Tunis police arrest terror suspect

a suspected terrorist, Tunivisions.net reported. The arrest followed a raid on a house in the Sabbaghine neighbourhood of Tunis.

In other security news Wednesday, Tunisian salafist leader Khamis Mejri was arrested at the port of La Goulette as he tried to leave for La Belle France, Mosaique FM reported. He was later released but ordered to remain in the country.

The cheikh was sentenced in absentia in October of 2012 to four months in prison for disturbing public order.

Egyptian police raid town south of Cairo, arresting at least 70
[MIAMIHERALD] Egyptian security forces on Thursday stormed Kerdasa -- a purported stronghold for ousted President Mohammed Morsi -- exchanged fire with residents in an hours-long street battle and jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
dozens of suspected forces of Evil in the latest government crackdown on cities suspected of serving as redoubts for armed Islamists.

A police general, Nabil Farag, died in the violence, the first time security forces had returned to Kerdasa, an industrial town south of Cairo, since Aug. 14, when 11 coppers died in festivities with Islamists who were protesting the clearing in Cairo of a pro-Morsi sit-in. The Cairo action left as many as 1,100 pro-Morsi demonstrators dead in what became the initial step of a fierce crackdown.

There have been similar festivities in other Egyptian cities as communities become quasi-battlefields branded as either pro- or anti-government. The government has launched similar attacks in the Sinai, and earlier this week in the southern city of Delga security forces arrested dozens on charges that they'd torched churches or supported terrorists.

The government said 70 people were arrested Thursday, but interviews with officials at the scene suggested that the total might be much higher.

It wasn't always clear why some of those who were arrested had been targeted. McClatchy news hounds watched security forces detain one man; members of the force couldn't agree on the man's crime.

The man, who sported a beard often favored by Islamists, was arrested at a makeshift checkpoint. The two coppers and one soldier at the scene each offered a different reason.

"We found a machine gun with him," said a police officer who was sitting next to the man in the police cruiser. A second officer farther away said the man was suspected of killing coppers last month. The soldier said the man was being held because "we found empty bullet shells in his pocket while inspecting him."

87 Killed in Islamist Rampage in Northeast Nigeria Town
[An Nahar] Islamist gunnies have rampaged through a town in northeastern Nigeria with heavy weapons, setting public buildings on fire and killing 87 people, including a soldier and the wife of a senior policeman, authorities said Thursday.

The attack on Wednesday was the latest carnage to hit the region, which has seen an upsurge in violence in recent days linked to a military offensive as well as attacks by Islamist bad boy group Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...

Armed with Kalashnikovs, rocket launchers and homemade bombs, the Islamists stormed Yadi Buni in Yobe state around 10:00 pm, leading to a shootout with troops in which a soldier was killed, state police commissioner Sanusi Rufa'i said.

They set fire to a makeshift cop shoppe, the fire service, a local education office and the home of the divisional police head in the town, whose wife was burnt to death inside, Rufa'i said.

"Buni Yadi was attacked last night by Boko Haram bad turbans," he said. "A soldier was killed in a shootout and the wife of the (divisional police chief) was burnt to death in her home."

Telecom towers in the town were also burnt by the Islamists, the police commissioner said.

It was the second time Buni Yadi was attacked by Boko Haram in as many months.

Scores of people have been left dead in recent days from military raids or Boko Haram attacks.

The military claimed on Wednesday that a strike on a Boko Haram camp in the northeast last week left about 150 Islamists and 16 soldiers dead, amid reports of dozens of troops killed.

On Tuesday night, suspected Boko Haram members dressed as soldiers set up checkpoints in the Benishiek area, killing an unclear number of people and burning some 50 buildings.

Some residents spoke of around 20 people or more killed in Tuesday's violence, but there has been no official corpse count.

The attacks as well as claims and counterclaims regarding last week's violence again raised questions over a four-month-old military offensive seeking to end a years-long insurgency by Boko Haram.

Syrian War Expanding to Central Asia?
Three Central Asian militants coming from the Syrian war apparently had plans to carry out attacks in Osh and Bishkek, but the GKNB caught the suspects before they could do anything.

Counter-terrorism measures taken at the end of August by security forces in Kyrgyzstan have prevented acts of terrorism planned for September in Bishkek and Osh, the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) said.

Three suspected members of the international terrorist group Islamic Jihad Union (IJU) entered Kyrgyzstan in late August from Syria with the aim of carrying out terrorist attacks in Bishkek and Osh, the GKNB said. The men arrived only weeks before a September 13 security summit of regional leaders in Bishkek and were planning "high-impact terror acts," but the GKNB detained the suspects in Osh Oblast shortly before they could commit any violence.

The Syrian fighters were in a pitiful, gloomy state, he said. Everything there was depressing, and with the chaos that prevailed in Syria, the three Central Asians decided to leave
"Their leader turned out to be a citizen of our neighbour Kazakhstan, while two of his henchmen were born in Kyrgyzstan and had lived in Osh at one time," according to the GKNB report. "They fought Syrian government forces as members of terrorist units."

The alleged ringleader of the suspects is talking.
"Ouchhhh! Oooooch!!! I'll talk! I'll talk! Stop doing THAT!!!!"
The man, whom Kazakhstani media September 17 identified as Sergei Leskevich, a Kazakhstani national but a native of Tokmok, Kyrgyzstan, admitted during interrogation that the men intended to commit acts of terrorism in Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz suspects were identified as Sardor Rakhmonov and Majit Abdullayev.

Kyrgyz state TV late September 16 broadcast an excerpt of Leskevich's interrogation, in which he described how he became enmeshed in jihadist activities.

"About a year ago, I began to study Islam," he said. "We were taken to a little place called Sheikh-Suleiman, where Muslims undergo basic military training. We were told that the Muslims in Syria needed help, and we went out to Minna airport."

The Syrian fighters were in a pitiful, gloomy state, he said. Everything there was depressing, and with the chaos that prevailed in Syria, the three Central Asians decided to leave, Leskevich said in the broadcast.

troops in Afghanistan.

The paramilitary Frontier Corps carried out a series of raids in the town of Hub, 700 kilometres (400 miles) southeast of Quetta which is the capital of the troubled southwestern province of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...

"We arrested a gang of 12 people who have been involved in destroying NATO containers," Corps front man Abdul Wassey told AFP.

He said the suspects also confessed to torching the NATO vehicles and killing or wounding their drivers.

"Cars used by these gangsters in the crimes were also recovered," he added.

The group was being interrogated for information about similar gangs operating in different areas of Balochistan, the front man said.

The arrests come days after nine NATO tankers carrying fuel were destroyed in the Hub area on their way to the Chaman border crossing to Afghanistan.

Overland oil shipments to NATO troops in landlocked Afghanistan resumed through Pakistain less than two weeks ago under tighter security after a five-month suspension due to attacks.

Nine Shiites Injured in Pakistan Hand Grenade Attack
[An Nahar] Nine people were maimed in a hand grenade attack targeting a Shiite mosque in Pakistain's port city of Bloody Karachi

on Thursday, officials said.

The attack took place in Majeed Colony, in the bustling eastern neighborhood of Landhi.

"Attackers threw a hand grenade on a Shiite mosque, wounding nine people, two of them seriously," city police chief Shahid Hayat told Agence La Belle France Presse.

He said the mosque was the target, adding that the attackers later fled.

Local senior police official Nasir Aftab also confirmed the incident, and said those injured in the attack were all Shiites who were attending a religious ceremony.

Philippine communists storm bandit camp
Communist militants stormed a bandit camp, killing one gunman and injuring five others in deadly campaign against lawless groups.

Ariel Magbanwag, a spokesman for the New People’s Army - South Central Bukidnon Sub-Regional Command, said several militants were also injured in the raid that targeted the dreaded New Indigenous People’s Army for Reform in the town of San Fernando. He said, “The attack was launched in response to the overdue demands for justice of this group’s victims."

Magbanwag said the fighting in the village of Dao lasted more than two hours and that the militant forces stopped firing after the bandits seized civilians and used them as shields. He said, “One was killed while five other bandit members were wounded inside their fortified camp in a chain of sporadic firefight which lasted for more than two hours. Surprised by the sudden assault of the revolutionary army, some armed bandits ran and hid among civilians; they returned fire using the gold panners in the area as human shield."

Magbanwag also accused the bandit group of being behind the spate of murders and robberies in the region. He said troops are allegedly protecting the bandits, who control gold mining activities in the town. He added, “We assure the victims (of the bandit group) and their families that the future is bursting with many more opportunities. They can hope for justice to be served in due time."

Militant forces have previously attacked or punished bandit and paramilitary groups blamed for civilian atrocities in the southern Philippines.

Putin: We Can't Guarantee Syria Will Turn Over Chemical Weapons
Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
said Thursday he cannot guarantee Syria will surrender its chemical weapons arsenal and suggested that Israel could help ensure the success of the U.S.-Russian deal by surrendering its alleged nuclear weapons.

"I don't know whether we will manage to persuade" Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
to go along with the plan, Putin said at the Valdai Discussion Club, an annual Russian political forum. "Up to now everything looks as if Syria completely agreed with our plan.... But I can't say whether we will manage to complete the process by 100%."

"Syria came into possession of chemical weapons as an alternative to Israel's nuclear weapons," Putin said. "The technological superiority of Israel in the region is so obvious that it doesn't require nuclear weapons, which makes [Israel] a target and creates a special problem for it.

Putin implied that the prospects for peace and chemical weapons disarmament in Syria would be bolstered if Israel gave up its own suspected cache of nuclear arms, believed to be the only such arsenal in the Middle East.

Putin insisted that Washington should bear equal responsibility with Moscow for the success of the plan to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons, and reiterated his previous insistence that Russia doesn't want to keep Assad in power by any and all means.

Syrian Rebel Groups Fight Among Themselves
[VOA News] Rebels groups trying to oust Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now...
have begun fighting with each other in towns across northern Syria, highlighting the growing turmoil between factions favored by the West and those allied to al-Qaeda and other jihadist groups.

Fighters from the al-Qaeda offshoot, the Islamic State of Syria and Sham (ISIS), overran the border town of Azaz near the frontier with Turkey late Wednesday, triggering the closure of a nearby key border crossing by Turkish soldiers.

The festivities in Azaz erupted after the jihadists seized a German doctor working with an international medical charity, claiming he was a spy, say opposition activists. Then rebels belonging to a group known as Northern Storm, part of the Western backed Free Syrian Army (FSA), responded by freeing the physician, prompting wider shootouts in Azaz.

Northern Storm itself is blamed for the kidnapping a year ago of 11 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims.

Up to a dozen FSA fighters were killed in the fighting, according to opposition activists. At least two jihadists were killed, both imported muscle, one a Libyan, say opposition activists, who declined to be named for safety reasons.

Azaz is a few minutes from the border crossing into Turkey at Bab-al-Salama, a major supply route for the rebels and one used by relief agencies to transport food and other essential aid into northern Syria. It is also one of the main crossings for refugees fleeing northern Syria.

"By taking Azaz, the Islamic State is a step closer to controlling the crossing. Its objective seems to be taking over the whole countryside north of Aleppo," opposition activist Abu Louay al-Halabi told Rooters.

U.S. pilot scares off Iranians with 'Top Gun'-worthy stunt
[WASHINGTONTIMES] The U.S. Air Force has a message for Iran: Don't mess with our drones.

In what only can be described as a scene out of Tom Cruise's "Top Gun," Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, Air Force chief of staff, describes how F-22 stealth jets scared off Iranian jets from a U.S. drone flying in international airspace.

The Aviationist reports that in March a U.S. MQ-1 drone came close to being intercepted by an Iranian F-4 Phantom combat plane, but the Iranian aircraft stopped short after a warning by an American pilot.

"He [the Raptor pilot] flew under their aircraft [the F-4s] to check out their weapons load without them knowing that he was there, and then pulled up on their left wing and then called them and said 'you really ought to go home,'" Gen. Welsh said.

According to The Aviationist, the Iranians came within 16 miles of the drone.

#4  Steve, the F-4 was sold to lots of countries; only the US has put an embargo on the sale of parts. Israel, Japan and Australia fly ( or flew) the Phantom and South Korea I think. I doubt these countries have the same embargo or sales ban protocols in place to keep third parties from acting as go betweens for sale of parts. Plus the F-4 is not a sophissticated aircraft, a brick with big honking engines so relatively easy to reverse engineer; they are already doing that to the TOmcats.

#7  The fact that Iran can get spare parts for the Phantom is one of the reasons that when the F-14 was retired, all of them were destroyed except for a few museum pieces.

ISF Finds Grenade Near Bomb Apartment in Halat
[An Nahar] The Internal Security Forces Intelligence Branch have found a hand grenade near the site where a Syrian man was killed in a kaboom north of Beirut on Tuesday, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said Thursday that the grenade was found in the garden of the house in the town of Halat in Jbeil where Moussa Mustafa Ibrahim died after a bomb went kaboom! while he was in the rented room.

A military expert moved the grenade to a safe area and the ISF launched an investigation into the incident, the agency added.

On Wednesday, Ibrahim's wife retracted a statement that her husband was a Syrian intelligence officer.

Three Lebanese Sentenced to Life in Prison over Attacks against UNIFIL
[An Nahar] The military court on Wednesday sentenced in absentia three Lebanese nationals to life in prison over their involvement in attacks against the UNIFIL troops in southern Lebanon.

Mohammed Zayyat, Samer al-Reech and Mahmoud Derbass were convicted of attacking U.N. peacekeeping troops and were given life in prison with hard labor.

The three men were previously released during the process of the trial but did not show up at court for the hearings.

The court's rule, however, can be appealed in the case the three men turned themselves in to the military court or were arrested by Internal Security Forces.

On December 9, 2011, five French soldiers and two civilians were wounded by a powerful roadside bomb that targeted a UNIFIL patrol in the southern coastal city of Tyre.

UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti said the 5 peacekeepers were injured when an explosion targeted their patrol in an area south of Tyre around 9:30 am. He did not specify to which contingent they belonged to.

A security official told Agence France Presse that a bomb was hidden under dirt on the side of the road and detonated as the soldiers were driving by in a four-wheeler.

The blast left a one-meter deep crater and caused damages to nearby houses.

Also, a French U.N. patrol was attacked on July 26 and Italian peacekeepers were targeted on May 27.
