--Tech & Moderator Notes
Egypt expects to up energy subsidies, maintain food subsidies ($10b on fuel in 2009)
Egypt is suffocating under the weight of massive state subsidies - $11b ($1 = 6 Egyptian pounds) per year on subsidized fuel alone, and $2.67b on subsidized wheat (totaling 6.5% of its GDP of about $200b). The problem for Mubarak is that he needs to wean the public off these subsidies because of their escalating costs. The demonstrations may have been sparked by a move to cut fuel and food subsidies.
According to Beltone, the government spent LE 63 billion on petroleum subsidies during fiscal year 2009/2010, 40 percent of which went to diesel and 22 percent to butane, and this figure is expected to rise to LE 67.7 billion by the end of the current fiscal year.

#1  Notice that Egypt's food and fuel subsidies are 10x the military aid Uncle Sam provides. These subsidies are the numbers that will make or break Mubarak, not the measly amount of military aid we provide him. What he needs to do is open up* segments of the economy Chinese-style to foreign investments in light industry. There is no reason that clothing currently labeled Made in China or Vietnam should not be assembled in Egypt. Egyptian wages are way lower than China's (min Egyptian wage per month is $6.50, compared to $100 for many Chinese cities), and its close proximity to Western end markets ought to be a real advantage.

* Egypt's ultimate problem, like that of many Third World countries, is that the economy is relatively closed to competition. The real benefit of East Asian-style export-driven growth is political - governments do not have to stage knock-down drag-out fights against the interests representing minuscule but powerful domestic monopolies, since the markets being fought over are not only foreign (i.e. Western), but massive and unregulated (from the standpoint of market shares not being allocated based on political pull, as in most Third World countries).

The Chinese Communist Party seems to have pulled it off without losing power. If the bulk of the population benefits, even if some benefit more than others, there are not enough real hardship cases to form the ranks of people who want to revolt. This is why the Chinese Communist Party is still standing - most people have benefited, such that only a fringe are deprived enough to risk their lives taking on the government.

Africa North
Egypt imposes media blackout
[Iran Press TV] Embattled Egyptian geriatric President Hosni Mubarak's regime is stepping up its crackdown on media as government's efforts to crack down on protesters have failed.

Pro-Mubarak vigilantes have stepped up their attack on journalists amid fresh protests in Cairo's Tahrir square.

Mubarak's brute squad have stormed hotels in Cairo hunting for foreign journalists.
This is how a real thug regime behaves.
Campaign of intimidation
The move is seen as a concerted campaign to intimidate international journalists and impose a news blackout on Egypt's massive anti-government protests.

Medics say several journalists and foreign nationals are among the dead and maimed.

A Press TV correspondent says the brutes broke into the journalists' center in the capital Cairo earlier Thursday. Foreign correspondents, photographers and cameramen reporting on the violence have also said that Mubarak's vigilantes have attacked them.

Mass rally in Tahrir Square
The move has been slammed by the international community and foreign media covering the anti-government protests across the country.

The Egyptian government's efforts to crack down on protesters have failed. Many still remain in Cairo's Tahrir square, which has become the symbol of the ongoing revolutionary movement.

This comes as main opposition figures have called for another mass rally on Friday. They say it could be geriatric President Hosni Mubarak's day of departure.

Protesters have vowed to stand firm despite the deadly festivities that left several people dead and at least 1,500 others maimed in Cairo on Wednesday and the early hours of Thursday.

According to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society, at least 300 people have so far been killed and thousands more injured during nationwide protests in troubled Egypt.

Mubarak's snipers flee Cairo square
[Iran Press TV] Reports say Egyptian anti-government protesters have forced out thousands of plain clothes police forces and snipers from Cairo's Tahrir Square.

This comes as anti-government demonstrators are gathering in Tahrir Square as protests against embattled geriatric President Hosni Mubarak continue for a tenth day.

Main opposition figures have called for another mass rally on Friday. They say it could be geriatric President Hosni Mubarak's day of departure.

Millions have start marching towards Tahrir square, which has become the symbol of the ongoing revolutionary movement.

A Press TV correspondent in Cairo interviewed with some anti-government protesters on the streets of Cairo. They were some of the many who witnessed the bitter incidents taking place in Egypt.

They told our correspondent that protests would continue on Friday, which organizers have dubbed the March of the Million.

Egypt Slaps Travel Ban on Former Ministers, Officials
[An Nahar] Egypt's public prosecutor said on Thursday that several ministers and officials, including former interior minister Habib al-Adly, have been banned from travel pending investigation.

They are "banned from traveling abroad while their bank accounts have been frozen until security is reinstated, and until investigative authorities conduct probes to establish who was criminally and administratively responsible for all those events," Abdel Megid Mahmoud said, quoted by the MENA news agency.

Those being investigated include Adly, steel magnate and senior member of the ruling National Democratic Party Ahmed Ezz, former tourism minister Zoheir Garranah and former housing minister Ahmed al-Maghrabi.

Earlier Thursday, Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq said Egypt's widely despised former interior minister Habib al-Adly is to be probed over the absence of police on the streets during violent protests that have shaken the country.

Suleiman: Violent protesters will be punished
[Jerusalem Post Front Page] Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman said he will release non-violent youths jugged during protests, Rooters reported on Thursday.

Suleiman added that violent protesters in Tahrir Square will be punished.

Also Thursday, Egyptian state television quoted Suleiman as saying that Egyptian geriatric President Hosni Mubarak's son will not seek to succeed his father in elections later this year, in the the latest concession to anti-government protesters.

It was widely believed that Mubarak was grooming his son Gamal, 46, to succeed him despite significant public opposition.

In related news, the Egyptian attorney-general on Thursday issued a travel ban and froze the bank accounts of several former ministers that are being investigated, Egyptian state television reported.
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
One of the ministers is reportedly former interior minister Habib el-Adly who is being investigated for pulling police out of Tahrir Square last week. With police absent from the area, there was looting in Cairo.

Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik on Thursday apologized for the attack by regime supporters on anti-government protesters in central Cairo, vowing to investigate who was behind it.

The protesters have accused the regime of sending a force of paid thugs and coppers in civilian clothes to attack them with rocks, sticks and Molotov cocktails to crush their movement to oust Egyptian geriatric President Hosni Mubarak.

Shafik told state TV, "I offer my apology for everything that happened yesterday because it's neither logical nor rational."

The public apology from a top government official was highly unusual. Shafik called the attack a "blatant mistake" and promised to investigate "so everyone knows who was behind it."

Anti-govt protesters take over October 6 bridge in Cairo
[Jerusalem Post Front Page] Anti-government protesters took over the "Sixth of October" Bridge overlooking Tahrir (Liberation) Square in Cairo on Thursday.

Soldiers that were guarding the over-pass retreated, and demonstrators supporting Egyptian geriatric President Hosni Mubarak were driven off of the overpass, Al-Jazeera reported.

The Sixth of October is the day that Egypt attacked Israel in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Both the centrally-located bridge and a Cairo neighborhood are named after the day.

Egyptian army tanks and soldiers moved to end violence between anti-government protesters and supporters of Mubarak in Cairo's central square on Thursday after standing by for nearly a day as the two sides battled with rocks, sticks, bottles and Molotov cocktails.

Hours after automatic gunfire hit the anti-government protest camp at Tahrir Square, killing at least three protesters, soldiers carrying rifles could be seen lining up between the two sides around 11 a.m. Several hundred other soldiers were moving toward the front line.

Four tanks cleared a highway overpass from where Mubarak supporters had hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails onto the protesters.

The pre-dawn firing escalated what appeared to be a well-orchestrated series of assaults on the demonstrators that began when Mubarak supporters charged into the square on horses and camels on Wednesday afternoon, lashing people with whips, while others rained Molotov cocktails and rocks from rooftops.

Anti-Mubarak demonstrators traded showers of rocks and other projectiles in a counter-assault that drove their assailants out of the square within hours. Anti-government protesters took army trucks and set up an ad-hoc front line on the northern edge of the square, near the famed Egyptian Museum. The two sides traded volleys of rocks and Molotov cocktails for much of the night, until sustained bursts of automatic gunfire and powerful single shots rained into the square starting at around 4 a.m. and continuing for more than two hours.

Mubarak allies and protesters battle it out
Egyptian troops fired warning shots at the main rally against President Hosni Mubararak in central Cairo today in a bid to end festivities with regime supporters and the protesters reacted jubilantly, an AFP correspondent reported.

"The army and the people hand in hand," the crowd shouted after dozens were maimed in running battles between pro and anti-Mubarak demonstrators on Cairo's central Tahrir Square.

The army has positioned its tanks and troops around the square but this is thought to be the first time they have opened fire since they were deployed on Friday and police vanished from the capital's streets.

Tensions between supporters of embattled Mubarak and opposition protesters boiled over as violent festivities broke out on Cairo's Tahrir Square, injuring at least 26.

The confrontations erupted after thousands of Mubarak supporters marched into Tahrir, which has become the focal point for nine days of anti-government protests.

Throwing stones

Protesters on both sides began throwing stones at each other, with some of the fiercest festivities breaking out in front of the world famous Egyptian Museum.

At least 10 people were maimed in the initial confrontation, and bloody head wounds were visible on many, an AFP correspondent said.
Pro-Mubarak supporters riding horses and camels then charged anti-government protesters, who surrounded them.

At least six were dragged from their animals and beaten, a second AFP correspondent said.

Elsewhere, an angry crowd of anti-Mubarak protesters beat at least 10 pro-regime demonstrators with sticks.

Soldiers surrounding the square took cover from the projectiles, and the windows of at least one army truck were broken.

Some troops stood on tanks and appealed for calm but did not otherwise intervene.

"The pro-Mubarak NDP (National Democratic Party) and the secret police dressed in plain clothes, invaded the place to get rid of the revolt," protester Mohammed Zomor, 63, told AFP.

Fighting took place around army tanks deployed in the square, with stones bouncing off the armoured vehicles. Some protesters were engaged in fist fights, and others were using clubs.

The opposition said plain clothes coppers had stormed the square.

"Members of security forces dressed in plain clothes and a number of thugs have stormed Tahrir Square," three opposition groups said in a statement.

Several thousand pro-Mubarak demonstrators also rallied in the upmarket Mohandeseen district, although no violence was reported there. The festivities came after pro-regime demonstrators staged protests at points across Cairo, pledging their allegiance to the beleaguered Mubarak, who has said he will not stand for re-election in September.

But the long-time ruler has not indicated any plans to leave office, a key demand of the anti-government protesters who have shaken Egypt with nine days of unprecedented demonstrations.

Fires into Egypt Rally Kill Five Protesters
[Tolo News] Five people were killed after supporters of geriatric President Hosni Mubarak opened fire on protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Thursday.

Hundreds of Thousands of people have gathered in central Cairo square to bring an end to geriatric President Hosni Mubarak's government.

In a new statement the Mohammedan Brotherhood, opposition movement, suggested a national unity government to replace Mubarak's 30-year old rule.

"We demand that this regime is tossed and we demand the formation of a national unity government for all the factions," the Brotherhood said in a statement on Al Jizz.

Confirming new deaths of anti-government protesters, health officials in Egypt said 836 others were hurt in Wednesday festivities.

On Tuesday this week geriatric President Hosni Mubarak pledged he will not run for the Presidential elections this year. He also said he will reform constitution.

Protesters said Mubarak's promise was not sufficient while chanting "we will not leave. He will leave".
It has been over a week that people have staged demonstrations, but Tuesday rally was called the biggest since the beginning of the unrest.

About 300 people have bit the dust so far in the uprising, according to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society.

Protesters said Mubarak's new pledge was a trick to stay in power.

Demonstrators are planning to march on the presidential palace if Mubarak refused to quit, opposition leader Mohammad Elbaradei told BBC.

Some protesters said they no more trust their leader to stick to his promises to make constitutional reform.

"The speech is useless and only inflames our anger. We will continue to protest," Shadi Morkos, a protester, told Rooters

Mubarak practices terrorism and involves the army
[Ennahar] Tahrir Square (Liberation) in Cairo, a center of protest against the Egyptian president for nine days, turned this Wednesday into a battleground between pro and anti-Mubarak making at least 500 maimed.

The opposition has called for new mass protests on Friday to demand the immediate departure of Mr. Mubarak, despite the promise of the President to fade at the end of his term in September, and the order of the army for a return to calm.

Arrived by the thousands in the morning, supporters of the Head of State have violently clashed with protesters. They threw boulders at the demonstrators from rooftops and balconies of buildings overlooking Tahrir Square, the scene of rebellion since January 25.

The battle has also won the outskirts of the Egyptian Museum, which houses priceless treasures of the ancient Pharaohs. The soldiers formed a human chain to protect the institution, but in the late afternoon, two petrol bombs landed in the courtyard of the museum.

Earlier, pro-Mubarak protesters were on camel and horseback, before being surrounded. At least six people were thrown from their horses, beaten with batons and dragged to the ground, faces covered in blood.

And the demonstrators threw stones and beaten with fists and sticks around the army tanks guarding the access to the site. With the exception of warning shots early in the afternoon, the military did not interpose.

At nightfall, tear gas bombs were fired against anti-Mubarak protesters near the site, but their origin was unclear. The opposition says plainclothes coppers were among the pro-Mubarak, information denied by the Interior Ministry.

A journalist and an AFP photographer saw hundreds of maimed, sometimes carried on the shoulders of their comrades.

Volunteer doctors at Ibad al-Rahman Mosque, near the place where a field hospital has been installed, said they received at least 500 maimed.

"What we see before us has never happened before. Clashes between Egyptian, it is a civil war," lamented Mohamed Sayed Mostafa, 26.

At midday, the army called on demonstrators to go home. "Your claims have been heard," said a front man on public television, calling on protesters to go home for "security and stability" to be restored.

In a speech Tuesday night on television, Mubarak, in power for nearly 30 years, announced he would not seek re-election during the presidential election in September and has committed to a peaceful transition.

But this announcement has not quelled the challenge. The Mohammedan Brotherhood, the main opposition force, rejected "all proposed partial measures" by the president and refused to let him remain in office until September.

Tahrir Square, where thousands protesters camped at night despite the curfew, two large banners were still deployed, one in English saying "the people want the fall of the regime" and the other in Arabic, addressed to Mubarak: "Go away!".

The protest movement has called for a new mass demonstration on Friday, called "Friday's departure" in which it intends to gather, as on Tuesday, more than a million people.

Internet access was partially restored by midday, after more than five days off. And the curfew in force since Friday in the Egyptian capital as well as Alexandria (north) and Suez (east) has been reduced. Until now established from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 am, it will be applied from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 am.

The Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon said "unacceptable the attacks against peaceful demonstrators" and called for "an orderly transition in calm." The White House has called for "restraint", saying "deplore and condemn" violence against demonstrators in Egypt.

And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned against the risk that the popular uprising in Egypt leads to "a period of instability and uncertainty for many years" in the region.

According to an unconfirmed report of the UN, the festivities of the first week of protests have left at least 300 dead and thousands injured.

The United States also expressed their concerns for the media. Al-Jazeera TV channel is banned in Egypt since Sunday. The Belgian daily Le Soir on Wednesday announced the arrest and beating of its correspondent Serge Dumont. Anti-Mubarak Protesters Scream for "Jihad"
Out of a week of chaos in Egypt comes the bloodiest day yet. Early Thursday morning, the military and anti-Mubarak protesters clashed while small groups of people opened fire on others. The causality toll is quickly rising, as news stations show live streaming video of people being literally lit on fire and others being lynched in front of the camera.

Just as chilling is the fact that hundreds if not thousands of anti-Mubarak protesters have been screaming for "jihad" as they beat other Egyptians, possibly to death.

In Tehrir square in Cairo, many protesters were charging and screaming at supporters of Mubarak, calling for their death and a "jihad" against Mubarak and anyone who even seems to be supporting him. This is most likely because of the radical Islamic group "Muslim Brotherhood," which is one of the major players striving for power in Egypt.

Mauritanian army foiled an attack from Al Qaeda to kill President
[Ennahar] The Mauritanian army foiled an liquidation attempt Wednesday in Nouakchott against Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, and claimed by Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Around 2:00 (GMT), the army blew up a car packed with explosives at 12 km south of Nouakchott, killing all three occupants who were there, according to a military source who said they tried "to infiltrate into the capital to carry out attacks."

Nine soldiers, who were about 300 yards from the huge kaboom heard in several neighborhoods of the capital, were maimed by flying debris.

AQIM has quickly claimed an liquidation attempt, saying through the private agency information online Nouakchott (ANI) that it "was intended to assassinate" the Head of State Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

A front man for the organization, who contacted the ANI from northern Mali, has also said that contrary to the Mauritanian version, there were only two occupants in the vehicle and it is they who took the initiative to explode at the approach of the military.

Ould Abdel Aziz has visited maimed soldiers, all part of the presidential guard battalion.

The vehicle involved was one of three sought since Saturday by the Mauritanian army who was on alert after receiving information on their entry into Mauritania from Nema region (southeast), near the border with Mali.

Arabia
Yemen reinforces security in capital
The Yemeni Interior Ministry has reinforced its security forces around the capital Sana'a and blocked byways to prevent the smuggling of weapons into major cities.

The measures were taken after it was reported that opposition parties were planning to stage an anti-government demonstration of millions of protesters in Sana'a on February 3.

Authorities have also warned executives at major investment banks that al-Qaeda beturbanned goons in Yemen may be planning attacks against financial institutions or their high-ranking executives.

Intelligence analysts are concerned that operatives in Yemen may try to send package bombs or chemical agents to Wall Street bankers through the mail, NBC News reported. Authorities are also concerned that beturbanned goons may be discussing the names of leading bankers.

The opposition groups have reportedly called for their members and armed tribal supporters outside Sana'a to join the march.

Last Thursday Sana'a was the scene of an anti-government demonstration of thousands of people calling for the ouster of President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh.
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, after serving as a lieutenant colonel in the army. He had been part of the conspiracy that bumped off his predecessor, Ibrahim al-Hamdi, in the usual tiresome military coup, and he has maintained power by keeping Yemen's many tribes fighting with each other, rather than uniting to string him up. ...

They also called for an end to what they call unilateral action taken over the constitution.

The moves made by the ruling party earlier this year could make Saleh the president of Yemen for life.

Since then, tensions have been running high between the ruling party and the opposition.

Britain
Bangladeshi 'bomb plotter' denies charge
[Bangla Daily Star] A Bangladeshi national working for British Airways (BA) in England conspired with a radical preacher to blow up a US-bound aeroplane, a London court has heard.

From his Newcastle home, Rajib Karim shared details of his BA contacts in e-mails to Mohammedan holy man Anwar al-Awlaki, Woolwich Crown Court was told.

The computer expert worked for the airline in the city and had access to BA offices there and at Heathrow.

Karim, 31, denies plotting to blow up an aircraft and gaining a UK job to exploit terrorist purposes. He has already pleaded guilty to three other terror charges, the jury was told.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, my client was perfectly willing to commit many acts of mayhem and murder, but he'd never, ever blow up a plane!"
Karim is accused of plotting to blow up a plane, sharing information of use to hate groups such as al-Qaeda, offering to help financial or disruptive attacks on BA, and gaining a UK job to exploit terrorist purposes.

He was nabbed in February 2010 while working for the airline's call centre in Newcastle.

On the first day of the trial, the court heard how Karim came to the UK in 2006 and got a job with BA. The jury was told that Karim established a "deep cover", joining a gym, playing football and never airing extreme views.

It is alleged that he was communicating with a terror cell as well as Anwar al-Awlaki, who has never been caught and is believed to be hiding in the mountains of Yemen.

Jonathan Laidlaw QC, prosecuting, said the defendant was preparing himself or others for terrorist attacks. He said the court would hear that Karim was an extreme jihadist.

"He believes that terrorism, including the murder of civilians, is permissible to establish a true Islamic state. The defendant was anxious himself to carry out such an attack and he was determined to seek martyrdom - to die and to sacrifice himself for his cause," Laidlaw said.

He also said that those who knew Karim thought he was mild-mannered. He attended two mosques--Grange Park Mosque and University of Newcastle Mosque--and was not known to hold extreme views, the court heard.

Laidlaw said "It was, as far as anybody could tell a perfectly ordinary life he was living."

WikiLeaks: FBI Hunting 3 Qatari Men Involved in 9/11
[An Nahar] The United States is conducting a manhunt for a previously unknown group believed to be involved in the planning of the 9/11 attacks, according to a US cable published in Wednesday's Telegraph newspaper.

In the memo, leaked by the WikiLeaks website, a US official in Qatar told the Department for Homeland Security in Washington that three Qatari men were under suspicion of conducting surveillance operations on the attack sites.

The team, who flew from the US to London a day before the attacks, aroused suspicion after refusing to allow cleaners into their Los Angeles hotel room which staff earlier noted contained several "pilot type uniforms."

According to the cable sent by Mirembe Nantongo, the deputy chief of mission in Doha, the men "visited the World Trade Centre, the Statue of Liberty, the White House and various areas in Virginia," weeks before the attacks.

The group had tickets to fly on an American Airlines Boeing 757 jet from Los Angeles to Washington DC on September 10 but failed to board, and flew to London instead. A day later, the 757 plane was flown into the Pentagon, killing 184 people.

The cable, sent in February 2010, revealed the concerns of hotel staff during the group's stay in Los Angeles.

"Hotel cleaning staff grew suspicious of the men because they noticed pilot type uniforms, several laptops and several cardboard boxes addressed to Syria, Jerusalem, Afghanistan and Jordan in the room," the memo stated.

"The men had... a cellular phone attached by wire to a computer," it added. "The room also contained pin feed computer paper print outs with headers listing pilot names, airlines, flight numbers, and flight times."

A subsequent FBI investigation found that the men's flight tickets and hotel were paid for by a "convicted terrorist," according to the memo.

According to the cable, the three men, named as Meshal Alhajri, Fahad Abdulla and Ali Alfehaid, were helped by a fourth man, Mohamed Al Mansoori, while in the US.

Mansoori, who has never been publicly named in connection with the 9/11 attacks, is suspected of "aiding people who entered the US before the attacks to conduct surveillance... and providing other support to the hijackers."

Mansoori is under FBI investigation and had his visa revoked after the information came to light but "his name was not watchlisted in the class system," implying he may have left the US.

The three Qatari suspects were mentioned in a leaked list of 300 people that the FBI wanted to question over the attacks, which killed over 3,000 people.

The 9/11 Commission report, released in 2004, confirmed that at least two of the hijackers had a "brief stay in Los Angeles about which we know little."

Militants kill four policemen in Balochistan
[Dawn] Gunmen rubbed out four coppers and kidnapped six other people, including a top administrator, in Balochistan, officials said Wednesday.

The incidents took place overnight in the Aab-i-Gum area of the mountainous Bolan region, 60 kilometres south of Quetta, the capital of oil- and gas-rich province.

"Gunmen rubbed out four coppers on the main highway in Aab-i-Gum while they were heading towards Quetta," local senior police official Junaid Ahmad said.

"Earlier, we had reports of five police being killed but one of the coppers, who disappeared into the nearby mountains reported to his bosses on Wednesday morning."

He said there had been no claim of responsibility.

Balochistan's home secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani said gunnies also kidnapped the deputy head of administration in Jhal Magsi town, Shaukat Murghazani, another two civilians and three coppers on the same highway late Tuesday.

"The gunnies allowed family members of Murghazani also travelling with him to go," Durrani said.

Impoverished Balochistan is wracked by an insurgency waged by ethnic Baloch tribes seeking greater autonomy from the federal government and a greater share of profits from the region's natural resources.

Last October, Amnesia Amnesty International called on Pakistain to investigate the alleged torture and killing of more than 40 Baloch politicians and activists against a backdrop of Pak military activities in the province.

The region has also been hit by attacks blamed on Talibs, although sabotage of gas pipelines is a trademark of nationalist beturbanned goons.

Three soldiers, 15 militants killed in Mohmand clash
[Dawn] Up to 40 faceless myrmidons armed with guns and rockets stormed a check post in the tribal district of Mohmand
... Named for the Mohmand clan of the Sarban Pahstuns, a truculent, quarrelsome lot for the most part. In Pakistain, the Mohmands infest their eponymous Agency, spreading down to the plains of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar, Charsadda, and Mardan. Mohmands are also scattered throughout Pakistan in urban areas including Bloody Karachi, Lahore, and Quetta. In Afghanistan they are mainly found in Nangarhar and Kunar province... which is right down the road from Binny's house in Chitral......
killing three soldiers and wounding four in an area where troops are battling to eliminate bully boys.

A military official said troops killed 15 faceless myrmidons in a counter-attack at the paramilitary Frontier Corps post in Mohmand's Anargi area.

Pakistain's northwest and tribal areas have been wracked by violence, mostly targeting security officials, since hundreds of Taliban and al Qaeda gunnies sought refuge there after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

The military has claimed victory in a number of battles against thugs, perhaps most notably in 2009 in the Taliban's former headquarters of South Wazoo, but attacks have continued across the country.

Washington has said eliminating thug sanctuaries in Pakistain's tribal belt, particularly North Wazoo, is vital to winning the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan and defeating al Qaeda.

But General David Rodriguez, deputy US commander in Afghanistan, said Tuesday that US-led Nato forces can still win the war if Pakistain does not move against thug havens.

"We're going to encourage them to do more because that makes it easier on what we're doing. But I think it's still doable, without them decreasing what they've been doing, which is significant," he said.

Israeli planes hit Gaza tunnel, no casualties
GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories — The Israeli air force bombed a suspected smuggling tunnel on the Gaza-Egypt border on Wednesday in response to rocket attacks, the military said. No casualties were reported.

“The site was targeted in response to the recent rocket fire from the Gaza Strip,” a military statement said, referring to Grad rockets and mortar rounds fired from Gaza on Monday night, one of which exploded near a wedding in southern Israel, although nobody was injured.

Witnesses in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah said there were no casualties in the Israel air raid.

“Since the beginning of 2011, over 30 Grad missiles, Qassam rockets and mortar shells have landed in Israeli territory,” the military said, adding that it regarded Gaza’s Hamas rulers as responsible for all fire from the territory.

Five gunned down in shooting spree in southern Thailand
Terrorists Suspected insurgents opened fire on a Buddhist community in Pattani province early Thursday, killing five people and injuring four others. Among the dead is Pongsak Phetch, an education supervisor in the Pattani Educational Service Area Office.

Five attackers on a pickup truck drove into Khok Krabue village. Armed with machine guns and handguns, they shot at passers-by and villagers in their homes.

The police failed to locate the suspicious vehicle after the assault occurred amid a number of witnesses during a previously scheduled rotation of security volunteers and soldiers. This left no security personnel guarding the area when the assailants attacked and left.

In another incident, a rubber tapper, Abduloh Kabo, 49, had his head clubbed and his neck slashed while he drove his motorcycle home from a rubber plantation in Pattani province at 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

This occured after presumed terrorists insurgents burned tires and telephone booths at seven spots in Pattani on Wednesday night.

Abu Bakar Bashir charged with plotting terrorism
[Straits Times] PROSECUTORS have formally charged Indonesia's best-known radical holy man with planning terrorist attacks, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of death.

Abu Bakar Bashir,
... Leader of the Indonesian Mujahedeen Council and proprietor of the al-Mukmin madrassah in Ngruki. The spriritual head of Jemaah Islamiya, which he denies exists. Bashir was jugged and then released in the wake of the 2002 Bali bombings, which he blamed on a conspiracy among the U.S., Israel, and Australia ...
the 72-year-old spiritual head of the Al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah network, also was charged with helping fund a new terror cell in Aceh province and mobilising foot soldiers.

Prosecutors presented the indictment Wednesday to the South Jakarta District Court.

They said 138 witnesses will testify at the trial, which is expected to begin next week.

Militants linked to Jemaah Islamiyah have carried out a series of attacks in Indonesia that have killed more than 260 people in less than a decade.
