Libya Gunmen Press Siege of Ministries
[An Nahar] Gunmen pressed their siege of two Libyan ministries on Wednesday, leaving the authorities in a dilemma of whether to risk a bloody confrontation or reinforce the image of a helpless state by negotiating patiently.

They have encircled the foreign ministry since Sunday and the justice ministry since Tuesday, demanding the sacking of former officials from the ousted regime of Muammar Qadaffy
... one of those little rainstorms from the Arab Spring...
The same groups, most of them former rebels who fought to oust Qadaffy in 2011, briefly occupied the finance ministry on Monday.

On Sunday, former rebels who had once been responsible for security at the headquarters of Libyan national television, blockaded it although broadcasts were not interrupted.

And angry coppers invaded the interior ministry twice, on Monday and Tuesday, to demand higher pay and promotions.

On Wednesday, vehicles equipped with anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers blockaded the foreign and justice ministries as traffic flowed smoothly on the May Day holiday.

"The siege of the foreign and justice ministries is continuing and will go on until our demands are completely satisfied," Aymen Mohammed Abudeina, a member of a group committed to ensuring the exclusion of former Qadaffy officials from public life, told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The justice ministry has dismissed the idea of using force to break the siege, saying the government preferred to "let wisdom prevail."

The government regularly promises firmness against these militias, and a campaign was recently launched to dislodge them from several public and private properties.

But the authorities avoid any use of force despite repeated attacks against state institutions by former rebels.

50+ Salafi jihadists clash with Tunisian police close to Algerian border
[Al Ahram] Tunisian troops clashed on Wednesday with around 50 armed jihadists in the remote Mount Chaambi border region, a security source said, the first such operation since the revolution in January 2011.

"The group consists of more than 50 Salafi jihadists," the source told AFP, adding that they were well armed and some were veteran Islamist bully boyz who had come from northern Mali.

An AFP journalist nearby reported hearing an exchange of gunfire in the area, close to Tunisia's border with Algeria, which was surrounded by soldiers and patrolled by helicopters.

The group is commanded by an Algerian and two Tunisians originally from the regional capital, Kasserine, the security source said.

On Monday, Tunisian forces began their hunt for the group holed up in the mountainous region. Authorities simply described them as "terrorists," refusing to give any further details because the operation was ongoing.

The gunnies laid homemade land mines in parts of the region which have already maimed around 10 soldiers and members of the national guard, some seriously, during the operation to flush them out.

The group originally consisted of 11 fighters for whom the Tunisian security forces have been searching since December, when they attacked the Bou Chebka border post and killed a member of the national guard.

"They then recruited some youths from Kasserine and men who had come from Mali," said the security source, without explaining how he got the information.

"Yesterday (Tuesday) we found grenades, military and homemade bombs, documents on how to make homemade bombs, coded documents, maps and mobile phones being used to make calls abroad," he added.

Unlike earlier in the week, Wednesday's operations were being carried out by the army, which has the only units capable of detecting land mines. The national guard, or auxiliary police, are playing a secondary role.

Bassem Haj Yahia, a guard who lost a leg after one of the bombs went kaboom!, said the army was facing an organised and well-armed adversary.

"It's like they are installed in a small village where they have their hideouts, a training site and some equipment," he told private radio station Mosaique FM.

The standoff in Mount Chaambi is the worst of its kind since festivities in 2007 between the army and Islamists in Soliman, near Tunis, under Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. A soldier, two policeman and 11 Islamists died.

Britain
Controlled explosion at Gatwick parking lot
[CNN] Authorities on Wednesday carried out a controlled kaboom on a suspicious vehicle parked at London's Gatwick Airport, a front man for Sussex police said.

An area around the Renault van in a short-term parking lot was cordoned off while police tried to determine whether the vehicle posed any threat to travelers.

"There is no suggestion that there are any other threats to the airport and both police and security staff are actively checking all areas," the front man said.

The Press Association of England said police grew more concerned when they couldn't get a complete view of what was inside the van.

A spokeswoman for the airport said all flights were operating normally.

"No passengers are being allowed into that car park and passengers have been asked to go to South Terminal and are being transported by bus to the North to check-in," Heather Griffiths said.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
3 policemen shot dead in Russia's restive Dagestan
[Pak Daily Times] Three coppers were killed and two more injured when gunnies opened fire on their cars in Russia's restive region of Dagestan
...a formerly inoffensive Caucasus republic currently bedevilled by low-level Islamic insurgency, occasional outbreaks of separatism, ethnic tensions and terrorism, primarily due to its proximity to Chechnya. There are several dozen ethnic groups, most of which speak either Caucasian, Turkic, or Iranian languages. Largest among these ethnic groups are the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, Lezgin, and Laks. While Russers form less than five percent of the population, Russian remains the primary official language and the lingua franca...
, Sherlocks said Wednesday.

A police major and two other officers were killed on Tuesday evening while driving through Buinaksk, a city about 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the capital of Dagestan, Makhachkala, in Russia's North Caucasus. "Unidentified persons ... opened automatic gunfire" at the two cars the coppers were travelling in, said a statement on the Investigative Committee website. "Two more coppers were taken to the hospital with various wounds," the statement said.

Dagestan, the most populous and ethnically diverse region of the mountainous North Caucasus in southern Russia has become the most unstable in recent years, with rebels staging attacks against the pro-Kremlin local authorities on a nearly daily basis.

region Wednesday when they opened a box left on the street that contained an bomb, police said.

The kaboom occurred around midday in a busy shopping area of main Dagestani city of Makhachkala, said a spokeswoman of the Dagestan interior ministry.

"Two people, teenagers, have died, and two people have been hospitalised," she told AFP.

Russian agencies quoted police sources as saying that the victims, aged 15-16, opened a box standing on the pavement outside a store, and apparently set off the bomb, which had two kilogrammes of TNT equivalent.

Television footage showed the street with broken windows where the bomb went off surrounded by police cars and camouflaged officers with search dogs.

#1  SSDD in Dagestan.
From Reuters 21 Apr 2013:
Dagestan is the focal point of the insurgency in the North Caucasus where militants wage almost daily violence to establish an Islamist state.

Residents of the city of half a million are so used to the violence that they are surprised by what they see as the fuss over the Boston bombings.

"What's there to say? We're used to this. There are bomb blasts and rebels everywhere," said Galia Sulemanan, 55, a housewife buying bread in Abdulayeva's grocery store. "Young people do this for money."

The Caucasian Knot website, which monitors the violence, says 124 people were killed and 75 wounded in the first three months of his year in predominantly Muslim Russian provinces that stretch almost from the Caspian to the Black Sea, and include Dagestan and Chechnya.

"Such things (as in Boston) are always upsetting but you know this happens every day here. We're surprised by the huge reaction," said Magomed, a young man in a black leather jacket who declined to give his full name.

"Americans think they are some kind of 'super people', like their lives are more important than others'; They're the world's police. We have enough of our own problems to worry about it."

Insurgents from the North Caucasus have carried out attacks outside the region - including on Moscow's subway and at the main international airport of Domodedovo, where 37 people were killed in a bombing in January 2011 - but not on U.S. soil.

Many people in the region have long focused their ire on Moscow and Kremlin-backed local leaders, not on the United States, although there are clear signs of irritation in the region about some American attitudes.

"They blew up three people in the United States and people are up in arms. When they (Americans) kill 150, 200 people in Afghanistan, Iraq - why do they react differently?" asked Vagib Devletkhanov, 24, a soldier in the Russian army.

#2  "Americans think they are some kind of 'super people', like their lives are more important than others'; They're the world's police. We have enough of our own problems to worry about it."

Both a universally held perception, as well as the hint of a solution. I hope our reluctance to get involved in Syria heralds a new trend. Let them slaughter one another as they must. Should they attack or harm us.... say nothing, but quietly bomb them into extinction. Then again.... say nothing.

Attempted Poisoning At Starbucks
A woman arrested after she allegedly tried to sneak tainted bottles of orange juice into a refrigerator at a Starbucks coffee shop in San Jose was a trained chemist, officials said.

A customer reported seeing the woman remove two bottles of orange juice from her purse and place them in a refrigerated display case at the store, the Mercury News reported.

When the customer alerted store staff the woman fled.

After examining the bottles and detecting what they described as a “toxic smell,” store employees called 911.

Police tracked 50-year-old Ramineh Behbehanian to her home about five miles away after a witness provided her license plate number. She was arrested on suspicion of felony poisoning.

Tests revealed she had mixed rubbing alcohol with the juice, police said. Investigators said they did not have a motive.

Authorities told the San Francisco Chronicle that she used a "lethal quantity" of the rubbing alcohol. The paper also reported she held graduate degrees in chemistry from Lehigh University.

'It's time to end terror menace'
[HINDUSTANTIMES] If there was any doubt where the Pakistain Army stood with regards to the May general elections, army chief General Kayani
... four star general, current Chief of Army Staff of the Mighty Pak Army. Kayani is the former Director General of ISI...
cleared this on Tuesday evening when he addressed participants at the Youm-e-Shuhuda event in Rawalpindi. The event, held every year to remember the country's military deaders, gave Kayani a chance to chide those who have been speaking in favor of the Taliban like PTI's Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
and PML-N's Mian Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
. Both leaders advocate dialogue with the bad boy group.

"The menace of terrorism and extremism has claimed thousands of lives, including those of the army, and the innocent people of Pakistain," said Kayani, adding that despite all this bloodshed, certain quarters still want to remain embroiled in the debate concerning the causes of this war and who imposed it on Pakistain.

"I would like to ask all those who raise such questions that if a small faction wants to enforce its distorted ideology over the entire nation, then does the fight against this enemy of the state constitute someone else's war" he argued.

Kayani's remarks also come at a time when the Taliban has issued a threat to three major political parties -- the Pakistain Peoples Party, the Awami National Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
, for pursuing a secular agenda. The TTP has said that it will continue to attack the political rallies of these parties. Kayani said that the army would not tolerate these attacks.

Four Anti-Qaida Fighters among 8 Killed by Iraq Bombs
[An Nahar] Two kabooms in Iraq on Wednesday killed eight people, including four anti-Qaeda gunnies who died when a jacket wallah struck as they gathered to collect their salaries, officials said.

The bomber, who was on foot, detonated explosives at a cop shoppe in Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
west of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, as the militiamen, known as Sahwa, gathered near a cop shoppe, police Lieutenant Colonel Khaled Yassir al-Jumaili said.

The blast killed five people, including a police brass hat and four Sahwa fighters. It also maimed 15 other people.

In a separate attack in Storied Baghdad, a boom-mobile in the capital's Al-Husseiniyah area killed three people and maimed another 10, officials said.

Wednesday's attacks came after a wave of violence killed more than 240 people over seven days at the end of April, raising fears of a return to sectarian violence that left tens of thousands dead.

#1  Texican Rattlesnake logic:

Now the news media will spend days trying to determine why these men did what they did in Boston. They will want to know what America did to make these brothers so angry with us. They will want to know why these men were not arrested before they did something unlawful. The media will be in a tizzy about the new era of home grown radicals and about how they could live among us and still hate us.

Here in west Texas, I have rattlesnakes on my place. I have killed a rattlesnake on the front porch. I have killed a rattlesnake on the back porch. I have killed rattlesnakes in the barn, in the shop and on the driveway. I kill every rattlesnake I encounter. I kill rattlesnakes because a rattlesnake will bite me and inflict me with poison. I don't stop to wonder why a rattlesnake will bite me.

It will bite me because it is a rattlesnake and that is what rattlesnakes do. I don't try to reason with a rattlesnake...I just kill it. I don't try to get to know the rattlesnake better so that I can find a way to live with the rattlesnakes and convince them not to bite me...I just kill them. I don't quiz a rattlesnake to see if I can find out where the other snakes are because (a) it won't tell me (b) I already know that they live on my place...I just kill the rattlesnake and move on to the next one. I don't look for ways that I might be able to change the rattlesnake to a non-poisonous rat snake. I just kill it. Oh, and on occasion I kill a rat snake, because I thought it was a rattlesnake at the time. Also, I know that for every rattlesnake that I kill, two more lurk out there. In my lifetime I will never be able to rid my place of rattlesnakes. Do I fear them? No! Do I respect what they can do to me? Yes! And because of that respect I give them their fair justice....I kill them. Maybe as a country we should give more thought to the jihadist just being a rattlesnake!

#5  I came home one time and saw a crowd(30) Of Cats in a circle with a brown lump in the center, I thought "Oh no, a cat's been killed, probably run over by the power company Truck" but when I got closer it was a Rattlesnake, and surrounded (Custer's last stand, Dammit, where'd all those Indians((Cats)) Come from.)

He was coiled, but not to strike, his head was UNDER his tsil, and if he could have stopped Rattling, he'd be OK, But the Rattling attracted the Cats.

He was a Rattlesnake so I killed him (Cut his head off with a shovel) and buried the head where the Cats wouldn't get it.

Last I saw, three Cats were playing tug-of-war with his carcass(Headless, but still moving,) I never saw a scrap of Snake at all after that.

Good riddance. 8 rattles and a button.

And yes, I don't like snakes at all.

Six people brutally gunned down in southern Thailand
Six people, including a one-year-old baby, were killed and another seriously injured in a gun attack carried out by four armed men on motorcycles in Pattani province last night.

The attackers, who were on two motorcycles, sprayed bullets at a grocery shop in Muang district after 8 p.m. Bullets hit seven people who were inside and in front of the shop. Six of them died instantly and one was seriously injured. After the initial attack, gunmen walked into the shop and shot the victims in the head one by one.

The shooting took place just 200 meters from a checkpoint jointly manned by soldiers and defense volunteers.

The brutal attack came just days after officials led by the National Security Council (NSC) held a second round of talks in Kuala Lumpur with terrorist insurgent groups in the deep South. The NSC agreed to give the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) until June 13, when the next talks will be held, to prove they can control the terrorists rebels.

Meanwhile, a conference of armed forces leaders has rejected five demands recently issued by the BRN. The meeting, also attended by army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha, touched on armed forces operations in the deep South. A source said everyone present at the meeting decided that "not a single demand was acceptable".

Emerging from the meeting, ACM Sukumpol dismissed the BRN's demand for the unconditional release of all detained suspects and the suspension and revocation of all arrest warrants concerning national security cases. He said, "A release, I think, is too much to ask."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian government reclaims parts of Homs
Syrian troops took control of large swaths of territory in the flashpoint city of Homs Thursday, encircling an opposition suburb, an activist group said.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces retook the Wadi al-Sayah neighborhood, giving the troops direct access to the Old District of Homs, an opposition stronghold, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"Rebels in Wadi al-Sayah are fighting to stop the government troops from entering the Old District of Homs and are helping 200 families flee the area toward the Old District, "activist Abu Bilal told CNN.

Eight hundred families and nearly 500 wounded people in the Old District now fear for their lives and many worry they will become victims of reprisal attacks and even sectarian killings, the Revolutionary Council of Homs said.

#1  Perhaps it was nothing more than a stray round fired from blocks away. There are a lot of those flying around. Had it been a professional hit, using a sound suppression device, they would have likely not missed. Give up your street view, first floor office. Move upstairs, and down the hall.

Two Bombs Rock Damascus
[An Nahar] Two bombs in central Damascus
...The capital of Iran's Syrian satrapy...
killed one person and maimed several others on Wednesday, a monitoring group said, a day after another bombing killed 13 people in the Syrian capital.

One bomb detonated near a cop shoppe on the Khaled bin al-Walid main road, killing one, and the second went off in Bab al-Musalla square, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

State news agency SANA said the blasts maimed 15 people, saying the bombs were planted by "terrorists", the term the regime uses for rebels trying to topple it.

Several blasts have already targeted Khaled bin al-Walid road.

On Tuesday, a bomb destroyed the Damascus district of Marjeh, killing 13 people. A day earlier, Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi survived a boom-mobileing in an upscale area of the capital.
