Anti-terror police swoop boosts security in Coast
[The Nation (Nairobi)] Officers from the Anti-terrorism Police Unit made impromptu raids in Mombasa and its environs over the weekend.

On Christmas Eve, the anti-terror officers carried out a swoop at the Likoni crossing channel, and for two hours, subjected motorists and commuters to thorough inspection before they boarded the ferries.

According to a Kenya Ferry Services official, the police used sniffer dogs to check vehicles boots, commuters' bags and cargo on trucks.

To avoid a traffic snarl-up, the KFS managing director Musa Hassan Musa released four ferries to boost operations on Christmas Day.

"We are happy with the intensified security operations. This has boosted public confidence on our services," he said.

Security agents on high alert were conspicuous at the Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach and on Mama Ngina Drive. Mama Ngina Public beach recorded the highest number of visitors.

The coppers had a difficult time controlling the huge crowd that turned up to celebrate their Christmas holidays at the beach.

But the presence of the officers kept criminals at bay as no incidents were reported.

Every year, thousands of domestic and foreign tourists jam the coastal beaches and resorts for the December holiday season.

Hotels in the region, this year, have recorded a high number of guests and lauded the intensified security.

In other security news, the siege by ANP troops against forces of Evil holed up in an abandoned house in Dellys continued into a third day, Liberte reported Monday. To prevent civilian casualties, roads in the area were closed to traffic. One soldier has been killed and five others injured since the start of the operation.

Morocco: arrest of six Moroccans suspected of planning attacks
[Ennahar] The Moroccan authorities have announced Monday they had recently jugged six Moroccans suspected of intending to commit terrorist attacks, after having trained on websites.

"The member of this network have acquired considerable experience in the manufacture of explosives" via the Internet and they were planning to "carry out acts of sabotage (...) through car booms" in particular, according to a statement from the Moroccan Interior Ministry on Monday.

The six "terrorists" were targeting "certain foreign interests in the kingdom, and several establishments and vital national security posts," the statement said.

Authorities did not specify the exact date of these arrests, but according to a Moroccan official who requested anonymity, they took place around December 10 in Oujda and Nador (north-eastern Morocco) and Casablanca.

According to the Moroccan Ministry, the six defendants will be brought to justice soon as the investigation, "supervised by the competent Public Prosecutor", will be completed.

South African police find weapons bound for Somalia pirate hunters
Please note for future reference: the article from the Jerusalem Post, but written by Ay Pee. So we don't carry the text, regardless of the web source. Summary with Besoeker's in-lines, below.

Apparently an anti-piracy force is being trained in Somalia. South African police raided a house near Durban and seized guns meant for the controversial program.
"Controversial program" only if you are an Soviet or Cuban trained ANC politician who failed to get his cut of the contract.
According to the police, four people were arrested, two of them foreigners.
Thank you SAPS for your continued support of the GWOT. We always know you will come through when the chips are down.

#1  Remember this, South Africa is owned by the ANC and is heading down the same road as Zimbabwe. The ANC was just smarter than Mugabe and is slowly turning up the heat in the pot, so that the Afrikaaner and English frogs don't jump out, but get cooked instead. If all of the Afrikaaners and English bail on South Africa, its economy grinds to a halt and it is unable to feed itself.

#2  Apparently an anti-piracy force is being trained in Somalia.

The latest anti-piracy training contractor (Saracen) is based in Lebanon, but some of its senior executives are former SADF. It'd be logical then to assume that some, if not most, of the trainers are former SADF and SAP as well.

Apparently the ANC is still quite nervous about coup attempts.

Bangladesh
JMB men lived there in guise of rickshawpullers
[Bangla Daily Star] A group of JMB hard boyz disguised as rickshaw pullers and day labourers were residing in two secret dens near Hathazari Police Station to recruit and train members for the banned outfit.

Shamim Hossain, 22, a JMB member jugged from one of the hideouts on Sunday evening, told this to police and news hounds yesterday.

Shamim and ten other hard boys, including Hathazari unit JMB commander Masum, used to reside in three rooms on the ground floor of a three-storey building in Alipur Hospital Gate area.

The building is only half a kilometre off the cop shoppe.

The rest of the hard boyz managed to escape the arrest. While fleeing, Masum hurled an explosive at police. None of the law enforcers was injured.

The hard boyz also left five bombs with high kaboom capacity in the yard.

Hathazari police kept the area cordoned since Sunday night. A six-member team of Bomb Disposal Unit from Chittagong Metropolitan Police reached there yesterday morning and defused all the explosives by 4:40pm.

Police recovered jihadi books and an instructional manual meant for the outfit members. Police said the manual is about selecting suitable hideouts, maintaining members' profiles, and other safety measures.

Md Shafiullah, owner of the Alipur building, was yet to be quizzed.

After a tip-off from Shamim, police busted another hideout in nearby Patika area where two hard boyz had been living in the guise of rickshaw pullers. None of them was held.

Shamim hails from Lalmonirhat and most of his associates are from North Bengal.

He was convicted with seven years' imprisonment in a case filed under Anti-Terrorism Ordinance in Nilphamari on December 4, 2008.

A court sentenced him on November 11 this year, said Hathazari police.

While talking to The Daily Star yesterday Shamim said he had joined Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) four years back and remained absconded since filing of the case. He moved around a lot.

Shamim said he had been working as a mason in Noakhali before Masum brought him to Hathazari two months back.

He started living in Alipur as a rickshaw puller. The other JMB members, including Masum, disguised as day labourers.

Shamim claimed to be an ordinary member of the outfit and Masum was their chief trainer.

According to police, in Patika, hard boy Mosharraf Hossain alias Saju was living with his family for years in a two-room tin-roofed house rented from an expatriate named Osman.

Osman could not be contacted immediately.

Monoar Hossain, another hard boy, started living in the room next to Saju's several months ago.

Saju's national identity card mentions him as a dweller of Hathazari.

Quoting Shamim, Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad of Hathazari Police Station, said the hard boyz kept the bombs in the den in order to flee by exploding those in case of any police raid.

A case under Anti-Terrorist Ordinance has been filed against Shamim and 12 others, following Shamim's arrest.

Britain
UK court holds 9 on terror conspiracy plot
[Arab News] Nine terror suspects allegedly plotting large-scale attacks against British cities and landmarks were charged Monday and jugged until their next court appearance in January.
Don't no one tell Mr. Clapper, okay?
The men were among a dozen jugged last week in London, Cardiff and Stoke-on-Trent in central England. Three were subsequently released without being charged and five of the original 12 were of Bangladeshi origin.

The arrests, in the largest British anti-terror raid in two years, came at a time of heightened anxiety about a variety of terror plots in Europe. If the conspiracy turns out to be true, it would also be the latest in a series of major homegrown plots in Britain in the past five years.

Police have not released specific details, but security officials said the nine suspects were planning substantial attacks in Britain.

The suspects were expected to be back in court Jan. 14 on a variety of terror-related charges including conspiracy to cause kabooms.

Since the 2005 suicide kaboom attacks on London's transportation network that killed 52 commuters, there have been a number of other alleged terror plots in Britain.

In April 2009, 12 men were nabbed over an alleged Al-Qaeda bomb plot in the northern city of Manchester. All were subsequently released without charge and ordered to leave Britain. One of them, Abid Naseer, was later re-jugged at the request of the US, which says he was involved a plot to bomb the New York City subway. He is in jail awaiting extradition.

In 2006, US and British intelligence officials thwarted one of the largest plots yet, a plan to explode nearly a dozen trans-Atlantic airliners.

The nine men in the latest alleged plot are: Gurukanth Desai, 28, Omar Sharif Latif, 26, and Abdul Malik Miah, 24, from Cardiff, Mohammed Moksudur Rahman Chowdhury, 20, and Shah Mohammed Lutfar Rahman, 28, from London, and Nazam Hussain, 25, Usman Khan, 19, Mohibur Rahman, 26, and Abul Bosher Mohammed Shahjahan, 26, from Stoke-on-Trent.

The decision to charge them was announced early Monday.

"I have today advised the police that nine men should be charged with conspiracy to cause kabooms and with engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism with the intention of either committing acts of terrorism or assisting another to commit such acts," anti-terror prosecutor Sue Hemming said.

Police said the conspiracy started Oct. 1 and continued until Dec. 20, the day of the arrests.

The men are also accused of preparing for acts of terrorism, downloading and researching materials and methods for acts of terrorism, and carrying out reconnaissance missions and testing incendiary material.

15 More Drone-zapped in North Wazoo
MIRANSHAH: A barrage of US missile strikes killed at least 15 suspected militants in North Waziristan on Tuesday, obliterating compounds and vehicles used by fighters, officials said.

Pakistani security officials said the first strike destroyed two compounds and killed five rebels in Ghulam Khan village, 20 kilometres (13 miles) east of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan.
No immediate wailing about invading their sovereignty ... must be hitting targets both we and Pakistan want hit. Means good intel (which certainly doesn't mean ISI), so either we have some sneaky people down on the ground or our sky eyes have stepped up yet another notch in ability.
Prob'ly both. There are the unseen Afghan Special Forces and our own quietly roaming the neighborhood, or so it's said.
They said further strikes carried out by unmanned aircraft killed 10 suspected militants minutes apart in Nawab village on the border with Afghanistan.

"At least 10 people were killed when US drones fired missiles at three vehicles," a senior security official told AFP.
Not what I'd call a reliable source, but....
"First a US drone fired missiles at a double-cabin pick-up truck and about 15 minutes later two more cars were struck," he said.
The other two vehicles were rushing to aid the 'people' in the truck? Or just scavengers looking for some quick salvage? Seen this 'jab-cross' pattern from the drones several times recently.
Security and intelligence officials in Miranshah and Peshawar confirmed the strikes and the death toll.

Mustafa managed to escape from the place of incident, but was again targeted in 11-G area along with another SSP activist Yaqoob. Both were maimed seriously and were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Mustafa pegged out.

After the death of both activists, a heavy exchange of firing was reported from New Bloody Karachi in which two ST workers were maimed. They were identified as Zubair, son of Shabbir, and Waqas, son of Hanif. Tension prevailed in New Bloody Karachi after the incident and all shops and market were closed due to the uncertain condition.

PHC grants bail to two Taliban
[Pak Daily Times] The Beautiful Downtown Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday granted bail to two Taliban, accused of attacking the Mingora cop shoppe and security forces.

A single bench, headed by Justice Syed Sajjad Hassan Shah, granted bail to Khairul Rehman alias Nanai and Momin and directed them to furnish two sureties of Rs 500,000 each.

The counsel for the petitioners, Luqman and Muhammad Ali, submitted that Mingora Station House Officer (SHO) Johar Rehman on May 10, 2009 charged the two along with Tehreek-e-Taliban Swat chief Fazlullah, front man Mohammedan Khan and 16 others for attacking the cop shoppe and injuring four military personnel.

They stated that the prosecution had failed to present even a single eyewitness and produce solid proves against the accused. They also said that the petitioners were jugged on October 14 and did not confess to their crime during their physical remand.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
Additional Advocate General Barrister Waqar and the state counsel also admitted that there were no solid proof against the accused, but they appealed to the bench to release them on heavy bail bonds.

Luqman, the counsel for the petitioner, told Daily Times that 20 Taliban were charged in the case, including Fazlullah, Mohammedan Khan and others.

The counsel said only the petitioners were jugged in the case as majority of the accused in the case were killed during festivities with the security forces. Earlier, a single bench comprising Justice Ziaur Rehman had observed that investigation by police often resulted in release of the suspects. "Had the police conducted proper investigation in these cases, the suspected snuffies would have been convicted by the courts," he observed.

Taliban kidnap 23 tribesmen for meeting Kayani
[Pak Daily Times] The Pak Taliban defied an ongoing military offensive and kidnapped 23 rustics who had met with army chief General Ashfaq Kayani during a recent trip to the area, intelligence officials, tribal elders and the terrorists' front man said.

Intelligence officials and a local government official said 23 elders from the district of South Wazoo were summoned by the Taliban to Razmak, a town in North Wazoo, on December 17 and have not returned. "Our reports say that they had been nabbed by Taliban," a tribal administration official said. The kidnappings further threaten the government's shaky effort to convince hundreds of thousands of displaced members of the Mehsud tribe that the Taliban are defeated and that it is safe to return to their homes in South Wazoo. Taliban courts in South Wazoo are deciding how to punish the men and boys being held, and should have a "verdict" within days, Pak Taliban front man Azam Tariq told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

"This is a warning to the tribal people to not come to the area because we are still present in South Wazoo," Tariq said via phone. He claimed that seven Taliban courts were functioning in South Wazoo, as well as 22 offices. "On one side, the government says peace is established in South Wazoo, and on the other our rustics are being kidnapped," said Maulana Esamuddin Mehsud, one of two Mehsud tribal leaders who said they learned of the kidnappings from the victims' relatives. The 23, who include several students, were among those who attended functions with General Kayani in the Ladha and Makeen areas of South Wazoo on December 7.

The circumstances surrounding the capture of the 23 were murky. According to local intelligence officials, the hard boyz lured the victims to a town on the border of South and North Wazoo, with promises of food rations. They then grabbed the unsuspecting rustics. Those kidnapped hailed from different families in various parts of South Wazoo and are believed to have stayed in South Wazoo or in North Wazoo throughout the fighting. All are part of the Mehsud tribe.

Iraq
Deadly suicide bombings rock Iraq’s Ramadi
Twin suicide bombings rocked a government compound in Iraq’s western city Ramadi on Monday, with a police source saying more than 17 people had been killed.

Details of the attack, the second on the compound this month, were still sketchy, with some confusion surrounding the number of those killed and injured.

“The death toll has risen to 17, most of them police officers, and 47 people have been wounded,” said a police official at the site of the attack, speaking on condition of anonymity. He said the blasts were caused by two successive vehicle bombs, and rescue operations were still under way.

Anbar Governor Qassim Mohammed said the attacks killed seven and wounded 28. He said the first blast happened when a minibus exploded outside the compound. The second blast was caused by a suicide bomber on foot, disguised as a policeman.

The compound houses the provincial council as well as the police headquarters for Anbar province.
