Dr. Abdullah Survives Taliban Ambush

survived a Taliban attack on Wednesday on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway, his campaign said.

The attack occurred on Wednesday about 4:30 pm, when a group of gunnies targeted Abdullah's convoy while he was returning to Kabul from an electoral campaign event in Nangarhar

province.

"Yesterday after participating in a gathering...Dr Abdullah was on his way from Nangarhar province to Kabul, when he was targeted in the Tangi Abrasham area of Sorobi district," said campaign front man Fazal Rahman Oria. "Fortunately no one was hurt and then Abdullah went to Sorobi district and gave a speech."

Oria condemned the attack, and accused the government of neglecting in providing security for the candidates.

"Unfortunately I must say that the government should provide security and arrange forces in the area, which the government didn't," Oria added.

Ministry of Interior Spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told TOLOnews that the attack was on police forces and not Abdullah. Sediqqi added that candidates should cooperate with the ministry and that police forces took control of the area after the attack.

Taliban front man Zabiullah Mujahid grabbed credit for the attack and said that three of Abdullah's personal guards were killed in the attack.

Gunmen storm Presidential compound in Mogadishu
Photos of the attack here.
MOGADISHU -- Suspected Shaboobs Al Shabaab gunmen have launched a daylight assault on Villa Somalia Presidential Compound in Mogadishu, with a suicide bomber firstly ramming an explosive-laden car into the highly fortified zone on Friday, Garowe Online reports.

According to witnesses, shortly after the car bomb attack men wearing military uniform fired live ammunitions at Somali government officials who attended Jum'a prayer at a mosque in the presidential compound, triggering a gun battle that left the secretary of the Prime Minister's office Mohamoud Idhacase and former National Intelligence and Security Agency Chief Gen. Nuur Shirbow dead.

Sources within Somalia Federal Government officials tell Garowe Online News Agency that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud haven't today arrived at the presidential compound mosque for Juma prayer.

The bodies of the attackers who bluffed their way past the gate of the presidential place are lying on the ground under the presence of heavily armed government soldiers.

Speaking on Mogadishu-based radio station, Federal Government of Somalia's National Security Minister Abdikarin Hussein Gulled said the security in and around the presidential palace remains tight.

"The anti-peace elements attempted cowardly attack which was organized from Boondheere district side but frankly speaking, the attack was foiled and the security forces prevented it from happening," noted Gulled.

Mogadishu's Huriwaa district have been a spot for clashes between Al Shabaab fighters and allied forces over the past nights. The militant group stepped up military-style ambushes, planned shootout and suicide bombings in Mogadishu, making the security situation extremely volatile.

Speaking to the media, Al Shabaab operations spokesman Abdiasis Abu Muscab unveiled that special Al Shabaab fighters carried out a planned attack inside the presidential compound.

"Our special forces today attacked the so-called Presidential palace and they killed senior government officials," said Al Shabaab spokesman. He didn't disclosed the casualty figures on their side as reports of many deaths are emerging from the scene of the attack.

A journalist working for Mogadishu-based media house, Radio Kulmiye sustained major injuries to his upper body during the firefight between the attackers and Somali government soldiers. Ahmed Saed Ahmed is being treated at a hospital in Mogadishu, relatives and colleagues said.

Qaaqaa leader Othman Milaiqtah seriously injured; assassination attempt alleged
[Libya Herald] Othman Milaiqtah, the commander of the Qaaqaa Brigade, has been gravely injured late this afternoon in what is variously being called an liquidation attempt or a car accident.

Abdulmajid Milaiqtah, the chairman of the National Forces Alliance Steering Committee, has told the Ajwa Liblad Facebook news agency that his brother had survived an liquidation attempt and that he was now in intensive care in a Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
hospital.

Some Zintani sources also say there was an liquidation bid. Others, however, say that the Qaaqaa commander was injured in a car crash in Ras Al-Afaa near Azziziya, in which Salah Al-Madani, nephew of the celebrated Zintan martyr Mohammed Al-Madani, was killed. He was the brother of Ibrahim AL-Madani, a Zintan brigade leader.

A leading Military Police source told the Libya Herald that there were no clear details as yet. They had had two conflicting reports. The first was that Salah Al-Madani had had an argument with Milaiqtah and shot him, and then been rubbed out by Milaiqtah's guard. The other was that the car being driven by Madani had crashed in an ordinary accident.

Various reports claim that the shooting incident took place at the 7 April camp in Tripoli, Qaaqaa's headquarters.

There are also conflicting reports about Milaiqtah's present whereabouts. Sources in Zintan claim that he has been taken to hospital to Tunisia, not in Tripoli.

Earlier this afternoon, Milaiqtah had announced that he was going to give a press statement. But he did not. According to a news hound who was waiting for the statement, Milaiqtah abruptly left, apparently to meet a group of elders. It was while driving to meet them that the accident/liquidation attempt supposedly occurred.

Two days ago, the Qaaqaa brigade issued an ultimatum to Congress members saying that if they did not resign within five hours they would be enjugged
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!

Europe
Dutch Nix Passports for 10 Would-Be Syria Jihadists
[An Nahar] At least 10 young Dutch citizens suspected of wanting to become jihadist fighters in Syria's deadly conflict have been refused passports over the "last months", the government's anti-terror organization said on Friday.

"It is a very effective way to prevent them from leaving," Jochgem van Opstal, front man for the National Anti-Terror and Safety Coordinator (NCTV) agency told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The NCTV's announcement comes amid increased worries by Dutch authorities about young citizens leaving to join the jihad, or holy war in Syria.

More than 100 young Dutch citizens have so-far traveled to Syria to fight against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
's forces in the near three-year conflict in which 140,000 people have now died, according to NGO figures.

At least seven Dutch jihadists have been killed in fighting so far, the Dutch media reported.

Van Opstal said young Dutch Mohammedans returned from Syria "traumatized and radicalized, with an increased knowledge of weapons and that can be dangerous".

Although Dutch citizens carry an identity card which allows travel anywhere within Europe, a passport is needed for the Middle East, Van Opstal pointed out.

"You can't just walk into Syria," he said.

Dutch popular broadsheet De Telegraaf recently reported about an 18-year-old woman from the southern city of Maastricht who wanted to travel to Syria with her husband but was refused a passport.

The woman planned to challenge the decision in court, the newspaper said.

Dutch law states that a passport can be refused "in cases where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a citizen plans to commit acts outside the Netherlands that threaten the country's safety or that of its allies".

Last year, the NCTV raised the threat level to the Netherlands to "substantial" as a result of would-be jihadists travelling to Syria.

Upon their return, they are "closely being monitored," the NCTV added.

India-Pakistan
Three traders shot dead in targeted killings
[DAWN] RAWALPINDI: Gunmen riding cycle of violences rubbed out three persons, and injured three others, in two separate drive-by gun attacks in the city on Friday. The killers escaped in both cases.

Family feud was behind the first attack, which took place at dawn in the Race Course precinct. But police suspect sectarian enmity behind the second attack, which took place in the Purana Qila section of Raja Bazaar, just metres away from the ruins of Taleemul Koran madressah-mosque-market complex, after the Friday prayers.

"Apparently, it is sectarian violence. However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
we are investigating the murder case from different angles," SHO Nadeem Zafar of Banni cop shoppe told Dawn.

Two unidentified motorcyclists arrived at the Dubai Chadder shop in Purana Qila selling material used by the Shia community in its religious rituals and started firing, killing two men inside the shop and injuring three others, he said.

Their shooting killed Mohammad Faisal alias Sunny and Ramzan Qureshi and injured Haji Nasir, Umer and Fareed.

Ironically, the shopkeepers the gunnies killed belonged to the Sunni sect.

What looked paradoxical to the police, however, was that Dubai Chadder opened for business when it used to observe Friday as weekly holiday and when no Shia rituals, or gatherings, were scheduled for the day.

Whatever facts police investigations may upturn, the immediate impact of the targeted murders was that panic gripped the Raja Bazaar area. Big contingents of police were rushed there to control the situation as terrified shopkeepers started pulling down their shutters.

Many noted that the unfortunate gun attack took place on the eve of the ceremonial launch of the reconstruction of the Taleemul Koran seminary and the mosque and Madina Market attached to it, which were burnt down during sectarian violence in the old city last November.

Rawalpindi Traders Association President Sharjeel Mir condemned Friday's shooting and asked the Punjab government, which is rebuilding the complex, to ensure protection of the traders in worsening law and order situation.

"We are still suffering the tragic consequences of the last sectarian outburst and this incident has added to the traders' pain and concerns," he said.

In the early morning incident, milk shop owner Manzoor Hussain was rubbed out by two cycle of violence riders.

His son, Matloob Hussain, filed a murder case with the Race Course cop shoppe, accusing Amin and Ahmed of the crime in a family feud and litigation.

Iraq
10 killed in Iraq's violence
Ten people were killed and 10 others wounded in two violent incidents in eastern and central Iraq on Thursday, police source said, Xinhua reported.

In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a fierce clash erupted when armed men attacked an army base in south of the city Sa'diyah, some 120 km northeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, leaving two soldiers killed and six others wounded, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The two-hour fighting also resulted in the killing of five gunmen, the source said.

In a separate incident, a roadside bomb struck a patrol of a government-backed Sahwa paramilitary group in Nibai area, some 70 km north of Baghdad, killing three group members and wounding four others, a local police source anonymously told Xinhua.

Dozens killed as mortars hit town in Iraq
A mortar attack has struck a busy area in a mainly Shia town south of Iraq's capital, killing at least 22 people and wounding more than 50, authorities said.

The five mortar rounds slammed into a busy market, a residential building and a parking lot around 7pm local time as people returned home from work and shopped in the town of Mussayab, police and hospital officials said. Police said it appeared the rounds came from the nearby Sunni-dominated town of Jurf al-Sakr, though it wasn't immediately clear who fired them, Al Jazeera reported.

Mussayab, about 60km south of Baghdad, is in an area that holds a mix of Sunnis and Shias and has been a flashpoint for some of the worst sectarian violence in recent years.

On Tuesday, a parked car bomb in the town killed five civilians and wounded 13, authorities said. In 2009, a female suicide bomber targeted Shia pilgrims there, killing at least 40 people.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack, but Sunni fighters frequently target Shia areas and security forces.

[Jihad Watch] While President Champ and John Kerry pressure Israel into making still more self-defeating concessions to the “Palestinians,” Hamas pursues violent jihad. Either way, Israel faces jihad. Surely even Champ and Kerry must not believe at this point that their negotiations will bring some kind of lasting peace to the jihadis and Israel. But they probably do believe that the negotiations will bring them votes and donors.

Meanwhile, it’s interesting that the inmates of the “world’s largest concentration camp” are able to get such sophisticated weaponry.

#1  Gazan anti-aircraft missile ‘probably’ from Libya

Israeli official says Gaddafi’s downfall allowed Hamas to procure huge supply of missiles

A top Israeli defense official said Gaza is being flooded with sophisticated weapons from Libya and that the anti-aircraft missile fired last week at an Israeli helicopter likely originated there.

Yossi Kuperwasser, who directs the Ministry of Strategic Affairs, says “significant” numbers of weapons have been smuggled into the territory from Libya since the fall last year of dictator Moammar Gadhafi. The country is awash in weapons after the eight-month civil war and has weakened central authority.

Palestinian militants in Gaza launched a shoulder-fired Strela missile at an Israeli helicopter last week, but missed. It was the first such launch from Gaza.

Kuperwasser said Wednesday that Israel has long assumed that Gaza militants have kept such weapons, but probably only fired them after they amassed a large enough stockpile.

#2  Popular Mechanics 7 Sep 2011 article.
UPDATE: CNN originally reported that shoulder-mounted SA-24s have gone missing in Libya. But arms control experts now tell PM that there’s no evidence of gripstocks for the missiles in Libya. That means that any SA-24s looted from Gaddafi’s stockpiles could be vehicle-fired, but not shoulder-fired. This makes them less of a terrorist threat.

That said, the proliferation of these missiles on the black market is still a large concern, especially in other parts of the world where gripstocks might be available that would allow the weapons to be used as Man Portable Air Defense (MANPAD) missiles. Even in Libya, sources tell PM, there is evidence of shoulder-firing capability for the less-sophisticated SA-7s.

Israeli soldiers, Palestinians clash in Hebron
[SEATTLEPI] A Paleostinian medical official says at least two protesters have been injured in festivities with Israeli soldiers in the biblical West Bank city of Hebron.

Aid Jabari says the injured were hit by rubber bullets during a protest Friday to mark the anniversary of the closure of a shopping street that runs along Jewish settler compounds. The Israeli military says three protesters were tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
for throwing rocks.

The military closed Shuhada street, citing security reasons, after a 1994 attack in which a settler shot and killed 29 Moslem worshippers at a mosque.

Paleostinians say the central street's closure is disruptive and helps cement Israeli control over the area.

Tensions run high in Hebron where about 500 Israelis live amid 170,000 Paleostinians.

NPA militants claim attacks against Philippine troops
Communist militants took responsibility for attacking Philippine troops in the southern provinces of Davao del Sur and North Cotabato that killed at least eight infantrymen.

Isabel Fermiza, a spokesperson for the New People's Army, said militants bombed an army detachment in Makilala town and ambushed troops in Digos City.

Femiza said, "Eight fascist troops were killed while nine were wounded from the command detonated explosives and actual combat. The NPA confiscated one M14 rifle, several backpacks and medical kits. One Red fighter, Ka Jiboy, was martyred and two other NPA guerrillas were wounded. The offensives were aimed at the 39th Infantry Battalion's forward deployment in Makilala and Tulunan towns in North Cotabato, expanding its former territorial jurisdiction which covered all towns of Davao del Sur. Arrogant and fascist to the core, the 39th Infantry Battalion swaggers as the 10th Infantry Division's biggest battalion, in a desperate move to widen its area of abuses."

The 10th Infantry Division had earlier said that Davao del Sur was free from militant influence. There was no immediate reaction from army officials about Fermiza's allegations.

Syria Opposition: Brother of Peace Talks Aide Arrested
[An Nahar] The brother of a member of Syria's opposition delegation to the failed Geneva II peace talks was nabbed
Please don't kill me!
Friday at a security checkpoint in Damascus, an opposition source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"The Syrian authorities have arrested Mahmud Sabra, the 34-year-old brother of lawyer Mohammed Sabra, a member of the opposition delegation to the Geneva talks," said the source, who asked not to be identified.

"He was detained at a security services checkpoint in the Sayyida Zeinab area. He used to live in Jaramana (southeast of Damascus) but has been in hiding for a long time," the source said.

"We are convinced he was arrested as a way of exerting pressure on Mohammed Sabra, the delegation's legal adviser."

Fighting Rages in Northeast Damascus
[An Nahar] Fierce festivities raged Friday between Syrian troops and rebels in northeastern Damascus as government warplanes raided myrmidon strongholds, a monitoring group said.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least seven rebels were killed in regime shelling and air raids in the district of Jobar.

Violence has escalated in Jobar since February 9 when a Jordanian jacket wallah from the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
killed 32 government forces.

Since then festivities have intensified between the rebels and forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
, said the Observatory which relies on a network of activists and medics on the ground for its reports.

Friday's shelling also spilled into the district of Qabun further north of Jobar, the Observatory said.

In other violence, regime forces stormed the village of Khirbet al-Naqus in the central province of Hama on Friday and reportedly killed nine men, said the monitoring group.

It quoted activists as saying the men were "summarily executed" in the village square.

Five children were killed, meanwhile, in regime air raids in the northern province of Idlib.

Woman Held for Trying to Recruit Females for al-Nusra
[An Nahar] A Syrian woman has been tossed in the clink
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
in the Bekaa for trying to recruit women for the turban al-Nusra Front while a runaway was maimed in a clash with the army in al-Masnaa, state-run National News Agency reported.

"The army arrested in the town of al-Nabi Sheet a Syrian woman identified as Umm Jamal on suspicion of her collaboration with al-Nusra Front," NNA said.

The woman used to work in the town in the past and she raised suspicions after her return to the same job, the agency noted.

"During interrogation, the woman confessed that she was seeking to recruit women to assist the Front in its acts of sabotage," NNA added.

Al-Jadeed television said the woman was arrested three days ago.

In a separate incident, "the runaway Abdul Hayy Saleh Ammoun was maimed in an exchange of gunfire with an army patrol following a chase on the al-Masnaa road" in the Bekaa, NNA said.

The agency said the incident took place near al-Akramiyeh's intersection and that the maimed suspect was rushed to the Hrawi state-run hospital in al-Maalqa. But al-Jadeed said the man was killed when a hand grenade that was in his possession went kaboom! during the chase.

On February 12, the army intercepted a booby-trapped vehicle on the Arsal-al-Labweh road in the Bekaa region.

The Army Command announced in a statement that the vehicle had arrived in Leb from Syria's Yabrud region. Containing three women, the car was going to be transported to Beirut where it was to be handed over to would-be suicide-bombers.

Quoting military sources, LBCI television said the women confessed to plotting "a triple bombing during which the car and two jacket wallahs were supposed to blow up."

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
two of the three women were freed on Saturday afternoon.

"State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr ordered the release of Hala Rayed and Khadijeh Audeh for not having any links with the incident," NNA said.

The third suspect, Joumana Hmayyed, was kept in jug, according to the state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...

Extremist organizations, including a group calling itself al-Nusra Front in Leb, have grabbed credit for a series of suicide kabooms in recent months against areas considered strongholds of Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...

Dozens of non-combatants were killed and scores were maimed in the bombings.

Lebanon detains top suspect in car bomb campaign
Lebanese security forces said on Friday they had detained a Sunni Muslim militant suspected of recruiting suicide bombers and assembling car bombs for a radical group behind attacks on Iranian interests in Beirut, Reuters reported.

Hassan Abu Afleh, they said, was suspected of being a leading figure in the Abdullah Azzam Brigades - a movement that has carried out bombings to punish Iran and Tehran's Shi'ite Lebanese ally Hezbollah for their role in the Syrian war. The Brigades claimed responsibility for Wednesday's twin suicide attack near the Iranian cultural center in Beirut that killed eight people, and an assault on the Iranian embassy in November.

Abu Afleh's arrest in Beirut on Saturday followed last week's detention of Naim Abbas, another leading militant who, according to a security source, worked for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant - a hardline Sunni group that is fighting in Syria.

Abu Afleh was arrested in a predominantly Sunni district of Beirut, said security services. Details had not emerged sooner because of the ongoing investigation, they added.

Another suspected leader of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades died while in the custody of the Lebanese security forces in January. Majid bin Muhammad al-Majid, a Saudi national who was wanted by authorities in his own country, had been suffering from acute cirrhosis kidney failure.

The Abdullah Azzam Brigades is named after an associate of the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
