#3  If you get a chance, you should see Ms Helm in "Metropolis"; a 1927 B&W film. Predates "1984" and was just re-mastered in 2010. Even though it is silent, it is very powerful and captures very forcefully what happens when rulers think they are god and when the masses are led by charismatic and unthinking leaders.

#5  Reagan was third of Wyman's four marriages

In 1938, Wyman co-starred with Ronald Reagan in Brother Rat (1938), and its sequel Brother Rat and a Baby (1940). They were engaged at the Chicago Theatre, and married on January 24, 1940, at the Wee Kirk o' the Heather church in Glendale, California. She and Reagan had three children; Maureen Elizabeth Reagan (1941–2001), the adopted son Michael Edward Reagan (born March 18, 1945), and Christine Reagan (born prematurely on June 26, 1947 and died the next day). She filed for divorce in 1948; the divorce was finalized in 1949. Since Ronald Reagan is the only U.S. president to have been divorced, Wyman was the only ex-wife of an American President.

Though she remained silent during Reagan's political career, she told a newspaper interviewer in 1968 that this was not because she was:
“bitter or because I don't agree with him politically. I've always been a registered Republican. But it's bad taste to talk about ex-husbands and ex-wives, that's all. Also, I don't know a damn thing about politics.”

A few days after Reagan died on June 5, 2004, Wyman broke her silence:
“America has lost a great president and a great, kind, and gentle man.”

Afghanistan
Afghan Police Killed in Kabul Bomb Blast
[Tolo News] At least one policeman was killed and two civilians and a policeman were maimed in a kaboom Tuesday morning in Kabul, officials said.

The incident happened at 08:00 local time in the morning near a police check post, according to reports.

"I saw one policeman who was seriously maimed," an eyewitness told TOLOnews.

The maimed were rushed to a nearby hospital in the city.

No groups including the Taliban have taken responsibility for the incident.

The attack comes as last month two jacket wallahs attacked a National Army bus in Kabul, killing five and wounding nine.

Violence in 2010 left 1292 coppers dead and 2447 other police forces maimed, Afghan Ministry of Interior Affairs has said.

Darfur Rebel Group Agrees to Deal with Khartoum
[An Nahar] A Darfur alliance of rebel splinter factions said on Monday that it has agreed to sign a final peace settlement with the Sudanese government.

The Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) "confirms that negotiations have come to an end and the movement is awaiting the final peace document," its leader Al-Tijani al-Sisi told news hounds in the Qatari capital.

The group, in a statement, said it had "received the mediators' reply over disputed issues on December 30" and "decided to accept" the proposals ahead of "a complete and final agreement to be signed" by all sides.

It did not give any details.

Last Thursday, the Sudanese government's special adviser on Darfur, Ghazi Salaheddine, said Khartoum had recalled its delegation from Qatar but without withdrawing from the negotiations.

The Khartoum government has for several months been trying to secure a comprehensive peace agreement with all rebel groups in the Darfur region of western Sudan.

The LJM was expected to finalize a peace deal with Khartoum in mid-December after agreeing a ceasefire last March, but the accord has yet to be signed.

Darfur has been gripped by a civil war since 2003 that has claimed 300,000 lives and displaced 2.7 million people, according to U.N. figures. Khartoum says 10,000 people have died in the conflict.

Egypt reinforces security in anticipation of Coptic Christmas
[Ennahar] The Egyptian security forces were on heightened alert in the vicinity of churches for the celebrations of the Coptic Orthodox Christmas on Thursday and Friday after the attack that killed 21 people in Alexandria New Year's night

The police presence at checkpoints before the religious buildings have been strengthened, said Monday sources within the security services.

Monitoring ports and airports has also been strengthened after the bombing, according to officials who evoke the trail of Al Qaeda, a jacket wallah acting for foreign terrorists. The massacre has not been formally claimed.

The Orthodox Coptic Patriarch Shenouda III has assured that he intended to celebrate Christmas mass. "Do not pray would mean that terrorism is depriving us of the celebration of the birth of Christ," he said, quoted by the daily al-Ahram.

Shenouda III has also launched an appeal for calm to the faithful. "I call our sons to calm as calm can solve all problems," he said in a television interview whose content was also distributed by the official news agency MENA.

The patriarch expressed regret over some aspects of the protests against the bombing of Alexandria.

"The slogans used by some have transgressed all values (...) and some have attempted to use violence, while violence is absolutely not our approach," said Shenouda III, involving in these outbursts persons not belonging to the Coptic community, he has not identified.

In the same interview, the patriarch called on the Egyptian government to take into account the demands of the Copts, who experience violence and complain of discrimination, as required by law to obtain presidential approval to build churches.
"If he considers that a law adversely affects some, the state must correct the law or make another," he said.

Coptic Orthodox Christmas on Friday, also day of prayer for Mohammedans. The celebrations will start on Thursday.

Besides the risk of attacks, the authorities fear further festivities with Christian demonstrators, or festivities between Christians and Mohammedans.

#1  The Copts need some security advice. For example, while it is good to have state security, it should only be the outer ring. The inner ring has to be all Copt. Likewise, vehicle barriers are very easy to fabricate.

Typically, such attacks are of three types. Either an individual with a suicide belt; or a group with belts, rifles and grenades; or a car bomb. So that is what you plan for.

They should have long since petitioned the government to permit them to have an armed security militia, even if that militia is only permitted in the vicinity of their churches. As well as a firm rule that the police cannot confiscate the militia's weapons before or during such a mass gathering.

More than anything else, they have to have constant push on the government for anything they can get. They cannot rely on the government or police to do anything for them, so they need government to at least get out of the way. (Sounds familiar)

Arabia
Navy frigate saves tanker from pirates
AN Australian navy frigate has thwarted a pirate attack on a UK-flagged chemical tanker in the Arabian Sea.

The guided-missile frigate HMAS Melbourne steamed to the aid of the tanker CPO China after it was boarded by pirates on Monday night Australian time, the Defence Department said.

HMAS Melbourne was more than 260km away when alerted to the incident but covered the distance in a little over six hours.

While en route its helicopter raced ahead to the CPO China and "was able to deter the pirates from attempting to take control of the ship".

"As a result the pirates aborted the attack and left the vessel when Melbourne arrived on the scene," Defence said today.

Earlier, the tanker's crew had locked themselves into a stronghold from where they could maintain control of the ship.

The crew also remained in satellite communications with the outside world after the pirates boarded.

#4  waste of money chasing them around on the high seas. Solution is simple and cheap: give Dr Farole in Puntland the funds to jug them. He's got hundreds sitting in the Puntland prisons already.

But the UN won't recognise Puntland as a separate state and doesn't like anybody aiding them directly in case that enables the splitting of Somalia (Somaliland also wants to split)

Hence we have the farce of the world's navies steaming up and down the GOA as glorified, super-expensive highway cops.

And super expensive shipping insurance

Dr Farole's entire state budget in 2008? $15 million. Doesn't go far in Africa... smaller than some of the ransoms paid.

His presence is probably all that kept them from being completely overrun in the first place, Frank. Once he's dead, they'll have no hostage for even bad behaviour. So best to wait until relief has arrived and a meal eaten before killing him.

#1  Update from AFP:

Guatemalan security forces have arrested a 19-year-old female gang member suspected of placing a bomb on a city bus which killed seven people and wounded 15 others.

Police and Public Ministry agents who captured her on Tuesday said they had been unable to firmly establish the identity of the suspect, in part because she has identified herself to authorities using at least two different names.

Authorities picked up the young woman, who they said goes by the alias "La Paquetona," in a series of searches after the blast, which ripped through a packed public bus in Guatemala City late Monday.

Tattoos on the suspect identify her as a member of "a large criminal gang," Attorney General Claudia Paz y Paz said late Tuesday.

Criminal gangs would be the obvious suspects as bus drivers paid 1.5 million dollars in extortion money in 2010.

Bus guild president Gamaliel Chin said Tuesday the bus system received four anonymous phone calls last month threatening an attack.

Guatemala bus blast kills four
[Emirates 24/7] A kaboom rocked a city bus just outside Guatemala's capital Monday, killing at least four people and injuring another eight, authorities said.

"We are still investigating whether it is an attack or not, but we need the technical report to determine that," Interior Minister Carlos Menocal told AFP.

Some eyewitnesses told local media there appeared to have been an electrical short circuit. But some police sources said it may have been an attack.

Explosives experts were investigating, officials said.

Guatemalan bus drivers paid 1.5 million dollars in extortion money to organized crime rings in 2010, according to a police report released Monday.

Public transport workers appear to be at particular risk. Human rights groups said that between January and November, 119 drivers and 51 transport aides were rubbed out.

Europe
Dutch search for explosives in train from Germany
[Emirates 24/7] Dutch police early Tuesday were searching for explosives on a passenger train from Germany to Amsterdam that was halted and evacuated in Barneveld, central Netherlands, local authorities announced.

The police halted the train after German authorities said a female passenger on the train had indicated "suspicious behaviour" by another passenger, Dutch news agency ANP reported, quoting a police front man.

Daphne van Hagen, a spokeswoman for Barneveld council, told AFP: "A team of police specialised in explosives is checking whether there are explosives on the train."

Some 300 passengers had been evacuated and transferred onto buses while people living on nearby farms had also been evacuated, Van Hagen said.

ANP said the suspect passenger on the train from Frankfurt had got off before the evacuation process.

Dutch police were not immediately available to confirm the reports or to give further details.

Clash in Mohmand; 39 suspected militants detained
[Dawn] Militants attacked a checkpoint Tuesday in northwest Pakistain's Mohmand tribal region, triggering a shootout and prompting security forces to round up 39 suspected bully boys, a local official said.

The clash occurred in the Bhai Corr area of Mohmand, a tribal area where the Pak military has fought Talibs.

Several recent attacks in Mohmand -- including pitched battles involving some 150 gun-hung tough guys attacking five security posts -- have shown the bully boys' tenacity despite the security operations.

Government administrator Rasool Khan said no soldiers were maimed in Tuesday's fighting but did not give any details on potential turban casualties. A search operation launched in the attack's aftermath netted 39 suspected gun-hung tough guys from nearby areas, he said.

Information from Pakistain's tribal regions is difficult to verify independently. The tribal belt is a dangerous territory, and access is restricted.

The army occasionally launches crackdowns in the tribal areas and other parts of Pakistain, taking into custody numerous young men deemed turban suspects. Some are later freed, but many end up being held for lengthy periods of time without trial or proof of their involvement in turban activity.

Protests erupt after Taseer assassination
[Dawn] Dozens of supporters of the Pakistain People's Party (PPP) took to streets in Lahore on Tuesday, burning tyres and blocking traffic in protest at the murder of Punjab's governor, witnesses said.

The protests broke out in the eastern city, the capital of Punjab province and the home town of governor Salman Taseer, who was assassinated in Islamabad in an attack officials said was carried out by one of his bodyguards.

PPP workers rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud in support of the party, burned tyres and blocked traffic on the main Mall Road, witnesses said.

Shops were closed in most parts of the city, where people descended on Taseer's residence to mourn his death.

PPP provincial minister Raja Riaz said the governor's body would be brought to Lahore after a post mortem late Tuesday and that a time for his funeral would be announced on Wednesday.

Pakistan bus bomb targets children
[Al Jazeera] A remote controlled bomb has destroyed a bus carrying children of paramilitary soldiers in southwest Pakistain, according to police.

In Tuesday's attack, fifteen children, aged eight to 12 years, were maimed but most of them were discharged after receiving first aid at a hospital.

However,
The infamous However...
five of them were critically injured.

Abdul Latif, area police chief said that the attack occurred in Turbat, 435 miles (700 kilometres) from Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province.

According to police sources, the van carrying at least 30 kids, was attacked near Ata Shad Degree College.

Gunshots rang up following the attack, Pakistain's Geo News reported.

The bus was being escorted by two other military vehicles but neither of these were hit. Security personnel put a cordon around the entire blast site.

No one has grabbed credit for the attack.

Baluch nationalist groups are active in Turbat. They have been part of a low-level insurgency that seeks more autonomy for Baluchistan province and a greater share of the money from its natural resources.

[Arab News] The Asia 1, an aid convoy that left India at the beginning of December and is backed by southeast Asian countries, entered the Gazoo Strip through the Rafah border crossing early Monday morning.

Of the 160 activists traveling with the convoy, 112 were allowed into the Gazoo Strip. They were from India, Japan, Indonesia, Pakistain, Malaysia, New Zealand and Kuwait. Feroz Mesberola, Indian organizer of the convoy, said the Egyptian authorities at the border point prevented a number of Iranian and Jordanian activists from entering.

The organizers said members in the convoy came from different places and religious backgrounds to prove that there is a global consensus on the need to lift the blockade imposed on the Gazoo Strip.

The activists, who were warmly received at the Paleostinian side of the border crossing, carried 300 tons of medical and food supplies.

The convoy was organized in part by the Turkish Foundation of Humanitarian Relief (IHH), which put together a previous ill-fated attempt to break the Israeli blockade on Gazoo with a naval aid convoy in May 2010.

Israeli commandos thwarted that effort and killed nine Turks on board one of the vessels in the aid flotilla. Facing international condemnation, Israel later relaxed the blockade and eased some restrictions on imports and exports from the coastal enclave.

Israel imposed the blockade on Gazoo after Paleostinians captured one of its soldiers, Gilad Shalit, in June 2006. The embargo was reinforced in 2007 after Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, seized control of the coastal enclave, a year after it won legislative elections, following deadly fighting with Fatah.

In another development, an Israeli ground force backed by warplanes made a brief incursion Monday into Gazoo Strip, east of Khan Younis. Witnesses said Israeli troops advanced to the outskirts of Khuza village. Bulldozers accompanying the force razed farmland while the troops fired intensively at neighboring houses.

No one was injured in the firing but students of a local school decamped their classes.

Al-Nasser Brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, said in a statement that their fighters confronted the invading troops and fired a mortar shell at them.

Two Suspects Held in Grenade Attack on Faisal Karami's House
[An Nahar] Internal Security Forces on Tuesday jugged two people suspected of throwing a hand grenade at the entrance of Faisal Omar Karami's house in Tripoli on Sunday, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA identified the two suspects by their initials M. Q. and N. F.

It added that Sherlocks were interrogating them at the Tripoli cop shoppe in order to uncover the incident's circumstances.

NNA also quoted Faisal Karami as saying that "the authorities concerned referred the case to the military judiciary given that the crime harms national security, because it targeted the security and stability of Tripoli, the North and Leb."

Two of Karami's bodyguards were maimed at dawn Sunday when unknown assailants tossed the grenade at his house.

A security source told Voice of Leb radio station that occupants of a speeding vehicle tossed the grenade at 1:00 am at Karami's vehicle, which was parked near his home.

While refusing to accuse any side, Karami said the attack was a "political message."
"We will keep our political and historic stances," he vowed.

The incident is "very dangerous" although it did not cause any damage, Faisal's father, ex-PM Omar Karami, said later Sunday.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
Leb's Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani condemned the attack, warning that "the recurrent daily attacks in Leb indicate that the hands of evil are still seeking to cause harm to Leb and its people."
