Pirates seize ship that sailed from Jebel Ali
[Emirates 24/7] Suspected Somali pirates seized a Malaysian freighter and its crew last week in the Indian Ocean, taking the number of hostages currently held past the 500 mark, the European Union said Monday.

The EU anti-piracy naval force Navfor said the container-ship Albedo was captured approximately 900 nautical miles (1,660 kilometres) from Mogadishu early Friday.

"The MV Albedo is Malaysian-flagged and owned, with a crew of 23 (Pak, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Iranian)," a Navfor statement said. "The vessel was carrying containers and was bound for Mombasa from Jebel Ali in the UAE."

Including the Albedo, pirates are currently holding 22 vessels with 521 hostages, Navfor said.

Boilerplate follows...
Piracy has long been a problem
in the Indian Ocean off Somalia, where the lack of a functioning government over most of the last 15 years has allowed its vast coastline to be turned into a perfect refuge for criminal gangs.

Somali clashes leave 15 civilians dead
[Iran Press TV] At least 15 have been killed and 20 others injured in fighting between African Union (AU) troops and local al-Shaboobs in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Heavy festivities erupted between the two sides near Mogadishu's international airport early Monday morning, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Hundreds of people have reportedly decamped the area due to the exchange of fire between AU troops and al-Shaboobs.

The fresh festivities came two days after 18 civilians bit the dust and more than 30 others sustained injuries in another battle between the two sides.

Al-Shabaab accuses African Union troops -- who are backing Somalia's transitional government -- of invading the country. The fighters say they will continue their battles until the AU forces withdraw from Somalia.

The Somali government controls only a few areas around the presidential palace.

For months, Mogadishu has been the scene of daily battles between government forces and local fighters -- both of whom are trying to take control of the capital.

The peacekeepers, however, claim that they have made advances in the Somali capital over the past months.

Somalia has lacked a functioning government since 1991 when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Over the past two decades, up to a million people have bit the dust in the fighting between rival factions and also due to famine and disease.

There are more than 1.4 million internally displaced people in Somalia. Mogadishu, alone, contains over 300,000 of this uprooted population.

Most of the displaced live in squalid conditions in makeshift camps in southern and central Somalia, according to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society High Commissioner for Refugees.

S Sudanese 'flee border area'
[Al Jazeera] At least 1,500 south Sudanese civilians have beat it from areas along the north--south border fearing aerial attack on Bahr al-Ghazal by the Sudan Armed Forces, the UN and southern officials said.

Giovanni Bosco, the head of the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs in southern Sudan, said on Monday that there was no formal camp set up to receive the new arrivals, but the UN was helping the local community feed them.

"People are leaving their villages because of the military tensions in the area," he said.

Officials in the area say they have received "hundreds" of additional arrivals in just the last few days, and some reports put the number of overall displaced much higher.

"The report we received says 2,500 have been displaced in the area," said southern army (SPLA) front man Philip Aguer.

Northern government officials were unavailable for comment on the reports. The SPLA says northern forces are still flying fighter planes along the border to scare southern villagers.

"Khartoum's newly-acquired Chinese planes are flying in the area.

"They are trying to cause terror and disrupt the referendum," Aguer told Rooters.

Voter registration for a referendum in south Sudan to decide whether the oil producing region secedes from the north has recently been extended to end on December 8.

The vote is part of a 2005 peace deal between the dominant parties of the north and south, ending decades of civil war that claimed two million lives.

Relations between north and south Sudan have threatened to boil over in the build-up to the southern vote.

Sudan's economy depends on oil, located mostly in the south, and Khartoum does not want to lose an important source of revenue.

Elders Release Saudi Family in Northern Yemen
[Yemen Post] Tribal elders on Monday arranged the release of a Saudi physician along with his family, a day after they were kidnapped by armed rustics in northern Yemen.

Local sources said more than 120 elders from the tribe of Waela pledged today to follow up the issue of a detainee from the tribe responsible for the kidnapping, Al Ubada, who was held by the authorities in return for setting free the Saudi family.

The elders gathered early Monday and promised to release the family, which was snatched to pressure the government to release the detainee, held in connection with links to Al-Qaeda, they said.

We would handle the issue, but the forces should come back, they said, as the forces arrived in Saada to release the Saudis, they said, according to the sources.

We would also contact the Political Security over the release of your detainee, if he was not convicted of Al-Qaeda charges, the elders told Al Ubada rustics.

Armed rustics from Al Ubada clan kidnapped the Saudi family, demanding the authorities to release Abdullah Hussein Ubada said to be in the custody of the Political Security and other tribal detainees inside Saudi jails.

A tribal mediation failed to release the family as its members were kidnapped on Sunday. After the incident, Al-Salam Hospital in Saada closed down in solidarity with its kidnapped director physician Dhafir Al-Shahri and his family.

Bangladesh
'Mugger' killed in 'shootout'
[Bangla Daily Star] An alleged mugger was killed while another bullet injured in "shootouts" with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the city's Bangshal and Keraniganj yesterday.
"Aaaiiieee! I am bullet injured!"
[Gasp!][Twitch!]"Rosebud!"

The dear departed identified as Shamsul Islam Tipu, 21,
A rich man, he was given three names all his own at birth, and therefore had no need of an alias.
was a resident of Bagdasha Lane of Bangshal while injured Mohammad Sohel, 28, of Kotubpara of Keraniganj.
Anyone named Mohammad needs at least a second name, like Catholic girls named Mary.
In Bangshal, a team of plainclothes Rab personnel in the guise of rickshaw passengers
Must have been a budget increase while we weren't looking, to cover the payment to the richshaw driver.
was patrolling around 4:30am when three youths waylaid a rickshaw carrying two of the Rab members near Armanitola, said Officer-in-Charge Jamiruddin Ahmed of Bangshal Police Station quoting an official of the Rab-10 team.
This strikes me as unwise.
The OC said that as the youths wielding firearms tried to snatch the belongings of the Rab men,
Very unwise.
they fired shots in which one of the muggers sustained bullet injuries.

Hearing gunshots locals rushed to the spot and identified the injured as Tipu, a known criminal in the area.
So unbeloved was he, that the locals pretended he had only one name, like the poorest dregs in the gutter.
Tipu's accomplices, however, managed to flee the scene.
... as though they had never been...

One pistol and three bullets were recovered from the spot.
Marked X, of course.
Rab personnel took Tipu to Mitford Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
He's dead, Jim!

Tipu's brother Bulbul told The Daily Star that some law enforcers in plain clothes jugged Tipu from Mirhajirbagh of Jatrabari on November 14. A general diary was filed with Jatrabari Police Station in this connection.

He also said Tipu was an office bearer of Ward-68 BNP.
A political hack as well as a mugger? Interesting combination of careers...
Rab-10 in a blurb claimed that Tipu was accused in six cases including those for murder with Kotwali and Bangshal cop shoppes.
Accused in six cases, wanted on twelve planets. Now the file can be closed, permanently.
Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
another Rab team in plain clothes was intercepted by a gang of muggers while they were patrolling Keraniganj area around 12:00midnight, Rab sources said.

The muggers tried to rob the Rab personnel at knife-point, which prompted the law enforcers to shoot them.
Literally, brought a knife to a gunfight, poor things.
The firing left one of the muggers bullet hit in the leg
Knee or foot? Curious minds want to know.
while the other gang members beat feet.

The Rab team caught injured Sohel
It's hard to run with a shattered kneecap (or a bloody big hole in one's foot)
and handed him over to Keraniganj police, said Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abul Basher of South Keraniganj Police Station. A case was filed in this connection.
Turned over to the police? How mortifying!
One knife, two cellphones and Tk 530 were also recovered from the spot.

The OC said Sohel was a runaway criminal but could not mention the case in which he was accused.

China-Japan-Koreas
S.Korea to Stage Fresh Firing Drill on Yeonpyeong Island
[Chosun Ilbo] Yeonpyeong Island amid continued North Korean threats against South Korea since an artillery attack on the island last week.

The military is determined to pulverize North Korean artillery positions if they fire shells again. On Monday it deployed six U.S.-made Multiple Launch Rocket Systems for the first time on the island, as well as six more K-9 self-propelled howitzers. Each MLRS shell is capable of destroying an area the size of one to three soccer fields.

A government source on Monday said, "There has been strong criticism that we responded too passively to the artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island, so we decided to stage the same kind of fire drill as the one we carried out on the island on Nov. 23 to display our determination." He added the timing of the drill will not be announced in advance.

The military will fire in a southwesterly direction, using K-9 self-propelled howitzers. The Joint Chiefs of Staff considered staging the drill on Tuesday but delayed it at the request of the U.S. military.

Early last week, the North shelled the island, claiming that the South had fired shells at its territorial waters, and has since continued to threaten a "physical retaliatory counterattack" if South Korean military exercises continue.

Each MLRS carries 12 rocket shells with a diameter of 227 mm. Each shell is filled with about 500 cluster munitions, each of which has the detonating power of a single hand grenade. They are more powerful than the North Korean MLRS.

With a range of 32 to 45km, the South's MLRS can hit inland areas in the North as well as MLRS deployed on the western coast. They were first used during the Gulf War in 1991.

Military authorities are determined to launch surgical strikes by mobilizing fighter planes depending on the magnitude of future North Korean provocations.

#4  Interesting indeed that they are pecking at each other across the water at Yeonpyeong Island instead of across the DMZ. Almost as if they want to show how tough they are but they're not really ready for the big show on land where stakes are higher and the escalation could get out of control very quickly. Just as well, I guess.

Swiss voters back deportation plan
[Al Jazeera] Switzerland has endorsed a far-right push to automatically expel foreign residents convicted of certain crimes, to the dismay of critics who described it as a "dark day for human rights."
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...

The approval of the initiative in a referendum was an expression of insecurity, Simonetta Sommaruga, the country's justice minister said, stressing the government would examine how to implement the new rule without violating its international obligations.

In the vote, 52.9 per cent were in favour of automatic expulsions and 47.1 per cent were against, with the country's German-speaking majority largely backing the proposal.

Only six of the country's 26 cantons rejected the initiative.

The vote came exactly a year after Switzerland shocked the world by agreeing to ban the construction of new minarets, which was another proposal backed by the far-right Swiss People's Party (SVP).

The decision on Sunday "is a first step on the way towards greater security," said the SVP in a statement.

As with their campaign against minarets, the far-right party launched an aggressive push for the expulsion of foreign criminals, saying those guilty of certain crimes should be stripped of their right to remain in the country.

Mosque 'arson' after US bomb sting
[Al Jazeera] A suspected arson attack has destroyed part of a mosque attended by a US-Somali man accused of plotting a car boom attack on a Christmas ceremony in the US state of Oregon, Sherlocks have said.

One room in the Corvallis Mosque was gutted in the blaze on Sunday while neighbouring rooms suffered smoke damage, according to the town's fire department.

Officials said there were no injuries in the blaze, which was extinguished within 10 minutes.

"We do have evidence that it was arson," Carla Pusateri of Corvallis Fire Department, said.

The fire occurred less than two days after Mohamed Osman Mohamud, who had attended prayers in the mosque, was jugged while attempting to detonate what he thought was a car boom at a crowded Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland.

In what turned out to be a sting operation by the FBI, Mohamud tried to remotely detonate a fake device supplied by undercover agents who had contacted Mohamud months before and pretended to be accomplices in the plot.

The 19-year-old took classes at Oregon State University in Corvallis, about 130km south of Portland, and the imam at Salman Alfarisi Islamic Centre, where the mosque was related, had previously told local television that Mohamud "occasionally" attended prayers there.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation offered up to $10,000 for information leading to a conviction in the arson case, saying it would not tolerate attacks on the Mohammedan community.

"This is a big, dangerous mess," Imam Mikal Shabazz, president of the Oregon Islamic Chaplains Organisation and a prominent Mohammedan activist in Portland, said on Sunday as he learned of the mosque fire.

Shabazz said he had just spoken with an African-American Mohammedan woman who was verbally attacked by a young man in southwest Portland before others intervened in her defence.

Sam Adams, Portland's mayor, said late on Sunday that he had increased security at city mosques,

Mohamud was due to appear in court on Monday, facing a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of the charge of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

A US government complaint quoted him praising the 9/11 attacks on the US and expressing a desire to see "body parts and blood" in Portland.

[Pak Daily Times] A Shia leader was rubbed out by an unidentified gunman in Mehmoodabad on Monday. in an apparent sectarian killing incident as Muharram approaches.

Ferozabad police said Pasban-e-Aza president Nayyar Zaidi, 50, was travelling in his car with his nephew. An armed man intercepted them near the railway line in Chenesar Goth. He dragged out Zaidi from the car and shot him five times, they added.

DSP Chauhadry Asad said the culprit resorted to firing with a submachine gun and managed to flee on a cycle of violence parked a few feet away from the spot.

The body was handed over to the family after medico-legal formalities. The police, with the help of Zaidi's nephew, have drawn the sketch of the killer.

After the incident, tension prevailed in Soldier Bazaar, Ancholi, Rizvia and other Shia-majority areas while heavy contingents of law enforcers were called in.

Five gunmen, one policeman killed in IHK
[Pak Daily Times] A shootout on Monday in a crowded marketplace in the Indian-held Kashmire killed three gunnies and one policeman, while two suspected cut-throats were killed in another fighting, officials said. Gunmen, on a cycle of violence, opened fire on a police patrol in the Qamarwari district of Srinagar, the main city in Indian-held Kashmire, a police statement said. "In the retaliatory fire, three cut-throats were killed while one police constable also laid down his life," the statement said. Police set up checkpoints in the area following intelligence that gun-hung tough guys were planning an attack in the city, said Police Chief Ashiq Bukhari. Also on Monday, two suspected rebels were killed in fighting with Indian troops in the forested area of Handwara, a police statement said. There was no immediate comment on either incident from rebel groups. Anti-India sentiment runs deep in the disputed Mohammedan-majority region. Govt demands life term for 5 US nationals
[Pak Daily Times] A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing of a government appeal, seeking enhancement in the sentence of five Americans, who had been convicted for plotting terrorist attacks.
Go for it. We don't want 'em back.
The bench directed the LHC registrar office to fix the appeal along with the appeals of the convicts against their sentence.

The government appealed to the court that the sentence awarded to the convicts was not stringent since their crime was of serious nature. It requested that they should be handed down life imprisonment.

An anti-terrorism court of Sargodha had on June 24 awarded 10-year imprisonment to Egyptian national Ramay Zamzam, Waqar Khan and Umar Farooq of Pak descent, and Aman Hassan Yamar and Ahmed Abdullah Mani of Ethiopian descent. They are naturalised Americans.

The Sargodha police had jugged them in December 2009 on suspicion of plotting terror attacks in Pakistain and for their alleged connections with banned terrorist outfits.

Iraq
Tariq Aziz gets 10 years in prison for Kurd killings
[Emirates 24/7] An Iraqi court sentenced former deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz to 10 years in prison on Monday for the displacement and killing of minority Faili Kurds during the rule of Saddam Hussein.
And now we know, thanks to WikiLeaks, that Iraqi prisons are not up to American standards. Nor Iraqi prison guards. Do enjoy your stay, Former Deputy Prime Minister.
Aziz, the longtime international face of Saddam's regime, has already been sentenced to death for the suppression of Shiite religious parties in the 1980s, although there have been international calls for him to be spared.

"The courts issued a 10-year prison sentence against Tareq Aziz and Ahmed Hussein Khodayr," a spokesman for the supreme criminal court said. Khodayr was an aide to the now executed dictator.

In poor health and among Saddam's few surviving top cohorts, Aziz, 74, has been in prison since surrendering in April 2003, shortly after the capture of Baghdad in the US-led invasion of Iraq.

Aziz, who was born to a Christian family, was foreign minister and deputy prime minister under Saddam, who was hanged in December 2006.

The death sentence, which was handed down on October 26, provoked a wave of appeals for clemency from around the world, including from human rights groups, the European Union, Russia and the Vatican.

Saadun Shaker, a former interior minister, Aziz Saleh al-Nohman and Mizban Khoder Hadi, both members of regional Baath party commands, were meanwhile all sentenced to death in connection with the displacement and killing of Faili Kurds during the Iran-Iraq war which stretched from 1980 to 1988.

WikiLeaks says it's under powerful cyberattack
Let's play...
The site was under attack Sunday, but Tuesday's attack appears to be more powerful. WikiLeaks said the malicious traffic was coming in at 10 gigabits per second, which would make it a relatively large effort.

#6  Apparently, the WikiLeaks defense involves the use of Amazon.com servers to redirect traffic or provide alternate hosting. The details are quite beyond me but amazon must have a acre or more of servers.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran accuses CIA as scientist killed
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Twin blasts in Iran's capital killed a top nuclear scientist and maimed another today, with Tehran swiftly blaming the CIA and Mossad for the attacks apparently carried out by men on cycle of violences.

Slain scientist Majid Shahriari and Fereydoon Abbasi Davani, who survived the attack, were senior figures in Iran's nuclear programme, which the West suspects of having military aims. Tehran denies the charge.

Tehran police chief Hossein Sajedi-nia said men on cycle of violences attached bombs to the windows of the scientists' cars in different parts of the capital as they made their way to work. The bombs went kaboom! seconds later.

"Dr Shahriari was killed and his wife and driver were maimed. Dr Abbasi and his wife have been injured," he was quoted as saying in media reports.

Iranian leaders accused the US and Israeli intelligence services, the CIA and Mossad, of killing the two who were also professors at Tehran's prestigious Shahid Beheshti University.

"One can undoubtedly see the hands of Israel and Western governments in the liquidation which unfortunately took place," President Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad told a news conference.

Mr Ahmadinejad's office said in an earlier statement that "the Zionist regime this time shed the blood of university professor Dr Majid Shahriari to curb Iran's progress."

Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said the "Mossad and the CIA are the enemies of Iranians" whose "desperate terrorist act against the two academics shows their weakness and inferiority."
