NATO Investigates 3 Afghan Civilian Deaths
KABUL, Afghanistan — NATO said it was investigating allegations that a military convoy had gunned down two Afghan women and a girl in southeastern Afghanistan on Friday, and the French military took responsibility for killing four Afghan children during a missile strike in early April.

The latest allegations of civilian deaths were in some dispute. On Friday, Afghan officials said international forces killed two Afghan women and a girl riding in a car in Zabul Province as they approached a military convoy stopped on the road to remove a buried bomb.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry in Kabul, Zemary Bashary, said “foreign forces' had killed the women in Zabul.

Mohammed Jan Rasool Yar, a spokesman for the Zabul governor, said the Afghan authorities had not determined which military unit shot the women. He said the driver of the car, a man, was wounded and hospitalized.

As troops defused the bomb, Mr. Yar said, a Toyota approached. They “tried to stop them, but they did not stop,' he said, and troops opened fire.
Bad move on the Toyota driver.
But while a NATO spokesman in Kabul said early Saturday morning that one military convoy had fired warning shots at a civilian car, he said that the driver stopped and there were no casualties. The spokesman said that NATO forces were continuing to investigate the allegations of civilian casualties in Zabul, but that they had no confirmation of any involvement by NATO troops.

Also on Friday, the French military said its own investigation found that its forces killed four children during a fight with insurgents on April 6 in Kapisa Province, north of Kabul.

According to Rear Adm. Christophe Prazuck, a French military spokesman, French and Afghan forces were setting up a combat outpost when insurgents attacked in the Bedrau Valley. Forces at a checkpoint returned fire and drove them back, he said.

As the militants regrouped, French observers spotted seven insurgents hidden behind a wall, and troops fired one antitank missile. Thirty minutes later, a civilian vehicle arrived at the checkpoint with four children, ages 10 to 15, said to have been wounded in the attack, and another child who had already died. Three of the wounded children died shortly thereafter.

“The children were near the insurgents and beneath a tree,' Admiral Prazuck said. “No civilian activity had been observed.'

A French military investigation concluded in recent days. No further investigation or punitive measures are planned, Admiral Prazuck said.

Explosions inside a Somali mosque kill at least 30
TWO bombs exploded inside a mosque in Mogadishu's main market, killing 30 people and injuring 70 more, in the first Iraq-style bombing inside a house of worship in Somalia.

The blasts in the Bakara market went off while people were sitting inside the Abdala Shideye mosque waiting for noon prayers.

The bombings highlight the increasingly violent path Somali militants are taking following an influx of insurgents into the country from the Afghanistan conflict, fighters who are now training Somali militants.

Most of the victims were worshippers, said witness Ahmed Abdulle.

"The first one occurred at the back of the mosque and the other one at the front. I saw the dead bodies of at least 11 people and 18 injured," said a businessman, Isma'il Dahir. "The blood stained the walls and human flesh was scattered everywhere."

Ali Muse, the head of Mogadishu's ambulance service, said at least 30 people were killed and 70 wounded. Abdullahi Haji Ilmi, a witness, said he counted 32 bodies.

A high-ranking member of Somalia's most powerful militia, al-Shabab, was said to be inside the mosque during the explosions. It was not immediately known whether Fuad Mohamed Qalaf survived the bombings.

Qalaf is among 11 people whose assets were recently frozen by the United State for involvement in terrorism.

"Sheikh Fuad used to teach religious lessons at the mosque every Saturday. He was there when the blasts went off. The whole area was cordoned of by scores of al-Shabab militants. Nobody could get inside," said another businessman, Farhan Alin.

An al-Shabab spokesman, Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage, blamed the attack on the work of "foreign security companies" whose aim, he said, was to massacre Muslims. Rage offered no proof for his allegation.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the first such bombing of a mosque in Somalia.

It's the 'National Geographic Effect'. Religion gets viewed as a cultural-peculiarity, a kind of bone-through-the-nose thing. Which is also likely why black churches in the US escape the usual derogatory treatment.

Mutinous troops attack Sudan army
At least eight people have been killed when mutinous troops attacked an army base in south Sudan following this month's elections, officials say.

A southern army spokesman said the mutineers backed a former general who ran and lost in a Jonglei state poll. George Athor denied leading the troops but told the BBC he sympathised with them and said the polls were rigged.

The ex-rebel SPLM party won a landslide victory to retain power in the south, amid widespread claims of intimidation.

The BBC's James Copnall in Khartoum says there have been intense negotiations for several days to avoid just this sort of problem in Southern Sudan. Several senior southern soldiers contested the elections as independents and all but one lost.

Mr Athor ran for governor of Jonglei state as an independent when he did not get the SPLM nomination.

The Delab Hill barracks, 12km (7 miles) south of Malakal, were attacked. The army spokesman said weapons were stolen.

"We managed to push back the attackers, but there are seven dead and nine injured among the troops," southern army spokesman Malaak Ayuen Ajok told AFP. "Several attackers also lost their lives."

Malakal was the scene of fierce fighting between rival militias in 2009, and in 2006, which left at least 150 people dead.

Our correspondent says it is too early to tell if this is an isolated incident, or the start of a much bigger problem.

10 killed, 20 hurt in Somalia clashes
MOGADISHU, Somalia, April 30 (UPI) -- Clashes between the Somali al-Qaida affiliate al-Shabaab and pro-government forces killed at least 10 people and injured more than 20, authorities said. The fighting between al-Shabaab and the Sufi militia group Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama, which backs the transitional government, occurred in central Somali villages in the regions of Galgadud and Hiran, Garowe Online reported.

The clashes began in El Bahay in the Galgadud region when al-Shabaab insurgents attacked a village, killing at least six.

"We attacked and captured the area from our foes. It is part of our plans to expand our grip on territories in central regions," an al-Shabaab official said.

Ahlu Sunnah's grand chairman, Ma'alin Mohammud Sheikh Hassan, confirmed fighting but denied losing the area to Al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab also attacked a military base used by government troops and pro-government Ahlu Sunnah in north Beledweyne, the capital of Hiran region. A government official said the insurgents had suffered casualties and were repelled without capturing the base.

Somali Men Plead Not Guilty Over Navy Pirate Attacks
Ten Somali men pleaded not guilty to federal allegations of piracy in connection with attacks on U.S. Navy ships off the coast of Africa.
"Just simple, well-armed fishermen, yer honour, shooting at your navy because of a simple excess of high spirits."
"Yar!"
"Shaddup, you!!!"
The men, captured after exchanging fire with Navy vessels in African waters, faced charges of piracy, conspiracy and assault with a dangerous weapon today in federal court in Norfolk, Virginia. Nine pleaded not guilty, while another had done so earlier this week. The hearing for an additional defendant will be held May 6, said Peter Carr, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. The men were denied bail, Carr said.

Navy personnel captured five of the men March 31 after they fired on the frigate USS Nicholas off Seychelles, according to court papers. The other six were taken into custody after they allegedly attacked the amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland on April 10 off the coast of Djibouti.

The two separate trials have been scheduled for July 6.

The U.S. and its allies agreed this year to consider setting up a system under which suspected pirates could face trials and prison terms outside their home countries.

"Which spot?"
"That spot!"
The Gias spot?
After a gunfight the bullet-hit body of Gias Uddin

the very same spot the police reached
and was taken to Shailokupa upazila health complex.

With Gias, the total number of extra judicial killings rose to 118 in nine months from August 2009 to April 30 of 2010. With this 26 extra judicial killings took place in first four months of the current year of 2010.
Hey! Youse guys are slipping!
Why are we measuring from last August? Did something special happen then?
The last incident of crossfire killing took place in Chittagong on April 16,2010. On that occasion an alleged notorious terrorist was killed in 'shootout' between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members at Anannya residential area under Bayezid Bostami thana in Chittagong early on 16 April
Which as you might expect caught our attention.

Ex-ISI spy Khawaja found dead in North Wazoo
Follow-up.
The bullet-ridden body of former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) official Khalid Khawaja -- who was kidnapped in March -- was discovered in North Waziristan on Friday, with his captors warning that the others kidnapped with Khawaja would meet the same fate if the government did not meet their demands, officials and the captors' spokesman said. "Khalid Khawaja is no more... we had given a deadline for the acceptance of our demands. The ISI and the government didn't take it seriously," said a mail from the Asian Tigers -- a group unheard of before that had claimed to be holding Khawaja, former ISI official Col Imam alias Sultan Amir Tarar and a British journalist of Pakistani origin, Asad Qureshi.

Political authorities in Miranshah told Daily Times by phone that Khawaja's body was discovered seven kilometres south of Mir Ali. "His body was dumped in Karam Kot. He received several bullets in the head and chest," the authorities said. A letter was also found with the body saying, "He (Khawaja) was a US agent and whoever spies for America will meet the same fate."

Separately, Khawaja's wife said she was proud of her husband's 'martyrdom'. "This is not a bad news. This is martyrdom," she told Daily Times by phone.

Separately, police arrested JUI-S leader Shah Abdul Aziz in Bannu where he was involved in negotiations with captors of the three men, local police said. "He was arrested for disrupting peace in the district," a police official said, declining to give more details.

Khawaja was kidnapped in March with militants later claiming responsibility for the kidnapping, accusing the three captives of spying. They demanded the release of Afghan Taliban commanders detained in Pakistan in exchange for them. The kidnappers had earlier released a video in which Khawaja had admitted to spying. In recent years, Khawaja had set up a human rights group focusing on religious causes. A court in February barred the government from sending abroad captured Afghan Taliban leaders, including Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, on a petition filed by Khawaja.

Both Khawaja and his fellow kidnapped colleague were known to have close links with the Taliban and other extremist groups. Col Imam was known to have worked with the US Central Intelligence Agency during the Afghan jihad against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1990s. He had trained many freedom fighters and leaders, including the Afghan Taliban's elusive chief, Mullah Omar. He also served as Pakistani consul general in Herat in western Afghanistan during Taliban rule and only left the country in 2001 when Pakistan officially abandoned the Taliban and joined the US-led campaign against militancy.

One killed, 5 injured in Karachi bombing
KARACHI/LAHORE: At least one man was killed and five others injured when a bomb went off in Karachi's Soldier Bazaar, a private TV channel reported on Friday.

According to the channel, the bomb was fixed to a motorcycle parked near a trash site in Hindu Parra area of Soldier Bazaar. Soon after the blast, power supply in the areawas suspended. Police and the Bomb Disposal Squad reached the scene and initiated a probe into the incident, while the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, the channel added.

Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Zone Ghulam Nabi Memon said the nature of the blast could not be ascertained, as the BDS was inspecting the explosion site.

BDS Sub-Inspector Ghulam Mustafa told Daily Times that they had discovered 150 grammes of explosive material. “The bomb was planted in a plastic box covered with polythene bags. The homemade explosive was connected with a safety fuse suggesting that it was a timed device,' he said.

Irfan Kobra, the station house officer of the Soldier Bazaar Police Station, said that majority of the victims were those who had arrived at the area to attend an engagement ceremony.

1,800 suspected terrorists being interrogated
Boy howdy that's a lot of terrorists. Wonder where they all came from? And why 99% of them are still in the field?
ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Friday told the Senate that around 1,800 suspected terrorists had been arrested from different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on various charges during military operations, while 12 teams were investigating charges against them. On a point of order in the Upper House, Malik said investigation teams were interrogating the detainees and would deal with them according to the law. He said those found innocent would be released, while those guilty would be handed over to local elders on a condition that they will not repeat their crimes. He added that those found guilty of serious crimes would be punished under the law.

Dead or alive -- Hakeemullah no longer in charge: Pentagon
WASHINGTON: The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is no longer being run by Hakeemullah Mehsud, who Pakistani intelligence officials now believe survived a CIA drone aircraft strike in January, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

"I certainly have seen no evidence that the person you speak of (Mehsud) is operational today or is executing or exerting authority over the Pakistani Taliban as he once did. So I don't know if that reflects him being alive or dead, but he clearly is not running the Pakistani Taliban anymore," Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell told a news conference.
If it doesn't matter whether he's alive or dead, I vote for dead ...
I'm sure the Predator operators can use more practice if he isn't.
Pakistan and US intelligence reported the death of the head of the Pakistani Taliban in a CIA drone strike, but recent reports reveal that he may have survived the attack. The reports of Hakeemullah's survival will raise questions about the quality of the intelligence being gathered in the region.

The Taliban on their part always claimed Hakeemullah was alive. They said they were not going to offer any evidence of his survival because doing so could help security forces hunt him down.
Actually, knowing that that Mr. Mehsud isn't dead yet is a very useful bit of information. Had we not known that, we would not now be looking for him, dontchaknow.

Iraq
Militant turncoat leads Iraqis to al-Qaida chiefs
Long piece and worth every bit.
BAGHDAD -- Leery of using a mobile phone, the militant tasked with directing some of Baghdad's deadliest recent bombings would get his orders from al-Qaida in Iraq's leadership by meeting a go-between near a grocery store named Mr. Milk. So after Iraqi security forces nabbed the militant, Munaf Abdul-Rahim al-Rawi, it was to Mr. Milk's store that he led investigators. That was the first step culminating in what Iraqi and American officials called a devastating blow to the terror group: the killing of al-Qaida in Iraq's secretive two top leaders in a raid last week.

In an interview this week with The Associated Press, al-Rawi offered a rare insight into the shadowy terror group that continues to plague Iraq after years of deadly attacks aiming to push the country into civil war.

Al-Rawi's arrest itself was something of a coup for Iraqi security forces. Known by his underlings as "the dictator," al-Rawi commanded al-Qaida operations in Baghdad, and an Iraqi security spokesman confirmed that al-Rawi played a role in a number of attacks, including the August 2009 bombings of several government ministries that killed more than 100 people.

#1  In the 45-minute interview, he shrugged off worries over his fate. "My hope is to enter paradise," al-Rawi said. "One of the investigators said a death sentence is waiting for me. I told him, 'It is normal."'

Maybe we're doing something wrong here. Perhaps instead of thinking of it as threatening to kill them, maybe we should think of it as "offering" to martyr them if they turn themselves in along with good info.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden called the killings a "potentially devastating blow" to al-Qaida in Iraq. But four days later, officials believe al-Qaida struck back in a series of bombings that killed 72 people in Iraq's bloodiest day of the year so far.

What do you mean "but"? It doesn't take anything at all to kill a bunch of innocent people.

Al-Rawi warned that after the two leaders' deaths, al-Qaida in Iraq "will implement revenge operations to prove it's still strong."

You mean desperate, right?

He said he fought against U.S. troops in the brutal April 2004 battle for the western city of Fallujah.

So he must have slipped out of there in a burqua.

He said the terror group often financed itself by extorting money from Iraqi companies.

I hope we are identifying those at risk and staking them out. I'm sure the owner's of these companies aren't happy and wouldn't mind seeing their tormenters suddenly get swept away. Of course, there would have to be protocols put in place to keep these folks safe from vengeful terrorists. Maybe our software could be "programmed with the capability" to identify these businesses so the store owner's wouldn't be so responsible.

Al-Rawi said he decided to confess after his arrest because "security forces already know everything about me and my links." He said, "I felt that it is useless to deny or conceal information."

Gotta love that fatalistic muslim attitude. We can use this, too.

Iraq death toll in April almost same as last year
BAGHDAD - The number of Iraqis killed in violence in April fell slightly month on month but was almost unchanged from 12 months ago, the government said on Friday. Figures compiled by the health, interior and defence ministries showed that 328 people — 274 civilians, 39 police and 15 soldiers — died as a result of attacks in April, only slightly fewer than the 355 killed 12 months ago.

April's death toll, however, was down slightly on March, when 367 people were killed in unrest.

A total of 917 people — 731 civilians, 133 police and 53 soldiers — were wounded last month, the ministries added, an increase on the 747 people who were injured in April 2009.

Al-Qaeda tape allegedly of suicide bomber who killed 7 CIA officers
Radical militant Islamist websites posted a new video Friday containing an audio message purported to be by Humam Al Balawi, the Jordanian doctor turned suicide bomber who killed seven CIA agents in eastern Afghanistan in December.

The audio message, which was produced by as-Sahab, al-Qaeda's media arm, is played over a picture of Al-Balawi and English subtitles with on-screen text that reads: "A message that was delivered on the night before his martyrdom operation against the American intelligence in Khost." For nearly 30 minutes, the speaker in the message makes various arguments addressing those who are "undecided" and "hesitant" to join the armed fight, or jihad, against Western forces in Muslim lands.

In the message titled "O Hesitant One, It Is An Obligation," the speaker talks about "heroic stories," sometimes using personal references such as, "I lived among you for such a long time." In other passages, he speaks to those who may have "hidden" love for jihad. Near the end of his message, the speaker challenges those "undecided brothers" by appealing to their "manhood and chivalry." "We shall send you coded messages" through media outlets to continue the call for jihad, he said.

The message was alleged to have been recorded on December 29, 2009. Al-Balawi struck the U.S. base the following day.

#6  Daughter saw Reba on Broadway a few years ago. The lady stayed and cheerfully signed Playbills until the were done. Unlike so many celebrities she never got the swelled head and attitude that SHE was what made her successful.
