Afghanistan
Taliban Attack Barg-e-Matal District in Nooristan
[Quqnoos] 14 Taliban insurgents were killed and another 5 were arrested in an attack on the Barg-e-Matal district of the eastern Nooristan province

Two Afghan policemen were also wounded in these attacks that were carried out on Saturday evening, said the Chief of Barg-e-Matal, Maulawi Muhammed Ismail.
The Afghan police have been standing up to a lot of attacks lately. I wonder what the Special Forces teams have been doing while everyone's attention is focussed on showier things?
"The opposition forces attacked the district at five in the evening, and fighting continued between our forces and the insurgents for 2 to 3 hours," Mr. Ismail told Quqnoos.

He added that the fight is over now, and the area is under government control.

Barg-e-Matal district came under Taliban control after a week of clashes between Taliban and the Afghan police, about three weeks ago, which was recaptured by the government within three days.

Arabia
Yemen arrests mastermind of deadly Aden attack
[Al Arabiya Latest] Yemeni authorities have captured the mastermind of a suspected al-Qaeda attack on the intelligence headquarters in the southern city of Aden that killed 11 people, the defense ministry said on Sunday.

"The security services have ... (captured) the leader of the terrorist gang that attacked the intelligence headquarters costing the lives of intelligence agents, women and children," the ministry said on its 26sep.net website.

It identified the captured man as Goudol Mohammed Ali Naji, and said he was a member of al-Qaeda.

Seven military personnel, three women and a child were killed in Saturday's attack in the port city of Aden, officials said.

Yemen's higher security committee, in an official statement, said preliminary investigations indicated the attack carried the hallmark of Al-Qaeda, the state news agency Saba reported.

The website said Naji had a long record of terrorist and criminal activities, and was involved in an attack late last year on the central bank in Aden in which 100 million riyals (460,000 dollars, 388,000 euros) was stolen.

Saturday's deadly attack was apparently intended to free prisoners, but authorities said none were in the building at the time.

Witnesses said the assailants were seen leaving the building in a bus, taking people who had been detained there with them, in what appeared to be a coordinated and well-planned operation.

There were no casualties among the attackers, the witnesses said.

Last week, the Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula urged Yemen's eastern tribes to rise against the government and threatened retaliation for alleged air strikes in the area, the US monitoring group SITE said on Friday.

Ongoing drug and gang violence claimed the lives of 16 people over the weekend, including a mayor from a small town in Chihuahua, and a police chief and his bodyguard in Sonora.
  • A family of three were stabbed to death in their home in Chihuahua, Chihuahua Saturday, according to Mexican news reports.

Mexican press reports say Guadalupe has been the focus of a number of shootings.

The death represents the third supporter of the PRI to have been shot in three weeks. Two weeks ago two election workers for PRI gubernatorial candidate César Duarte were shot within ten days of each other.

Statewide and local offices in several northern Mexican states are up for grabs in the election set for July 4th.

The first shooting took place near the intersection of calles 15th and Ojinaga in the Villa Juarez district of Chihauhua at the El Pariente Tacos and Lonches.

Less than two hours later three men were shot while riding in their Chevrolet Trailblazer near the intersection of calles Arco del Carrusel and Cebada in the Los Arcos district of Chihuahua. Witnesses say the shooters were riding in a Dodge Stratus. Two of the victims died at the scene while the third is not expected to survive.

  • Two unidentified people were shot to death in separate instances in Chihuahua Saturday afternoon, according to Mexican news reports.

The first shooting involved a young person near the intersection of calles Hermanos Flores Magón and Ché Guevara in the Revolución district.

The second shooting took place when an unidentified man was shot to death as he entered a commercial establishment in the Campobello district from a moving car.

  • Two partially identified construction workers were shot to death aboard their pickup truck near a job site in Juarez Saturday evening, say Mexican news reports. • Four people were shot to death in two separate attacks Friday in Heromsillo, Sonora, say Mexican new accounts.

Mario Madueño López, Antonio Núñez Pino and Armando Bejarano Yescas of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora were attacked by a pair of armed suspects near an Oxxo convenience store near the intersection of calles 16 de Septiembre and Altar de Sonoyta at about 1430 hrs. Two of the victims were shot aboard their Ford pickup truck while the third was killed close by. The armed suspects were apparently riding aboard a Jeep Cherokee and used AK47 assault rifles in the attack.

A fourth victim was murdered earlier the same day at about 1050 hrs identified as Jorge Mitre Vitar Tosola.

  • The director of Puerto Penasco, Sonora Municipal Police was shot and wounded along with a bodyguard in a late night attack Saturday night, according to Mexican news accounts.

Erick Landagaray Macías and his bodyguard, Luis Ibarra, were shot multiple times aboard Macías' official Ford F-150 pickup truck with an AK-47 assault rifle at about 2235 hrs. Macías' current condition is not known.

#1  Assault rifles are illegal in Mexico but are frequently being used to murder people.
Assault rifles are pretty much legal in the US but are not used very often to commit crimes.
Solution: ban assault weapons in the US
Yeah, that's about right.

Turkish troops enter Iraq after Kurd rebel attacks
[Al Arabiya Latest] Turkish forces pushed into northern Iraq on Sunday, killing four people, including a 15-year-old girl, as they retaliate against hideouts of Kurdish rebels who killed 12 soldiers in the deadliest spell of violence in two years.

The ground incursion into Iraq came after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to fight the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) "to the end" in response to what he called the "cowardly" assault by its fighters.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday Kurdish militants would "drown in their own blood" as he lead political and army chiefs in paying respects to troops killed in a clash with the rebels.

PKK spokesman Ahmed Denis hit back with a threat to take the rebels' campaign of violence to cities across Turkey if the army did not halt its policy of confrontation.

By morning, the troops had advanced 10 kilometres into Iraqi territory in the Qandil mountains where the rebels maintain a network of rear bases in their 26-year-old armed campaign for self-rule in southeastern Turkey, the Iraqi Kurdish security official said.

Turkish fire killed a 15-year-old girl and wounded her mother and two-year-old brother in Khwakurq village, Sidikan district commissioner Ahmed Qader told AFP.

As Turkish forces crossed the border and advanced into Iraqi territory during the night they killed another three people, a security official said, without specifying whether the dead were civilians or PKK fighters.

Inside Turkey, the rebels kept up their attacks during the night, killing one soldier and wounding another, bringing the military's losses over the past two days to 12, Turkey's Anatolia news agency reported.

Clashes broke out between troops and PKK fighters after the rebels attacked a barracks near the eastern town of Palu, Anatolia said.

Indian police arrest Maoist leader over fatal train crash
Indian police on Sunday arrested a Maoist rebel leader accused for derailing a passenger train and causing a crash that killed 151 people in the eastern state of West Bengal last month.
I believe that's the one that the Naxalites apologized for. They'd got bad information -- they'd meant to get a goods train.
The Indians should apologize to Mahato right after they hang him ...
Investigators probing the train crash said Bapi Mahato was detained at a guesthouse in the neighbouring state of Jharkhand.

"We are looking for two more suspects in connection with the incident," senior police inspector Surojit Kar Purokayastha told AFP in Kolkata.

The exact cause of the crash remains uncertain but police have blamed the Maoist saboteurs for derailing the high-speed passenger train that collided with an oncoming goods train.

The rebels say they are fighting for the rights of landless tribal groups and farmers left behind by India's rapid economic expansion. A government offensive was launched last year to tackle the insurgency, but since then the Maoists have launched a series of bold counter-attacks.

Iraq
Eight decomposing bodies found in Baghdad brothel
The decomposing bodies of six women and two men were found in a suspected brothel in eastern Baghdad, Iraqi police sources said on Sunday. The corpses were found in Zayouna district, a mixed Sunni-Shi'ite neighbourhood of eastern Baghdad, on Saturday.

The bodies of six naked women were found in one room, and two men in another, the source said, adding that police were alerted by neighbours who had complained about the smell coming from the building.

The cause of death was not immediately clear due to the advance stages of decomposition, the sources said.

Islamist militias filled the vacuum created by Iraq's security chaos in the years following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, imposing their own interpretation of Islamic law in Baghdad, a city known at times under the secular rule of Saddam Hussein for its nightlife and liberal culture. Such killings have become less frequent as overall security improves and the role of militias, many linked to political parties, has decreased.

Grenade tossed into mosque injures three in southern Thailand
A woman and two boys were injured when a terrorist suspected insurgent threw a grenade into a mosque in Sai Buri district.

Aranya Tokayor, 43, Romsu Aming,9, and Amran Kwaeng, 9, were wounded by the explosion as they gathered for morning salah, daily Islamic prayer, at the Nuru Lamuttakin Tabing mosque. The three are being treated at Sai Buri Crown Prince hospital.

Investigators said one of two men riding on a motorcycle past the mosque threw a grenade at villagers gathered for prayers. Police who inspected shrapnel at the spot have not identified the grenade type.

In Muang district of Yala, about 500 residents of the Nakhon Yala Municipality yesterday joined religious services to bolster the spirits of people in the area which has been plagued with insurgent attacks.

The event, presided over by Yala governor Krissada Boonraj, combined Buddhist, Islamic and Chinese religious activities aimed at praying for peace and victims killed in the attacks. Thirty-nine monks were invited to a Buddhist merit-making ceremony in the morning. Twenty-one Islamic leaders then performed prayers. Traditional Chinese kong-tek and Teh Krajad (emptying basket) ceremonies were held in the afternoon to make merit for the dead.

Mr Krissada said the grand ceremony was held in the wake of two bomb attacks on the municipality's Ruamit Road on May 26, which killed two and injured 52 people.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran hangs top Sunni rebel Rigi: Report
[Al Arabiya Latest] Abdolmalek Rigi, head of the Sunni rebel group Jundollah who waged a deadly insurgency in Iran's southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, was hanged early Sunday, state news agency IRNA reported.

"After the decision of the Tehran revolutionary tribunal, Abdolmalek Rigi was hanged on Sunday morning in Evin prison," IRNA said.

It quoted a court statement as saying: "The head of the armed counter-revolutionary group in the east of the country ... was responsible for armed robbery, assassination attempts, armed attacks on the army and police and on ordinary people, and murder."

Rigi was captured in February while on a flight from Dubai to Kyrgystan. His hanging on Sunday comes less than a month after his brother Abdolhamid was hanged on charges of "terrorism".

A Tehran Revolutionary court sentenced Rigi to death and the Supreme Court upheld the sentence, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said.

Rigi led the shadowy Sunni militant group called Jundollah (Soldiers of God) that had waged a deadly insurgency in southeastern Iran killing civilians as well as military officials.

Iran says the group was backed by the United States.

IRNA, quoting the court statement, said Rigi's group was "responsible for the killing of 154 members of security forces and other innocent people and wounding of 320 people since 2003."

It said Jundollah was "linked to members of foreign intelligence services, including members from U.S. and Zionist regime's intelligence services under the cover of NATO."

It was also linked to intelligence services of some Arab countries and counter-revolutionary group People's Mujahedeen, the statement said.

Rigi himself was charged with forming the "terrorist group Jundollah which was fighting the Islamic republic."

"He collaborated and ordered 15 armed abductions, confessed to three murders, and ordered the murders of tens of citizens, police and military personnel through bombings and armed actions," the statement added.

IRNA said he had been sentenced to be hanged in front of the relatives of some of the victims of his attacks, but the report did not specify whether he was actually executed in their presence.

A new leader
Rigi's arrest was reportedly a spectacular operation, with Iranian warplanes forcing the flight carrying the militant from Dubai to Kyrgyzstan to land in Iran.

Soon after his arrest, the Jundollah group claimed it had appointed a new leader Muhammad Dhahir Baluch, the SITE monitoring agency reported.

According to SITE Jundollah said in its website posting: "Let the (Iranian) regime know that it will face a movement that is stronger and much more solid than ever before and one whose existence it has not been aware of.

"It will see what our believing heroes among our Baluch children can do to the occupiers, the aggressors and the unjust. The falsehood of the senior leaders of the regime will soon be exposed."

Jundollah says it is fighting Tehran's Shiite rule to secure rights for Sunni Baluchis who form a significant population in Sistan-Baluchestan.

A few days after Rigi's arrest Iranian state media alleged that the United States had offered to provide the militant aid to battle the Islamic regime.

"They (Americans) said they would cooperate with us and will give me military equipment," Rigi said in a taped statement broadcast on Iran's state-run English-language Press TV.

Tehran has long accused the group of being trained and equipped by American and British intelligence services as well as the Pakistanis in a bid to destabilize the government. Washington denies the charges.

Rigi's brother Abdolhamid was hanged in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan, on May 24 in front of the families of the victims, state media had reported.

Abdolhamid was convicted of "Moharebeh" (armed opposition to the state) and being "corrupt on earth by membership in a terrorist group."

Iran's southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan is an impoverished area near Pakistan and Afghanistan. Bombings and clashes between security forces, ethnic Baluch Sunni insurgents and drug traffickers have increased in recent years in the area.
