[Tolo News] At least two non-combatants were killed and nine others, including women and kiddies, were maimed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in southern Ghazni province on Tuesday night, local officials said.

The victims have been taken to the nearby hospital for emergency care

Libya Officer Killed, Family Wounded when Car Explodes
[An Nahar] A Libyan air force officer was killed Wednesday, and his wife and daughter seriously injured, when a bomb placed under his car went kaboom! in the eastern city of Benghazi, officials said.

In a separate incident, a jihadist leader was killed in the eastern town of Derna, which has been a stronghold of radical Islamist groups since the 2011 uprising that ended Muammar Qadaffy
...Custodian of Wheelus AFB for 42 long years until he was ejected from the gene pool by his indignant citizens...
's four-decade rule.

Benghazi was the cradle of the revolution that ousted Qadaffy, and has since been plagued by violence that has killed dozens of members of the security forces, judges and foreigners.

And Wednesday was the fourth day of a general strike to denounce the lack of security, as well as to call for the suspension of parliament and early elections.

Abdelhamid Tahar al-Imam, whose rank was not given, "was mortally maimed by the kaboom," a source at the Benghazi Medical Center said.

"His wife and daughter, who were accompanying him, were gravely maimed and are in intensive care," he added.

A security source said the bomb was underneath the car, but did not say if it detonated when Iman started the engine or as he was driving.

The kaboom occurred in the center of the city, and angry residents blocked streets and set tires on fire in protest.

The jihadist leader, identified as Ali Ben Tahar, was bumped off by unknown assailants while driving in his car with his brother, who fled, according to the Al-Wasat website, which published a death certificate.

Other media outlets also reported the death, and purported pictures of Ben Tahar's perforated carcass appeared on social media.

Al-Wasat said that, on Friday, Ben Tahar took part in a heavily armed parade through Derna by a hardline Islamist group.

The group, calling itself the "Majlis Shura of Islamist Youth in Derna," said on Facebook that it intended to take over responsibility for security in the town and impose Islamic sharia law there.

Libya's weak central government has struggled to impose order over the plethora of rebel brigades that emerged during the 2011 uprising, including jihadist groups, who remain heavily armed and are often a law unto themselves.

Seizure of arms and ammunition near the southern border
[Ennahar] The Algerian army has discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition near the border with Mali, announced Wednesday the Algerian Ministry of Defence.

These weapons were discovered Tuesday during a research operation conducted in the framework of the fight against smuggling in the region of Bordj Badji Mokhtar, extreme south of Algeria, the ministry said in a statement.

It is "five automatic Kalashnikov rifles, three machine guns (FM), a heavy machine gun and 1,005 cartridges of different calibres," the source added.

Since the beginning of the French intervention in Mali, in January 2013, Algiers has closed some 1,400 km border with Mali, in particular to avoid that Islamist groups find refuge on its territory.

Five Soldiers, Scores of Terrorists Killed in Boko Haram Ambush
[ALLAFRICA] Following continued air and land strikes on Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Death Eaters in the hills and forests of the North-East, an officer of the Nigerian Army and four soldiers have been killed in an ambush by the terrorists, while scores of the sect members were killed in the shootout that ensued.

The death of the soldiers came just as a distress call from indigenes indicating a planned attack, saved some communities around the Lake Chad Basin from being over run by the terrorists.

A statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, said: "A timely distress call has saved communities besieged by the Death Eaters in search of food around the Lake Chad area.

"The terrorists, who were said to be heavily armed, scampered for safety on sensing the approach of troops. The troops of the Multi National Joint Task Force on patrol of the area have so far recovered some arms and ammunition left behind by fleeing terrorists.

"Cordon and search of the area is continuing with a view to apprehending any of the Death Eaters that could be lurking around.

"Meanwhile,
...back at the argument, Livia grabbed for Jane's hair to make her point. Jane elbowed her in the face in rebuttal...
the assault on terrorists' enclaves in Sambisa forests and surrounding locations is continuing. Operational activities around Wala, Gwoza, Pulka and environs have been intensified.

"Encounters resulting from air and land strikes and an ambush of troops on patrols in the area have resulted in the death of scores of Death Eaters and loss of five soldiers, including an officer."

Series of deadly car bombs hits Iraqi capital
[Al Jazeera] Car bombs have hit several mostly Shia neighbourhoods of the Iraqi capital and other areas across the country, killing at least 18 people and wounding dozens, officials said.

Wednesday's attacks are the latest bout of violence ahead of the country's first parliament elections since the 2011 US troop withdrawal.

The kabooms also coincided with the anniversary of the 2003 fall of Storied Baghdad in the hands of US troops.

Earlier in the day, a boom-mobile in Storied Baghdad's central Nidhal Street killed four people and maimed 11, while three people died and nine were maimed in a boom-mobileing in the northern Kadhimiyah district, the AP news agency reported.

Car bombs also went kaboom! in the areas of Shaab, Shammaiya, Karrada and Maamil, killing a total of seven people and wounding 30, police officials added.

Later on Wednesday, three more civilians died and eight were maimed when another boom-mobile struck Storied Baghdad's central upscale commercial area of Jadiriyah.

In the Saba al-Bur area north of Storied Baghdad, two mortar rounds killed at least one person and maimed at least five.

Medical officials confirmed the causality figures.

Violence has surged in Iraq since last year, with the country weathering its deadliest bout of violence since it pulled back from the brink of civil war in 2008.

UN figures showed that last year, Iraq saw the highest corpse count in attacks, with 8,868 people killed.

Al-Jadeed television said he was undergoing "a critical surgery for his head wounds."

8 'Dangerous' Syrian Fugitives Detained in Arsal
[An Nahar] The army incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
on Wednesday evening "one of the most dangerous runaways," along with seven others, in the northeastern town of Arsal.

"The army detained eight Syrian nationals in Arsal, including one of the most dangerous and infamous runaways," LBCI television reported.

OTV said the "dangerous" runaway's name is Mohammed Qassem.

But later, al-Jadeed television noted that all detainees were "very dangerous."

"The army also confiscated a Renault Rapid car and weapons in the operation," al-Jadeed revealed, while LBCI added that computers and important files were also seized.

On March 27, runaway Sami Ahmed al-Atrash died in hospital after he was critically maimed in an exchange of gunfire with an army patrol that raided his house also in Arsal.

The arrests come as security forces are implementing a security plan that was adopted by the cabinet to restore security and stability in the northern city of Tripoli

and the Bekaa.

The plan has resulted so far in the arrest of over 40 runaways.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq vowed last week to extend the implementation of the security plan to include the northern Bekaa region and Beirut.

Army Clashes with Bab al-Tabbaneh Gunmen, Raids Arms Depot in Tripoli
[An Nahar] The army clashed with a number of gunnies on Wednesday evening as it carried out raids in the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh, after arresting three people and raiding an arms and explosives depot during the day.

"Clashes erupted between the army and gunnies in Bab al-Tabbaneh amid raids in Khan al-Askar," OTV reported.

Several other TV networks said gunfire was heard in the area as al-Jadeed said "fighting broke out between the army and gunnies in Syria Street and behind al-Rashwani Mosque in Tripoli's Bab al-Tabbaneh."

Earlier on Wednesday, the army announced the arrest of a number of suspects in Tripoli linked to the various security incidents that have taken place in the northern city.

It said in a statement that it raided a weapons storehouse in the city, arresting its owner S.Z.

Army units confiscated various weapons, ammunition, and rockets at the storehouse, as well as material used to manufacture explosives as part of the ongoing security plan being implemented in the city.

In addition, the army had locked away
Please don't kill me!
a suspect, R.A., in the al-Baraniyeh area in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood in the northern city.

He is held on charges of opening fire at an army patrol.

Troops also arrested A.A. and A.M. in Tripoli's al-Qobbeh neighborhood on charges of carrying out sectarian attacks, said the Army communique.

They also seized a number of ammunition at A.M.'s residence.

The army kicked off its security plan in Tripoli last week.

It is aimed at putting an end to the rounds of festivities between the rival impoverished neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Tensions between the two districts go back decades but have been exacerbated by the war in Syria, where Alawite Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Terror of Aleppo ...
faces Sunni rebels seeking to topple him.

Successive rounds of violence between the neighborhoods have killed dozens of people and brought parts of the city to a standstill.

The implementation of the security plan was faced with protests and attacks on Tuesday where angry men tossed several hand grenades in al-Baraniyeh as residents shortly blocked the roads of al-Dabagha and wheat market with burning tires.

The grenade attack and the road closure were aimed at stopping the army from carrying out raids to arrest suspects involved in dozens of festivities that the city had witnessed in the past years.

Killer of Soldiers in Akkar Shoots Himself Dead, Accomplice Arrested
[An Nahar] The killer of two Lebanese soldiers in an area in the northern district of Akkar did away with himself overnight and another accomplice was caught, the army and the state-run National News Agency said Wednesday.

The army said in a communique that Ali Hussein Taleb was found dead after he did away with himself but the military was able to arrest Bara' al-Kik after carrying out several raids in the town of Fnaideq.

Taleb is a 30-year-old soldier who deserted from the army three years ago and has long been sought by the security forces.

NNA said he shot himself when his uncle and two mayors from Fnaideq approached him to convince him to hand himself over to the authorities.

The army said in a communique on Tuesday night that a military vehicle was ambushed by gunnies riding a car in the area of al-Qamouaa.

An officer and non commissioned officer were killed while another was injured in the shooting, the communique said.

The head of the Federation of Municipalities of al-Qaiteh, Abdullah Zakaria, told Voice of Leb radio (93.3) that Taleb shot himself dead after he was chased by the armed forces until 1:30 am Wednesday.

The attack on the army patrol in al-Qamouaa took place around 9:30 pm.

Zakaria said that the attacker was drunk when he opened fire on the soldiers.

Syrian regime forces overrun Rankous
[Beirut Daily Star: Region] Syrian troops backed by Hezbollah fighters captured the last major town in Qalamoun near the border with Leb Wednesday after weeks of intense fighting, solidifying the regime's hold on the strategic region.

The town of Rankous fell early Wednesday, depriving the rebels their last major base in the rugged area, Lebanese sources and the Syrian government said.

"Units of the Syrian army have now accomplished their operation in the Rankous area and restored security and stability after eliminating a large number of terrorists," Syrian state TV said.

Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
's forces backed by Hezbollah fighters have been on the offensive in the Qalamoun region since November, when they captured most of the border area with Leb. The six-month battle forced tens of thousands of Syrians to flee to safety in Leb.

The capture of Rankous and other towns and villages has cut a major rebel supply route for weapons and fighters into the country from eastern Leb.

Syrian TV aired live footage from inside Rankous Wednesday saying that the operation to capture the town lasted 18 hours.

Much of the homes appeared intact in the town's center overlooked by a mosque with a green dome on top of a hill over the area.

"Rankous returns to the nation and is under the control of the Syrian Arab Army," a TV announcer said.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group reported that troops and Hezbollah fighters were in full control of the town.

The anti-Assad Qalamoun Media Center reported that 10 Hezbollah fighters were killed in the battle for Rankous. The group also said fighting was ongoing in a nearby area known as Rankous Farms.

Last month, the regime dealt a major blow to the opposition by seizing its last key bastion in the region, the town of Yabroud.

The rebels still control a few smaller villages in Qalamoun, but have seen their supply lines across the border with Leb largely severed.

Several hours after the overrunning of Rankous two boom-mobiles went kaboom! in a government-held district of Homs, killing at least 25 people and wounding more than 100.

The blasts hit a commercial street inhabited mostly by members of Assad's Alawite sect in the central city, where government forces have been imposing a heavy siege on rebel-controlled districts.

SANA said one car blew up near a sweets shop in a busy street and about half an hour later another car went kaboom! about 100 meters away "in order to inflict the biggest numbers of casualties among citizens."

SANA reported that the maimed included its photographer in Homs, Syria's third-largest city, adding that the blasts went off in the Karm al-Loz neighborhood.

The agency said the kaboom that struck a busy street also maimed 107 people. It said the dead and maimed in the kabooms included women and kiddies.

Syrian TV showed several shops and cars on fire. Videos posted online by activists showed destroyed shopfronts and people panicking and running in all directions as rescuers struggled to extinguish a fire.

"As ambulances and fire engines were working in the first site, the second blast went off, increasing the number of casualties," a witness in the city told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named. The man, who asked that his name not be given for fear of reprisals, said he counted eight bodies of people killed in the second blast.

The Observatory said the blasts killed 21 people including children. It added that the number "is expected to rise" because some of the maimed are at death's doors.

The Observatory said the dead might have included some pro-government gunnies.

Homs, a city of about 1 million, has shown great sympathy for the opposition since the early days of the uprising. The city was once known as "the capital of the Syrian revolution" before government forces captured large parts of once rebel-held neighborhoods such as Bab Amr and Khaldieh.

Three Fugitives Held, Weapons and Drugs Seized in Hermel
[AnNahar] The army jugged
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
on Monday three runaways in the eastern Bekaa town of Hermel, and seized hashish and weapons in their possession.

"We have detained Zakaria Hussein Nassereddine, Mohammed Jihad Shamas and Abbas Abdullah Dandash who are wanted on several arrest warrants," the military institution said in a communique.

"The arrested men fired gunshots at an army patrol and an Internal Security Forces headquarters in Hermel," the statement clarified.

The detainees had many assault weapons, ammunition, and large quantities of hashish in their possession, according to the communique.

"The three men and the seized weapons and drugs were referred to the competent authority."

Monday's arrest comes after army troops and security forces kicked off last week implementing a security plan in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and the Bekaa.

The plan has resulted so far in the arrest of over 35 runaways, and in seizing many stolen vehicles and illegally possessed weapons.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq assured that the plan "will not be withdrawn," and that it will extend to include regions in the northern Bekaa and Beirut.
