#1  Note that the article quotes a NATO official as saying that only 2% of Eureopean troops are usable and deployable and that European militaries "pathetically ill-equipped for the world we foresee." Not very comforting, although it seems pretty hard on the Brits, who seem to me to be hanging very tough despite the MOD reducing their combat equipment to slingshots.

Bangladesh
HUJI big turban admits he boomed commies in 2001
[Bangla Daily Star] Harkatul Jihad al Islami (Huji) leader Mufti Moin Sheikh alias Abu Zandal yesterday confessed his involvement in Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) rally blast case, 2001 before a Dhaka court.
Q: What's the difference in Bangladesh between a Communist terrorist and a professionally pius Muslim politician?
A: Age and experience.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Sahadat Hossain recorded Zandal's confessional statement under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Act after Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced him before the court.

CID and court sources said the Huji leader, in a 19-page statement, admitted his presence and participation in the blast at Paltan Maidan in a rally of CPB on January 21, 2001.

Zandal is the first accused who confessed his involvement in the infamous blast that killed five people and injured 50 more.

Mayhem in Nuevo Leon: 2 Dead
Google Translate. For a map, click here
Direct assaults in three separate instances in the northeast Mexican state of Nuevo Leon led to a total of two armed suspects dead, and several wounded, according to Mexican news sources.

In Monterrey, a police station on Avenida Felix Uresti Gomez was attacked when a grenade detonated in front of a guard house wounding one police agent. Damage was limited to window glass and some lighting. Reports say a lone suspect threw the grenade into the guard station then fled the scene.

Later international reports put the wounded total to four and said two armed suspects were involved in the assault.

Also, early Sunday morning a detachment of the Mexican 7th Military Zone fought a battle with armed suspects in General Teran which lasted 30 minutes. Reports say the army patrol came across a convoy of trucks, the occupants of which apparently open fired on the soldiers. Two armed suspects died in the ensuing firefight.

Reports say about 10 other armed suspects managed to escape the scene without harm or arrest. Soldiers seized a single vehicle. At last report the military was conducting searches in the area for the remaining suspects.

General Teran is a town about 75 kilometers southeast of Monterrey.

Also, early Sunday morning a Monterrey police intelligence center, known as the C5, was assaulted with small arms by unidentified armed suspects.

The assault was of short duration, so the building suffered minor damage and no one was reported hurt in the attack.

The center is on the National Highway to Reynosa. Tamaulipas. Following the attack snipers were deployed nearby as a countermeasure to future attacks.

On Saturday at about 1500 hrs, Mexican federal agents with army detachments deployed in the university town of San Nicolas de los Garza at the stadium of Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon for a security exercise.

Mexican security authorities denied the exercise was because of threats of an attack on the metric football game between two university teams.

San Nicolas de los Garza is a suburb of Monterrey.

Atiyah Abd al Rahman Zapped? Or Not?
Rumors abound but sources are fuzzy at best. It does look like there are probably some big fish in that small pond of North Wazoo, and they should be getting very nervous (if such is still biologically possible for them.)
You mean the ones who haven't already kissed their own drone?
A senior al Qaeda leader who serves as al Qaeda's ambassador to Iran, and is wanted by the US, is reported to have been killed in a Predator airstrike in Pakistan's Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan two days ago. The report has not been confirmed.

The first is Atiyah Abd al Rahman, a Libyan national who has been based in Iran and served as Osama bin Laden's ambassador to the mullahs. Unconfirmed press reports indicate that Rahman was killed in an airstrike earlier this week.

Atiyah Abd al Rahman may have been among one of four "militants" killed in an Oct. 7 airstrike on a compound and a vehicle in the village of Khaisoori in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan. Another operative identified as Khalid Mohammad Abbas al Harabi was also reportedly killed.

Hamburg-Based Islamists Targeted in US Drone Attack

#1
The meeting was supposed to be a kind of commemoration for Sept. 11, 2001, nine years after the terror attacks on the US. Except it wasn't taking place in Hamburg, where several of the 9/11 hijackers had lived for a time, but in the Pakistani town of Mir Ali.

The town, controlled by al-Qaida and Pashtun tribes, is a hotbed of jihadists. Investigators believe that three men from Germany lived directly next to each other in Mir Ali: Ahmad Sidiqi, 36, Shahab Dashti, 27 and Naamen Meziche, 40. They had left Hamburg in March 2009 with the aim of waging jihad.

According to Sidiqi, there was a surprise guest at the meeting, another man from Hamburg who had disappeared from Germany nine years earlier. He was Said Bahaji, 35, one of the last backers of the 9/11 attacks still at large. He had shared an apartment with some of the 9/11 hijackers and, on Sept. 3, 2001, had fled to Karachi. After that he was believed to have found safe haven in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

For all the talk about NATO support, its been the Americans taking the war to the enemy in their nests rather than sitting back for another series of bombings in London or Madrid followed by the usual bureaucratic hand wringing and 'round up of the usual suspects'. May we say it, the best defense is an offensive.

Suspected US missile strikes kill 8 in Pakistan
Suspected U.S. unmanned aircraft launched a pair of missile strikes in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, killing at least eight people in the latest attacks targeting militants who pose a threat to foreign forces in Afghanistan.

The identities of the people killed were not known, but the area where the strikes occurred is dominated by a militant group led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur that regularly attacks NATO troops in Afghanistan, said Pakistani intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

In the first attack, a drone fired two missiles at a pair of cars in an Afghan refugee camp in the North Waziristan tribal area, killing six people as the vehicles and a house nearby were destroyed, said the officials. The camp is located in the Spin Wam area near Mir Ali, one of the main towns in North Waziristan, they said.

Minutes later, a drone killed two people near the bank of a river located just outside the refugee camp, the officials said.

The strikes were the ninth and tenth carried out in Pakistan this month, continuing a surge in such attacks by the Obama administration. There were at least 21 drone strikes in Pakistan in September -- nearly double the previous monthly record.

The U.S. rarely acknowledges the drone strikes publicly, but officials have said privately that they have killed several senior al-Qaida and Taliban commanders.

Pakistan officially opposes the strikes as a violation of the country's sovereignty, but it is widely believed to help the CIA carry out the attacks.

Karachi police claim arresting two button men
[Pak Daily Times] The city police claimed to have jugged two suspects from Orangi Town in connection with assassinations in Karachi on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference at the Central Police Office (CPO), Karachi Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Fayyaz Laghari claimed that Naseem Haider alias Firaun and Asif Rasheed alias Dumba were involved in assassinations of Shia scholars and doctors.

According to in charge of Investigation Zone West I, SP Khurram Waris, the police received a tip-off that cut-throats would target another doctor in Saleemabad and spotted the culprits travelling on a motorcycle bearing registration number KBP-8591.

When the police party tried to intercept them, an encounter took place and the suspects were finally jugged from Block D, Orangi Town, he said.

Interestingly, the area residents, from where the men were allegedly jugged, said the two men were jugged on Friday after a brawl with police personnel over using drugs at a public place near Ghousia Noor Masjid in Orangi Town, Block J, Sector 11/2.

Moreover, Daily Times published a story on October 9 on Firaun's arrest from Sector 111/2 of Orangi Town within the limits of Iqbal Market cop shoppe before the Friday prayers.

He was handed over to the officials of one of the teams investigating the twin kabooms at the shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi.

Various police officers, investigating terror-related cases, had confirmed that Firaun was an activist of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi but was not active now, evident from the fact that he was not being jugged in recent cases of terrorism. They said that Firaun had become a drug addict after his release from jail in 2007 and roamed around in the area throughout the day.

The police declined the arrests of the alleged accused persons on Friday.

Laghari, meanwhile, claimed that the two suspects were involved in the murder cases of several Shia doctors including Maulana Ghulam Muhammad, Muhammad Hussain, Dr Najam-ul-Hassan, Dr Mehtab Hussain and Shiraz.

The CCPO said the suspects were affiliated with the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and leading a group involved in sectarian killings.

During investigation, they have revealed that they were planning to attack Ahmedi religious places before the PS-94 by-election, he added.

The police also claimed to have seized a Kalashnikov and two TT pistols from their possession.

The alleged culprits had also been charged previously in sectarian cases but were bailed out from courts.

Suspect Firaun was in Karachi Central Prison from 2003 to 2007 on similar charges and was released over lack of evidence.

"We will hold monthly meetings and review investigations of assassinations and other high profile cases," he said while explaining the preventive measures taken by the police department.

He said the city police have divided assassination cases into four categories: sectarian, ethnic, political and random killings.

According to Laghari, the CPO has recorded a total of 230 assassinations this year while 32 accused have been jugged.

Regarding the investigation of Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine blast, the police chief said that clues on identification of boomers have been found but cannot be disclosed as it would sabotage the investigation process.

Gunmen confess to bombing Arabiya's Iraq office
[Al Arabiya] Iraqi authorities broadcast on state TV Sunday confessions of two men jugged for the bombing of Al Arabiya TV's office in Storied Baghdad on July 26 saying they worked for the Al-Qaeda terror network.

The confessions, broadcast widely on several local channels, were aired at a time when Iraqi forces are under pressure to demonstrate their ability to fight snuffies as U.S. troops prepare for a complete withdrawal from Iraq by end-2011.

One man, Sinan Abid, 29, said he was personally involved in preparing suicide bomb attacks on the Iranian, Egyptian and German embassies in April in which at least 41 people died.

"My role was to link up the electrical circuit in the car after planting explosives, and then briefing the boomer on how to blow up the car when he reached the target," he said.

The other man, Abdulla Salih, 34, said he helped prepare explosives for the suicide bomb attack on the Baghdad office of Arabiya TV channel in which at least four people were killed.

"I work for al-Qaeda the Islamic State of Iraq, in the bomb-making division," said Salih, looking straight into the camera. "We planted explosives in a minivan to target Al Arabiya TV and the process took us two days."
