#2  The Red, White, and Blue waves before us,
The flag of the brave and the free,
Its stars and its stripes, forever glorious,
Gleam bright on the land and the sea.
Oh! look where the sunlight is falling,
And gilding the colors anew,
The stars and the stripes, they are calling,
Three cheers for the Red, White, and Blue!

In lands far away when we're roving,
And flag of our country we see,
Our hearts, filled with pride, begin a-glowing,
As we cheer the flag of the free.
Oh! look where the sunlight is falling,
And gilding the colors anew,
The stars and the stripes, they are calling,
Three cheers for the Red,
Three cheers for the Red,
Three cheers for the Red, White, and Blue!

#6  Interesting video, Ship. Kinda downhill after Churchill, wasn't it?

"The Royal Navy, thanks for taking care of us when we needed it and fucking up when it was absolutely required for us to survive."

I am so stealing that! :-D

#8  Thank you for that, Shipman. It was truly inspirational. Of course, even if we did have to kick their asses, we wouldn't even exist if not for the English. But my mother still hates the Beatles. I myself think of the Rolling Stones as a kind of contagious mental illness.

#9  Relevant for today, the 2nd & 3rd verses:

O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On thee our hopes we fix:
God save the Queen.

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

#10  And from our own version:

Our fathers' God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom's holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.

#11  My favorite stanza:

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation,

Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n - rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, for our cause is just, And this be our motto--"In God is our trust."

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Jalisco: Two State Police Agents Found Murdered -- UPDATED
Google Translate

Updated with additional information

Road workers in the Mexican state of Jalisco discovered the mutilated bodies of two police agents with the Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado (PGJE) Saturday, say Mexican news reports.

Raquel Guzman Frauste and Armando Vallarta Gutiérrez were found dead inside of six plastic bags alongside the Guadalajara-Zapotlanejo highway near calle Arroyo Hondo in the Santa Paula district of Guadalajara by Jalisco state Secretaría de Vialidad y Transporte workers.

The agents has been beheaded.

One of the bags had a message written on a paper card attached from a Los Valencia cartel group calling itself the Resistance.

Investigators now say the two agents were abducted Thursday night or early Friday morning in the Jardines del Country district in Guadalajara. The two officers are thought to part of a pursuit of armed suspects in Zapopan Tuesday around 1400 hrs, where two investigating officers were assaulted in Las Aguilas. The pursuit ended when one armed suspect was killed and another was wounded.

Jalisco has recently been the scene of intense gun battles between Los Zetas, and Valencia and Sinaloa criminal gangs for control of smuggling routes of contraband such as illegal drugs and illegal immigrants to the United States.

Europe
Terror charge over attack on cartoonist Kurt Westergaard
DENMARK'S top prosecutor has charged a Somali man with terrorism for allegedly trying to kill a cartoonist who caricatured the Prophet Mohammed.

Joergen Steen Soerensen said the man, who cannot be named under a court order, wanted to "seriously frighten the population" and destabilise Denmark in the January attack on Kurt Westergaard.

The 28-year-old allegedly forced himself into Westergaard's home - armed with a knife and an axe - trying to break into the panic room where the Danish cartoonist was hiding.

Police, who had been alerted to the scene, shot the attacker in the hand and leg as he tried to escape. Westergaard, age 74, was not hurt in the attack.

The suspect, who has been in custody since the attack, claimed he only wanted to frighten Westergaard and has denied all charges except of possessing weapons.

Mr Soerensen said the suspect was also charged with attempted murder of a police officer. If found guilty, he faces a life sentence, which in Denmark is generally reduced to 16 years in prison.

Westergaard said the attacker became a terrorist "the very moment he tried to killed me".

"I am an old and peaceful man and I am not vindictive but, of course, I believe he should be punished in line with the terror laws," Westergaard told AP.

The Danish intelligence agency says the suspect has links with the Somali militant group al-Shabab and al-Qaeda leaders in eastern Africa. A spokesman in Somalia for al-Shabab has denied the man is a member of the group.

Westergaard has faced several death threats over his depiction of Muhammad wearing a bomb-shaped turban.

The drawing was considered the most offensive of 12 Danish cartoons of the prophet that sparked an uproar in Muslim countries in 2006. He has lived under police protection since February 2008.

Westergaard retired last month, citing his age. He had been working at Jyllands-Posten newspaper for 27 years. He said he was enjoying life as a retiree but doubts that the cartoon "ever will stop haunting me".

In October, terrorism charges were brought against two Chicago men who allegedly planned to kill Westergaard and Jyllands-Posten's former cultural editor. That trial has not yet begun.

Last week, Indonesian police arrested three men suspected of plotting to attack the Danish Embassy in Jakarta.

Southeast Asia
Nine killed in two days of attacks in Thai south
Nine people, including six military personnel, have been killed in two days of bomb and gun attacks in Thailand's insurgency-plagued southern provinces, police said Friday.

A roadside bomb late Thursday killed three military rangers on patrol in Ruso district in Narathiwat, one of three troubled Muslim-majority provinces near the Malaysian border.

A security volunteer and a deputy village headman travelling with them also died in the attack by terrorists suspected Islamist separatists, police said. The bomb, containing about 20 kilos (45 pounds) of explosives, was buried in a dirt road and detonated by wire. The attackers then opened fire on the vehicle and seized weapons before fleeing the scene.

In a separate incident, three soldiers were killed when a bomb blast ripped through their patrol vehicle Friday in neighbouring Yala province, police said. A 46-year-old Muslim village leader also died on the way to hospital after she was shot Friday in a drive-by shooting in Mayo district in Pattani province, police said. They said her son, a security volunteer, had been shot dead two months ago.

2 arrested over bomb attack
[Straits Times] CAMBODIA on Saturday arrested two Thais thought to be linked to the anti-government 'Red Shirt' movement over a bomb attack in Bangkok last month.

The suspects, a man and a woman, were arrested in Cambodia's north-western Siem Reap province, according to a statement from the Cambodian foreign ministry.

It said the pair 'committed terrorist acts' by carrying out an attack in the Thai capital on June 22. 'Although there is no request from the Thai government, the Cambodian government has decided to arrest and send the two terrorists back to Thailand,' the statement said, noting that Cambodia adheres to an 'anti-terrorism policy'.

Local media reported that the pair were being held in connection with an attempted bombing at the headquarters of the Bhumjaithai party, part of the Thai government coalition.

The attack followed recent street protests by anti-government Red Shirts in Bangkok that sparked outbreaks of violence in which 90 people died and nearly 1,900 were injured. The Cambodian foreign ministry said the pair, both aged 33, would be handed over to the Thai embassy on Monday.

Cambodia's decision to apprehend the suspects could be seen as an attempt at thawing ties with its neighbour, with which it has a history of rocky relations.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran deploys sophisticated radar to Syria
[Al Arabiya Latest] Iran has moved radar to Syria that could provide early-warning against a possible surprise Israeli air attack against Tehran's nuclear sites, a U.S. defense official said on Friday.

The radar transfer was first reported in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday and prompted the State Department to voice concerns about cooperation between Syria and Iran.

The sophisticated radar was deployed in Syria last year, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP

The move could bolster Iran's position amid long-running speculation that Israel might stage a bombing raid against Tehran's nuclear enrichment facilities.

Information from new radar also could potentially help the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah with its missile arsenal and air defenses.

Israel and the United States have refused to rule out military action against Iran over its nuclear program, which Washington says is designed to secure atomic weapons.

Iran has insisted its enrichment effort is purely peaceful and aimed at generating electricity.

State Department spokesman Philip Crowley on Thursday said Washington had concerns about the relationship between Iran and Syria.

"We don't believe that Iran's designs for the region are in Syria's best interest," Crowley told reporters.

While acknowledging that all countries "have the right to protect themselves," the spokesman said the reported radar delivery would be of concern due to Syria's relationship with Hezbollah.

President Barack Obama warned Iran Thursday it faced mounting isolation, signing tough new US sanctions he said would strike at Tehran's capacity to finance its nuclear program.

The measures, on top of new U.N. Security Council and European sanctions, aim to choke off Iran's access to imports of refined petroleum products like gasoline and jet fuel and curb its access to the international banking system.

#4  I'm guessing it's this: HQ2, a Chinese upgraded SA-2.
China Quietly Defends Iran
While Iran has been unable to get modern Russian S300 surface-to-air missiles (yet), they have gone ahead and built a nationwide air defense network using Chinese HQ2 missiles. These were first purchased in the 1980s, but since then, Iran progressed to the point where they are now building HQ2 missiles and radar stations under license. It's believed that China has quietly allowed Iran to build the latest versions of the HQ2 as well. These are not quite as effective as the S300, but are pretty formidable.
