I enjoy the way Christina models her draperies, and no, I do not see over engineering as a problem here. I think she needs a little extra support for her "bits and pieces"

And wow, what bits and pieces she has to display!

Afghanistan
Taliban Bomb Kills Eight Afghan Police
[An Nahar] A Taliban bomb killed eight Afghan police Thursday in Logar province outside the capital Kabul, officials said, four days after the insurgents started their annual "spring offensive".

The members of the Afghan Local Police (ALP) force were on a joint patrol with NATO-led coalition forces near Puli Alam town when the blast was detonated.

"One of the police vehicles hit an IED (improvised explosive device) in which eight local police were killed and their pick-up truck was totally destroyed," Rais Khan Sadeq, Logar provincial deputy police chief, told Agence France Presse.

Din Mohammad Darvish, the provincial spokesman, confirmed the incident and the death toll. "Eight local police are killed in a Taliban bomb," he said.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, told AFP the insurgent group was responsible for the attack. "A big number of police are dead and a big number of them are wounded," he said, without giving details.

Founded in 2010, the ALP is a controversial unit tasked with community-level policing to suppress violence in some of the country's most dangerous areas.

It was designed as a homegrown force of locals ready to take on Taliban hardliners in places where the national police and army were scarce, but is often criticized as indisciplined and poorly-trained.

The Taliban vowed their annual spring offensive would target international airbases and diplomatic buildings with multiple suicide bombings, as well as featuring "insider attacks" by Afghan soldiers and "special military tactics".

No large-scale attacks have yet been launched, but three British soldiers fighting in the NATO-led coalition were killed by a roadside bomb in the southern province of Helmand on Tuesday.

Shah Wali Khan, the head of the High Peace Council in Helmand, was also killed in a similar attack in the province on Wednesday.

More than a decade after the Taliban government was ousted in 2001, Afghanistan remains in the grip of a violent insurgency with militants launching daily strikes on government officials, police and international and Afghan soldiers.

Afghanistan's inexperienced security forces are taking over responsibility for fighting the Taliban, but fears are growing that the country could tip into civil war after NATO military operations cease at the end of next year.

Kenya Finds Iranians Guilty of Possessing Explosives
[An Nahar] Two Iranians were found guilty by a Kenyan court Thursday for possessing explosives allegedly for use in kabooms.

Ahmed Mohammed and Sayed Mansour, who were incarcerated
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
last June, were found guilty of possessing 15 kilos (33 pounds) of the powerful explosive RDX. The court said they had suspected links to a terror network planning bombings in Mombasa and Nairobi.

The men, who have both denied all charges, are said to have hidden the explosives in the port city of Mombasa. They face up to 15 years in jail.

"I have no doubt in my mind that they were part of the group that placed explosives there," judge Kiarie Wa Kiarie told the court in the capital Nairobi.

The court is expected to sentence the men on Monday.

Defense lawyers alleged the suspects were interrogated by Israeli security officers while in Kenyan detention, claims dismissed by the prosecution.

The accusation followed a declaration by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who shortly after the two were charged, said Iran was plotting attacks against Israel in Kenya.

3 al Qaeda operatives took part in Benghazi attack
Several Yemeni men belonging to al Qaeda took part in the terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi last September, according to several sources who have spoken with CNN. One senior U.S. law enforcement official told CNN that "three or four members of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula," or AQAP, took part in the attack.
This isn't surprising. The whole Benghazi movement against the Duck of Death was infiltrated early on by AQIM, and after Qadaffi was deposed the AQ types worked hard to grab weapons and cash. Lots of folks in eastern Lybia were sympathetic to them, and indeed Libyans have always been plentiful in AQ operations.
Another source briefed on the Benghazi investigation said Western intelligence services suspect the men may have been sent by the group specifically to carry out the attack. But it's not been ruled out that they were already in the city and participated as the opportunity arose.

According to one source, counterterrorism officials learned the identity of the men and established they had spent two nights in Benghazi after the attack. Western intelligence agencies began trying to track the men in the aftermath of the terrorist attack, but were always behind in their manhunt. They were later traced to northern Mali, where they are believed to have connected with a fighting group commanded by Moktar Belmoktar, a prominent jihadist leader, according to a senior law enforcement source.

The trail appears to have then gone cold. In early 2013, jihadists were driven out of many areas of northern Mali in a French-led offensive.

Another source briefed on the investigation had previously told CNN that Belmoktar had received a call in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack from someone in or close to the city. Whoever made the call was excited.

"Mabruk, Mabruk!" he repeated, meaning "Congratulations" in Arabic.

There is no proof the call was specifically about the attack, but the source says that is the assumption among those with knowledge of the call. One source says the phone call was discovered when a Western intelligence service trawled through intercepts of communications made in the wake of the attack.

CIA officials told CNN they had no comment on whether any call had been intercepted.

One other source briefed by Western intelligence told CNN a call was intercepted but said only that it was placed to an AQIM commander, not specifically Belmoktar.

Belmoktar is an Algerian terrorist operative linked to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb who claimed responsibility for the attack on the In Amenas gas facility in southern Algeria in January this year. Chadian troops supporting the French intervention in Mali claimed in March that Belmoktar and others in his group had been killed during an operation in the remote Adrar des Ifhogas mountain range.
We wanted the severed head at the time for precisely this reason...
There has never been any confirmation of his death, and one source briefed by Western and regional intelligence officials told CNN that Belmoktar may have started operating in the "desert triangle" straddling the borders of Algeria, Niger and Libya.

Belmoktar is believed to have moved to the region in late 2012 after signs that an international intervention in Mali was growing more likely. Known as 'the Salvador pass,' the area is a key transit points for drug traffickers and international criminal groups.

Bomb destroys police station in Libya's Benghazi
[Al Ahram] A bomb destroyed a cop shoppe in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi early on Thursday but caused no casualties, a security source told AFP, in a second attack targeting the building.

"An bomb was thrown at Al-Baraka cop shoppe in Benghazi, destroying what remained of the building after the kaboom that targeted it last weekend," the source said.

"The kaboom caused no casualties," he added.

An AFP journalist at the scene confirmed that the blast destroyed the building at around 7:00 am (0500 GMT).

A wave of liquidations and bombings has swept Benghazi, the cradle of the 2011 uprising against Moamer Qadaffy, in recent months.

Thursday's attack came after several weeks of relative calm in the city, where the authorities have struggled to re-establish security.

Attacks in Benghazi have generally been attributed to radical Islamists, most notably last year's September 11 assault on the US consulate that killed four Americans including ambassador Chris Stevens.

"However, a space launch does not test a re-entry vehicle (RV), without which North Korea cannot deliver a weapon to target from an ICBM," the report said, apparently a caveat to the classified assessment made public last month.

Tamerlan called wifey after kaboom
Authorities are hoping to find new clues in the Boston Marathon bombing case by learning what his brother, Tamerlan, told his wife, Katherine Russell, in a phone call days after the blast, ABC News reported.
The site shows a mug shot of Ms. Russell that is dated (if you drag the photo to your desktop) from 2007. Wonder what happened back then?
A law enforcement official also told ABC News Thursday that the FBI is seeking to find out what Tamerlan Tsarnaev told his wife in a phone call shortly after the FBI released his photo to the public three days after the attack. The official said only that Russell knows the content of the conversation.

Russell's attorney said in a statement Tuesday that she was providing "as much assistance to the investigation as she can."

MQM office bombed as pre-poll violence spikes
[Pak Daily Times] At least eight people were maimed in a low-intensity kaboom at a sector office of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
(MQM), on Thursday night.

According to the details, the blast took place near the MQM's sector office located near Fresco Chowk, Burns Road. As a result at least eight people were maimed, while walls of nearby houses and a mosque were damaged. Following the blast MQM's workers, law enforcement agencies, rescue teams and experts of the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) rushed to the spot. The victims were immediately shifted to the Civil Hospital by the volunteers and rescuers, where doctors termed condition of one of the victims as critical. Law enforcement agencies had also cordoned off the area to avoid any untoward incident.

The BDS officials and investigation teams of police, Rangers and FIA started examining the blast side. DIG South Ameer Sheikh said that the bomb was placed at the ablution place of the mosque and weighed around one and a half kilogrammes. It contained nuts, bolts and ball bearings. The BDS experts confirmed that around two kilogrammes of explosive was used in the improvised bomb (IED).

"The blast maimed at least five people," senior local police official Ameer Sheikh told AFP. He said the bomb was planted in the ablution room of a mosque close to the MQM office. Another local police official, Imran Shaukat, confirmed the incident. ...back at the alley, Slats grabbed his rosco...
three kabooms took place in Quetta and Khuzdar while rockets were fired in Kohlu and Panjgour districts, on Thursday. According to police, a blast occurred at Qambarani Road in Sariab locality of Quetta, however, no loss of life or damage to property was reported. Hundreds in Pakistan Pay Tribute to Bin Laden
[An Nahar] Hundreds of Islamists rallied in Pakistain's southwestern city of Quetta Thursday to pay tribute to al-Qaeda chief the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now neither a strong horse nor a weak horse, but a dead horse...
on the second anniversary of his death.

Organized by a pro-Taliban faction of Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability...
(JUI), headed by Maulvi Ismatullah, some 450 participants at the rally chanted: "Long live Islamic jehad and long live Mulla Omar!" an Agence La Belle France Presse news hound at the scene said.

Many of them were also carrying portraits of bin Laden.

The JUI's central secretary for information, Maulana Abdul Sattar Chisti, paid tributes to bin Laden.

"We are observing death anniversary of an Islamic hero, who was killed by American and Pak agents," he said.

"Bin Laden's martyrdom gave a new impetus to jehad against forces inimical to Islam," he added.

Sarabjit Singh dies in Pak Jail
[Bangla Daily Star] An Indian man on death row in Pakistain for spying died yesterday nearly a week after he was attacked by fellow prisoners, pushing the fraught India-Pakistain equation to a new low.
...and everybody was just so surprised...
Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced 16 years ago over deadly bombings, died in the early hours as a result of the savage assault in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail, a senior doctor at Jinnah hospital in the eastern city told AFP.

The 49-year-old went into a coma after suffering numerous serious injuries when six prisoners attacked him on April 26, hitting him on the head with bricks and fracturing his skull.

"The criminals responsible for the barbaric and murderous attack on Sarabjit Singh must be brought to justice," Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on his official Twitter page.

India complained that its diplomats were denied access to the prisoner as he fought for his life, and the premier said it was "particularly regrettable" that Pakistain had not responded to appeals "to take a humanitarian view of this case".

The body of Sarabjit Singh was brought to Amritsar onboard a special Air India aircraft from Lahore later after the post-mortem on his body.

Meanwhile,
...back at the hoedown, the fiddler suddenly struck a sour note. The dancing stopped abruptly. Everyone looked at Bob...
India's main opposition party BJP demanded that India call back its high commissioner in Pakistain and scale down diplomatic relations with Islamabad.

BJP president Rajnath Singh told news hounds in Delhi that Sarabjit's murder could have been prevented if India had taken effective diplomatic steps in the past.

Narendra Modi, a big shot in India's opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, termed Sabarjit's death as an extrajudicial killing in an election rally in southern Mangalore.

There were angry protests in Singh's native Bhikhiwind village in northern Punjab state, where Pakistain flags were burned. Protests and vigils were also reported in other parts of the country including the capital New Delhi.

Pakistain insists regular consular access was granted to Singh and said doctors did everything possible to save him before his death from cardiac arrest.

Iraq
14 killed in two separate attacks in Iraq
At least 14 people have been killed and dozens injured in two separate terrorist attacks in Iraq, security sources say.

Nine Iraqi police were killed and seven others were injured in clashes with armed militants in the northern city of Mosul on Friday.

Five people were also killed after a car bomb exploded outside a Sunni mosque in Rashidiyah, north of Baghdad, as worshippers left the mosque following the Friday Prayers.

Thirteen people were also injured in the attack. Sunnis and Shias have both recently been the target of terrorist attacks in Iraq.

The attacks come a day after the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said that April 2013 was Iraq's deadliest month since June 2008, with a total of 712 people killed and 1,633 wounded in bomb attacks and other forms of violence.

Almost 600 of the victims are reported to be civilians and the rest were members of Iraqi security forces.

Bomb explosion at Iraq mosque kills 7
A bomb attack outside a Sunni mosque on Friday killed seven worshippers as Sunnis continued to hold demonstrations in Iraq to protest what they say is second-class treatment by the Shiite-led government.

Sunni mosques have been targeted in several recent attacks amid rising sectarian tension in Iraq following a deadly crackdown by security forces on a Sunni protest site in Hawija town last month. Since then, violence have been on the upswing, raising concerns that the nation is on a return to bloody fighting in the past decade that approached a state of civil war.

Police officials said the attack on the Sunni mosque occurred as worshippers were leaving mid-day prayers at al-Ghofran mosque in a primarily Sunni area of Rashidiya.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Al-Qaida's Iraqi branch, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, often attacks civilian targets, including mosques. It primarily targets Shiites as well as security forces. In the past, it has also struck Sunni targets in an attempt to re-ignite sectarian fighting. Shiite militias in the past also targeted Sunnis as sectarian fighting in 2006-2007, but they are not known to have carried out large-scale bombing attacks against Sunnis for years.

First Clashes in Syria's Banias and Dozens Reportedly Killed
[An Nahar] Fierce festivities between troops and rebels erupted on Thursday for the first time in a Sunni Mohammedan village in the Alawite-majority coastal region of Banias in northwestern Syria, a watchdog said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting broke out in the morning and killed at least seven soldiers, while the official SANA news agency reported that troops killed "terrorists" -- the regime's term for bully boys.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio had his hands full of angry bleached blonde...
activists later said that the Syrian regime's army has killed more than 50 people in the village of Bayda at the southern entrance to the town of Banias, pointing out that the corpse count is expected to exceed 100.

"Since this morning, the army and pro-regime forces have been besieging Bayda," said the Britannia-based Observatory.

"The village is the scene of fierce fighting between the army and rebel battalions -- the first of its kind in the Banias area," it said.

The watchdog, which relies on activists and medics on the ground for its information, gave a preliminary toll of "at least seven soldiers killed and 20 others maimed."

SANA, quoting an unnamed top official, said regime forces "killed forces of Evil in Bayda and the village of Mirqab, as well as in the (Sunni) district of Ras al-Nabah," in the port of Banias

According to the Observatory, the troops and the shabiha (pro-regime militiamen) carried out "summary executions" in Bayda, and warned of a new "massacre" in Syria.

"The army has cut off all communications with the village and it is very difficult to get a precise toll," Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The Banias region is predominantly Alawite, an offshoot of Shiite Islam and the sect of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Trampler of Homs...
, but has several Sunni villages to the south.

In the south of the port city, where there is also a large Sunni population, "sustained gunfire coming from the army was heard, and the security services are out in the streets to terrify residents," the watchdog said.

Witnesses have seen "ambulances taking soldiers maimed in the fighting to Bayda," it added.

The Observatory said most young Sunnis left the Banias area after an army offensive in May 2011, two months after the start of the uprising against the Assad regime.

"They left because they were afraid of being tossed in the slammer
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
or forced to join the army," Abdel Rahman said.

Banias, along with Daraa in the south, the cradle of the uprising, saw some of the first demonstrations against the regime in March 2011.

The region's three main coastal cities of Banias, Latakia and Tartus and their surrounding areas form the "Alawite heartland" where analysts say Assad could seek refuge if his regime falls.

Official Sources Deny Reports about Syrian Army Entering Masharii al-Qaa
[An Nahar] Members of the Syrian regime's army entered the Bekaa region of Masharii al-Qaa, threatening to bomb the houses in the area, MTV reported on Thursday.

"Residents of al-Jura town (in Masharii al-Qaa) said that 70 members of the Syrian army have entered the region and asked people to evacuate their houses," MTV elaborated.

"The army members revealed that they wanted to bomb these residences to prevent using them in military operations against them."

Future television added that al-Jura's residents have started evacuating their houses.

However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
the state-run National News Agency later on Thursday pointed out that reports about the Syrian regime's army entering and threatening Lebanese towns are not true.

LBCI television reported earlier on Thursday that the Syrian army has taken over the eastern mountain of al-Joussieh town that overlooks Masharii al-Qaa.

Fierce festivities are still taking place in al-Qusayr's countryside region near the Lebanese border between the Syrian army and Hizbullah fighters on one hand, and the opposition's rebels on the other.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had announced that Iranian and Hizbullah officers are supervising the Syrian army's operations in Homs.

Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah acknowledged on Tuesday his party's participation in the neighboring country's war, explaining that this stems from its belief in helping the Lebanese in al-Qusayr "who are vulnerable to attacks by gunnies."

Watchdog: Syrian Forces, Hizbullah Tighten Noose on Homs Rebels
[An Nahar] Regime forces were on Thursday tightening the noose on rebels holed up in a key area of the central city of Homs, the Syrian Observatory for Human rights watchdog said.

"The Syrian army, supported by back-up forces and expert officers from Iran and Hizbullah, has taken control of large parts of the Wadi al-Sayeh district" in the center of Homs, the group said in a statement.

The neighborhood is half way between the Khaldiyeh district and the Old City, two rebel-held areas that have been under siege by the army for nearly a year.

"Taking Wadi al-Sayeh would enable the army to isolate those two districts" by severing links between them, said the Britannia-based Observatory which relies on a network of activists and medical staff on the ground for its information.

"In the Old City 800 families have been under siege for nearly a year, and hundreds have been maimed. If (Sunni-majority) Old Homs is taken, sectarian Dire Revenge™ attacks could take place" by pro-regime forces, it said.

Homs, the third largest city in the country, has been dubbed by the opposition Syrian National Council as the "beating heart of the revolution."

It was one of the first cities to join the revolt against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
's regime that began two years ago with peaceful protests but morphed into a bloody insurgency after a fierce crackdown on dissent.

Homs is divided along sectarian lines into Sunni, Alawite, Christian and ostensibly mixed quarters.

The regime is led by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, while Syria's population is majority Sunni, as are the rebels.

In the Observatory statement, its chief Rami Abdel Rahman said officers from Iran and Hizbullah were directing the army's operations in Homs.

Hizbullah has already said that members of the group have been fighting in the Qusayr region in Homs province.

On April 17, Assad said his regime's defeat is not an option.

"There is no option but victory. Otherwise it will be the end of Syria, and I don't think that the Syrian people will accept such an option," he told state television

"One police officer is severely injured and the other six were mildly hurt," the mayor added.

ISF: Mastermind Behind Abduction of Estonians Arrested, Had al-Qaida links
[An Nahar] The Internal Security Forces revealed that it nabbed
Please don't kill me!
the criminal mastermind who plotted the kidnapping of the seven Estonians in 2011 at the behest of al-Qaeda cadre in Iraq, the ISF General Directorate said on Thursday.

In a communique the Directorate said: "on the backdrop of the kidnapping of the seven Estonians in the Bekaa region on 23/03/2011, investigations led to the arrest of the criminal mastermind, Lebanese H.H. Born in 1983 (in reference to Hussein al-Hujairi) who plotted the kidnapping on the behest of al-Qaeda cadre in Iraq."

A special unit from the ISF Intelligence Branch tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
al-Hujairi in the outskirts of Arsal and Ras Baalbek in the eastern Bekaa valley after luring him to the area.

Al-Hujairi's record is full of law-breaking crimes as he gave orders to kidnap other foreigners after the release of the Estonians in return for a ransom, the communique added.

Efforts to bring al-Hujairi into custody were ongoing since the incident took place. And he was able to escape the efforts of the Intelligence Branch on 10/09/2011 where he was spotted in Arsal and engaged in a shooting spree. Hujairi was able to flee into the Syrian territories with some wounds.

He is also a suspect in the killing of Sergeant Elias Nasrallah whose patrol came under fire by gunnies at the Jlala bridge-Chtaura in the Western Bekaa in September the same year, the statement said.

Information have also revealed that he is involved in the kidnapping of three BBC journalists and transferring them to Syria where they were later released.

The detained is also wanted for the murder of Information Branch Sgt. Maj. Rashed Sabri, reports say.

The seven Estonians were freed in July 2011, almost four months after being kidnapped by gunnies as they entered the country on a bicycle tour from neighboring Syria.

Five Wounded in IED Explosion in Ain el-Hilweh
[An Nahar] Al least five people were maimed when an improvised bomb detonated in Ein el-Hellhole camp near the southern city of Sidon, the state-run National News Agency reported on Thursday.

"The kaboom took place in the Fawqani street in the camp's al-Manshieh neighborhood," the NNA detailed.

It added: "The maimed were transferred to Sidon's hospitals and the camp's health centers for treatment."

"Calm has been restored in Ein el-Hellhole after the kaboom."

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats Chumbaloni was staring into a hole that was just .45 inch in diameter and was less than three feet from his face ...
LBCI television had said that seven people were maimed when the IED detonated, noting that the camp's Security Committee convened following the incident.

By long-standing convention, the Lebanese army does not enter the country's 12 refugee camps, leaving security inside to the Paleostinians themselves.
