post it on YouTube. If you don't see it there, someone is trying to make you look stupid."

Actually, I read somewhere that the students are trying to embarrass the Americans, and they're going to keep it up until we leave. Riots are fun for the lads, after all -- gets them out in the fresh air and sunshine, gives them a break from the stresses of learning, and of course they get a bit of beer money as well. I think it's time the Chancellor announced mandatory class attendance, and anyone missing so much as a single class will be automatically expelled with no opportunity to re-register for subsequent terms. Given the unemployment rate and the number who want an education in Afghanistan, the universities needn't indulge the demonstrably idiotic.

Bangladesh
2 Hizbut offices raided
[Bangla Daily Star] Police yesterday raided the Dhaka central office and Sylhet divisional office of recently banned Islamist organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir Bangladesh, and seized its publications, and various other documents and properties.

The same day Bangladesh Bank (BB) issued an order to all banks across the country to freeze all accounts of the banned outfit. The central bank gave the instruction according to the Anti-terrorism Act 2009 which empowers the authorities to freeze bank accounts of any banned outfit.

The Dhaka University syndicate decided to send Mohiuddin Ahmed, associate professor of Institute of Business Administration and chief coordinator of Hizb ut-Tahrir Bangladesh, on forced leave indefinitely for his involvement with the banned outfit.
Whoa -- was he tenured?
Meanwhile, police kept Mohiuddin confined to his residence on Green Road in the capital throughout the day. "We'll arrest him if the authorities instruct us to do so," said a Detective Branch official, wishing anonymity.

A large contingent of Motijheel police raided the head office of the banned outfit on the forth floor of Siddique Mansion at Purana Paltan around 12 noon and seized several computers, several hundred CDs, a large number of books, leaflets, posters, and various other materials.

The raid came after a Dhaka court permitted it along with seizure of publications and properties of Hizb ut-Tahrir which the government had banned on October 22 saying the group is a threat to public security. After the four-hour drive police shut down the office.

Motijheel Zone Deputy Commissioner Khandaker Mahid Uddin who led the drive said the seized materials will help law enforcers in their investigation. "We have seized these properties and documents on information that the banned outfit was planning to carry out subversive acts, and its leaders are some of the masterminds of anti-state activities," DC Mahid Uddin said.

Police said the organisation has at least 24 publications and innumerable leaflets and posters, and that they collected books and documents about jihad.

Since the banning, police had kept the central office cordoned off disallowing anyone to enter.

Officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Majibur Rahman said, "The materials were seized after we broke the lock of the office which had been under our observation."

Earlier in the morning, Sub-inspector Shahjahan of Paltan Police filed a petition with a Dhaka court seeking permission to raid the office and to seize materials from it.

Four tried over Australian army suicide plot
A man accused of plotting to kill Australian soldiers in an armed assault on a Sydney barracks expressed delight at devastating bushfires which killed 173 people here, a court heard Monday.

Saney Aweys, 26, is one of four men ordered to stand trial on terrorism charges related to an alleged conspiracy to attack the Holsworthy Army Base on Sydney's outskirts in a suicide mission.

Along with fellow accused Abdirahman Ahmed, 25, Wissam Mahmoud Fattal, 33, and Yacqub Khayre, 22, he pleaded not guilty at Melbourne Magistrates' Court to plotting to storm the base, a centre for thousands of military personnel.

Among evidence released by the court was a transcript of an intercepted telephone call in which Aweys allegedly describes Australians as "filthy people" and thanks Allah for February's deadly wildfires.

In March police intercepted a call to a friend in which he allegedly noted that wildfires had broken out across the country "and all were happy".

"The whole nation is coming down, first the economy comes down first," he said in reference to the global financial crisis, before commenting on the drought and Melbourne's water shortage.

"By Allah, factories shutting down, nothing here mate, nothing barely anything," he told the friend.

"By Allah, I've never seen Melbourne like this, then fire coming to them, no water, the water storage is empty.

"They are copping hard man. Thanks to Allah, thanks to Allah."

Lawyers for the accused argued against the release of the transcript and other police evidence, which includes footage of one of the men looking at the army base.

But magistrate Peter Reardon said public interest in the case warranted it.

Reardon said there was sufficient evidence before the court for the men to stand trial.

Aweys and his co-accused, who were picked up in a major counter-terrorism swoop in August, did not apply for bail and will face Melbourne Supreme Court on November 9.

A fifth accused, 25-year-old Nayef El Sayed, has also been charged with helping prepare an armed attack on the base but has elected for a contested committal hearing next May rather than go straight to a Supreme Court trial.

In February, bushfires killed 173 people in the southeastern state of Victoria, eradicating entire towns and destroying thousands of homes in a firestorm known as Black Saturday.

Iraq
Deadly Blasts Rock Baghdad, Killing Dozens
BAGHDAD -- Two powerful suicide car bombs near high-profile government offices rocked the capital on Sunday in the deadliest attack here in more than two years, killing at least 147 people and raising fresh worry about the capabilities of Iraq's security services ahead of national elections scheduled for January.

The Ministry of Interior said that in addition to the dead, more than 500 people were injured. Charred bodies, limbs and the smoldering shells of dozens of cars littered the area. The explosions also shattered windows throughout the nearby Mansour Hotel, which houses the Chinese Embassy. Some ceilings collapsed.

The blasts, which the government said bore the signature of al Qaeda in Iraq, most damaged Baghdad's provincial headquarters and the nearby federal Ministry of Justice. Many of the protective blast walls surrounding those buildings collapsed.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki visited the site of the attacks and blamed al Qaeda and members of the Baath party. His office said in a statement that the explosions were meant to create instability and to stop the January parliamentary elections.

Ma'an -- Egyptian security forces said on Sunday that they discovered and seized a major weapons cache and arrested a suspected smuggler in near the border with the Gaza Strip.

Egyptian security officials said police stopped the suspect when he was driving in the area. The suspect, Ahmad Abu Maleeh, 30, from the Egyptian side of the city of Rafah, told interrogators that he had just driven another smuggler to tunnel in the area.

Security forces also discovered a tunnel in the same area, and confiscated what they said was a large quantity of firearms and ammunition. The officials said that the security presence in the area was increased as a result of the discovery.

Meanwhile, Israel informed Egypt that Israeli border guards arrested 32 African migrants who managed to cross the Sinai border into Israel, officials said. The Africans crossed south of the Kerem Shalom crossing point, Egyptian officials said.

#1  Egypt should stop tolerating the Palestinian trash. Let another Arab state aid and abet them. Egypt should seal up and pretty much ignore their Eastern border before they end up responsible for the wretches.

The western and southern borders on the other hand, all that oil, and those crazy leaders. You just gotta time it right and all that oil is yours.

Israeli police, protesters clash in Aqsa compound
[Al Arabiya Latest] Clashes erupted on Sunday between police and Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in the latest violence to shake Jerusalem's flashpoint site holy to Muslims and Jews.

The clashes came amid rising tensions in the past weeks over the area known to Jews as Temple Mount and to Muslims as al-Haram al-Sharif or Noble Sanctuary.

Police said they entered the compound in the morning after Palestinian demonstrators threw stones at visitors to the holy site, known to Muslims as Al-Haram Al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary) and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said youths threw stones and a petrol bomb at police on a routine patrol near the al-Aqsa mosque. He said 12 arrests were made in and around the compound.

Palestinian officials said police had closed off the compound to visitors, leaving hundreds of worshippers inside.

Rosenfeld said the forces were trying to disperse the crowd but could not confirm that the area had been sealed off. He said fewer than 100 civilians were involved in the violent incident.
