Marines push 'The Breacher' against Taliban lines
SISTANI, Afghanistan – In comes "The Joker."

That's the nickname given by the crew to one of the 72-ton, 40-foot (12-meter)-long Assault Breacher Vehicles. Fitted with a plow and nearly 7,000 pounds (3,175 kilograms) of explosives, the Breachers, as they are commonly known, are the Marines Corps' answer to the deadliest threat facing NATO troops in Afghanistan: thousands of land mines and roadside bombs, or improvised explosive devices, that litter the Afghan landscape.

The Breachers, metal monsters that look like a tank with a cannon, carry a 15-foot (4.5-meter) -wide plow supported by metallic skis that glide on the dirt, digging a safety lane through the numerous minefields laid by the Taliban.

If there are too many mines, the Breachers can fire rockets carrying high-grade C-4 explosive up to 150 yards (meters) forward, detonating the hidden bombs at a safe distance so that troops and vehicles can pass through safely.

The detonations — over 1,700 pounds (770 kilograms) of Mine Clearing Line Charges — send a sheet fire into the air and shock waves rippling through the desert in all directions.

Reporters watched the "Breacher" in action Wednesday as Marines edged closer to Marjah, a southern Taliban stronghold that NATO commanders plan to attack in the coming days in the largest joint NATO-Afghan operation of the Afghan war. Troops are expected to face a massive threat from mines and roadside bombs as they push into Marjah, 380 miles (610 kilometers) southwest of Kabul.

"This may be the largest IED threat and largest minefield that NATO has ever faced," says Brig Gen. Larry Nicholson, the commander of all Marines in southern Afghanistan.

Several Breachers — including "The Joker" and its twin "Iceman" — will be used in the Marjah assault. Commanders hope they will make a huge difference as troops pierce through layer after layer of minefields circling the town. "I consider it to be a truly lifesaving weapon," said Gunnery Sgt. Steven Sanchez, 38, leader of a platoon from the 2nd Marines Combat Engineers Battalion.

A cross between a bulldozer and Abrams tank with a 1,500-horsepower turbine engine, Breachers are so valuable that they only travel outside bases along with a tank retrieval vehicle to drag them to safety if they are damaged.

Sanchez's platoon drove Breachers in their first combat operation in December, when Marines reclaimed a section of the heavily mined Now Zad valley farther north in Helmand province. "We made history, and the Breacher did well," says Sanchez, of Palm Desert, Calif. "I'm happy to see that this monster is on our side," said Rahim Ullah, a machine gunner in the Afghan army unit that will fight alongside the Marines.

A few kinks are yet to be worked but before the Breachers are entirely up to speed. Two charges fired by "The Joker" and "Iceman" on Wednesday didn't go off automatically, forcing one of their crew to dismount and trigger the explosives themselves.

Developed by the Marines since the 1990s and costing US$3.5 million apiece, the Breacher still has room for improvement, Sanchez admits. "It's not in the testing phase anymore, but it sure as hell still is in the deployment phase," he said, adding that all the Marines serving on his Breacher platoon are volunteers and intent on improving the new weapon. "I'm convinced it's going to prove itself in Marjah," Sanchez said.

Many on his platoon believe the Breacher has already proven its worth. The Joker's vehicle commander, Cpl. Michael Turner, 21, of Provo, Utah, says his Breacher works even better than he'd thought during training. "She's surprisingly easy to operate," Turner said. His vehicle can travel at 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour. When plowing for bombs, it can still move at 5 to 8 mph (8 to 13 kph), depending on the terrain — all the while digging up the dirt 14 inches (36 centimeters) deep.

"That's plenty enough to get the IEDs," said Turner, because any explosive buried deeper is unlikely to be triggered by a vehicle driving by.

The Joker's driver, Sgt. Jeremy Kinsey, 23, from Sunny Side, Washington, even triggered a live IED during his Breacher's first combat outing in December. The 60-pound (27-kilogram) bomb exploded on his plow, powerful enough to rip out a tire or an axle from a normal armored vehicle. The Breacher barely registered. "It shook slightly," Kinsey said. "I laughed and I drove on."

Arial resupply, IMHO, is a great niche, but roads baby roads are the way.

In the grand scheme of things, 3.5 mil isn't a lot, considering what an Abrams' price tag is to begin with, and the work is essentially being done in-house.

Arabia
Yemen declares ceasefire with Houthi rebels
[Al Arabiya Latest] President Ali Abdullah Saleh announced on Thursday a ceasefire in Yemen's six-month campaign against Shiite rebels in a conflict that spilled over into Saudi territory in the north. The ceasefire would kick in from midnight (212D GMT on Thursday), Saleh said in a decree that was read out on state television.

"We decided to stop military operations in the northwest from midnight," the president declared.

The leader of Houthi rebels in turn ordered his fighters to abide by the ceasefire with the Yemeni government, a rebel statement said. "According to what was agreed upon, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi issued instructions to all fronts and fighting sites to stop firing coinciding with the timing announced by the government," the statement said.

Saleh made the announcement after reports that the government and Shiite Zaidi rebels, also known as Houthis, were close to reaching a deal to end the fighting.

The truce was made possible after the rebels accepted six conditions put forward by the government for the cessation of hostilities.

Even so, an official told AFP earlier on Thursday that 12 Yemeni soldiers and 24 Shiite rebels were killed in heavy clashes in Amran province north of the capital Sanaa. The fighting had erupted late on Wednesday in the area of Burkat al-Shamsi following a sudden rebel attack.

Bangladesh
Rajshahi Jamaat chief arrested
[Bangla Daily Star] Police yesterday arrested Rajshahi city Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Ataur Rahman in connection with the two cases filed for Tuesday's violence at Rajshahi University and the murder of Faruk Hossain.

Meanwhile, police claimed to have recovered the body of an Islami Chhatra Shibir leader, accused of being involved in Tuesday's violence, at a house in Chapainawabganj.

The law enforcement agencies have started combing operations at all the Jamaat-Shibir strongholds across the country. They arrested 32 Shibir men. Six were placed on remand.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police yesterday suspended another policemen in connection with negligence of duty at a Rajshahi University dormitory Tuesday.

Police arrested Jamaat leader Ataur, also an assistant headmaster of Loknath High School in Rajshahi, around 10:15am yesterday as he was going to school, Boalia Police Station chief Jasimuddin told The Daily Star.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nawsher Ali said Ataur was being interrogated and he was arrested after investigation revealed his involvement in the violence. "Only two days before the violence, Ataur presided over a meeting in Rajshahi city where many Jamaat leaders delivered provocative statements and we received information that he ordered the murder," said the RMP commissioner.

Talking to reporters at Boalia Police Station Ataur denied involvement in the violence.

Rajshahi city Jamaat General Secretary Abul Kalam Azad termed the arrest unfair and gave a statement protesting it.

As police recovered the body of a Shibir leader from a house at Choitonnaypur under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj early yesterday, they arrested two people there.

The deceased was identified as accounting student Hafijur Rahman Shahin, 25. He was a student of Rajshahi Collage but the student welfare secretary of Rajshahi University Shibir unit, Jamaat sources said. He is the son of Abdul Mannan of Rajshahi town.

Superintendent of Police Nazrul Hossain said police on information raided Toufijul Islam Tanu's house around 2:00am. He said some Shibir cadres took shelter there after the Rajshahi University incident.

Sensing the presence of police, they fired a shot, said police adding that policemen heard the shot and entered the house and found a body lying on the floor.

Police also arrested house owner and local Jamaat leader Toufijul Islam Tanu and his son Shibir leader Mahfuzur Rahman, 27.

Fazlur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station said police filed a murder case against Mahfuz and three to four unidentified people.

In Dhaka, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid blamed police for killing Shibir activist Hafizur Rahman Shahin. "Police shot Shahin to death in his sleep at his friend Mahfuz's house. This is an inhuman act. Now we are scared," he said.

Police and Chhatra League Rajshahi University general secretary on Wednesday filed two cases accusing around 600 Shibir activists in connection with the violence. Three days after the nightlong mayhem at Rajshahi University, an injured Bangladesh Chhatra League worker Kawsar Alam Sarker filed a case with Motihar Police Station accusing 24 Shibir men of stabbing him during the violence.

RMP yesterday suspended another police officer, in connection with negligence of duty on Tuesday at Shah Makhdum Hall where Faruk was killed, raising the total number of suspended policemen to nine. Sub-Inspector Anwar Hossain Babu, second officer of Motihar Police Station, was also closed to the Rajshahi Police Lines.

A joint team comprised of Rapid Action Battalion and police personnel rounded up 45 Shibir men between 1:30am and 6:00am yesterday raiding Rajshahi University and its adjoining areas.

Police arrested 32 Shibir cadres, 16 of them accused in the two cases filed Wednesday, from Natore, Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts in an overnight combing operation. The number of total arrestees is now 78.

Six of them were sent to a court yesterday and placed on five-day remand each.

State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku said, "The law enforcement agencies have been ordered to launch a combing operation at Rajshahi University areas and educational institutions known as strongholds of Jamaat-Shibir."

He told this to reporters after a special meeting with heads of the law enforcement agencies at the home ministry.

The meeting was convened in the backdrop of Tuesday's violence at Rajshahi University and the killing of Faruk Hossain, a final year student of the university's mathematics department. Faruk was an activist of Chhatra League, the student front of ruling Awami League.

The university and villages around its campus are known as strongholds of Jamaat-Shibir.

"Jamaat-Shibir men are involved in the acts of cruelty. Police will conduct operations in different universities, colleges and educational institutions where the anti-liberation forces have strong bases," Tuku said.

Police raided over 50 messes dominated by Shibir in the port city early yesterday.

However, none was actually arrested in the drive.

Police sources said half the Shibir activists had already left the messes while some of them were found completely empty during the drive.

They picked up five people but later released them, said Chittagong Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (north) Banaj Kumar Majumder.

He said police served forms at the messes for filling up by all the residents of the messes. As per a government order, the residents require to provide their father's and mother's names, addresses, names of the educational institutions they go to, their roll numbers, voter ID numbers, employers names and addresses, and a few more important information in the form.

"The residents were asked to submit the forms within two days and after getting the information we would monitor their activities," he said.

At a protest rally on Rajshahi University campus yesterday Chhatra League demanded immediate removal of university Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan and held the university authorities responsible for failing to provide security to students.

Our staff correspondents in Rajshahi and Chittagong, our correspondent in Chapainawabganj, our Rajshahi University correspondent and United News of Bangladesh contributed to this report.

Powerful bomb defused at Howrah railway station
Howrah (West Bengal, India), Feb 12 (ANI): A powerful bomb contained in a jerry can was found in Howrah railway station on Thursday, but it was defused before it could cause any damage.

According to sources, a vendor noticed the jerry can lying abandoned on platform and informed the railway police, which immediately cordoned off the area.

"The bomb contained chemical compounds immersed in kerosene oil and sharp metal shrapnels," said ADG (Railways) Dilip Mitra. (ANI)

Twin bombings devastate Bannu killing 15
[Dawn] Fifteen people, seven policemen among them, were killed and 25 others wounded in Bannu on Thursday evening when two suspected suicide bombs ripped through Police Lines.

District Police Officer Iqbal Marwat received serious injuries in the second attack and was stated to be in critical condition.

The Medical Superintendent of district headquarters hospital, Bannu, Dr Hafeezullah Khan, said that Mr Marwat and two other seriously wounded persons had been shifted to the Combined Military Hospital, Bannu.

He said four bodies kept in the hospital could not be identified.

Official sources said that even as the bodies and the wounded were being evacuated from the scene, the second bomber blew himself up, causing more casualties.

A senior officer told Dawn that roll call was in progress at the Police Lines when the first attacker detonated explosives strapped to his body. Mr Marwat rushed to the scene to oversee the rescue work when the second bomber struck, he added.

However, a source at the office of the Bannu Division Commissioner said that causes of the blasts had yet to be ascertained.

"It will be premature to say whether it was a suicide attack," he said.

Police and security forces sealed the city adjoining North Waziristan tribal region. Bannu district has been under night-time curfew for the past few months.

The wounded were taken to the city's district headquarters hospital.

Agencies add:
There were scenes of panic in the hospital as doctors struggled to cope with the number of victims.

Another 25 people were brought in wounded, including two children, and four of the wounded are in a critical condition, he added.

"There were two blasts. The first one was near the gate. The second was a suicide attack. We have confirmed reports it was a suicide attack," said Sardar Abbas, the city's senior administrator.

Militants have carried out numerous attacks on security forces over the past several years. On Wednesday, a suicide bomber killed 12 security personnel and seven civilians in the Khyber tribal region near the Afghan border.

A group of militants attacked soldiers leading a rescue team to the site of a crashed military Cobra helicopter in the same district, killing a brigadier and wounding two other officers.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Thursday's attacks, which were carried out by attackers on foot, but suspicion is likely to fall on Taliban.

The suicide bombings came amid growing certainty that the militant group's top commander, Hakimullah Mehsud, died from wounds sustained in a US missile strike in mid-January. Taliban have denied he is dead, but failed to offer proof that he is alive.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Hamas: Next war with Israel will be widespread
Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal warned Friday that should another war erupt with Israel, the majority of battles would not be contained to the Gaza Strip as they were during the conflict last winter. Meshal told the London-based Al-Hayyat that Hamas was not interested in seeing another war, but would embark on steadfast defense of the Palestinian people should one begin.
We would get our asses kicked yet again if we start another war, but we have super-secret defenses that will punish the Zionists elsewhere! (Just don't ask exactly where).
Meanwhile, a senior defense establishment official said Friday that Israel Defense Forces soldiers have been warned to stay on high alert amid Hamas plans to abduct Israeli troops. The Shin Bet cleared for publication on Thursday that it arrested a prominent Hamas activist in Gaza, who infiltrated into Israel with the intention to abduct an Israeli soldier, murder him, and negotiate over the body. This was not an isolated incident, the defense official warned on Friday. "The attempt along the Egyptian border to attack and abduct, which was foiled in December, was not a one-time procedure," said the official. "The terrorist organization won't hesitate at any chance to grab another bargaining chip against Israel."

The militant arrested in December was named as Salman Abu Atik, a 43-year-old Gaza resident and a prominent Hamas official who was involved in arms smuggling in the past. According to the Shin Bet, Atik was taking orders from another prominent Hamas man. It is believed that Atik exited Gaza through a tunnel into Egypt, where he attempted to enter Israeli territory. He was found in possession of $15,000 in counterfeit bills, a gun, and a silencer.

Following information released in Abu Atik's investigation, another Hamas man, Ibrahim Zuara, was arrested on December 31. Zuara, 44, was in possession of two explosive devices each weighing 31 kilograms. Zuara was apparently supposed to place the devices in heavily populated areas ten days after his entrance into Israel. Zuara also confessed to his involvement in planning the soldier abduction.

The Be'er Sheva court indicted Abu Atik on the charges of attempted murder, illegal army training, arms smuggling, and additional charges. On Feburary 2, Zuara was also indicted and charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnap, and arms smuggling among other charges.

Islamists say leader hurt in Gaza raid
[Ma'an] A Salafi operative was seriously injured when Hamas-led security forces raided his home in Gaza City on Tuesday, prominent Islamist leader Abu Al-Bara' Al-Masri said on Thursday.
Uh-oh. Sounds like they got both feet...
What? Hamas doesn't agree with Salafist ideology??? News to me!
Salafist probably equals Al Qaeda. Hamas wouldn't want the competition.
In a statement, Al-Masri said that Mahmoud Taleb, who is known as Abu Al-Mu'tasem Al-Maqdisi, was hurt when forces loyal to Hamas' de facto government raided a hideout west of Gaza City.

"The statements of the deposed security forces that they arrested Abu Al-Mu'tasem were the first of their kind, indicating the security departments' intentions to kill this leader, who is wanted by the Israeli army," Al-Masri said.

"This is the second time in which Al-Maqdisi was injured by deposed government fire: he was injured by former [Palestinian Authority] security forces years ago, and injured by the Israeli army four times during assassinations and clashes on the battlefield," he added.
Previously on "Nobody Likes Abu"...
"The participation of the Al-Qassam Brigades [Hamas' military wing] in the break-in operation was a move that confirms its goal is to assassinate Abu Al-Mu'tasem despite all the support he offered them during the last Israeli offensive, blaming him for internal events that happened in Gaza despite that the security know exactly who is behind these explosions, claimed by various factions," Al-Masri said.

The Islamist leader said the Hamas-led was responsible for the incident and an operation last August in which the military wing of Hamas wiped out a cell of Islamists who had taken over a mosque in Rafah, an operation Al-Masri termed a "grand crime."

Fringe Islamists in Gaza have been blamed for several explosions in recent weeks, many of which targeted coffee shops and Internet cafes. The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said last month the string of unexplained attacks pointed to a general sense of "security chaos" in the coastal enclave, and called on the de facto government to step up investigations and prosecute the perpetrators.

Southeast Asia
Thai terror leader dies in Malaysia
A suspected leader of the southern insurgency wanted on an arrest warrant issued by the Department of Special Investigation has died in a hospital in Malaysia, a security source says.

Romlee Uttarasin, 67, an older brother of Matubhum Party MP for Narathiwat Areepen Uttarasin, died of heart failure on Wednesday at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur. Romlee fled to Malaysia after the DSI issued the warrant for his arrest for his alleged involvement in the southern unrest. The department offered 2 million baht for information leading to his arrest.

Family members brought his body back to Sungai Kolok Hospital in Narathiwat yesterday for an autopsy. It was then taken to his home town in tambon Paluru in Sungai Padi district for burial in keeping with Muslim tradition. Fourth Army commander Pichet Wisaijorn, Narathiwat governor Thanon Wejchakornkanon and other senior local officials yesterday attended the funeral ceremony.
?!
Just making sure he was well and truly dead, I presume.
Mr Areepen said yesterday his brother was innocent of the insurgency charges against him. He said he had tried over the years to persuade Romlee to turn himself in to the DSI to fight the charges, but his brother refused. Mr Areepen said he was not convinced the security authorities would protect his brother if he returned to Thailand to stand trial.

Meanwhile, two army privates were injured in a bomb attack in Yala's Raman district yesterday. A bomb went off at about 7.50am as the unit was passing through Ban Talorsada. The home-made bomb, weighing 1-2kg, was buried beneath the road.

In Pattani, provincial authorities yesterday attended the funeral rites for an assistant village head who was killed in a drive-by shooting on Wednesday. The provincial office gave the parents of Charan Haoboon, 32, the assistant village head in Nong Chik district, 500,000 baht in initial assistance.
Which is about $15,000 in US $.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran hacking into broadcasts of at least 3 major news outlets
At least three major international media outlets have accused Tehran of interfering with their broadcasting, while cracking down on foreign programs aired in the Islamic Republic. The BBC, Deutsche Welle and Voice of America reported jamming that began as Iran marked the 31st anniversary of its Islamic revolution.
Strangely, CNN hasn't been affected ...
"We condemn any jamming of these channels. It contravenes international agreements and is interfering with the free and open flow of international transmissions that are protected by international treaties," the broadcasters said in a joint statement. "The Iranian authorities are using the same satellite services to broadcast freely around the world including broadcasts in English and Arabic; at the same time they are denying their own people programs coming from the same satellites from the rest of the world," they added.

The United States on Thursday accused Iran of imposing a "near-total information blockade" over the course of the day. The State Department cited evidence that telephone networks had been silenced, SMS messages blocked and that the Internet had been "throttled." The Gmail email system had also been blocked, said sources.

#1  Hey guys, Iran doesn't give a rat's pair of hips about your "condemnation". Get it? You don't amount to a pinch of owl scat to them. Get off your high horse and stop sending out the "strongly worded memos" because nobody on their side is listening to them. They go straight to the shredder.

Nobody cares about your words. We need some sort of ACTION. Someone actually needs to DO something besides whine.

Iran to Suspend Google's Email
Iran's telecommunications agency announced what it described as a permanent suspension of Google Inc.'s email services, saying a national email service for Iranian citizens would soon be rolled out.

An Iranian official said the move was meant to boost local development of Internet technology and to build trust between people and the government.
It wasn't clear late Wednesday what effect the order had on Gmail services in Iran, or even if Iran had implemented its new policy. Iranian officials have claimed technological advances in the past that they haven't been able to execute.

A Google spokesman said in a statement, "We have heard from users in Iran that they are having trouble accessing Gmail. We can confirm a sharp drop in traffic, and we have looked at our own networks and found that they are working properly. Whenever we encounter blocks in our services we try to resolve them as quickly as possibly because we strongly believe that people everywhere should have the ability to communicate freely online."

An Iranian official said the move was meant to boost local development of Internet technology and to build trust between people and the government.

Ahmadinejad hails nuke Iran on Revolution Day
[Al Arabiya Latest] President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad boasted Iran was now a nuclear nation as he announced on Thursday the production of its first highly enriched uranium on the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"One day they said we cannot enrich uranium, but with the resistance of our leader, nation ... and with the help of God, the Iranian nation has become nuclear," Ahmadinejad said.

"They (Americans) want to dominate our region but the Iranian people will never let them do that," he said in a speech at Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square before a crowd of hundreds of thousands.

"The head of the atomic energy organization (Ali Akbar Salehi) said the first stock of 20 percent fuel was produced and delivered to scientists," he added.

Iran had previously enriched uranium to just 3.5 percent but has started enriching it to the higher level required for a Tehran medical research reactor after snubbing a U.N.-drafted plan for the nuclear fuel to be supplied by France and Russia.

Its defiance has drawn Western warnings of new U.N. sanctions.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Wednesday imposed an asset freeze on an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps commander and four subsidiaries of a construction firm owned or controlled by the elite force.

#5  TOPIX > IRAN: WE ARE NOW AMONG THE WORLD'S TOP 15 NUCLEAR STATES [Are NUMBER ONE in entire Muslim World, + ahead even of PAKISTAN in terms of NUCTECHS despite PAK formally having the NucBomb].

Wehell, for the above to true vee PAKISTAN + not simple bluster, IMO broadly infers IRAN may covertly already possess or have NUCLEAR BOMBS-DEVICES OF STILL-SUBJECTIVE POTENCY???

E.g. 1990's to Present > "DUAL USE" CAPABLE CHINESE SILKWORM VARIANTS, UKRAINIAN CRUISE MISSLES, OTHER "BLACK MARKET" OR SECRET SOVEREIGN TRANSFER.

#6  It still comes down to FAILED ANTI-NUC PROLIFERATION EFFORT, + the budding = beginnings of [post-2012] NUCLEAR MILITANCY-TERRORISM-XTREMISM = NUKULAAR JIHAD.

2010-2012 < NUCTEHCS slowly but surely spreads to the various dedic ISLAMIST + WORLD MILTERR, EVEN CRIME?, GROUPS.

2013-2020/2025 > ADVENT OF NON-STATE, ANTI-STATE NUCLEAR TERROR + RELATED WMD-BASED "MASS CASUALTY" MAJOR TERROR EVENT(S) [NBC-CBRNE]

* RUSSIA > FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE SERVICES, NGOS RECRUITING YOUTH FRM RUSS FAR EAST, to undermine Moscow's Govt. authority + destabiliz iff not destroy Russ national integrity.

Again, RUSS' NEW NUKE DOCTRINE allows it to UNILATER OR PREEMPTIVELY STRIKE THE US WID STRATEGIC NUCLEAR WEAPONS [as pertinent]iff it believes that a major extant THIRD-PARTY/PROXY terror event(s) had been ordered e.g. by the USA, andor in the alternate IS ABOUT TO LAUNCHED INSIDE RUSS BY SAME BUT HASN'T OCCURRED YET.

Police attack Iran reformists on Revolution Day
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iran's security forces attacked a number of reformist leaders, including Mehdi Karroubi and ex-president Mohammed Khatami on Thursday as Iranians mark the 31 anniversary of the Islamic revolution, opposition websites reported.

Karroubi's son Hossein told AFP that his father was "not injured but his guards who were accompanying him were."

"They (police and plainclothes men) fired tear gas and were brandishing knives when they clashed with our supporters" before the cleric reached western Tehran's Sadeghieh square from where he was supposed to join the marches.

Rahesabz website reported that also ex-president Khatami's brother Mohammad Reza and his wife were arrested by security forces.

Security forces detained the granddaughter of late revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and her husband, the Jaras opposition website reported.

Zahra Eshraqi and her husband Mohammad Reza Khatami, a brother of reformist former president Khatami, were detained during rallies marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution, the website reported.

State television showed footage of men, women and children carrying banners reading "Death to America! Death to Israel!" as they headed to Azadi (Freedom) Square in southwest Tehran to mark the day the U.S.-backed shah was toppled in 1979.

#1  Remember when Saddam would turn out a big crowd and have them all waving banners saying "Death to America!"? You dont hear from him much anymore (for some reason). And then there was all that Saddam money paid out for Palestinians to Shaheed themselves and their kids. Splodeydopes...at $50,000 a pop....well, a kaboom. Islamic stuff. That sort of thing.

Nasty Jews with their arrogant shopping Malls and their filthy un-islamic freedom to vote. And the vicious Americans who will slap your chops silly from Basra to Beirut.

Allah just cant get no Respect.
