One Police Killed, 4 Injured in Herat Blasts
[Tolo News] An Afghan policeman was killed and four others were maimed in twin blasts in western Herat

province on Friday night, local officials said.

The first blast took place at about 8 a.m. near a mosque in Islam Qala of Herat close to the Afghanistan and Iran border. Police forces responded to the first attack when the second bomb detonated killing one policeman and injuring four others, said Safiwullah, border police chief in Islam Qala.

The victims have been taken to a hospital for treatments.

Preliminary reports suggest it was a suicide kaboom followed by gunfire.

No group including the Taliban has grabbed credit for the blasts.

Sudan arrests opposition leader al-Mahdi, could face death penalty
[AF.REUTERS] Sudanese opposition leader Sadiq al-Mahdi was tossed in the clink
You have the right to remain silent...
on Saturday on charges that could lead to the death penalty, a government official said, a move that could hurt efforts to ease political tensions before elections due next year.

Al-Mahdi, a former prime minister in Sudan's last elected civilian government, is the head of the Umma Party, the most prominent party opposing President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who ousted him in 1989.

The public prosecutor had in the past days already opened an investigation into accusations that he insulted state security forces over a surge in violence in the troubled Darfur region.

"I spoke to my grandfather's lawyer and he said charges of halting the constitutional system and inciting hatred against the state were added and their penalties range from life in prison to death," al-Mahdi's granddaughter Mariam told Rooters.

A government official, who declined to be named, confirmed al-Mahdi's arrest and the possible punishment he could face and said the investigations into him would start on Sunday.

Mali 'at war' after Tuareg separatists abduct 30 civil servants
[EURONEWS] Mali's prime minister said his country was at war with Tuareg separatists after the rebels attacked a northern town he was visiting, killing eight soldiers and abducting around 30 civil servants.

Some shooting had already broken out before Prime Minister Moussa Mara's arrival in Kidal early on Saturday and he was forced to take shelter in an army base as rebel fighters attacked and seized the regional governor's office.

Clashes continued throughout the day with sporadic shooting eventually easing during the night.

"In light of this declaration of war, the Republic of Mali is henceforth at war," Mara told a Rooters news hound inside the base overnight.

The prime minister was visiting Kidal for the first time since his appointment last month to revive long-delayed talks with northern gangs.

Mali, a former French colony, was thrown into turmoil in 2012 when al Qaeda-linked Islamists took advantage of a Tuareg-led rebellion and seized control of the country's north.

A French-led military operation, known as Serval, drove back the Islamists last year but now the Mali government's focus has turned back to the Tuareg rebels.

A front man for the MNLA rebel group claimed control of the town of Kidal on Sunday. During the day Mara moved on from Kidal to another northern town, Gao.

The festivities, potentially the worst pitting the government against Tuareg rebels since the French intervention, now threaten to sink efforts to find a peaceful solution to the long cycle of rebellions in the West African nation's desert north.

The government and a grouping of gangs, which broke with the Islamists ahead of the French offensive, signed an agreement last year promising to hold talks over autonomy.

Cairo Bomb Wounds At Least Three At Pro-Sisi Event
[Ynet] A bomb in Cairo maimed at least three people at an election event in support of Egyptian presidential frontrunner and former army chief Abdel Fatteh al-Sisi, state-run newspaper Al-Ahram and security sources said on Saturday.

A man threw the homemade device in the direction of Sisi supporters, the sources said, adding that at least one of those injured was a policeman. Sisi, who was not present, is expected to win the presidential election on May 26-27.

Belmokhtar loses another top deputy
[MAGHAREBIA] A top figure of al-Qaeda breakaway group "Mourabitounes" died last week following a clash with French forces in northern Mali.

Abu Bakr Al-Nasr was the logistics chief and weapons procurer for runaway Algerian terrorist Mokhtar Belmokhtar (aka Laaouar), Le Monde cited a French government official as saying on Saturday (May 10th).

According to El Khabar, Egyptian national al-Nasr was active in the transfer of heavy weapons to Belmokhtar's fighters in the desert region near the southern Algerian border.

"He did not belong to any of the countries of the Sahel," Mauritanian journalist Boulkheir Ould Bilal Oumar noted.

"Being Egyptian made him unknown and that's what made Laaouar exploit that and rely on him for the transfer of weapons through smuggling," he added.

His death is the second significant blow to Belmokhtar's leadership cadre in six months.

Hacene Ould Khalil (aka Jouleibib), killed last November by French forces in northern Mali, was the deputy commander of Belmoktar's former "Signed in Blood" battalion. The group was behind last year's deadly siege at the In Amenas gas complex in Algeria and the twin suicide boom-mobileings in Niger.

"When gangs lose their leaders, they are on their way to collapse," said Abdul Rahman Mtaly, a professor at the University of Nouakchott. "The young entrants who join the organization do not have the same conviction, because their main motive is money."

Other young people see Belmokhtar as bad news for the Sahel.

According to Touareg youth activist Ameknas Ag Akal, "Laaouar and his fighters are thwarting efforts of development and stability in the region."

"I think that when they are confronted forcefully, things will return to normal," the young Toaureg tells Magharebia.

Mohammed Aali, a young Mauritanian student of Islamic Sharia, denounced Belmokhtar on religious grounds.

"If Laaouar and his group believe that what they are doing serves Islam, they are wrong," he said.

"It is not one of the values of Islam to kill innocents, or kidnap people who disagree with them religiously, or to take drugs and smuggle arms. True Islam intersects with other religions in the care for human life and the search for good," the student added.

Libya denounces Benghazi offensive as coup bid
[Iran Press TV] Libyan authorities have denounced an offensive launched by a retired army general against Death Eaters in the eastern city of Benghazi as a "coup" bid.

In a joint statement released on Saturday, the army, government and parliament warned that the Friday raid by the National Army led by Khalifa Haftar is considered "an action outside state legitimacy and a coup d'état."

"All those who took part in this coup bid will be prosecuted," said Nuri Abu Sahmein, the head of the interim parliament, reading from the statement on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
.

The statement also accused Haftar of using the surge in violence in Benghazi to "pursue personal gains or turn against the state legitimacy."

"We call on Benghazi residents, the city of the revolution, to be steadfast and be united ... to get rid of those leading the coup and to protect the city," Abu Sahmein said.

The Libyan government and parliament have also labeled the National Army forces as "outlaws."

On the same day, the army declared a no-fly zone over Benghazi following the deadly festivities.

This came after Haftar said his group would continue operations to flush out "terrorists" from Benghazi.

On Friday, Haftar's loyalists known as the National Army, used air forces against the Death Eaters holed up in the region.

Since then, at least 43 people have been killed and 150 injured in violent conflicts.

Renegade Libyan General Vows More Attacks
[THEGLOBEANDMAIL] The self-declared Libyan National Army led by a renegade general told civilians on Saturday to leave parts of Benghazi before it launched a fresh attack on Islamist myrmidons, a day after dozens were killed in the worst festivities in the city for months.

Families could be seen packing up and driving away from western districts of the port city where Islamist snuffies and LNA forces led by retired General Khalifa Haftar fought for hours on Friday.

Dressed in military uniform, Hafter - whom the speaker of parliament accused of plotting a coup - said his troops had temporarily withdrawn from Benghazi for tactical reasons.

"We'll come back with force," he told news hounds at a sports club in Abyar, a small town to the east of Benghazi.

"We've started this battle and will continue it until we have reached our goals," he said.

He said government and parliament had no legitimacy as they had failed to achieve security. "The street and the Libyan people are with us," he said, adding that his troops were spread out in several parts of eastern Libya.

In Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, parliamentary speaker and military commander-in-chief Nuri Abu Sahmain said Hafter was trying to stage a coup.

"(LNA) members who have carried out the festivities in Benghazi are out of the control of the state of Libya and they are trying to attempt a coup for their own interests," Abu Sahmain said in a televised news conference.

A Health Ministry official said the corpse count had risen to 43, with more than 100 maimed. Haftar said 60 snuffies and six of his soldiers were killed, and 250 snuffies and 37 of his men maimed.

Bombs Rock Kenya As More Brits Flee: 13 Killed Hours After Foreign Office Terror Alert
[DailyMail]
Photos, videos, and a cute little map at the link.
o At least 13 people are feared to have died in twin kabooms in Nairobi
o Reports suggest around 70 people were maimed in the blasts
o UK and US authorities recently imposed warnings on travel to Kenya
o Kenya's National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) confirmed on Twitter that the first kaboom came from a 14-seater matatu (minibus), and the second came from within Gikomba Market
o Reports suggest that one suspect has been incarcerated
Please don't kill me!
Hundreds of British tourists were evacuated from Kenya last night as the capital Nairobi was rocked by bombings.

Holidaymakers had their trips cut short after the Foreign Office warned against travelling to beach resorts along the coast.

Travel firms chartered planes to bring people home early from Nairobi, the Indian Ocean resort of Mombasa and other parts of the country.

Yesterday, as anxious travellers arrived at Kenyan airports to check in for their flights to Britannia, two bombs went off in Nairobi, leaving at least 13 dead and 70 injured.

The kabooms follow a recent spate of terror attacks by the Islamist Al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
group, including an kaboom at a bus station that killed three and the discovery of a bomb at a hotel. These prompted the Foreign Office to alter its travel advice for Kenya, warning against all but essential travel to areas within 37 miles of the Kenya-Somali border and Nairobi.

It added: 'There has been a spate of small-scale grenade, bomb and armed attacks in Nairobi, Mombasa, and North Eastern Province.'

The US, La Belle France and Australia have also issued alerts.

Most travel insurance policies are invalid in areas the Foreign Office rules are unsafe, so tour operators have cancelled Kenyan holidays.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
some tourists claimed the tour companies had overreacted to the Islamist terror threats, which are understood to include plans to bomb beach hotels and kidnap Western tourists.

More than 500 British tourists are expected to have been evacuated from the region by tomorrow night, with those expecting to visit Kenya in the next six months facing the cancellation of their holidays.

The unusual move follows intelligence warnings to the British Government of a high threat of attack in Mombasa and Nairobi by Al-Shabaab, which is based in Somalia and is linked to Al Qaeda and the Nigerian group Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
The group includes British fighters such as Samantha Lewthwaite, the so-called White Widow' of 7/7 jacket wallah Jermaine Lindsay.

Al-Shabaab was behind the attack on Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall in September, when 67 people were killed after its fighters took it over.

Some 5,000 Britons are on holiday in Kenya, with an estimated 500 in the Mombasa area subject to the warning.

CONCERNS HIGH IN KENYA OVER AL-QAEDA-LINKED GROUP AL-SHABAB

Islamic bully boy group Al-Shabaab, which means 'The Youth' in Arabic, was formed in 2006 as a radical offshoot of the Islamic justice system.
It is thought to have between 9,000 and 15,000 members and in 2012, it joined the bully boy Islamist organization al-Qaeda as a cell.
The group wants to overthrow the UN-backed government in Somalia, and is suspected of links to a string of attacks in neighbouring Kenya.
It has been pushed out of most of the main towns it once controlled, but it remains a potent threat.
As of 2013, pressure from African Union

Mission In Somalia (AMISOM) and Æthiopian forces has largely degraded Al-Shabaab's control and conflict among big shots has exacerbated fractures within the group.
Following the death of British Army soldier Drummer Lee Rigby in May 2013, it emerged one of his murderers had travelled to Kenya to train with Al-Shabaab.
Michael Adebolajo, 29, was arrested in Kenya in 2010 with five others. At the time, the head of Kenya's anti-terrorism unit said he believed Adebolajo was planning to train with Al-Shabaab, yet he was released to British authorities in Kenya and deported.
Adebolajo and accomplice Michael Adebowale, 22, were convicted in December last year of murdering Fusilier Lee Rigby outside his barracks in Woolwich.
The British Moslem converts ran him over in a car, almost decapitated him and then dragged him into the middle of the road while ordering onlookers to film them.
Adebolajo was given a whole-life term and Adebowale was incarcerated

Yemen forces kill 2 Saudi militants: Defense Ministry
[Iran Press TV] Yemeni army troops have killed two Saudi members of al-Qaeda in the south of the country, the Defense Ministry says.

The ministry said on its website on Saturday that the Yemeni soldiers killed "two Saudi terrorists, Ibrahim Hamad and Ahmed al-Harbi," in the town of Azzan, in Shabwah province.

The army forces said they captured Azzan after carrying out an operation on April 29 but sporadic festivities continued with bully boyz still holed up in houses there, witnesses said.

The focus of the army's offensive has been on the provinces of Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...

Meanwhile,

a military official was quoted by Yemeni media as saying that "Al-Qaeda members are still being hunted" and the operation "will continue until they are cleared."

On Thursday, Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi vowed to eliminate al-Qaeda bad boys.

Nine more suspects killed in 'encounters'
[DAWN] KARACHI: Some nine suspects -- four kidnappers, three bandidos and two gangsters -- were bumped off in separate shootouts with police in the city, while an industrialist kidnapped over two days back was safely recovered in the early hours of Saturday, officials said.

In a midnight raid, off the Super Highway, police spotted a hideout in Jamali Goth where an industrialist was kept by the kidnappers for a ransom of Rs1 million, followed by a joint raid by the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) of police and the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) that turned into a deadly encounter. During the shootout, four suspected kidnappers were killed, the police said.

"The industrialist was recovered safe and unhurt," said CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy. "He was kidnapped on May 14 from the Gulshan-e-Maymar area and the family received a call for his release against Rs1million ransom. We kept the kidnappers engaged through a family to trace their location and finally spotted them in Jamali Goth."

He said there could be more than four kidnappers who might have escaped during the exchange of fire.

He said three TT pistols and a gun were seized from the possession of the dear departed kidnappers, who had not been identified yet.

In Lyari, a joint raid by the police and Rangers in Singo Lane triggered firing from 'gangsters'.

SP City Shiraz Nazeer said the gunnies attacked personnel of the law-enforcement agencies when they were taking positions acting on a tip-off about the presence of the 'gangsters' in the area. The attack triggered a strong reaction from the police and Rangers, he said.

"The exchange of gunfire left two gangsters, who were later identified as Umair alias Chhotu and Asghar Ali alias Wiki, dead."

An AK-47 rifle, a 9mm pistol and two hand-grenades were seized from their possession.

Hours later, two suspected bandidos met the same fate in Baldia after they stormed into a house in Ghaziabad and held a family hostage at gunpoint, police said.

"One of the family members, however, managed to dodge the bandidos and left home to call police," said SSP West Irfan Baloch. "The police party rushed to the location and took positions and asked the bandidos to surrender as they came out."

While taking two of the family members hostage, the bandidos attempted to escape, but the police 'cleverly' challenged them and an encounter ensued during which both the bandidos were killed, said the SSP.

"One of the bandidos has been identified as Bakht Jamal while the other remained unidentified. Two TT pistols and a cycle of violence have been seized from their possession," he said.

Another bandit was killed near a shopping mall in Clifton Block 2, where he along with his accomplice was depriving families of cash and valuables, police said.

The police were informed on helpline 15 about the armed robbers, said and official at the Boat Basin cop shoppe. As the police reached the location they came under fire, he added.

In an ensuing encounter, one of the fleeing bandidos was killed while the other sped away on a motorbike.

"The dear departed was identified as Farooq Sher with the help of an identity card found in his pocket," added the official.

Terror network having TTP link busted
[DAWN] LAHORE: Police claimed on Friday to have busted a network of terrorists-cum-hit mans associated with the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) and another outfit.

It placed in durance vile
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
eight snuffies including a traffic warden and seized a huge quantity of explosives, suicide jackets, laptops and illegal weapons.

Police identified the arrested suspects as Shafique Shah of Fazal Colony, Bund Road, warden Muhammad Azam of Ravi Road, Saqib Anjum, Obaidullah, Muhammad Aftab, Qari Mushtaq, Hafiz Azeem and Qari Asif Mahmood.

Most of the arrested are said to be associated with those six members of banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
who were captured last month and were produced before the media. They were also taken into 'custody' by the Crimes Investigation Agency last month but their arrests were not made public for further investigation, Dawn learnt on Friday.

Two important members of the alleged terrorist network --Haroon Bhatti and Saeed of Kot Pindi Das, Sheikhupura -- are still absconders, police sources say and claim the recent arrests were made possible only after the arrested suspects disclosed their plans to target some senior coppers and known figures from different segments of society.

Capital City Police Officer Chauhdry Shafique told a news conference that a 'terror plot' had been averted as eight arrested suspects had planned to kill religious and important personalities, senior journalists, doctors, lawyers and senior coppers, and that they had completed surveillance of around 39 targets besides some important buildings and international companies' offices.

The suspects used to contact each other through emails and had been using several internet cafes of the city for communication. They also used to contact their accomplices in Afghanistan through the net.

The CCPO said the network had also planned to carry out a pressure-cooker blast and suicide kabooms during a national anthem ceremony in the Punjab University in winter, but cancellation of the programme failed their mission.

He said two jacket wallahs, who had to hit the ceremony, stayed at the Rehmanpura (Ichhra) residence of Qari Asif Mahmood who is a tutor at Jamia Qasmia, Rehmanpura.

He said Shafique Shah joined a banned bad boy outfit in 1992, operated along snuffies wanted in several cases and was currently playing a central role in planning terrorist activities after joining the TTP.

Similarly, warden Azam of Ravi Road, who joined a banned outfit before his selection as warden, also acted as an informer to target senior coppers and important government buildings. Azam's father was a police inspector.

The CCPO said the suspects, who brought a huge quantity of explosives and arms from Wazoo, had planned to kidnap or kill foreigners to damage the country's image and abduct members of elite class for fund raising.

A senior police investigator told Dawn that the CIA police with the help of an intelligence agency first picked warden Azam and later Qari Asif Mahmood around 50 days ago and came to know about other members of the network involved in a series of murders in the lovely provincial capital since May 2012.He said police then captured Shafique Shah and his two accomplices from Waziristan and later took others into custody, bringing the total arrests to 14.

The officer said the CIA police earlier captured sharp shooter Abdur Rauf Gujjar, who was directly involved in the liquidation of Maulana Shamsur Rehman Moawia, Allama Nasir Abbas, Advocate Shakir Ali Rizvi and others.

He said Rauf and his five accomplices were directly linked with recently arrested snuffies Shafique Shah and Qari Asif.

The officer said one Saeed, who provided weapons to Rauf to kill renowned personalities in Lahore, and Haroon, who introduced Rauf to Malik Ishaq and the TTP, were still on the run and were a potential threat to law-enforcement agencies.

Syrian Army Launches New Offensive Near Israeli Border
[Ynet] 'Anti-terrorist operation' meant to recapture strategic area in south; intense aerial bombardment and hundreds of rockets reported.

The Syrian army began a new offensive on Friday against rebels trying to topple Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

, meant to regain complete control of the Quneitra region in the south of the country.

The strategic triangle targeted by the Syrian army extends from the capital of Damascus to the Jordanian border and the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

Though the number of victims from the beginning of the operation over the weekend is unknown, intensive aerial bombardments were reported throughout the south and hundreds of rockets were launched at villages in the area.

"The army wants to take back hills seized by rebels in recent weeks, that link together Daraa and Quneitra provinces," said Syrian Observatory For Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman.

"The army's counter-offensive, against rebels and the (jihadist) Al-Nusra Front, has been extremely fierce. On Friday the army fired 100 rockets and carried out 15 air strikes. On Saturday, the air raids and shelling have been continuous, and the army also fired a surface-to-surface missile against Sahem village," said Abdel Rahman.

The Syrian government has labeled the advancement on the south as an "anti-terrorist operation."

Reports from the Saudi publication Al-Okaz quoted diplomatic sources as saying that Hezbollah operatives fighting alongside the Syrian army had already taken up strategic positions in the area. The sources said that Hezbollah sees the entire region as key in their fight to control southern Leb.

Syria militants release 45 hostages after Homs deal
[Iran Press TV] Dozens of Syrians kidnapped by Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
groups in Latakia last year have been released as part of a deal between the Syrian government and Death Eaters in the city of Homs, Press TV reports.

The recent deal between Damascus and the foreign-backed Death Eaters ended the months-long ordeal of 45 Syrian citizens who had been kidnapped by the bad boy groups during an attack in the port city of Latakia last August.

Recently, two groups of the hostages, mostly from the villages in the northeastern countryside of Latakia, were released after being held by the Death Eaters for several months.

In interviews with Press TV, the released hostages recounted their ordeal during their captivity at hands of bad boy kidnappers in Latakia.

"When we were in Salma, they killed some of the people who were with us," said Zeinab, a young girl among those freed, adding that the Death Eaters killed a boy from a nearby village as he tried to escape.
