Parole Denied for Inmate Patricia Dianne Krenwinkel

By California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
Published: 01/24/2011

CORONA -- The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Board of Parole Hearings (BPH) today denied parole for convicted killer and former Charles Manson associate Patricia Dianne Krenwinkel during a hearing at the California Institution for Women (CIW). Krenwinkel was convicted in 1971 of first-degree murder for her involvement in the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders.

Krenwinkel, 63, was convicted in Los Angeles County of seven counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Sharon Tate-Polanski (who was seven months pregnant), Thomas Jay Sebring, Abigail Ann Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Earl Parent, and Leno and Rosemary La Bianca in 1969.

She originally received a death sentence, which was converted to life in prison by a California Supreme Court ruling that invalidated all death sentences prior to 1972.

This was her 13th appearance before the BPH panel since her incarceration. She is currently serving her sentence at the California Institution for Women in Corona. Krenwinkel will be up for her next parole review in seven years.

#11  The Abnormal Sex Life of Egypt's Nasser? Who Gives a shit ?

Considering that at the time, Nasser, an advocate of pan-arab nationalism and later a socialist, had nationalized the Suez Canal, was setting up the short-lived United Arab Republic with Syria and was also getting miltary and technical support from the Soviets (there was a Cold War going on), and launched the Six Day War against Israel.

So back then, it was a pretty big deal.

Afghanistan
300 Militants Killed in E Afghanistan Last Year
A nice number for one of the four compass points... not to mention south of the border, and whatever was accomplished in non-joint operations.
[Tolo News] Nearly 300 gunnies were killed in joint military operations in the east by coalition and Afghan cops last year, foreign and Afghan military officials said Sunday.

The counter-insurgency offensives in eastern Afghanistan ended up with deaths of 30 Afghan army mercenaries, military officials said.

They said the operations had led to seizure of a huge number of weapon caches.

"255 gunnies were killed, 35 others were nabbed and another 35 were jugged after being maimed in firefights," said General Mohammad Afzal, commander of the second battalion in 202 Selab Corps.

Ten Militants Chieu Hoi in Kunduz
[Tolo News] A group of 10 forces of Evil in the northern Kunduz province on Saturday have renounced violence, Police officials said.

A ten-member hard boy group joined the Afghan grinding of the peace processor in Kunduz province yesterday, police officials told TOLOnews.

The men were active in Dasht-e-Archi district of Kuduz and handed over their guns to government, officials added.

Officials said they have launched military operation in the province to wipe out gun-hung tough guys from insecure areas.

Local elders are said to have played an important role in mediating between the government and forces of Evil to encourage anti-government gangs to embrace the Afghan government's peace call.

Taliban forces of Evil have yet to comment.

In the past one month, more than 200 forces of Evil have laid down their weapons and surrendered to Afghan government.

Arabia
SA: Al Qaeda targets funeral preparation industry for recruitment
Saudi Interior Ministry spokesman Major General Mansour al-Turki informed Asharq Al-Awsat that the Al Qaeda organization has targeted youths working in the funeral preparation industry in Saudi Arabia for radicalization and recruitment. Al-Turki also confirmed that the Saudi authorities are carefully monitoring the situation.

This revelation comes at the same time that Riyadh released a list of 47 most wanted terrorist suspects who are Saudi nationals thought to be living abroad, including one Saudi national who is just 18 years old.

Saudi Interior Ministry spokesman Major General Mansour al-Turki also told Asharq Al-Awsat that "we are all aware that the deviant group is seeking to exploit any opportunity. If it was capable of recruiting a 3-year old child it would not hesitate about doing so."

Al-Turki also added that "one of the targets exploited by the deviant group to recruit new members is the funeral preparation industry...some [Al Qaeda members] push youth to work in this industry so that they can see death and the state of corpses, whilst others attempt to infiltrate funeral preparation companies in order to find vulnerable youth in an attempt to deceive and recruit them to serve the goals of the deviant group."

Major General al-Turki also confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Interior is monitoring cases in which Al Qaeda members' recruited people from within the funeral preparation industry.

The Interior Ministry spokesman also called on everybody to be careful from the deceptive methods used by Al Qaeda to recruit new members and attract sympathizers, he said "what is required from everybody is care and caution over their children, whether they are young or old."

Al Qaeda continues to recruit new members and attract sympathizers in Saudi Arabia, as revealed by the list of 47 most wanted terrorists issued by the Saudi Foreign Ministry.

Major General Mansour al-Turki also told Asharq Al-Awsat that "so long as we continue to monitor these violations, and are aware that there are a number of Saudi Arabians who continue to be deceived by the deviant group and its ideology...this is enough to reveal that we are not doing enough as a society to ensure that our children are immune to this ideology."

Al-Turki also stressed that Saudi Arabia is pursuing a long-term strategy with regards to dealing with Al Qaeda, which includes the neutralization and elimination of "Al Qaeda ideology." He added that the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz had given assurances in this regard, although he acknowledged that "eliminating this ideology could take some time."

Major General Mansour al-Turki also confirmed that the Saudi Arabian security apparatus are committed to preventing Al Qaeda members from carrying out any plots, and will continue to pursue them both inside and outside of the country, and that they will do everything in their power to arrest them and free the world from their evil.
Does anyone out there know why "youths" in this industry are especially vulnerable to radicalization?

At least 35 dead in Moscow airport suicide bombing
At least 35 people were killed at Russia's largest airport. President Medvedev has vowed to capture and punish the culprits behind the bombing, which also injured about 130 people during the busy late afternoon at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow.

"The explosion was right near me, I was not hit but I felt the shock wave -- people were falling," said Yekaterina Alexandrova, a translator who was waiting to meet a client flying in from abroad.

"I heard a loud boom... we thought someone had just dropped something. But then I saw casualties being carried away," said a check-in attendant who gave her name as Elena.

Medvedev has delayed his departure for the Davos international business conference in Switzerland.

No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack, but dozens of Internet surfers, writing in Russian, praised the suicide bomber on unofficial Islamist site kavkazcenter.com.

Deadly Blast Strikes in Moscow’s Main Airport
An explosion rocked an international terminal of Moscow’s busiest airport on Monday afternoon. There were conflicting reports on the number of dead and injured. The authorities were seeking to determine the cause.

Moscow police were put on terror alert, the RT television station reported.

Russia’s Interfax Agency reported that the blast in the airport, Domodedovo, killed as many as 10 and left many more injured. Russia’s Investigative Committee said there were at least 20 casualties, without differentiating between injured and dead. News reports citing anonymous officials said at least 10 people had died. The Health Ministry reported that 130 had been injured.

Russian news agencies, citing witnesses, said airport halls were filled with smoke, so much so that it was difficult to count the number of dead. International arrivals were being diverted to nearby, according to local media reports.

Bomb explodes in Moscow Domodedovo airport (DME), double digit fatalities
Mod note: There were entries for this story, so I chose the one posted the earliest
NYT account via Tipper at 1005 CT. AoS.
An explosion ripped through the arrival hall of Moscow's Domodedovo Airport. At least 2 have been killed, Russian news agencies say, although the BBC says that ten people have been killed in the blast. An airport employee confirmed the explosion.

The explosion took place in the international terminal of the airport, in the baggage claim area, at 16:40 Moscow time. At least 20 have been injured. The arrival terminal has been closed, RIA Novosti reports.
Huh. So the luggage arrived from abroad? Or it was intended to go somewhere else but exploded early?
Eyewitnesses said that rescuers began to evacuate people from the area of the explosion. "One of them was all covered with blood and had his leg bandaged. Another one had blood stains on his shirt," an unidentified eyewitness said.

Domodedovo is the largest airport in Russia in terms of passenger and cargo traffic (22.25 million passengers used the airport in 2010, which is a 19.2% increase over 2009), and is one of the three major Moscow airports along with Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo.

From Xinhua, which has a bit more detail than Itar/Tass version at the moment:
(Xinhua) -- At least 31 people were killed and over 130 were injured in an explosion at Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday, the Russian Health Ministry said.

The Russian Investigative Committee's Transport Investigative Department has confirmed that an explosion occurred at Domodedovo Airport's luggage reclaim zone at the international arrivals terminal.

But a spokesperson for the Federal Customs Services (FTS) told Interfax news agency that the blast happened in the lounge area near the Asia cafe next to an international departure area.

The preliminary reports suggest that it might be a suicide bombing, a source told local media.

Eyewitnesses said two terrorists blew themselves up when people emerged from the international arrivals zone.

"According to available information, an explosion occurred at Domodedovo's arrivals hall at 16:32 Moscow time (1332 GMT)," a spokeswoman for the investigation committee, Tatyana Morozova, said.

The Health Ministry said among the 130 injured, 20 are in serious condition.

A law enforcement source said three men are wanted in connection with the explosion.

"According to intelligence, three men may have been involved in organizing the explosion. They have been living in the region of the Russian capital for some time," the source was quoted by Interfax as saying.

A source said the blast was equivalent to 5-10 kg of TNT.

Eyewitnesses said there was a heavy smoke at the airport and the entry from the arrivals zone has been closed.

After the blast, Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport is accepting planes that were bound for Domodedovo.

Moscow police has tightened the security in the city's other airports and metro system.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who called this blast a terrorist attack, is holding an urgent meeting and ordered measures to ensure security at all Russian airports and transport facilities.

Medvedev has decided to cancel his trip to the annual World Economic Forum in Switzerland's Davos after the deadly blast, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Domodedovo is Moscow's most updated and busiest airport. In 2004, two planes which took off from the airport were blown up by female Chechen suicide bombers, killing a total of 90 people on board.

#1  Fox is reporting 31 dead and 130 injured now. They believe 10,000 pounds of TNT or equiv used in baggage area that received international flights from Dulles (United)and Houston plus served by Air France and British airwaysn(Singapore). #12  The BBC updates to 35 dead as of 12:35 ET.

The Wall Street Journal appears to have the same sources as European Conservative:

Officials at Domodedovo, south of the capital, said the airport was still functioning. Some international flights were diverted to other Moscow airports, where security was also tightened.

The blast took place outside a security zone near the baggage claim area, near the Asia Kafe, where people await arriving passengers, Interfax news agency said, quoting the Federal Customs Service.

Russian news agencies quoted security officials as saying the bomb, laced with metal pieces to increase its power to kill, was detonated in the crowd of people meeting arriving passengers. The blast was equal to seven kilograms (15 pounds) of TNT, the reports said.

Interfax quoted law enforcement sources as saying the bomber was probably from southern Russia's restive North Caucasus region. The report said police were looking for three suspects thought to be linked to the attack. No person or group claimed responsibility for the blast.

A law enforcement official told Interfax that cell-phone jamming devices had been switched on following Monday's attack to prevent the bomber's accomplices from setting off another explosion. The report said three men living in the Moscow area were suspected of having organized the attack.

#17  Richard Aubrey: Putin used it as an excuse to consolidate power. However, the bottom line was an odd one.

As with 9-11, the impulse for the attack, and many of the attackers, were Wahhabis, of unspecified foreign origin, Arabian region, much like the Saudi Wahhabis that attacked the US. They had picked up other radicals en route, the largest group of which were from Ingushetia.

While they initially celebrated, because the assumption was that it was the Chechens that were responsible, this backfired terribly on the Chechens, as they were the ones labeled child killers, and sympathy for them dried up around the world.

Because of this, the Chechens discontinued terrorist attacks against the Russians for the better part of two years.

But who would the Russians attack? Saudi Arabia? Yemen? They had already flattened a goodly portion of Chechnya. So Putin fell back to just strengthening his own power.

But this time, this is an attack on Moscow, something that the Russians tend to get weird about.

#18  Buried for many years by the American Party Media is this.

The Russians while profiting from the process none the less are the back up line to the Pakistan logistics into Central Asia. They have as much interest in destroying the opium fields as we have in destroying the base of operations for the terrorists. So, begrudgingly we're once again allied to end another ugly problem in the world. Someone is sending a message.

I can see that. Problem is, he didn't do anything to the bad guys, the potential bad guys, the possible bad guys, or some random guys just in case.
His black ops folks are supposed to be pretty good. Was there ever an unexplained death or deaths among a bunch of well-connected Wahhabis? Not sure we'd know, but the info might be out there.
Now, you can bust Chechens when it's them and some SA-funded wackjobs from Yemen And you can bust some folks in, say, Syria or Jordan when it's really some clowns from, say, Hamburg. And you can bust an ISI office in Pakistan when it's really some bozos from Uighuristan or whatever they have there.
Because if the guys you bust didn't really do it, they didn't really do it this time but they're planning a next time. You know that.
We can't do it. See Wretchard on South Korea and Malaysian secret weapons in the piracy struggle.

IOW, getting the tactical leader of a suicide squad lacks a certain satisfaction.

#22  A quiet moment for the innocent victims and their families...

Now who has access to the passenger manifests for these flights? Why THIS TIME? Who was picking up their bags?

A pretty tight window by US standards. Which flights were on the ground 20-45 minutes before the blast?

Who has been thru there? Do they 'meet&greet' at the bag stations? Do they have 'no curb parking' rules for baggage? Did someone just walk in with the bomb bag? Is there street/door video collecting traffic patterns and license plates?

5-10kg of material? So they have a blast radius? That's easily a vest. Why the focus on bags in the news? Misdirection?

Any analysts? Who has other channels?

Bomb Attack At Moscow's Main Airport
Moscow's Domodedovo airport - the busiest in the Russian capital - has been rocked by an explosion that has killed at least 10 people.

Dozens more are thought to have been injured in the blast, which reports suggest may have been the work of a suicide bomber.

Emergency services are on the scene and tending to the wounded.

The airport is 40km (25 miles) south-east of the city centre, and is popular with foreign workers and tourists.

Early local reports suggested the blast may have hit the baggage reclaim area of the international arrivals hall.

A RIA Novosti news agency correspondent at the scene reported that a lot of smoke could be seen in the area, and there was a smell of burning.

The UK's Foreign Office said it was checking if any Britons were involved.

The airport is 40km (25 miles) south-east of the city centre, and is popular with foreign workers and tourists flying into the city.

China-Japan-Koreas
Norks Execute Two Over S. Korean Propaganda
Some 500 people in North Korea attended a public execution of a man and a woman caught reading South Korean propaganda, an activist claimed Sunday citing sources in the North. Choi Sung-yong, the head of Family Assembly Abducted to North Korea said security services rounded up some 500 people including 50 family members of South Korean prisoners of war and abduction victims and made them watch the execution.

The victims were a 45-year-old woman accused of reading a South Korean propaganda leaflet and failing to notify authorities and a high-ranking regional military officer charged with pocketing the dollar bills that were sent along with the leaflets.

Choi said the families of the two were sent to a camp for political prisoners in South Pyongan Province.
May God watch over them, for it's likely no one else will.
Activist groups recently gathered at the border in Gangwon Province and other areas and sent leaflets, one-dollar bills and DVDs to North Korea attached to helium balloons.

"We have information from a source that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il was going to visit Sariwon in North Hwanghae Province soon, and it looks like authorities there held a public execution to warn the people there off any signs of dissent," Choi said. "It seems North Korea is stepping up monitoring and crackdowns on people who read or listen to anti-communist propaganda to ensure the hereditary transfer of power" from Kim to his son Jong-un.

North Korean defectors said anyone who picks up an anti-communist leaflet must notify the authorities on pain of severe punishment. They said North Koreans are taught from a young age that eating South Korean-made cookies causes gut rot while picking up pens or lighters made in the South will make the hands decay.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan's Godfather of the Taliban dies
A retired Pakistani spy known as "the godfather of the Taliban" has died in captivity in Pakistan's north-western tribal belt, 10 months after he was kidnapped with a British journalist working for Channel 4.

Pakistani news channels reported that Sultan Amir Tarar, a legendary figure in the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency, had been killed by militants in Waziristan. The Taliban issued a statement saying he had died of a heart attack. An army spokesman could not confirm the reports. But a senior officer said that "all indicators are that this unfortunate incident took place".

Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's ambassador to the US, tweeted yesterday: "On Col (R) Amir Sultan Tarar aka Col Imam's death: Prayers for the departed and for the bereaved family."

Tarar was kidnapped in Waziristan in March 2010 alongside Asad Qureshi, a British journalist of Pakistani origin, and Khalid Khawaja, a former ISI official turned human rights activist. Qureshi was released last September, reportedly on payment of a ransom; Khawaja was killed by his captors in April.

Tarar's death marks the brutal demise of one of the most colourful and controversial figures in the shadowy world of spy games along the troubled borderlands between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Dressed in his trademark outfit of a tight, white turban and a shabby second-world war paratroop jacket, Tarar personified the complexities of Pakistan's multi-faceted policy towards militant Islam. Tarar trained in guerrilla warfare at an American special forces base in the 1970s and spent the next decade at the heart of Pakistan and America's covert war against Soviet forces occupying Afghanistan.

God Father of the Taliban Killed in Pakistan
[Tolo News] Former top ISI official, Colonel Imam, known as the 'god father of the Taliban' was killed after his family failed to pay the demanded ransom, reports say.
Thanks, guys. Thanks a...BANG!
Colonel Imam was kidnapped along with a British journalist and Khalid Khwaja on the way to North Wazoo capital of Miranshah.

Usman Punjabi was believed to be criminal masterminding the abduction.

The kidnapping group had demanded around Rs 5 million in ransom.

Security Officials have confirmed the death.

The dead body of colonel Imam is said to be with kidnappers who have demanded money for returning the body.
Well, they didn't want him alive, what makes them think they want him dead?
They wanted him dead, they just don't want the stinking corpse...
Colonel Imam has left four offspring behind, including two sons and two daughters.

Colonel Imam, speaking in Urdu in a video footage had warned that he would unveil intelligence secrets about Afghanistan, India, the United States, Russia and other countries, if Pakistain's government did not accelerate its attempts for his release.
Let's hope he did. That could be ever so much more fun than WikiLeaks.
Hard for a dead man to spill secrets. Wonder if the ISI his family refused to pay the ransom and dared the kidnappers to kill him.
There is the possibility that he spilled his secrets before he died... or gave them the key to a secret safety deposit box stuffed full of documents ...
"I urge the President, the Prime Minister and Chief of the Army to accept the demands of the Lashkar-e- Jagnoi as soon as possible," Imam had said in a video.

Colonel Imam was one of the key figures in Pakistain's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and had criminal masterminded the formation of Taliban in Pakistain.

Three drone strikes kill 13 in NWA
[Pak Daily Times] A series of unmanned US drone strikes in North Wazoo on Sunday killed at least 13 terrorists, officials said, as rustics erupted into the streets to protest against the aerial campaign.
Good shooting, guys.
The first two attacks took place in Datta Khel, some 40 kilometres west of North Wazoo's main town of Miranshah. The third was in Mandokhel, around 60 kilometres south of the town.

In the first strike, two missiles were fired on a vehicle seconds after it stopped outside a house in Datta Khel, officials said.

"The US drone hit a car immediately after it parked outside a house. Four Orcs and similar vermin have been killed," an intelligence official in Miranshah told AFP, adding that the vehicle was destroyed and the house badly damaged.

A second intelligence official said the drone fired two missiles.

An intelligence official in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar also confirmed the attack and the number of missiles, saying: "At least four Orcs and similar vermin have been killed."

Another US drone then fired two missiles at a cycle of violence travelling in the same town, killing three terrorists, local officials said.

"Three Orcs and similar vermin have been killed in the second attack," a security official in Miranshah told AFP.

Another security official said the Orcs and similar vermin were riding a cycle of violence when they were hit by the US drone.
