Afghanistan
Afghans stage anti-US demonstration
[Iran Press TV] Hundreds of Afghans have taken to the streets to voice their anger over a US-led attack that killed dozens in the volatile eastern parts of country.

The deadly US-led attack, which took place on Friday, prompted hundreds of people to stage an anti-US demonstration in Afghanistan's eastern Laghman Province on Saturday.

Several protesters have reportedly been injured after police fired warning shots to disperse the crowd.

The protest comes as, according to local sources, 30 civilians including women and children lost their lives in the US-led military operation in the province.

NATO officials, however, said gunnies were the target of the attack.

The protesters argue that Afghan civilians mainly fall victim to such US-led military operations.

Hundreds of civilians have lost their lives in US-led airstrikes and ground operations in different parts of the war-ravaged country over the past months.

The loss of civilian lives at the hand of foreign forces has led to a dramatic increase of anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan.

#2  A good point, tu3031. One must ask how many of the protesters are being paid -- in Pakistan and some other Muslim countries this is actually a lucrative career choice, much like the homeless getting paid to carry protest signs in the U.S.

Africa North
France says Sahara hostages are still alive
[Al Arabiya] There is "every reason" to believe that five French hostages being held in the Sahara by al-Qaeda are alive, French Defense Minister Herve Morin said on Saturday.

Five French, a Togolese and a Madagascan were kidnapped on September 16 from their homes in Arlit, a uranium mining town in the north of Niger, and taken to a remote location in Mali.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the local wing of Osama bin Laden's global jihadist network, claimed the kidnapping and has warned Paris not to launch a military intervention.

"We have every reason to think that they are alive," Morin told Europe 1 radio, although he acknowledged that there was "no proof of life, as such."

"The claim of responsibility by al-Qaeda indicating that in a few days we are going to have some precise demands, it is all this that leads us to think that, in effect, our compatriots are alive," he said.

On the anticipated demands, he said, "that is what we are waiting for."

Paris has deployed an 80-strong military intelligence unit and spotter planes to the Sahara to try to track the gang down, but officials have thus far played down the likelihood of a military rescue mission.

The head of France's armed forces said on Friday, that immediate military action to secure the release of the hostages has been ruled out.

Speaking on Europe 1 radio, Edouard Guillaud said military intervention was possible if the situation escalated, but Paris had no reason to think the lives of the hostages were immediately in danger.

"The military option is possible, but at this moment in time the hostages' lives are not under direct threat and we are waiting for a line of communication," Guillaud said.

In July French and Mauritanian commandos launched an assault on an al-Qaeda base in northern Mali, killing seven bully boyz but failing to find a previous French hostage, 78-year-old Michel Germaneau, who was later reported killed by AQIM.

French forces are mapping what is described as an area of rocky desert and sand mountains six times the size of France, with camps that could belong to Tuaregs, caravans, smugglers or Al-Qaeda.

Despite repeated denials, France has earned a reputation over the years for paying off kidnappers -- with cash and by prisoner exchanges -- to protect its economic interests and the lives of its citizens.

After Germaneau's death, however, Sarkozy signaled a new tougher stance.

"It can't be our only strategy to pay ransoms and to agree to free prisoners in exchange for unlucky innocent victims. That can't be a strategy," he complained, after Madrid ransomed two Spanish hostages.

#1  "It can't be our only strategy to pay ransoms

It can't be your strategy at all. But this is a start. When the rest of the world figures that out, hostage-taking will drop to a trickle.

Arabia
Yemen regains town as Qaeda attacks a bus
[Al Arabiya] Yemen has regained control of a besieged southern town from al-Qaeda gunnies, authorities said on Saturday before forces of Evil sprayed a bus in Sanaa with bullets, wounding 10 intelligence agents.

"Security forces backed by army units succeeded at dawn on Friday to clear out the city of Hawta where al-Qaeda terrorist elements were holed up" since September 18, an interior ministry front man said.

The forces were pursuing "terrorist elements who decamped to the mountains surrounding the city," added the front man, whose statement was carried by the official Saba news agency.

But the military's reported advances in the south were followed by a setback in the capital Sanaa at dawn on Saturday, when two gunnies ambushed a bus carrying intelligence agents to work.

The unidentified attackers fired automatic weapons at the bus before fleeing, the security services said, adding they were probably forces of Evil of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.

The agents were taken to hospital, and two of them were at death's door, according to a medical official.

On Wednesday, Yemeni troops said they were preparing to go on the offensive against forces of Evil entrenched in the Shabwa provincial town and its surrounding mountains, sparking a mass exodus of civilians.

Of the town's 20,000 residents, between 8,000 and 12,000 had decamped by Tuesday, the Yemeni Red Islamic Thingy reported at the time. The U.N. refugee agency put the number at 4,000 on Friday.

But the al-Qaeda gunnies had been blocking further departures with a view to using residents as human shields, a Yemeni security official said at the time.

In a statement on Wednesday, rights group Amnesty International quoted residents from areas near Hawta as saying the forces of Evil in the town were not al-Qaeda members.

Hawta is one of two Yemeni towns to have been attacked by suspected al-Qaeda forces of Evil in the past month.

In late August, government forces and alleged al-Qaeda forces of Evil fought a pitched battle in the town of Loder in the neighboring southern province of Abyan. At least 33 people were killed, including 19 bad turbans.

Thousands flee fighting in Yemen
[Iran Press TV] Fresh fighting between Yemeni government forces and suspected al-Qaeda-linked beturbanned goons in the southern Shabwa province has forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported on Friday that the violence had forced at least 4,000 Yemenis to flee their homes in al-Hawtah and surrounding villages.

"Reports indicate that displacement continues to grow," the UNHCR's spokesperson, Andrej Mahecic, told news hounds on Friday.

Yemeni security forces carried out sweep operations and chased with suspected al-Qaeda beturbanned goons in Shabwa province on Friday.

"Security forces backed by the army managed to clear the town of al-Houta of al-Qaeda elements. They are currently hunting down the terrorists, who decamped to mountainous areas surrounding the city," the state-run 26.sep website quoted Shabwa Security Director Brigadier General Ahmed al-Maqdashi as saying on Friday.

#1  An alert neighbor outside shot the burglar

Aren't guns pretty much illegal in Mexico (like in Chicago and Washington District of Crime?) This neighbor could be in a lot of trouble.

#2  The Mexican Government maintains a list of weapons the average citizen is not allowed to have, mostly anything the military and state police and higher use.

As it is, the Mexican Constitution allows a head of household to keep a gun in his home for personal defense purposes.

A grandma in Juarez last month emptied a revolver into a pair of criminals who attempted to abduct her husband, killing one and wounding the other.

No charges were filed against her.

#3  Funny how the Mexican press can give you the make and model of vehicles, but can't seem to find people's names.

#4  There are six daily newspapers in Juarez that I know of, and nearly every one of them redact the names of the victims as a means of enhancing newsstand sales. Occasionally the names will get published, and sometimes I will redact the names myself if it is partial, or if the name doesn't appear to be fully confirmed in the translation.

Newspapers in other areas of northern Mexico do not redact to the extent Juarez papers do, prolly because of the intense competition for newsstand sales.

#6  Welcome to Rantburg, juandos! badanov does a "More Mexican Mayhem" round-up almost every day, plus there are occasional information-laden perspective pieces on our op-ed page by Chris Covert. Check Rantburg's archives for the past few months. Fred Pruitt in conference with the Rantburg moderators concluded that the situation in Mexico is a serious consideration for those following the War on Terror, given the strong working relationships between the drug gangs and Hamas, Hizb'allah, Iran's Revolutionary Guard, and Al Qaeda.... not to mention that there is strong evidence of Revolutionary Guard and other terrorists having been smuggled across the U.S. for years by Mexican coyotes (discarded uniforms, Arabic and Farsi speakers captured by our border guards, that kind of thing).

#9  Mexicans tell me they can legally own a single shot shotgun or a .22 rifle. No handguns, no high power rifles.

I think you'd have to be committing a crime with a gun to run afoul of the Mexican authorities. They seem much less proactive than our wonderful federal authorities like the ATF. In fact, you have to be doing something pretty over the top to get their attention most of the time. In my experience. There are exceptions, I'm sure.

#11  When I was looking at rifles, I read that the Ruger Mini-14 is stamped ".223" on its receiver because of the Mexican ban on weapons that can take a "military cartridge". Technically, the Mini-14 can take a 5.56x45mm military round, which is physically identical but has a more powerful charge, but if they put that on the receiver... no more Mexican market!

But I doubt there are many drug lords putting Mini-14s in his armory, when he can buy AKs for a hair more than cost from Cuba, Venezuela, etc.

Tenth Mexican mayor gunned down
[Iran Press TV] Armed assassins have killed Mexican Mayor Prisciliano Rodriguez Salinas of the town Doctor Gonzalez near the city of Monterrey -- in what is the tenth such slaying incident this year.

Salinas, 53, was attacked by gunnies alongside his personal aide on Thursday night at his ranch home near the industrial center of Monterrey in the state of Nuevo Leon in northern Mexico, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The incident was the fourth such assassination of a mayor in Mexico within the past six weeks, and the tenth within the past year.

In a separate attack on Friday night, Ricardo Solis, who was to be sworn in as mayor of Gran Morelos in the northern state of Chihuahua in two weeks, was shot and critically injured.

Mexican drug cartels target officials who are involved in the counter-narcotics efforts to control drug markets and smuggling routes to the United States.

More than 28,000 people in Mexico have been killed in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched his 'war on drugs' campaign in late 2006.

President Calderon condemned the recent killing, saying, "The federal government reiterates its commitment to continuing to work for the safety of all citizens and to fighting criminal gangs relentlessly."

Pakistani plane diverted to Sweden after threat
[Al Arabiya] Police have detained and are questioning a man said to be carrying explosives on board a Pakistain International Airlines Boeing 777, which was diverted to Sweden while en route to Pakistain from Canada.
When you hear about somebody on a plane carrying explosives you're surprised if it's not a Pak.
The plane with 273 people onboard emergency landed in Stockholm following a bomb threat, the Stockholm-Arlanda airport said.

Stockholm district police front man Janne Hedlund said a woman had called Canadian police after the plane had taken off from Canada, saying a man on board had explosives with him.

"Our central control is in touch with the plane and Stockholm but as far as security checks are concerned they're saying they are not going to tell us until they complete the process"

Pakistain International Airlines front man Syed Sultan Hassan
Canadian police informed the pilot and, as the plane was in Swedish airspace, it was diverted to Arlanda airport, the main airport for the Swedish capital.

Hedlund said police were trying to establish contact with the man and explosives experts were on hand.

When the plane first landed, the passengers stayed on board, but police later decided to evacuate them.

The police were taking the threat seriously, but were still investigating whether the man had explosives.

He said they would be able to check whether he had explosives during the evacuation.

"The pilot only informed us that he's landing there due to security reasons. All passengers and crew members are well," Pakistain International Airlines front man Syed Sultan Hassan said.

"Our central control is in touch with the plane and Stockholm but as far as security checks are concerned they're saying they are not going to tell us until they complete the process," he said.

At the airport, the plane was standing with its engines idling at the end of a runway, about 2 km (1 mile) from the airport terminal building.

Several police cars were parked near the plane and a larger group of police vehicles plus fire engines were parked further away.

Hedlund said that the man had passed through all the security checks before getting on the plane.

An airport front man said the plane was flying from Toronto and he thought the destination was Karachi. Stockholm airport was otherwise operating normally, he said.
Update from the Vancouver Sun (summarized):
It appears to be a hoax -- the Canadian authorities are searching for the woman who twice called in the threat from a pay phone. No explosives were found, so the gentleman in question was released, although not until after the flight had continued on without him. Arrangements are being made to let him continue to Karachi.

Curfew brings life to halt in Kashmir
[Iran Press TV] The New Delhi government continues its strict curfew restrictions in Indian-administered Kashmir for a 14th consecutive day, bringing all activities to a standstill in the Himalayan valley.

Indian security forces put up barricades and fences in Srinagar to restrict public movement, bringing normal life to a halt in the region.

Local residents have demanded a relaxation of the curfew across the volatile region as the strict security measure has been in place in the region's summer capital of Srinagar and several other towns for weeks.

A Press TV correspondent said residents have been complaining of shortages of food and other supplies across the valley.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
the New Delhi government announced that it would hold talks with Kashmiris to end months of anti-India unrest in the region.

"A group of interlocutors will begin a process of sustained dialogue with all sections of the people of Jammu and Kashmir," Indian Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said on Saturday.

However,
The infamous However...
key separatist leaders in Kashmir have rejected talks with the New Delhi government.

The Indian-administered Kashmir has been rocked by frequent protest rallies since June. The demonstrations broke out after Indian security forces killed a teenager on June 11.

Some 110 Kashmiris, among them children, have lost their lives during three months of unrest. Thousands have been killed in volatile Indian-administered Kashmir since 1989.

The three-month long political turmoil has also had a devastating effect on the country's economy and education.

In reaction to the situation, Pak Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood (Wormtongue) Qureshi recently urged the international community and regional countries to pressure India over Kashmir.

Amnesty International has also called on India to take essential measures to protect and respect human rights in Kashmir.

"Security forces should use the minimum force necessary to defend themselves or others against an imminent threat of death or serious injury. They should not employ intentional lethal use of firearms except where such use is strictly unavoidable in order to protect life," the rights group said in a statement.

NATO truck driver shot dead in Kalat
[Pak Daily Times] A driver was rubbed out and three more containers, carrying logistic support for NATO forces in Afghanistan, were set ablaze in separate incidents on Saturday.

According to sources, unidentified gunnies ridding on a motorcycle opened fire on two containers on RCD Highway in Manguchar area of Kalat district. Resultantly, a driver identified as Nizammudin keeled over dead. The attackers set both the containers on fire and decamped from the scene. The Levies personnel reached the spot soon after the incident and took the dead body to nearby hospital for his appointment with Doctor Quincy.

Another oil tanker carrying fuel for NATO forces was set on fire in Khuzdar district, some 300-kilometer from Quetta. The assailants beat feet from the scene after destroying the oil tanker.

Three containers were completely destroyed in the attack. Six NATO containers had been torched during the past 24 hours. No group has grabbed credit for the attack. However,

Gunmen kill 2 people in attack on mosque
[Pak Daily Times] Three faceless myrmidons on Saturday opened fire at worshippers inside a mosque in Bahawalpur killing two people and injuring seven others, police said.

"Three men armed with pistols entered Al Qamar mosque and fired at worshippers and as a result of the firing two men died while seven others were maimed," Bahawalpur district police chief Babar Bakht said. "Two of the maimed were in critical condition," he added.

After the attack, people gathered in the streets to protest the incident and blocked roads. They shouted slogans against the district administration for its failure to maintain law and order.

Regional Police Officer Ahmad Raza Qadri and rescue teams reached the spot and dispersed the crowd, after ensuring them to arrest the perpetrators behind the attack at earliest.

Police officials said the incident was not a terrorist act but the real picture would emerge after investigation.

US drone strike kills four in Miranshah
[Pak Daily Times] A dronezap targeted a vehicle on Saturday in North Wazoo, killing four bad boyz, intelligence officials said. It had been the seventeenth such attack this month -- the most intense barrage since the air strikes began in 2004. Shortly before the attack, the vehicle left a terrorist hideout in Datta Khel, a town in the North Wazoo tribal area, controlled by bully boyz focused on attacking NATO troops in Afghanistan, the two intelligence officials said. It is not clear exactly why the attacks have spiked, but most of this month's strikes had targeted forces led by Jalaluddin Haqqani, a commander who was once supported by Pakistain and the US during the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Haqqani has since turned against the US, and American military officials have said his network -- now effectively led by his son, Sirajuddin -- presents one of the greatest threats to foreign forces in Afghanistan.

Danish embassy bombing suspects acquitted
[Pak Daily Times] A court on Saturday acquitted three men charged over a deadly suicide car boom attack near the Danish embassy in Islamabad in 2008, but prosecutors said they would appeal the verdict.

"The court observed that the prosecution failed to prove the charges and acquitted the three accused men," said Senior Prosecutor Muhammad Tayyab.

"We will file an appeal in the high court within the 30 days' stipulated period," Tayyab said.

Six people were killed and about 27 maimed when the devastating car bomb exploded outside the embassy in June 2008 amidst the usual temper tantrum in the Mohammedan world over the blasphemous cartoons, first printed in Danish newspapers in 2005.
So the kaboom was three years after the pictures...
"Yosiefullah, I feel the need to explode. Be a good lad and find me a juicy reason from the Excuses List. Something on page 17 will do nicely, I think."
The bomb damaged the mission and the residences of the Indian and Dutch ambassadors, and nearly destroyed a nearby UN agency.

Tayyab said that the prosecution had produced 32 witnesses in court, of whom two "eyewitnesses" testified that they saw suspects Qari Ilyas and Shamsul Haq signalling the suicide boomer towards the target as they sat in a car.

He did not speak about the role of the third accused. The three are the only suspects to have been tried over the attack.

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq: Security forces arrested the members of an 18-man cell that has links with Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) network, according to al-Saadiya district chief on Saturday.

State of Law MP survives attempt on life in Baghdad
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: A legislator from Dawlat al-Qanoon (State of Law) escaped an assassination attempt when a group of armed men attacked his motorcade on Friday evening in southeastern Baghdad, the third one since the March 7 elections in the war-torn country, his office said on Saturday.

“An armed group attempted to assassinate Shahmani after they opened fire on his motorcade while he was heading to his mother’s home in al-Amin neighborhood, southeastern Baghdad, on Friday evening,” a spokesman in his office told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Shahmani survived unscathed the third attempt on his life since the March 7 general elections,” he added.

Shahmani had defected from the Sadrist Movement of Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr to establish the National Iraq Grouping, which joined Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s State of Law bloc.

A security source in the Iraqi interior ministry had said a ministry’s internal affairs department force arrested on Friday a group of armed men in al-Amin neighborhood on charges of planning lawmaker Shahmani. His office, however, denied reports that the group was arrested.

Israeli tank fire kills Palestinian
[Iran Press TV] A Paleostinian man has died of his injuries sustained during an Israeli attack which took place near a village in the northern Gazoo Strip, a report says.

The military wing of the Islamic resistance movement of Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, al-Qassam brigades, reported the death of the victim named Mahmud al-Ahmarine on Saturday, according to AFP

Israeli tanks had opened fire on the 21-year-old and two of his fellow Gazooks near the village of Juhr al-Dik located in east of the Gazoo City earlier in the month.

Syrian Judiciary Prepares Arrest Warrants against those being Sued by Sayyed
[An Nahar] The Syrian judiciary is preparing arrest warrants against individuals former General Security chief Jamil al-Sayyed has filed lawsuits against, reported Ad Diyar on Saturday. It said that the judiciary is waiting for the appropriate time to send the warrant to its Lebanese counterpart.

If the Lebanese judiciary does not comply with the Syrian demand, then Syria will take the appropriate measures to have Interpol issue arrest warrants against those individuals.

The 14 individuals, who were mentioned during Sayyed's recent press conference, include former head of the U.N. commission investigating ex-Premier Rafik Hariri's assassination Detlev Mehlis and former minister Marwan Hamadeh.

Israeli drones buzz over south Lebanon
[Iran Press TV] Two Israeli reconnaissance aircraft have penetrated Lebanese airspace and have flown over parts of the country in flagrant violation of a UN Security Council resolution.

The Lebanese military issued a statement through the National News Agency, saying an Israeli reconnaissance drone crossed into Lebanese airspace on Friday at 11 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) and hovered over Tyre, located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Beirut. The aircraft left nearly two hours later, after it had conducted several unwarranted flights.

Another Israeli spy aircraft was observed patrolling the skies above the town of Alma al-Shaab in south Leb at 1:35 p.m. local time (1035 GMT). The aircraft left Lebanese airspace at 3:25 p.m. local time (1225 GMT) after flying over the village of al-Naqoura.

In 2009, Beirut complained to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society about Israeli aircraft violating the airspace over the south of the country.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which brokered a ceasefire in the war of aggression Israel launched against Leb in 2006, calls on Israel to respect Leb's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
