Police: slain Shaboob killed counter-terrorism agent
Police in Malindi have said a ballistic analysis has confirmed that slain Al Shabaab suspect Ali Mohamed Delawa, killed counter-terrorism agent Ahmed Abdalla Bakhshwein on January 28 this year using a stolen US rifle.

Delawa was killed on February 1, and police say an analysis of the US Colt .45mm rifle and 5 rounds of ammunition found on him when he was murdered in Ngala estate Malindi, link him to several gun and grenade attacks in Kwale. Bakhshwein was a former police reservist, who also assisted US and Kenya counter-terrorism efforts in Somalia and on the Kenyan coast.

Delawa was also on the police’s most wanted list with alleged links to Al Shabaab and Al Qaeda. Police claim that he belonged to a terrorist cell that was exterminating counter-terrorism agents.

On Thursday, Malindi District Criminal Investigation Officer Mr John Ndungu said Delawa “was in a list of most wanted criminals” and alleged that he was involved in Bakhshwein’s killing and a series of criminal attacks in Kwale and Diani towns on the Kenyan south coast. Mr Ndungu said a report from government ballistic expert revealed that the gun recovered from Delawa after he was shot dead by a police officer was the one used to kill Bakshwein and had also been used in other south coast robberies.

”The ballistic experts have indeed confirmed that the firearm recovered from the shot thugs was the one that was used in Malindi, Kwale and Diani shootings,” Mr Ndungu noted adding that closed Circuit Television had also captured Delawa shooting Bakshwein in his car.

Two of Delawa’s accomplice escaped on a motorbike after Bakhshwein’s killing near Malindi police station. They had gunshot wounds, according to police but are yet to be apprehended.

According to police sources Delawa was a member of a terror group and he had recently entered the country from Somalia where he had undergone a military training. The colt rifle is believed to have been stolen from US Special Forces in Somalia in the 1990s.

Kaboom near Mogadishu airport
Seven people were killed when a car bomb exploded near the entrance of Mogadishu’s heavily-guarded international airport where many foreign diplomats are based, police said.

Armed group al-Shabaab told Al Jazeera that they detonated the bomb and that the target was a United Nations convoy.

“We claim responsibility for the Martyrdom operation. We have killed three white UN staff and injured one,” Abdul Aziz Musab, the group’s military operations spokesman, said.

The spokesman also told Al Jazeera the group had fired mortars at the presidential palace on Wednesday.

“A car laden with explosives was remotely exploded in front of a tea shop just outside the airport,” senior police officer Colonel Abdikadir Ahmed told the Reuters news agency. “So far we have confirmed 7 people dead and 15 others injured. Many cars got burnt. We believe al-Shabab was behind the attack.”

Ahmed Omar, a member of airport staff, told Reuters a earth-shattering kaboom deafening blast rang out near the airport and then the “sky was covered with smoke”.

Although al-Shabab were pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011 by African Union peacekeeping troops, they have carried out several bombings in Mogadishu targeting government officials and foreign nationals.

Journalists targeted in Tripoli
[MAGHAREBIA] In the latest assault on Libyan media, gunnies attacked the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
headquarters of al-Assema TV early Wednesday (February 12th).

Three rocket-propelled grenades were fired at the building, lightly wounding a guard, AFP reported. The assailants ransacked offices and kidnapped several employees for a few hours.

The channel has been accused by Islamists of urging people to demonstrate against the General National Congress (GNC). The privately owned station was also assaulted last March.

On Sunday, Al-Wataniya TV news hounds Ibrahim Abdel-Gader, Sadam Al-Rashidi and Ibrahim Al-Wafi, along with Abdel-Gader's brothers Ramadan and Shaban, were kidnapped on Tripoli's Airport Road.

The five men from Sabha have not been seen since.

Tarablus editor and LANA news hound Younes Ali Younes was also briefly kidnapped. Younes was taken Monday and released a day later unharmed.

"The party behind the kidnapping is still unknown, and so are the reasons. It may be because of the attitudes and opinions he writes in the newspaper," his brother Meftah Ben Younes told Magharebia in a telephone conversation.

LANA director Abdel Basset Abudiah said a colleague was with Younes at the time of the abduction.

"They were surprised by a car from which four to five people came out, including some wearing military uniforms and snatched Younes. He said that when he tried to speak with them, they threatened to arrest him too," Abudiah said.

Abudiah pointed out that no one knew the reason for the kidnapping.

"Our news features are credible because they are from official sources and we deal with information professionally and patiently," the LANA director pointed out.

Abudiah asked for protection for the media that had suffered "more than once from attacks due to news that some believe is not in their favour".

Targeting the media is a direct infringement on freedom of expression, he added.

A statement issued by LANA condemned the kidnapping and considered it "incompatible with international conventions and international laws, [and] all guarantors of the freedom of the media".

"Such criminal acts will not deter us from continuing our national and professional duties in spreading the bare truth and transmitting it to the domestic and international public neutrally and professionally without bias to a particular party or person. We put the interests of the country first and foremost," the statement added.

It also asked that "the competent authorities in the Ministry of Interior take responsibility in finding and tracking the kidnappers and those who stand behind them".

Africa Subsaharan
Boko Haram Raid Kills Nine Nigeria Troops
[An Nahar] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
gunnies killed nine Nigerian soldiers after launching an ambush on a military convoy in the troubled northeast, a local official and a hospital source told Agence La Belle France Prese Thursday.

The troops were responding to a distress call late Wednesday in the Madagali area of Adamawa state when they were bombarded by Salafist tough guys armed with anti-aircraft weapons mounted on the backs of 4X4 trucks, said Maina Ularamu, a local government official in the area.

"There was heavy fighting yesterday evening between soldiers and Boko Haram gunnies," Ularamu said.

He added that the Islamists "ambushed a military convoy on a mission to avert a planned attack... on Izhe village."

Adamawa is one of three northeastern states which has been under emergency rule since May, when the military launched a major operation to crush the Islamist uprising.

A source at the Federal Medical center in the state capital Yola told AFP the hospital "received nine bodies of military personnel on (Wednesday) night from Madagali district."

Ularamu said the fierce shootout that followed the Boko Haram ambush caused "casualties on both sides" but could not provide figures.

The clash was the latest in Boko Haram's krazed killer insurgency which has caused thousands of deaths since 2009, especially in the northeast.

On Tuesday, in neighboring Borno state, at least 43 people were killed in two separate attacks blamed on the Islamists.

The deadliest raid struck the town of Konduga, where scores of gunnies razed more than half the village, spraying gunfire on fleeing civilians and killing 39.

Boko Haram has said it is fighting to create a strict Islamic state in the mainly Mohammedan northern half of Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and top oil producer.

14 'Mostly Qaida' Inmates Flee Yemen Jail after Attack
[An Nahar] Fourteen inmates, mostly from al-Qaeda, managed to escape from the central prison in Yemen's capital Thursday when gunnies launched a deadly assault on the facility, officials said.

Seven coppers and three gunnies were killed, according to the interior ministry and security officials.

Another two coppers and two gunnies were maimed, and one of the attackers was captured, the ministry said.

The two-pronged attack began when an explosives-laden vehicle went kaboom! at the facility's eastern entrance, breaching a hole in the prison fence, security officials said.

At the same time, gunnies attacked guards at the main entrance, creating a diversion that allowed some of the prisoners to escape through the hole in the fence.

One official told Agence La Belle France Presse that "14, mostly al-Qaeda inmates" had fled.

Nasser al-Wuhayshi, chief of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula -- seen by the United States as the network's deadliest franchise -- vowed in August to free imprisoned members of his network.

Wuhayshi himself beat feet from the same Sanaa prison with 22 other members of AQAP in February 2006 and was named as the group's leader a year later.

The AQAP detainees escaped through a 44-meter (145-foot) tunnel they dug between their cell and a nearby mosque.

Yemen Hands Over 29 'Qaida' Militants
[An Nahar] Yemen has handed over 29 Saudis wanted for suspected links to al-Qaeda, the interior ministry announced on Thursday.

"As part of joint efforts between security services in the two countries, the kingdom has received 29 Saudis... (who) had joined al-Qaeda in Yemen," interior ministry front man General Mansur al-Turki told Agence La Belle France Presse.

, Yemen's oil-rich neighbor, he said.

Nine others were on trial in the kingdom when they fled, said Turki.

The defense ministry in Sanaa announced the handover this week without giving details.

Saudi authorities are hunting for dozens of the ultra-conservative kingdom's citizens who have joined al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), based in Yemen.

Former prisoners at the U.S. Guantanamo prison who had been returned to Saudi Arabia for rehabilitation in December 2006 later escaped to Yemen, two years ago after completing a reform program.

Saudi and Yemeni al-Qaeda branches merged in January 2009 to form AQAP, posing a serious threat to Western interests across the region.

Attackers fire rockets at prison in Sa'naa
Attackers fired rocket-propelled grenades at the main prison in Yemen's capital on Thursday in a failed attempt to free inmates, security sources and witnesses said, Reuters reported.
I've seen this movie, it's on all the late-night channels lately...
Explosions and gunfire between security forces and the attackers could be heard several kilometers away from the prison in northern Sanaa, which has al Qaeda members among its inmates. The biggest explosion rattled windows in the area. No one claimed responsibility for the attack.

There were no immediate reports of casualties but witnesses saw ambulances driving towards the high-security prison, which police secured after the 30-minute gunfight.

Attackers fired at least one rocket at a police patrol vehicle outside the main prison gates, a police officer at the scene said. Police sealed off the road to the airport which runs through the neighborhood where the prison is located, close to the Interior Ministry. Special forces and armed personnel carriers were being sent in to chase the attackers, a security source said. The attackers failed to enter the prison.

[Tolo News] At least 13 persons were killed and 47 others, including civilians, were maimed Thursday morning in an kaboom targeting a police bus near Razzaqabad police training college in Bloody Karachi

's Shah Latif Town.

The attack came early in the morning. "Apparently an car bomb hit the police bus transporting officials for security duty," Muhammad Iqbal, a senior police official, told AFP.

Rescue teams reached the site of attack whereas the victims were shifted to Jinnah Hospital and a private hospital nearby in the locality.

Doctor Seemi Jamali at Karachi's Jinnah hospital confirmed that there were at least 11 dead. At least 47 maimed officers were hospitalised, 10 of whom were at death's door, she said.

SSP Farooq Awan, who heads a special investigative unit, said the bus was making a U-turn after leaving a training centre when a small van struck it.

According to initial reports, 25 to 30 kilograms of explosives were used in the attack.

Police said that more than 50 officers were boarding the vehicle at the time of attack, which occurred in the eastern district of Karachi close to the national highway.

"Around 50-55 coppers were boarding the bus and going somewhere for duty from their training centre," Iqbal said adding that police suspect it was a suicide kaboom.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The rear portion of the targeted bus was completely destroyed in the kaboom.

Moreover, additional contingents of police, Rangers and the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) reached the spot and cordoned off the area as a probe into the incident went underway.

The intensive blast was heard in a radius of two kilometres.

on Thursday, officials said.

The incident happened in Tump town, Kechh district, some 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) southwest of Quetta, the capital of the oil and gas rich province bordering Iran and Afghanistan.

"The deputy commissioner and the assistant commissioner of Kechh district were returning after a meeting with Iranian border officials when they were intercepted by dozens of gunnies," provincial home secretary Adil Gilani told AFP.

He said the gunnies overpowered at least 18 staff and security personnel accompanying the two officials and ordered the convoy to follow them.

The gunnies later allowed the staff and security personnel to go but took away the deputy commissioner and assistant commissioner.

Another senior local official Abdul Fateh Bhangar confirmed the incident.

No group has so far grabbed credit but Balochistan, one of Pakistain's most unstable provinces, is rife with separatist and Islamist gunnies and is plagued by sectarian bloodshed.

The attackers were said to have come on foot and escaped without facing any resistance. The villagers avoided saying anything on record fearing myrmidons' reprisal but a peace volunteer said the men had been killed in the presence of women of the family. The attackers also took away weapons and the women's jewellery, he said.

Peshawar Rural Circle DSP Fazal Wahid Khan told news hounds that the turbans had earlier killed a relative of the victims and one of the attackers had been killed in an encounter on Feb 2.

He said the incident was a reaction to the killing in the encounter.

Asif Khan, who leads the Bazidkhel Qaumi Lashkar, told this news hound that the government had abandoned peace workers who were neither getting arms and ammunition nor ration, although they were called for help whenever police needed them during action against the Taliban.

"The family was on the 'hit list' of the Taliban and a Khyber Agency-based myrmidon group of Mangal Bagh
...a former bus driver, now head of the Deobandi bandido group Lashkar-e-Islam and the Terror of Khyber Agency...
because they supported police in encounters with terrorists," he said.

He said the gunnies now had supporters in the suburbs of Peshawar and could easily escape after committing a crime.

"We know those who are facilitating the turbans in various villages and have pointed them out to the law-enforcement agencies but action has not been taken against them. We are running short of arms and ammunition and our volunteers are in dire need of ration," he said.

He said the 'Shahid Group' of Taliban was very active in parts of Peshawar and the government must act against them; otherwise the rest of the peace bodies' chiefs would also be attacked.

The people, he said, aspired for peace and wanted the negotiations between the government and Taliban to succeed.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and Governor Engineer Shaukatullah termed the attack the worst act of inhumanity.

The governor said no effort would be spared to nab the elements involved in the crime and bring them to justice.

The chief minister announced a compensation of Rs50,000 under the Shuhada Package for the heir of each victim.

He said anti-state elements had been exposed after the launching of negotiations with the Taliban and foreseeing their failure they were trying to demoralise people through their terrorist activities.

Five policemen sentenced to death for killing four traders
[DAWN] Five coppers belonging to the Anti-Car-Lifting Cell (ACLC) were sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court on Wednesday for killing four Baloch traders in a staged encounter.

The then station house officer of the ACLC, Malik Irshad Hussain, and constables Zafar Ali, Zahoor Khan, Zaheer Mirza and Noor Mohammad Shah were found guilty of killing the four traders of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
-- Haji Mohammad Tahir Achakzai, Obaidullah Khan Tareen, Mohammad Ibrahim Achakzai, and Zainuddin Khan Achakzai -- on the night of Dec 31, 2008 on Khalid bin Waleed Road in Ferozabad.

Judge Saleem Raza Baloch of the ATC-III read out the conviction order after recording evidence of witnesses and arguments from both sides.

The court also issued directives for confiscating property of the convicts.

The court ruled that all the accused persons being members of a police team had collectively with their common intention committed the murder of four traders; thus they were sentenced to death on four counts.

The killing had prompted a chain of protests particularly in Balochistan and especially when the police registered a manslaughter case against the police team and also booked the slain traders in three fabricated cases in order to cover up their high-handedness.

However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
the Supreme Court took suo motu
...a legal term, from the Latin. Roughly translated it means I saw what you did, you bastard...
notice and ordered the authorities to register a premeditated murder case against the police party. Subsequently, a case was registered on a complaint of Haji Lala Khan, the father of one of the four victims.

On Wednesday, four accused were brought to court from prison, while the fifth one, Zafar, was present in court on bail.

The judge read out his verdict and handed down capital punishment to the convicts, but maintained that its implementation was subjected to the confirmation of the high court.

After the verdict, the complainant broke into tears.

Expressing contentment over the verdict, he said justice was done. The defence side said that they would challenge the verdict in the high court.

Book 'im, Mahmoud!
by the police during a raid in the capital's suburbs on Wednesday.

According to the police, the arrest was made during a raid at Ittefaq Colony in Tarnol.

The suspects were identified as natives of Katlang in Mardan and Bajaur Agency, aka Turban Central
...Smallest of the agencies in FATA. The Agency administration is located in Khar. Bajaur is inhabited almost exclusively by Tarkani Pashtuns, which are divided into multiple bickering subtribes. Its 52 km border border with Afghanistan's Kunar Province makes it of strategic importance to Pakistain's strategic depth...
and had been living in the colony since 2007.

During the raid the police also seized 5kg explosives. However there were no detonators.

The police said the affiliation of the suspects with any banned bad boy outfit is yet to be established. Besides "they are not experts in making bomb".

The suspects were experimenting on blowing up the explosive without using detonators, and had carried out two unsuccessful experiments.

The father of one suspect was a retired hawldar of Frontier Constabulary, and was now a labourer with a contractor.

During interrogation one of the suspects told police that they were experimenting on a new method of carrying out kabooms and used it at a worship place in Tarnol.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
his accomplice gave a contradictory statement and said they were trying to make explosives to uproot trees and later sell them for money, the police said.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli soldiers shoot and kill Gazook, wound another
[Haaretz] Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian and wounded another on Thursday in the Gaza Strip, local hospital officials said.

Relatives who rushed to a Gaza City hospital said Ibrahim Mansour, 26, was collecting gravel to sell from his donkey cart when he was shot dead. The Israeli military said soldiers fired at Palestinians tampering with Israel's border security fence.
We're innocent gravel merchants, why do they hate us ?
"The soldiers took action in order to distance the Palestinians from the fence. They called on them to stop and fired in the air. When that did not help, they fired at the main instigator," an Israeli military spokesman said.
Hey you there, gravel merchant. Move along or we'll shoot !
He said that since the beginning of the year, three explosive devices were detonated against Israeli forces patrolling the fence.
Three too many, keep an eye on the gravel merchants and anyone else coming near the fence.
The Islamist Hamas group, which runs the Gaza Strip, and other Palestinian factions have voiced commitment to a ceasefire reached with Israel in 2012, but have cautioned that Israeli "violations" could cause the truce to collapse.
"Truce to collapse"....as planned.
Israel's army said on Twitter that 28 rockets were fired from Gaza in January alone. Israel has mounted air strikes against militants it holds responsible for such attacks.
