I have posted articles from time to time, but never bothered to figure out how to post anything but a naked link. Obviously, there is a way to post text from the article. So, do tell.

And is there a preview function? Since the thing will post in the future, I am always terrified it is screwed up in some way that I cannot anticipate or fix prior to publication in the morning.

Afghanistan
Suicide Bomber Kills 15 in Faryab
[Tolo News] Fifteen non-combatants were killed and 23 others were maimed including women and kiddies when a jacket wallah detonated in a market in Faryab province in northern Afghanistan early on Tuesday, local officials said.

The bomber was riding a rickshaw and detonated in a market in Maimana, capital of Faryab, around 8:30 am local time, the Faryab police chief Toryalai Abdiani told TOLOnews.

Abdiani said the target was national police forces.

"The attack took place... in a market where police soldiers were standing to collect their salaries from Kabul Bank," Toryalai said.

One child and one woman were maimed in the attack and 2 police soldiers were maimed, Toryalai added.

The victims were taken to a nearby hospital in the province.

Africa Horn
Somali Shebab Suicide Commandos Attack Buuloburde Hotel
[An Nahar] Somalia's Al-Qaeda linked Shabaab attacked a hotel crowded with army officers in a southern town days after African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
troops celebrated its capture from the Islamists, security officials said Tuesday.

A jacket wallah rammed a car packed full of explosives into the hotel, with gunnies then attacking, killing at least eight people, residents said.

The attack is the latest by the Shabaab, launched in apparent retaliation to a new offensive to root them out of the troubled country.

Troops from neighboring countries, which also face attacks on their own soil, are also fighting the Shabaab in Somalia.

"There was a suicide kaboom involving turbans at a hotel in Buulo Burde," security official Sulieman Adam told AFP, of the attack that took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

"Four of the attackers were also killed," he added.

AU envoy to Somalia, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, condemned the "cowardly attack" and confirmed that both AU troops from Djibouti and Somali troops had been killed, but without giving exact numbers.

AU soldiers, who are fighting the Shabaab alongside Somali government troops, captured the small town from the Islamists last week.

Shabaab front man Abdiaziz Abu Musab grabbed credit for the attack, boasting of killing bigwigs and telling AFP that the Shabaab were still in control of parts of the town.

Residents said that at least eight people were killed in the attack, but there was no official toll.

"A suicide bomber drove his car packed with explosives into the hotel, and there was a big kaboom, and then gunfire afterwards," said resident Moalim Mohammed Adan.

Abdirahman Qalafe, who lives in a nearby village, confirmed the toll of eight, adding he had seen a military helicopter evacuate the maimed.

"The helicopter landed and took around 11 maimed people away," he said.

The Shabaab also grabbed credit for a boom-mobile on Monday targeting an AU convoy just outside the Somali capital, boasting of killing seven including three foreigners, although the AU force said there were no casualties.

"These are hit and run attacks... They are losing ground, but are trying to terrorize the people," AU force front man Ali Houmed said.

The U.N.-backed AU force this month launched a fresh offensive against Shabaab bases, with the gunnies largely fleeing ahead of the assault, only to later stage guerrilla attacks.

Deadly Shootout in Lawless City in Sudan's Darfur
[An Nahar] A Sudanese policeman was killed in a shootout with gangsters in North Darfur capital El Fasher on Tuesday in the latest sign of growing lawlessness in the state, sources said.

A medical source at the hospital in El Fasher told AFP the dead policeman was brought in with two maimed colleagues.

"There was shooting in the eastern El Fasher market area, between police and gangsters," a resident said.

Another local source said an exchange of fire apparently occurred between security forces and a narco gang.

North Darfur state governor Osman Kbir survived an ambush on Saturday during a visit to a town north of El Fasher briefly seized by rebels, a source familiar with the incident said.

Kbir has denied the ambush in state-linked media.

Since late February, rebels have also attacked an area in the southeast corner of Kbir's state, while another uprising erupted in the far west, where local sources said militia loyal to Musa Hilal took control of Saraf Omra town.

Rebel-government battles are no longer the main source of violence in Darfur, where forces of Evil from ethnic minority groups launched an uprising against the country's Arab elites in 2003.

Over the past two years, Sudan's deteriorating economy has led to worsening crime, as well as deadly festivities between rival Arab tribes, a February report by UN chief the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
said.

Africa North
Egypt Police Stop Pro-Morsi Press Conference
[An Nahar] Egyptian police prevented supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
from holding a presser on Tuesday, asking journalists to leave the venue.

The presser was called by the Islamist Anti-Coup Alliance in response to an official report on a deadly police crackdown on pro-Morsi protest camps in August.

An AFP correspondent who went to attend found police deployed outside the venue.

They took down the names of journalists in attendance and advised the AFP correspondent to leave.

An activist of the Islamist group said two organizers were incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!

Security officials confirmed the police intervention but not the arrests.

Police dispersed two Islamist protest camps in Cairo on August 14, a month after the army overthrew Morsi, killing hundreds of his supporters in festivities.

The National Council for Human Rights said in a report released on Monday that 632 people were killed in one of the protest camps, including eight coppers.

It said that exchanges of fire erupted after "some armed elements suddenly opened fire" and killed an officer calling on protesters to disperse.

Tuesday's pro-Morsi presser was called to "reply to the falsified claims" made in the report, an email invitation said.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Count Doku titzup
[DAWN] Chechen rebel leader Doku Count Doku Umarov
... Self-styled first emir of the Caucasus Emirate. Count Doku has announced that his forces will not target civilians, but qualified that statement by saying there aren't any civilians in Russia...
, whose Caucasus Emirate group grabbed credit for a string of deadly attacks in Russia over the last years, has been killed, a pro-insurgency website said Tuesday.

"The leadership of the Caucasus Emirate officially announces the martyrdom of Emir Dokku Abu Usman," the Kavkaz Center website said, using the Arabised nom-de-guerre of Umarov.
U-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu!!!
It gave no details of how he was said to have been killed and there was no confirmation from the Russian authorities who are usually keen to rapidly boast of the "liquidation" of top Caucasus myrmidons.

"Foreign media periodically publish information about the liquidation of Doku Umarov but the Russian special services at this moment do not have such information and will not comment on it," the National Anti-Terror Committee said in a statement to the state RIA Novosti news agency.

Kavkaz Center published a statement saying that the Caucasus Emirate had appointed a myrmidon named as Sheikh Ali Abu Mukhammad as its new chief
But Kavkaz Center published a statement saying that the Caucasus Emirate had appointed a myrmidon named as Sheikh Ali Abu Mukhammad as its new chief.

The website also posted a video said to be of the bearded myrmidon confirming the death of Umarov and outlining his leadership strategy for the Caucasus Emirate, which wants to impose an Islamic state across the mainly Mohammedan Northern Caucasus.

Ali Abu Mukhammad was shown in battle fatigues at some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location with a gun behind him resting on a rock. He spoke in a mixture of Arabic and heavily-accented Russian. His origins and citizenship were not made clear.

"I want to inform you that our brother (Doku Umarov) has left this world,"he said. "Our condolences to his family and the Mohammedan world.""His soul is with the green birds in paradise," he added.

Ali Abu Mukhammad said he did not consider himself worthy of the duty but had taken it on after being asked "by the brothers".

"I will take on the responsibility myself," he said, saying the "jihad" by the Caucasus Emirate group would continue.

Feared myrmidon leader

Umarov became head of the guerrilla movement in Chechnya in June 2006 after its previous leader Abdul-Khalim Saidullayev was killed by the Russian military.

He was known as an ally of notorious rebel chief Shamil Basayev, who grabbed credit for dozens of attacks, including the 2004 Beslan school hostage crisis in which more than 330 people were killed, many of them children. Basayev was killed by Russian forces in July 2006.

The predominantly Mohammedan region declared independence from Moscow after the Soviet collapse in 1991 and then fought two bloody wars with the federal government before Moscow finally re-established control.

Umarov served as secretary of Chechnya's national security council from 1997 to 1998, during a short-lived period between the two wars when Moscow tolerated the region's autonomy.

As head of the Caucasus Emirate he grabbed credit for numerous atrocities inside and outside the Caucasus.

The Caucasus Emirate took responsibility for an attack on a Moscow-Saint Petersburg train in 2009 that left 27 dead.

It claimed the Moscow metro suicide kabooms of 2010 and the 2011 suicide kaboom on Domodedovo airport that left dozens dead.

Like other rebel leaders, Umarov's death has been proclaimed several times by the Russian authorities. He was first declared killed in August 2000 during a special operation by Russian forces.

Iraq
Iraq Bombings Kill 10
[An Nahar] Attacks in Storied Baghdad and across central Iraq, including seven boom-mobiles, killed at least 10 people on Tuesday amid a surge in violence ahead of a general election next month.

The blasts, which also maimed nearly 50 people, come with Iraq suffering its worst level of violence since 2008, when the country was emerging from brutal sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite Mohammedans.

The surge in unrest has been driven principally by discontent among Iraq's Sunni Arab minority and by the civil war in neighboring Syria, and has killed more than 2,000 people already this year, according to an AFP tally.

Attacks on Tuesday struck in Storied Baghdad, as well as in nearby Karbala, Diyala, Salaheddin, Babil and Wasit provinces, killing at least 10 people and wounding 47, security and medical officials said.

Separate blasts in the capital -- a boom-mobile and a roadside kaboom -- left three people dead, while vehicles rigged with explosives were also set off near Karbala, Hilla, Baiji and Hafriyah, killing six more.

A magnetic "sticky bomb" in Diyala province killed a municipal council member.

Southeast Asia
Bridge bomb kills Thai policeman
One police officer was killed and another seriously injured in a bomb explosion in Pattani province yesterday morning. The attack happened as six policemen on a truck and a motorcycle crossing a bridge. A home-made bomb was planted at one end of the bridge and was detonated remotely.

This follows a separate attack on Monday in which a man and his three-year-old son were gunned down at their home. His assailants fired shots at the man shortly after he parked his motorcycle. The bullets also hit his son. The victims had just returned from a concert at a local school.

The man died at the scene, while his son was seriously injured. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, police think the killing of a former special branch police officer in Yala province on Monday was the work of the same gunmen who earlier gunned down a military ranger and three rubber latex buyers in the past two months. Pol Snr Sgt Maj Ekapong Sakdayuth was gunned down and his body set on fire at a gas station he owned.

Police said two suspects had been held for questioning under martial law. Police investigators believe the killing of the former police officer might have been carried out by the same gunmen responsible for the killing of a ranger on Jan 2. The same shooters are also thought to be responsible for a gun attack in the same district on Feb 22 in which three latex buyers were killed and another seriously injured.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
After Yabrud Capture, Syria Army Advances West
[An Nahar] The Syrian army has taken a several hills southwest of the former rebel stronghold of Yabrud as they seek to secure territory between there and the Lebanese border, a security source said Tuesday.

On Sunday, backed by fighters from Leb's Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
and local militia, they seized Yabrud after a month of shelling and air strikes.

They are now moving to secure the area along the nearby border with Leb, which has been a key supply route for the opposition, allowing them to transport fighters and weapons.

"The army is heading in the direction of Ras al-Ain," which is close to the border, the source in Damascus told AFP after taking the hills between there and Yabrud.

They also plan to seize the villages of Rankus, south of Yabrud, and Flita and Ras al-Maara, to its northwest.

Elsewhere, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said regime planes bombed the northern city of Aleppo, killing at least four people, including two children, in the Shaar district.

The violence in Aleppo came as Marcell Shehwaro, a prominent female activist detained a day earlier by rebels for refusing to wear the Islamic headscarf, was released.

The Army of Mujahedeen, which had detained Shehwaro and her friend Mohammad Khalili, issued a statement "apologizing in the strongest terms" for the arrests.

Nearby, the Britannia-based Observatory said troops battled Islamist opposition forces, including the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front, leaving at least seven people dead on the two sides.

In the Damascus area, five people were killed by opposition mortar fire in several districts, state news agency SANA reported.

Four people were killed in the Jaramana suburb, southeast of the capital, and another in the city itself, SANA said.

'In Vengeance of Yabrud' Message Found Written in Blood of Slain Syrian
[An Nahar] A Syrian was found on Monday stabbed to death in North Metn district with a message next to him saying he was killed to avenge the fall of the central Syrian town of Yabrud, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said Ali Moussa Harmoush's body was discovered at 9:00 am covered in blood in his room at the "Fanar Residence" compound that is under construction in the town of Fanar.

"In vengeance of Yabrud and in honor of Syria," was written with his blood on the wall of the room, the agency said.

The message seemed to imply that Harmoush was a supporter of the Syrian regime.

Security forces threw a tight dragnet around the area to allow the medical examiner to carry out his work, NNA said.

The fall of Yabrud, a smuggling hub for the rebels trying to overthrow Assad, was a major gain for Syrian government troops. It was also the Syrian opposition's last stronghold in the vital border area. The campaign consolidated the government's hold on the capital Damascus and the central Syrian city of Homs.

The five men were referred to the relevant authorities for further investigations, the agency added.

Blast Wounds 4 Israeli Troops in Golan, Netanyahu Vows 'Forceful' Response
[An Nahar] A bomb along the Syria-Israel frontier in the occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday maimed four Israeli soldiers, the Israeli army said, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel would act "forcefully."

The army said in a statement that "an bomb exploded against IDF (Israeli military) soldiers patrolling the Israeli-Syrian border," adding that several soldiers were maimed in the attack.

In remarks to Agence La Belle France Presse, security sources confirmed the bombing, saying the kaboom damaged an army jeep as it drove near the ceasefire line with Syria, outside the Druze town of Majdal Shams.

The Israeli media had earlier said the maimed soldiers sustained light to moderate injuries.

"The blast that hit the Israeli army jeep was apparently caused by a roadside kaboom planted near the border fence in Majdal Shams. Israeli forces responded to the blast with artillery fire and the army said it hit several targets," the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

Israel said it fired shells at Syrian army posts and sent strong-worded warnings to the Syrian government through U.N. forces in the wake of the blast.

Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, analysts pointed to similarities with an kaboom last week targeting troops along the Lebanese border, which was blamed on Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
, and a similar attempt in the Golan on March 5.

An Israeli security source said Tuesday's incident targeted a patrol driving along the ceasefire line near the Druze town of Majdal Shams.

"The soldiers were in a jeep near the fence and they saw something suspicious, so they got out and that's when the device went off," the source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The Israeli army confirmed four soldiers had been maimed by an bomb, prompting troops to open fire on Syrian military positions.

"We view the Syrian army as responsible for this incident... this indicates our response to the attack," military front man Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner told news hounds, saying it was the most serious incident on the Golan since the outbreak of the Syrian uprising in March 2011.

He was unable to confirm whether or not Hizbullah had been involved in the blast, which he said struck "adjacent to the fence, east of Majdal Shams, in the area under Israeli illusory sovereignty."

Meanwhile,
...back at the laboratory the smoke and fumes had dispersed, to reveal an ominous sight...
Netanyahu said Israel will act "forcefully" to defend itself.

"We will act forcefully to preserve Israel's security," he said in remarks broadcast on army radio, saying there were an increasing number of jihadists and Lebanese Hizbullah fighters on the Syrian side of the strategic plateau.

Roads Blocked across Lebanon 'in Solidarity' with Arsal
[An Nahar] Demonstrators blocked several key roads throughout the country on Tuesday to protest the continued closure of the only route leading from and to the border town of Arsal by residents of neighboring al-Labweh.

In the Bekaa, "a number of individuals blocked the al-Masnaa road in solidarity with Arsal," al-Jadeed television reported.

For its part, the National News Agency said "several young men blocked the international highway in both directions in Saadnayel in solidarity with Arsal's residents."

And in Taalbaya, protesters blocked the Chtaura-Baalbek highway with burning tires and rocks, according to LBCI TV.

NNA said protesters also blocked the Qob Elias-Aammiq road in al-Bohsas and the Jdita-Chtaura road.

In Beirut, demonstrators closed the Sports City, Qasqas and Corniche al-Mazraa roads.

TV said "a man was killed in Beirut's Tariq al-Jedideh as security forces dispersed a protest that was held in solidarity with Arsal."

LBCI television said "the army's Military Police launched a probe into the killing of a man from the Shawwa family and the wounding of another during the dispersion of young men who had blocked the Qasqas road."

The Sports City road was later reopened in both directions, according to MTV.

The vital highway between Beirut and the South was also briefly blocked at the al-Saadiyat intersection. Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said army troops had gun sex to disperse the protesters.

Protesters also blocked several roads in the southern city of Sidon to express their solidarity with Arsal.

Meanwhile in the North, demonstrators blocked roads in Wadi Khaled, Tripoli

The National News Agency said "spontaneous demonstrations" were staged in Wadi Khaled in solidarity with the Bekaa town.

Later on Tuesday, Future TV quoted Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq as saying that "the Arsal-al-Labweh road will be reopened tomorrow (Wednesday) morning" and that "the army and the security forces will enter Arsal."

Later on Tuesday, the Army Command issued a statement saying "starting this evening until tomorrow (Wednesday), army units will boost their deployment in the northern Bekaa border areas, especially in and around the Arsal and al-Labweh areas."

The army "will start reopening all roads between these two towns to secure the passage of citizens and preserve security and stability in the region."

On Saturday, al-Labweh residents had blocked the road leading to and from Arsal in the wake of a rocket attack on their town that left a young man dead. They said that the rockets were fired by gunnies operating in Arsal's outskirts.

The road was reopened on Sunday afternoon at the request of the family of the slain young man before it was blocked again late Sunday in the wake of a deadly suicide car blast that rocked the nearby town of al-Nabi Othman.

Arsal's deputy mayor Ahmed Fliti said Tuesday that Hizbullah

gunnies and al-Labweh residents have tightened their chokehold on Arsal.

The standoff around the eastern town is the latest in a growing spillover of the Syrian conflict into Leb.

Fliti said gunnies set up roadblocks and closed off the road connecting the town to the rest of Leb, opening fire on cars from Arsal that tried to approach the roadblock.

He said concerns are rising that aid won't be able to reach thousands of Syrian refugees sheltered in Arsal.

's troops and Hizbullah fighters on Sunday. Its rebel defenders started pouring into Arsal, which is surrounded by villages that are sympathetic to Hizbullah.

Lebanese aid organizations distributed a three-day emergency food supply to the neediest refugees in Arsal on Monday, a U.N. official said, but stressed that tens of thousands more had to rely on dwindling stocks within the town.

"Assistance will definitely be hindered without the reopening of the road. What is available in Arsal won't be enough," the official said.

Arsal is a town of 40,000 Lebanese and 52,000 Syrian refugees for whom the road is a vital lifeline.
