Rohrabacher asked the witnesses the amount the U.S. was spending, and how many American troops have been killed in Afghanistan this past year.

--Tech & Moderator Notes
Edit: Santa is Checking His List and Finds Our Rantburg Mayor Fred....
deserves a Hanukkah/Christmas present this year.

And Faithful Penelope has been bad to him..... comment from Fred below.
He's been a good boy, letting us opine at Rantburg. The opinions/comments are real. The background experiences behind these opinions/comments, lend a wealth of knowledge making Rantburg the special place to be....

And for the work he does behind the scene? Well, let's just say, he's underpaid.
(See below)
You know that phrase often heard at this time of the year.... "It's better to give than to receive."

We Rantburgers have been receiving from Mayor Fred, and it's time for the giving part...... It's a click that will bring a smile to your face.....

There is that PayPal button far down on the right side of the screen. Keep scrolling ---- PayPal also gets you to the place for a credit card entry.

When you click the PayPal button, scroll down and you will see:
Don't have a PayPal account?
Use your credit card or bank account (where available). Continue

The Continue is clickable and displays that familiar credit card entry screen.

Need to snail mail cash or check? Email "fred-at-rantburg.com" for an address....

So, think about it -- where else do you get the Rantburg Defender-Scimitar, published daily for over a decade -- the best War on Terror news with knowledgeable comments -- the Babe of the Day and the best snarkiness of all snarks online......

Oh, and did you have some anxiety while Fred had Rantburg down, attempting to move us to Faithful Penelope? Imagine, gone forever..... it could happen.....

Read this from Fred about his experience with Faithful Penelope and you will want to give... if you want your daily dose of Rantburg....

Dig deep..... Fred needs a smile with that bourbon and those chocolate peanut clusters. You may not know, this server change includes a drive to and from Baltimore, lugging all that computer stuff up to some undisclosed location -- and when not working, back down......

It didn't work.

I'm going to have to try again next week. Faithful Penelope did everything to thwart me but catch fire and burn to a cinder. She absolutely refused to find the internet, even though she could find the network--just not as far as the name server.

I finally found myself repeating the same attempts to fix it and expecting different results. I unswapped and brought the silly thing home. On the way home, a lady driving behind me was rear-ended and almost had to buy me a new neck. I stopped at the grocery store and when I was unloading one of the bags broke.

I am now drinking bourbon and eating chocolate peanut clusters. I'll find something else that's bad for me later and do it. Then I'll start looking at all of Penelope's configuration files to see where I was stoopid.

Blast accident in Kabul arms depot triggers alarm
[Bangla Daily Star] An accidental kaboom in an arms depot shook central Kabul yesterday, with Afghan officials moving quickly to allay fears of an attack on the city that has often been targeted by krazed killers.

The loud blast erupted close to the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters and in an area of the capital that houses many embassies and international institutions.

ISAF confirmed that the kaboom occurred outside their headquarters, while the US embassy sounded its emergency "duck and cover" sirens to warn employees to seek shelter.

"It was an accident, not an enemy act," Lutfullah Mashal, an official from the National Directorate of Security (NDS) intelligence agency, told AFP.

"The blast happened in a depot for unwent kaboom! ordinance. It was totally an accident. There is no reported casualties, but there are some damages."

The NDS said in a statement said that the depot contained explosives recently seized from snuffies and due to be taken to the Disbandment of Illegal Armed Group (DIAG) programme, which destroys illegal weapons and explosives.

An NDS front man told local television that the depot stored boom jackets, explosives and unwent kaboom! bombs.

The interior ministry also confirmed the kaboom was an accident.

Somali pirates hear ten year prison sentence
[Shabelle] The Public Prosecution demanded up to ten years in prison before the Rotterdam court, for four Somali pirates who lured the Dutch Marine into an ambush last year in October. The marines were fired upon at close range, when they tried to check a ship along the coast of Somalia, during a mission against piracy. 'A group of marine literally became sitting ducks in three small, open boats,' concluded the prosecutors of the National Prosecution Authority.
"Hang 'em from the yardarm, Mister Jones!"
"Aye aye, sir!"

The marines were on their way to an Iranian fishing boat in three aid vessels (RHIB's) of the Hr. Ms. Rotterdam, when suddenly they came under fire. The fishing boat had been captured by pirates. The marines returned fire, and the Rotterdam opened fire as well. The firefight caused the ceased fishing boat to catch on fire, resulting in the crew abandoning ship.
"Except for that one! Keelhaul him!"
"Aye aye, sir!"

The commander of the Rotterdamsent the RHIB's back to the burning ship to rescue people from the water, when they came under fire again, that time from the ship and from the shore. The marines still managed to retrieve 25 people from the water.

The four suspects who were tried on Wednesday were among those 25. They are being sued for piracy and attempted murder. 'The defendants prepared a cowardly ambush and did not hesitate to use the ship's crew as a living shield. The defendants proved with their actions to have no respect for someone else's life,' concluded the prosecutors during the session.

The National Prosecution Authority demanded ten years against the suspect who fulfilled a leading role and who was extremely violent in his behavior toward the crew of the ceased ship. Two other suspects both heard eight years. The fourth one heard six years, because his file showed he had only been on the ceased ship for a short time, but he did partake in the shooting of the Dutch marines.

Failed grenade attack on British tourists in Kenya: Police
[Al Ahram] Attackers hurled a grenade Thursday at British tourists in Kenya but it failed to explode, police said, in a rare attack specifically targeting foreign visitors who are key to the economy.

The tourists came under attack while travelling by road from the Indian Ocean coastal resort of Diani to Kenya's main port of Mombasa, a mainly Musselmen region whose white-sand beaches are popular with tourist but which is also troubled by myrmidon groups and religious tensions.

"The grenade has been detonated safely by experts," said Robert Kitur, police chief for the Mombasa, where the attack took place.

"We are investigating the incident and looking for the man who threw the grenade at the tourists and fled."

The tourists continued on their way to a wildlife safari at one of Kenya's world famous national parks.

Tourism is a key multi-million earner of foreign currency for Kenya.

The British High Commission in Kenya said it was "aware of a failed grenade attack on a vehicle near Mombasa", adding they were "looking into whether any British nationals were involved and stand ready to provide consular assistance if needed".

The attack comes as Kenya celebrates its 50 years of independence from former colonial rulers Britannia.

Since Kenya invaded southern Somalia in October 2011 to help oust Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab bad boys, it has seen a wave of grenade attacks.

Home grown groups including the Islamist Al-Hijra group, a radical organization formerly known as the Musselmen Youth Center, operate on Kenya's coast and have been linked to the Shabaab.

Several radical Musselmen preachers have been assassinated in Mombasa sparking riots by their supporters, who have accused the police of carrying out the killings, claims they strongly deny.

Grenades have been hurled into restaurants in Mombasa and crowded areas in the capital Nairobi, as well as a string of attacks in the remote northeast region bordering Somalia.

The Shabaab also claimed the brutal September assault on Nairobi's upmarket Westgate mall in which at least 67 people died in a four-day seige, a centre popular with foreigners.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
such grenades attacks have in the past rarely targeted tourists.

In September 2011 gunnies killed a British man David Tebbutt and kidnapped his wife Judith -- who was held for six months before being released -- who were on holiday at a Kenyan coastal resort close to the Somali border.

Three weeks later, disabled Frenchwoman Marie Dedieu was kidnapped from her home on Kenya's Manda island and later died in captivity in Somalia.

Police said they had beefed up security.

"We are appealing to everybody to exercise caution, especially over this festive season, and to share information with security agencies to win the war on terror," said Kitur.

"We have intensified security at tourist hotels and other vital installations to avert terrorism attacks."

[Al Ahram] A boom-mobile went kaboom! outside a central security forces camp in Egypt's Suez Canal city of Ismailia, killing one and injuring at least 20 conscripts, Al-Ahram's Arabic news website reported.

The kaboom was followed by extensive gunfire sounds, according to eye-witnesses who talked to the website.

Al-Ahram reported the conscripts were being transported to hospitals.

In a similar attack, a military intelligence facility in Ismailia was targeted by a boom-mobile in October injuring six army personnel.

Since the ouster of former Islamist president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
on 3 July, and a military campaign in Sinai that followed it, security personnel have faced escalating attacks by bully boys. Several police and army officers have been killed by drive-by shootings in Ismailia since August.

21 Al-Azhar students interrogated over clashes with police
[Egypt Independent] Prosecutors in Nasr City began interrogating 21 pro-Moslem Brüderbund student protesters from Al-Azhar University over festivities that erupted between demonstrating students and security forces.

The students are charged with assembling, sabotage, protesting without a permit, possessing incendiary substances while protesting, threatening public security, using force against the police, disrupting traffic, destroying three police vehicles and setting trees on fire.

The investigation's report said the remains of Molotov cocktails and pelted rocks were at the scene of the incident.

On Monday, festivities with security forces caused a private bus to be torched by demonstrators.

Students at the university have stepped up protests since a fellow student was killed on campus in festivities by security forces 21 November. The victim was a sixth year medical student named Abdel Ghany Mohammed Hamouda. Students have vowed to continue protesting until the perpetrator of Hamouda's death is brought to justice.

J&C offices bombed in Derna
[Libya Herald] A bomb went off outside the offices of Justice and Construction Party (J&C) in Derna early this morning causing substantial damage to the building. A neighbouring building was also damaged as were a number of vehicles in the street. No one was injured, however, as there was no one in the building at the time of the blast, put at around 3am by local officials

Condemning the attack, Mohammed Sarwan, head of the J&C, said in a statement later this morning that it would not stop the party continuing its work in the town.

The J&C headquarters were the only remaining party political offices in Derna. Those belonging to the National Forces Alliance had already been attacked.

Several other public buildings have also been bombed or torched in the past year -- the court house, a radio station, the passport office, the power station, security headquarters. Yesterday a bomb went kaboom! outside the local Misrata Martyrs School which was reportedly being used as a base for the local committee organising elections to the 60-member Constitutional Committee.

It is not clear who might have been responsible for today's attack. Derna is seen as a stronghold of Islamists but they are bitterly divided. Furthermore, at the beginning of the month there was a week of protests against militias in the town and Ansar Al-Sharia in particular which saw it forced to abandon its headquarters and its radio station torched.

Calm returns to Sirte after deadly clashes left two dead and four injured
[Libya Herald] Calm returned today to Sirte after yesterday's communal festivities which left two dead and four others injured. The festivities erupted in the Jiza Bahriya district between young Misratis living in Sirte and members of the Qadhadhfa tribe. There has been long-standing hostility between the two communities since before the revolution.

"Initially, it was a family feud but then it escalated into armed festivities between men from the two groups," a member of Sirte Local Council who did not want to be named told the Libya Herald. Heavy weapons were used during the festivities and the road to Jiza Bahriya was closed for over 15 hours, he added.

The two dead young men, one a Misrati the other a Qadhadhfi, have been named as Rajab Sghaier Triya and Mohammed Omar Abdu. The maimed were taken to Ibn Sina Hospital, with one of them said to be in a critical condition.

Attempts at pacifying the factions were initiated yesterday by Sirte Council of Elders as well as a number of local civil society organizations.

"They made huge progress in their initiative," the Sirte Local Council member said. He also credited Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya, Tunisia and Yemen, with the Libyan and Tunisian versions currently most active...
in Sirte with attempts at containing the violence.

Meanwhile,
...back at the dirigible, Jack stuck the cigar in his mouth, stepped onto the gantry, and asked Got a light, Mac?
Von Schtinken stopped short, lowering the dagger and trying to control his features.
If you light that thing, Herr Armschtröng, he pointed out, his voice tense, we all die!...

Sirte's newly appointed military commander, Abdulmajid Zeidan, visited the town today and met with the local council and elders of the town to discuss local security.

Sirte has seen a spate of violence in recent months, including the murders of a number of leading officials, the most recent being that of passports officer Colonel Ramadan Al-Tarooq three days ago.

Congressman kidnapped in spiralling tit-for-tat action between Kikla and Warshefana
[Libya Herald] Azizia Congressman Abdulmajid Al-Zantuni has been kidnapped.

Confirming the kidnapping, the General National Congress' front man, Omar Hemidan, told the Libya Herald that the congressman had been out last night with friends but then the family lost contact with him. There was not enough information so far, he said, as to know who was behind the abduction.

It is widely believed, however, to have been in retaliation for the seizure the previous evening of a number of Kikla officials: the head of the local council, a member of the Shura Council and seven other local officials. It is alleged they were kidnapped by Warshefana forces.

That kidnapping is said to have been in retaliation for the abduction of a Warshefana local accused of having earlier killed a Kikla man, a member of Kikla Military Council, Begassem Al-Kikli, was reported as saying by the Libyan news agency LANA.

Attempts to release the men were underway, LANA added.

According to Hemidan, the GNC and the government looking into the latest developments regarding Zantuni. The Deputy Interior Minister, Bahloul Al-Sayed, was also investigating the incident.

There is a long history of rivalry between the Warshifana and its Kikla and Zawia neighbours.

Attack fears close UN offices as Yemen condemns 'smear'
[Al Ahram] The United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
closed its offices in the Yemeni capital on Thursday over fears of possible car kabooms, although Western embassies remained open.

Despite official denials of an alert, most shops in Sanaa were shuttered and little traffic ventured out onto the streets as rumours swirled among the city's residents of the risk of an imminent attack.

The American and Turkish schools were also closed.

Security forces have been on high alert in the capital since a brazen daylight attack on the defence ministry's sprawling headquarters on December 5 killed 56 people, among them expatriate medical staff.

Sectarian clashes kill at least 40 in Yemen
[Al Ahram] Security officials say more than 40 people have been killed in sectarian festivities between Sunni Islamic forces of Evil and northern rebel forces belonging to a branch of Shias in northern Yemen.

The officials say the fighting began when ultraconservative Salafis took over a Hawthi stronghold in a strategic mountainous area near the border with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
. The two sides battled with artillery fire, mortar shells and machine guns in the town of al-Fagga.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the fighting publically.

Thursday's festivities mark an expansion of the battlefield between the two rival sides, which have been concentrated in an adjacent province.

US drone strike kills 13 in Yemen wedding party: officials
[The News (Pak)] Missiles fired by a U.S. drone slammed into a convoy of vehicles traveling to a wedding party in central Yemen on Thursday, killing at least 13 people, Yemeni security officials said.

The officials said the attack took place in the city of Radda, the capital of Bayda province, and left charred bodies and burnt out cars on the road. The city, a stronghold of al-Qaeda Death Eaters, witnessed deadly festivities early last year between armed rustics backed by the military and al-Qaeda gunnies in an attempt to drive them out of the city.

There were no immediate details on who was killed in the strike, and there were conflicting reports about whether there were gunnies traveling with the wedding convoy.

A military official said initial information indicated the drone mistook the wedding party for an al-Qaeda convoy. He said rustics known to the villagers were among the dead.

One of the three security officials, however, said al-Qaeda gunnies were suspected to have been traveling with the wedding convoy.

The CIA declined to comment on the reported drone strike. While the U.S. acknowledges its drone program in Yemen, it does not usually talk about individual strikes.

If further investigations determine that the victims were all civilians, the attack could fuel an outburst of anger against the United States and the government in Sanaa among a Yemeni public already opposed to the U.S. drone strikes.

Civilian deaths have bred resentments on a local level, sometimes undermining U.S. efforts to turn the public against the Death Eaters. The backlash in Yemen is still not as large as in Pakistain, where there is heavy pressure on the government to force limits on strikes -- but public calls for a halt to strikes are starting to emerge.

13 of its activists.

Shibir used the dens to impart training to its members to carry out arson attacks on vehicles on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, and different subversive activities in the upazila, police said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sitakunda Circle) Salauddin Sikdar said a joint team of BGB and police had discovered the dens in the upazila's Tulatoli area in a two-hour raid that started around 6:30pm, and arrested the Shibir activists.

The team also recovered many jihadi books, petrol, diaries with operation details, and mobile phone sets containing the video footages and photos of different acts of sabotage carried out by them.

Law enforcers launched the operation after Shibir activists set fire to two vehicles in Jalil Gate area near Faujdarhat around 3:30 pm.

Hindus' houses, shops, war tribunal judge's home attacked
[Bangla Daily Star] Riled at the execution of Abdul Quader Mollah, Jamaat-Shibir men last night beat an Awami League leader in Satkhira dead and torched over 100 houses and shops in Nilphamari and Satkhira.

A group of Jamaat-Shibir activists beat up Azizur Rahman, ex-president of Gopinathpur union unit of AL in Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira, at his village home around midnight, leaving him dead on the spot, said police.

Witnesses said Jamaat-Shibir men blocked the Nilphamari-Domar road and stormed the houses of local Awami League leaders and Hindus at Beltali bazar around 2:00am today.

The attackers burnt down the house of Laxmichap union AL president Shyam Charan Roy to ashes. They roughed up the elderly AL leader and his family members.

A freedom fighter, Shyam Charan was admitted to Nilphamari General Hospital, reports our correspondent.

Earlier around 9:00pm, another group of Jamaat-Shibir men torched about 80 shops at Kacharibazar in the same union.

Police could not reach the spot as the Jamaat men blocked the Nilphamari-Domar road near Horitokitola and damaged a bailey bridge there.

In Satkhira, Jamaat-Shibir men set fire to four houses of local AL activists at Kalaroa. Another group of vandals looted five houses and set those afire and damaged a rice mill at Agardari in Sadar Upazila around midnight, said witnesses.

Jamaat-Shibir activists set fire to the union AL office at Budhata in Sadar Upazila and also to at least eight shops at Jhaodanga bazar and Asashuni in the district.

The opposition activists blocked the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway on a stretch between Satkania and Lohagora at 11:00pm, halting traffic on the road.

In Feni, Jamaat men torched 10 vehicles at Mahipal and Muhuri Bridge areas on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and attempted setting fire to the local office of the Power Development Board. They also hurled a petrol bomb at the local branch of Mercantile Bank.

In Dinajpur, Jamaat-Shibir arsonists last night set ablaze the house of AL politician (Dinajpur-6) Azizul Haque and a petrol pump.

JUDGE'S HOME ATTACKED

The village home of an international crimes tribunal judge in Chapainawabganj came under kabooms, exposing once again the government's failure in ensuring the security of those involved in the trial of war criminals.

One petrol bomb and four hand-made crude bombs were thrown into the compound of the house of Justice ATM Fazle Kabir, chairman of International Crimes Tribunal-1, around 1:00pm, reported our Chapainawabganj correspondent.

Kabir's family members were inside the house at Chamagram village of sadar upazila at the time but no one was hurt, said Fazle Kabir's younger brother Golam Kabir.

The attack came in a series of events, revealing the danger that war crimes witnesses, victims, prosecutors and even judges face amid a lack of security measures by the government.

Mostafa Hawlader, a key witness in the war crimes case against Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi
...Islamic orator and politician. He was a former Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008, and is one of the most prominent leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami...
, succumbed to his stab injuries on Tuesday two days after he had been hacked in his sleep at his Pirojpur home.

This death was followed by the torching of the village home of a senior Appellate Division judge, Surendra Kumar Sinha, at Kamalganj in Moulvibazar.

He was on the five-member bench of the Supreme Court, which on September 17 awarded the death penalty to Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
leader Abdul Quader Mollah for wartime offences.

Golam Kabir said the petrol bomb had smashed a windowpane of a room where six coppers were on guard.

Officer-in-Charge of Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station Jasimuddin said police were suspecting Jamaat-Shibir men of making the attack.

Though justice seekers and campaigners of the war crimes trial have been demanding a law for the protection of witnesses, victims and others concerned, no such step has yet been taken.

Regarding witness protection, the government only formed national and district committees that have reportedly failed to assess the threats to the witnesses.

A number of prosecution witnesses received death threats in the last two years and, recently, bombs were went kaboom! near the residences of several prosecutors.

Meanwhile,

#1  Brought to you by the same Moslems who murdered 3,000,000 civilian Hindus for being dirty kuffirs in 1971.

They aren't sorry and they want to do it again. The govt. of BanglaDesh is about as effective as a sack of wet garbage which, as chance would have it, is what it actually IS.

Laxmipur Turns Battle Zone: 4 killed, 28 injured
[Bangla Daily Star] At least four people were rubbed out and 28 were maimed when Rapid Action Battalion personnel opened fire during their clash with opposition men in Laxmipur town yesterday morning.

Jamaat activist Anwar Hossain was killed and 38 people, including three coppers, were maimed in Comilla after police clashed with Jamaat men in Monoharganj upazila, on the last day of the opposition alliance's blockade.

In Laxmipur, the clash erupted after a Rab team raided the house of district BNP General Secretary Sahabuddin Sabu around 6:00am to arrest him, reports a correspondent from Laxmipur.

Sabu and his family tried to resist and the law enforcers shot Sabu in the leg before arresting him and his brother Azizul Karim, witnesses claimed.

As the news spread, activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal
...student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)...
, a pro-BNP student body, brought out a procession and engaged in a clash with the Rab team in Chawkbazar area of the town.

Rab personnel opened fire to bring the situation under control and three people were killed and at least 28 opposition men were maimed.

The dear departed were: Shihab Hossain, a Shibir activist; Sumon, BNP's youth wing Juba Dal activist; and Mahbubur Rahman, a trader.

The mob also beat a man, aged around 30, dead, suspecting him to be a Rab member.

Protesting the deaths, the activists of the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance along with locals cut off the Rab team, leaving them surrounded inside the Laxmipur police lines around noon. They blocked the roads from the police lines with logs.

#1  For a while there, I thought the last sentence was a teaser for the next installment of "RAB with Guns;" but after clicking on the headline the rest of the story came up; rubber bullets and RAB? what is that all about? kindler, gentler crossfire?

Since they refused exrtraction by helos, the reader is left to generate his/her own version of how they made their way to safety after being surrounded ( reminds me of how Sitting Bull escaped in a similar situation)

Bangladesh executes Islamist leader and convicted war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah
[INDEPENDENT.CO.UK] Bangladesh executed the Islamist leader and convicted war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah late last night, making him the first person to die for crimes against humanity during the country's struggle for independence with Pakistain in 1971.
Since the riots are already under way, what do they have to lose?
The move is widely expected to ignite a bitter reaction from his party's followers.

News of the death came hours after the Supreme Court of Bangladesh denied Mollah's petition to review the ruling. The country is now bracing itself for a violent backlash from Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer.
(JI), of which Mollah was the assistant secretary general.

It is also expected to deepen political turmoil across the country, where the ruling Awami League has been unable to reach agreement with the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP), an ally of JI, over acceptable conditions for holding forthcoming national elections.

The elections, scheduled for January, have been boycotted by the opposition, which has pressed for a neutral caretaker government and complained that their leaders and activists are being persecuted by the ruling party. Most of the men convicted for war crimes over the past four years are top opposition leaders.

Sheikh Yousuf Harun, chief government administrator in Dhaka, last night confirmed that Mollah had been hanged at 10.01pm local time. It caught the nation by surprise with much of the lead-up cloaked in secrecy. Earlier, jail authorities had not informed the media about the time when Mollah will be executed.

"Around 9.00pm, security was strengthened around the jail premises," said Iqbal Mahmud, a journalist in Bangladesh, who was near the central jail reporting on the incident. "Nobody except for media personnel were being allowed near the jail," he added.

Boko Haram leader claims Dec 2 attack in new video
[Pak Daily Times] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
's leader said in a video obtained by AFP on Thursday that the group was behind a daring raid on military installations in the north Nigerian city of Maiduguri earlier this month.

"Allah the Almighty has given us victory in the attack we launched inside Maiduguri (which was) called Borno in ancient times," said Abubakar Shekau in a 40-minute clip.

Speaking in Arabic, Hausa and Kanuri widely spoken in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, Shekau added: "We stormed the city and fought them (and) Allah blessed us with lots of booty."

The video, which was obtained through an intermediary, shows Shekau dressed in military fatigues with a turban and Kalashnikov assault rifle leaning on his chest.

He speaks for 19 minutes in all while the rest of the tape shows images of burning buildings and aircraft said to be from the December 2 attack in Maiduguri, which is capital of Borno state.

It also shows a waving guns the banned Islamist group says it seized in the attack, including dozens of Kalashnikovs and rockets.

The authenticity of the tape could not be verified independently.

Gunmen who arrived on pick-up trucks besieged an army and air force base, destroying aircraft, razing buildings and setting shops and petrol stations ablaze, witnesses said.

The early morning raid was seen as significant because the Nigerian military had previously claimed to have pushed the snuffies out of urban centres and into more remote, rural areas.

Local people reported that the attackers were carrying AK-47 assault rifles and rocket propelled grenades in the assault, which prompted the local authorities to impose a city-wide curfew.
