B: Did read Bulldog861974. Revealing. It is usually the pogues/bureacrats/technocrats and not the knuckledraggers or trigger pullers who are the problem. This concept seemms to extend in a general way to many organizations.
See the comments just below Bulldog concerning a civilian investigator, JamesbenGoy. Ego, self-aggrandizement, self-importance, and PC often get in the way of a good mission/objective.
This whole story just doesn't seem to fit together. Maybe some other RBers out there can shed some light on this. Why alcohol? Where did it come from? Why bother retrieving the bullets when there are additional bullets that they couldn't have found but an investigator would? What were pregnant women doing pulling a guy with an AK-47 back into their house? Why the need for outrageous stories by coalition forces when they obviously wouldn't stand up under any kind of scrutiny to anyone with a thermometer and a watch? Why do the locals always insist on burying the "incriminating" evidence so quickly? Why weren't coalition forces aware of the large party? Wouldn't that give them pause for thought? How did they know how many bullets were "recovered"? Don't special forces have cameras recording things as they occur? Why did the Iraqis patch up and paint over the "evidence"? What is this "footage" that the Afghan team collected? Did they get copies from coaltion forces or something? What is this "reliable source"? How did US forces or agents conclude that the women were "already dead for 14 hours"? Wouldn't this take a multi-layered coverup?
US special forces soldiers dug bullets out of their victims' bodies in the bloody aftermath of a botched night raid, then washed the wounds with alcohol before lying to their superiors about what happened, Afghan investigators have told The Times.
Two pregnant women, a teenage girl, a police officer and his brother were shot on February 12 when US and Afghan special forces stormed their home in Khataba village, outside Gardez in eastern Afghanistan. The precise composition of the force has never been made public.
The claims were made as Nato admitted responsibility for all the deaths for the first time last night. It had initially claimed that the women had been dead for several hours when the assault force discovered their bodies.
"Despite earlier reports we have determined that the women were accidentally killed as a result of the joint force firing at the men," said Lieutenant-Colonel Todd Breasseale, a Nato spokesman. The coalition continued to deny that there had been a cover-up and said that its legal investigation, which is ongoing, had found no evidence of inappropriate conduct.
The Kabul headquarters of General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of US and Nato forces, claimed originally that the women had been "tied up, gagged and killed".
A senior Afghan official involved in a government investigation told The Times: "I think the special forces lied to McChrystal."
"Why did the special forces collect their bullets from the area?" the official said. "They washed the area of the injuries with alcohol and brought out the bullets from the dead bodies. The bodies showed there were big holes."
The official, who asked not to be named until the results of the investigation have been made public, said that the assault force sealed off the compound from 4am, when the raid started, to 11am, when Afghan officials from Gardez were finally allowed access to the house.
At least 11 bullets were fired during the raid, the investigator said, and the shooting was carried out by two American gunmen positioned on the roof of the compound. Only seven bullets were recovered from the scene.
"I asked McChrystal, 'why did the Americans clean some of the bullets from the area?' They don't have the right to do that," the official said.
Haji Sharabuddin, the head of the family who were attacked, told The Times last month that troops removed bullets from his relatives' bodies, but his claims were impossible to verify. The hallway where four of the five victims were killed had been repainted and at least two bullet holes had been plastered over.
Video footage of the raid's aftermath, collected by Afghan investigators, shows close-up shots of one man's bloodstained and punctured torso and walls with blood on them. The Afghan official's conclusion that the bullets were removed is based on the testimony of survivors, analysis of the photographs and the missing bullets.
Nato promised a joint forensic investigation in a statement issued after the raid, but Rear Admiral Greg Smith, the coalition's director of communications in Afghanistan, said that this had proved impossible because the bodies were buried the same day in accordance with Islamic custom.
Instead Afghanistan's Ministry of Interior sent its top criminal investigator from Kabul, and a Canadian brigadier-general led a separate military inquiry.
The Afghan investigation differed in one respect from The Times' findings. Survivors told this newspaper that Saranwal Zahir, the police officer's brother, was shot when he tried to shout that his family was innocent. The women, who were crouching behind him, were killed in the same volley of fire. Afghan investigators believe that Mr Zahir was carrying an AK47 and wanted to avenge his brother's killers. The women were clustered around him, trying to pull him inside the house, when the second US gunman opened fire, killing all four of them.
Footage collected by the Afghan team also shows a man in United States Army uniform taking pictures of the bodies. The findings have not been made public. The Interior Ministry is expected to pass a report to the Attorney-General's office, which will decide whether or not it can press criminal charges.
The family had more than 25 guests on the night of the attack, as well as three musicians, to celebrate the naming of a newborn child.
"In what culture in the world do you invite ... people for a party and meanwhile kill three women?" asked the senior official. "The dead bodies were just eight metres from where they were preparing the food. The Americans, they told us the women were dead for 14 hours."
In a statement yesterday, Brigadier-General Eric Tremblay, a Nato spokesman, said: "We deeply regret the outcome of this operation, accept responsibility for our actions that night, and know that this loss will be felt forever by the families.
"The force went to the compound based on reliable information in search of a Taleban insurgent, and believed that the two men posed a threat to their personal safety. We now understand that the men killed were only trying to protect their families." As for the Iraqis, will their machismo ever allow them to learn the lesson not to threaten coalition forces? Just stand there with your hands up and your mouth shut and things should work out fine. It's easy to do, so just do it.

With stories like this it is important to look at a number of factors:
1) Who is writing the story, and the writer's sources
2) What exactly does the story say
3) Read what the text say actually says.
The story text is a mess to begin with. The main sources the writer uses are the head of the household with with victims and anonymous Afghan officials. No telling who is align with whom and to get the story out the writer probably disregarded those "bright lines."
I found it odd that on a "raid" US forces fired 11 shots, which if accurate is an amazing economy of firepower. Apparently the writer failed to enquire if US forces normally carry alchohol with them into combat.
My guess would be the writer did not ask the question, apparently sensing his question would not have been a welcomed one.
If I wanted to pick apart the story further, it would be easy enough. Just suffice it to say the writer goes to some lengths to avoid the appearance of an agenda and to some extent he/she is successful. But, there is an agenda there, we just don't know what it is.

I am so glad the MSM solved this vexing whodunnit. NOT! Seems like there is a rush to judgment here by the press. Best to suspend judgment for awhile until more is known if it can be. In this world of PC, it is difficult to fight a war without getting killed yourself.

LONDON: A British soldier was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on foot patrol on Sunday in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.
The serviceman, from 3rd Battalion The Rifles, was killed in the Kajaki area of Helmand Province. Around 35 service personnel have been killed this year.
Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan, largely battling the Taliban in Helmand.
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry said that four people one man and three women were killed on Sunday evening when their car hit a mine in Ghazni city, also in southern Afghanistan.

A South Korea-operated, Singapore-owned oil tanker has been hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. The 300,000-tonne Samho Dream - loaded with crude oil - was on its way from Iraq to the United States with 24 crew when it was seized on Sunday.
South Korea has sent a destroyer already in the area to intercept the tanker before it reaches any port. The Cheong-hae destroyer was on patrol in the Gulf of Aden, where pirates have often staged attacks. It has been diverted some 1,500 km (930 miles) to the south-east to the area where the hijacking took place.
"The government has dispatched our Cheong-hae naval unit to the waters of the Indian Ocean, where the ship hijacked by Somali pirates is assumed to be," the South Korean foreign ministry said in a statement.
"The ship is presumed to have been hijacked by Somali pirates," the ministry said. It also expressed concern for the safety of the crew - five South Koreans and 19 Filipinos.
The BBC's Korea correspondent, John Sudworth, says local media are reporting that the destroyer, which is part of the naval unit, can travel faster than the super tanker and would be able to reach the ship before it could reach any port.
But any attempt to recapture the ship would be extremely dangerous, our correspondent says. Given that smoking on the decks of oil tankers is not allowed, a gun battle is inconceivable, he adds. Brilliant. That's why we have correspondents, you know ...
The value of the Samho Dream's cargo is estimated at about $170m (£111.7m). Reuters reported that the US refiner Valero Energy Corp said it was the owner of the crude oil cargo.
It said a pirate source named Mohamed had said the ship was now heading for Haradheere, the pirates' base at which many ships are held during ransom negotiations.
At least four South Korean ships have been hijacked by Somali pirates in recent years: a tuna ship with 25 crew in 2006, two ships and 24 crew (held captive for six months) in 2007, and a cargo ship with 22 sailors in September 2008. The crew in that last attack were released after the ship's owner paid a ransom.
The first successful hijacking of what is called a Very Large Crude Carrier was of the Saudi-owned Sirius Star in late 2008. Another VLCC, the Maran Centaurus, was taken last November and held for two months before a ransom estimated at between $5.5m and $7m was paid.

BELFAST - The army in Northern Ireland have defused a car bomb left near a police station that could have killed had it exploded, police said Sunday. The device, which consisted of containers filled with flammable liquid on the rear seats of a vehicle, was left near the gates of the barracks at Crossmaglen, south Armagh, late Saturday.
Had this device exploded I have no doubt that anyone in the immediate area could have been killed or seriously injured,' said Chief Inspector Sam Cordner.
Whoever is responsible showed complete disregard for the lives of police officers and members of the local community. I would like to place on record my thanks to local people and their representatives for their patience and support during the operation to make this device safe.'
The bomb was abandoned in a red Peugeot 406 car in Crossmaglen, a village in the British province of Northern Ireland near the border with the Republic of Ireland.
Cordner appealed for help to track down those who planted the device, urging local people to show these misguided individuals that incidents such as this have no place in today's society.'

North Korea is accusing the South Korean military of firing on North Korean troops guarding the tense land border that separates the two countries.
Because that's so much worse than sending out a mini-sub to sink a South Korean naval vessel. No doubt this accusation resulted in bitter laughter south of the border.
North Korea's state-run news agency says South Korean forces committed what it calls a "grave armed provocation" Sunday. It says they fired toward a North Korean police post in the eastern part of the demilitarized zone. South Korea's military says no such incident took place.
Pyongyang regularly accuses Seoul of raising tensions between the two states, which remain technically at war since a 1953 truce that ended the Korean War.

Six people, including four attackers, were killed when heavily armed militants in two vehicles tried to storm the US consulate in Peshawar on Monday, a Pakistani minister said.
"They came in two vehicles. The militants were well-equipped. It was a well-organised attack," Bashir Ahmed Bilour, senior minister in the North West Frontier Province government headquartered in the city, told reporters.
"The situation is now under control," he said, adding that six people were killed in the attempted attack and subsequent gun battle with Pakistani security services, including four militants and a policeman.
"They (security forces) have killed four militants. Four dead bodies are lying on the spot. The whole area is encircled by the army. The militants were trying to enter the American consulate, but they did not succeed," he said.

BERHAMPUR: Nine jawans of the anti-Maoist Special Operation Group (SOG) were killed and eight others seriously injured in a landmine blast triggered by Maoists in Koraput district of Orissa on Sunday morning.
The attack occurred at Tanginiguda on the Govindpalli ghat road around 10 a.m. The first of three mini buses carrying the SOG jawans took the impact of the massive blast, believed to have been triggered by remote control. The vehicle was thrown 40 feet in the air and its wreckage strewn over 100 metres. A 15-feet deep hole could be seen at the place of the blast.
Sources said a brief exchange of fire took place between the security personnel and the rebels near the blast site. The injured were taken to Baipariguda and later to Jeypore in Koraput district. From there they were flown to Visakhapatnam.
Koraput Superintendent of Police Anup Sahu confirmed the death of nine personnel and injuries to eight. However, the sources said one SOG jawan was still missing till evening.
Reports said there were 19 persons in the vehicle.
The Malkangiri SP and the Koraput SP rushed to the spot. Intense combing operations have been launched in the area. Traffic between Malkangiri and Jeypore was held up for several hours following the blast.
The SOG jawans were on their way from Koraput to Govindpalli in Malkangiri district. They were on a mission to sanitise the Maoist-prone Govindpalli ghat road so that CRPF personnel camping at Govindpalli in Malkangiri district could move from there to Koraput.
This incident occurred while preparations are in full swing for a massive offensive against the naxals in the undivided Koraput district that adjoins the strongholds of the militants in Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
Two battalions of the Border Security Force have reached Malkangiri district and one more battalion is expected. Two BSF battalions are camping in the Koraput district. The CRPF personnel deployed in these areas are being relocated to other naxal-hit districts.

The Pakistani military says its troops have killed nearly 40 militants in two separate attacks Sunday in the northwest region of the country. Officials say both offensives were in the Orakzai tribal area near the Afghan border.
A government official said several dozen militants attacked a village, but troops beat them back, killing many of the insurgents. Hours later, militants and troops battled in another area of the region. A government official says 12 rebels were killed in that fight.
Pakistan's military began an offensive in Orakzai in March to flush out Taliban insurgents believed to have fled an earlier military offensive in South Waziristan.

Baghdad - At least 41 people were killed and 237 wounded Sunday in three suicide car bombings targeting the Iranian and German embassies and the Egyptian Consulate in a span of 30 minutes.
The attacks, which Iraqi government officials blamed on the Sunni Arab extremist group Al Qaeda in Iraq, came two days after unknown gunmen in uniforms massacred 25 people in a Sunni district south of Baghdad.
The bloodshed raises fears that the security situation could unravel before Iraq's next government is formed, as armed groups and political parties look to exploit the uncertain period after last month's national elections. The conditions are reminiscent of early 2006 when Al Qaeda in Iraq took advantage of the transition between elected governments to blow up a major Shiite Muslim shrine and ignite a civil war between the country's Shiite majority and its Sunni minority, which dominated the government of President Saddam Hussein before he was toppled in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
It also came as American forces prepare to draw down to 50,000 noncombat troops by the end of August and are less able to curb tensions between the sides because of their diminishing numbers.
Many of those killed Sunday were motorists and pedestrians near the consular buildings in the capital's central governmental hub and an embassy row in west Baghdad. No diplomats were reported wounded or killed.
None of the compounds were breached, but the force of the blast by the Egyptian Consulate tore down a wall. The deadliest attack was at the Iranian Embassy in central Baghdad, surrounded by key government institutions, where 23 were killed. Eighteen died in the twin bombings at the German and Egyptian missions, located about five minutes apart on Emirat Street in Baghdad's Mansour district.
The road opposite the Iranian Embassy, a stately sand-colored building, was strewn with half a dozen burned vehicles, like a child's messy train set. Caved-in jeeps and sedans, smeared with blood and tiny bits of flesh, were parked by concrete barriers, still plastered with faded posters of politicians from provincial elections a year ago, when Iraq's mood was more optimistic. The packed district, located next to the fortified Green Zone, has been hit by suicide bombers at least four times since August.
The attack on the consulate left three Egyptian officials lightly wounded. An Iraqi policeman charged with security for the embassies of Germany, Syria, Morocco and Tunisia on Emirat Street was killed, along with two other police officers, according to Foreign Ministry officials. At the German Embassy, a guard was killed, and three doctors at a clinic nearby were wounded.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Three members of the Egyptian diplomatic mission were slightly wounded in a blast that targeted the consulate building in Baghdad, said the Iraqi Foreign Ministry in a press release on Sunday.
Terrorist groups carried out today's operations with car bombs targeting the headquarters of some diplomatic missions in Baghdad, including the German embassy and the Egyptian consulate in al-Mansour neighborhood and the Iranian embassy in al-Salhiya neighborhood,' read the release as received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Several policemen guarding these buildings were killed or wounded but none of diplomats were harmed save slight injuries of three members of the Egyptian mission,' it added.
The Egyptian mission had re-started its work in November 2009 under Ambassador Kamal Shaheen, who had been appointed by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to Iraq four years after charge d'affaires Ihab al-Sherif was kidnapped and killed in Baghdad in 2005.
The Iranian embassy had announced that none of its staff was killed or wounded in the blasts that targeted its building.

The Palestinian factions of the Gaza Strip met on Sunday night to discuss prospects for inter Palestinian reconciliation, as well as a possible truce with Israel, Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported on Monday morning. According to the Arab publication, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Democratic Front all participated in the meeting. Representatives of the West Bank-based Fatah movement had been set to attend, but reportedly issued a last-minute cancellation.
Al-Sharq Al-Awsat quoted Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha as saying the meeting constituted the first fruits' of a series of inter-Palestinian talks to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip and lead to the removal of the blockade and Israeli aggression.' He also reportedly urged the international community to take a stand against Israel's threats' and policies against' the Palestinians.
Islamic Jihad official Khaled al-Batsh was quoted as saying the discussion of the core regional issues had also touched upon mechanisms for cooperation and coordination between the Palestinian factions. The aim, he said, was to build a united resistance front.'
Contrary to a Sunday report that the Islamic Jihad movement had decided to temporarily cease launching rockets at Israel in favor of focusing on improving the situation in Gaza, Monday's Al-Sharq Al-Awsat report stressed the terrorist groups' determination to carry out resistance' Israel. Resistance, the leaders reportedly said, would remain a Palestinian right so long as the Israeli aggression toward the Palestinian people persisted.
The movement's spokesman, Daoud Shihab, had told its official radio station in an interview conducted on Sunday morning that the group had stopped firing rockets due to the need to lift the Gaza blockade and alleviate the Palestinians' suffering. According to Israel Radio, his remarks were later removed from the radio station's Web site. Later that day, a high-ranking member of the group told a Palestinian Web site that the organization's military wing would "continue to use rockets according to the circumstances on the ground."
Though they vowed to organize demonstrations against Israel's refusal to release Palestinian prisoners and its Judaization' of Jerusalem and Al-Aksa Mosque, the Gaza leaders also noted that popular resistance' a term designating rioting and other non-military methods of confrontation was not a sufficient alternative to armed resistance,' meaning terrorist attacks.
The leaders reportedly praised the Khan Younis attack of last week, in which Maj. Eliraz Peretz and St.-Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky, both of the Golani Brigade, were killed. Several hours of clashes between IDF tanks and armed Palestinians followed, injuring three soldiers and killing, according to a Gaza medic, two Palestinian gunmen.
