Afghanistan
Afghans accuse Pakistan over fresh border shelling
(AFP) - ASADABAD, Afghanistan -- Pak security forces have fired hundreds of rockets into Afghanistan in recent days, killing a child and forcing hundreds to flee their homes, Afghan officials said on Sunday.

Fazilullah Wahidy, governor of the northeastern province of Kunar where the shelling happened, told AFP: "The shells were fired directly from Pak military posts and garrisons on that side of the border." He said at least one boy was killed in the attacks.

Interior ministry front man Siddiq Siddiqui did not specify who was behind the cross-border shelling but added: "We call on Pakistain, whoever is behind the attacks, to prevent it immediately."

He said more than 340 rockets had been fired into Afghanistan over the past four days, mostly landing in villages and farmland in the province of Kunar. Two mosques and dozens of houses had been damaged while about 50 families had to flee their homes, Siddiqui added.

Cross-border shelling incidents frequently cause tension between Afghanistan and Pakistain.
The border area between the two countries is seen as highly dangerous and a sanctuary for bully boyz who launch attacks in Afghanistan. In June, Afghanistan warned that cross-border attacks could threaten "improving trust and cooperation" between the neighbours unless Pakistain addressed the issue. Pakistain denies any official involvement in the incidents.

The latest shelling came shortly after the United States called on Pakistain to "break any link they have" with bully boyz from the Haqqani jihad boy network in border districts. In response, Pak Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
... Pakistain's erstwhile current prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics can be awe-inspiring ...
rejected claims of Pak complicity with the Haqqanis and said that US policy on Afghanistan was in "disarray."

Sat Images: 'Massive' Sudanese Troop Build-Up
New satellite images appear to show thousands of Sudanese government troops marching toward a rebel stronghold in a contested region near South Sudan. The Satellite Sentinel Project and the Enough Project released the images Friday, saying at least 3,000 troops appear to be marching on Kurmuk in Blue Nile State.

Fighting along the border with South Sudan has been escalating since June, about a month before South Sudan split from the north and declared independence. Khartoum has repeatedly claimed that the South Sudanese military is supporting the rebels in the oil-rich border state, but Juba denies the charges.

US drone kills five Somali civilians
At least five civilians have been killed and more than 22 others injured as a US drone fires missiles on areas in southern Somalia, Press TV reports.
Given the questionable definition of civilian when jihadis are involved, the likelihood that personal weapons were dropped just before their status was reckoned, a hearty "Well done, O drone pilots!" should echo from the rafters.
The deadly attack took place on Saturday morning near the town of Dhobley. A similar strike left 11 dead and maimed 27 others on Friday.
And a second "Well done!" echoes yet again.
Somali army front man Mahamed Faraah Dirie said the drone strikes are part of operations the country's military is involved in to target al-Shabaab
... Harakat ash-Shabaab al-Mujahidin aka the Mujahideen Youth Movement. It was originally the youth movement of the Islamic Courts, now pretty much all of what's left of it. They are aligned with al-Qaeda but operate more like the Afghan or Pakistani Taliban. The organization's current leader is Ibrahim Haji Jama Mee'aad, also known as Ibrahim al-Afghani. Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, a Kenyan al-Qaeda member, is considered the group's military leader...
fighters. Dirie did not confirm any civilian casualties in Saturday's strike.

The front man added that dozens of helicopters are carrying out operations against the jihad boy group in various parts of southern Somalia.
And yet a third "Well done!" in anticipation of future strikes, of which we may or may not get reports. Happy hunting, guys!
The offensive comes as the hapless Somali government has pledged to flush out the faceless myrmidons using whatever means it can get, the front man said.

Thousands of people are fleeing their homes in fear of further attacks.
Removing oneself from the vicinity of obvious targets is a survival characteristic in a strongly contra-survival environment...or even in a normal environment, if one ponders the idea further.
Somalia has been without a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre. The Horn of African country has been paralyzed by violence between al-Shaboobs and government troops that are backed by African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
forces.

NTC Fighters Reach Sirte's Eastern Gate
[Tripoli Post] National Transitional Council, NTC, fighters continued the assault on the runaway leader Muammar Al Qadaffy's
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland...
hometown of Sirte and Saturday morning, after weeks of stalemate, pushed back the little resistance offered by pro-Al Qadaffy forces and reportedly gained control of the Mediterranean coastal city's eastern gate.

An anti-Al-Qadaffy troops commander, Ahmed Zlitni from the operations centre has confirmed the gains, telling AFP: "They are two kilometres ahead of the gate and holding positions there. Technically we can say that we entered Sirte from the east." He added that the fighters "did not face any resistance" when they crossed the gate.

The green flags of the former dictatorial regime were still flying when the NTC fighters advanced about 90 kilometres and reached the gates some 20 kilometres from the centre of Sirte, Al Jizz reported. This is a position that Al Qadaffy troops had held for months.

The green flag on the main gate was pulled down into the dirt to be replaced by the free Libya three-coloured flag, the Al Jizz news hound said. Soldiers' uniforms were found scattered around by the gate, discarded by the troops loyal to Al Qadaffy who had been holding the position for months.

Now the NTC has issued another ultimatum, saying that if the Al Qadaffy loyalists inside the city do not surrender by Saturday, there would be a push both from the east and the west.

They are demanding swift justice from the country's new leaders, otherwise, they said, they would take action themselves.

Earlier in the week the NTC fighters faced stiff resistance around six kilometres ahead of the town of Sultana, and in the past four days had been unable to push ahead. From early Thursday there was also a drop in fighting after they faced shortages of ammunition.

In another development, Al Qadaffy's daughter Ayesha who decamped Libya to Algeria and has decided to live in exile with her mother, two brothers and their siblings, added her voice to try and gather some support for her runaway father by saying in a recorded audio message Friday on Arrai TV that her father is in high spirits.

In her first public remarks since the fall of from power of her father a month ago, Ayesha said her father was fighting alongside his supporters against the revolutionary forces who swept his regime from power.
Leading from the rear, no doubt, as behooves his importance to the world as that rara avis, a philosopher-king. He wrote a book, you know.
She accused the country's new leaders of being traitors, noting that some of them were members of Al Qadaffy's regime before defecting in the civil war.

In her four-minute message she said: "Those who have betrayed the pledge they offered (to Al Qadaffy), how come they won't betray you?" she said in a warning to Libyans.

"I assure you, he is fine, a believer in God, in good spirits, is carrying his gun and is fighting side by side with the warriors," she said.

Echoing remarks her father has made to the same station, she called on the "lions" of Tripoli and other cities to rise up and fight the country's new rulers.

Meanwhile in Benghazi, Libyans loyal to the former Libyan general Abdel Fatah Younis who was killed, presumably by the same fighters he was leading, marched through the city of Benghazi claiming they are not satisfied with the NTC's investigation into his death.

NTC Forces, NATO Warplanes Launch All-Out Attack on Sirte
[Tripoli Post] The deposed leader Muammar Al Qadaffy's
...Custodian of Wheelus AFB for 42 long years...
loyalists inside the runaway leader's hometown of Sirte gave no sign they would heed the national Transitional Council's ultimatum to surrender Saturday soon after the anti-Al Qadaffy troops reached Sirte's eastern gate. Therefore the interim government's troops opened their attack in the city on the Mediterranean coast of the country.

While NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
warplanes roared overhead zoning in on Al Qadaffy loyalist positions, the columns of military vehicles belonging to the NTC fighters who were advancing further inside the city were advised to pull back some kilometres to allow the air strikes to do their job unhindered.

Journalists close to the NTC fighters could hear kabooms inside the town, which, along with the desert town of Bani Walid is the last remaining bastion supporting the deposed Libyan leader that appears to have loyalists still wanting to fight for the runaway leader, who despite his daughter's claim from Algeria, that he is fighting with his loyalists, is nowhere to be seen.

After making progress during the night and early morning to reach Sirte's eastern gate, as they had threatened, the former rebels launched their attack on the city of Sirte from both the east and the west, where gunners reportedly fired artillery towards the town.

Both opposing factions exchanged volleys of rockets and large plumes of black rose from inside the town, and there are fears that a lot of civilians who are being kept as hostages by the Al Qadaffy forces could end up victims of the conflict.

There have already been reports that the former leader's forces had blocked most of the roads inside the city order to keep the civilians from leaving the town and to use them as human shields.

Families coming from Misrata and living in Sirte have been the civilians worse hit as if to avenge for the defeat Al Qadaffy's men suffered when they had to surrender the town after months of fierce fighting.

Meanwhile,
...back at the scene of the crime, Lieutenant Queeg had an idea: there was a simple way to tell whether Manetti had been the triggerman -- just look at his shoes!...
a Libyan doctor by the name of Mabruk Kernaf has reportedly told AFP that in the campaign to capture Bani Walid southeast of the Libyan capital fighting has claimed the lives of 30 interim government fighters.

In the first overall toll given on NTC casualties since the start of fighting, the NTC's northern front commander also said that another 50 had been maimed.

AFP also reported that rockets were being fired by troops loyal to Al Qadaffy at an NTC position some five kilometres outside the desert city, 140km south-east of Tripoli.

Arabia
At Least 40 Killed in Yemen Unrest Saturday
[An Nahar] At least 40 people, among them dissident soldiers, were killed in violence that rocked Yemen's capital on Saturday, an activist from the protest organizing committee told AFP.

"More than 40 people were killed on Saturday" in battles that hit several neighborhoods across Sanaa, including Change Square, epicenter of anti-regime protests since February, the activist said.

As shootouts raged across the capital, hundreds of thousands set out in a massive demonstration from Change Square, which itself came under security force gunfire from several directions, witnesses said.

A dissident military front man said 11 of his regiment's troops were killed on Saturday and 112 maimed when elite Republican Guard troops, commanded by President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
's son Ahmed, attacked a camp of the First Armored Brigade north of Change Square.

"The camp was targeted by 60 shells," said the front man.

Fierce fighting between Yemeni security forces and dissident troops has rocked Sanaa since last week, killing 173 people.

Seventy-eight people have been killed since Saleh returned on Friday after three months in Soddy Arabia, despite his call for peace in the restive country.

Regime attacks Dissidents Troops
[Yemen Post] Not 24 hours have passed that already president Saleh is backing up on its promises of peaceful negotiations. Since the embattled president sneaked back into the country, he has neither been seen nor heard. Although his loyalists demonstrated their joy by lighting up the night sky with fire-works, many waited in vain for his speech, wondering even if he was truly in Sana'a.

His army however made itself heard last night as it continued its pounding of "Change Square" at the University and its attack on defected General Ali Mohsen's military base, north of the capital, Sana'a. Sheikh Sadeeq al-Ahmar, the powerful tribal leader of the Hasheed confederation of tribes and main opponent to the regime also ensued Saleh's wrath as the latter order his troops to unleash their heavy artilleries onto the district of Hasaba. As the hours of the night went by to the rhythm of heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual light or sporadic fighting...
, more civilians were being brought to the already overflowed hospitals, bearing horrific injuries. Residents in al-Zubeyri this morning reported fierce street battles as Elite Republican Guards were scrambling to regain control of the area.

Hospitals it seems were also being targeted by the regime, with medical staffs accusing snipers of targeting ambulances and staffs as they were helping the injured. So far an additional 19 people have died, bringing the corpse count to sickening new high of over 130 in less than a week.Entire areas of the capital have had their cellular communications completely cut off as well as the electricity.

The National Council for the Yemeni Revolution is calling today for more demonstrations as it said to be determined not to let fear prevent them from achieving their goal.

Nuevo Laredo newspaper editor decapitated
I knew people were upset about the new Facebook format but this is ridiculous.
Authorities have confirmed the murder of a Nuevo Laredo newspaper editor whose body decapitated and left with a message not to use social media to report about drug cartels.
Macias-Castro is the third person in Nuevo Laredo to be murdered and left with a message not to use blogs or social media to report about drug cartels.
Macias-Castro is also among three media professionals to have been killed in Nuevo Laredo in the past three years.
She was a courageous woman, may she RIP. And may our media eventually get inspired by her sacrifice to show some courage of their own.

Clashes in Lower Dir kills 15 militants
[Dawn] At least 15 forces of Evil were killed Saturday in a shootout with troops in a restive northwestern Pak district, security officials said.

The day-long gunbattle near Kharkai hills, in the Lower Dir district of the once Taliban-infested Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
Valley, started when troops were approaching a strategic peak to establish a post, a security bigshot told AFP.

"More than 15 forces of Evil were killed in a clash with security forces," the official said.

"One soldier was martyred and three others were maimed," he said. Another security official confirmed the fighting and casualties.

Last week a jacket wallah went kaboom!" in the same district as mourners gathered on open ground in Jandol town attending funeral prayers.

More than 4,600 people have been killed across Pakistain in attacks blamed on the Taliban and other cut-thoat networks based in the tribal belt since government troops stormed a radical mosque in Islamabad in 2007.

In 2009, 30,000 Pak troops went into battle against Taliban fighters who for two years had terrorised people with a campaign of beheadings, violence and attacks on girls' schools in Swat and parts of Dir.

The army declared the region back under control in July of that year and said the rebels had all been killed, captured or had decamped.

At least 10 militants killed in Orakzai raids
[Dawn] Pak warplanes killed 10 Orcs and similar vermin and destroyed three hideouts in raids in the northwestern Orakzai Agency,
... crawling with holy men, home to Darra Adam Khel, the world's largest illegal arms bazaar. 14 distinct tribes of beturbanned primitives inhabit Orakzai agency's 1500 or so square kilometers...
local government officials said.

There is no independent verification of the attacks and casualties, and Orcs and similar vermin often dispute official accounts.

Orakzai is one of the most lawless areas in Pakistain's northwest tribal region, which is made up of seven districts near the Afghan border.

Pakistain launched a major operation in Orakzai in March last year after Orcs and similar vermin fled a sweeping offensive in the nearby tribal district of South Wazoo.

Late last year military officials said lower Orakzai had been cleared, but the thug threat persisted in some pockets of the upper part of the area.

Saturday's attack came as Pakistain is under renewed pressure from the United States to go after the Haqqani network, which it says operates from sanctuaries in Pakistain's North Waziristan tribal region on the Afghan border.

Four LI men killed in Tirah blast
[Dawn] Four Islamic fascisti were killed in Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency on Thursday night after a time device fitted in their vehicle went off, an official in Bara administration said.
It was time. Their time. And there was nothing anyone could have done to change it.
The official said the dead were activists of banned orc outfit, Lashkar-i-Islam.

A local source in the outfit, however, didn't confirm the incident. No group grabbed credit for the blast.

Lashkar-i-Islam is at war with the Taliban and Zakhakhel tribal lashkar in Tirah Valley.

SUSPECTED MILITANT HELD: A suspected orc was locked away but another decamped after Dadiwala police exchanged fire with them in Wanda Gulapa village of Lakki Marwat on Friday.

A large cache of arms and ammunition was also seized, police said. They said on patrol, Abbasa checkpoint personnel led by ASI Ayyaz Khan spotted two suspected Islamic fascisti with Kalashnikovs in Wanda Gulapa village and began approaching them.

They said the two fired gunshots at coppers to prevent arrest but one of them, Hashim Khan, was held.

Police said the other suspected orc, however, decamped, adding that raids were being conducted for his arrest.

They said a Kalashnikov, two magazines and 25 bullets were recovered from the locked away suspect. They said a case had been registered against the two.

Israel Police Chief: 'Car Accident' Was Terror Attack
Israel Police Chief Yochanan Danino has confirmed that the victims of a tragic car crash Friday were murdered by terrorists, Channel 2 television reported Sunday afternoon. Previously, police stated that the crash was caused by driver error and was definitely not the result of an attack.
How many of these definitive 'not terrorism' statements ever get walked back? How many should?

The dramatic change in approach followed a meeting Saturday night on autopsy findings in the deaths of the two victims, 25-year-old Asher Palmer and his infant son Yehonatan.

Violence continues, death toll mounts in southern Thailand
Phamon Phonphanit, 61, a reporter for local newspaper Sue Samut Atyakam succumbed to severe burns sustained in the third explosion of a triple bombing while he was covering the attack. Phamon was pronounced dead at Yala Central Hospital.

Two car bombs and one motorcycle bomb exploded in Sungai Kolok on Sept 16, killing three Malaysians and one Thai and injuring at least 110 others. The fifth victim, another Malaysian, was pronounced dead last week.

Narathiwat provincial police have identified two suspects in the bomb attacks using footage from surveillance cameras. One of them was Suhaidee Kubaru, of Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district. The other was Muhammadsakri Saising.

Meanwhile, authorities interrogated two suspects about a bombing inside the Prachabamrung School compound in Rangae district on Friday. One soldier was wounded in the attack.

The two were apprehended as they drove past the school shortly after the bomb exploded. The suspects denied involvement, but they gave conflicting statements.

A 33-year-old man was seriously wounded in Narathiwat province after he was shot in his left arm and shoulder by suspected terrorists insurgents. The victim, Kudeng Rayeekae, was riding his motorcycle to his rubber plantation when he was attacked by two men on a motorcycle. The pillion rider fired a 9mm pistol at Mr Kudeng who was hit twice.

In another district, an armed man stormed a fresh market and killed two vendors and seriously wounded two others yesterday. The gunman approached a group of Buddhist vendors at the Muslim-dominated market and shot Wichai Suaphan, 50; an unidentified female vendor in her 70s; Wilailak Suaphan, 52, the wife of Wichai; and Phanni Arunrat, 67.

The gunman, who arrived on the back of a motorcycle, sped away after the attack. He was believed to be a close aide of a key figure of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) separatist movement named Maro Zo, police said.

Wichai and the female vendor died at the scene, while Mrs Wilailak and Mrs Phanni were wounded severely.

French Envoy Targeted with Eggs, Stones in Damascus
[An Nahar] La Belle France's envoy to Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
was attacked on Saturday by a crowd throwing stones and eggs at him after he met with Greek Orthodox Patriarch Ignace IV in the Syrian capital, he said.

Eric Chevallier had met with Ignace in the Christian quarter of Damascus's old city when young people and women began chanting slogans in support of Syrian President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators. Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor...
, and threw eggs and stones at the French delegation when the ambassador was going to his car.

"The Shabiha (a pro-regime militia), some of whom had metal bars in their hands, and women threw eggs and stones in my direction and in the direction of my team, and looked threateningly at us while we were returning to our two cars," Chevallier told Agence La Belle France Presse.

On Thursday, the French envoy visited four schools in Damascus and its surrounding suburbs to express his "deep concern" following reports that protests at those schools were repressed.

On Monday, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe accused the Syrian regime of "crimes against humanity" and criticized the U.N. Security Council for failing to take a strong stand on the unrest.

On September 13, Chevallier and his U.S. counterpart, Robert Ford, travelled to the Damascus district of Daraya to attend a condolence ceremony for slain Syrian activist Ghiyath Matar, who reportedly died under torture.

The office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva has said the corpse count from the crackdown on dissent in Syria since March 15 has risen to more than 2,700.

Damascus does not accept that popular opposition to the authorities exists, instead blaming "armed gangs" and "terrorists" for trying to sow chaos.
