Afghanistan
'40 terror camps near Af-Pak border'
The latest authentication of Pakistans reluctance to rein in terrorists operating out of its territory has come from Russian ambassador to India Alexander M Kadakin: around 40 terror camps are still active in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas and Islamabad is yet to dismantle them.
Kadakin described India as Russias greatest friend
Kadakin, in his second stint as ambassador to India, told TOI in an exclusive interview that this information was based on Russian satellite imagery and intelligence.

"From the information we have, there are about 38 to 40 such terror camps. Earlier they would have these bright green boards declaring the name of the organization like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), they have now removed them. However, the camps still remain, Kadakin said, adding Pakistan had not done enough to get rid of these camps.
Kadakins statement is extremely significant because it corroborates Indian intelligence reports that LeT has become more active in the region and is looking to target Indias interests in Afghanistan. On the developing situation in Afghanistan, Kadakin said Russia was "united 100% with India".
Especially since Obama's dissing them.
"Moderate Taliban is an oxymoron. Its like saying moderate fascist or moderate Nazi. Also, we believe there is greater role for India in Afghanistan as a peace factor than some other countries. Russia too has a greater role and we are ready to train their personnel, reconstruct Soviet-era factories and provide medical help," said Kadakin, who described India as Russias greatest friend.

After his meeting with Russian PM Vladimir Putin in March, PM Manmohan Singh had said India and Russia had agreed to "intensify consultations" on Afghanistan.

Kadakin said Russia did not favour immediate withdrawal of US-led forces from Afghanistan, an opinion that will come as music to Indian ears. "We are not for hastened withdrawal. In fact, if they withdraw immediately, there will be hell in Afghanistan. It is important that at least some semblance of order is maintained before it happens," said Kadakin.

In the past, Russian authorities have said bringing in more troops in Afghanistan would worsen the situation and NATO should leave immediately after finishing its job.

Algeria Qaeda cell leader surrenders
[Maghrebia] The alleged leader of al-Qaeda cell "Katibat El Farouk" surrendered to Algerian security services in order to benefit from national reconciliation, Echorouk reported on Saturday (May 8th). The man reportedly provided information that led to arrests in Boumerdes, Tizi Ouzou and Bouira.

The "El Farouk" cell claimed responsibility for kidnapping an 80-year-old man in the Tizi-Ouzou town of Boghni last March. Pressure from local residents force the group to free the hostage a week later.

Egypt to try five Islamists for Money laundering
[Al Arabiya Latest] Four Egyptians and a Saudi national are to stand trial in Egypt on June 14 on charges of money laundering and funding the banned Muslim Brotherhood, a judicial source told AFP on Sunday. "Their trial will start on June 14 at the emergency High State Security Court. They are accused of funding a banned organization through donations collected abroad," the source said.

The five will be tried after being charged with channeling money through a British-based Islamic charity to fund the movement's activities in Egypt, the source said.

Three of the accused--Saudi national Awad al-Qarni and Egyptians Ibrahim Munir Ahmed Mustafa and Wagdi Abdel Hamid Ghoneim--are to be tried in absentia as they live abroad. The two currently in Egypt are Ashraf Mohammed Abdel Halim, a physician and deputy secretary general of the doctors' syndicate, and Osama Mohammed Soliman who heads a large financial company in Egypt.

The two have been accused of laundering $3.56 million (2.8 million euros) through several bank accounts before supplying the Muslim Brotherhood with the money to fund their activities in Egypt, the source said.

Four of the accused--Qarni, Mustafa, Ghoneim and Abdel Halim--are also accused of supplying the Brotherhood with four million pounds sterling ($5.9 million).

International rights groups have repeatedly criticized the use of emergency courts--set up under the emergency law which has been in place since 1981--which deny the right of appeal. The Muslim Brotherhood is officially banned in Egypt but its members control a fifth of seats in parliament after fielding candidates as "independents."

Belgian woman sentenced on terrorism charges
A Belgian court has convicted a 50-year-old Belgian woman of setting up, directing and financing a terrorist group and sentenced her eight years in prison.

Malika El Aroud and seven others were found guilty Monday and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 40 months to eight years. One defendant was acquitted for lack of evidence.

The nine were arrested in December 2008 after police intercepted an e-mail from one suspect that they said suggested a suicide attack was imminent. Prosecutors have not said where the attack was to occur. The nine defendants had denied the charges in the trial, which opened March 8.

El Aroud's first husband died in a suicide attack on a top anti-Taliban leader in Afghanistan just two days before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.for lack of evidence.

Another German jihadi in Pakistan believed killed
Security authorities in Germany believe that another member of a group of German Islamist insurgents in Pakistan has been killed. Officials wonder whether the deaths will be a deterrent for copycats or whether it will inspire others to sign up for jihad.

A second homegrown Islamist from Germany appears to have been killed in fighting in Pakistan, SPIEGEL has reported. Danny R., a 21-year-old from Berlin, first traveled to Pakistan via Istanbul on Sept. 2, 2009 together with another Islamist. There, he joined a group of insurgents in the porous border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan that has been a hotbed of Taliban and terrorist activity.

German security officials have obtained information suggesting that the man was killed several days ago in Waziristan. The news comes just days after word of the death of Eric Breininger, a German-born convert to Islam who had been wanted by German police on suspicion of belonging to a terrorist cell.

Danny R., who would have turned 22 on May 1, was born in Berlin but had Dutch citizenship. He renamed himself "Elias" after his conversion to Islam and belonged to a group of radical Muslims in Berlin who claimed they wanted to wage jihad, according to officials.

Danny R. had played for a while for the soccer team BFC Alemannia 1890 in the German capital before suddenly disappearing. Authorities are currently investigating whether Danny R. died at the end of April together with Breininger, who was from the western state of Saarland, and a man born in Salzgitter near Hanover named Ahmet M. According to statements made by associates of the men, four jihadists had been traveling in a car near the city of Mir Ali in Pakistan, when they were stopped and then killed during an exchange of gunfire with soldiers.

Only a few days later, Breininger's alleged memoirs were posted on the Internet. In them, he describes his conversion and his transformation into a fervent Islamist. German security officials believe the work to be authentic and are now monitoring the impact of the latest developments on the Islamist scene in Germany. Will the deaths dissuade other German converts considering making the journey to Pakistan? Or will the war reports merely serve to attract other volunteers fascinated by the stories?

In Berlin alone last September, in addition to Danny R. and his wife, two other young couples made their way to Waziristan. And in recent years, at least six militant Islamists from Germany are known to have died in the Hindu Kush mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

#1  I think that some additional labels are necessary. For example, if a Pakistani moves to Germany and becomes a citizen, then commits terrorist acts, he is *not* "a German", he is " a ____________".

Conversely, if someone who is ethnically French loses their marbles, converts to Islam, travels to Pakistan after renaming themselves "Mohammed", they should not be called "French", but "a __________".

I just use German and French as examples, but this could apply to other nations as well. Somali US citizens in Minnesota, for example, who go back to Somalia for jihad, should not be called "Americans".

Alleged terrorist recruiter sought by Morocco caught in France
[Maghrebia] The suspected ringleader of a Morocco terror network that allegedly recruited suicide bombers and guerrilla fighters for Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and the Sahel-Sahara region was arrested in France, Yabiladi reported on Friday (May 7th).

French-Moroccan Ahmed Sahnouni, 40, was indicted Wednesday in Paris on terrorism charges. The 24 members of his alleged cell were arrested in Casablanca and other Moroccan cities last month. The suspects are accused of planning to commit "assassinations and acts of sabotage against the security services and foreign interests in Morocco".

India-Pakistan
'Banned' Pak jihadi groups operate out in the open
The leader of Jaish-e-Muhammad, one of Pakistan's most feared militant groups, recently drew hundreds of worshipers to the Batha Mosque, where the theme of speeches and sermons often covers the same topic: holy war against the West. Young men streamed into the beige building in north Karachi chanting "God is great!" on the day Maulana Masood Azhar spoke. Though Jaish-e-Muhammad has been banned in Pakistan since 2002, local police officers joined mosque guards in cordoning off the garbage-strewn dirt lanes surrounding the mosque and providing security for the rally. "They had metal detectors checking people going in," said Ali Khan, 27, who works at a barber shop about 50 yards from the mosque's white iron gate. "The people in this mosque, their main focus is jihad."

In Karachi, banned militant groups routinely dispatch workers to mosques where they have strong followings to pass out jihad pamphlets and compact discs, said Raza Hassan, a Karachi-based crime reporter for Dawn, a Pakistani English-language newspaper. "Authorities have not come down hard on Jaish-e-Muhammad or any of these banned outfits," Hassan said. "They seem to lack a policy."

If there has been a policy, it has been one that publicly condemns certain militant groups while discreetly allowing them to function under the radar. To facilitate their operations, some extremist organizations have created humanitarian front groups with different names that raise funds for building schools and healthcare clinics. What's not known is how much of that money gets channeled to militant activities. "Usually when the government bans these militant groups, they suddenly start welfare work," said Yusuf Khan, a Karachi-based analyst. "During the earthquake in Kashmir in 2005, Jaish-e-Muhammad began helping people and rebuilding. That's their technique: to become philanthropic and get sympathy."

One reason groups such as Jaish-e-Muhammad are allowed to operate is because historically they have set their primary target as India, Pakistan's nuclear-armed rival, experts said. Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant group alleged to have engineered the 2008 attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people, is banned in Pakistan but continues to operate under the banner of Jamaat-ud-Dawa, which runs hospitals and schools throughout the country. Though the West regards Lashkar-e-Taiba as a terrorist organization, the group's founder, Hafiz Saeed, moves freely through Pakistan and periodically delivers sermons at a mosque in Lahore.

U.S. officials and others in the West worry that Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba may be operating training compounds in Pakistan's volatile tribal belt along the Afghan border. Experts doubt that the Shahzad case will prod Pakistani authorities to crack down on those groups. "I'm afraid it will be life as normal," said Yusuf Khan. "There is a lot of sympathy among many in law enforcement for these people. You cannot wipe this out."

Jaish-e-Muhammad's leader, Azhar, lives in Bahawalpur, a southern Punjab city and the militant group's home base. When he comes to Karachi, he usually heads to the North Nazimabad neighborhood, where he makes periodic appearances at the Batha Mosque, Ali Khan and other residents said. Shopkeepers and neighbors near the mosque's 10-foot perimeter wall said they tolerate a nervous co-existence with the mosque. "We're always fearful that something's going to happen there," says Shahzad Ali, a 35-year-old grocery shop owner, "and that in the process, we'll become victims."

Dronezap waxes at least 10 in Pakistain
[Al Arabiya Latest] U.S. drone aircraft fired two missiles into a Taliban compound in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on the Afghan border on Sunday, killing at least 10 militants, Pakistani security officials said.
Expands on yesterday's report...
The strike took place in Inzarkas village, 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district, known as a hub for Taliban and al-Qaeda linked militants.

"The missiles struck a militant compound in the village, killing at least 10 rebels," a senior Pakistani security official in the area told AFP on condition of anonymity.

It was the second drone missile strike on militants in northwest Pakistan since a failed bid to set off a car bomb in New York's Time Square last weekend.

Pakistan publicly objects to attacks by CIA pilotless aircraft, saying they are a violation of its sovereignty and fuel anti-U.S. feelings, which complicate Pakistan's efforts against militancy. Unofficially, however, analysts say Pakistan is cooperating with the United States in identifying at least some of the militant targets attacked by the drones.

Last Monday, three militants were killed in a similar strike in North Waziristan.

Iraq
At least 99 killed in attacks across Iraq
A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a textile factory Monday in a crowd that gathered after two cars bombings at the same spot in the worst of a series of attacks killing nearly 100 across Iraq, the deadliest day this year.

The most deadly incident was an afternoon bombing in the Shiite city of Hillah, the capital of Babil province 60 miles (95 kilometers) south of Baghdad. A suicide bomber with explosives strapped to his belt blew himself up among a crowd trying to help victims of two car bombs that went off earlier outside a textile factory, said Babil provincial police spokesman Maj. Muthana Khalid.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran seizes Iraqi boats, crew
Six Iraqi boats and their 12 crew members have been captured by Iranian border guard forces for illegally entering Iran's territorial waters in the Arvand River.

Iranian border guards stopped the Iraqi vessels, which were disguised as fishing boats, and transferred them to an Iranian coastal pier, Fars News Agency reports.

Twelve vessel crews have been escorted to an Iranian border unit base for questioning, said Iranian Boarder Guard Commander Yadollad Sharaffi in an interview. He also reiterated that his forces would not allow anyone to cross into Iranian territory illegally.

The Arvand River is a 200-Kilometer long stretch of water, also known as Shatt-al-Arab in Arabic, at the Iran-Iraq border.

Both countries have long sought to establish a clear marking of their borders along the long stream with a varying width of 400 to 1500 meters.

Technical teams from Iran and Iraq are currently working on the issue. An initial meeting was held last February 20 in the western Iranian border city of Qasr-e-Shirin.

Its like the proverbial drunk trying to start a fight .. Everyone knows he'll get flattened but let him persist with his folly as its entertaining . But alas the entertainment became tedious 10 years ago .

I say lets' up the anti and start pushing their buttons instead of the other way round all the time

Iran hangs five for being 'enemies of God'
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iran hanged on Sunday five people, including a Kurdish woman, convicted of bombing government offices and a gas pipeline to Turkey and described as "enemies of God", state media reported.

The five, including the woman Shirin Alamhouli, were executed in Tehran's Evin prison, IRNA news agency said, quoting a statement from the capital's prosecution office. The four others who were hanged were Farzad Kamangar, Ali Heidarian, Farhad Vakili and Mehdi Eslamian.

"They were convicted of carrying out terrorist acts, including bombings of government centers and public properties in several Iranian cities," the prosecutor's office said without giving the location of the bombings.

Alamhouli, Kamangar, Heidarian and Vakili belonged to the Kurdish minority of Iran, according to the European Union and several websites that report on human rights issues.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has previously said that Kamangar, a teacher, had been sentenced to death for having links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has fought a deadly insurgency against Turkey.

The incidents appeared to have taken place before disputed elections last year that gave President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a second term in office, creating a protest movement the authorities have tried to crush.

Kamangar, Heidarian and Vakili were given the death penalty in 2006 and their sentences were condemned by the European Union.

Some websites have reported that Alamhouli, 28, was arrested in May 2008 in Tehran and charged with having ties with PJAK, an offshoot of PKK.

The websites said the fifth convict Eslamian was arrested in May 2008 for having links with the monarchist group Kingdom Assembly of Iran.

His younger brother reportedly was hanged two years ago for his role in the bombing of a mosque in the southern city of Shiraz in April 2008 which left more than a dozen dead and 200 wounded.

Kingdom Assembly of Iran is an Iranian opposition group to the Islamic regime. It aims to restore the constitutional monarchy that was abolished by the 1979 revolution.

The latest hangings bring to at least 61 the number of people executed in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP count based on news reports. Last year, at least 270 people were hanged.
