foot patrol in a crowded city on Monday, killing at least 14 people, including three foreign troops and their interpreter, officials said.

Taliban forces of Evil grabbed credit for the attack near a market in the eastern city of Khost. Four Afghan police and six civilians were also killed, and 57 were maimed, local officials said.

"Today at around 8:30 am (0400 GMT) a suicide bomber on a cycle of violence targeted a joint patrol in Khost city in a crowded area.

"Six civilians and four police, including the commander of the quick reaction forces, were killed," the governor's office said in a statement, while the Interior Ministry said 57 people were maimed.

NATO's US-led International Security Assistance Force confirmed that three NATO service members and an ISAF-contracted interpreter had been killed in the attack.

The Taliban Islamists said on their website that the suicide kaboom was carried out by "a hero mujahid, Shohaib, from Kunduz", claiming that eight foreigners and six Afghan soldiers were killed.

Egypt Policeman Injured In Sinai Stabbing, Security Sources Say
[Ma'an] An Egyptian policeman was injured on Friday after being stabbed in the northern Sinai city of el-Arish, security sources said.

The assailant knifed the officer several times. Security officials said the officer was transferred to the city hospital.

They believe the attacker is affiliated to one of the Jihadi groups operating in the Sinai peninsula.

Egyptian security forces have waged a security campaign in the desert Sinai region to reign in hard boy groups, after 16 Egyptian border guards were killed in an attack on their post in August.

Bangladesh
166 detained in Chittagong, Cox's Bazar
[Bangla Daily Star] Law enforcers have so far tossed in the calaboose
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
166 people in connection with Saturday's violence at Ramu in Cox's Bazar that later spread in the port city.

Of the arrestees, 93 were picked up from Cox's Bazar and 73 from Chittagong, Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir yesterday told the media in the capital.

Sixteen cases -- 13 in Cox's Bazar and three with Patiya Police Staion -- have been filed so far against several thousand people in connection with the violence.

Dipananda Bhikkhu, priest of Kolagaon Sarbojanin Ratnangkur Buddha Bihar, which was set on fire on Sunday, lodged one of the cases with Patiya Police Station accusing 37 persons by name and around 500 unknown persons.

Of the cases in Cox's Bazar, six were lodged with Ramu, four with Ukhia, two with Teknaf and one with Sadar cop shoppes, Babul Akhter, additional superintendent of police in Cox's Bazar, told The Daily Star.

Law enforcers were reported to have been raiding different places in Cox's Bazar to detain more people involved in the sectarian attack.

State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Joint General Secretary of the ruling Awami League Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday visited Ramu Kendriya Shima Bihar in the afternoon. Bir Bahadur, politician from Bandarban, was also present with them.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was counting their remaining cannon balls and not liking the results...
Western Marine Shipyard remained closed yesterday following the arrest of its 25 sub-contractors in connection with Saturday night's violence.

During a visit yesterday, The Daily Star found the Buddhist community of four upazilas in Cox's Bazar district passing time in panic owing to the last two days' violence in the region.

Although Section 144 has been imposed and law enforcement agencies, including the army, have been patrolling the sensitive areas, local residents still seemed to be reeling from the violence.

On Saturday night, protestors attacked seven temples in Ramu. Some of these temples were damaged extensively.

Locals claimed that around 2,000 people participated in the attack and no police were there during the time. The protestors used gunpowder and petrol during the attack.

Maj Gen Sabbir Ahmed, general officer commanding (GOC) of Chittagong Cantonment, said the army had set up camp in the area. He said army troops would stay there until the situation calmed down completely.

Lutfor Rahman Kajol, BNP politician from Cox's Bazar-3 constituency, said he had asked police to arrest the man who carried a poster that was defaming the Koran during the rally at Ramu Chaumuhoni before the incident.

"But police did not arrest the person. Had they done it, the situation would not have gone so bad," he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout the long-awaited message arrived. They quickly got to work with their decoder rings...
agitated locals yesterday chased Nazibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ramu Police Station, when he went to visit the Shima Bihar around 3:30pm. The OC took shelter in a nearby house, from where police later had to rescue him.

Speakers at a rally in Chittagong yesterday protested the violence, saying the attackers had ruined the 300-year-old Buddhist temples and set fire to archaeological testimony of the country's opulent heritage. The speakers termed the attackers traitors and enemy to the culture and glory of the nation.

The rally, under the banner of "Sachetan Nagarik Samaj O Sarbastarer Sanskriti Karmi", was organised at Chittagong Press Club.

New bounty offer in Pakistan for anti-Islam filmmaker
[Dawn] A former Pak politician has offered a $200,000 bounty for anyone who kills the maker of a US-made anti-Islam film insulting the Holy Prophet and angering Moslems around the world.

Ikramullah Shahid made the offer at a rally Monday in the northwestern city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
, before a crowd of about 15,000 people.

The rally was led by the Difa-e-Pakistain Council (DPC), an umbrella organization of right-wing Islamic parties and jihadist outfits. Shahid is a member of the group.

This is the second such offer made by someone in Pakistain. Federal Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmed Bilour earlier offered $100,000 for the man behind the disrespectful film.

Outraged Moslems have rallied against the film. At least 23 people have died in protests in Pakistain against the film.

Bethlehem Man Arrested With Knife At Checkpoint
[Jerusalem Post] 26-year-old Arab man arrives at checkpoint wearing heavy coat, despite the high temperature; border police find concealed knife.
"It's Friday. I think I'll kill me a Joooo."
A 26-year-old Arab man was set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
on Friday afternoon for attempting to stab a policeman at the Hizma checkpoint.

The Bethlehem man had arrived at the checkpoint wearing a heavy coat, despite the high temperature. Friday was unseasonably hot with temperatures of 32 degrees in Jerusalem.
That's subtle. What odds all his relatives are first cousins?
When border police searched him, they found a large kitchen knife concealed in his coat.

During the initial questioning, he told police he wanted to stab a soldier.
"It's Friday, and I had nothing better to do."
One week ago, Jerusalem police set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
a 32-year-old Arab woman early on Sunday morning after she tried to stab a police officer outside the station on Sultan Suleiman Street.
She thought it was Friday. They measure time differently in the desert, you know.
The woman, a resident of the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, arrived at the Shalem cop shoppe located across from the Flowers Gate around 6:30 a.m.

The woman arrived outside the cop shoppe grasping a knife, raising the suspicions of the police officer making the rounds in a squad car, and then tried to enter the cop shoppe with the knife hidden in her clothes. One of the officers apprehended her and took the knife away before she could injure anyone.
"There, there, Little Mother. It will be Friday again, soon."
During the initial investigation, she told police she wanted to stab a policeman to protest the Innocence of Mohammedans film and the situation in the Paleostinian territories.

More Than 130 Dead in Syria amid Clashes in Aleppo Souk
[An Nahar] Army shelling and air raids killed dozens more civilians including children in Syrian flashpoints Monday, activists said, while rebels and loyalists fought close-quarter battles in Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
's main souk.

On the political front, Syria accused Washington of seeking to topple the Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
regime by raising fears over its chemical weapons stockpiles and creating a scenario similar to that which led to the invasion of Iraq.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said an air strike on the town of Salqeen in the mostly rebel-held province of Idlib bordering Turkey killed 21 people, including eight children.

The Britannia-based watchdog also said at least 18 soldiers were killed in Homs province of central Syria, in a rebel ambush and bombing of their convoy on the Damascus-Palmyra highway.

Meanwhile,
...back at the laboratory the fumes had dispersed, to reveal an ominous sight...
the Local Coordination Committees, a key activist group monitoring the situation on the ground, said regime forces killed 115 people across the country, among them women and kiddies.

The LCC said 36 people were killed in the northwestern province of Idlib, among them 30 in a "massacre," as 36 others were killed in the northern province of Aleppo, 25 in Damascus and its countryside, 13 in Daraa, three in Homs and two in Hama.

In a video released by activists from Salqeen, a number of the air strike victims are seen piled in the back of a pick-up truck, their bodies charred black with limbs torn off.

"My God, my son is dead," a man wails as he looks on at the bloody disfigured corpses, finally putting his hand over his eyes.

According to Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman, among the dead were three children from the same family.

In another video, the bodies of three small children, probably the same ones, are shown lying on a bedsheet with their faces bloody and mutilated. "These children are from one family," a man tells the activist filming.

The Observatory also reported regime shelling in the provinces of Hama, Daraa and Homs.

The group, which relies on its information from a network of activists and medics on the ground, gave an initial toll of 59 people -- 34 civilians, five rebels and 20 soldiers -- killed in violence across Syria on Monday.

An Agence La Belle France Presse correspondent in Aleppo, meanwhile, said rebels and regular soldiers traded fierce machinegun fire in and around the historic souk, which reverberated across the centuries-old UNESCO-listed covered market.

The fighting, which took place in an area of the souk facing Aleppo's ancient citadel, came after parts of the market were ravaged by a fire, sparked by fighting, on Friday night and Saturday.

Traders told AFP that the army had no presence inside the souk area, which has been infiltrated by rebels.

Because of the festivities, it has not yet been possible to evaluate the damage to the ancient site caused by the fire, which has dealt an economic blow to residents of Syria's second city and traditional commercial hub.

The regime and rebels exchanged blame for the weekend damage to the souk.

"Armed forces of Evil started the fire in order to cover up for their looting and theft in the market," Aleppo governor Wahid Akkad told an AFP journalist in the city.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
video posted on YouTube by activists showed rebel fighters trying to put out the fire with a water hose. "We are certain that it was regime fire that started the flames," an anti-regime citizen journalist told AFP.

As the fighting raged, Foreign Minister Muallem hit back at assertions by U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta
...current SecDef, previously Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Panetta served as President Bill Clinton's White House Chief of Staff from 1994 to 1997 and was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993....
on Friday that the Syrian regime had moved some chemical weapons to safeguard the material as it battles the rebels.

"This issue (chemical weapons) is an invention of the American administration," Muallem said in excerpts of an interview with Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV.

But Muallem remained vague on whether Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
's regime possesses chemical weapons, despite Damascus acknowledging in July that it has such stockpiles.

"These chemical weapons in Syria, if they exist -- and I emphasize if -- how is it possible that we would use them against our own people? It's a joke," he told the staunchly anti-American and anti-Israeli channel.

"It is a myth they invented to launch a campaign against Syria like they did in Iraq," he said in the interview given on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York.

A U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq in March 2003, accusing Saddam Hussein of possessing weapons of mass destruction. No such weapons were ever found.

NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
head Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday that Syria's chemical weapon stockpiles were a "great concern" but the solution to the conflict remained political, not military.

He told a briefing in Brussels that there were no discussions on military options as "the right way forward as regards Syria is a political solution."
