An American armed with a pistol and a 40-inch sword was detained in northern Pakistan and told investigators he was on a solo mission to kill Osama bin Laden, a police officer said Tuesday.

The man was identified as 52-year-old Californian construction worker Gary Brooks Faulkner, said officer Mumtaz Ahmad Khan.

#6  Guys like that always do more harm than good. At least he did not get as far as Jack Adima. If he wants to do the right thing he should join the Army, the agency, but not like this. Now he will be used as a propaganda tool against us. Which is pretty minor, I agree. But now he is in Jail, our state dept is having to deal with him and our opponents, diverting their time to this. Worse yet he could have been captured by the Taliban and we would have had to rescue him putting real patriots in harms way.

All of this aside, OBL is in Iran not Pakistan.

Wow...talk about flaming. But hey, you nailed it with a breathtaking soliloquy of literary eloquence: The comment alluded to the super-duper, double-dog-dare, uber-secret CIA program of sending 'questionable assets' (i.e., 'mental patients') to dazzle & confound the enemy on the ground. So, when yours actually drop, know 2 things: 1. You don't know anything about anyone here (certainly not about my resume) and, 2. It's called 'sardonicism', aka, SARCASM.

You, sir, may pick up your travel orders @ 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, DC. Pack for high altitude/desert and bring a Pashto & Dari literary guide. And grow a beard, (if you can). Sword is optional, but not recommended. It would be helpful to practice PLF as well...

#20  Whether Osama is in Iran or Packistan, after 9 years, I have no doubt he is concerned about those under orders from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, DC.. Because, they aren't allowed to go into Iran or the death valleys and mountains of Pakistan and Osama is smart enough to be where those people are allowed to be.

What Osama is worried about, are individuals like Faulkner on a persoanl mission for revenge, answering to no one, ready to die feeling Heaven is a much greater place than this place. I don't think he will put others in harms way because they won't know what he is doing, and he won't let them know.

The greatest Jihadist today, Osama, could be getting his first taste of terror, knowing a lone wolves, just as suicidal and "crazy" as his Martyrs, are coming for him.

Insurgent attacks kill 18 Afghan policemen
[Dawn] Taliban insurgents killed 18 policemen in a series of attacks across Afghanistan in recent days, the interior ministry said on Monday.

Ten police were killed in an attack on Sunday on an outpost in Dai Kundi province in central Afghanistan, the ministry said, while six officers were killed in a roadside bomb attack in southern Kandahar on Saturday.

Two others died in an attack in the south.

Some 21 militants were killed in the Dai Kundi clash, the ministry said. The Taliban could not be reached for comment.

The Taliban insurgency is at its strongest since the hardline group was overthrown in 2001 and 38 foreign troops have died in Afghanistan this month alone.

Arabia
Yemen says thwarts al-Qaeda plot in oil province
[Al Arabiya Latest] Yemen has thwarted an al-Qaeda plot to attack vital installations in a province that is home to much of the country's oil resources and a key pipeline that ferries crude to the coast, the defense ministry said on Monday.

The ministry's online newspaper said security forces had destroyed an al-Qaeda hideout in the Maarib province and foiled a "plot on the verge of implementation to target economic and government installations and army camps".

It did not say what installations were being targeted.

Yemen, strategically located next to top oil exporter Saudi Arabia, has been a major Western security concern since a Yemen-based al-Qaeda wing claimed responsibility for a failed December attempt to bomb a U.S.-bound plane.

Yemen's Western allies and Saudi Arabia fear a resurgent al-Qaeda wing could exploit unrest to use impoverished Yemen as a base for destabilizing attacks in the region and beyond. They want Sanaa to resolve internal conflict and consolidate power.

Tension has been high in Maarib, east of the capital, since a Yemeni mediator who was also Maarib's deputy governor was killed in May in an errant air strike targeting al-Qaeda, prompting clashes between his kinsmen and government troops.

Al-Qaeda plot
The announcement that authorities had foiled an al-Qaeda plot followed several days of gun battles between Yemeni forces and militants in Wadi Obeida, a suspected militant stronghold in Maarib.

At least one person was killed and around 20 more wounded in fighting and shelling in the area, according to the government. Tribesmen suspected of being aligned with al-Qaeda later blew up a crude pipeline linking Maarib to the Red Sea coast.

Tribal leaders, however, have given higher casualty tolls in the government's assault, launched on Wednesday with the stated aim of catching suspected al-Qaeda gunmen thought to be behind an ambush of a military convoy that killed a commander and a soldier.

Al-Qaeda members, many of whom hail from local tribes, have forged links with Yemen tribesmen in efforts to establish a support base in the Arabian peninsula country, where government control is weak in many areas outside the capital Sanaa.

The defense ministry said authorities had identified militants responsible for bombing the pipeline on Saturday.

"Those who blew up the pipeline are a dangerous and wanted group of al-Qaeda elements," the defense ministry's report said, saying their ranks included Yemenis and at least two Saudi nationals.

In addition to fighting al-Qaeda, Yemen also faces growing unrest from southern separatists and is trying to cement a fragile truce with northern Shiite rebels.

Caribbean-Latin America
Sinaloa: 28 Inmates Die in Mazatlan Prison
Babelfish;

A hat tip to Nota Roja for additional details.

Mexican authorities say 28 inmates were killed in the Sinaloa prison García Ruiz Monday morning in an attack they call a directed attack against the criminal gang Los Zetas, say Mexican news sources.

Conflicting reports say the attack was between Los Zetas and the Sinaloa drug cartel, while others say the initial attack was directed against members of the Los Zetas.

Eighteen of the initial victims were found in Security Module 21, while the rest were found in Module 11 and Module Five.

Three guards overseeing the modules were wounded with gunfire. Two of the guards were detached from the Preventativo Estado Policia (PEP).

Police and elements of the Mexican Army and Mexican Navy seized two pistols, a revolver and an AK-47.

Unofficial reports put number of wounded inmates at between 50 and 60.

Investigators say the killers entered the Module to kill the first 18, and then returned to their cells. Authorities have little idea who the killers were.

Before the attack the prison housed 1,650 inmates, most of them federal convicts.

China-Japan-Koreas
Defending June 15 declaration only way to avert war, sez Norks
SEOUL, June 14 (Yonhap) -- North Korea claimed Monday that defending and implementing the inter-Korean joint declaration of June 15, 2000 is the only way of avoiding an all-out war on the Korean Peninsula.

"The situation on the Korean Peninsula is so tense that an accidental single gun shot may trigger off an all-out war," Yang Hyong-Sop, vice president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, asserted in a report at a meeting held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the inter-Korean joint declaration in Pyongyang.

"Defending the inter-Korean joint declaration and thoroughly implementing it is the only way of settling the grave situation created due to the reckless moves of the anti-reunification forces to provoke a war," Yang was quoted as saying by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

"The puppet conservative group (in the south) would be well advised to stop behaving recklessly, mindful that it will face a merciless punishment by the DPRK and have to pay a dear price if it shows any slightest move for 'punishment' and 'retaliation' in league with foreign forces," he said, adding that "U.S. and Japanese reactionaries should stop at once all the hostile acts against the DPRK."

Home Front: WoT
Petraeus Doing Well After Collapse During Senate Hearing
H/T Hotair.com
U.S. General David Petraeus, who briefly collapsed during a Senate hearing on the war in Afghanistan Tuesday morning, is alert and doing well, according to reports.

Petraeus, 57, had finished telling Sen. John McCain that he believes the planned 2011 drawdown of U.S. troops remains on track, and McCain was responding when the room fell silent and aides began crowding around the four-star general.

Petraeus, who oversees the war in Iraq and Afghanistan as head of U.S. Central Command, briefly put his head on the table, then rose, appearing dazed. He stood under his own power and was escorted from the room.

Sen. Carl Levin, the chairman, suspended the hearing until Wednesday out of concern for Petraeus' health.

As the general left the Capitol today, he told reporters that he will be back to testify tomorrow when the hearing resumes.

"I'll eat breakfast tomorrow," he said.

Petraeus himself returned to the room briefly and told the senators he "was feeling a little bit light-headed there."

"It wasn't Sen. McCain's question," the general added.

In his lengthy appearances before the Senate and House armed services committees in September 2007 to testify on Iraq, he was reported to have endured great back pain and got through it with the help of Motrin.

Petraeus is the commander of U.S. Central Command. He was testifying on the war in Afghanistan.

Weapons found in SUV trying to enter MacDill, officials say
24 hour rule. Perhaps the two were planning to knock off Fort Knox and took a wrong turn.
Update: 11:00 CST from St. Petersburg Times

A man who tried to enter MacDill Air Force Base with a cache of military gear and weapons Monday night is an active duty member of the military listed absent without leave, a base official said Tuesday.

The official, speaking at a news conference, did not identify the man and woman who he said tried to enter the base in an SUV that contained three rifles, three handguns and ammunition Monday evening.

Their motive for accessing the base remains under investigation, said Col. Dave Cohen, 6th Air Mobility Wing vice commander.

"At this point there is no indication that it is a terrorist act," Cohen said.
-----------------------------------------
A man and a woman are in custody after officials say they tried to enter MacDill Air Force Base in a sport utility vehicle carrying weapons and military gear, base officials said. Base officials haven't heard that it was a planned attack.
So, they expect to be informed when a attack is planned?
A News Channel 8 reporter on scene at the base saw at least 13 loaded rifle magazines and two pistol magazines in a bag. Authorities also found military clothing and other military-style equipment in the grayish blue Honda CRV driven by the suspects. No explosives were found.

Additional: The SUV was stopped at the Bayshore gate around 5 p.m., and when a man and woman inside the SUV were unable to show proper identification, their vehicle was searched. Inside, authorities found military-style gear and weapons.
One of the guns appeared to be a sniper rifle. Authorities also found an extensive amount of ammunition, including at least 14 magazines.

No bombs or explosive devices were found inside the SUV. The couple was taken into custody. Military officials have not released their names. The SUV was light blue and had Kansas plates.

10 Connects has learned there may already be heightened security at the base because a number of high-ranking officers are there for Special Operation Forces week. 'SOF week,' as it's called, is a convention for special forces, which include the military's most elite troops such as Green Berets, Delta Force and Army Rangers. The units are spread all over the world, but MacDill oversees their overall command.
Ah, a light dawns. "Honey, the guys I used to work with are having a convention down at MacDill. Let's drive down and join the party. Bring the guns, I'm sure we can get in some range time."

Or not: TAMPA -- A man who tried to enter MacDill Air Force Base with a cache of military gear and weapons Monday night is an active duty member of the military listed absent without leave, a base official said Tuesday.

The official, speaking at a news conference, did not identify the man and woman who he said tried to enter the base in an SUV that contained three rifles, three handguns and "a tremendous amount of ammunition" Monday evening.

Their motive for accessing the base remains under investigation, said Col. Dave Cohen, 6th Air Mobility Wing vice commander. "At this point there is no indication that it is a terrorist act," Cohen said.

About 5 p.m. Monday, security crews searched the couple's vehicle and found, among the military-style gear and weapons, a dozen rifle magazines, a few long bags that are used to hold rifles, military clothing, duffel bags and boxes of ammunition, after the vehicle was stopped at the Bayshore Boulevard gate , said Katherine B. Holt, a MacDill spokeswoman.

The search started after they apparently showed security guards fraudulent identification, Cohen said. "There was something not right about them," he said.

The man and woman are in their mid-20s. Cohen did not discuss their relationship. Any charges against the man will likely be handled his chain of command, which has also not been released.

#1  Could it be they were doing the old classic slip past the guards and set-up an arms and uniform stash for others to come in later to use and shoot up more un-armed US based troops, like Ft Hood????

#2  MacDill is home of US Central Command and USSOCOM. I have my doubts about this particular incident, but I do fear we've not seen the last of the Fort Hood massacre business.

400 Egyptians turned away from Gaza border
Hundreds of Egyptian activists ended a sit-in along the Rafah border crossing on Sunday, Egypt's state-run Daily News reported, after being denied entry into Gaza.

Demonstration organizer Omar Abdullah told the Daily News that some 400 opposition group and union members headed to the newly opened crossing on Friday in five buses loaded with food and aid, to protest what he said was a government ban on the group, preventing them from entering Gaza.

"We were told that the Palestinian officials were busy preparing for the visit of Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa to Gaza [on Sunday] and could not receive this number of activists," Abdullah, a Muslim Brotherhood movement member, told the newspaper, saying he believed Palestinian officials were pressured to reject the visit.

Abdullah said the aid was seized by Egyptian officers as the convoy headed north to Gaza, and was reprotedly told that the goods would be transferred into Israel via the Al-Ouja crossing, then transferred into Gaza.

"Such an act reflects bad intentions," Abdallah was quoted as saying about the move.

Hebron: Al-Aqsa brigades opened fire over flotilla raid
A group within the Fatah-affiliated Al-Aqsa Brigades claimed responsibility for opening fire at an Israeli patrol car in Hebron, killing an officer on Monday morning, as Israeli forces heavily deployed in the area in response to the attack.

A statement issued by the Imad Mughaniyeh group said it fired toward the patrol car near the Al-Fawwar refugee camp south of Hebron, killing one officer and injuring three others, in response to Israel's deadly raid on Gaza-bound aid fleet, killing nine passengers on board two weeks ago.
More Palestinian than thou. How quaint.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Jihad movement praised the assault, which they said "proved Palestinian fighters are keen on resistance ... all Palestinians have the right to resist and the right to reject negotiations," a party statement read.
"Thump your chests louder, lads -- show 'em what you're made of!"
Shots were fired by Israeli forces invading towns and villages around the Al-Fawwar refugee camp following the gun attack south of the illegal Israeli settlement of Haggay on Monday morning.
Since by Palestinian definition, if it's Israeli it's illegal, regardless of actual facts.
Reports from several nearby Palestinian villages and towns, including Dura and As-Samu, said troops stormed the areas, apparently looking for unidentified gunmen.

The entrance of the Al-Fawwar camp was blocked, a Palestinian motorcyclist identified as Hasan Arqoub was detained in Dura, and a busload of students were prevented from traveling to school by a roadblock. The students were due to take their high school exit test.
No doubt the students were devastated.
According to the Israeli news site Ynet, a "massive security and rescue forces have been dispatched the area," looking for those who perpetrated the attack, which left one officer dead and at least two others injured, Israeli media reported.

"This was definitely a terrorist attack," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told Haaretz about the incident.

Israeli media said a car of police officers was "ambushed" by unknown gunmen south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

Southeast Asia
Four more killed in attacks in Thai south
Terrorists Suspected Islamic militants have killed four more people in southern Thailand, police said Tuesday, as a string of attacks in the restive region prompts warnings of escalating violence.

The spate of bomb and shooting incidents across three Muslim-majority southern provinces -- which also left 11 wounded -- included a roadside explosion outside a school that killed a 26-year-old army corporal on patrol. Twelve people have been killed so far this month by terrorists suspected Islamic insurgents in southern Thailand -- almost one a day -- after a relative lull in attacks in May, when 20 people died, according to police figures.

Experts said the jihadis militants appeared to be trying to boost their profile again after being overshadowed by two months of anti-government protests in Bangkok that ended on May 19. "The insurgents are trying to show that they remain relevant, that they are still capable of carrying out attacks," said Sunai Phasuk, an analyst at Human Rights Watch. "There also seems to be an ongoing campaign of radicalisation using allegations of human rights abuses to justify attacks."

He added that the terrorists insurgents appeared to have stepped up their campaign in response to the death in custody of 25-year-old Sulaiman Naesa, found hanged at Ingkhayuth military camp on May 30. "We fear that there will be a cover up and this will play into the hands of insurgents who use it to justify attacks," Sunai said.

8 years in jail for terror plots
[Straits Times] AN INDONESIAN court on Monday sentenced the driver of late terror leader Noordin Mohammed Top to eight years' jail for abetting terrorism and plotting to assassinate the president.

Amir Abdillah, 34, was convicted of concealing information about Malaysian-born Islamist Noordin and of taking part in preparations for a bomb attack on the convoy of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The sentence was lighter than the 10 years sought by prosecutors because he had cooperated with police and shown regret, the court heard.

'It's true he assisted in surveying the route which would be used by the president's vehicle convoy. It's true he knew about the plot to bomb the vehicle convoy,' chief judge Sudarwin told the South Jakarta district court.

Abdillah was arrested in the wake of twin suicide bombings on luxury hotels in Jakarta last July which killed seven people, the last in a series of deadly attacks blamed on Noordin and his extremist network. Police killed Noordin in a raid in September, ending one of South-east Asia's biggest manhunts.

Despite the court's leniency, Abdillah expressed little remorse as he spoke to reporters after the sentence had been handed down. He also claimed he was innocent of the most serious charges, including plotting to kill President Yudhoyono.

10 foreigners deported for reviving holy war
[Straits Times] TEN foreigners have been deported from Malaysia for trying to recruit students to wage holy war overseas, a top police official said on Monday.

Musa Hassan, inspector-general of police, said the militants were detained earlier this year for trying to revive the defunct Jemmah Islamiyah (JI) terror group by attracting new members from Malaysian universities.

The regional organisation has been linked to Al-Qaeda and blamed for major attacks in Southeast Asia including the 2002 Bali bombings.

'The JI members, who were harboured by locals, were arrested at various locations six months ago and have been deported,' Mr Musa was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

Mr Musa did not disclose the nationalities of the 10 suspects or say when they were deported. He could not be reached for comment.

The JI members had tried to recruit 20 to 30 university students and youths to take part in a holy war abroad, he said. 'This trend is very worrying as it shows that these militant elements have changed their tactics and strategies in recruiting new members,' Mr Musa said.
