Gunmen storm Egyptian security post in Sinai Peninsula
[Ynet] Gunmen stormed an Egyptian security forces base in the Sinai Peninsula at dawn on Monday and exchanged gunfire with forces inside the base before retreating, security sources said.

The gunnies attacked the base in the Al-Ahrash area in North Sinai from a truck and fired automatic weapons, but the attack did not result in any casualties. The identity of the attackers was not immediately clear, but security sources said they were likely to be Islamist bully boys.

Two Wounded as Gunmen Attack Libya Gas Site
[Naharnet] Armed men on Monday attacked Mellitah gas complex in western Libya, wounding a soldier and a leader of the brigade which guards the complex, the official Lana news agency reported.

"An gang attacked at dawn the Mellitah gas complex wounding the commander of the brigade responsible for the security of the plant and a soldier," it quoted a military source as saying.

The source said the attack did not disrupt gas production at the complex managed by Mellitah Oil and Gas, a company owned by Italian energy major ENI and Libyan National Oil Company.

In March, the complex was the scene of festivities between two former rebel groups from two cities in western Libya in charge of security at the installation. The festivities interrupted gas exports for several days.

The military source said that Monday's attack was carried out by one of the two groups.

"The necessary steps were taken by the (military) staff who ordered the air force to track down the attackers," Lana reported.

The complex, located around 100 kilometers (about 60 miles) from Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, supplies Italia with 17 million cubic meters of gas per day through the Green Stream pipeline.

Nigeria Says It Has Retaken Five Islamist Strongholds
[Naharnet] Nigeria's military said Monday it had re-established control in five remote areas of the northeast where Islamist snuffies had seized territory, as it pressed on with a sweeping offensive against Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Death Eaters.

Several thousand troops were last week deployed across three states in the volatile region, and fighter jets have pounded Boko Haram camps as the military tries to rid the country of "terrorist activities."

The military has "secured the environs of New Marte, Hausari, Krenoa, Wulgo and Chikun Ngulalo after destroying all the terrorists' camps," a defense ministry statement said.

All of the areas recaptured in northern Borno state near the Cameroon border were considered Boko Haram strongholds.

President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
sent his troops in after declaring a state of emergency in Borno and two neighboring states of Yobe and Adamawa.

He said Boko Haram -- whose shifting demands include the creation of an Islamic state in Nigeria's mainly Musselmen north -- had chased out local officials in some areas and removed the Nigerian flag.

Residents in New Marte and Krenoa have told Agence La Belle France Presse they were among the areas targeted by military air strikes.

"The troops are already interacting with locals and citizens assuring them of their safety and freedom from the activities of myrmidons," the statement added.

The military said that 120 suspected snuffies were placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
while organizing the funeral of one of their leaders in Maiduguri, who had "died in an encounter with special forces the previous day."

The arrested suspects are being interrogated by the military, said the statement, adding that troops had also blocked snuffies trying to flee towards neighboring Chad and Niger.

Sources in Cameroon said thousands of Nigerians fleeing the fighting had crossed the border in recent days.

"Since Nigeria declared the state of emergency, they have been coming here," a Cameroonian security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

An AFP news hound in the village of Seram, barely a mile from the Nigerian border, saw several hundred Nigerian civilians who had set up camp.

Aly Doukar, a Nigerian driver from the village of Woulgo, said his home was deserted when he returned from work last week.

"When I inquired, I heard the army had been there and fired shots in the air. I was told my family had fled to Cameroon. This is why I am here, I've come to bring them back," he said.

The remote, thinly populated region of northern Nigeria has mostly non-existent borders where criminal groups and weapons have flowed freely for years, and the army has deployed troops to seal border crossings.

The military on Saturday imposed a round-the-clock curfew in 12 Maiduguri neighborhoods considered Boko Haram strongholds.

There is a risk of high civilian casualties, with Nigerian military having been accused of massive rights abuses in the past.

The Boko Haram conflict is estimated to have cost 3,600 lives since 2009, including killings by the security services.

Arabia
Drone strikes kill Yemeni al-Qaeda militants
U.S. drone strikes are up and at it again in Yemen, continuing to target al-Qaeda-linked terrorists operating in the region. Reuters reports that al-Qaeda militants continue to operate in the southern areas.

Two al-Qaeda militants were killed Monday in a drone strike by the U.S. government south of the capital city Sana’a. This past Saturday, up to four militants were killed in a different part of southern Yemen.

The U.S. government does not discuss their drone strikes and this policy is under fire in the U.S., but not by the liberal media which stays silent.

The Yemeni branch of al-Qaeda, called al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and is considered the most dangerous branch of the international Islamist terrorist group. The group, according to Reuters, has exploited Arab Spring to take parts of Yemen in 2011 and put it under their control. Yemen’s geopolitical position along major oil shipping routes make it an important part of most industrialized economies and their foreign policy.

Dagestan bombing kills four, injures 44
At least four people were killed and 44 were wounded after two bombs exploded Monday in the North Caucasus region, Russia's Ministry of Health's website says.

The incident, which occurred in Dagestan's capital Makhachkala, caused significant damage. Security officials say they believe law enforcement officers may have been targeted because the explosion occurred outside a local marshal's building.

One car bomb was discovered by a police patrol, who called in a unit to defuse it. Before they could do that, the bomb went off, but the explosion was minor. After a crowd of people had gathered, a second, more powerful device detonated, causing the casualties.

Russia has been on edge over terrorist militant activity and its security forces announced on Monday that they foiled a terror attack planned for Moscow.

A National Anti-Terror Committee spokesman said security forces killed two terrorists militants and detained another. All three were described as Russian citizens trained in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Security forces conducted their operation in the Orekhovo-Zuevo region of the Moscow suburbs.

Iraq
Wave Of Attacks Kills At Least 95 In Iraq
[Ynet] A wave of attacks killed at least 95 people in Shiite and Sunni areas of Iraq on Monday, officials said, pushing the corpse count over the past week to more than 240 and extending one of the most sustained bouts of sectarian violence the country has seen in years.

The worst of Monday's violence took place in Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, where 10 boom-mobiles destroyed open-air markets and other areas of Shiite neighborhoods, killing at least 48 people and wounding more than 150, police officials said.

Bombings Kill 13 at Iraq Shiite Mosques
[Naharnet] Bombings at two Shiite mosques south of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
killed 13 people on Monday, police and a doctor said, the latest in a string of attacks targeting both Sunni and Shiite places of worship in Iraq.

One bomb went kaboom! inside Al-Wardiyah mosque in the city of Hilla, while a jacket wallah detonated an explosives-rigged belt at Al-Graita mosque nearby, the sources said.

Both blasts, which also maimed another 71 people, occurred during evening prayers.

The United States condemned the bombing of two Shiite mosques in Iraq, appealing for calm amid a mounting wave of sectarian attacks.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said "we strongly condemn" the latest attacks, which left 13 people dead in a Shiite area south of Storied Baghdad.

Dozens of Sunni and Shiite mosques have been targets of such attacks in Iraq this year.

In one of the deadliest attacks, two bombs went kaboom! near the Sunni Saria mosque in Baquba, north of Storied Baghdad, after prayers on Friday.

One device blew up as worshipers were leaving, and the second went off after people gathered at the scene of the first blast, killing a total of 41 people.

Those bombings came after a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged belt on Thursday at the entrance to Al-Zahraa husseiniyah, killing 12 people.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki called for joint Shiite-Sunni prayers on Fridays in a major Storied Baghdad mosque.

"Those who target mosques are enemies of Sunnis and Shiites alike, and are planning to ignite (sectarian) strife," he said in a statement and on Monday he said he will overhaul Iraq's security strategy.

Tensions are festering between the government of Maliki, a Shiite, and Sunnis who accuse authorities of marginalizing and targeting their community through wrongful detentions and accusations of involvement in terrorism.

Protests broke out in Sunni areas of Iraq almost five months ago.

While the government has made some concessions, freeing prisoners and raising the salaries of Sunni anti-al-Qaeda gunnies, the underlying issues have not been addressed.

Car Bomb Kills 12 in Shiite Area of Baghdad, another Targets Iran Pilgrims
[Naharnet] A boom-mobile near a market in a Shiite-majority area of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
killed 12 people and maimed at least 20 on Monday, a police officer and a medical official said.

The bombing in the Shaab area of north Storied Baghdad brings the two-day corpse count from violence in Iraq to 63.

The boom-mobileing came minutes after Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki vowed to overhaul the country's security strategy, amid a wave of violence that has killed 340 people so far in May.

Later on Monday, another boom-mobile went kaboom! near a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims north of Storied Baghdad, killing eight people, police and a local official said.

The bombing also maimed at least 15 people, the officials said.

The pilgrims were on their way to a Shiite shrine in Samarra, which was bombed in February 2006, unleashing a wave of sectarian bloodletting in which tens of thousands of people died.

Violence in Iraq has fallen from its peak in 2006 and 2007 but attacks are still common, with more than 200 people killed in each of the first five months of this year.

Communist rebels raid Philippine village
Dozens of communist rebels disguised as Philippine troops raided a village in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur Sunday morning and took weapons issued by the military to local militias.

Police said some 40 New People’s Army guerillas also seized communication equipment from village chieftain Reynaldo Villaver in Camp Blessing. The rebels, armed with M14, M16 and Ak-47, fled after the raid.

It is not yet known why police failed to detect the presence of rebels – who spent 45 minutes in the area – before fleeing on foot.

Thai police have six suspects in hotel bombing
Police believe six men, including two already questioned and relaesed, were involved in Saturday's hotel bomb blast in Narathiwat. The explosion on the third floor of the Asia Hotel in Sungai Kolok injured six people.

After the explosion, police rounded up Sulaiman Yapa and Tameesi Jeyor, both from Narathiwat province. The pair, who had stayed at the hotel the previous night, were seen on surveillance video rushing out of the hotel shortly before the blast. The suspects told police they had hurried out of the hotel to catch a bus. The pair were released later on Saturday after police took their fingerprints and DNA samples.

Four other men, who had checked into rooms close to the explosion, were also taken in for questioning yesterday. Narathiwat governor Aphinan Suethanuwong said authorities believe all six men were involved in the blast.

Meanwhile, police found and safely detonated a bomb under the surface of a rural road in Pattani province yesterday morning.

Syrian Army fires across border into Israel to retaliate for airstrikes
Israel and Syria traded fire across their border today in the third such incident in a week. Although Israel has not taken sides in Syria's civil war, it has been explicit that it is willing to take drastic measures to ensure that, amid Syria's chaos, advanced weapons do not drift unnoticed into the hands of the anti-Israel militant group and Damascus-ally Hezbollah.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was "preparing for every scenario" and that "we will act to ensure the security interest of Israel's citizens in the future as well," Reuters reports. The Israeli military confirmed today that their soldiers "returned precise fire" after Syria fired on Israeli troops in the Golan Heights, former Syrian territory that Israel annexed after the 1967 war.

The Times of Israel reports that the Syrian Army stated that its troops "destroyed" an Israeli military vehicle, along with those in it, but that the Israel Defense Forces spokesman's office reported that a vehicle was "hit by light weapons fire, causing slight damage to the vehicle." It was the first time that the Syrian Army acknowledged firing across the border into Israel since the outbreak of civil war.

Armed Group Abducts Opposition Leader in Syria's Raqa
[Naharnet] An opposition leader, rights activist and longtime dissident in Syria's rebel-held city of Raqa has been kidnapped, a watchdog said Monday.

"The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has learned of the abduction by an gang of lawyer, human rights

activist and head of Raqa city's (opposition) local council Abdallah al-Khalil," the Britannia-based group said.

"The Observatory condemns in the strongest terms the abduction of opposition lawyer Abdallah al-Khalil, and demands his immediate release," it said.

Khalil was kidnapped as he left the local council's headquarters in Raqa Sunday morning, added the watchdog, which relies on a broad network of activists, doctors and lawyers for its reports.

Syrian regime troops have not been inside the city since March this year, when Raqa became the first and only bustling provincial capital to fall to rebel hands since the uprising against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

broke out more than two years ago.

The local council led by Khalil have worked with rebel groups and campaigned for the return of civilian life, despite frequent aerial attacks by the air force.

Khalil has been kidnapped before, telling Human Rights Watch

researchers last month that he was held by security forces less than two months into the anti-Assad uprising.

He was transferred to 17 different security branches while in detention, HRW said.

Rights groups say tens of thousands of people are missing or in detention in Syria.

Two Soldiers Killed as Army Seeks to Contain Tripoli Clashes
[Naharnet] Two soldiers were killed in the neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
on Monday as the army sought to implement a security plan to contain the festivities in the northern city, a statement released by the Army Command announced.

"Ali Shhade and Omar al-Hajj Omar were killed and 6 others were maimed after they came under gunfire from gangs in Tripoli," the statement said, explaining that this took place when the army was implementing security measures to restore stability in northern areas witnessing conflicts.

"Army bases in Mallouleh and Bab al-Tabbaneh came under fire from gunnies."

The military institution warned against the persisting attacks against civilians and against targeting army bases, assuring that it will firmly respond to the sources of fire.

"We call on the citizens to cooperate with the army's measures as they are taken to insure their safety and stability in the city," the Army Command stated.

The death of the two soldiers brings the toll in the second day of fighting in Tripoli to four, the other two being civilians.

LBCI said that the army's efforts to storm the areas witnessing festivities were met with resistance in some areas, resulting in the casualties.

The deaths prompted residents in the city to block roads in protest against the gunnies's targeting of the army.

Some fighters are refusing to abide by the army's orders to lay down their arms in a measure that is seen as an attempt to maintain tensions in the city, it added.

The army has consequently been opening fire against any gunshots directed against it, it continued.

Moreover, it said that sniper activity has been reported at the Mallouleh bridge in Tripoli, warning that the area is not safe for citizens.

Earlier on Monday, OTV reported that a unit from the Third Rapid Intervention Regiment has entered Bab al-Tabbaneh and the rival Jabal Mohsen neighborhood.

Arab Democratic Party media officer Abdul Latif Saleh told NBN television that the battle is taking place between the army and "the Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
s whom he has nothing to do with it."

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati had held talks on Monday with caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn to discuss the security measures taken to contain the unrest in Tripoli.

He also telephoned Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji to that end.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, Gloria slowly backed away from the eight-foot bull frog. If the creature croaked she would surely be deafened...
a closed-door meeting was held at MP Mohammed Kabbara's residence in Tripoli, in the presence of Minister Ahmed Karami and Minister Mohammed Safadi's representative Ahmed Safadi.

Kabbara stressed during the meeting with Tripoli's dignitaries that he has asked the parties to pacify the situation and let the army do its job, LBCI said.

In a statement issued after the meeting and recited by Kabbara, the conferees stressed that "the army is performing the duty of restoring security with the needed firmness and fairness, under the law and in the face of all parties."

They also underlined the need to "restore law and order across Tripoli," rejecting "any use of weapons against the legitimate armed forces" and urging residents to fully cooperate with security forces to "safeguard their security and foil the conspiracies that are being plotted against them and the city."

The cautious calm that engulfed Tripoli early Monday morning was shattered around noon by rocket attacks in addition to sniper fire that maimed three people.

The gunbattles between rival neighborhoods - the majority Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, whose residents are from the Alawite sect of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
- left on Sunday two people dead and at least 26 injured, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said two soldiers and a member of the Internal Security Forces were among the maimed in the fighting.

On Monday, the army carried out patrols and responded to the sources of fire to prevent further festivities.

The Defense Ministry froze the issuing of gun licenses in Tripoli until further notice and the military court tasked military police to carry out the preliminary investigation into the fighting.

Several schools that lie far from the scene of fighting were open while the rest of educational institutions nearby remained closed, the news agency said.

Traffic in the northern city was also slow but the army reopened the international highway that links Tripoli with Akkar district in the area of al-Tabbaneh.

Several Tripoli officials urged the army and security forces to take stern measures against the gunnies.

"We ask the security forces to implement a security plan to calm the situation in Tripoli," said caretaker Minister Faisal Karami.

MP Samir al-Jisr also said that the only way to control the fighting is for the army to take strong measures.

But the head of the Arab Democratic Party, Rifaat Eid, warned in remarks to An Nahar daily that his supporters will continue to respond to the sources of fire on Jabal Mohsen if the army failed to do that.

Tripoli has seen repeated festivities between Sunnis and Alawites.

In March, at least five people were killed and 26 others were maimed, including army troops, in gunbattles between Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh.

28 Hizbullah Fighters Killed in Qusayr, 70 Injured
[Naharnet] At least 28 Hizbullah fighters were killed in battles in the Syrian border town of al-Qusayr, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday.

"Twenty-eight members of Hizbullah's elite forces were killed in the festivities that have been ongoing since yesterday in the town of Qusayr," Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Earlier, Abdel Rahman said 23 fighters were killed and more than 70 others were maimed in festivities Qusayr on Sunday.

Al-Arabiya satellite news channel had reported that around 20 Hizbullah fighters and 62 others maimed in battles in Qusayr were submitted to hospitals in Beirut.

The news channel said that the fighters killed in the battles included Hassan Faisal Shukur, who is the nephew of Lebanese Baath Party leader Fayez Shukur.

Others were identified as Mohammed Fouad Rabah, Ahmed Wael Raad, Mohammed Qaseem Abdul Sater, Radwan Qassem al-Attar, Hatem Hussein.

Radio Voice of Leb (100.5) identified 15 of the slain fighters as Abdou al-Moussawi, Hasan Hariri, Ali Masr, Rida Ashour, Hajj Ahmed Wael Raad, Mohammed Qassem Abdul Sater, Ridwan al-Attar, Hasan Shukur, Mohammed Fouad Rabah, Hatem Hussein, Abbas Mohammed Othman, Hussein Ammar Yaghi, Mohammed Khalil Shahrour, Abdou Salman and Mohammed Mazloum.

Qusayr is home to about 20,000 residents and has been besieged for weeks by Syrian government troops.

Opposition activists said Hizbullah members launched on Sunday the assault on the town along with Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

's troops in the area.

Qusayr is strategically important because it is close to the Lebanese border and it links Damascus with the coast, where regime loyalists are concentrated. This includes Alawites to which the Assad family belongs.

Hizbullah sources told Agence La Belle France Presse on Sunday that at least four fighters have been killed in Qusayr.

Hizbullah is a close ally of the Damascus regime, and its fighters have been battling alongside the army in the Qusayr area for weeks, according to activists.

A handful of Hizbullah fighters killed in Syria have been brought back for burial in Leb, with bigwigs from the group occasionally paying condolences in person to the families of those killed.

The Observatory said that at least 55 people were killed in Qusayr on Sunday, most of them rebels, excluding those Hizbullah fighters and regime soldiers.

Hizbullah leader sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has acknowledged that members of his movement are fighting alongside Syrian troops against the rebels seeking Assad's ouster.

The uprising, which began in March 2011, has left more then 94,000 people dead according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog.

Hezbollah Suffers Losses in Fierce Battle for Qusayr
[NY Times] Fighting raged on Monday in the strategic Syrian city of Qusayr, as the government unleashed new Arclight airstrikes and rebels resisted fiercely in parts of the city even as their makeshift hospitals overflowed with the maimed, Syrian opposition activists said.

The toll of dead and maimed also continued to rise for the Lebanese bully boy group Hezbollah, which is fighting its biggest battle yet on the side of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
. Both sides have depicted the fighting in Qusayr as a turning point in the war that is raising regional tensions as Hezbollah plunges more deeply into the conflict.

Funerals for Hezbollah fighters were being planned in the group's strongholds in the Bekaa Valley and southern Leb, relatives of the dead said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition watchdog group, reported that at least 23 Hezbollah guerrillas had died in the fighting. If confirmed, that would be by far the largest toll for Hezbollah in a single Syrian battle.

Echoes of the battle rippled across neighboring Leb, which is deeply divided between supporters and opponents of Mr. Assad. In the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, from which many Sunni Mohammedan bully boyz have joined the Syrian rebels, residents held a candlelight vigil late Sunday in support of Qusayr's rebels. In Shiite areas, residents worried about relatives fighting in Syria and prayed for victory in a battle Hezbollah has framed as a proxy fight against its main foe, Israel, and an intervention to defend Shiites in Syria, of both Lebanese and Syrian descent, and other minorities they say are threatened by the uprising led by Syria's Sunni majority.

The Joint Command of the Free Syrian Army, the loose-knit United States-backed rebel umbrella group, issued a rallying cry that supporters of Hezbollah were bound to see as inflammatory, calling the group "impure," in a phrase that could resonate as a sectarian slur against Shiites.

It congratulated rebels holding out in Qusayr, calling them "brave heroes whose victories will be highlighted by history in letters made of light as they have defended their land and their honor from the impurity of the criminal terrorist members of Hezbollah." It also taunted Hezbollah's leadership, saying, "We know very well how their gang is constructed and we know how to take it apart and we will take it apart. We see heads that are ripe for the picking."

In a dig at Lebanese families sending Hezbollah fighters to the battle, the Free Syrian Army said, "We can now say that every single family or neighborhood in Baalbek or Hermel has a dead family member among their sons who fought in Qusayr."

One relative of a slain Hezbollah fighter spoke in equally strong terms about the battle, saying in an interview that it was as crucial for the party as the struggle against Israel.

Rebels said they destroyed seven armored vehicles and killed dozens more government and Hezbollah fighters, according to an activist in Qusayr.

The Observatory also said that at least six rebels had been killed on Monday, including a commander, but activists say the toll could be higher because not all bodies have been recovered. The joint command of the rebel forces also said that hospitals in Baalbek and the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut had accepted many Hezbollah maimed.

On Sunday, Syrian government troops backed by Hezbollah fighters pushed into parts of Qusayr, hammering the city with Arclight airstrikes and artillery, killing at least 52 people and wounding hundreds as civilians cowered, unable to flee, activists said. By the end of the day on Sunday, about 60 percent of the city, which is in Homs Province, was under the army's control for the first time in months, one activist said.
