#2  Clean up on Aisle Two.

I realize posters are trying to be helpful, but posting "cleanup in aisle whatever" in the comments section is rather useless. It's not like it triggers an alarm in Moderator Central. If you guys want to help, please, please, please go to the O-Club and place the cleanup request there.

And, as always GB, thank you very much for adding a little bit of beauty and color to this world of ours. That girl does look good on bicycle.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
US sailor thwarts Dubai bus driver rapist
An off-duty US navy sailor wrestled a bus driver to the ground and beat him into submission after he attempted to rape her at knife point, a court heard yesterday.

Prosecutors said that she knocked the knife from his hand, broke it in two, bit him in the hand, forced him to the ground and locked him between her thighs.
He won't be saying "Hey, sailor" again after that.
The woman, 28, was on 24-hour shore leave in Dubai and was attacked as she returned to the port where she was based after a day shopping.

The driver, named as K S, from Pakistan, was arrested the next day at his home and the attending police officer said that he was intoxicated at the time.

The court ordered that the 21-year-old be examined to establish his age after he did not produce a birth certificate. He has been charged with attempted rape, threatening to kill, assault and consuming alcohol illegally.

Having confessed to the alcohol charge, the driver claims to have been too drunk to remember what happened.

Traces of the woman’s hair and blood were found on his bus.

Food, Water Reach War-Displaced in Sudan's Darfur
[An Nahar] Food, water and medical aid has reached thousands of people displaced by fighting in southern Darfur in Sudan, peacekeepers said on Wednesday, after the U.N. chief expressed concern

Almost 80 tonnes of "critical humanitarian aid" will assist needy civilians in Labado and Muhagiriya, said the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...

agencies.

"The first phase of the operation, conducted on April 23, consisted primarily of delivering food rations, bottled water and medical supplies," UNAMID said, adding that a second phase is planned.

An estimated 20,000 displaced people have gathered around UNAMID bases in Labado and Muhagiriya since rebels seized control of the area on April 6 and UNAMID reported "possible" air strikes.

The Sudanese army said it liberated the area on April 17 but two days later a peacekeeper died in an attack on UNAMID's base near Muhagiriya.

Clashes between police and Uighurs in China leave 21 dead
[LATIMES] In the deadliest ethnic violence in China since 2009, 21 people were killed in confrontations Tuesday between police and Uighur residents of Kashgar, the country's westernmost city.

Among the dead were 15 police and neighborhood security officers and six people that the state media described as "mobsters.''

Kashgar, which lies close to China's borders with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, has been a frequent site of violence between the dominant ethnic Han Chinese and the Uighurs, a Moslem minority. As is often the case, it was difficult to confirm details of the incident and the account offered up by authorities was vague.

Tianshan.com, a website run by the Chinese government, reported Wednesday that three neighborhood security officers tried to confiscate knives from a family in Bachu county, on the outskirts of Kashgar. The "mobsters" were hiding in the basement of a house and ambushed the officers, taking them hostage, the website reported. When police responded to the scene, a shootout broke out and the house was burned down.

The website said that 10 of the coppers killed were ethnic Uighurs themselves.

"A preliminary investigation showed the mobster gang were planning to launch terrorist activities,'' the report said.

Liu Hainjun, a graduate student from the village, said in a telephone interview that government officials were told to stay in their offices during the day for fear of attacks.

There are festivities often in the area between Chinese authorities and Uighur gangs. While Chinese frequently allege that the gangs are Islamic separatists, human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
activists say that the confrontations are often simply criminal cases.

Yet AFAIK no one in China, Russia, or International Community - Person or Org - is calling for "Knife/Ax Control" nor to take the same away from law-abiding Citizens.

What has seemingly kept protractive serial sprees in past from routinely recurring has been a combo of STRONG NEIGBORHOOD PRESENCE, COMMUNITY WATCH, + TECH-LED EVIDENCE COLLECTION + ANALYSIS.

#2  East Turkestan was essentially a Uighur land until the Communists 'colonized' it with Han people - the same as they did with Tibet (and we did with the Sioux, etc.) In general the Uighur were subjugated and forced to abandon their culture or be oppressed; though some took advantage of the opportunity and modernized, most were rather unhappy with the situation. Various resistance movements - semi-nationalist, nationist, or Islamist - have waxed and waned, but have all been unable to make much headway against the far more powerful Beijing government. And they won't either, because East Turkestan is home of very significant natural resources and Beijing is not concerned about being gentle and nice.

Four blasts kill 6 in Quetta; LJ claims responsibility
[Dawn] At least six people, including a Frontier Corps man, were killed and over 45 others injured in a suicide boom-mobile blast and three other kabooms that rocked the Balochistan

grabbed credit for the car kaboom. A front man for the group, Abubakar Siddiq, called local news hounds and said it had carried out the attack.

The Hazara Democratic Party's chairman, Abdul Khaliq Hazara, had a narrow escape as he was passing through the area after addressing an election corner meeting when the blast took place.

"A jacket wallah riding a boom-mobile detonated the vehicle in Nichari area when a soldier of the Frontier Corps stopped it and started searching it," Col Maqbool of the FC told Dawn.

The soldier was killed in the powerful kaboom, he added.

Police said the bomber was driving the car towards Alamdar Road, probably to carry out an attack on members of the Hazara community, but he detonated the vehicle when the FC soldier flagged it down.

"As a result of powerful kaboom that was heard across the city, six people, including the FC man, were killed and 37 others, four children among them, were maimed," Quetta police chief Mir Zubair Mehmood said.

A majority of people in the Alamdar and Marriabad areas belong to the Hazara Shia community. Over 100 people were killed on Jan 10 in a suicide kaboom reportedly carried out through an ambulance at a snooker club on Alamdar Road.

Mr Zubair said investigation was under way to ascertain how the car bomb had reached the area despite tight security arrangements.

The kaboom damaged more than 10 houses and shops. "The election office of Sehr Gul, a candidate of the PML-Nawaz, is also in the same area," police said.

The FC post was also damaged.

Police and FC personnel took the bodies and the injured to the Sandeman Civil Hospital and the Combined Military Hospital.

"The FC soldier and two other people were killed on the spot and three others died in the CMH," police said.

Hospital sources said at least 10 injured people were in a critical condition.

According to the bomb disposal squad, 80-100kgs of explosives had been used in the kaboom.

Earlier in the day, three kabooms were reported in Jinnah Town, Gwalmandi and Gordat Singh Road areas.

Five people were maimed in Gwalmandi and one on the Gordat Singh Road.

Police said improvised bombs had been used in the three blasts. Rescue teams rushed to the places and took the injured to hospitals. Some of the severely injured were referred to the CMH.

Law enforcement personnel cordoned off various areas and launched a search operation after the attacks.

Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi and Chief Minister Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Barozai condemned the blasts.

The caretaker chief minister also visited the CMH and inquired after the health of the injured.

He announced that the provincial government would bear the expenditure on their treatment.

Iraq
Iraq on edge after raid fuels deadly Sunni unrest
[Al Ahram] Gun battles between protestors and Iraqi forces killed more than 20 people on Wednesday after a raid on a Sunni Moslem protest camp a day before ignited the fiercest festivities since U.S. troops left.

On Tuesday, troops stormed a camp where Sunni Moslems have protested for months against what they see as their marginalisation under the Shi'ite-led government, a raid that prompted hardline Sunni tribal leaders to call for revolt.

More than 50 people were killed in ensuing festivities, which spread beyond the town of Hawija near Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
170 km (100 miles) north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, to other areas, reviving worries of a return to widespread intercommunal violence.

Sporadic battles continued on Wednesday and hardline tribal leaders warned that protests could turn into open rebellion.

Fighters briefly took over a cop shoppe and an army base and burned a small Shi'ite mosque in Sulaiman Pek, 160 km (100 miles) north of Storied Baghdad, before army helicopters drove gunnies out of the town.

At least 18 were killed, including 10 gunnies and five soldiers, officials said.

An ambush on an army convoy near Tikrit with roadside kabooms and rocket-propelled grenades killed three more soldiers.

A surge in Sunni bully boy unrest has accompanied growing turmoil among the Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish parties that make up Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's power-sharing government.

Gunmen take control of Iraqi town after clashes
Gunmen seized control late Wednesday of Suleiman Beik, a town north of Baghdad, hours after clashes erupted with Iraqi troops in the region, Al Jazeera reported. Iraqi security forces have completely withdrawn from the town, which is now under the control of gunmen who belong to tribes in the area, the Qatari news television Al Jazeera said without elaborating, DPA reported.

At least five soldiers were killed earlier in the fighting in Suleiman Beik, some 170 kilometres north of the capital Baghdad, according to Shalal Abdul, a local police chief.

"A number of insurgents have also been killed and injured in the clashes, but their specific number is not known yet," he told the independent broadcaster Alsumaria TV. The identity of the gunmen remains unclear.

Meanwhile, a car bomb exploded late Wednesday in Al-Husseiniyah east of the Iraqi capital, killing at least eight people and wounding 21 others, the Iraqi News Agency reported. The bomb was planted in a car park near a mobile phone market in Al-Husseiniyah.

The violence comes a day after at least 53 people were killed and 110 were injured in clashes that followed the army's crackdown on Sunni protesters in the town of Heweja, near the oil-rich northern city of Kirkuk. The clampdown has further infuriated Iraq's Sunni minority against the Shiite-led government.

Hundreds of mourners Wednesday attended a funeral for the people killed in Heweja amid heavy security.

"This is a real massacre," said Sheikh Abdullah Sami, a Sunni member of the Kirkuk local council. "Our young people were treacherously killed ... We want their killers to be punished."

The army said gunmen had infiltrated the anti-government protesters in Heweja.

Israel 'shoots down Lebanon drone'
Israel says one of its fighter jets has shot down an unmanned aircraft sent from Lebanon into Israeli airspace. A missile brought down the drone about five miles (8km) west of the northern Israeli port of Haifa around 14:00 (11:00 GMT), officials said.

Reports suggest the drone could have been sent by Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which fought a month-long war against Israel in 2006.

It is the second time in seven months Israel has downed a drone from Lebanon. Last October, the Israeli air force shot down an unmanned aircraft over the south of the country.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the incident as an "extremely grave" attempt to breach Israel's borders.

"We will continue to do whatever it takes to protect the security of Israel's citizens," he said.

Mr Netanyahu was on his way to the north of Israel in a helicopter when the incident happened. His aircraft landed briefly until the Lebanese plane was shot down. He recently warned that Hezbollah might try to take advantage of the instability in neighbouring Syria.

Minaret of Aleppo's Umayyad mosque destroyed
[Al Ahram] The minaret of Aleppo's ancient Umayyad mosque was destroyed on Wednesday, Syrian state media and a watchdog reported, with the regime and the opposition blaming each other.

An archaeological treasure in Aleppo's UNESCO-listed Old City, the mosque has been the centre of fighting for months and had already suffered extensive damage.

With beturbanned goons and the regime caught in a stalemate in the key northern city, the ancient mosque has fallen in and out of rebel hands several times.

The Umayyad mosque was originally built in the 8th century but was apparently destroyed and then rebuilt in the 13th century.

It has recently fallen back into rebel hands, but has been left pockmarked by bullets and stained with soot.

Antique furnishings and intricately sculpted colonnades have been charred, valuable Islamic relics ransacked and ancient artefacts -- including a box purported to contain a strand of the Prophet Mohammed's hair -- looted.

Rebels say they have managed to salvage ancient handwritten Koranic manuscripts and have hidden them.

On Wednesday, as reports broke of the minaret's destruction, activists uploaded video shot at the scene, but there was no video immediately available showing the moment of the blast that caused the collapse.

Grenade Explodes at Palestinian Camp in North, 11 Wounded
[An Nahar] Eleven people, including eight children, were maimed at a Paleostinian refugee camp in northern Leb on Wednesday when a shell left over from battles between the army and Orcs and similar vermin went kaboom!, the National News Agency reported.

NNA said the kaboom went off near Jabal Tabour school at the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp, leaving eight children and three teachers maimed.

They were taken to al-Kheir hospital in Minieh, the agency added.

Later on Wednesday, the army issued a statement saying that "a BTU rifle-fired grenade went kaboom! at the old Nahr al-Bared camp while a group of boys were toying with it, leaving 11 Syrian nationals maimed."

"An army patrol arrived on the scene while a military expert was called in to the blast's site and Military Police launched an investigation under the supervision of the relevant judicial authorities," the statement added.

Assad's forces recapture strategic town of Otaiba
[Al Ahram] Syrian forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Terror of Aleppo ...
seized a strategic town east of Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
on Wednesday, breaking a critical weapons supply route for the rebels, activists and fighters said.

Rebels have held several suburbs ringing the southern and eastern parts Damascus for months, but they have been struggling to maintain their positions against a ground offensive backed by fierce army shelling and air strikes in recent weeks.

"The disaster has struck, the army entered Otaiba. The regime has managed to turn off the weapons tap," a fighter from the town told Rooters via Skype.

"The price of a bullet will go from 50 Syrian pounds to 1,000 Syrian pounds ($10) now, but we must pay and retake it. It's the main if not the only route."

Rebels said they pulled out of Otaiba, a gateway to the eastern rural suburbs of Damascus known as al-Ghouta, in the early hours after more than 37 days of fighting in which they accused the government of using chemical weapons against them twice.

The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and other private donors are believed to be sending in arms.
