#5  Ben Turpin (September 19, 1869 – July 1, 1940) was a cross-eyed American comedian and actor, best remembered for his work in silent films.

Turpin was born Bernard Turpin in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 19, 1869, the son of a candy store owner.[2]

Turpin and his first wife, Carrie Le Mieux, an actress, were married in Chicago in 1907. In 1923, Mrs. Turpin became ill with influenza, which caused the loss of her hearing. Heartbroken, Turpin brought his seriously ill wife to the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec, hoping she would be healed.[4] She eventually became an invalid, with Turpin placing his career on hold to care for her. Carrie died on October 2, 1925.

He worked in vaudeville, burlesque, and circuses. Turpin had a distinctive appearance, with a small wiry frame, a brush mustache, and crossed eyes. Turpin's famous eyes, he said, only crossed as a young adult after he suffered an accident. Turpin was convinced that the crossed eyes were essential to his comic career; his co-workers recalled that after he received any blow to the head he made a point of looking himself in the mirror to assure himself that they had not become uncrossed.

Turpin famously bought a $25,000 insurance policy with Lloyd's of London, payable if his eyes ever uncrossed. (How serious this was is open to question; such publicity stunts centered around a performer's "trademark" were common at the time.) He developed a vigorous style of physical comedy, including an ability to stage comic pratfalls that impressed even his fellow workers in the rough-and-tumble world of silent comedy. One of his specialties was a forward tumble he called the "hundred an' eight'" (probably a corruption of "one hundred and eighty," referring to a 180-degree somersault). It was basically an interrupted forward somersault initiated by kicking one leg up turning over 180 degrees to land flat on the back or in a seated position.

The year 1929 saw many silent-film stars uncertain about their future employment, with the new talking pictures requiring new skills and techniques. Ben Turpin chose to retire. He had invested his earnings in real estate, and being highly successful at this, had no financial need for more work. Producers soon sought him out for gag appearances in films. He commanded a flat fee of $1000 per appearance, regardless of whether it was a speaking role or a fleeting cameo. Among the most memorable of these cameos was in Paramount's Million Dollar Legs (1932) starring W. C. Fields, Jack Oakie and Susan Fleming.

He starred in only one more short subject, Keystone Hotel (Warner Bros., 1935), a two-reel reunion of silent-era comedians. Turpin's speaking voice, incidentally, was a gritty rasp that retained elements of the New Orleans "Yat" accent of his youth. His last film role was in the Laurel and Hardy film Saps at Sea in 1940, in which his cross-eyed face served as a joke punchline. He was paid his $1000 for one quick shot of his face and just 16 words of dialogue.

#6  Phyllis Haver (January 6, 1899 – November 19, 1960) was an American actress of the silent film era.

Haver auditioned for comedy producer Mack Sennett on a whim. Sennett hired her as one of his original Sennett Bathing Beauties. Within a few years, she appeared as a leading lady in two-reelers for Sennett Studios.

Later, while signed with DeMille-Pathé, Haver played the part of Roxie Hart in the first film adaptation of Chicago in 1927, opposite Hungarian film actor Victor Varconi. One reviewer called her performance "astoundingly fine," and added that Haver "makes this combination of tragedy and comedy a most entertaining piece of work."

She performed in the 1928 comedy film The Battle of the Sexes, directed by D. W. Griffith. The next year, she appeared with Lon Chaney, Sr., in his last silent film, Thunder.

Haver retired from the industry with two 'sound' films to her credit.

She married millionaire William Seeman with a service performed by New York Mayor James J. Walker at the home of Rube Goldberg, the cartoonist. The couple divorced in 1945.

Haver retired in Sharon, Connecticut. She died at age 61 from an overdose of barbiturates in 1960, a suspected suicide. Haver left no survivors

Brotherhood's ex-youth minister arrested in Cairo
[Al Ahram] Egyptian security forces in Cairo placed in durance vile
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
on Monday former minister of youth and Moslem Brüderbund leading member Osama Yassin, who faces multiple charges of murder and inciting violence.
Mohamed Hafez, secretary of the Brotherhood's former deputy supreme guide Khairat El-Shater was also arrested.

The two men were reportedly captured in a villa in Cairo's eastern outskirts.

The prosecutor-general had ordered on 31 July the arrest of several Brotherhood figures, including Yassin, who served as Egypt's minister of youth from June 2012 to July 2013.

A dozen Brotherhood leaders and hundreds of members, as well as leading Islamist figures, were arrested over the past week, mainly on charges of inciting violence. The mass arrests come in the wake of the police dispersal of two protest camps in Cairo that supported ousted Brotherhood-affiliated president Mohamed Morsi.

On Sunday, the first hearing of Mohamed Badie, supreme guide of the Brotherhood until his arrest, and of his two deputies, Khairat El-Shater and Rashad Bayoumi, was deferred to 29 October because the defendants could not attend for security reasons.

They are accused of inciting the murder of protesters who died outside the Brotherhood's Cairo headquarters on the evening of 30 June, as angry groups had stormed and ransacked the building.

Brotherhood's El-Shater given fresh incitement charge
[Al Ahram] Egyptian prosecutors on Monday charged leading Moslem Brüderbund figure Khairat El-Shater and Islamist preacher Safwat Hegazi with inciting violence against protesters in July.

El-Shater, the group's second-in-command, was tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
with his brother two days after the 3 July ouster of president Mohamed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood.

El-Shater and Hegazi, who was arrested last week, are accused of inciting violence against anti-Morsi protesters in Giza on 3 July, the night of Morsi's ouster.

At least 16 died during the festivities near Cairo University, close to Al-Nahda Square where a pro-Morsi sit-in was being staged.

Prosecutors also extended both men's legal detention period by 15 days pending investigation into the Monday charges.

El-Shater is also facing charges of inciting violence at different set of violent festivities between Morsi's opponents and supporters in late June.

Six Brotherhood members including El-Shater and Mohamed Badie, the group's spiritual leader, are accused of inciting deadly violence at festivities outside the group's headquarters in the Cairo district of Mokattam on 30 June.

The first court session was held on Sunday, although the defendants were absent for security reasons.

[MAGHAREBIA] Libyan authorities arrested several men in connection with assassination attacks in Benghazi, Libya Herald reported on Sunday (August 25th). RPG assault on Sebha police station injures eleven police and civilians
[Libya Herald] An apparently carefully-planned rocket and gun attack on Sebha's main cop shoppe left 12 people injured, including one of the attackers.

The assault came in two stages. The first was the launching of a rocket-propelled grenade at the building at 11:30 pm on Sunday. The device caused no injuries. However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
two hours later, while police and crowds were examining the damage, a further assault was launched. While gunnies drove up to the front of the cop shoppe and sprayed it with bullets, a second RPG was launched from the rooftop of a neighbouring building.

It was this weapon and the debris and shrapnel from its kaboom that showered down onto people at ground level, that caused most of the casualties. Seven coppers were hurt along with four civilians.

The front man for the Sebha Security Directorate, who asked not to be named, told the Libya Herald that he believed that the gun attack had been a diversion, to allow the assailant with the RPG to get into position on the rooftop. "It was done to distract the attention of the coppers" he said.

Officers returned the fire from the cars, which then expeditiously departed at a goodly pace. "We believe that we maimed at least one of the attackers, " said the front man, "because when we went to where they had shot at us, we found blood and fragments of glass".

The eleven injured were treated in Sebha hospital, then flown early this morning to Tunisia for further treatment.

Belmokhtar, MUJAO launch new jihadist group
[MAGHAREBIA] The al-Qaeda splinter group led by Mokhtar Belmokhtar and the Movement for Tawhid and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) joined forces this week.

The El Moulethemoune katibat ("Brigade of the Veiled Ones") and fellow al-Qaeda breakaway group MUJAO "decided to unite in a single movement called the 'Mourabitounes' to achieve the unity of Musselmens, from the Nile to the Atlantic", the jihadist organizations said in a statement to Mauritanian daily ANI on Wednesday (August 21st).

MUJAO and the brigade led by Belmokhtar (aka "Laaouar") said they had agreed to cede command to a new leader. According to ANI, the unnamed jihadist fought in Afghanistan before arriving in Mali.

"We reaffirm our devotion and our loyalty to Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
and reiterate our commitment to the jihadist doctrine conceived by the martyr the late Osama bin Laden
... who is no longer with us, and won't be again...
," the statement read, adding that the group drew "its inspiration from al-Qaeda and Taliban".

The new entity also threatened in its joint statement to target French interests worldwide.

In a statement reported by ANI, MUJAO explained that the merger was based on the principle that "unity is strength".

But according to local experts, the alliance is a sign of the terror groups' growing weakness and internal splits rather than strength.

"Following the French intervention in Mali, nothing will ever be the same again. The splits within AQIM and the other groups operating in the Sahel-Sahara region were already obvious," analyst Abdou Ould Mohamed told Magharebia. "The dismissal of Belmokhtar by Abou Moussab Abdelwadoud [Abdelmalik Droukdel
... aka Abdel Wadoud, was a regional leader of the GSPC for several years before becoming the group's supremo in 2004 following the death of then-leader Nabil Sahraoui. Under Abdel Wadoud's leadership the GSPC has sought to develop itself from a largely domestic entity into a larger player on the international terror stage. In September 2006 it was announced that the GSPC had joined forces with al-Qaeda and in January 2007 the group officially changed its name to the Al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb....
] brought these disagreements to light. Within these groups, it's often the law of the jungle that prevails."

AQIM is "now split along two fault lines", according to former French Ambassador to Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
Jean-Christophe Rufin. "The first is between its leadership, which has remained in the north in the Algerian scrubland around the emir Abdelmalik Droukdel, and the Sahel brigades in the south, which are not only far away from their leadership but also far away from each other," he told Le Figaro.

"These phalanxes have become bigger thanks to their hostage-taking and the vast desert area, which has enabled them to come into contact with all kinds of terrorist and mafia groups. As a result, the leadership of AQIM is having difficulty controlling its troops from the mountains," Rubin added.

According to Tahalil editor and terrorist expert Isselmou Ould Moustapha, the merger could have multiple implications for the future of terror groups in the Sahel.

The 'Mourabitounes' may try to "supplant AQIM in the Sahel-Saharan region, where it suffered a loss in Mali in terms of capabilities as well as its main leaders such as Abou Zeid", he explained. "The survivors have returned to Algeria, the south of Tunisia and Libya."

"The merger is partial because it was not signed by the other groups (or what remains of them) including 'Signed in Blood', a battalion of Belmokhtar virtually decimated in In Amenas (January 2013) and other phalanges of MUJAO, such as the Salahedine Brigade and Ousmane Dane Fodio Brigade," the analyst noted.

"The two groups thrown out of Mali and greatly weakened by air strikes and near-suicidal operations seek to restore their capability of supporting an operational tempo that has much abated in recent months in terms of attacks and operations. They do not even have the potential for taking hostages, their main source of income. Yet money is the sinew of war!" Ould Moustapha concluded.

Belmokhtar (aka Khaled Abou El Abass) orchestrated the siege at an Algerian natural gas plant near In Amenas, killing dozens of civilians. Belmokhtar's splinter group also claimed credit for a twin bombing that left at least twenty Nigeriens dead last May.

Iraq
Iraq attacks kill 11
[OMANOBSERVER] Attacks killed 11 people in Iraq yesterday, officials said, including six who were snatched from their homes and rubbed out, the latest in spiralling violence. Authorities have carried out wide-ranging operations against groups in recent weeks in a bid to combat the unrest, but analysts and diplomats say the government has not resolved the underlying causes of the violence. The surge in unrest has spurred concerns of a revival of the all-out sectarian bloodshed that left tens of thousands dead in 2006 and 2007. Yesterday, gunnies dressed in police uniforms stormed several houses in the town of Tarmiyah, just north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, claiming to be carrying out a security operation, police and an Interior Ministry official said. They kidnapped six men and left the area.

Local residents found the bodies of the men hours later just outside the neighbourhood, the security sources said. A local hospital confirmed receiving the six bodies, all of which bore gunshot wounds. Also yesterday, gunnies killed two prison guards and two civilians in separate attacks in northern Nineveh province, while a roadside kaboom killed another south of Storied Baghdad, security and medical sources said. Another blast in the southern city of Basra, which typically sees lower levels of violence than elsewhere in the country, left one person maimed. The attack apparently targeted a branch of an Endowment, the foundation charged with managing religious sites.

Qalandiya clashes resume during funerals
[Ynet] Paleostinians hurl stones, Molotov cocktails at security forces as three men killed earlier in the day laid to rest

Riots erupted in Qalandiya Monday as three Paleostinians who were killed in festivities with security forces earlier in the day were being laid to rest. During the funerals, masked members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades began to fire in the air.

Clashes between IDF and Border Guard forces and the Paleostinians soon ensued as fire and smoke rose over the checkpoint area.

Dozens of Paleostinians hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at the security forces in the Qalandiya checkpoint. The forces responded with crowd-dispersal means including gas grenades.

Clashes at the nearby refugee camp began early Monday morning after Paleostinians noticed a Border Guard force entering the area in order to arrest a terror suspect. The exposure led to festivities involving more than 1,000 Paleostinians, the Border Guards as well as an IDF force called in as back up.

Military sources said that the troops used crowd dispersal means, shot at the rioters' legs and were aided by a rescue force who employed similar riot control means. Three Paleostinians were killed and more than a dozen were maimed.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio wondered: Where the hell was Chumbaloni? And where was his $600?...
Paleostinian sources told Ynet that a meeting between Israeli and Paleostinian negotiators scheduled for Monday has been canceled following the Qalandiya incident.

They noted that the current round of talks was meant to be held in Jericho, likely in the home of Saeb Erekat
...negotiated the Oslo Accords with Israel. He has been chief Paleostinian negotiator since 1995. He is currently negotiating with Israel to establish a de jure Paleostinian state...

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
U.N. Experts Visit Alleged Syria Chemical Site
[An Nahar] U.N. inspectors Monday reached a site near Syria's capital of a suspected chemical weapons attack to launch an investigation, meeting doctors and casualties, online videos showed and an activist said.

"The inspectors managed to enter the town of Moadamiyet al-Sham with civilians, and visited the Red Islamic Thingy center where they met doctors," Abu Nadim, an activist in Damascus province, told Agence La Belle France Presse via Skype.

Abu Nadim said the inspectors were wearing helmets and bullet-proof jackets and were accompanied by their own security detail, who carried walkie-talkies.

In videos posted online, with faint sound quality, the inspectors appeared in a makeshift hospital, wearing blue helmets and speaking English. A doctor translates for an inspector as a man speaks, next to someone in a surgical mask.

The inspectors can also be seen with a nurse near the bed where a man is lying. One inspector takes notes as the rest of the group looks on.

The experts spoke to the victims of the suspected chemical attack, despite their convoy coming under sniper fire, U.N. leader the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
said.

The United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
has made "a strong complaint" to both the Syrian government and opposition rebels over the sniper attack, Ban said in a video statement from Seoul.

Despite the "very dangerous circumstances" faced by the team, he said the Sherlocks "visited two hospitals, they interviewed witnesses, survivors and doctors, they also collected some samples."

According to U.N. officials, the hospitals are in the Moadamiyet al-Sham district near Damascus.

A sniper attacked the U.N. convoy when it made an initial attempt to enter Ghouta, east of Damascus, where hundreds of people were killed in an alleged chemical weapons attack last Wednesday.

Opposition rebels and the government accuse each other of using the banned weapons.

They have also blamed each other for the sniper attack.

Ban said he had instructed his disarmament envoy, Angela Kane, who is in Damascus, "to register a strong complaint to the Syrian government and authorities of opposition forces" over the shooting and to ensure the security of the investigation team.

On Sunday, four days after the alleged attacks in which opposition groups say regime forces killed hundreds of civilians with chemical agents, Damascus gave the green light for a group of U.N. experts to visit the areas of Eastern Ghouta and Moadamiyet al-Sham on the outskirts of Damascus to investigate.

This came amid mounting pressure and accusations of responsibility against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
for the strikes from Western countries, which are weighing military action in Syria.

The U.N. mission is aimed at determining if a chemical weapons attack actually took place, but will not investigate who was responsible for any attack. Syria has rejected responsibility, in turn accusing the rebels of using chemical arms.
