Kenyan AF pounds Shaboobs
JILIB, Somalia -- As Somali government forces along with African Union peacekeepers are pressing ahead with military offensive against beleaguered Islamist militants, Kenyan fighter jets reportedly unleashed airstrikes on Al Shabaab hideouts near Middle Juba regional district of Jilib of southern Somalia on Wednesday afternoon, Garowe Online reports.

According to independent sources, the airstrikes are believed to have inflicted heavy losses on Al Shabaab militants.

Allied forces take control of Barawe coastal town
GAROWE -- Somali government forces aided by African Union peacekeepers drove into the major Al Shabaab hotbed of Barawe in pick-up trucks and battle tanks as militants continue to lose ground on Sunday morning, Garowe Online reports.

Lower Shabelle Governor Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Siidi told the media that military formed bases in the outskirts of the coastal town. Local reports say, security forces right away pushed ahead with door-to-door search operation.

Though Al Shabaab fled the economic-powerhouse two days ago, allied forces were not quick to move in.

Joint military campaign has been seeing string of strongholds in southern and central Somalia since March this year. Al Shabaab's unrelenting rule is dwindling, with Somali army along with African Union troops making advance on the frontline.

Jubaland, AU forces capture Al Shabaab-held area
KISMAYO, Somalia -- Jubaland forces along with African Union peacekeepers captured Bulo Gadud vicinity, 30km north of the southern port city of Kismayo without resistance according to officials, Garowe Online reports.

Security sources say, the allied troops in armored fighting vehicles and battle tanks began to thrust into Al Shabaab-held area of Bulo Gudud enroute to Jilib and Jamame-two key terrorist hotbeds-in Jubaland on Monday morning. Militants ran like Nancy boys fled in advance of the anticipated joint offensive.

Jubaland spokesman Abdinasir Serar Mah confirmed the capture of Bulo Gudud, underlining that the military campaign would target areas remaining under the control of beleaguered Al Shabaab group in the coming days.

"We are advancing towards Bu'alle, Salagle, Saakow and Jilib," said Mah.

Yoontoy and Koban also fell to the allied forces, with independent sources stating that roadside bombing hit armored vehicle shortly after Bulo Gudud seizure. No fatalities have been disclosed to the media yet.

Jubaland leader Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe) yesterday unveiled more military offensives against Al Shabaab bases.

Kenyan Defence Force (KDF) crossed the border into Somalia in late 2011 and after vehement clashes with Al Qaeda-inspired fighters liberated strategic Kismayo seaport.

Derna's rival Islamist militias fall out over Caliphate allegiance
[Libya Herald] Following Friday's declaration of allegiance to Daesh (the "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
") by Derna's Shoura Council of Islamic Youth (SCIY) and its military parade through the streets, the town's rival Islamist militia, the Abu Sleem Martyrs' Brigade has said that it is not giving it allegiance to anyone outside the country.

The two groups have engaged in an increasingly deadly rivalry in recent months and two weeks ago at least six members of the two groups were killed in festivities.

The rivalry has not stopped others being killed. It is suspected that a man reported to have been murdered in the town's Shara Al-Wadi district today was killed by krazed killers. Osama Bader Al-Mansuri, said to be a lawyer and activist, is reported to have opposed Ansar and the SCIY.

The Shoura Council is expected to announce the name of the town's "emir" (prince or governor) later this week. In the Caliphate to which the SCIY has given its allegiance, each area is supposed to be run by an emir.

Meanwhile claims by Operation Dignity to have carried out the air strikes on a SCIY base and arms depot in Derna yesterday have been challenged by an eyewitness who told the Libya Herald that the strikes had been too accurate and successful to have been done by the Libya air force. "It was precision targeting", he said, insisting that foreign air force fighters must have been involved.

His allegation that foreigners were also fighting with Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
and the SCIY has, however, been repeated by a prominent local resident who asked to remain anonymous. "There are Iraqis, Syrians and Tunisians among them," the resident told this newspaper this afternoon. He added there was growing anger in the town with both the SCIY and the Abu Sleem Martyrs' Brigade. "People don't want them anymore," he said. Public opposition to the group was the reason, he believed, why SCIY members had covered their faces in Friday's parade. They are afraid of the people of Derna," he said.

The SCIY had organised a meeting yesterday on the Caliphate in the town's historic Sahaba Mosque, he added, but there was almost no support for the idea.

Benghazi Violence: Benina clashes continue into fifth consecutive day
[Libya Herald] Nine more members of Saiqa Special Forces
...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. have died and three members of Benghazi Revolutionaries' Shoura Council (BRSC) were also reportedly killed as the identities of those slain in the last five days of fighting continue to emerge.

The Head of Saiqa Special Forces Investigations Unit, Fadel Al-Hassi, told the Libya Herald that BRSC had continued its assault on Benina from several points but that with the support of Operation Dignity's air forces the attackers had been repulsed.

He said that Arclight airstrikes had also been carried out on Buatni which has become a staging post for Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. and its allies as they attack Benina.

Hassi identified Saiqa's dead as Ahmed Juma Gweri, Hamid Mansour, Salah Hamdi, Adel Mohammed, Saad Al-Khalifi, Mohammed Omar, Issa Bubakr, Mohammed Al-Badri and Mohammed Al-Afaf.

Ahmed Abid Al-Dressi, Abdullah Al-Khabasa and Abdullah Al-Moghrabi from BRSC were also reportedly killed in the festivities although medics at Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC) could only confirm the death of one of the three, Moghrabi.

The same medical sources explained that staff at the hospital were struggling to deal with the influx of dead and injured from the fighting. They explained that many of the bodies that had been brought in had not yet been processed.

While much of the recent violence in Benghazi has centred around Benina and surrounding areas, in the early hours of the morning a security building in the Sabri area was destroyed in a kaboom. There were no human losses although the building was raised to the ground.

The latest surge in violence in Benghazi began on Thursday when BRSC carried out a double suicide kaboom on Benina. Twenty four soldiers were killed and 12 maimed in the initial blasts and subsequent fighting, according to the government.

Medical reports, however, put Thursday's toll at 29 dead and dozens maimed. These are only the casualties on the army's side. The number of BRSC's dead and maimed was not disclosed.

holy warriors killed seven people on Monday in the remote northeast of Nigeria, residents and an official said, with reports indicating the victims had their heads chopped off in a Dire Revenge™ attack.

The overnight raid targeted the town of Ngamdu in troubled Borno state, the area hardest hit in the Islamists' five-year uprising.

When locals woke they discovered "seven people had been brutally killed", said resident Musa Abor.

The gunnies "slit their (victims) throats just the way people slaughter goats", he added.

Abor and a Borno state official, who asked that his name be withheld, said the bodies had been decapitated, in the latest act of gruesome violence blamed on the Islamists who have killed more than 10,000 people since 2009.

in neighbouring Nigeria, security officials said.

A police officer told AFP that Boko Haram bandidos snuffies fired the rocket from the Nigerian town of Banki which hit the town of Amchide in the far north of Cameroon.

"The rocket landed in Amchide, killing eight civilians and injuring many more. We fear that the number of dead will rise," said the policeman, who asked not to be named.

A Cameroonian security agent said the rocket landed in a road where many people were shopping.

Boko Haram took control of Banki several weeks ago and the bandidos snuffies have tried to make incursions across the border into Amchide.

The residents of Amchide have set up self-defence groups to fight off the Islamists.

As Pakistan violates ceasefire, India vows 'effective retaliation'
[INDIANEXPRESS] In the face of sustained firing from across the International Border and Line of Control, the government and the BSF took a hard line on Monday -- promising to "retaliate effectively" and, in a departure from past practice, said they would neither speak to Pakistain nor seek a flag meeting to lower tensions.

Mortar and small arms fire that began overnight on Sunday, continued through Monday -- the targets moving from the Arnia sector to R S Pura and Kanachak along the IB, and subsequently to the entire Bhimber Gali area, and the Krishna Ghati and Kerni sectors along the LoC in Poonch district, sources said.

Shelling was on until last reports came in late on Monday night, with the BSF and Army "strongly retaliating".

killed at least 25 jihadists overnight, medical sources and witnesses said on Monday.

Residents said that warplanes struck IS targets in Zummar, a town about 70 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of Mosul, near Badush, a former prison west of Mosul and near a village called Aski Mosul.

Medical sources said the bodies of 25 fighters were brought to the morgue in Mosul, which the jihadist organization has used as its main center early June.

It was not immediately clear whether the warplanes were Iraqi or from the U.S.-led international coalition, which carries out daily raids against IS targets in Iraq and Syria.

Zummar was one of the objectives of a ground operation launched by Kurdish troops a week ago.

US Uses Helicopters For First Time To Hit Islamic State

rebels in Iraq for the first time, exposing US troops to greater risk from ground fire as they help Iraqi forces battle the Islamist group that has overrun parts of the country.

US troops flew helicopters against Islamic State fighters on Sunday and again on Monday as they struck at mortar teams and other units near Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
said a front man for Central Command, which is responsible for US forces in the Middle East.

"This was the first time rotary wing aircraft were used in coordination with and in support of ISF (Iraqi Security Force) operations," Army Major Curtis Kellogg said in an email. "The Iraqi government asked for support with this capability near Fallujah to push back (Islamic State)."

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, said the helicopters that were used were Apache attack helicopters.

Christopher Harmer, a former Navy aviator who is now an analyst at the Institute for the Study of War think tank, said this was a significant escalation in the level of risk being taken by US troops assisting the Iraqi military.

"Fixed-wing aircraft flying at 30,000 feet (9,000 meters) are completely immune from the type of weapons that Islamic State fighters have, but a helicopter is not," Harmer said.

"When you're flying a helicopter 150 feet (50 meters) above the ground, that helicopter can be shot with a rocket-propelled grenade or a heavy machine gun ... so yes it is much more dangerous," he added.

Army Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon front man, said the decision to use helicopters was taken because of the nature of the targets, but he did not offer details on who made the decision.

Harmer said helicopters would be much more effective at supporting Iraqi ground troops directly engaged in combat with Islamic State fighters because they fly lower and more slowly and are more capable of identifying individual targets.

"If you've got Iraqi army fighting against Islamic State fighters, it's much better to have helicopters supporting the Iraqi army than fixed-wing aircraft," he said.

Warren said the military considered the risk of flying helicopters before deploying them. The military conducts "risk assessments with every single operation we execute and in this case the decision was made that that platform was the appropriate platform for the target set," he said.

Central Command said in a release on Sunday that US forces conducted four strikes northeast of Fallujah, hitting two mortar teams, a large ISIS unit and two small ISIS units. It said in a release on Monday that two strikes northeast of Fallujah destroyed two mortar placements and an Islamic State bunker.

It was not clear from the Central Command statement whether all or only some of these strikes were conducted from US helicopters.

Several milblogs are saying special ops is already taking part in combat.

Also there are several ways to fudge the numbers:
1) CIA Special Activities Division
2) Military personnel "sheep dipped" (temporarily assigned to the CIA)
3) Ex-military as "civilian contractors"
4) Active military in civilian clothes
5) Just lie (what Obama does best)

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria Troops Seize Strategic Area Outside Damascus
[AnNahar] Syrian government forces on Monday seized control of a strategic area outside Damascus used by rebels to fire mortar shells at the capital, state media and a monitor said.

State television broadcast live images from Dakhaniyeh, southeast of Damascus, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that "rebels have withdrawn".

The capture comes nearly a month after government forces launched an offensive to regain control of the area, from which rebels have launched mortar shells against the Old City of Damascus and the pro-regime Jaramana district outside the capital.

The army "restored security and stability to Dakhaniyeh and its surroundings," state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
said, adding that "a large number of terrorists" were killed.

A security source said the capture would allow government troops to "tighten the noose on terrorist groups in Ain Tarma and Jobar," two areas around the capital under rebel control.

Both Ain Tarma and Dakhaniyeh are in the Eastern Ghouta area, which is a stronghold of rebels in Damascus province.

"The operation in Ghouta will continue until it is completely cleared of any terrorist presence," the security source said.

The Observatory said four regime soldiers had been killed entering Dakhaniyeh by a bomb planted by rebels inside the area.

The capture follows a string of victories for regime forces in the area around Damascus, where they have retaken several rebel strongholds in recent months.

At Least 30 Kurdish Fighters Killed In Two Suicide Bombs In Syria's Hasakah
[Ynet] At least 30 people were killed in two suicide kabooms on two checkpoints run by Kurdish fighters in Syria's northeastern city of Hasakah on Monday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"The attacks targeted checkpoints run by Kurdish fighters on the western entrance of the city, they occurred within minutes from each other," Rami Abdelrahman from the Observatory said.

10 Hezbies whacked in fight with Al-Nusra
10 Hezbollah fighters have been killed in clashes with Jabhat al-Nusra militants in eastern Lebanon, RIA Novosti reported Monday referring to a Hezbollah source.
Green-on-green? Most excellent! Double-plus good!
"10 Hezbollah fighters died while countering the yesterday attack on a checkpoint, some people were seriously wounded. A few dozen terrorists [from the Jabhat al-Nusra group] were eliminated, those who survived dropped their weapons and ammunition and fled from the battlefield," the source said.

On Sunday, Hezbollah fighters reportedly countered an attack launched by Islamic State (IS) militants in Lebanon's mountainous region of Brital, on the Syrian-Lebanese border.

Hezbollah has been fighting against Jabhat al-Nusra, also known as the al-Nusra Front, which is an affiliate of al-Qaeda. Hezbollah fighters have also been taking part in the Syrian government's operations against the armed opposition and the IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
An Nahar has more detail on the engagement here.

Kobane: Civilians flee IS street-to-street fighting
[BBC] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) bully boyz have entered the key Syria-Turkey border town of Kobane and are engaged in street-to-street fighting with Syrian Kurd defenders.

IS fighters entered eastern districts, raising their black flag on buildings and high ground.

Hundreds of civilians are reported to be fleeing to the Turkish border.

Taking Kobane, besieged for three weeks, would give IS control of a long stretch of the Syrian-Turkish border.

More than 160,000 Syrians, mainly Kurds, have fled the town.

Earlier a local official in Kobane, Idriss Nassan, told the BBC that the town would "certainly fall soon".

He confirmed IS was now in control of Mistenur, the strategic hill above the town and that there was heavy shelling. Kobane is now besieged on three sides.

'Limited weapons'
Asya Abdullah, a senior Kurdish politician and co-leader of the Democratic Union Party, is in Kobane and told the BBC's Newshour programme that festivities were taking place in three neighbourhoods.

She said: "There is fighting on Kobane's streets now. There are still thousands of civilians in the city and IS is using heavy weapons. If they are not stopped now, there will be a big massacre.

UNPRECEDENTED: First Kurdish Female Suicide Bomber Strikes ISIS
In what is being reported as the first recorded instance of suicide bomber tactics being used against the terrorist Islamic State group, a female commander in the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) blew herself up to attack an Islamic State fort close to Kobane, a highly-disputed Syrian Kurdish border town.

According to Kurdish outlet Rudaw, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the suicide attack occurred amidst a battle for the town of Kobane, pivotal to controlling the Syrian-Turkish border, on Sunday. "She clashed with enemy fighters, fired grenades and then detonated herself with a grenade," reports Rudaw.

The NGO, notes the Times of Israel, has reported that this is the first such instance of a female suicide bomber of Kurdish origin attacking the jihadist group. The newspaper notes that such an attack highlights the "Kurdish defenders’ determination to keep the jihadists at bay."

The UK Telegraph has identified the woman as Arin Mirkan, a commander in the YPG. Another outlet, the Inquisitr, suggests that Mirkan detonated herself after being cornered, and chose to kill herself and her would-be captors rather than surrender. This report is not confirmed, however. In addition to Mirkan, estimates suggest about 33 Islamic State terrorists and 23 Kurdish soldiers died during extended attacks on Sunday.

Currently, there is no guarantee that Kurdish forces will be able to keep the Islamic State from taking the city, as an Islamic State flag has been seen flying over Kobane this morning, and clashes continue in the area. While the BBC reports that the Turkish government has also vowed to keep Kobane from falling, there is little evidence that the Islamic State forces are being held back. According to the area's Kurdish leader, Anwar Salim, Turkey has yet to provide military or humanitarian support.

Evidence of heavy fighting in the area continues to surface, all while the support Kurds are expecting from the Turkish government remains missing in action. Al Jazeera reports that YPG representatives have stated that fighting raged overnight in the outskirts of the city, and that US and coalition airstrikes were helping, but insufficient to hold back the terrorist group indefinitely.

Should ISIS manage to capture Kobane, they would decisively link their controlled territories in Turkey and Syria, effectively dissolving an already barely-there border. Such an advance would allow Islamic State jihadists to travel to and from Turkey with even greater ease, and recruits to travel from Western nations to Turkey and insert themselves into the theater of war. Rudaw reports that the Islamic State's jihadists have moved to within one kilometer of the city.

Sounds a little more plausible than the suicide bomber headline given the Kurds being Kurds and not your typical jihadis.

#5  If she saved the last grenade for herself, not willing to be taken prisoner by the devils.

If she saved the last grenade for herself and had an opportunity to take a few devils out with her, suicide bomber/soldier of honor/excellent commander who set an example for those under her command.

#6  Another vote for the not a suicide bomber. For one you don't really suicide bomb in the middle of combat, its a tactic to take crowds by surprise (I know a few Vietnamese used humans as guidance systems for satchel charges but that was a bit different). I mean really, in combat you could throw the grenade and get a better effect.

I also think it was a save the last grenade rather than be capture instance.

#3  But high British military officials believe a “kill or capture’’ mission now would end in disaster because the fanatics’ forces are too strong.

Maybe ISIS is too strong for the "capture order" given the military situation. The kill order could be given. I suspect, the Brits and Americans are trying to keep the hostages alive; otherwise they could be (or should be) killing large numbers of ISIS from the air. There is not much cover in this area to prevent this from happening. It doesn't seem like we have made daily life miserable for ISIS at this point. Pinprick operations seem to be the modus operandi. Are there any non-ISIS civilians left in Raqqa at this point?
