Ethiopians Guilty Over Muslim Face Covering (and Terror Plots)
[Ynet] A state-affiliated media group in Æthiopia says a court has found 13 people accused of establishing a secret terrorist network guilty over the issue of Moslem face coverings.

The broadcaster, Fana, quoted the state prosecutor on Monday as saying the suspects used religion to conceal their terrorist intents and forge a secret network.

Gunmen vandalise Tripoli's Karamanli Mosque
[Libya Herald] One of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
's most famous and beautiful mosques, the Ahmed Pasha Karamanli Mosque in the Old City, has been badly vandalised by a group of gunnies.

They forced their way into the richly decorated building yesterday and started removing marble from the floors and walls and digging up the ground with drills to a about a metre in depth.

Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
were initially accused of the destruction but have denied it. Nor is there any apparent reason why they would want to further damage the mosque. Just over two years ago, in an orgy of vandalism, they blew up and demolished shrines and mosques in and around Tripoli containing graves and dug those at other mosques and religious sites. The Karamanli Mosque, not the oldest in the old city but the largest and most beautiful, was not spared. All the tombs around the 18th-century building were ransacked and emptied, including that of Ahmed Pasha Karamanli, the founder of the Karamanli dynasty.

There are suggestions that ordinary thieves were responsible, looking for "buried treasure". In the current situation in Tripoli and elsewhere, criminals know they can get away with anything, even attacking mosques, especially if they claim to be revolutionaries and intent on "correcting" Islam in Libya.

Given the attack, there are now fears for the Darghut Mosque, said to contain a hair of the Prophet Mohammed, and of the nearby Othman Pasha madrassa, home to a Sufi community.

#2  suggestions that ordinary thieves were responsible, looking for "buried treasure".

Given the description of the damage that seems a reasonable suggestion. I would suggest that perhaps the buried treasures being sought are Stingers, RPGs etc. Logical place to look for them.

#4  Sounds as if they were digging to place explosives. I lived in Tripoli just down the street from that Mosque. Most of the servants and two of my hosts worshipped there.

Six Libyans arrested as 'terrorists' in Tunisia
[Libya Herald] Six Libyans tossed in the slammer
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
yesterday in Ben Guerdane initially accused being smugglers are now being accused of being terrorists, the Libya Herald has been informed.

According to a Tunisian security source, the six had cash in various currencies worth 1.3 million Tunisian dinars ($720,000) on then at the time of their arrest and were initially thought to be smugglers. The Tunisian media reported them as such.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
their interrogation had revealed them to be "terrorists" claimed the source . He said the Tunisian authorities now believed they had gone to Tunisia to bring back recruits Libya. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
it has not been divulged which group they supposedly belong to.

According to the Tunisian new agency TAP, the six are "dangerous smugglers" who have been taking young bully boy Salfists to Libya for training for operations either in Libya or Syria.

It said that not only was the money discovered with them, but so too were guns and bullets, ten vehicles, three laptop computers, portable phones and 631 bottle of alcohol -- the later presumably for sale in Libya.

More Libyans killed in Syria fighting for IS
[Libya Herald] Three Libyans have been killed in Syria in recent days, according to Daesh, also known as the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
. The most recent death was of an unnamed Libyan who Daesh reported had died fighting Kurds north of Aleppo.

Last week the organization announced the death of Abu Sahaib and Abu Ouf, though no further details were given.

There are no clear figures for the number of Libyans who have gone to Syria and Iraq to join up with IS. Estimates range from a few hundred to one or two thousand. Most would-be IS members find their way to the organization via Turkey. Many are young people who quit Libya without warning and leave worried families behind them.

Egypt: Army Offensive Kills 16 Militants In Sinai
[Ynet] Egyptian military officials say troops have killed 16 members of an al-Qaeda-inspired bad boy group in the restive Sinai Peninsula.

The officials say four leading members of Ansar Beit al-Maqdis were tossed in the clink

during the operations, which were still underway early Tuesday.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has claimed most of the major bad boy attacks in Egypt since the 2013 ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. It has also recently beheaded several people it accused of spying for Israel.

After Fierce Gun Battle: 400 Boko Haram insurgents killed in battle to retake Bazza, Michika, Madagali
[Osun Defender] Heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy...
between Nigerian troops and Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
gunnies ensued yesterday in Adamawa State as soldiers backed from the air by Nigerian Airforce attack helicopters launched an attack to retake territories in the possession of Boko Haram.

China-Japan-Koreas
North, South Koreas Exchange Fire at Sea
North and South Korean naval vessels exchanged fire on Tuesday after a North Korean patrol boat crossed the maritime border. According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a North Korean patrol boat strayed around 900 m south of the Northern Limit Line at around 9:50 a.m. A 570-ton Navy battleship
I don't think that word means what you think it means, at least in English...
issued a warning, which the North Korean patrol boat ignored, prompting the South to fire a warning shot. The North Korean vessel did not turn back but fired back instead.

A JCS official said, "The North Korean patrol boat fired dozens of rounds from what appears to have been heavy machine guns and our ship returned by firing around 10 rounds of 76-mm shells and around 80 rounds from 40-mm guns."

The exchange of fire lasted about 10 minutes before the North Korean patrol boat headed back. Neither side suffered any damage.
Good grief. Sink the damned thing next time. Can't anybody hit anything around here?

Japan Student Suspected Of Trying To Join Islamic State
[Ynet] Tokyo police are investigating the possibility that a Japanese student tried to travel to Syria to join Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. Suga did not elaborate, but the Asahi Shimbun daily said police questioned a 26-year-old man, taking leave of absence from Hokkaido University in north Japan, about plans to go to Syria to join Islamic State as a fighter.

"I am aware police conducted a search based on the criminal law. But I would like to refrain from going into details because the matter is under investigation," Suga told a news conference.

50 Police Officers Called To Muslim-Yazidi Brawl In Germany
[BREITBART] Fifty coppers had to be deployed to break up an enormous brawl between Kurds and Moslems in North-West Germany last night, as angry migrants erupted into the streets to vent frustrations as the violence being visited upon the Yazidi Kurds in Northern Iraq by radical ISIS forces spills over onto European soil.

The confrontation, which involved sixty Yazidis and thirty Moslem counter-protestors was described as a 'running battle' when the officers moved to separate the two groups at around 1730 last night. According to theLocal.de those involved used street furniture as well as their fists, and six were maimed. So far no arrests have been made, but police have indicated they expect more violence.

The fight followed a Europe-wide day of protest by Kurdish groups, who are trying to bring attention to the plight of the Kurdish people, which has involved occupations of radio stations and street protests. The ethnic Kurds in Northern Iraq now appear to be trapped between rapidly advancing ISIS forces from the South, and the Turks to the North who are fundamentally opposed to an independent Kurdish state.

Kurds have suffered terrible treatment at the hands of ISIS as they capture settlements. A report in the Guardian quotes one local who came back to him home to find his sister and eight year-old niece left behind by ISIS: "They had been raped, and their hearts were cut out of their chests and left on top of the bodies... I buried them with my own hands".

Protests by Yazidi groups have continued sporadically over the past couple of months in countries across Europe. Yesterday was the second time violence has flared in North-West Germany, as 300 Yazidis clashed with a group of ISIS supporters on the streets of Herford in August. People fought with knives, broken bottles, workshop tools and Police confiscated one gun.

Oxford Street station in London was occupied yesterday, which severely delayed services in central London for hours. Reports have also emerged today that a group of Kurds protesting outside the European Parliament have now stormed the building, and hundreds are now occupying EU buildings.

Home Front: WoT
ISIS Fighters Caught Crossing Border into Texas
WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., says that at least ten fighters for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria have been apprehended while attempting to enter the southern U.S. border.

The California Republican claims that “at least ten ISIS fighters have been caught coming across the Mexican border in Texas,” in a conversation with Fox News on Tuesday. Hunter says that the Islamic terrorists are slipping into the U.S. through the porous southern border as several have already been captured.

“There’s nobody talking about it,” Rep. Hunter told Fox. “If you really want to protect Americans from ISIS, you secure the southern border. It’s that simple…They caught them at the border, therefore we know that ISIS is coming across the border. If they catch five or ten of them then you know there’s going to be dozens more that did not get caught by the border patrol.”

In August, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, warned that the open border posed an “immediate threat” for terrorist activity infiltrating the country. The government watchdog group, Judicial Watch, said ISIS terrorists were “planning to attack the United States with car bombs or other vehicle born [sic] improvised explosive devices.”

Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said that 1,933-mile southern border with Mexico is the obvious entry point for Islamic State terrorists. He says that information regarding the capture of Islamic State terrorists crossing the border comes directly from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“ISIS doesn’t have a navy, they don’t have an air force, they don’t have nuclear weapons. The only way that ISIS is going to harm Americans is by coming through the southern border – which they already have,” he added.

“They aren’t flying B-1 bombers, bombing American cities,” said Hunter. “But they are going to be bombing American cities coming across from Mexico…All you have to do is ask the border patrol.”

Second drone attack of the day kills three suspected militants in NWA
[DAWN] A fresh drone strike left three suspected gunnies dead and five others injured in North Wazoo Agency on Tuesday, intelligence sources said.

This is the second attack of the day and fourth such strike in last three days. At least seven suspected gunnies were killed and five others injured in a similar strike earlier in the day.

Highly credible sources told Dawn.com that a US drone fired two missiles at a compound in Madakhel Kunar Sar area of North Waziristan's Datakhel tehsil, killing three suspected krazed killers. Five suspected gunnies were maimed in the attack as well.

The sources said that the suspected gunnies were standing on a mountain near the targeted compound at the time of drone attack.

Identity of the gunnies could not be ascertained as yet.

At least seven suspected gunnies were killed and five others injured Tuesday in a US drone strike on a compound and a vehicle in the Shawal tehsil of North Waziristan tribal region.

Official sources said the US drone fired two missiles at the house and the car in Shawal tehsil's Kund Ghar area, killing at least seven suspected gunnies and injuring five others.

Sources added that the compound of krazed killer commander Mustaqeem was targeted in the strike, adding that the identity of the dear departed gunnies is yet to ascertained.

JUI-F, ASWJ workers shot dead in Karachi
[DAWN] At least two people were killed in the span of half an hour on Tuesday in what appeared to be separate assassination incidents in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
According to police, unidentified gunnies in North Nazimabad's Hyderi area rubbed out Maulana Masood, an activist of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat
...which is the false nose and plastic mustache of the murderous banned extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain, whatcha might call the political wing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
(ASWJ).

The body of the dear departed was taken to the Ziauddin hospital, where people blocked traffic on the road in protest.

About half an hour earlier, a man identified as Maulana Sajidullah was rubbed out in Peerabad Moslem Colony.

Sajidullah was said to belong to the Jamaat Ulema Islam - Fazl (Fazl).

The incidents come a week after hundreds of ASWJ activists paralysed the traffic system in parts of Karachi as they staged a protest demonstration against 'extrajudicial killings' and the 'illegal arrest' of their party workers.

Further details of Tuesday's incidents were unavailable at the moment, but the city has witnessed a wave of tit-for-tat sectarian killings in the recent past.

According to a report by the Pakistain Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS), 212 people were killed last year in 132 sectarian-related attacks in Pakistain, mostly in Karachi.

Security source stated that "The ISIL gunnies conducted wide terrorist attack on one of the checkpoints to storm into Samara city where they detonated a Hammar boom-mobile with a jacket wallah to kill and injure 17 persons from the volunteers."

"The Iraqi Ari Force bombarded the ISIL gunnies and burned four of their vehicles to foil their attempt," the source concluded.

Suicide car bomb attack kills 17 in Iraq: police, doctor
[DAWN] A jacket wallah rammed an explosives-laden armoured vehicle into houses used by Shia gunnies north of the Iraqi city of Samarra, killing at least 17 people, police and medical sources said Tuesday.

The attack took place in Abbasiya, around 15 kilometres (nine miles) north of Samarra, on Monday evening and completely destroyed two houses, the sources said.

Thirteen people were also maimed.

"The destruction was huge. Those homes were by the (Tigris) river and had been requisitioned by the gunnies to use as an observation post," the police officer said.

He said the gunnies were monitoring the river to prevent Islamic State

Anti-ISIS operations cost US $1.1 billion
The Pentagon has spent as much as $1.1 billion on US military operations against ISIS militants in Iraq and Syria since the mission began in mid-June, including more than $62 million alone in Navy airstrikes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.

US Central Command, in data released on Monday, said that the Navy has dropped roughly 185 munitions, including 47 cruise missiles launched from ships in the region.

Central Command said Air Force fighter jets have far exceeded those numbers, launching close to 1,000 munitions. The data released on Monday broke out the $62 million spent on Navy munitions, but provided no cost estimates for Air Force munitions. The bulk of the Navy costs were for the 47 Tomahawk cruise missiles fired by American warships in the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea that targeted the Khorasan Group, an Al Qaeda cell, in eight locations west of the city of Aleppo in Syria. The group was said to be plotting imminent attacks on American and Western interests, and it was one of the key targets two weeks ago when the United States first begaan airstrikes into Syria.

The Pentagon has struggled to come up with specific cost figures for the Iraq and Syria operations. Officials say it has cost an average of $7 million to $10 million daily since June.

The costs of the operations began at a much lower rate in June then escalated as airstrikes began in northern Iraq on August 8. In late August, the Pentagon said the cost was an average of $7.5 million daily. The airstrikes were expanded to Syria in September, prompting the latest, higher average estimates.

There are currently more than 1,300 US troops in Iraq, including security personnel, staff at two joint operations centers in Baghdad and Irbil, and advisory teams that are working with Iraqi brigades and headquarters units.

A coalition of about 40 nations is participating in the US-led operations, including several Arab nations that are conducting airstrikes in Syria. Several European nations are participating in the airstrikes in Iraq, but not in Syria.
Once again it's all up to Uncle Sugar...

Israel Fires Into Lebanon After Hezbollah Attack
[ABCNEWS.GO] Israel fired toward Hezbollah positions in southern Leb on Tuesday after the Shiite guerrillas set off an kaboom along the tense border that maimed two Israeli soldiers, in the most serious incident between the two countries in months.

The Israeli military said soldiers were on a patrol when an bomb went off. Israeli troops then found a second bomb on the Israeli side of the border, which exploded by Israeli bomb squads. Israeli forces then responded by firing artillery toward two Hezbollah positions in Leb.

On its Al Manar TV station, Hezbollah issued a statement claiming responsibility for the blast, saying it targeted an Israeli patrol. The admission marked a rare instance of an open clash between the two bitter enemies and a stark flare-up after years of relative calm.

Israel and Leb have been in a state of war for six decades, but the border area has remained largely quiet since a month-long war in the summer of 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah. There have been sporadic outbursts of violence since then.

Israel suspects that Hezbollah may be looking to flex its muscles along the border to deflect attention away from its struggles in fighting against Islamic rebels in Syria. Israeli officials said Tuesday's attack marked an escalation, but they did not expect it to devolve into an all-out conflict.

"The Lebanese government and Hezbollah are directly liable for this blatant breach of Israel's illusory sovereignty," said Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a front man for the Israeli Defense Forces. "The IDF responded to the unprovoked aggression against its forces and will continue to operate in order to maintain the safety of the northern border of Israel."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel has "proven that we will respond strongly against any attempts to harm us."

The incident comes two days after Israeli soldiers opened fire after what they said was a border breach in the Shebaa farms area. Leb's military countered that one of its army outposts came under Israeli fire, and one soldier was lightly maimed.

Fearful of provoking Israel, Hezbollah has rarely taken responsibility for attacks since the 2006 war.

Two Blasts Hit IDF Outpost On Israel-Lebanon Border; 2 Soldiers Wounded
[Ynet] Two soldiers lightly maimed after blast goes off near Israel's border with Leb; Hezbollah claims responsibility for attack; IDF returns fire at Hezbollah targets in southern Leb; Netanyahu: 'We've proven that we react with force to any attempt to harm us, whether it's in the south or another front.'

Two IDF soldiers were lightly maimed when a blast went off near an IDF outpost on Mount Dov in the Golan Heights. A second kaboom occurred half an hour later at the same outpost, but no one was maimed.

Hezbollah grabbed credit for the bombings. The IDF has returned fire, firing 40 artillery shells and hitting two Hezbollah targets in southern Leb.

The maimed soldiers, bomb-disposal experts from the Engineering Corps, were evacuated by helicopter to the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa after receiving initial medical care at the scene. They were both suffering shrapnel wounds to their limbs, and were in light condition. One of them is expected to undergo surgery to remove the shrapnel.

The soldiers were maimed while working to locate, identify and neutralize bombs in the area, following the exchange fire incident in the area on Sunday.

An initial army investigation into the attacks found the explosives were planted in advance and were waiting for the troops. Following the attacks, IDF troops were searching the area for additional explosives.

There are conflicting reports about the incident, but an initial assessment indicates that a blast hit a group of soldiers traveling near the border area on Mount Dov; it is possible they were traveling in an armored vehicle. An IDF source also said that there was a possibility additional blasts were in the area.

"Hezbollah is responsible to the planting of these bombs and setting them off today, which is why it was attacked back," Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said.

"There's a phenomenon here of a state within a state, and we also consider the Lebanese government responsible for this incident," he added.

UN front man Stephane Dujarric said the incident violated a UN Security Council resolution that was adopted to end the 2006 Second Leb War. He said the UN force in Leb, which has been in place for decades, has launched an investigation and contacted both sides to urge restraint.

"Such actions are in contravention of efforts to reduce tensions and establish a stable and secure environment in southern Leb," Dujarric said.

According to Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV station, the attack was in response to the death of Hezbollah bully boy Hassan Ali Haidar last month in a reported kaboom in Aadloun in Leb that the organization links to an Israeli intelligence device or UAV attack.

Following the kaboom in Aadloun in September, the Lebanese Army released a statement saying that, "At 3:45pm a Lebanese Army intelligence patrol found an unidentified object near the village of Aadloun. When the patrol tried to reveal the nature of the object, Israel remotely detonated it, causing the death of a citizen who was nearby. The blast area was closed off for security and an investigation has been launched into the event."

According to reports in Lebanese media, Haider, 25, was a bomb expert who was killed while he and his colleagues were trying to disarm four explosives.

This was not the first time Hezbollah has taken responsibility for attacks in Mount Dov. Defense establishment officials believe that much like the previous incident in the area last year, Hezbollah took advantage of the tricky terrain and the fact there is no border fence at the mountain's extensions to plant the explosives and detonate them from afar.

Situation assessments held in the Northern Command in recent weeks led to the decision to increase army presence in the area because of the holidays and instability on the Syrian border.

Al Jazeera reported that there were fears of a terror attack against Israel, possibly by Hezbollah. While Leb's Al-Manar television, which is aligned with Hezbollah, said kabooms had been heard in the area. Officials in Beirut had no immediate comment.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed his gratitude to the soldiers "who thwarted a terrorist attack in the north" and sent his well wishes to the maimed.

"We've proven that we react with force to any attempt to harm us, whether it's in the south or another front," he said.

"We're witnessing the threats accumulating around us, these threats the whole world already knows about and is already dealing with some of them," Netanyahu went on to say, adding that these threats obligated Israel "to invest considerable amounts in security, and invest in communities near the border alongside that."

Mount Dov - or the Shebaa Farms - is a small strip of disputed land at the cross section between the borders of Lebanese-Syrian border and the Golan Heights, and has been scene to numerous incidents involving Hezbollah and Paleostinian groups active in the region.

Israel and Leb are technically at war but their 80 km (49 mile) border has been largely quiet since a month-long war between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in 2006.

Just Sunday the IDF said that troops shot up a number of suspects who crossed into Israeli-controlled territory from neighboring Leb, while reports in Leb said the group was Lebanese soldiers. One Lebanese soldier was maimed during the altercation with the IDF.

There were conflicting reports about the shooting in the Shebaa Farms area, a disputed zone along the frontier between Leb and Israel. The UN peacekeeping force in Leb, UNIFIL, said it was aware of the reports and was investigating.

Piracy feared as Vietnamese oil tanker vanishes off Singapore
Vietnamese authorities are searching for an oil tanker feared to have been taken by pirates just 40 minutes after it departed Singapore for Vietnam almost one week ago.

The Sunrise 689 was carrying 18 crew and 5,200 tonnes of oil when it left Singapore's Horizon port on October 2, according to the Vietnamese News Service (VNS). The ship's owner, the Hai Phong Seafood Shipbuilding Join Stock Company, reported that it lost contact with the ship within an hour of its departure, VNS said. No trace of the vessel has since been found.

VNS reported that Vietnam's Foreign Ministry had sent "diplomatic notes" to the embassies of Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia in Hanoi, asking for assistance in finding the missing ship.
Probably somewhere in the Southern Riau Islands.

Philippines deploys K9 unit to seek Abu Sayyaf hostages
Philippine military forces have dispatched ten tracking teams, led by specially trained dogs, to locate the Abu Sayyaf who are holding up to seven foreigners for ransom in the jungles of Sulu.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said, "Our experienced K9 tracking teams will be able to easily locate the bandits wherever they go. We want to pressure them to eventually release the hostages. The military will not negotiate with terrorists and we will continuously pursue them deep inside their hiding places. The presence of the K9 teams would make our job easier."

The K9 company was deployed after five battalions, including the entire 501st Infantry Brigade from Northern Luzon, or roughly 2,500 men, were deployed in the Zamboanga Peninsula against the Abu Sayyaf.

The Abu Sayyaf are believed to be holding a total of seven foreigners. On Tuesday, two Germans captives were allowed to speak with journalists on live radio and they appealed to the Philippine and German governments to work harder for their release.

Last week, the Abu Sayyaf threatened to behead one of the Germans on October 17 if their demands for ransom were not met as well as the withdrawal of US troops in Syria and Iraq.

makes progress near Kobani as two air strikes hit the area and sporadic gunfire was reported.

Warplanes believed to have been sent by the US. led coalition struck positions held by Islamic State Death Eaters near a Syrian border that beleaguered Kurdish forces have been struggling to defend.

The Arclight airstrikes on Tuesday came after fighters from the hard boy group managed to enter some neighborhoods of Kobani, a strategic town near the Turkish border. Journalists on the Turkish side of the border heard the sound of warplanes before two large plumes of smoke billowed just west of Kobani.

The US-led coalition has launched several Arclight airstrikes over the past two weeks near Kobani in a bid to help Kurdish forces defend the town, but the strikes appear to have done little to slow the Islamic State offensive.

Islamic State fighters advanced into the south west of Kobani overnight, a monitoring group said on Tuesday, taking several buildings to gain attacking positions from two sides of the city.

From across the nearby Turkish border two Islamic State flags could be seen flying over the eastern side of Kobani. Two air strikes hit the area and sporadic gunfire could be heard.

Islamic State fighters were using heavy weapons and shells to hit Kobani, senior Kurdish official Asya Abdullah told Rooters from inside the town, which has been under siege for three weeks.

"Yesterday there was a violent clash. We have fought hard to keep them out of the town," she said by telephone.

"The festivities are not in the whole of Kobani, but in specific areas, on the outskirts and towards the centre."

The al-Qaeda offshoot has ramped up its offensive in recent days against the mainly Kurdish border town, despite being targeted by US-led coalition led air strikes aimed at halting its progress.

The group wants to take Kobani to consolidate a dramatic sweep across northern Iraq and Syria, in the name of an absolutist version of Sunni Islam, that has sent shockwaves through the Middle East.

"There were festivities overnight. Not heavy but ISIS is going forward from the southwest. They have crossed into Kobani and control some buildings in the city there," said Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a group that monitors the conflict with a network on the ground. ISIS is a former name for Islamic State.

"They are about 50 metres inside the southwest of the city," Abdulrahman said.

An estimated 180,000 people have fled into Turkey from the Kobani region following the Islamic State advance. More than 2,000 Syrian Kurds including women and kiddies were evacuated from the town after the latest fighting, a member of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) said on Monday.

Before the offensive, Kobani, known as Ayn al-Arab in Arabic, was home to refugees from the civil war which pits rebels against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

Then the Polish Home Army revolts against their Nazi oppressors. Joe and the Red Army just sit there watching the Nazis reduce Warsaw (again) and march off the defeated Poles. Parish Priest, 20 Christians Kidnapped In Syria
[Ynet] Catholic news agency reports 20 Christians taken along with priest, says 'Among the kidnapped are young people, both boys and girls.'

A parish priest and a number of Christians have been kidnapped from a Syrian village near the border with Turkey, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said on Tuesday.

The Latin Patriarchate, which oversees Latin Church Catholics in Israel and neighboring countries, said Father Hanna Jallouf had been kidnapped on the night of Oct. 5 in Knayeh, a small Christian village. It said his kidnappers were brigades linked to the Islamist Nusra Front.

The statement said there had been no contact with the priest, whose church is part of the Catholic church, or his captors and added that a number of Franciscan nuns in the village had taken refuge with local people.

Catholic news agency Fides, quoting Bishop Georges Abou Khazen, the Apostolic Vicar of Aleppo in Syria, said around 20 Christians were taken along with the priest. "Among the kidnapped are young people, both boys and girls," he was quoted as saying.

The Latin Patriarchate said members of the Franciscan order had been present in the village for more than a century.

Islamist fighters have targeted Christians, members of the Yazidi sect and Shi'ite Moslems in a campaign in Syria and neighboring Iraq that has killed thousands and forced almost 2 million Iraqis to flee their homes.

FSA Seize Russian Spy Station Near Israeli Border
Syrian rebels have overtaken a joint Russian-Syrian secret facility that they claim was a covert intelligence collection base. Opposition fighters say the post was used to snoop in on the communications of opposition groups -- and perhaps even the nearby Israelis.

Free Syrian Army officials, U.S. officials, and independent experts told The Daily Beast that the evidence of Russian involvement in the facility, just a few miles from Syria’s border with Israel, if verified, would show a level of Russian involvement in the Syrian civil war that was not previously known. Free Syrian Army officials posted several videos on YouTube showing both the outside and the inside of the facility, which the FSA captured over the weekend during a battle near Al Harah, south of Damascus, next to the Golan Heights.

The videos and accompanying photos show insignias representing a branch of Syrian intelligence and the Russian Osnaz GRU radio electronic intelligence agency. The FSA found photos and lists of senior Russian intelligence and military officials who visited the facility, pictures of Russian personnel running the base, and maps showing the location of Israeli military units. Israeli news reports earlier this year said the Russian government had upgraded an advanced surveillance and intelligence gathering station in that area which could snoop on Israel, large parts of Jordan, and western Iraq, potentially to warn Iran in advance of an Israeli strike. Initial reports said documents from the facility suggested the Russian equipment was used to spy on Israel, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

U.S. defense officials told The Daily Beast the photos of the Russian
insignia first shared on blogs were legitimate. But that evidence, at the same time, may not necessarily mean the facility captured by the opposition was controlled by Russia’s military; it could just mean that Russians were working there, as advisors or partners to Syrian troops.

Firas Al Hawrani, the official spokesman for the FSA in southern Syria, told The Daily Beast Monday that FSA forces had seen about 15 Russian personnel operating in the Al Harah area before the FSA took the facility, but they left before the area fell out of regime control. The facility taken over by the Syrian opposition suggests the Russians gave the regime “a whole new capability,” Mark Galeotti, an expert on Russia’s military and intelligence services at New York University said. “A lot of the Syrians are very clumsy. Some of the more precise attacks in the last year have suggested a new sophistication.”

#3  Not certain about the alcohol aspect, but if I were a betting man I say a little Predator 'proof of concept' in Syria might make a Russian light or two come on in the Ukraine. I have no evidence that this was the regime's intent however. Too complex a strategic message no doubt.
