Afghanistan
Two dead as suicide bombers storm Afghan recruitment centre
[Dawn] Four suicide kaboomers stormed an army recruitment centre in northern Afghanistan early Sunday sparking a shootout that left two soldiers dead and three others maimed, officials said.

"Four bombers attacked the recruitment centre. Three of them have been rubbed out and one is still resisting," Hameedullah Danishi, the deputy provincial governor, told AFP.
What, exactly, does resisting entail?
Kunduz is one of the most volatile provinces in the relatively peaceful north of Afghanistan.

"So far two Afghan soldiers have been killed and three are maimed," Mahboubullah Saeedi, the front man for the provincial governor, said.

In a separate assault, a suicide kaboomer opened fire on an army bus in the capital Kabul. He was shot by coppers and his explosives detonated setting two vehicles ablaze, interior ministry front man Zemarai Bashari told AFP.

Bashary did not give any figures on casualties and said police had cordoned off the area and were still assessing the damage and impact of the blast.

Afghan clashes end, troops reclaim base
[Iran Press TV] Afghan authorities say a day-long shootout between gunnies and security forces in northern Afghanistan, which left several troops dead, has ended.

The deadly clash broke out earlier on Sunday following the seizure of an army recruiting center. Four armed gunnies wearing vests wired with explosives stormed the recruiting center in Konduz Province, killing eight security personnel.

"The fighting is over," Zemarai Bashary, an interior ministry front man told AFP in the capital, Kabul.

Security officials in Konduz say troops managed to kill two of the attackers while another pair occupied the facility throughout the day.

Bashary said the remaining two rebels had been bumped off by Afghan cops, but did not elaborate on the operation.

The victims included four coppers and four army soldiers.

In a separate attack, gunnies ambushed an army bus outside the country's main recruitment center on the outskirts of Kabul.

President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai condemned the attack as "criminal," stressing that "the attacks were a major and unforgiving crime... [by] Afghanistan's enemies opposing the strengthening of Afghan cops."

Kidnappers release 2 Bangladeshis
[Bangla Daily Star] The Afgan kidnappers yesterday freed two of the seven Bangladeshi workers kidnapped near the Mazar-I-Sharif town in Afghanistan on Friday night.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
the government is "vigorously" trying to rescue others and bring back the body of the Bangladeshi killed in an attack by Afghan gunnies on the same night, said officials at the foreign ministry's consular and welfare cell.

Deceased Kazi Altaf Hossain of Pabna was a Diploma Engineer and had been working as an asphalt plant operator at Samwhan Corporation, a South Korean construction firm.

A gang of Afghan criminals attacked a camp of the company near Mazar-i-Sharif on Friday killing Altaf on the spot.

Nine construction workers managed the escape the attack while seven were taken hostage by the myrmidons.

A foreign ministry blurb yesterday said seventeen Bangladeshi workers had been working for the Korean company since 2004. They were later moved to work in Afghanistan.

Diplomatic sources said, Bangladesh has formally requested Afghanistan to help free the hostages and bring back the body of the dear departed.

His body was brought to Kabul from Mazar-i-Sharif town, the scene of the crime, said officials of the Korean company in Dhaka.

The company has already requested the Afgan government to take initiatives to free the Bangladeshi hostages.

The ministry blurb said the ministry contacted the company's Kabul office, and is constantly monitoring the situation.

Besides, the foreign ministry has directed the Bangladesh embassy in Uzbekistan to take necessary steps to rescue the victims and bring back the body of the slain Bangladeshi.

Darfur clashes forces 12,000 to flee
[Iran Press TV] Media reports from Khartoum say renewed fighting between the Sudanese army and anti-government fighters has forced at least 12,000 people to flee their homes.

"The Mission has noticed that approximately 12,000 people decamped the area and are moving towards Shangil Tobaya and Zam Zam internally displaced persons camp, near El Fasher, North Darfur," said Darfur's UNAMID peacekeepers in a statement on Sunday, Rooters reported.

According to the statement, Sudan's army has clashed with fighters in the South Darfur village of Khor Abeche at least three times this month.

Sudanese are heading towards already overcrowded camps and settlements in the strife-torn territory, the report added.

The fighting in the Darfur region originally broke out in 2003 when elements opposed to the government in Khartoum launched an armed struggle for more autonomy.

Violence escalated and festivities broke out over the past week in the aftermath of The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) decision in May to suspend participation in peace talks held in the Qatari capital, Doha, after a framework accord they signed with the government encountered problems earlier this year.

Former rebels of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement have offered to mediate between the government and hard boyz from JEM and the Sudan Liberation Army faction, which is also boycotting peace talks.

Nigeria militants attack oil pipelines
[Iran Press TV] A bad boy group in Nigeria has grabbed credit for bomb attacks on three pipelines operated by US and Italian companies in the country's oil-producing Niger Delta.

The bad boy group Niger Delta Liberation Front (NDLF) said in a Saturday email statement that it had destroyed pipelines operated by US energy firm Chevron and Italian oil company Agip in the key oil producing state of Delta on Friday.

"NDLF has carried out bombings of three oil flow stations in Delta State to draw government attention to the plight of the suffering people of Ayakoromor and environs," the statement said.

The group also said Friday's bombing would serve as "a warning signal to a massive bombing."

"This is not a mere threat as NDLF has planted bombs across major oil locations within the creeks and the sea ... ready for detonation," it said, warning that its attacks would even affect vessels sailing within Nigeria's waters in the Atlantic Ocean.

Neither the two oil producers, nor Nigerian security forces have commented on the attack yet.

The bad boy group has imposed heavy losses on Nigeria's oil industry through various attacks in the past.

Niger Delta Liberation group wants foreign oil companies to leave the country and says the country's oil income should be shared with the poor people of the region.

Americans who Escaped Vehicle Attack were CIA Agents
[Yemen Post] An American official confirmed that the four American employees who beat feet an attack on their vehicle in Sana'a last week worked for the CIA. ''None of the four agents were maimed'', he said.

The official spoke to News Agency that Dare Not be Named on the condition of anonymity because details about the incident remain a secret. "There is no indication that the perpetrators knew specifically who they were targeting, he added.

The U.S. embassy in Sana'a previously put out a statement on its website that "foreign residents... were targeted for attacks", but did not give further details.

Late last week, the American embassy issued a statement urging its citizens to be cautious and avoid being seen near the area where the last attack took place.

Analysts believe the United States hurt itself by announcing that the attacked were CIA agents, therefore, making Yemenis believe that most westerns who walk in the streets are suspected to be foreign agents.

Twelve people suspected of plotting a terror attack have been arrested after police carried out raids overnight.
And Merry Christmas to you, too, you vicious bastards...
The suspects were picked up in South Wales, the Midlands and London.

It is understood that the plans for the alleged attacks were at an advanced stage.

Five of the suspects are from Cardiff, four from Stoke and three from London.

They age from 17 to 28 and were picked up by unarmed officers at around 5am today.

'The operation is in its early stages so we are unable to go into detail at this time about the suspected offences.

'However, I believe it was necessary at this time to take action in order to ensure public safety.

All of the suspects are men. Most were picked up in or near the homes.

Police are still searching the premises this morning.

The suspects will be held at police stations in London, the North West and the West Midlands.

Police said the raids were 'large-scale, pre-planned and intelligence-led.'

#4  I gather that Scotland used to have a large prison hewn from live rock. It had running water before it was fashionable, percolating through the rock, and for sewers, a deep, if narrow hole, that went down.

Prisoners were served a ration of a bowl of oatmeal a day. It could get somewhat chilly in winter.

Pity that they no longer have such accommodations.

5 Colombian troops killed in minefield
[Iran Press TV] Five Colombian soldiers have been killed and two others injured after stepping into a minefield in southern part of the capital city Bogota.

The troops were on duty with the Army's Ninth Brigade on patrol in the town of Puerto Rico, 650 kilometers (404 miles) south of the capital in a rural area of Caqueta department on Saturday, AFP reported, quoting a military official.

Authorities blame the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) for planting the mines.

The FARC is Latin America's oldest and largest rebel group that has been battling the Colombian government for 45 years.

The rebel group has killed more than 60 Colombian troops since August despite the government's appointment of a security advisor to counter the wave of deadly attacks.

There are currently about 8,000 FARC rebels, according to official estimates.

Pipeline blast kills 22 in Mexico
[Iran Press TV] A massive blast on a pipeline operated by Mexico's state-owned oil company has killed 22 people, injuring 32 others in the central state of Puebla.

The pre-dawn kaboom happened along the Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) pipeline in the town of Texmelucan, where thieves were trying to steal fuel, Puebla state secretary Valentin Meneses reported.

According to Meneses some 83 homes were partially damaged and 32 were completely destroyed in the Sunday's blast.

"A criminal gang punctured the pipeline of state-owned Pemex, which spilled fuel out of control because of the high degree of pressure. The streets began to flood, then came a spark and we saw rivers of fire in the streets," AFP quoted Meneses as saying.

Spokesman of the state Noe Torres said the initial kaboom was followed by four minor blasts prompting hundreds of people to flee the city, located 55 miles east of Mexico City.

Turkey finds explosives in Istanbul
[Iran Press TV] A map, found as part of a probe into alleged "blackmail and military espionage," has led Turkish Sherlocks to a cache of bombs and ammunitions in Istanbul.

Using the sketch, the Sherlocks unearthed 30 pieces of plastic explosives and 900 bullets in a suburb in the northwestern city, Anatolia news agency reported on Sunday.

The digging process could lead to further finds.

Last year, researchers found hand grenades, light anti-tank weapons and explosives in the suburban area, AFP said. The discovery was followed by the indictment of 16 people, mostly Navy officers, for joining in on a plot to damage the reputation of and oust the ruling authorities.

On Thursday, Ankara began the trial of 196 retired and serving military officers who had been accused of plotting to topple the Turkish government seven years ago.

The suspects could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of attempting to overthrow Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party or preventing it from carrying out its duties.

Iraqi army finds mass grave in Mosul
[Emirates 24/7] The Iraqi army on Sunday found a mass grave in the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul that contained the bodies of 11 people thought to have been killed in 2005, police said.

Captain Ali Khodr of the local police said the grave was found in the Intissar district of the city 350 kilometres (220 miles) north of Storied Baghdad.

In 2005 gun-hung tough guys controlled a large part of the city, and coppers, soldiers and people suspected of working with the US forces were targeted for murder on a daily basis.

I happened to be in a class at Ft. Bragg in 1970 which included a field-grade who'd been involved in digging up that mass grave outside Hue. The question was what to do if our RVN counterparts began mistreating a VC prisoner. His response was not met with the standard, "Well, that's a technique, but the school solution is...." In fact, the instructors didn't like it at all. Or, more likely, they couldn't admit they did.
You will be shocked, I know, to find that no sillyvilian has ever heard of it, and no liberal, having been informed, gives a rodent's butt about it. Unlike My Lai, Hue does not exemplify anything.

Palestinian faction launches another attack on Israeli military sites
(KUNA) -- Al-Nasser Saladin Brigades, the military wing of the Paleostine Popular Resistance Committees (PPRC), on Sunday grabbed credit for yet another shelling at two Israeli military sites near borders of the Gazoo Strip.

Earlier tonight, the Brigades, in a statement, grabbed credit for Karm Abu Salem's tanks hanger operation, whereas the Israeli army said a mortar shell landed and went kaboom! in Ashkol town, with no casualties or damages reported. No Paleostinian faction grabbed credit to the attack as of yet.

Israeli police finds body of missing tourist
(KUNA) -- Israeli police found on Sunday morning the body of Christine Logan, an American tourist, who was stabbed to death by unknown assailants near Jerusalem, Israeli Radio said.

Logan went missing on Saturday in the archeological village of Moshav Mota, south-west of Jerusalem, before the Israeli police launched a search team on Sunday to find her, it noted.

It further added that police inspectors are currently examining the body and investigating the circumstances of the incident and whether the victim was tortured by her perpetrators.

On Saturday night, the Israeli police and security forces launched a massive manhunt supervised by the Israel Police Inspector-General, Dudi Cohen, to find the missing tourist.

The search and investigation operations, which lasted till late on Saturday, were conducted after Kaye Susan Wilson, Logan's friend, reported to the police that she and Logan were attacked by Arab men.

Wilson, a tour guide, was able to escape her attackers even though she was seriously stabbed but Logan failed to escape the scene.

The radio pointed out that security forces are currently undertaking intensive investigations to clarify the nature surrounding this incident.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran commission votes to cut UK ties
[Iran Press TV] The National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) has decided to sever all ties with the United Kingdom.

A member of the commission Mohammad Karami-Rad told Press TV on Sunday that politicians had voted after hours of deliberation to fully cut ties with Britain.

"Members of the commission brought up very important and serious issues [in their Sunday meeting] regarding a single-urgency motion to sever ties with Britain," said the parliamentarian.

"The commissioners also condemned recent remarks by the British ambassador to Tehran (Simon Gass) and reviewed the British government's other hostile acts throughout history against our country," said the politician.

He said the motion will be put to a final vote by all politicians before it is approved.

Iran has considered breaking off relations with Britain several times because of London's meddlesome and undiplomatic approach vis-à-vis Tehran.

A recent case of London's double standards regarding Iran was the remarks made by the British ambassador to Tehran who, in a web posting, accused Iran of violating human rights.
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...

"Today, International Human Rights Day is highlighting the cases of those people around the world who stand up for the rights of others -- the lawyers, journalists and NGO workers who place themselves at risk to defend their countrymen. Nowhere are they under greater threat than in Iran," claimed the British diplomat in questionable comments posted on the website of the British Embassy in Tehran on December 9.

"Since last year human rights defenders have been harassed and imprisoned," he added.

Gass' brazen remarks came at a time when the British government was brutally cracking down on student protests in the UK.

The students, who were simply expressing their objection to tuition fee hikes, had been severely assaulted and jugged by the British police.

A senior Iranian politician also implicated Britain in two terror attacks in the port city of Chabahar in southeastern Iran last Wednesday which left at least 38 people killed and around 90 maimed.

"Past experience has proven that the US and UK intelligence services are behind crimes such as the Wednesday morning crime in Chabahar," Chairman of the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said.

The mourners were commemorating the anniversary of the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Hussein (PTUI!).

Back in May, Iranian parliamentary front man Kazem Jalali accused Britain of instigating Iranophobia and denounced London's meddling in the issue of the three Persian Gulf islands of Lesser Tunb, Greater Tunb and Abu Musa.
