10-Year Old Girl With Suicide Vest Detained in Helmand
[Tolo News] A ten-year old girl was placed in durance vile
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
wearing a boom jacket in southern Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province on Sunday night, local officials said.

The small girl is known as Spozhmai and is from the Khanshin District of Helmand.

Based on initial investigations, the girl's brother was serving as a commander for the Taliban and he coerced her into carrying out a suicide kaboom on Afghan cops.

"My brother, who serves as a Taliban capo, asked me to wear my dress and then the suicide jacket," Spozhmai said. "After that he left me outside, I was there for several minutes and was shivering from cold, then I shouted and the security forces picked me up."

Local law enforcement in Helmand have said they believe the girl's brother is named Zahir, but goes by Hamid Saheb.

"It seems that the brother of the girl who serves as the Taliban capo has fled the area," said Hamidullah Sediqi, the chief of the Sixth Battalion of Afghan Border Police (ABP) in Helmand.

Reportedly, Spozhmai was unable to operate the button to detonate the boom jacket. Despite such issues with reliability, the Taliban has long used preadolescent, uneducated boys to carry out suicide kabooms. It is rare to find a young girl wrapped up in it though.

Spozhmai has been transferred to the bustling provincial capital of Lashkargah.

34 wounded evacuated from north Yemen clashes
[Al Ahram] The Red Thingy on Monday evacuated 34 people maimed in northern Yemen festivities between hardline Sunni Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
and Iranian catspaws, a statement said.

The 34 critically maimed were taken from Dammaj, in the Saada province, where Salafists have been besieged for months by Shiite Houthis, according to a statement from the International Committee of the Red Thingy .

They were airlifted along with a sick person to Sanaa, it said.

Two bodies were also evacuated, the statement said. A Salafist chief in Dammaj told AFP that the remains belonged to two Huthi fighters.

The Islamist leader said that a new ceasefire came into effect on Monday morning as a result of mediation led by a committee appointed by President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi.

Fighting has centred for months on a Salafist mosque and Koranic school in Dammaj.

But the conflict has spread in the northern provinces, embroiling Sunni tribes wary of the power of the Huthis, who have repeatedly been accused of receiving support from Iran.

The ICRC said it has managed to enter Dammaj six times since the fighting resumed on 24 October.

Bangladesh
Jamaat attacks Hindus in Jessore
[Dhaka Tribune] Jamaat-Shibir activists wearing masks launched a violent attack on Hindu community in Jessore on Sunday night, allegedly for voting for boat.

They set fire at a number of houses and looted some 107 residences of the Hindu community people at Malopara-Chapatala village under Abhaynagar upazila.

Witnesses said some 100 people of the locality had to jump into the Bhairab River around 4pm on Sunday in order to save themselves from the violent attack of the Jamaat-Shibir activists as they were equipped with firearms, crude bombs, machetes, iron bars and sticks.

The masked attackers were activists of illegal political party Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir

, alleged the victims and police.

Visiting the spot the, signs of attacks on several houses owned by fishermen was observed. Ashes were also seen as sign of arson attacks. Sign of panic was observed on the faces of the dwellers of the damaged houses, too.

A 15-member police team led by Abhaynagar cop shoppe Sub-Inspector Arifur Rahman was deployed in the area after the terrorist activities by over 100 miscreants of Jamaat-Shibir. The police officer said the situation was under control.

Jamaat-Shibir men carried out the attack on the Hindus after the elections, said the police official.

Local Lawmaker Ranjit Kumar Roy, who unofficially won Jessore 4 polls in the Sunday's election, said: "The attack was carried out under the influence of the police administration."

He also alleged that the officer in-charge of Abhaynagar cop shoppe patronised the attackers.

However Shifat Mehnaz, upazila nirbahi officer, Abhaynagar, did not seem to be aware of such a huge arson attack and looting incident carried out by the Jamaat-Shibir activists.

She said: "Miscreants attacked some 12 houses at Malopara under the upazila after the election on Sunday.

It is not clear who carried out the attacks," she added.

Entering into the residence of Dulal Biswas, the sign of arson attack was clearly seen. Utensils were scattered on the floor and ashes of burning households were still there.

Ranjita Biswas, wife of the owner of the house, told the Dhaka Tribune that the certificates of her daughter Anita Biswas, a third-year honours student of the department of political science at Government BL College, Khulna, was burned during the arson attack.

She said: "They also looted various valuables, including cash money and gold ornaments while conducting the mayhem.

Asim Sirkar, vice-president, Chapatala Krishi Shamabaya Samity, said: "We came under the fierce attack as we have cast our votes for boat."

The 10th general elections took place on Sunday. At least 22 people were killed during and after the polls in different parts of the country.

Charghat terrorised by upazila chairman
[Dhaka Tribune] The Maria village under Charghat upazila is a 50km drive from the Rajshahi city. In recent times, the village has become a stronghold of Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir
... the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh...

It was around 11am yesterday, when the Dhaka Tribune correspondent got down from an auto-rickshaw in front of the Maria Government Primary School, which was a polling centre a day before.

In no time, five young men rushed towards the auto-rickshaw and started shooting questions such as "who are you," "where are you from," "what do you want" and "where do you want to go."

It took this correspondent 20 minutes to finally convince them that he was a friend of one Shuvo, a student of the Rajshahi University and a resident of the village. This correspondent gathered information from Rajshahi city that there was someone named Shuvo in the village whose name would serve as his ticket for entering the village.

Sources said the area was currently being controlled by one Abu Sayed Chand, an alleged top criminal of the area who made it a Jamaat stronghold. Such is his dominance in the area that not even the local Awami League politician can take any action against him.

Chand is the BNP-Jamaat-backed chairman of the Charghat upazila parishad. He has his own group of criminals, locally known as "lathiyals" and owns significant amount of land properties in the area.

On the days preceding the elections, Chand's followers and the local Jamaat-Shibir men went from door-to-door in the village and warned people that if anyone went to the polling centre, they would be killed.

The result was that nobody dared to go anywhere near the polling centres set up in the area, despite heavy presence of the law enforcers.

When asked why they had not cast vote, Sukumar, a Hindu resident of the Thakurbari area, shot back: "Where are you from? Do not utter this word [vote] that you just told me. Just leave the area if your life is important to you."

Local Awami League politician Shahriar Alam told the Dhaka Tribune that Chand and his followers had sabotaged railway lines last month. He claimed that he had repeatedly asked law enforcers to take action against him but in vain.

"Law enforcers conducted several raids to arrest Chand and members of his criminal group. But those raids were nothing but eyewash," he alleged.

Shahriar happens to be the only Awami League leader left in the area. No other leader or activist of the ruling party could be found in the village. Local residents said they had all fled the area to save their lives from Chand's lathiyals (gang members) and their bamboo sticks.

An officer of the Charghat cop shoppe said: "Everyone knows about it [sabotage and violence]; but nobody dares to take action against him [Chand] because attacking on people was like felling trees for him."

The officer gave an example. "Chand's supporters attacked the Jhikar Government Primary School in the presence of joint force and army personnel. Other than firing some blank rounds, the law enforcers could not do anything. Chand's men felled more than a hundred mango trees in the area and beat up dozens of villagers with bamboo sticks. The news of this incident came in the media as well."

Although several cases have been filed against Chand and his men, the law enforcers have failed to arrest anyone.

When contacted over phone, Chand snubbed out all the allegations against him. "I am the upazila chairman. People always listen to what I say. I do not need to threaten anyone."

When asked why then a case was filed against him in connection with the Sardha rail sabotage, Chand said: "If police have any evidence against me why do they not arrest me? I am not hiding."

Golam Mortoza, OC of Charghat cop shoppe, told the Dhaka Tribune: "Nothing serious happened in the area on Sunday during the national elections."

About the Chand group, he claimed that police were looking for those who unleashed violence in the area and the joint forces had tossed in the calaboose

a couple of them.

Rajshahi district police chief (SP) Alamgir Kabir, claimed that law and order situation was totally under control.

our correspondents have reported post-polls violence taking place in Meherpur, Habiganj, Joypurhat, Pirojpur, Narayanganj, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Jessore districts.

In Dohar, under Dhaka 1 constituency, activists of Awami League and Jatiya Party
...aka Jatiya Front; a political party established by Bangladictator Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1986 to lend a veneer of respectability to his rule. Since nobody was amused he was forced to resign by popular demand in 1990. The party remains in existence with about a dozen seats in Bangla's parliament...
(JP) engaged in an hour-long clash that left five of them killed and 20 injured.

Police think the clash could be related to the election in which JP candidate Salma Islam grabbed a surprise victory against ruling party bigwig and former state minister for public works Abdul Mannan Khan.

The identities of the dear departed were confirmed as: Mohammad Mokbul Hossain, 35, nephew of local UP Chairman Alaluddin Mollah, Masud Khandaker, 30, Moksed Khandaker, 60, Aslam, 25, and Rezaul (age unknown).

Security was beefed up around the troubled region following the incident.

According to sources, top leaders of Dohar-Awami League unit were divided by their allegiance to the two candidates, with Vice-president Alauddin Mollah, also chairman of Bilashpur union, supporting Salma Islam while President Hukum Ali Chokdar supporting Abdul Mannan Khan.

Sumon Matabbar, an injured activist loyal to Alauddin, now under treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, described how the incident occurred.

"Around 9am, we were going to meet Alauddin Mollah at the Hazarbigha village. There were 20-25 of us there. Hukum Ali and his men intercepted us on the way but left us upon police's intervention.

"But after police left, they attacked us from behind. We ran for protection in nearby houses. They killed Moksed first and his son Masud and Mokbul later." All five deceased were activists of the Alauddin group.

Kamrul Islam Mia, officer in charge of Dohar cop shoppe, said they placed in durance vile

He was injured when rival party activists swooped on a victory procession of Awami League and Jubo League at the district's Gazooria bazar.

In Dinajpur, Md Asadullah, 18, an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir, died in hospital after police beat him up following a Jamaat-Awami League clash at a polling centre in Birganj upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The clash ensued after Jamaat-Shibir activists tried to occupy the polling centre.

Meanwhile,

activists of Awami League's rebel candidate Mokbul Hossain, who successfully defeated party nominee Abdul Khaleque, attacked the latter's office and residence in Gangni upazila of Meherpur yesterday.

They vandalised eight cycle of violences parked in front of Khaleque's residence and ransacked furniture around 12:30pm. Following the incident, members of the BGB took Mokbul, upazila chairman Shafiqul Alam and municipality mayor Ahammad Ali to the UNO office for questioning.

Witnesses said the incident occurred after a victory parade at the Rezaul Chattar point in which Mokbul called upon his supporters to oust Khaleque from local politics. Police detained 11 activists in this connection.

In Magura 2, supporters of rebel candidate Kutubullah Hossen Mian Kuti ransacked 12 shops after Kuti was defeated by Awami League candidate Prof MS Akber.

In Baniachang of Habiganj, a clash between the Awami League and JP activists left around 50 injured. The clash occurred following an altercation between the two groups in a polling centre the day before, police said.

China-Japan-Koreas
Is Kim Jong-un's Aunt Dead?
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's aunt and widow of executed eminence grise Jang Song-taek is believed to have died, possibly by her own hand.

A government source here on Sunday said Kim Kyong-hui, who has been out of the public eye either committed suicide or died from a heart attack.

The source said intelligence services here believe Kim is dead but have not been able to confirm this, though they are also trying to find out whether she went abroad for medical treatment.

Another government official said, "There are many rumors going around about Kim Kyong-hui, but we're not yet able to confirm any of them."

Kim Kyong-hui is former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's only sister and the daughter of nation founder Kim Il-sung.

She was last seen at the 65th anniversary of North Korea on Sept. 9 of last year and with Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju at a musical performance on Sept. 10. Despite the execution of her powerful husband, her name was on a list of dignitaries planning the funeral for a high-ranking Workers Party official who died in mid-December, so intelligence services here believed she was alive and well.

But she did not show up for the second anniversary of the death of Kim Jong-il on Dec. 17, raising speculation that she was ill or forced into isolation.

Born in 1946, she is 68 this year and apparently suffered from alcoholism and depression due to her troubled marriage with Jang and the suicide of her daughter in 2006.

She went to Moscow in 2011 for medical treatment. A government official said, "It is clear that Kim Kyong-hui received medical treatment on her toe and there are rumors that she was also treated for heart problems or dementia." Other rumors said she received medical treatment in Singapore in 2012.

America's 'Jihad Jane' Jailed for 10 Years
[An Nahar] An American woman nicknamed "Jihad Jane" was jugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
for 10 years on Monday after plotting to carry out deadly attacks in Europe and South Asia including the murder of a Swedish cartoonist, U.S. justice officials said.

Pennsylvania woman Colleen LaRose, 50, a convert to Islam, had already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, conspiracy to kill in a foreign country, making false statements and attempted identity theft.

"This case clearly underscores the evolving nature of the terrorist threat we now face in this country," said Zane David Memeger, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

"The Internet has made it easier for those who want to attack the American way of life to identify like-minded individuals to carry out their terroristic plans."

An accomplice of LaRose, Jamie Ramirez, who has also pleaded guilty, is to be sentenced on Wednesday.

According to court documents, LaRose and her conspirators had recruited men on the Internet to carry out a "violent jihad" in South Asia and Europe.

She also sought to recruit women on the Internet who had passports and the ability to travel freely around Europe.

LaRose also received a direct order to kill Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, who had outraged many Moslems by drawing the Prophet Mohammed's head on a dog's body.

LaRose agreed to carry out the murder, believing that her American citizenship and appearance would help her blend in as she attempted the killing.

She later traveled to Europe and tracked Vilks online in an effort to complete the crime but was unsuccessful.

In addition to 10 years in prison, federal judge Petrese Tucker also fined LaRose $2,500, and placed her on five years parole after her release from prison.

She could be released in a little more four years, taking into account good behavior and the years she's already served.

The relatively light sentence may have been due to her cooperation with Sherlocks.

She was taken into custody in October 2009, but her arrest was not made public until March 2010 after the Irish police jugged

Blast Kills 10 in Pakistan Tribal Elder's Home
[An Nahar] At least 10 people were killed and another nine maimed Monday in an kaboom at the home of a tribal leader in a restive area of northwest Pakistain, officials said.

The blast came in a remote village in Khyber tribal district, close to the Afghan border in Tirah Valley, which last year saw fierce fighting between the Pak military and Talibs.

"The initial information suggests that the blast triggered by explosives killed at least 10 people including three children and maimed nine others," a senior local administration official, Nasir Khan, told AFP.

He said the kaboom occurred in the reception area of the home of a local tribal elder.

"We are trying to ascertain the exact nature of the blast," Khan said.

Another local administration official confirmed the incident and casualties.

Last year saw a concerted military push in Tirah Valley, which is hemmed in by steep mountains and riddled with caves, and has been a stronghold for Islamist faceless myrmidons in Khyber.

Iraq
Iraq tribal leader says Qaeda fighters have quit Fallujah
[Al Ahram] Al-Qaeda-linked fighters have departed Iraq's Fallujah and it is now in the hands of Sunni rustics, a senior tribal sheikh said on Monday.

"There is no ISIL in the city," Sheikh Ali al-Hammad told AFP by telephone, referring to Al-Qaeda-linked group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. "They all left."

"The gunnies inside are from the sons of the tribes, and they are here to defend" the city, he said, without elaborating.

Fallujah has been out of government control for days, and Iraqi officials have said that ISIL gunnies are holding the city.

Gunmen have also seized parts of the Anbar picturesque provincial capital Ramadi, farther west.

It is the first time gunnies have exercised such open control in major cities since the height of the bloody insurgency that followed the US-led invasion of 2003.

[An Nahar] An unknown attacker on Monday hurled a hand grenade at an army vehicle near the Barrad al-Bisar area in Tripoli

Syria rebels lay siege to Qaeda-linked jihadists
[Al Ahram] Syrian rebels were laying siege Monday to jihadists in their northern stronghold of Raqa, as they waged an all-out offensive aimed at crushing the Al-Qaeda affiliate they accuse of abuses.

Raqa is the latest front in a fight pitting a broad coalition of moderates and Islamists opposed to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Terror of Aleppo ...
against the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

As the fighting raged, the National Coalition re-elected Ahmad Jarba to lead the opposition bloc, less than three weeks before slated peace talks in Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels attacking ISIL in Raqa also "released 50 Syrian prisoners" held by the Sunni krazed killers.

Raqa is the only scenic provincial capital to have fallen out of regime hands since the conflict erupted as Assad unleashed a bloody crackdown against a revolt that began in March 2011.

The city soon fell into the grip of ISIL, which entered the Syrian war in late spring last year to join the fight against Assad's regime.

Rebels initially welcomed them, but tensions grew as ISIL was accused of imposing a reign of terror in areas it operates, especially Raqa.

ISIL is said to hold hundreds of prisoners in their now besieged Raqa headquarters, and foreign journalists elsewhere in the province.

Turkish photographer Bunyamin Aygun, kidnapped in December while covering Syria, was freed Sunday, and 10 Syrian Kurds kidnapped at ISIL checkpoints escaped, said the Observatory.

The Raqa offensive comes after three powerful rebel alliances launched Friday what activists called a second "revolution".

The rebels have since made speedy advances, expelling ISIL from checkpoints, neighbourhoods, bases and villages in Aleppo, Idlib and Hama provinces.

ISIL withdrew Monday from Tal Abyad near Turkey, said the Observatory.

A key complaint against ISIL among rebels -- including the Islamic Front, the Syrian Revolutionaries Front and Mujahedeen Army -- is that its jihadists want hegemony over opposition areas.

Activists have also reported horrific abuses by ISIL, including widespread kidnappings, torture, liquidations and public executions.

And on Monday, the body of a decapitated child was found near ISIL's headquarters in Kafranbel, Idlib, the Observatory said.

While many opponents of Assad have welcomed news of the advance on ISIL, some fear it might "distract" the rebels from fighting his regime, which continued to shell opposition-held areas on Monday.

A security official in Damascus told AFP the fighting between the rebels and ISIL was "expected, and will become more violent".

He added that, as different rebel factions receive assistance from different sources, "nothing unites them except terrorism".

Assad's regime brands all its opponents -- including activists -- as "terrorists".

The Observatory said "the main group laying siege to ISIL's headquarters in Raqa is Al-Nusra Front," which like ISIL is affiliated to Al-Qaeda but seen as more moderate.

ISIL and Al-Nusra have fought each other in recent months, after ISIL announced it was Al-Qaeda's representative in Syria. Al-Nusra had been operating in Syria longer, and refused to work under ISIL's command.

Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
then ordered ISIL's Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to work with Al-Nusra -- but he refused. The two groups have since had, at best, tense relations, and at worst they have engaged in open fighting.

The fighting comes as ISIL took over Fallujah city in neighbouring Iraq, in a new sign of the regionalisation of the Syrian conflict.

On Sunday in Istanbul, where the opposition holds its meetings, the National Coalition re-elected Jarba as its leader.

Jarba, who is seen as close to key rebel backer Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, was first elected to head the opposition bloc in July, and will now lead it for another six months.

His re-election comes at a sensitive time, less than three weeks before scheduled peace talks in Switzerland that would bring rebels and regime representatives to the table.

The Coalition will discuss on Monday whether to take part in the peace talks, though a key group -- the Syrian National Council -- has already announced it will boycott the so-called Geneva 2 process.

The Syrian conflict has killed more than 130,000 people in nearly three years, and forced millions more to flee their homes.
