Afghanistan
NATO drone 'shot down' in Afghanistan
[Iran Press TV] Taliban Islamic fascisti say they have shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operated by NATO in the eastern Afghan province of Khost,
...which coincidentally borders North Wazoo and Kurram Agency...
near the border with Pakistain.

A recovery force was immediately sent to retrieve the UAV.

The Taliban claimed they targeted the remotely piloted aircraft in the mountainous areas of Khost on Thursday, Afghan Islamic Press reported.

However,
The infamous However...
the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the drone crashed due to a technical glitch.

Taliban Islamic fascisti claim to have shot down several NATO helicopters and drone aircrafts in different parts of Afghanistan over the past months.

#1  Could be they did shoot it down - the armed UAVs fly low and slow, for the most part, This seems awfully like the sort of empty swagger we're used to from them, tho.

#3  Depends on the model and the mission. If this was, say, one of the earlier Predators flying a NATO recon up close and personal rather than a Reaper hunter-killer on standoff recon, it might well have been flying much lower than 25,000 feet in the mountains around Khost.

LOL! I can just see some duck-hunter's face as his golden retriever brings him one of the Army's small Regimental-level UAVs...

I've never been much of a duck-hunter, but I do know you have to lead your target. A 10-gauge goose-gun with #6 shot reduces the need a bit, but it still works better to lead. You also want to let the birds get far enough away they don't hit the water as mush.

Suspected Somali pirates charged in Kenyan court
(Xinhua) -- Four Somali youths jugged by the French Navy over allegedly hijacking a Kenyan vessel and handed over to the Kenyan government have been charged in the coastal city of Mombasa court with piracy.

Clad in blue overalls, they appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Lillian Mutende and denied the charges, just a day after another batch of 11 suspected pirates were jailed for five years over the offence.

The court is however to rule whether Abdirahman Isse Mohamud, Mohamed Osman Farah, Feisal Abdi Muse and Noor Ali Mohammed should be released on bond pending the hearing and determination of their case.

The accused had been detained at the local cop shoppe after they arrived in the country and were on Thursday whisked at the Mombasa Law Courts amid tight security where they spent some hours before being arraigned.

The four suspects were charged that on Sept. 20 upon the high seas, within the Indian Ocean, jointly with others who were not before the court, attacked a fishing vessel, Sherry Fishig Dhow and used violence against the crew by firing at them.

It was further stated that they were armed with an AK47 Rifle, pistol and an RPG which they used to take control of the dhow and endangering the lives of the crew in the process.

Senior State Counsel Alexander Muteti opposed an application by defence lawyer Ronald Muyundo to have the suspects released on bond.

"The right to bail is not absolute, the suspects have no known place of abode and it may be difficult to trace them," Muteti said.

But in defence, Muyondo argued that it's known that the suspects are from Somali and "we shall avail all details to ensure that they comply with the regulation requiring them to come to court."

The magistrate is expected to make a ruling over the bond application. Already, the courts have prosecuted and finalized five groups of piracy cases, all of which are facing between five to seven years in jail.

Another group of seven who were jailed for 20 years by Mutende, have since appealed against the judgment.

Somali pirates hijack ship with 15 Indians aboard
(Xinhua) -- Somali pirates have hijacked a Panama-flagged ship, about 100 nautical miles off the coast of Tanzania with 15 Indians, a regional maritime official confirmed on Wednesday.

Andrew Mwangura, the East Africa coordinator of Seafarers Assistance Program (SAP), said MT Asphalt Venture which was sailing to South African port of Durban was hijacked in the early hours of Wednesday.

"The MT Asphalt Venture was hijacked in Tanzanian waters while underway to Durban from Mombasa (Kenya). The vessel is empty and has 15 Indian crew," Mwangura told Xinhua by telephone from Mombasa.

Al-Qaeda displays French hostages
[Al Jazeera] Al-Qaeda in North Africa on Thursday released photographs of seven hostages held in Niger, the first since the group was Islamically kidnapped earlier this month.

The photos released to Al Jazeera show the group, which includes five Frenchies and one each from Madagascar and Togo, sitting on the sand as several gun-hung Islamic tough guyz dressed up like Bedouins stand behind them. It is impossible to identify where the photos were taken.

A front man for the French foreign ministry declined to comment on the photographs.

The group was kidnapped earlier this month, and are reportedly being held in a mountainous region in northwestern Mali. French officials say they have not received any demands from al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the group that carried out the kidnapping.

The hostages are employees of two French firms, Areva and Vinci, which do business in the mining town of Arlit in Niger.

Anne Lauvergeon, the head of Areva, arrived in Niger on Thursday evening to meet with president Saloui Djibo about the hostages.

Joint intelligence centre
Previous AQIM kidnappings have ended with multi-million dollar ransoms. The Spanish government, for example, reportedly paid nearly $5 million to free two aid workers from Mali last month.

Kidnappings have netted more than $65 million for the group over the last five years, according to analysts.

Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the Algerian president, used his United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society General Assembly speech earlier this week to criticise countries that pay ransom to AQIM.

He said the money helped strengthen the group, which is a growing concern for countries in the arid Sahel region. Intelligence chiefs from Mali, Niger, Mauritania and Algeria met in Algiers earlier this week and agreed to set up an intelligence-gathering centre focused on AQIM. The centre will reportedly be based in Algiers.

A US citizen, Mohamed Omar Debhi, was jugged in Spain earlier this week for reportedly sending more than $80,000 to AQIM.

Arabia
Yemen FM confirms US strikes on Qaeda
[Dawn] Yemen's foreign minister acknowledged the United States has launched attacks on Al-Qaeda in his country in an interview published on Thursday, the first confirmation from Sanaa of a US military role.

Abu Bakr al-Kurbi told the Saudi-owned pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat that the US strikes were suspended in December because his government viewed them as counterproductive.

"Fighting Al-Qaeda is the responsibility of security and anti-terrorism forces in Yemen," Kurbi said.

However,
The infamous However...
the New York Times reported in mid August that the US military carried out a secret air strike in May against a suspected Al-Qaeda target in Yemen, killing a deputy provincial governor in the process.

Abu Bakr al-Kurbi said the strike was a secret mission by the US military, and was at least the fourth such assault on Al-Qaeda in the mountains and deserts of Yemen since December.

The United States operates a major counter-terrorism base in Djibouti just across the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait from Yemen.

In June, human rights watchdog Amnesty International released images it said were of fragments of a US Tomahawk cruise missile, reportedly taken at the scene of a December 17 strike in Al-Majalah in Abyan province in the south of Yemen, in which it said 55 people, mostly civilians, were killed.

The White House said US President Barack B.O. Obama's top counter-terrorism advisor John Brennan visited Yemen on September 20 and discussed cooperation in the fight against Al-Qaeda.

The United States has become increasingly concerned about the threat posed by terrorist militancy in Yemen, the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden, particularly the activities of his jihadist network's local franchise, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

In the interview, Kurbi also said that while Yemen had launched a manhunt for US-born jihadist preacher Anwar al-Awlaqi, who is on a US most-wanted list, it would not hand him over if it succeeded in capturing him.

"Awlaqi is in an area where we are conducting operations against Al-Qaeda, and he is among those targeted for arrest in these operations," the Yemeni foreign minister said.

"The US has already requested the extradition of other Yemenis holding US citizenship, but we refused because the Yemeni constitution prohibits the extradition of a Yemeni citizen to a third country. This applies to Awlaqi."

In April, a US official said the B.O. regime had authorised the assassination of Awlaqi, after intelligence agencies concluded the Mohammedan holy man was directly involved in anti-US plots.

Born in the southwestern US state of New Mexico, Awlaqi, 39, rose to prominence last year after he was linked a US army major who rubbed out 13 people in Fort Hood, Texas, and to a Nigerian student accused of trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight on December 25.

Yemen, the poorest country in the Arab world, faces a growing threat from Al-Qaeda, a sporadic Zaidi Shiite rebellion in the north and a separatist movement in the south.

American on Jet Ski Killed by Mexican Pirates on Falcon Lake,TX
Armed boaters ambushed an American tourist and shot him in the back of the head. Six gunmen attacked the 30-year-old American and his wife while they were riding on jet skis. The wife tried to circle back to her husband, but the gunman fired on her, and she had to retreat.

The shooting happened on the Mexican side of Falcon Lake, about 60 miles down the border from Laredo. Earlier this year, several fishermen were robbed at gunpoint on the lake's Mexican side," according to Fox News.

Falcon Lake is a dammed section of the Rio Grande and is part of the border between Mexico and the United States. While the U.S. side of the lake is relatively safe, Americans must be aware that pirates, thieves, and the drug war is spilling over into the United States.

The couple is from McAllen, Texas, and the shooting happened about 2:45 p.m. on Thursday. This is so ridiculous, and there is nothing the U.S. can do to capture these people. Tourism in Mexico is suffering, and Americans need to be aware that traveling to Mexico is not wise right now.

Fishermen and boaters have been warned about the problem for at least the last 2 months. I haven't read of any other shooting to death incidences, but, you know the media.

Not the first incident...

Not sure why they are calling them pirates, but that is the term the police world are calling them.

#6  From the Washington Post on May 30:
Mexican pirates attack Texas fishermen on Falcon Lake, which straddles border

In the past month, crews of outlaws in a small armada of banged-up skiffs and high-powered bass boats launched from the Mexican shore have ambushed bass anglers from the Texas side innocently casting their plastic worms over favorite spots. The buccaneers have struck in Mexican waters but within sight of the Texas shore.

Dressed in black, the pirates brandish automatic weapons, carry radio cellphones and board the anglers' boats. They demand weapons or drugs from their captives, but finding neither, seem satisfied with taking $400 or $500 as booty, according to law enforcement officials and victims' accounts.
Posted by: Sherry || 10/01/2010 15:55 Comments || Top||

#7  The story is fishy. Only one witness, the man's wife. Happened in broad daylight 24 hours ago. Initial news reports from last night were hysterical and extremely vague, e.g., 'Mexican pirates' and 'most likely dead', as opposed to 'gunman on boats' and 'missing and feared dead.'
Of course the MSM prefer news like this to remain in the bit bucket.
The part that gets me is why anyone in their right mind thinks of Falcon Lake as anything other than a WAR ZONE. From the Houston Chronicle web site: Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said 29-year-old Tiffany Hartley fears her husband is dead. She circled back on her Jet Ski to rescue him but had to retreat when she heard bullets whizzing by.
Gonzalez said he had contacted the Mexican consulate to ask them to search for Hartley on its side of the lake.
"I'm not trying to place the blame on her or him," Gonzalez said. "But we've told people not to go over there, and now this happens."
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department spokesman Mike Cox said Friday that the state planned to issue a fresh warning to boaters about staying on the U.S. side of the lake. The last warning came in May, and some campers on the lake have taken to arming themselves.
It appears even the locals don't take the likelihood of being shot at while recreating on this lake, very seriously.

Europe
Osama bin Laden 'behind plot to attack European cities'
Several months ago, bin Laden sent a directive to al-Qaeda affiliates and partners that he wanted a Mumbai-style attack on at least three European countries – the United Kingdom, Germany and France – the US National Public Radio said, citing intelligence officials.

Gunmen had planned to fire on crowds at busy European tourist sites and take over hotels in a plot that would mark a new style of attack for al-Qaeda, although details of the plans remain unclear for now. The United States may also have been in bin Laden's sights.

"We know that Osama bin Laden issued the directive," an unnamed official familiar with intelligence surrounding the plot said.

"And if he issued the directive, we just don't believe that the US wouldn't be on his shortlist of strategic targets. It has to be."

The public radio station said initial intelligence came from Ahmad Siddiqui, a German national currently held at the US-run Bagram Air Base in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Siddiqui is said to have known Mohamed Atta, one of the alleged hijackers in the September 11, 2001 attacks, and to have worshipped at the same mosque in Germany.

The plot is thought to have been inspired by al-Qaeda's fugitive leadership in Pakistan's lawless tribal regions, where a recent surge of US drone attacks sought to eliminate the plotters – and did kill some of them.

Intelligence officials said some of the operatives who had been due to participate in the shootings were already in Europe.

Some officials worried that members of the commando-style teams could be travelling to the West using European passports, thus complicating any effort to find and stop them.

In 2008, 10 heavily armed gunmen killed 166 people in Mumbai and wounded more than 300 in three luxury hotels, a railway station and restaurants in the Indian city.

#2  LOL! I'm sure he did.

Funny how these terrorist plots just happen to be off shoots of groups involved in fighting in Eurasia like the last two terror plots.

How legate will this terrorist plot turn out to be despite the fact that the NGOÂ’s and banks involved in supporting all the major terrorist attacks since the African embassy bombings are still operating today.

#3  Sorry meant to correct a spelling error before I posted were I meant to write "legit".

Anyway as I said before on the Pope article that the jihadist circles operate out of London through British intelligence since the Bosnian war to fight our proxy wars abroad.

Somebody asked I think it was “Dave” if that was true then why did British police arrest Abu Qatada, Abu Hamza, Babar Ahmad, etc.
It is very simple so they canÂ’t be extradited to the US.

#4  The love of money and the power residing therein has throughout history, trumped simple politics and the will of free nations. The late Armand Hammer quickly comes to mind. Whilst his world visionary, bourgeois successors have quickly come to the fore, how he must be the missing modern day exploitations of cheap labor, middle eastern oil, nuclear power, blood diamonds, precious minerals, and other intrigues.

#6  The plot is thought to have been inspired by al-Qaeda's fugitive leadership in Pakistan's lawless tribal regions, where a recent surge of US drone attacks sought to eliminate the plotters -- and did kill some of them.

The narrative here seems too linear. The insinuation (particularly from MSM) seems to be that the recent zaps in N. Wazoo were intended to disrupt potentially eminent attacks in Western Europe. The account seems to imply that Siddiqui squealed and the plot is unfolding. But he’s been jugged for, at least, a couple months. Which means any actionable intel Siddiqui coughed has either already been exploited or has gone stale. There may very well be a nexus. But, given the timing of recent events, it’s more likely the threat was exaggerated to give cover for cross border strikes. And given the current reaction from the Paki’s – they ain’t buying it either.

#8  The bad guys will soon be preparing to go-to-ground in their Pak border sancuaries for the winter months, or enroll in the local 'Chu Hoi' USD village reintegrate program. Continuing ISAF pressure in Afghanistan is causing this transition to occur a bit earlier than usual. The Preds are flying in Pak as part of an effort to hit them while off-balance and migrating. I'd call it a solid, effective plan. The reintegration effort... well, not so much.

#9  Three things come to mind:
One, the 9/11 attack was at least one, and probably as much as three, years in the making. We know how successful it was, and how the entire world has more or less responded to it.
Two, the Mumbai attack was also highly successful, took fewer resources and shorter training time, and is still giving India nightmares. Such an attack in certain parts of Europe would have the potential for casualty figures equal to those from 9/11, and almost impossible to defend against.
Three, the jihadis are getting their clocks cleaned on a regular basis, both in Afghanistan and in Pakistan. Bin Laden would gladly take some of the pressure off, and a successful SERIES of attacks in Europe may be sufficient to do it.

I personally think the references to Siddiqui are disingenuous, and the majority of the actionable intelligence is coming from other sources - a significant increase in money transfers, more communications, more movement of key trainers and facilitators, etc. I do know that a lot of folks are getting extremely antsy in a lot of places over what they see as a very serious plot. Only time will answer all the questions we, the uninformed and unenlightened, may have.

Ex-Red Army Faction member on trial
[Al Jazeera] A former member of the Red Army Faction has gone on trial in Germany for her alleged role in the murder of a federal prosecutor some 33 years ago.
Good idea: "Never forgive, never forget, never 'understand'."
Verena Becker, 58, appeared in the Stuttgart state court on Thursday, charged with participating in the 1977 shooting of Siegfried Buback, one of the most prominent victims of the left-wing urban guerrilla group.

The Western German prosecutor was killed along with two others after two people on a motorcycle sprayed his chauffeur-driven car with bullets as it stopped at a traffic light in Karlsruhe.

Other members of the group - which was also known as the Baader-Meinhof Gang - have previously been handed jail sentences for the murders, but authorities have never been able to determine who fired the shots.

DNA 'evidence'
Michael Buback, the prosecutor's son, said he is "99 per cent" sure that Becker killed his father, but prosecutors have said there is no evidence to suggest she fired the shots.

"We just want to know who is guilty. We only want to know the truth, the truth about this crime, which my father and his two companions fell victim to," he said outside the court.

Becker declined to respond to the charges as they were read out in court, and her defence lawyer said she was not ready to make any statements.
"Me client's got nuttin' to say!"
The former gang member was jugged two months after the murder on 7 April 1977 following a shoot out with police, and sentenced to life that year for six other killings. She was freed in 1989 following a pardon from then president Richard von Weizsaecker.

However charges against her relating to the Buback killing were never proved, and were dropped in 1980 due to lack of evidence, and only re-opened again in 2008, when her DNA was found on a letter from the gang claiming responsibility for the murder.

Her trial is the last major court case of a Red Army Faction fighter.

Wave of killings
The killing was one of several operations carried out by the Red Army Faction, during the peak of its armed campaign against West Germany in the 1970s, dubbed the "German Autumn."

"The murder of Siegfried Buback marked the start of the '77 offensive," prosecutor Walter Hemberger told the court as he read the charges on Thursday.

The group took up arms against what they considered an oppressive capitalist state still run by former Nazis, killing 34 people in attacks on West Germany's elite and US military bases before disbanding in 1998.

In 1977 they also rubbed out a German bank chief and kidnapped and killed industrialist Hanns Martin Schleyer - a former SS officer.

Soon afterwards, German commandos stormed a Lufthansa jet on the tarmac at Mogadishu airport that had been hijacked by Paleostinians who were allied to the gang.

The same day, the gang's jailed "first generation" of leaders, Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan-Carl Raspe, were found dead in their cells.

If convicted, Becker in theory faces a life sentence, but in view of the time already served behind bars, she would likely receive substantially less. A verdict is not expected before late December.

Germans, Brits behind Europe terror plot: official
[Dawn] Eight Germans and two British brothers are at the heart of an al-Qaeda-linked terror plot against European cities, but the plan is still in its early stages, with the suspects calling acquaintances in Europe to plan logistics, a Pak intelligence official said Thursday. One of the Britons died in a recent CIA missile strike, he said.
Anybody want to bet the deader's name wasn't "Clive" or "Percy"?
The revelations underscore the role of Pakistain as a haven for many would-be hard boyz with foreign ties, a worrying prospect for Western countries who face additional challenges when tracking terror suspects among citizens who have passports and easier access to their shores.

Pakistain, Britain and Germany are tracking the suspects and intercepting their phone calls, the official told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named. He said the suspects are hiding in North Wazoo, a Pak tribal region where militancy is rife and where the US has focused many of its drone-fired missile strikes.

''They have been making calls to Germany and London,'' the official said. ''They have been talking about and looking for controllers and logistics they need there to carry out terror strikes.''

Western security officials said Wednesday that a terror plot to wage Mumbai-style shooting sprees or other attacks in Britain, France and Germany was still active. Both European and US officials said the plot was still in its early stages and not considered serious enough to raise the terror threat level.

Still, the Eiffel Tower in Paris was briefly evacuated Tuesday - the second time in two weeks because of an unspecified threat - and there was a heavy police presence around Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Big Ben.

Although he characterised the plot as immature, the Pak official warned against underestimating the suspects, whom he said have backing from al-Qaeda, the Pak Taliban and the Afghan Taliban, all groups that are separate yet interconnected.

''It does not mean that they are not capable of materialisng their designs,'' the official said. ''They are very much working on it.''

The official spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information to the media. He is part of an intelligence team that has been tracking the two British brothers of Pak origin for nearly a year and the Germans for more than six months.

The US has dramatically stepped up its missile attacks in North Wazoo, and is believed to have launched at least 21 this month. The official said a Sept. 8 strike killed one of the Britons, whom he identified as Abdul Jabbar, originally from Pakistain's Jhelum district. Jabbar was believed to be less than 30 years old.
Toldja so...
In Brussels on Thursday, Europol director Robert Wainwright said a drop in terror attacks in Europe - coupled with intelligence that had thwarted major plots in the past - masked an ongoing threat.

''There has been a significant decline in the number of terrorist attacks in Europe - certainly committed by Islamist groups - that hides the reality that these groups are still active,'' Wainwright told AP.

A German intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with the media, said Germany regularly tracks suspected beturbanned goons leaving the country to go to train in Pakistain or Afghanistan, but cannot do anything to prevent them from leaving the country.

When they return, however, German laws enacted since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States now allow authorities to charge people for having trained in such camps.

In August, for example, a 25-year-old German citizen identified only as Rami M. was extradited from Pakistain and charged with membership in a terrorist organisation. According to prosecutors at the time, he left Germany in March 2009 to join a terrorist training camp in Pakistain, where he learned how to handle ''weapons and explosives,'' prosecutors said when he was charged.

He then joined the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan's fighting in the region, the prosecutors said. The group is suspected of terror attacks mostly targeting Pak security forces or Nato's international troops in Afghanistan, prosecutors said.

French authorities, meanwhile, have received indications from allied intelligence services about the possibility of attacks, but no plot outright, a high-ranking French security official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

A recent spate of anonymous, phoned-in bomb threats in Paris - including on the Eiffel Tower - didn't appear to have the ''signature'' of al-Qaeda, the official said, noting the terror network hasn't typically tipped off authorities to attacks in advance.
Perhaps that's just banlieu boys having fun, then. Their version of, "Have you got Prince Albert in a can?"

Paris to strip citizenship of convicts in killing key state figures
[Al Arabiya] French politicians have adopted an amendment in a bill toughening immigration law that would strip nationalized citizens of their nationality if convicted of murdering a police officer or anyone representing the authority of the state.

Critics say the measure amounts to turning immigrants who obtain French nationality into second-class citizens.
How, exactly?
Critics should notice that this only applies to those naturalized citizens who engage in murder, and only murder of officials at that.
The conservative government's amendment was passed 75-57 with one abstention Thursday, in a more than half-empty chamber. It would strip citizenship from people naturalized less than 10 years ago if convicted of murdering police or other authorities.

President Nicolas Sarkozy says that French nationality "should be earned."

The full bill goes to a vote Oct. 12 before heading to the Senate.

The French government says the bill is aimed at bringing French law into line with European Union immigration directives, but rights groups accuse Sarkozy of pursuing a populist anti-immigrant agenda.

The law was put to cabinet by Immigration Minister Eric Besson in March and subsequently toughened by Sarkozy and Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux amid a security clampdown and accelerated mass expulsions of the Roma minority. Under current French law immigrants can be stripped of their nationality if they commit a crime against "the fundamental interests of France" or an act of terrorism.

The fifth immigration law in France in seven years, the bill makes it easier to expel foreigners, including EU citizens who "threaten public order" through repeated theft, aggressive begging or "abusive occupation of land."
That would be the gypsies, I think.
Rights groups say that equating begging or setting up caravans with public order issues plays on fears and prejudices -- and unfairly targets Roma.
Or fairly. That is the question, isn't it.
EU laws on freedom of movement currently only allow removal of EU citizens who represent a "genuine, present and sufficiently serious threat to one of the fundamental interests of society."

Sarkozy, whose approval ratings are at an all-time low, is seeking to consolidate his conservative base ahead of presidential elections in 2012.

The bill allows for the creation of ad hoc detention zones for fast-tracking asylum claims as if the would-be immigrant were not actually in France, making it easier to expel them to a country of origin or of transit.

Second Counterterrorism Operation On I-20
ATLANTA -- Federal agents were out in force again on Thursday searching truck after truck along Interstate 20. The counterterrorism operation took place along I-20 Thursday morning and into the afternoon.

The TSA said the operation is a form of highway homeland security and that federal air marshals are the lead federal agency, but other federal, state and local agencies were working the counterterrorism operation for the second time this week.

A spokesman said K-9s were looking for explosives at a truck inspection site in Douglas County. Checks for radiation appeared to be under way too, Winne said.

The big Customs and Border Protection truck-borne X-ray was also at the scene.

Second attack on Nato tankers
SHIKARPUR: Two people have been killed in an attack on Nato supply trucks in Khuzdar area of Balochistan.

Sources say unidentified persons attacked the trucks carrying supplies for Nato forces in Afghanistan. An unidentified number of trucks have been completely destroyed in the attack. The are has been cordoned off and investigations into the incident are still underway.

This is the second attack on Nato supplies in one day. Earlier, suspected militants attacked and destroyed about 30 Nato oil tankers near Shikarpur. Police said the Nato tankers were en route to Quetta from Karachi via Shikarpur when they were attacked. The tankers were set on fire while parked at a filling station. The police chased the attackers but they managed to flee.

Osama bin Laden tape: al-Qaeda leader criticises governments over Pakistan flood response
A voice purporting to be that of the al-Qaeda leader calls for the creation of a new relief body to aid Muslims.

It was the third message in recent weeks from al-Qaeda figures concerning the massive August floods that displaced 8 million people in Pakistan, signalling a concentrated campaign by the terror group to exploit public discontent and present itself as protectors of the poor.

"What governments spend on relief work is secondary to what it spends on its armies," bin Laden says on the 11-minute tape called, "Reflections on the Method of Relief Work." The authenticity of the tape could not be immediately verified.

Bin Laden said a new "well-funded" relief organisation should be created to study Muslim regions near bodies of water to prevent future flooding, to create development projects in impoverished regions and to work on farming and agriculture to guarantee food security.

He called on Muslim merchants to direct their resources to cultivating agricultural land in countries like Sudan that aren't used for farming.

"Merchants are the knights who will save this region from famine and must avoid investing in worthless projects," he said.

The audiotape was posted on Islamic militant websites, according to the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadi forums and provided a copy of the message. The tape is aired over a still photograph of a smiling bin Laden superimposed over a picture of a man distributing aid.

Bin Laden takes a softer, more humanitarian tone after the two other recent al-Qaeda messages concerning the floods.

In a video released last week, a US-born al-Qaeda spokesman, Adam Gadahn, urged Muslims in Pakistan to join Islamist militants fighting their nation's rulers, saying that Islamabad's "sluggish and half-hearted" response to recent floods showed it did not care for them.

Before that, al-Qaeda's second in command, Ayman al-Zawahri, made a thinly veiled call on Pakistanis to rise up against their government over what he said was the "failure" of authorities there to provide relief to flood victims.

The new message is the first from bin Laden since an audiotape released in March, in which he threatened retaliation if the US executes Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, the self-professed architect of the September 11 attacks

Pakistan army accused of killings
[Al Jazeera] An amateur video posted on a social networking site appears to show Pak troops banging six young men, raising fresh concerns over the conduct of US-backed Pak forces in their battle against Taliban-allied groups.

The blurry video, which runs for more than 5 minutes, shows men in Pak military uniforms lining up blindfolded young men with their hands tied behind their backs before gunning them down.

The Pak military has said the video is fake.
"Tut tut! And tut!"
An organisation called the International Pashtuns' Association posted the video on Facebook and says that the incident took place during the military's crackdown on the Pak Taliban in the Swat valley the summer of 2009.

The Pak government launched the operation after coming under pressure from Washington to do more to stop cross-border Taliban attacks on Nato troops in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The location cannot be identified from the grainy footage, which appears to have been shot on a mobile telephone, but kabooms can be heard in the background as the men are rubbed out by the firing squad.

As the soldiers prepare to fire, one of them asks the commander: "One by one, or together?" "Together" is the reply. The conversation is in Urdu, the language used by the Pak military.
And also by civilian Urdus. It's not a secret military language, despite the confusion of the Al Jazeera reporter.
Video unverified
The authenticity of the video cannot be independently confirmed by Al Jazeera, and the Pak government have said it was fabricated. But US media has quoted anonymous American officials who believe that the video is authentic.

The uniforms and rifles appear to be consistent with Pakistain's standard military equipment, and a former Pak general told Al Jazeera that while the video could not be verified, the images should be taken seriously. "We have to take it at face value at the moment, and take it seriously," said Talat Masood. "My view is that the CIA and ISI are in a much better position to authenticate this."

"It looks as though they are Pak troops, but there are several other aspects that need to be re-checked before we can say that it is authentic."

He said that he thought the Pak military would "absolutely" investigate the authenticity of the video, because if confirmed it could do serious damage to Pakistain's strategy in tackling the Taliban. "I'm sure that this is not the military policy," he said. "It would undermine the whole war on terror, which is not just military, but about winning hearts and minds."

'Credible Allegations'
Human rights groups say the video fits in with "credible allegations" they have received about the conduct of Pak troops. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistain said in June that 282 extra-judicial killings by the army had taken place in the Swat region in the past year.

Amnesty International told Al Jazeera that while it could not confirm the authenticity of the video, but that it has "received credible reports of suspected beturbanned goons being summarily executed by the Pak security forces in Pakistain's swat valley."

"There have also been a number of sightings of mass graves in the region, with notes attached to the dead bodies, warning local people not to join the Taliban otherwise they would meet the same fate," said Maya Pastakia, Amnesty's specialist in Afghan and Pakistain. She said it was impossible to definitively tell who was behind the killings, pointing out that tribal conflicts could be playing out in an environment of chaos and insecurity.

Human Rights Watch says it has received "numerous credible reports of extra-judicial executions allegedly committed by soldiers operating in Swat," adding that the Pak military has not investigated the allegations sufficiently.

Meenakshi Ganguly, Human Rights Watch's South Asia Director, also called on the Pak authorities to investigate the video, and if it turns out to be genuine, to hold those responsible to account.

"We hope this is not true, but the government of Pakistain must investigate thoroughly. We have documented allegations in the past of extra-judicial killings carried out by the Pak military," she told Al Jazeera.

Headache for US
If confirmed, the video could raise a legal headache for the US, which is bound by law not to give military aid and assistance to foreign armies found to have committed gross human rights violations.

Considered a key partner in the efforts to defeat the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Pakistain and Afghanistan, the Pak military has received $10 billion from Washington since 2001, when the Taliban were overthrown by a US-led coalition.

The US State department described the images as "horrifying," and has said that the issue will be raised with the Pak government by Anne Patterson, the US ambassador to Pakistain.

Pakistan holds government worker in NYC plot
[Dawn] An employee at Pakistain's state-run Islamic advisory body has been detained for allegedly playing an important role in assisting the failed New York Times Square car bomber, an intelligence officer said Thursday.

The suspect accompanied Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistain-American bomber, to Pakistain's northwest to meet beturbanned goon leaders, said the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the intelligence agency does not permit its operatives to be named in the media.

The suspect, identified as Faisal Abbasi, was with Shahzad throughout his time in Pakistain, the officer said.

He said Abbasi worked for the government's Council of Islamic Ideology, which advises on Islamic affairs.

The secretary general of the council confirmed Abbasi had worked there but had been on ''vacation'' for the last three months.

Pakistain has already charged three men with assisting Shahzad while in Pakistain and sending him money in America.

Shahzad is due to be sentenced in the United States on Oct. 5. He has pleaded guilty to the May 1 failed bombing.

Up to 20 Britons training in Pakistan terror camps: report
[Dawn] Up to 20 Britons are undertaking terrorist training in Pakistain to launch attacks in Britain, a report said Thursday, citing intelligence sources.

Al-Qaeda and associated Islamic myrmidon groups are training the young Mohammedans, who hold British passports, in Pakistain's tribal areas, Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper said.
Could something be done to rid us of these troublesome camps?
They are being trained to use firearms and explosives in order to carry out shooting sprees in Britain, intelligence sources are cited as saying in the daily paper.

"We believe there are 15 to 20 Britons in the camps," a source in Islamabad told the Telegraph, on condition of anonymity.

The report came after it emerged that Western intelligence agencies had uncovered an Al-Qaeda plot by Pakistain-based bully boyz to attack Britain, France and Germany, according to security sources and media reports.

Militants were planning simultaneous strikes in London and cities in France and Germany, in attacks similar to those in Mumbai two years ago, British and US media reported.

#1  And on a lighter note: More than 100 people have been arrested or charged in the U.S. and the U.K. as part of an alleged global cybercrime ring using computer viruses to steal bank-account information and loot money from unsuspecting victims...The prosecutors alleged a scheme in which hackers used malicious computer software known as Zeus Trojan, disguised in seemingly benign email. When the email recipient clicks on a link or attachment in the email, the virus monitors the victim's computer activity to grab user names and passwords.
The hackers, according to U.S. prosecutors, would use the stolen data to move money from victims' accounts to accounts held by the mules, who would either wire it overseas or take it out in cash.

P.S. Zip Lining update: The property where we Zip Lined has been used for several movies including that POS "Tropic Thunder". Johnny Depp was there two weeks ago filming scenes for the next "Pirates". He didn't Zip Line but instead went on the tubing trip down the irrigation canal. Whata woos!

#2  Aloha. Glad you and KB are enjoying yourselves, GB.

One thing you can say about Duane's - "If you don't like the food, you can 'crow about the ambiance'."

My wife and I love the place although the last time we were there, she brought extra tid-bits for the 'residents'. That was interesting, to say the least, and probably not appreciated by the other patrons.
