Afghanistan
Army chaplain KIA in Afghanistan
DENVER (AP) - A chaplain killed in Afghanistan this week was the first Army clergyman killed in action since the Vietnam War, the military said Thursday.

Capt. Dale Goetz of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo., was among five soldiers killed by an improvised bomb on Monday.

Before Goetz, the last Army chaplain to die in action was Phillip Nichols, who was killed by a concealed enemy explosive in Vietnam in October of 1970, said Chaplain Carleton Birch, a spokesman for the Army chief of chaplains.

Officials said Goetz had hitched a ride on a resupply convoy when he was killed.

Birch said chaplains are considered noncombatants and don't carry weapons, but they are accompanied by a chaplain's assistant, a soldier who is armed. A chaplain's assistant, Staff Sgt. Christopher Stout of Worthville, Ky., was killed in Afghanistan in July, Birch said.

Chaplains don't go on combat patrols but do go onto battlefields to conduct services and counsel soldiers, Birch said. "Many of those places where they travel are very dangerous," he said.

Learn something new every day: my high school American History teacher had been a chaplain's assistant in Viet Nam. I never bothered to learn what that entailed - now I know.

#6  I got to Vietnam the day after that Chaplain was killed. Lots of folks were talking about it. This is the first time I've seen it mentioned since then. Lots of good guys, chaplains. I knew two that had received Purple Hearts - one in Vietnam and one in Korea.

#7  In VietNam, there were three chaplains who won the Medal of Honor. All three were Catholic priets. Two of them were KIA - Vincent Capodanno and Charles Watters.
One, Angelo Liteky was a Catholic priest at the time. He later left the priesthood and married a nun. He is also the only MOH recipient who returned the medal.

Darfur: American freed, Russians kidnapped
[Iran Press] Sudanese government secures the release of a female American aid worker abducted in Darfur 105 days ago, just a day after three Russians were kidnapped.

Flavia Wagner, 35, who worked for US charity Samaritan's Purse in Darfur, was kidnapped on May 18 in the village of Abu Ajura, in South Darfur state, along with two Sudanese colleagues who were freed after a week.

She was handed over to South Darfur authorities on Monday without any ransom being paid. Her kidnappers had originally demanded a ransom. She arrived the same day in Khartoum.

Somalia showing signs of progress: UN official
[Pak Daily Times] The twin-pronged political and peacekeeping approach to ending almost two decades of civil war in Somalia is beginning to pay dividends, a senior United Nations official said on Thursday.

Lynn Pascoe, the UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs, said there was growing regional and international support for Somalia's fragile government and he welcomed the recent strengthening of the African Union peacekeeping force.

He acknowledged many problems remained, including how the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) could deliver services to a nation heavily dependent on outside aid and the strengthening of al Qaeda-linked Somali rebels. "Is this a huge challenge, yes. But what strikes me is how the pieces are coming into place and the political will of the international community is strengthening," Pascoe told reporters in the Kenyan capital a day after visiting Mogadishu. "We're beginning to make some progress, but I am not saying there is a wonderful solution at hand."

#1  Throw this one in the bin where it belongs.

The UN has failed completely in supporting the national Transitional Federal Government (TFG). It controlled 2 blocks of Mogadishu as of last week, and probably now controls nothing. Al Shabaab are now running the show.

If the UN had a thimble-full of brains between its hundreds of overpaid bureaucrats and fat-bottomed delegates, it would have recognised the functional administrations of Somaliland and Puntland and given them the money they have instead wasted by throwing at the TFG.

The al-Shabaab are now moving north having consolidated in south Central and will progress to blowing up tourists in Kenya, Uganda and potentially further afield.

Africa North
AQIM claims responsibility for failed bomb attack in Mauritania
(Xinhua) -- The North African wing of Al Qaeda (AQIM) has claimed responsibility for the failed suicide bomb attack at Nema, some 1,200 km east of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania.
Another failure for another Al Qaeda branch. They've been using an awful lot of barrel scrapings as martyrs for the cause... Perhaps they should stick to the usual activities of criminal gangs, where they're more successful: kidnapping, murder, protection rackets, multi-continent drug dealing.
The failed attack came on Aug. 25, when the Mauritanian army shot to death a suicide bomber attempting to force through the gates of an army barracks with a 4x4 vehicle full of explosives.

In a statement on an Arabic website, the terrorist organization said this failed attack was meant to be a revenge against the July 22 Franco-Mauritanian raid on an AQIM camp. Seven AQIM members lost their lives during the assault, which was reportedly launched to release a 78-year-old French hostage.

Plague Doc questioned over Miami Airport scare
A world-famous Texas scientist, who was once charged for smuggling plague bacteria into the U.S., is being questioned by authorities after a suspicious metal canister was found in his luggage at Miami International Airport on Thursday, NBC Miami reported.

The discovery in Dr. Thomas Butler's bag triggered a bomb scare, which shut down airport activity overnight. Airport screeners thought the canister resembled a pipe bomb. Security officials said. While no trace of explosives was found, the canister was still sent to an FBI lab for additional tests.
He told local police the canister was used for medical testing, and the FBI confirmed it was used to transport dead bacteria samples. My question is, what was in the canister when he went to Saudi?
Butler, 70, made headlines when he was arrested in 2003 after the scientist reported 30 vials of plague were missing from his lab at Texas Tech University, according to NBC. He was accused of illegally transporting plague samples, theft, embezzlement and fraud. He was found guilty of exporting the vials, lying to federal agents and stealing research funds. He served approximately two years in jail. Later Butler was acquitted of illegally exporting the plague vials. His story later aired on CBS' 60 Minutes and was called "The Case Against Thomas Butler."

FBI Agent Michael Leverock said the suspect, who he did not identify, was being cooperative during a press conference Friday morning. "We don't even know if a crime took place," Leverock said. Sources told NBC that Butler was coming from Saudi Arabia and going home to Texas.
He's apparently a professor at Ross University in the Caribbean on a teaching assignment in Saudi Arabia and has beeen released without charge.
After seven hours, the airport reopened Friday morning. The incident resulted in four of the airport's six terminals being evacuated.

Pak Taliban threatens to hit US, Europe
Looks like more OT for the Drone Boys...
Pakistan's Taliban on Friday threatened to launch attacks in the United States and Europe "very soon" and dismissed a move by Washington to add the group to its terrorism blacklist.

"The U.S. listing of TTP as a terrorist organisation is a sign of them bring scared. It shows the U.S. and its allies are scared of us," Qari Hussain Mehsud, a senior TTP leader, told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location.

#2  It's well past time for an ARCLIGHT strike down through the NWFP, from Quetta to the Hindu Kush, using iron bombs, napalm, cluster weapons, and whatever other non-nuclear material we have available. No individual strikes, but a continuous KABOOM for 36-48 hours. After it's all over, we can ask the remaining talibunnies if they want some more - IF we can find them, and they can hear us.

Drone Squad takes out 6 8 in North Wazoo
MIRANSHAH, Pakistan -- A US drone strike on Friday killed at least six militants in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt near the Afghan border, local security officials said. The strike hit a militant compound in outskirts of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan district, a renowned hub for Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants.

Two intelligence officials in Miranshah also confirmed the attack and the toll, saying all those killed were local militants. The area is famous as stronghold of the Al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, which has staged attacks on US and NATO troops fighting in Afghanistan.

One intelligence official said the house was completely destroyed. "All those killed were local militants, we have no report about the presence of any 'high-value' target," the intelligence official said.
Busy day for the boys today...
DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan -- Pakistani officials say the second suspected U.S. missile strike of the day has killed two people in the country's restive tribal region.
They said they believe both men slain in the vehicle in the village of Datta Khel in North Waziristan were foreign militants.

LeJ boom Shias in Quetta
ISLAMABAD: In yet another sectarian assault, a suicide bomber targeted a rally of Shia Muslim minority in Pakistan's volatile south-western city of Quetta, killing 49 people and injured dozens of others.
Religion of Peace...
The blast took place at about 3:00 pm when an estimated 2000 people gathered in Quetta's Meezan Chowk to mark solidarity with the Palestinian people on Al-Quds Day. The rally was organized by the Shia Imamia Students Organization. Every year, on the last Friday of the month of Ramadan, rallies take place across Pakistan, to support the Palestinian demand for a homeland. After the blast, the mourners turned violent and armed people resorted to gun sex aerial firing which continued for some two hours.
The paleo 'cause' is a surprisingly big deal in Pakistan... almost like they are looking for something to divert themselves from their real problems- such as: THEMSELVES.
According to media reports, Punjab-based terrorist group, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi which claimed responsibility of the Lahore attack also accepted that they carried out the Quetta blast.

(Lahore) Thirty-three people were killed and over 150 others injured in three back-to-back explosions, occurring in Lahore when processions of Yaum-e-Ali were on their way to conclude at the Karbala Gamay Shah in the city on Wednesday.

The first blast of a cracker occurred in front of the gate of Lower Mall police station, opposite Karbala Gamay Shah building, at 6:55 pm. It caused panic among the mourners, who started running towards the Bhatti Gate. Meanwhile, the second blast took place in Ghaznavi Street, Urdu Bazaar's parking area, at around 7 pm when a suicide bomber blew himself up while he was being frisked by a constable. Two persons, along with the constable, lost their lives in the blast. Other policemen standing there fled the spot.

The furious mob took the amputated legs of the suicide bomber, who had blown himself up at the Bhatti Gate, to the front gate of the Government College University and vented their anger by hitting them with shoes, sticks and bricks.
The third blast occurred at the Bhatti Chowk when another suicide bomber blew himself up about 13 minutes after the second blast. As a result, dozens of people received injuries.

Israelis & Palestinians launch direct peace talks
[Al Arabiya] Israeli and Palestinian leaders began their first round of direct peace negotiations in more than a year on Thursday, pledging to meet again in two weeks as part of a U.S.-brokered quest for peace.

U.S. Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held productive meetings and would meet again in the region on Sept. 14-15 and every two weeks thereafter.

The direct peace negotiations came despite widespread skepticism and fresh violence in the volatile West Bank that underscored the challenges facing both leaders as they seek an agreement within a year to establish an independent Palestinian state that will exist peacefully side-by-side with Israel.

How about extending Israeli sovereignty from the Med to the Jordan River to the east, to the Litani River to the north, and to the Suez to the west? Works for me. And this time, DON'T give it back or let Arabs live there - including Bedouins.

Lot harder to hit Tel Aviv from Beirut, especially if everything between the Litani and Beirut is radioactive. Herd the "Palestinians" into Jordan, the Red Sea, Egypt, the Med, or anywhere else except Israeli territory.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
'Hezbollah arms depot' go boom
Beruit, 3 Sept. (AKI) - A suspected Hezbollah arms depot in southern Lebanon caught fire on Friday setting off a series of explosions and injuring five people, according to the NowLebanon website.
Spies, guys. Start looking for spies. They're everywhere! They could be anybody!
The three-floor building in the southern Lebanese coastal city of Chehabiyya - about 80 kilometres south of Beirut - was being used as a Hezbollah arms depot, NowLebanon reported, citing unnamed sources.

Lebanese soldiers arrived to cordon off the area and prevent access to media, according to the report.

Chehabiyya is part of a volatile border zone south of the Litani River in which Hezbollah has been banned from having weapons under a U.N. resolution that ended the 2006 war between the militant group and Israel.

#1  More...

It was not clear what caused Friday's blasts, but one official said it might have been triggered by an electrical short circuit setting off secret Hezbollah munitions.

An electrical short curcuit, Avi?
Sure. Why not...

UN Resolution 1701 prohibits Hezbollah from engaging in military activities in south Lebanon and forbids weapon smuggling to the group.

Yes. Of course it does...

Mehdi Karroubi says his home attacked
[Pak Daily Times] Hardline 'thugs' surrounded the home of opposition Iranian leader Mehdi Karroubi, pelting the building with rocks to prevent the cleric from attending a rally on Friday, his website said. In the latest such incident, members of the Islamist Basij militia 'violently attacked' the building where the opposition cleric lives, the sahamnews.org website said.

The militia, "in a coordinated and pre-planned action, gathered in front of the building which houses Mehdi Karroubi," the website said. "The Basij thugs... with the support of police... disrupted public order and peace. They threw stones, sprayed the building with paint and stole security cameras of the building" in northern Tehran, the report said.

It said the Basij had been gathering outside the building every night since Sunday, and that the harassment was meant to prevent the opposition leader from attending annual nationwide rallies marking Quds Day, or Jerusalem Day. They were "intimidating and terrorising public opinion, especially to prevent Karroubi from participating in the Quds Day rally," Sahamnews said.
