Mortar fire lands near Mogadishu Presidential Palace
MOGADISHU -- Unidentified militants have fired mortar shells at built-up areas near the heavily-fortified Villa Somalia Presidential compound in Mogadishu on Monday evening, Garowe Online reports.
Being president of Somalia can't be worth it...
Witnesses say, the sounds of heavy gunfire followed the mortar attacks on pre-planned targets in Mogadishu's neighborhoods.

Mortar shells are said to have landed in an area close to Villa Somalia where Mogadishu-based government offices are situated but no independent sources have verified the casualty figures and whether the target was the presidential compound. Residents of Hamar-Jajab, Hamar-Weyne and Boondheere districts tell that similar mortar attacks occurred in their vicinities, revealing the extent of Mogadishu's volatile security situation.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses reported two deaths and several wounded persons as federal government officials declined to comment on the latest deadly incident.

Suspected Assassin of Tunisia's Belaid Killed
[An Nahar] The suspected Islamist assassin of Tunisian opposition leader Chokri Belaid, whose death last February sparked social and political upheaval, has been killed in a police raid, the government said Tuesday.

Belaid was a charismatic leftist politician and virulent critic of the Islamist party Ennahda then in power. His murder triggered massive anti-government protests and a crisis from which Tunisia has only recently started to emerge.

His was the first of two political liquidations last year, both blamed on jihadists, which eventually forced Ennahda to step down in January in the face of accusations from the mainly secular opposition that it had failed to tackle a surge of Islamist extremism since the Arab Spring revolution of 2011.

Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou said the National Guard killed "seven heavily armed terrorists" in an operation launched Monday afternoon at a house in a Tunis suburb, among them Kamel Gadhgadhi.

"Gadhgadhi is the one who carried out the political liquidation of Chokri Belaid," the minister told a news conference, adding that five of the seven turbans had been identified.

"It's the best present that we could give Tunisians," Ben Jeddou added.

Security forces surrounded the building in Raoued after receiving a tip-off that heavily armed turbans were holed up in it.

In the ensuing gunbattle, which lasted until Tuesday morning, a policeman was also killed.

"We wanted to avoid casualties and we asked them to give themselves up. (But) each of them was carrying automatic weapons, grenades and boom jackets," Ben Jeddou said, adding that security forces were met with "violent resistance."

Ministry front man Mohammed Ali Aroui showed pictures taken inside the house where the siege took place, including of Gadhgadhi.

Security forces recovered a large weapons cache inside, Aroui said, adding that the turbans were probably planning to carry out an attack.

Tunisians have been preparing to commemorate the anniversary on Thursday of Belaid's murder.

He was bumped off at close range outside his home, with the authorities blaming jihadists from Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya, Tunisia and Yemen, with the Libyan and Tunisian versions currently most active...
, a Salafist group suspected of links to al-Qaeda that was blacklisted as a terrorist organization last summer.

But the group never claimed the attack, and neither the assassin nor the organisers had ever been found, with only suspected accomplices detained.

Relatives of the slain politician, who at the time directly blamed Ennahda for the attack, were planning a presser on Thursday and a candlelit vigil in central Tunis.

Speaking before the police raid on Monday, Belaid's widow Basma Khalfaoui accused Ennahda of hiding key documents in the murder inquiry and said she was expecting strong measures from a government of independents that replaced the Islamist-led administration late last month.

"We don't know anything (about what really happened). All scenarios are possible," she told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Activists have also called for a demonstration on Saturday, to mark the anniversary of Belaid's burial, when a general strike brought Tunisia to a standstill and tens of thousands turned out to pay homage to him.

Belaid's murder was followed by an intensification of violence between security forces and jihadist groups, with some 20 soldiers and police potted last year.

The opposition seized upon his liquidation as proof that Ennahda had failed to contain bad boy Islamist groups suppressed under veteran strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who was ousted in the 2011 uprising.

Ennahda's then prime minister Hamadi Jebali tried to form a cabinet of technocrats in a bid to end the crisis, but failed to do so in the face of opposition from his party and finally resigned.

Opposition parties were furious at the appointment of another Islamist, Ali Larayedh, to replace Jebali, a choice that deepened political divisions, especially after the liquidation on July 25 of opposition MP Mohammed Brahmi, also by suspected jihadists.

Ennahda, which won Tunisia's first free elections in October 2011, continued to insist on its right to lead the coalition government.

But last month, under a hard-won agreement to end the political turmoil, it finally ceded power to the government of technocrats headed by premier Mehdi Jomaa and tasked with leading the country to fresh elections.

Gunmen Kill 30 in Central Nigeria Attack
[An Nahar] Gunmen killed about 30 people in an early morning raid on two villages in central Nigeria, witnesses said on Tuesday, in the latest violence to hit the region.

The police in Plateau state, which has been hit by repeated communal violence, confirmed the attack but could not provide details of casualties.

One witness, Rufus Gyang, said the attack happened at about 3:00 am (0200 GMT) and the gunnies "started shooting sporadically, killing innocent villagers in their sleep".

Nineteen people were killed in Rajat and 11 in Atakar villages, all in the Riyom local government area of the state, he added.

More than 60 houses were razed in the attack, while tens of others were maimed, he added.

Local politician Daniel Dem confirmed the killing and added that two of the victims were security agents deployed to the area.

Authorities said last month that ethnic Fulani herdsmen were suspected of killing 34 people in a similar raid.

State Information Commissioner Yiljap Abraham said that 34 people were killed, 24 injured and 600 people displaced in the attack by gunnies on Shonong village on January 6.

He said that 56 houses were burned down during the raid.

Plateau lies in Nigeria's so-called Middle Belt, where the country's majority Moslem north meets the predominantly Christian south.

More than 10,000 people are thought to have died in Plateau and neighboring Kaduna state since 1992 and several thousand since 2010, Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...
said in December last year.

Many grievances are centered around perceived favoritism and/or discrimination among Hausa-Fulani Moslems and Christian groups, as well disputes over cattle grazing rights.

Human Rights Watch has said not enough is being done to tackle the underlying causes of the violence, despite the identities of the perpetrators on both sides being widely known locally.

Boko Haram 'Deadline' Not Literal
[An Nahar] Nigeria's military on Tuesday said that a call by the country's top military officer for a swift end to the Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
insurgency had been "taken too literally".
"We didn't actually mean 'dead.'"
Air Marshal Alex Badeh was appointed chief of defense staff last month and on January 20 said: "The security situation in the northeast must be brought to a complete stop before April 2014."
"More like a 'redline,' I think."
Since the statement was made, Badeh's home state of Adamawa in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, has seen a number of suspected Boko Haram attacks, including one on a church on January 26 which killed 26.

An attack on a busy market in neighboring Borno on the same day killed 52, while last weekend a Mohammedan holy man who had previously criticized the group was rubbed out in the northern city of Zaria.

Defense front man Chris Olukolade issued a statement on Tuesday entitled "Terrorism: DHQ (Defense Headquarters) clarifies CDS (chief of defense staff) comment on April deadline".

In it, he acknowledged that Badeh's assertion had generated debate as well as "interpretation and reaction, especially from the media", without denying that the words reported had been said.

But he added: "The remarks by the CDS was meant to motivate commanders and troops to work harder towards restoration of normality as envisaged in the states under Emergency rule.

"Unfortunately, the charge has been taken too literally to mean (a) definite promise to end terrorism by April."

Adamawa, Borno and Yobe have been under emergency rule since May last year in a bid to stop the insurgency, which has claimed thousands of lives since 2009.

Parliament approved a six-month extension to the special powers on November 20.

But attacks have continued, many in more remote, rural areas of northeast Nigeria, although krazed killer fighters carried out an early morning raid in the Borno state capital Maiduguri in December.

That attack and a boom-mobile that destroyed a market in the city in January, killing 19, saw President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
replace his top brass on January 16.

Olukolade said that by referring to the end of April, Badeh was "simply being optimistic" about his new senior colleagues' determination to tackle the issue.

It was also a call to restore order to the country to avoid having to seek a further extension to emergency powers in April and getting stuck in a potential parliamentary logjam, he added.

Badeh had said he wanted to avoid having to "go and start begging and lobbying" parliament.

"The CDS statement should not be mistaken for a false sense of hope or mere grandstanding as have been imputed by some individuals," Olukolade added.

"Ending terrorism anywhere has never been and cannot be precisely determined by a directive."

Bomb, bullets kill 2 soldiers on Yemen bus
Gunmen raked a military bus with gunfire in Yemen’s capital Sanaa moments before it was hit by a bomb, leaving two soldiers dead and 12 wounded, witnesses and an official said.
Yemen: come for the bullets, stay for the bomb...
The attack is the latest in a series of bombs and shootings targeting military personnel in Yemen, which is struggling to achieve a political transition that aims to turn the republic into a federation.

The attack on the bus comes a day after rockets and explosions shook the capital, including one near the French embassy.

A military official said the explosion targeted a bus transporting soldiers and officers in the capital’s southern neighbourhood of Dar Salam. Fourteen soldiers were wounded, two of whom later succumbed to their injuries, the official said, adding that the bus had been carrying 18 passengers.

Witnesses said that two terrorists gunmen in a car opened fire at the bus moments before the blast.

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.

Police officer Rizwan Khan said that the hotel is frequented mostly by Shias who visit Imambargah Alamdar next door. Most of the dead and maimed were Shias, he added.

The blast came as talks between government negotiators and representatives from the Pak Taliban designed to end years of fighting in the northwest were delayed.

Confirming the corpse count, Superintendent Police (SP) City Muhammad Faisal Mukhtar said it was a suicide kaboom.

Provincial Health Minister Shaukat Yousufzai earlier told media representatives that eight people were killed and 42 others injured in the suicide kaboom. "Six of the dead have been identified," he said.

Shafqat Malik, an officer of Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) said that about six kilos of explosives were used in the blast. He said hands and legs of the jacket wallah have been recovered from the site which were sent for laboratory and DNA tests. He said other forensic evidences have also been collected.

Eyewitness Musadiq Ali told Dawn.com, "I was on the first floor when a huge blast occurred and I fell on the ground." He said that he rushed to the spot and witnessed scores of people in the "pool of blood."

Musharraf Hussain from Parachinar, who was on the spot as well, said the blast destroyed three shops and the eating kiosks in front of the Pak Hotel and Imambargah Alamdar inside Qissakhwani Bazaar.

We shifted the injured and dead to the hospital on our own as no rescue worker reached the spot soon after the blast.

Injured in reportedly critical condition were taken to Lady Reading Hospital where an emergency was imposed.

Earlier today, Haji Sardar Ali, a prominent Shia leader was rubbed out in the city, sparking a protest outside the LRH where his body was taken.

Roadside bomb targets military, media convoy in Mindanao
A roadside bomb exploded on Tuesday as a convoy of military and media vehicles passed a village in the southern Philippine province of Maguindanao. The explosion happened near Raja Buayan town where two armored vehicles were escorting a truckload of soldiers pursuing militants from the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).

There were no reports of casualties or injuries and no one claimed responsibility for the attack. But the 6th Infantry Division quickly blamed the BIFF and their sympathizers for the bombing.

Filipino journalists, who were tailing the military convoy, witnessed the powerful blast and said they saw a black smoke billowing from the roadside several blocks away from one of the two armored personnel carriers escorting the troops.

...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...

"Ghazi Abbas Mahmoud was maimed by gunshots in front of Tripoli's Shahine Hospital where he works," LBCI television said.
"Look at the bright side, Mahmoud: it's a short trip to the ER!"
"Shaddup and hurry! I'm bleeding to death..."
Arab Democratic Party's spokesperson Abdul Latif Saleh confirmed these reports as the state-run National News Agency noted that the shooters fled to an unknown destination.

More than 22 attacks have targeted Jabal Mohsen residents in several areas of Tripoli in recent months.

In one of the most recent assaults, Omran Suleiman was shot in the legs on Friday on al-Mallouleh road in the northern city.

Tripoli's two rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen have been rocked by around 20 rounds of deadly sectarian fighting in recent months.

[AnNahar] Shells fired from Syria rained down Tuesday evening on several border towns in the Akkar district, damaging some houses, as gunshots targeted a highway inside Leb.

"Shells landed in the outskirts of the towns of al-Noura, Qashlaq and Amar al-Baikat during festivities on the Syrian side of the border," Leb's National News Agency reported.

Gunshots also targeted the highway that links al-Abboudiyeh to the town of Menjez.

Later on Tuesday, shelling again targeted Amar al-Baikat's outskirts and the peripheries of the town of Ain Tinta, according to NNA.

"A shell landed in the Sharbila forest near the Family Restaurant in the Akkar town of Deir Adawiya," the agency said, adding that shells had also fell near a cafe in the town of al-Douseh.

Meanwhile,

"shrapnel damaged the house of Khaled Abdul Hamid in the town of Amar al-Baikat."

On Sunday, two houses were badly damaged by shells fired from Syria on the Akkar town of al-Uwaynat as Syrian warplanes reportedly violated the Lebanese airspace over several towns in the region.

A Syrian man was killed while two Lebanese citizens were maimed in shelling that targeted the town of Mashta Hammoud on Friday.

Also on Friday, a gunfire exchange took place between troops and gunnies on the border.

Since the Syrian crisis broke out in March 2011, border areas in northern and eastern Leb have been struck by frequent cross-border shelling and festivities which have left several people dead and scores other maimed.

[AnNahar] An Israeli bulldozer crossed on Tuesday the technical fence off the southern town of Rmeish under the protection of a military unit, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The bulldozer was to carry out scraping activities near the U.N.-drawn Blue Line, NNA said.
Smoothing the dirt. Real provocative...
Last week, an Israeli unit crossed the technical fence in the Wadi al-Qatmoun region near Rmeish. The unit, consisting of three Merkava tanks, carried out a patrol in the area.

A week earlier, Israeli troops dug a dirt road between the Israeli border and the technical fence in the same area.

NNA also said that several Israeli soldiers deployed near the technical fence in the area of Kfarkila on Tuesday "provoking" passers-by, by pointing their weapons at them and taking photographs of them.

Arrest Warrant Issued Against Al-Atrash Over Terrorist Activities
[AnNahar] A military examining magistrate issued on Tuesday an arrest warrant against Sheikh Omar al-Atrash for carrying out terrorist activities, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said Judge Nabil Wehbe questioned al-Atrash over his role in transporting jacket wallahs to Leb.

Al-Atrash, 24, has also been charged with detonating bombs and explosive-rigged vehicles, attacking the army in Majdelyoun and al-Awwali bridge areas in the southern city of Sidon in December and launching rockets on Israel.

He has also admitted to transporting suicide bombers in a Cherokee to attack the army in Majdelyoun and al-Awwali bridge and of transferring four rockets from Syria in August last year to launch them towards Israel.
